CMBA 2020 Board of Directors Greetings again fellow CMBA members, With the holiday season in full effect, now is the perfect time to stop and give thanks. It has been an exceptional busy year in our industry and in our lives. I want to take the opportunity to give thanks for all that we have been blessed this year. During the holiday season it can be challenging to resist getting swept away by the “busy-ness” of our lives which can consume our attention away from what truly matters most. This year has CMBA President Tony Steinemann, ADS Designs LLC taught us to slow down and to truly appreciate what does matter most such as our families, friends, good health, and happiness. I ask you to also keep those who have struggled or suffered loss of loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. The holidays can be a difficult and sad time of year for some that could no doubt use some extra support. I would like to take a moment and recognize a truly special person in our association. Bonnie Moeller has not only been our ED for the past 38yrs, she has been the face of our association not only locally but statewide. Bonnie’s dedication and love for our association over the years will be difficult to replace. She has always welcomed you with open arms. I want to personally Thank You for the opportunity to be able to serve as your last president of your lustrous career. I wish you nothing but the best in your retirement years, it is truly deserving. Bonnie will be slowing stepping away over the next couple weeks, so please call or stop by and thank her for all she has done.

I would like to share my deepest appreciation for the fantastic work of our CMBA staff this year. This year has had so many challenges, along with planning, replan and then replan again events. Through it all they have done a wonderful job keeping everyone in the loop. This definitely has been a challenging year for them. Their commitment to our association is unmatched and I am extremely grateful for it. I also want to thank all the great members, associates and builders that volunteer their time to serve on committees and truly make a difference in our association. You make the CMBA one exceptional association that you all should be proud to belong to. Speaking of committed members, I would like to congratulate David Werschay, Robin Gohman, and Jeremy Salzbrun on being elected for another 3 year term and also welcome April Jacque of W. Gohman to the CMBA Board. All your continued dedication to the building industry is commendable.

38 Years With Bonnie What were some highlights over the last 38 years with CMBA?

When membership was over 600 - and we were the second largest association in the state next to the Builders Association of Twin Cities.

The “Parade of Homes” had over 90 homes.

Having 4 full time and 1 part time staff.

Attending the International Builders Shows in January, the NAHB Spring Board meetings in Washington DC., the annual NAHB Executive Officer Council meetings around the country, and the NAHB Fall Board meetings.

Knowing and working with the association’s founding father Art Geissinger, from NSP.

Working with over 36 presidents - all unique - and each my favorite in their own way.

Builders’ Expo with 200 builders in attendance along with a product show of member vendors.

Knowing and working with the Ladies Auxiliary.

Seeing CMBA grow and having three logo changes.

Seeing the Remodelers Council and the Commercial Builders Council form.

Moving the HomeShow from the Crossroads Shopping Mall to the Rivers Edge Convention Center. Filling the rooms and hallways at the civic center and having a waiting list of vendors. Celebrities as star attractions.

Christmas parties with over 550 in attendance. Entertainment like Tonic Sol-fa and Bobby Vee.

10

What will you miss the most? Lord knows I will NOT miss set up for the HomeShow and working it the entire time! But I WILL miss the members who I have made friends with over the years, and the staff who are like family to me. What were your favorite events? The Sporting Clay Shoot! It is only a mile from my home

What will you do when you retire? Catching the big ones with my fishing guide, gardening, and outside stuff.

How have things changed from when you started? Technology. I did not have a computer when I started, only a manual typewriter. Thank goodness for whiteout! Meeting notices were typed up on a post card, ran through a copy machine and mailed. Then came computers that were affordable, and fax machines. I would have to run to the camera shop the AM after a membership meeting to get the pictures developed for the On the Level magazine so it could be mailed in time before the next membership meeting. Now pictures are all digital. I have seen good times for the industry and really bad times, but nothing like we are experiencing now. It is a good year to exit and allow new staff with new fresh ideas. You are in good hands with Wanda.

