Pinnacles of “ Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains...” —Psalms 36:5-6, NIV 1984

Annual Conference 2017 2017 WPC Annual Conference — 1

Welcome WELCOME TO BIG SKY, MONTANA AND THE 2017 WPC ANNUAL CONFERENCE Last year we basked on the beautiful shores of Hilton Head and dug our toes in the sand, coming away renewed and refreshed with our anchor set on Jesus Christ. This year we have come to the big mountains of Montana where great adventures await all who chose to view the pinnacles of the Rockies. Both of us co-chairs love the mountains. We spend many summers hiking and backpacking. People often tell us, “Oh, I would never do that! That’s way too hard!” And they are pretty much right. It is hard work; you sweat, get achy muscles, sleep on hard surfaces, get dusty and can’t take a nice hot shower at the end of the long day. So why do we do it? It reminds us a bit about our journey in medicine. We study hard in college to get into medical school, survive residency somehow, make it through a fellowship or our first job. Some of us have a marriage or family to fit into our already busy lives, some navigate the singleness that sometimes comes with a medical career or missions. On top of that, we follow Jesus wherever He takes us, which often the church doesn’t always understand. We hold this conference every year because we are a unique group of women (and spouses too for the married bunch)—Christian women physicians or dentists. Our journey takes us down through valleys and up through high passes. We need each other to help carry the load, to make it up to the pinnacle because the view from up there is stupendous! We remember the camaraderie and life shared together. It will be a time of rest, relaxation, learning, laughter and fellowship, sharing the hard journey and intimacy with God. God says in His Word: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, NIV 1984). So thank you for joining us for some great adventures in Big Sky. And hey, they even have chairlifts here to bring you up to the view—that’s God’s way of saying, “Sometimes I need to carry you up to the mountain to see the Promised Land I have for you!” We have something for everyone. This will be the place to get God’s perspective on why He’s called you to the field of medicine or dentistry. Seeing God’s faithfulness through our many speakers and worshipful music will help you trust Him more as you head back down to your valley of hard knocks. As you leave on Sunday, you will surely know why we both LOVE the mountains and find God’s rest here, even after a hard hike!

Welcome to the 2017 WPC Conference at Big Sky!

General CONFERENCE MAPS

Big Sky Resort

Welcome to Montana! Big Sky Resort is known for giving skiers and riders access to more skiing than anywhere else in the United States. The second largest ski resort in the United States, Big Sky Resort was the vision of NBC News co-anchorman Chet Huntley, who was a native of Montana. The elevation at Big Sky is 7,510 feet above sea level and rises to the height of 11,166 feet at the top of Lone Peak. The resort is the basecamp to Yellowstone National Park, which is about a 45-minute drive to the west gate entrance. Known for its winter activities, Big Sky has become an increasingly popular summer attraction as well with ziplines, archery, golf, mountain biking trails, horseback riding and much more.

ABOUT THE ALTITUDE The hotel is at 7,510 feet above sea level. The expedition to the Lone Peak is at 11,166 elevation. However, unless you choose to do that expedition during free time on Saturday, the highest elevation you will be at will be 7,510 elevation. Keep in mind, that if you were at the Glen Eyrie conference in 2015, you were at 6,519 elevation. In preparation for being at this higher altitude, one of our doctors suggests taking a full adult 325 mg aspirin DAILY (starting two days before arrival). Please continue taking a full adult 325 mg aspirin DAILY while you are here. Others encourage you to drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.

This year, our marquee event will be fly fishing on the spectacular Gallatin River. No experience necessary. We may also do some hiking in the world-class scenery around Big Sky. The Men’s Track will be facilitated by Ron Francis, (retired from engineering, finance, SM, CPA), and Chris Hahn, PhD, both husbands of our 2017 conference co-chairs. Ron is married to Patti Francis, who is a pediatrician in the San Francisco Bay Area. Chris is married to Connie who is a family medicine doctor in Bozeman, Montana. General WORSHIP AND DEVOTIONS

