Lumber One started as a small lumber yard in Avon, MN and has grown to one of the premier custom home builders in Minnesota. From it’s modest beginning, Lumber One prospered under the leadership of Terry Schmid. After purchasing Avon Lumber Yard in 1962, he expanded the company purchasing the Cold Spring Lumber Yard in 1967. In 1987, both companies changed their names to Lumber One.

Jack graduated with a degree in finance from Saint John’s University in May 2013. Since Jack’s time at Lumber One Avon, he has headed up operations of single-family homes, worked on sales of new homes and remodels, and has helped managed all facilities. Jack’s goal is to help peoples’ dreams become a reality when building! When Jack is not in the office, he can be found hanging out with his wife (Ali) and 1 year old daughter (Emery), relaxing in the family cabin, hitting too many golf balls on the golf course, or hunting grouse and pheasants.

CMBA 2020 Board of Directors Greetings again fellow CMBA members,

CMBA President Tony Steinemann, ADS Designs LLC

Well, 2020 has been a year to remember (or maybe want to forget for many of us). Now with the general election just around the corner our country faces one of the biggest decision for many of us in our lives which may alter our lifestyle as we know it. I want to encourage everyone to get out and vote. I ask you to be diligent and do your research on the candidates so that you can vote with confidence to ensure a better future for our families. I also ask that you seriously consider voting for candidates that support our industry. So please get out and vote and have your voices heard.

Speaking of election, November is also when we elect our next directors to serve on the CMBA board. There are two builders and associate position openings. The length of the term is three years. Thank you to these nominees who have agreed to run for the board.

November is Spike appreciation month and I want to take a moment to send out a HUGE thank you to all of our Spike members. They do so much for our association and their dedication is truly amazing. Our Spike members are a vital component to maintaining our memberships numbers for our organization. I invite all Spike members to our November meeting to be recognized for all you do. At our November membership meeting we will also be recognizing our local schools that have received funds from our Tools for Schools program. This program has again allowed the CMBA to donate over $25k to local schools and their shop programs. Thank you to Thomas Tool & Supply, Inc. for sponsoring this event. The CMBA continues to raise money to be able to support these programs. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to support these efforts. Please follow this link to make a donation http:// cmbaonline.org/careers-education/tools-schools/ Lastly and sadly, with everything going on this year our membership numbers have declined from the start of the year. I believe that the members that have cancelled do not fully understand the benefits our association provides for their businesses. I ask that everyone make an effort to not only recruit new members but reach out and do business with current members. Call your business associates and encourage them to join a well-respected organization that advocates for the important issues in our industry. Tell them to support the industry that supports them. Until next time,

EXECUTIVE OFFICE: Training, Training, Training… we have been working hard to ensure a smooth transition of Executive Directors as Bonnie Moeller prepares for her retirement after 38 years. There is a lot to learn and we are having fun celebrating all the memories at the same time. In October, Bonnie Moeller and Wanda Schroeder attended a retreat held by BAM (Builders Association of Minnesota) with other MN Executive Officers to share some best practices and hear how others, across the state, are working together in their communities amidst the COVID restrictions. Next year is the CMBA’s 50th year in business, oh how times have changed! We would love to receive information and pictures from you, that we can share through our media outlets, on how your business has changed over the last 50 years. An example might include how fireplaces looked 50 years ago to what they look like today – who would have ever imagined we would put odd shaped marbles in fireplaces and not just use them on the floor with yarn?! We know this year has brought some unforeseen ‘opportunities’, to put a positive spin on it, and we understand the importance of getting you the information you need to be successful through a variety of communication channels. We’d love your feedback for our 2021 membership meetings and to understand your comfort level in attending these events ‘live’. Please send your feedback to wanda@cmbaonline.org.

