The visuals and feelings of the summer are real as it definitely becomes hotter, the flowers are more radiant and sweet smells of flora emanates from every corner. This is also evident in the new fashion, hairstyles, shoes and cocktails trending around town. I might even add that many of my fellow country men and women even look less stressed, happier and are more pleasant to deal with during the season.
In this special Baby issue of GEM, you will find a variety of articles to get you in the perfect mood
for summer. First, since summer is the time for renewal, we are introducing the ten bundles of joy from the GEM/PAMPERS Cutest Baby Photo Contest this year. They alone with the hundreds of entries we received made the contest exciting but very difficult to pick ten finalists since we considered all as winners. I would like to extend thanks to the team at Ansa McAL for partnering with us once again this year to execute this much anticipated and popular contest. Special thanks are also extended to all the parents who participated. This edition is also filled with many of the jubilee events and fashion as we continue to celebrate our 50th independence year. Enjoy the summer days and see you around town!

Compton Babb (left) and Christopher Taylor (right)
Christopher Taylor Job: Graphic Designer & Illustrator Favourite Dish: Chow Mein / Roti & Curry Favourite National Song: Oh Beautiful Guyana Favourite Movie: To Sir with Love GEM: What was your inspiration for the design of the official logo for Guyana’s 50th independence anniversary? Christopher Taylor: What Compton and I realized is that usually the atmospheric mood or people surrounding us get our creative gears turning to create artwork that’s just as impacting or unique as the moment. We are the type of artists that are usually drawn by mood and even moment of the day. Inspiration for Guyana’s 50th Independence logo formed from our deep sense of pride and love for our country. We felt a burst of excitement and patriotism that gripped us to think about designing and forming a logo that would accurately represent this milestone in our nation. GEM: What does the logo signify/ represent? CT: The logo itself is centered around the number ‘50’ which represents Guyana’s Golden Independence Anniversary. 2016 is the Year of Jubilee. The logo portrays the celebration of Guyana resilience, commitment, stability and self-determination. The style of the number ’50’ illustrates the elegance, artistry and cooperativeness of all Guyanese. It is symbolical of 50 years of Independence from the European rule and the prosperity that the nation has experienced from 1966 to 2016. The green filling signifies our agriculture and great lush forests. The red border speaks of the zeal and dynamic nature of nation-building which lies before the young and independent Guyana.

The Jaguar is representative of power, ferocity and valour. He is the embodiment of aggressiveness. Guyana, ‘Land of the Jaguar’, is a golden nation moving forward to establish itself in the world by the strength of our multi-ethnic society. The Jaguar represents our ability to face our fears; to roar with aggressiveness as we charge into the future as one people, one nation, one destiny. GEM: Who do you look up to for inspiration? CT: The most cliché thing to do would be to name a modern artist or maybe even start off with an inspirational quote. However, a majority of my inspiration comes from the man responsible for all things great and beautiful, God. Who else can create such a fascinating thing like the human body or even the interactive composition of the landscape at sunset? While experiencing new adventures and being around everyday people who are all inspiring in their own unique ways, I ultimately look up to the grandeur of God for inspiration. His love and mercy is boundless and I believe all things creative whether useful or harmful stem from his roots. GEM: People would be surprised if you tell them… CT: I think people would be surprised that more than Roti & Curry and
singing (which I love dearly), I have a connection to felines and as a surprise my initials spell out ‘Cat’... Christopher A. Taylor (C.A.T.), Now you’re surprised aren’t you? GEM: Tell us about your family. CT: I grew up in a devout Christian family which is so huge we could be enough to be considered a village on our own. Both close and extended we are a collage of talented, selfless, fun, hardworking and a multi-ethnic group of people. Our most common quality is the support we give to each other in times of peril, which is unconditional. I have two (2) loving parents, Solomon A. Taylor & Dawn Mentore-Taylor and six (6) beautiful siblings; three (3) older and three (3) younger than myself... not forgetting the Cats. Apart from having a great sense of humor, innovation and resourcefulness are great family traits. It would be 11:45 pm and someone would suddenly say “let's have a party for ‘Grans’ (My Grandmother, Juliet Mentore)” and by 12:01 pm the room is filled with guests and everything is already prepared!...Yea, I know... magic! GEM: How would you describe yourself? CT: I see myself as a creative visionary who’s genuine and eccentric
approach will help to pave a way for local creatives in the future. I also like to think of myself as a disciplined, humbled and understanding individual who loves to make people feel appreciated and comfortable to release any emotional burdens, this comes from the humanitarian trait I adopted from my family. Although I can be very expressive through the arts and conversations, I am also a dedicated introvert that enjoys some peace, great music, books and videogames. GEM: What project are you currently working on? CT: Professionally one of the many projects that I’m working on along with a team of remarkable Animators and Artists is; the upcoming ‘Nancy’s School Daze’, which will be Guyana’s first animated TV series. It is a collaborative effort between E-Networks and Guyana’s leading animation studio, Tinninben Animation. Personally I’m working on a few projects ranging from Character Art (3D & 2D), Digitally Painted Portraits and Photography, to voluntarily teaching a few lessons in Adobe Photoshop of which I am a master at. These are things that I’m passionate about and so I feel elated to practice and teach what I’ve learned. Please check out my work on facebook. com/chrisa1taylor or via e-mail chrisa1taylor@gmail.com
Compton Babb Job: Artist Favourite Dish: Creole Foods Favourite National Song: Beautiful Guyana Favourite Movie: A Beautiful Mind GEM: What was your inspiration for the design of the official logo for Guyana’s 50th independence anniversary? We are the type that are usually drawn