Worship Leader - Janice stain, MD

Janice Stain is a woman with many roles—mother, musician and doctor. In every area of her life, she seeks to worship and glorify God. She was born Janice O’Neil in Fresno, California to parents John, a Methodist minister, and Lee, a nurse’s aid. Although she grew up surrounded by music—singing and playing as a child—by age 7, Janice knew she wanted to be a doctor. She attended Stanford University where she organized, directed and served as pianist for the university’s gospel choir. After college Janice went to medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, earning her medical degree in 1990. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 1994, and she is now a board certified fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a singer and recording artist, Janice shares the love of God through gospel music. Janice draws on her experience as a mother, physician and artist to create and share music that’s a powerful testimony to the joy of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She performs at churches, conferences and other events throughout California. With her band, Janice has released three albums and two music videos. Whether she’s leading worship from a piano or speaking passionately from a platform, Janice Stain proclaims a message of inspiration and hope.

Devotions - Mike Chupp, MD

Mike Chupp, MD, is CMDA’s Executive Vice President. He was born in Frankfort, Indiana and grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a premedical degree in chemistry from Taylor University in 1984, and he then graduated as an AOA scholar with his medical degree from Indiana University in 1988. He completed a five-year general surgery residency at Methodist Hospital in 1993. Since then, he has been a member of the Surgical Department of Southwestern Medical Clinic (a large Christian multi-specialty group) and Lakeland Regional Health System in St. Joseph, Michigan. Mike has been married to Pam for 25 years and they have four children: Steven, Melody, Kayla and Ashley. They recently completed 20 years of service as career missionaries with World Gospel Mission, serving at Tenwek Mission Hospital in Kenya. Dr. Chupp testifies that he is an example of how life and ministry don’t always turn out the way you expect. In his words, “During my years of ministry at Tenwek Hospital, my surgical emphasis wasn’t on general surgery, but it was primarily on orthopedic trauma surgery. My work at the hospital also wasn’t what I had planned or expected over most of my career (80 to 90 percent of my time was devoted to administration and leadership for the hospital and WGM Kenya mission leadership). But God’s gifting and preparation and character development in our lives was not wasted. In 2015, Dr. David Stevens and Dr. Gene Rudd asked me to consider joining the executive leadership team at CMDA. Dr. Stevens was the Medical Director at Tenwek when I volunteered there as a medical student in 1988. He had a big influence on me to choose a career as a missionary surgeon there beginning in 1996. It is a great honor and exciting privilege to join the organization that has had the longest and deepest impact on my professional life as a Christian physician. Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6-7 to ‘…fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you…’ (NIV 2011). We believe God asked us to join the CMDA team at this time to fan into flame God’s call and the Spirit’s gifts to healthcare professionals who love Jesus first…until He comes back.”

General ABOUT US

What is Women Physicians in Christ?

The Women Physicians in Christ (WPC) Commission is a commission of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA). WPC (formerly known as Women in Medicine and Dentistry – WIMD) began as a result of a survey identifying the unique needs of female CMDA members in the early 1990s. The initiators of this effort, Dr. Patti Francis and Dr. Sally Knox, organized the first WIMD conference in Philadelphia in 1994. The ministry was headed by Rev. Marti Ensign, a CMDA employee from 1992 to 2000. After Rev. Ensign’s retirement, WIMD became a commission, first chaired by Dr. Darilyn Falck. In February 2015, we became Women Physicians in Christ – a new name, but with the same mission and focus. With further financial and prayer support from WPC members, our 15-member commission now organizes annual meetings, weekend retreats and publications. We sponsor student and resident scholarships for our meetings. We have WPC mission trips through Global Health Outreach (GHO) and WPC Marriage Enrichment Weekends. WPC is self-supporting, which means your CMDA dues are not applied to WPC. Your donations to WPC fund the WPC Administrator at the national office in Bristol, Tennessee, as well as all programming. Ultimately, we hope to have sufficient monthly giving to support a female physician or dentist on staff in Bristol as well.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to encourage and support Christian women physicians and dentists as we share the unique challenges of our multiple roles: • Through authentic relationships (Acts 2:42) • Through personal growth (Psalm 119:10) • Through discipleship and mentoring (Titus 2:3-4) • Through professional development (Colossians 3:23-24) Our vision is to see women doctors connected, inspired, equipped and using God’s gifts for God’s glory! We want to be the key resource for Christian women physicians and dentists in integrating their personal, professional and spiritual lives. General NEW THIS YEAR

WPC’s First Silent Art Auction

Through the generosity of CMDA members Dr. David and Bobbie Hafer, we are pleased to offer a Silent Art Auction this year. Paintings will be on display in the Upper Atrium through Saturday evening when bids will close. Winners will be announced at the banquet on Saturday night. Be sure to go and view the artwork and place your bids throughout the conference. Monies raised from the auction will be used for WPC’s general fund and to further the many ministries of WPC.

