THE PAUL DO BOQUILOBO BIOSPHERE RESERVE The Paul do Boquilobo Biosphere Reserve was the first Portuguese area to integrate the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, being recognized as a representative sample of a palustrine ecosystem high valued in terms of biodiversity conservation.
The Paul do Boquilobo Biosphere Reserve integrates now the parishes of Pombalinho, Azinhaga, Golegã, Riachos and also the Union of Parishes of Brogueira, Parceiros de Igreja and Alcorochel, in a total area of 5896 hectares.
With an initial area of 554 hectares and being a reserve of 1st generation it did not include economical activities nor a governance model that included the participation of several local authorities.
The Action/Management Plan (Development) of the The Paul do Boquilobo Biosphere Reserve includes conservation measures for ecosystems, appreciation and development of sustainable activities and also measures that promote knowledge, environmental education and research.
Through management protocol, signed in 2014, the biosphere reserve began to have a management model shared by four entities: ONGATEJO, Golegã City Hall, Torres Novas City Hall; and national nature and forests conservation institute – ICNF, which is supported by an advisory board of more than 50 Entities. This advisory board includes municipalities, educational establishments, nongovernmental organizations, local development associations, farmers and other economic activities representatives.
The Paul do Boquilobo Biosphere Reserve intends to develop actions in this qualified and differentiated natural that promote quality products and services and consequently create economic and social value for the local region.