In parting, I would like to say that I am ending my time here the same as I started - with much gratitude and respect for this association and its members. So, with that, I want to say thank you CMBA members! You have been wonderful to work for, and I will cherish the memories for years to come. - Bonnie Moeller

As the end of the year approaches, so does Bonnie’s retirement and I know I speak for all of us here at the CMBA when I say “We are going to miss you so much little lady!”. Bonnie has dedicated 38 years to helping grow this organization and we wish her the very best in her new chapter. Bonnie, we hope you get to spend lots of time with family, friends and enjoying the great MN outdoors. You have taught me so much more than just ‘process and procedures’.. You demonstrate a great commitment and sincere compassion in everything you do. I am blessed and humbled for the opportunity here at the CMBA. Steve Gottwalt, Government Affairs Consultant

CMBA Government Affairs Committee - Post-Election Wrap-Up: The GA Committee held its monthly meeting in November shortly after the elections. We welcomed and congratulated U.S. Representative-elect Michelle Fischbach, who won Minnesota's 7th District Congressional seat, defeating long-time incumbant Congressman Collin Peterson. We also welcomed 6th District Congressman Tom Emmer's staff for a post-election update. Julia Bogue with NAHB gave us a sense of the federal landscape. BAM Executive VP, Grace Keliher, and BAM Lobbyist, Brian Halloran, provided a run-down of the Minnesota state elections. Minnesota remains the only state in the nation with divided government as the GOP held onto its majority in the Senate, and the DFL held onto its majority in the House. Participants discussed lumber shortages, delays and costs which are beginning to ease, and the high cost of local development fees from some area communities. We had at least three state legislators join our Zoom Meeting, and at least one local community development official (Scott Zaehr, City of Sartell). The next meeting of the CMBA Government Affairs Committee is December 15th 8-9 AM. To join the Government Affairs Committee, contact: Steve Gottwalt, steve@cmbaonline.org, M: 952-923-5265. One Win, One Loss, One To Go: CMBA has worked with BAM and others to advocate for our industry as Minnesota considers changes to its Energy, Electrical and Plumbing codes. Win: We opposed consideration of changes to the state's Energy Code, and the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) ruled in our favor, recommending to the Commissioner of the Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) that it is "inappropriate" to consider changes at this time. Loss: CMBA also opposed changes to Minnesota's Residential Electrical Code, but the ALJ in that matter ruled the state should go ahead with 2020 National Electrical Code changes. DOLI quickly adopted the changes and made them effective November 17th despite efforts from BAM and others to postpone and reconsider. To Go: DOLI is beginning the process of considering changes to the state's Residential Plumbing Code. CMBA will continue working with BAM and others to advocate for you and our industry in these matters. Local Communities Finalizing 2021 Budgets, Levies and Fees: CMBA regularly tracks the activities of our local communities and counties. Area communities report they are considering property tax levy increases for 2021, but are not planning increases in development or building-related taxes/fees, including SAC and WAC. St. Cloud continues into the third year of a previously approved five-year set of SAC and WAC increases. Most area communities have indicated they do not want to hamper development as we work to recover from the economic downturn of the COVID-19 shutdowns. CMBA continues monitoring local community activities as they finalize budgets, levies and fee schedules for 2021. Steve Gottwalt CMBA Government Affairs Consultant M: 952.923.5265

CMBA and the Builders Association of Minnesota recognizes some of our local legislators for their commitment and support to Central Minnesota’s local residential homes industry.

IRS: Businesses with PPP Loans Can't Deduct Expenses | NAHB Now | The News Blog of the National Association of Home Builders Businesses that get their Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans forgiven will not qualify for some valuable deductions, according to IRS guidance that reiterates its position taken in April. In addition, companies that have “a reasonable expectation that the government won’t require them to pay back the money can’t deduct the business expenses paid for by the loan.” nahbnow.com
