At Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA), we aim to motivate, educate and equip healthcare students and practicing professionals to glorify God in all we do. We believe Christian healthcare professionals have the best opportunity to influence people for the kingdom of God, both here in the U.S. and around the world. We want to thank Dr. Chuck Sands and California Baptist University (CBU) for joining with us, not just in allowing us to hold this event on their campus, but also in agreeing to co-sponsor REMEDY WEST. They invested heavily with us so we can make student registration fees more reasonable. CBU is committed to similar kingdom purposes and outcomes, making it an easy decision to sponsor this conference with us. Just a word about the logo for REMEDY WEST, designed by Jason Stevens. The circular symbol is from the fourth century AD Greek letters Chi (χ) Rho (ρ), which early Roman Christians placed on tombs and in prominent places to identify themselves as followers of Christ, their King and Savior. This combined symbol also bears some resemblance to Rx, which is from the ancient Latin word for “recipe” meaning “to take,” which long predates its current meaning most often attached to food. Healthcare professionals prescribe medicines and/or procedures as the healing remedy for physical, mental or emotional illness. We believe Jesus Christ is the remedy that offers ultimate healing to all people everywhere in order to forgive our sins and heal our broken relationships with God, the one who created the world and everyone in it. Jeremiah declared, “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise” (Jeremiah 17:14, NIV 1984). During this conference, we pray you will listen for the voice of the LORD and respond eagerly and willingly to what you hear from Him. We pray you will follow Jesus’ example and words to His disciples: “Tell everyone about the Kingdom of God, and heal the sick” (Luke 9:2, paraphrase). Yours is an incredible and unique privilege with the capacity to heal, teach and offer spiritual reconciliation with God, all in one encounter, just as Jesus did. Rick Donlon, MD Rick Donlon grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Texas Christian University in 1986. He completed medical school at LSU-N.O., and a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. In 1995, he and three medical school classmates opened a primary care health center for the poor in Memphis’ most medically underserved neighborhood. The work eventually grew to include eight health centers, three dental clinics and a family medicine residency program—providing over 160,000 patient visits in 2013. Many of the medical and dental professionals, including Dr. Donlon, moved into the underserved communities where they work. Over the last decade they’ve sent long-term medical missionaries to Central and South Asia and the Horn of Africa. In 2014, Dr. Donlon and 20 other physicians and mid-level providers left their original organization to found Resurrection Health, continuing their vision of community-based, Christ-centered primary and hospital care for the least served—in Memphis and around the world. Dr. Donlon, his wife Laurie and their seven children live in the Binghampton neighborhood.
Infinity War and End Game (Christian Missions in the Third Millennium) Tectonic cultural and political shifts are dramatically altering missionary strategies and tactics, both at home and abroad. As the eternal struggle moves to its endgame, an important role remains for Christian healthcare disciples.

Session Information Cultures are mixing more than ever in our world today. The waves of migration and the influx of displaced refugees are increasing everywhere. People from various countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are becoming visible and well established in the broader and regional West. Practitioners, providers and helping-professionals are in greater need to better understand these populations and gain practical skills to effectively work with them. Yet, there is a lot of confusion and anxiety about who are the Arabs, Muslims and Middle Easterners? How large and diverse is that population in North America? This workshop will focus on understanding their backgrounds, mentalities, psychological needs, religious cultures, social challenges (both the ones they face and represent), adaptation-assimilation struggles and civil contributions. We will correct some misconceptions about Arabs/Middle Easterners and highlight some of their cultural dynamics, mental-emotional functioning, communication styles, social values and generational differences. We will provide some practical guidelines and therapeutic tools on how to best work with them in a caring and effective way.

Session Information This workshop will address the magnitude of the problem of human trafficking and discuss the importance of the role of healthcare professionals. We will look at the health needs of trafficking victims, how to identify trafficking victims and what to do when they present to you for care.

Session Information Dr. Patrick’s objective is for all of us to be better able to bear witness to what the Lord has done, often not what we wanted to be done. Morally neutral teaching does not exist because we all use the word “ought” when we teach clinical medicine. Students ask what they ought to do? But ought does not exist in a world of materialistic naturalism. The objectives of this session are to understand the power of sharp questions, understand the denial of the problem of the origin of ethics, help children come into this world with moral knowledge and to argue effectively to rights of conscience.