Dr. David and Bobbie Hafer

David and Bobbie have been married for 41 years, living in Montana. Lifetime members of CMDA, their membership extends back 24 years. David practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery in Great Falls for his working career, while Bobbie performed the administrative tasks and managed the office. David and Bobbie retired to the beautiful Proctor Valley just a few miles from Flathead Lake in Western Montana. They have always had an interest in art, but always as spectators. The International Charlie Russell Art Show and Auction is held in Great Falls annually each March, and they have attended it since their arrival in Great Falls. Through the many years of the Russell auction, they learned to appreciate both fine art and the talented artists who produce it. As a Christmas present one year, Bobbie bought all of the essentials for David to try his hand at what she knew was lying just below the surface in artistic talent. That resulted in both of them taking an art class and immediately falling in love with the oil painting media. They now take private lessons from several well-known artists in their area and work hard at developing their talent and passion for their new retirement career. They recently returned from a week-long plein air workshop with Jim Wilcox in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, one of the premier landscape artists of the West. Art provides a new adventure and learning experience for the Hafers, and it also provides true joy by allowing them to share their art with organizations like CMDA in furthering kingdom work through charitably donating their art for fundraising purposes. 2017 WPC Annual Conference — 19

SPEAK TO THE MOUNTAIN

Scripture uses the example of mountains in many ways. But perhaps there is no more challenging example than that of speaking to the mountain, even if your faith is small. What are those mountains in your life that need addressing? God has gifted you with many talents, yet in these areas, you feel hopeless and out of control. The size of your faith to approach these problems seems dwarfed in comparison to their size and impact in your life. But God has given us the instruction to speak to them.

DON’ T FORGET The Prayer Room will be open anytime during the conference for your use. And for students, the Study Hall will also be open throughout the conference.

THE MOUNTAINS OF LAUNDRY AND OTHER REAL MOUNTAINS

The day-to-day realities of work life and personal life seem to erode that initial calling to impact people’s lives. Mountains of faith seem replaced by mountains of laundry and the reality of daily challenges. Do these mountains count? How does God work through these mountains in our personal lives to accomplish His purposes?

IS THERE A DOCTOR ON BOARD? DEALING WITH IN-FLIGHT EMERGENCIES Jillian Horner, MD, FAAP Family Medicine, Boulder Community Hospital; Colorado

Workshop Description Discuss methods of evaluation and management of some of the more common in-flight emergencies. Objectives 1. Identify some of the more common in-flight emergencies. 2. Know the resources onboard. 3. Provide emergency care for common things. Speaker Bio Dr. Jillian Horner is a board certified family physician practicing full-time in Boulder, Colorado. Born and raised in Zimbabwe Africa, she came to the U.S. for college and medical school. After residency, she and her husband and two children left for the Marshall Islands (a remote group of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean). She practiced a full range of family practice including OB, ER and hospital medicine for 18 years before recently returning to Boulder. Both in residency and while out in the Marshall Islands, Jill participated in helicopter and fixed wing airplane medivacs. Upon their return to the U.S., Jillian and her husband began leading short-term healthcare mission trips with CMDA’s Global Health Outreach. Jill’s life goal is to be a servant of our Lord Jesus Christ and turn the eyes of those around her to see the glory of His salvation. She reminds herself our Lord is ever present and is our help in times of trouble (Hebrews 13:6). Jill thinks she was asked to do this talk because of the hundred of thousands of miles she has flown in her life and, by default, the numerous in-flight emergencies she’s attended on commercial airlines.

