Brings Magic of Ballroom Dancing to Dr. Phillips Grigor Asryan has spent most of his life gliding across the dance floor. The 11-time ballroom and Latin Dance Champion was so highly respected in his home country of Armenia that he was cast as a professional instructor on two of the country’s top ballroom dancing TV shows. Now he and his wife, Angela, are teaching the residents of Dr. Phillips the timeless art of ballroom dancing as the owners of Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Dr. Phillips. Grigor began his dancing career in Armenia in 1997, competing in various dance competitions in Armenia for more than a decade while studying dance at the Armenian State University of Physical Culture of Sport Dancing. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Latin and ballroom dance in 2007, then took part in a TV competition organized by ADT in Armenia, and placed 3rd. In 2011, he was cast as a professional on “So You Think You Can Dance Armenia,” then on “Dancing with the Stars Armenia” the following year. He began his career with Fred Astaire Dance Studio in 2012, and WWW.CMDMAGAZINE.COM
has achieved various top teacher and top specialist awards throughout his career. Angela began her dance training in ballet, jazz, lyrical, and contemporary dance as a child, and continued until 2010. She was a part of one the most prestigious dance studios in Rochester, New York, where she participated in various dance competitions, summer programs, and recitals. In 2012, she began teaching ballroom and Latin dancing as well as dancing professionally at Fred Astaire Dance Studio in New York. “We believe our extensive background in dance and our customer service skills has greatly helped us find success as dance studio owners,” Angela said. “Our professionalism and dance knowledge gained after many years of training has helped us to get to where we are today. Being a part of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio System for more than 6 years has helped us continuously improve our dancing and teaching.” The Fred Astaire Dance Studio is located at 8060 Via Dellagio Way #210, Orlando, FL 32819. How to Save Your Husband’s Life
e often hear from women who complain that the men in their lives—fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, boyfriends—pay little to no attention to their health. As a result, many women resent that the responsibility for keeping those men healthy has fallen to them. Unfortunately, men’s lackadaisical attitude toward their health contributes to the fact that they are 90 percent more likely than women to die of heart disease, 20 percent more likely to die of a stroke, and 40 percent more likely to die of cancer. Overall, women now outlive men by about five years. The good news is that half of male premature deaths are preventable. But to accomplish that, men will have to make some serious lifestyle changes, something too few are willing to do, in part because from the time they are little, they are raised up not to cry, complain, or show signs of weakness. Ironically, women pay a price for men’s poor health: because you live longer, you may see your husband and/or son suffer or die unnecessarily, leaving you to live on without their love, support, and companionship. Here’s what you can do right now to help.
Know the Warning Signs ● Does he get up five times a night to go to the bathroom or have you noticed blood in his urine? This can be an indication of bladder, colon, kidney or prostate problems. ● Erectile dysfunction is an incredibly common, and potentially serious condition that men generally fail to discuss with their doctors. More than half the time, it’s caused by a physical problem: atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, or low testosterone levels. So if you want to make love and your husband says he has a headache, pay attention.
Learn about Men’s Health Because they often skip routine medical appointments, many men never learn that they have a deadly disease until it’s too late. Every year, over 160,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 26,000 die (nearly the number of women who die of breast cancer). Caught early,
Check Him Out Self-exams don’t have to be done by yourself, so why not ask your husband to help you with your monthly breast exams while you help with his testicular exams? While you’re at it, do a head-to-toe skin check on one another. Women tend to get skin cancers on their hands, face, and legs;

through either a digital rectal exam (DRE) or a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, this disease is nearly always curable. Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in men ages 15 to 35 and, like prostate cancer, is highly curable if caught early. But too few men know that they should examine their testicles monthly, and even fewer know how to do so.
WWW.CMDMAGAZINE.COM
men get them on their backs, where they can’t see them. Get Him to the Doctor It’s critical to get your husband (and son) into the habit of regular medical check-ups. Changes over time are key in assessing health. Encourage him to make his own appointments, but if he won’t, do it yourself. Doctors I have interviewed tell me that at least 25% of appointments for male patients are made by women.
Be Patient The goal here is to get your husband to take better care of himself, and to get your son to start building good habits. These things take time. But with each small change, you’ll improve the quality and increase the length of the life you have with the men you love. June is Men’s Health Month. For more info visit www.menshealthnetwork.org
Promote a Healthy Lifestyle The three most effective things you can do are to put your husband on a low-fat, high-fiber diet, help him get regular exercise, and get him to quit smoking. These steps can drastically reduce the chances that he’ll succumb to the leading causes of death: heart and pulmonary diseases, cancer, stroke, and diabetes.