CB: My life has been molded by several caring individuals who I have developed a long-lasting relationship with. I am fortunate to have such great support from family, friends and colleagues but my main inspiration throughout my life has been my father, Compton Babb, Snr. From him, I learned to be diligent and hardworking. I have been inspired to stay modest and focused on what my ambitions are. I value the example he has worked hard to set. GEM: People would be surprised if you tell them… CB: People would be surprised to know that I am an avid lover of old cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, Johnny Bravo, Johnny Quest, Speed Racer, Jimmy Neutron, Popeye and so many more. I also think people will be surprised to know that I love dancing which allows me to feel relaxed and express my happiness at the same time.

GEM: Tell us about your family. CB: Born to Compton, Snr. and Jennifer Babb I am the elder of two sons. We were raised in strong Christian beliefs, which we still hold onto. I am married to my best friend and most magnificent woman in the world, Lilian Babb. She has been my encouragement and strong support. My wife is an amazing person with many positive traits, but her patience is probably the best of all. Together we have one beautiful son, Cornelius Babb. He is my pride and joy. He and I enjoy a close connection and I look forward to our friendship that is developing. GEM: How would you describe yourself? CB: I would describe myself as eccentric, confident and artistic. I think I am distinctive and creative in so many ways. I am remarkable for my ability to adapt to almost any situation and to make do with whatever is at hand to reach my goals. I work with great concentration while projecting an aura of freshness and enthusiasm. I am also very disciplined but I can portray a playfully light attitude that allows me to reach depths of imagination, fantasy and reality. I think I tend to be extroverted and introverted. I can be in the thick of a crowd or sitting in the sidelines observing what is happening around me. I am both humble and proud at the same time. I respect my field of work and I am proud of my achievements. I enjoy being unique in a world that values sameness.
GEM: What would you like to see done for Guyana over the next 50 years? C B : Pe o p l e h a v e a l w a y s b e e n intrigued of what the future will look like. Guyana has changed a lot since its Independence 50 years ago. I would like to see Guyana develop its communication system. There have been so many inventions and advances in this area that would make the rest of the world recognize Guyana for all its many treasures. There is still so much more that I wish for Guyana. I hope that Guyana can move towards fully benefitting from our oil and mineral deposits; c o n t i n u e d d e v e l o pm e n t o f o u r hinterland and making it more accessible for all; hopefully a better state for the poor Guyanese who feel disenfranchised; and definitely new inventions that make life a little easier and entertaining for some. GEM: What project are you currently working on? CB: Professionally I am a part of the team of Artists and Animators that is developing Guyana's first Animated TV Series, Nancy's School Daze scheduled for release through Tinniben Animation on September 25, 2016 on E-Networks Cable (E1). Privately, I am presently preparing for an exhibition for a ‘Portrait Party’ in New York, USA in September 2016 and portraits for various people. few weeks ago my husband woke to the sensation that the room was spinning around and began vomiting. This terrifying feeling persisted the entire day as he tried to stand. We finally decided that it was time to go to the hospital. It turned out that he had a mild case of Vertigo. Vertigo! What is that? It is a disorder believed to be caused by inner ear problems such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, meniere’s disease and vestibular neuritis. Untreated inner ear problems could lead to hearing loss. Vertigo or its sensations could also stem from head or neck injuries, a stroke, migraine headaches, a brain tumor and even dehydration. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV occurs when calcium