IDENTITY CRISIS: PHYSICIAN, CLINICIAN OR “PROVIDER” Linda Flower, MD Medical Director, Tomagwa Healthcare Medical Clinic

Workshop Description Whether we are physicians or physician-extenders, the new designation as “provider” just does not convey the full extent of our training nor the responsibility we have in our patients’ lives. This workshop will discuss how we got here and how we might find our way back to a more ethical, professional and edifying practice. Objectives 1. Discuss the meaning of professional and how it applies to medical practices. 2. Identify barriers to the doctor-patient relationship. 3. Discuss ways to improve both our delivery of competent, compassionate medical care and our satisfaction in doing so.

Workshops #3

THE PRAYING DOCTOR Pam Liang, MD Pediatrician; Richmond, Texas

Workshop Description We know we need to pray more, but how do we do that as we juggle our careers, family and other commitments? Prayer should not be just another item to check off our endless to-do lists. It is precious time that strengthens our relationship with our Lord and transforms us to be the women He created us to be. We will explore the richness of including praise, confession, thanksgiving and listening into our regular prayer routines. We will discuss the value of basing our prayers on Scripture and listening to what God has to teach us as we seek His presence. We will learn about online and printed resources which can help us build a consistent prayer life. Most importantly, we will practice praying Scripture together and waiting expectantly for what God will do! Speaker Bio Dr. Liang graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and has practiced pediatrics for 20 years. She works part-time with underserved patients at a federal qualified health center. This allows her to stay involved with her four young adult and teen children, her church and Moms in Prayer ministry. She has participated in prayer groups and Bible studies since college and serves on the South Texas Moms in Prayer state leadership team.

THE CHALLENGES WE HAVE FACED AND CONTINUE TO FACE AS WOMEN IN MEDICINE Panel led by Lisa Reimer

Workshop Description From Lisa, “At my first WPC event almost nine years ago, I first started hearing the stories of many who have gone before me on the path to becoming a Christian woman physician. Their stories continue to inspire and amaze, especially the ones who were literally the first women in their programs or the first women to have a baby while in training or... on and on.... So I have invited some of them to sit on a panel so they can share their stories with you, and so you too can get to ask them questions and learn from and be inspired by how they have literally paved the way so that today our training as women isn’t as difficult (although still challenging!) as it once was. Thank you to everyone who has gone before us, to those on the panel and to those who should be on the panel but who I missed. I know I couldn’t have done what I’m doing today without you doing it first.” Speaker Bio Lisa Reimer is a non-traditional medical student on an Air Force scholarship. She got her BA in 2003 with a double major in psychology and religious studies, with a minor in international studies. She then moved to Los Angeles, California as a leader and volunteer with a new church plant; she also worked full-time in various social service jobs. God called her to return to school to pursue being a missionary physician, and after an already long and challenging journey, she’s currently in her fourth year of medical school at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. She’s been happily married to Derek Reimer since 2007, who is active duty Air Force, normally working in the space program but currently teaching ROTC at the same school as Lisa so they can live together. Panelists Gloria Halverson, MD Barb Okamoto, MD Ruth Bolton, MD Gertrude Frishmuth, MD (via technology) Dorothy Barbo, MD (via technology)

Event Information THE GRAND RESCUE

The story that became legend. Brief three-minute introduction to the film followed by Q and A with audience. The film is based on the book We Aspired: The Last Innocent Americans. In 1967, on the North Face of the Grand Teton, seven rescuers risked their lives to save a severely injured climber and his companion. The rescue took three harrowing days, pushed the team to the edge of their abilities and cemented a lifelong bond. The Grand Rescue humbles us to the majestic Grand Teton, exposes the tenuous relationship of man and the mountain, reveals the endurance of the human spirit and recounts one of the most infamous rescues of its time. GO FOR IT! MEDICAL MISSIONS PANEL

Pam Liang, MD; Brenda Abraham, MD; and Sherry-Ann Brown, MD, PhD Workshop Description Many of us have thought about serving on a medical mission trip but are deterred by various circumstances. Thankfully, it’s never too late or too early to serve! We will share our experiences on different trips with Global Health Outreach (GHO), WPC and other options, with special emphasis on the House of Hope and GHO family trips. Even if this doesn’t seem to be the season to serve abroad, you can still support mission trips by praying and encouraging others. Speaker Bios Dr. Dr. Abraham has been in practice for 25 years in family medicine and sports medicine. She lives in and trained in Minnesota. STRESS IN THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER - 1 HOUR CME