‘Text Neck’ Means Trouble For ose Addicted to Mobile Devices
W
ell before the invention of cellphones, medical experts agreed that poor posture is the leading cause of back and neck pain. But the explosion of 24-7 cellphone use has seriously compounded this problem, and even given rise to a new medical condition: “Text Neck.” “Text neck” is the nickname for all the back, neck and spinal issues affecting those who spend too much time on their cellphones and mobile devices. It is due to the constant hunching over people do to peer into their mobile screens, which malforms the spine. Physicians are reporting children as young as eight years old are affected. Collectively, Americans check their smartphones over 8 billion times per day. And young adults age 18 to 24 send or receive an average of 109.5 text messages on a typical day. “Just look at any crowd of young people, 12 VOl. 13 NO. 36 / HealTH
chances are most are exhibiting very poor posture from tilting their head down to read their device. This forces their neck and back muscles to work at awkward angles, just to keep the body upright, and pain and strain is often the result,” says Robert Gearhart, an operating room nurse and co-inventor of Body Aline, an exercise machine designed to strengthen the back and realign the spine. “Cellphones aren’t going anywhere, so it looks like text neck will become a health problem of epidemic proportion in the years ahead,” Gearhart says. “If the trend continues, it looks like in 20 years the number of people who will have spine issues due to this will be astronomical.” He says the best way to check your mobile device is to stand up straight and look at your device at eye level instead of reading it next to your torso, which usually results in your chin going down towards your WWW.CMDMAGAZINE.COM

This provides a safe and natural passive isometric exercise to restore the natural curve to the neck. Of course, it is not just mobile devices that can give a person back problems; there are many causes and some, such as arthritis, have no easy answers. However, Gearhart says that frequently the cause of back pain is something that can be adjusted with proper lifestyle choices, such as: • Take breaks from desk jobs. When working at a computer, take a short break every 15 or 20 minutes, then move around, and change your body and head positions. • Adjust your workspace. Set your computer monitor at eye level. Raise your smartphone to eye level rather than lowering your head. Get a tablet holder to elevate your device close to eye level. If possible, get a
standing desk or an ergonomic chair. Don’t slouch at your desk. • Use voice-to-text as often as possible. This cuts down on the amount of time you are looking down at your phone. • Hold your phone at eye level. Do not look down and allow your chin to move towards your chest when you are on your mobile device. This causes the back of the neck to support the head instead of the shoulders. “Taking some preventative measures,” Gearhart says, “is much easier than trying to treat a spine that is already out of alignment.” Robert Gearhart and Jason Bowman, a certified personal trainer and former engineer, created Body Aline. www.bodyaline.com

hen it comes to fresh fruit, watermelon is a top pick in many households. It’s available year-round and makes for a nutritious snack, but its great taste is the reason most people buy watermelon, according to research from the National Watermelon Promotion Board. Not only is watermelon a tasty snack by itself, it’s a great complement to other flavors, making it easy to create flavorful pairings. This sweet take on pizza combines watermelon with a host of other good-for-you ingredients for a delicious treat. Healthy enough for breakfast and sweet enough for dessert, this pizza can make its way into your weekly meal rotation. For another nutritious option, consider this Buddha bowl featuring watermelon, which contains higher levels of lycopene, an antioxidant, than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. Watermelon is also an excellent source of vitamin C, and it provides vitamin B6 and potassium. It’s the perfect sweet addition to balance the savory flavors of this traditional plant-based Buddha bowl. Each of these recipes leaves plenty of room for personalization; experiment with your favorite flavors to make each dish your own. Also remember that watermelon travels well, so these