builds up in the inner ear canal. There are currently no known reasons for the cause of calcium buildup, but age is believed to be a factor.
spinning 2) Unbalanced feelings 3) Nausea and vomiting 4) Tilting in one direction
Meniere’s Disease, which is the buildup of fluid in the inner ear and changing barometric pressure, is believed to also be the cause of vertigo. According to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Meniere’s disease is an unstable inner ear which usually affects both men and women between the ages of 20-50 years old. Vestibular Neuritis is believed to be caused by viral infections such as colds and other respiratory infections. It affects the cochlear nerves that are associated with our sense of balance. Symptoms of vertigo include: 1) The sensation that the room is
Treatment for vertigo usually ranges from physical therapy which involves various movements of the head and positioning of the body to medications used to reduce symptoms of nausea and motion sickness. Antibiotics may also be used in the case of an infection. For the people with Meniere disease, water pills or diuretics are given to reduce the buildup of fluids in the inner ear. Sticking with a low salt diet may also be recommended in some cases. Most often, treatment for vertigo depends on the cause. However, most cases of vertigo are temporary and may need no treatment.

What is your current job title? Programme manager - NTN Radio 89.1fm You will mark your 20th milestone in broadcast this year, tell us how you first started and where. I started my career as a little lad playing my father's Greco stereo set at house parties and later at weddings. I always had a passion for broadcasting and after chairing a few Diwali pageants, I was invited by Mr. C.N. Sharma and his wife Savitree to co-host rapping with the public on CNS channel 12 and that’s how my career got started. Did you have any training/ certificates in broadcast prior to your starting your career in this field? Actually, apart from training sessions with Dr. Rovin Deodat and Mr. Ron Robinson all my training came from exposure through the first Assemblies of God Church in Vreed-en-hoop where I held several portfolios which created the platform for exposure in public speaking, debates etc. I have perused qualifications in accountancy and coupled with two decades of banking experience at various levels and lots of training by local and overseas professionals definitely added lots of value in my approach, speech and delivery in all types of programmes in both radio and television. 22 | GEM 72, 2016
Who were some of your mentors along the way and how did they help? As a little boy I loved listening to Mr. Matthew Allen on the radio. I often thought I can be like him and eventually God allowed things to fall in place and here I am 2 decades on television and radio broadcasting. Yo u w o u l d ' v e v e n t u r e d i n t o other areas, what prompted the switch and why did you return to broadcasting? Actually I really never switched until a couple of years ago since I was involved in a career in banking and did television and radio. Mostly on a voluntary basis since the bank never allowed any financial gains apart from that obtained through the bank. Eventually, that practice changed and I was able to pay for programmes.
bestowing his blessings on me, and the support of the advertisers and all of the wonderful fans. Incidentally, I am the longest private producer in Guyana especially for television. The first to have an English musical program on television, Music From The Heart which in now on 98,1 FM radio, along with sports progammes which includes “Let’s Talk Cricket” aired back then on GTV channel 10 and CNS channel 12. When I first started advertisers would actually laugh at me telling
me they have never heard about local programmes on television, but I have persisted and today there are so many persons hosting television programmes across Guyana. If you were to give an upcoming radio/television broadcaster 2 tips to better his/herself, what would they be? Always let God take the praises and not yourself since this can bring your downfall.
Radio has evolved drastically in Guyana, moving from analog to digital. What would you say are some of the changes that make a radio station's job easier today? The advent of new technology has revolutionized television and radio, from use of video cassettes to duds, likewise records to cd's and with the use of computers now large data bases of music are available from databases on the system files along with direct sourcing from the internet. It is amazing how the internet has brought a boom to radio fans, especially since Guyanese in the Diaspora can now listen to their favourite radio program and personalities from the comfort of their homes, vehicles etc. It’s amazing when I am in the USA to be able to listen to radio 89.1 FM in Guyana. How do you feel to celebrate 20 years in broadcast? It’s an achievement which could only have been possible because of the Lord Jesus Christ who has been GEM 72, 2016 | 23