Physicians have the highest burnout rate of any American worker: the range is between 30 to 65 percent. It is estimated that more than 70 percent of all physicians will experience symptoms of “over work” sometime in their career, and female physicians are at highest risk. By exploring this topic, Dr. Miller hopes to equip providers to better recognize early systems of overwork, set a pace they can keep for their lifetime and work collaboratively on this issue, to help us thrive in the workplace and avoid burnout. Objectives 1. Identify risk and discuss incidence of physician burnout and its effect on practice. 2. Promote and improve physician stress in the workplace. 3. Provide meaningful tools to help identify burnout and promote wellness in the workplace.

HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP FROM THE SECOND CHAIR: MAXIMIZING INFLUENCE WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN CHARGE Mike Chupp, MD Executive Vice President, CMDA; Bristol, Tennessee

Workshop Description Whether you are an institutional, organizational or departmental director or a subordinate leader, you appreciate the incredible advantage of management teams with subordinate leaders who use their influence for good throughout the organization. In this talk we will discuss principles for thriving in a subordinate leadership position in order to bring glory to the Father, even if our first chair leader isn’t a believer or a great team leader. Speaker Bio Mike Chupp, MD, was born in Frankfort, Indiana and grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a pre-medical degree in chemistry from Taylor University in 1984, and then he graduated as an AOA scholar with his medical degree from Indiana University in 1988. Spine Surgeon; Jackson Hole, Wyoming Dr. Neal is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and former director of Spine Surgery at the University of Southern California. Dr. Neal has practiced in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for the last 18 years. In 1999, she was pinned beneath the water while kayaking in South America and drowned. Session Information TO HEAVEN AND BACK

Is there life after death? Is God real? Is there sufficient reason to live by faith? Dr. Mary Neal’s walk with God has been both ordinary and extraordinary. She drowned on a South American river and went to heaven, conversed with angels and returned to earth. Her experiences provide confirmation that miracles still occur, show how God keeps His promises and explain why there is sufficient reason to live by faith. Dr. Neal will tell the story of her drowning and remarkable near death experience, as well as sharing how the experience transformed her faith, changed her perception of both life and death and provided joy even in the face of deep personal loss. She will also describe how this transformation can be achieved by all, even without dying.

With God’s guidance, I will endeavor to be a good steward of my skills and of society’s resources. I will convey God’s love in my relationships with family, friends, and community. I will aspire to reflect God’s mercy in caring for the lonely, the poor, the suffering, and the dying. With God’s direction, I will respect the sanctity of human life. Give to Grow Women Physicians in Christ Automatic Giving Did you know the programs and ministries of Women Physicians in Christ are completely self-funded? We are grateful for the generosity of office space provided by CMDA but beyond that, commissions like WPC do not receive funds from CMDA.

So join us as we Give to Grow! You can help us develop an ongoing funding stream, providing the ability to budget, plan and develop our mission. Online giving can be set up easily at www.cmda.org/wpc or you can sign up here at the conference at the WPC bookstore. Thank you for helping us better plan for WPC’s future through your automatic giving.

HILTON HEAD MEMORIES 2016

Why do I keep spending so much time and energy to go to the annual WP C conferences, especially when life as a medical student has been crazy? WP C is t he one place where I don’t have t o explain who I am, why I have chosen t o do what I’ve done or why I am choosing t o stay in a career t hat is so dif f icult. The women at WP C “get it.” They get t hat God’s cal ling is higher t han my comfort. They get t he drive t o pursue it. And t hey get my doubts and t houghts of giving it al l up. They get al l of me—my C hristian side, my successf ul side, my science- y side, my future physicia n side, my spouse side and my hopeful ly-futur emom side. WP C is t he one place where I don’t wonder how much I am underst ood. I can just let go and enjoy t he fel lowship. Because of our mutual love for Jesus and for medicine , we can communicate aut hentical ly and deeply. I can let my guard down and be real.