Thank you for your commitment and flexibility as we navigated our way through 2020. BOWLING WITH BUILDERS: We had 25 members and an additional 25 local representatives join us for Meet the Candidate night October 15th at Great River Bowl in Sartell. It was a great night to ‘strike’ up conversations with builders, associates and representatives from state and local levels as we all work together to continue to grow our communities. A special thanks to Jeremy Salzbrun (H&S Heating & A/C Residential & Service LLC) for sponsoring this event and congratulations on being the Top Pin Award winner – Look out Nate Moeller you have some competition. SPIKE APPRECIATION: We will be celebrating our Spike members at the November 11th Membership meeting at the Eagles in St. Cloud. Thank you for your commitment and assistance in growing the strength of the CMBA! To find out more information about becoming a Spike visit: http://cmbaonline.org/about-cmba/spike-club/ TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS: Our Tools for Schools committee is working hard on fundraising for our local area schools. In October we distributed nearly $25,000 to 18 Central MN schools in an effort to build our future trade workers. We will be highlighting how these funds are used by the schools in our November Membership meeting. Please join us in contributing to this great cause by visiting: https://www.givemn.org/story/CmbaFund

Elections Have Consequences! – “This is the most consequential election in our lifetimes!” How often have you heard that? And yet, this year, it really feels that way. The stakes are incredibly high as the U.S. economy struggles to come back from a massive punch-in-the-gut from COVID-19 and related shutdowns. Nationally, the contrasts could not be more sharp. Republicans, including President Donald Steve Gottwalt, CMBA; Rep. Shane Trump, favor policies that would ease tax and regulatory burdens on the nation’s employers and Mekeland, Minnesota House District 15B; producers. Democrats, including former VP Joe Biden, favor repealing tax cuts and raising taxes Bonnie Moeller, CMBA; Wanda particularly on businesses (the term they use is “fair share”). Locally, keeping a razor-thin conservative Schroeder, CMBA. majority in the State Senate hangs by a thread. And we face a number of city and county elections that will shape local zoning, development, building and taxation policies. This is a very important time to act in your business’s and our industry’s best interests by casting your votes and encouraging your employees, associates, colleagues and vendors to do the same. Early voting has been under way for a month, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd. Elections have consequences, so make your vote count! Great Turnout for CMBA Meet The Candidates and Bowling With Builders - More than 20 candidates for local, county and state elected offices joined CMBA members Thursday, October 15th at the Great River Bowl in Sartell for a rare and informal opportunity to discuss issues important to our members and the candidates. CMBA holds this event each election cycle, giving members an exclusive opportunity to know their candidates and where they stand on development and buildingrelated issues. We Finally Have A Bonding Bill! – After months of political wrangling, the Legislature and Governor Walz agreed on passage of a $1.9 billion State Bonding Bill funding a variety of capital infrastructure improvements around the state. The bill passed during the Minnesota Legislature’s 5th special Bonnie Moeller, CMBA; Dale Gruber, Dale session of 2020. It includes $16 million for public housing rehabilitation, and $100 million in housing I Gruber Construction; Rep. Jerry Relph, infrastructure bonds, nearly $50 million in MNSCU Higher Education Asset Preservation and Minnesota Senate District 14,Bill Landwehr, Replacement (HEAPER) funds, money for Sartell parks Goodin Co.; Wanda Schroeder, CMBA improvements and $10 million for St. Cloud’s Metro Athletic Complex (MAC). CMBA worked with BAM and others advocating for passage of a State Bonding package. Judge Rules In Favor of Adopting National Electrical Code (NEC) - CMBA worked with BAM and others objecting to adoption of the NEC without Minnesota-specific amendments. The adoption was supported by a broad coalition of electrical component manufacturers and fire safety professionals. Builders objected because of technical and cost issues with several new requirements, and procedural concerns with the adoption process. The Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) ruled in favor of the state’s Electrical Board and rejected arguments against adopting the NEC. Following the judge’s decision, the state’s Board of Electricity took action moving forward with adoption of the 2020 NEC as originally planned. An effective date has not been announced.

CMBA Government Affairs Meeting – The CMBA Government Affairs Committee met Tuesday, October 27th, to go over national, state and local governmental issues important to local developers and builders. BAM staff provided a state-level update, and CMBA Government Affairs Consultant, Steve Gottwalt, gave an overview of local communities’ plans for taxes and fees going into 2021. Join the CMBA Government Affairs Committee! We make government affairs impactful, informative, engaging and (yes) fun! Open to any CMBA member.