Getting Prepared & What to Expect at Your Gynecological Exam
K
nowing what to expect at a gynecological exam could help eliminate some of the embarrassment and discomfort you may feel. Sometimes, walking with a trusted friend or having a nurse present during your exam, especially if your doctor is male could help reduce your fears and embarrassment. In order to provide you with the best care, your doctor will need to gather information on your family, sexual and medical history. Prior to your visit, make note of all the bodily changes you have noticed so that you will be able to discuss them with your doctor. This is also the best time to talk with your doctor about the right birth control method for you, and the best way to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases. And please do not be afraid to ask questions. After all, it is your health and you should be the one to take the initiative to learn as much as you can about it. Gynecological exams usually involve pelvic exam, Pap smear, and breast screening. Pelvic exam looks for abnormalities in the shape of the vagina, ovaries, bladder, fallopian tube and the rectum. The doctor usually presses on your stomach and inserts two lubricated gloved fingers into the vagina to feel the size, shape and position of the uterus. Pap smear is a screening used to detect cervical cancer, abnormal cells or any discharge that may lead to cancer. During the exam, the doctor also looks for sexually transmitted diseases like Chlamydia, gonorrhea and HPV. Breasts exams, also called

mammograms, x-ray the breasts for lumps or abnormal masses in the breasts or under arm. Breast x-rays can detect cancerous lumps at least two years before they are felt by a person. Mammogram screenings could be uncomfortable because of the coldness of the machine and the pressure that is applied to the breasts by the machine. However, the test only lasts 10 to 15 minutes. If you feel pain or discomfort during your exam, make sure to let the attending technician know. How often should pap smears and pelvic exams be done? Doctors recommend that beginning at age 21 or 3 years after becoming sexually active, all women must receive pap smears every 2 years until the age of 30. At age 30, if 3 consecutive tests are normal, screenings could be done every 3 years instead. However, if test results show abnormal cells and precancerous growths the doctor may ask you to repeat the test in a few weeks. You may also be asked to have screenings done more often. Try not to schedule your exam too close
to your menstrual cycle or this could cause false test results. As far as breasts exams, you should also do a self-breast exam on your own at the same time each month after your monthly period. This will help you become more familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel, and make it more likely for you to notice changes. Remember that the sooner you detect abnormal lumps, thickening or irregular discharge the better chance you will have for surviving cancer. After your exams, discuss with your doctor the results and what any abnormal findings may mean for you. Do your own research to gather information on the various tests and their results. Women’s health issues and information can be found at your health clinics, local libraries and on the internet, especially since there have been a push in recent years by companies like Avon, Estee Lauder and the makers of Dove Beauty Products to promote women’s health.