Session Information
This workshop will present opportunities and experiences using healthcare education as a domestic mission field to not only reach patients, but also to reach students and colleagues for the Lord. Each speaker has personal experience in their area of service. Training Primary Care Physicians in a Community Hospital Program and in a Church Healthcare Clinic – Steve Baker, MD Dr. Baker started a healthcare clinic at his church while also serving as a faculty member in a community hospital family medicine training program. Working with students and residents in both settings, he has had opportunities to also provide mission experiences for them in Indonesia. He will share his experience in both settings. Using Healthcare Education in a University Medical School Setting – Sega Cissoko, MD Dr. Cissoko is on the faculty of a medical school, but prior to this was a fulltime missionary in West Africa for 20 years. He will discuss opportunities to work with medical students and colleagues in an academic center. Using Dental Education as an Outreach to Dental Students, Residents and Patients – Roger Joe, DMD Dr. Joe will discuss the importance of using dental education and opportunities to mentor and train dental students, dental hygienists and assistants, as well as doing short-term dental missions. Despite the recognition that the best mentoring experience is the result of an intentional and committed relationship between mentor and mentee, there remains confusion over what a good mentor does to ensure the best possible outcome for the mentee. Session Information Our patients come to us with emotional, spiritual, intellectual and physical needs. Best practice requires us to address all four quadrants. Many (most?) healthcare professionals (HCPs) practice reductionistic medicine after the model of their training. Many HCPs have received no training how to broach the spiritual component or needs of our patients. So what should it look? What can we do? This workshop will provide us with simple steps we can take to move like fully integrating our faith into practice regardless of specialty. Objectives 1. Joshua Bogunjoko, MD Dr. Joshua Bogunjoko began a five-year term as the International Director of SIM in June 2013. Joshua’s life in Christ began during high school. He surrendered to the Lord’s direction to study medicine, and he graduated and completed his residency in family medicine at a mission hospital in Jos, Nigeria. He later served at the SIM Hospital in Galmi, Niger, with his wife, Dr. Joanna Bogunjoko, eventually becoming both the Chief Medical Officer and hospital director.
What is the Connection between Medical Skill, Medical Mission and the Least of These? Using the story of the building of the Tabernacle and God’s specific instructions to Moses in Exodus 31:1-11, we will examine the unique place of medicine and medical mission in God’s project of reaching the nations in 21st century mission. Connecting this with the unique ability of medical mission to touch lives in ways that are not quite possible for many other professions, and with the background of the healing of the woman with hemorrhage in Mark 5:21-34, we will examine medicine’s power of empathy and ability to connect with people, especially those in difficult places and hard circumstances. We will look at abilities of those who see and deploy this skill as God’s gift for His purpose to impact individuals, households and societies, including its social, spiritual, economic and relational impact. In short, we will examine the ability of medicine to touch and transform the realities of “the least of these” wherever they are found.

Cultures are mixing more than ever in our world today. The waves of migration and the influx of displaced refugees are increasing everywhere. People from various countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are becoming visible and well established in the broader and regional West. Practitioners, providers and helping-professionals are in greater need to better understand these populations and gain practical skills to effectively work with them. Yet, there is a lot of confusion and anxiety about who are the Arabs, Muslims and Middle Easterners? How large and diverse is that population in North America? This workshop will focus on understanding their backgrounds, mentalities, psychological needs, religious cultures, social challenges (both the ones they face and represent), adaptation-assimilation struggles and civil contributions. We will correct some misconceptions about Arabs/Middle Easterners and highlight some of their cultural dynamics, mental-emotional functioning, communication styles, social values and generational differences. We will provide some practical guidelines and therapeutic tools on how to best work with them in a caring and effective way.

Session Information This was a hard lesson for Dr. Patrick because he spent years working on the care of malnourished children and was rewarded in being part of the group that wrote the definitive protocols. Africa taught him that not all stories of meaning open up the world in the same way. The objectives of this session are to understand that experimental science does not arise de novo, to understand that fatalism is deep in Eastern religion and in animism, to understand that the post modern nihilist has the same problem and to learn the first steps in unpacking this problem.

Mike Chupp, MD Dr. Chupp received his medical degree from Indiana University in 1988, and he then completed a general surgery residency in 1993. For 20 years, he served as a healthcare missionary at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya. He wore several leadership hats while in Kenya. In 2015, Dr. Chupp joined CMDA as Executive Vice President. In September 2019, he began serving as CEO of CMDA.
Action in Hope: Across the Street and Around the World Our postmodern culture has abandoned notions of abiding and universal truth and embraced autonomy and tolerance. Finding any reason to hope is problematic for those who increasingly find faith irrelevant at best and the enemy often. The authentic disciple of Jesus Christ in healthcare “overflows with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13) and counters the despair of the world in which he or she lives. Such hope produces actions that are self-sacrificing and motivated by Christ’s compassion, whether or not the Christ follower is serving in their own community or as an alien and stranger in a foreign culture in a land far away.

The Global Health Strategy Network of the IMB seeks to glorify God through the identification and implementation of health strategies which facilitate the multiplication of churches among all peoples.

Medical Ambassadors International (MAI) mission is equipping communities through Christ-centered health and development. In 1975, as South Vietnam was falling, a man name Dr. Raymond Benson was on the last airlift from the roof of the American Embassy. Dr. Benson’s vision was for Christian medical professionals to establish clinics around the world. His hope was to heal people both physically and spiritually. Out of that desire, Medical Ambassadors was formed. While Dr. Benson was correct in his assessment of the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world, he did not anticipate that the same people would keep coming back to the clinic with the same preventable illnesses. It became clear that this clinic-based model was not sustainable. In fact, we were creating a culture of dependency within the communities we were trying to help. In light of this, Medical Ambassadors transitioned to a new model. Instead of going into a community and giving free care, we entered bringing only questions. Instead of giving the communities what we thought they needed, we asked local leaders, “What do you need to be happy and healthy?” We let their answers guide our focus and started developing lessons on those topics. In time, the available lessons included far more than only health topics. Depending on what the local leaders determined their communities needed, there were teachings on how to work together and solve problems, teachings on agriculture, literacy, family relationships, micro-enterprise, coping with disability and more.