BEAUTY TIPS
Skin Care & Makeup Talk for 50-SOMETHINGS Text: Reneé Chester-Thompson.
“Makeup Should Be Easy To Carry, To Use & To Wear. And It’s Not About Covering Up- It’s About Enhancing What You’ve Got.” - Christy Turlington
M
aybe your biggest issue is finding the most suitable makeup formula or the right/ appropriate look for your age… LET ME HELP YOU BY HIGHLIGHTING SOME OF THE MOST COMMON ISSUES & HOW TO SOLVE THEM! For women over 50, hydration is the most important part of great skin care. If you’ve been practicing good skin care, the amount of fine lines and wrinkles may be minimized, however without a previous quality skin care regimen, women in their 50s run the risk of having droopy, saggy skin with sun spots. If you’ve spent the last thirty years stressing on career, children and relationships, then stop, because now it’s showing on your face. Relax your facial muscles, unclench your jaw, CHILL OUT- Your skin will reward you. Let’s say you might be experiencing postmenopausal skin-care issues, such as red veins and age spots (especially if you have fairer skin). You can combat this by using a vitamin C serum before your daily moisturizer. Menopause can also cause a multitude of other skin problems, including extreme dryness & acne. Don't even think of retiring from the skincare game. It's never too late to prevent sun 30 | GEM 72, 2016
damage or to stop the progression of damage you may already have. Cell turnover is slow; the most significant change you'll notice in your complexion is dryness and loss of elasticity. Expression lines no longer disappear after you stop smiling or squinting; pores are more visible, especially on the nose and cheeks. You're likely to have developed spider veins and hyperpigmentation (age spots), and precancerous spots from sun damage. I read an article a few weeks ago on “yahoo beauty” by Wendy E. Roberts, MD and she gave some recommendations to help combat the issue of what I’m talking about. “The Elos laser works well to zap spider veins, and the Fraxel laser reduces hyperpigmentation; precancerous spots can be treated with cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) or topical medication.” Aging and makeup As we age our skin changes. It isn't just the loss of elasticity and the odd little line, often it can become dull and we lose that youthful glow. This is why our makeup regime needs to change. If you are still using products you were using 20 or 30 years ago, now is a good time to revamp your selection. We all have favorites but perhaps they aren't the best choices for your skin type any longer.
There are products specifically designed for the more mature woman. That isn't to say they are of lesser quality, they have been formulated to bring out our best. Often these will have extra moisturizers to aid in the reduction of visible wrinkles. I’d suggest you look into the SIMPLE SKIN CARE LINE. Which shade of red lipstick There are so many red lipstick shades on the market it is difficult to just choose one. As a rule of thumb, if your skin is pale, try a blue/red. If your skin is olive then opt for an orange/ red. Of course you can try either. A blue/ red is more of a dramatic evening look whereas an orange/red will be a good choice if you are in fun mood. Some people think there is an age limit on wearing red lipstick. I am here to tell you this isn't true. Red lipstick is daring, provocative, and downright gorgeous. If you are a confident woman and have always worn red lipstick, there is no need to stop as you age. Perhaps a slight adjustment in the shade is all you need. Cosmetic manufactures are developing lines for women 50 years and older. Let's take a look at what is available on the market for mature women. Below are just a few of the ones I
have tried and my opinions on them.
for everyone!
MAC Matte Lipstick
Here are a few makeup tips for eyes: • B l e n d , b l e n d a n d b l e n d some more – notice how all professional makeup artists just blends the colors until it looks natural and just merge into one another. Adapt this technique.
MAC Matte Lipstick Russian Red This looks shockingly red if you aren't accustomed to seeing such a bright red lipstick in the tube. This is gorgeous and a head turner for all the right reasons. I prefer a matte look, I think as women age, a glossy look isn't always the best choice. Clients compliment my suggestion by telling me, they have never been brave enough to wear red and they love my choices for them. Maybelline Red Lipstick
• Start with a little, then add more – it’s easy to add more on but a hard task to take too much off. Go easy, step back, have a look and add only if you need or want to. • Choose colors that bring out your eyes naturally – you can always start with a hint of a different color (ie: mauve on brown eyes) and work on it. You don’t have to match the color of your eyes and you do not need to use neutral colors only. But choose wisely and experiment. Don’t experiment on the day you’re dressing up for. • Keep dark colors to the outer lids of your eyes – you want to open up your eyes, not make them look close set and small.
M a y b e l l i n e N e w Yo r k C o l o r Sensational Lip color - Red Revival 645. I call this my everyday lipstick for when I’m doing a client in her 50’s and agrees to try red. It’s one to always have stocked. Usual comments are like: “It makes me feel 'made up' and ready to face the world.” Although this tone of red lipstick gets you the compliments, it is less dramatic. Overall I’d say this is a good lipstick for all skin tones. -Just look at the different women who wear red lipstick. Madonna, Demi Moore, Dolly Parton, and The Queen of England are all fans of wearing red lipstick. Any race can successfully rock red lipstick. Just keep in mind that there’s a shade/tone of red that’s appropriate
shimmer will age you – Common mistake…Use a subtle touch and avoid the loud shimmers from the eighties. Yes ladies, we have moved on since then. • Try a softer colored eye liner – black is great but it can be too harsh. Try a dark sapphire blue, dark chocolate brown or a deep purple. It will soften your eyes but still add definition. • Don’t forget your brows – Fill in the sparse areas with a good natural color in either pencil form or powder and brush but avoid the thick dark angry looking brows. Don’t arch your eyebrows too much as it makes your eyes look droopy, instead follow the natural shape of your brows and make sure both sides are as even as possible. So my dear GOLDEN GIRLS… use these tips and get back in tuned with your fabulous side! -Ren
• S e t t h e base for your eyes like you would your face – if you use primer, make sure you put some on your lids too. The same goes for the foundation or tinted moisturizer you are using. Invest in a good concealer if you have dark circles or bags. • To o m u c h GEM 72, 2016 | 31
