ERPsim
INVITATIONAL COMPETITION
WELCOME TO ERP sim
Dear Friends:
Welcome to the 12th Annual ERPsim Invitational Competition! This event has grown from two classrooms in Grawn Hall to an event generally held in McGuirk Arena. After two years of holding virtual competitions because of the pandemic, we are excited to once again host an in-person event.
The ERPsim competition is a simulation that provides students the opportunity to run a business using a live enterprise resource planning system. It is a game of analytics and strategy where teams compete to make the best business decisions to maximize corporate valuation. Using SAP software and business acumen, student teams, assisted by their corporate mentors, work to execute a winning business strategy by integrating diverse functional responsibilities within the enterprise resource planning architecture. We have nearly 200 students actively participating in today’s event, along with a team of dedicated faculty and over 65 corporate executive mentors who have helped the teams practice and prepare for today’s competition.
CMU’s ERPsim Invitational Competition has become a premiere event for the college. The ERPsim aligns with the vision and mission of the college and university: it is a business-connected, experiential learning opportunity. The work leading up to, and including, today’s competition provides students with a transformational experience that promotes their success while strengthening corporate partnerships in Michigan and beyond. In addition, last night’s reception, in partnership with ASUG (America’s SAP Users’ Group), enabled students to network and explore career opportunities with companies in attendance.
Thank you for joining us today. If you are a mentor, sponsor, or corporate partner, we offer our sincere appreciation for helping us make this event a success. With pleasure and pride, we — the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Business Administration — welcome you to today’s live ERPsim competition.
Kind regards,
Chris Moberg Stephen L. Conclusion of 2024 ERPsim competition
WHAT IS ERP sim ?
ERPsim uses SAP software in a business simulation game. In the competition today, teams compete in the German cereal market selling to wholesale customers in big box stores, chain grocery stores, and convenience stores. Each team must forecast demand, calculate material shortages, procure material, and manufacture their products. Once inventory is manufactured, each team must then make marketing and pricing decisions. Each team must also manage an eight-million-dollar loan and consider investments such as setup time reduction and the addition of manufacturing capacity.
The successful teams will earn the highest corporate valuation, which reflects not only profit and sales, but also investments and debt management. Keys to the game are finding the best product mix, the optimal prices, and never stocking out. There will be forty teams playing in two separate flights today with teams on each of the two systems. Each game has four rounds of 20 days. Each day lasts 60 seconds. The top ten teams from each of the first flights will advance to the championship round. The remaining teams will play in the consolation round. Scholarships are awarded to the top five teams in the championship round and top three in the consolation round.
SAP NEXT-GEN UNIVERSITY ALLIANCE PROGRAM
As we look back across the year, the Central Michigan University SAP Next-Gen University Alliance Program (SAP UAP) has accomplished many things - some ongoing and some new. We are proud of our accomplishments and would like to share some of them with you. Below are the highlights of our program.
ERPsim 2024
The first ERPsim was held in Grawn Hall with 20 student teams in 2013. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a few years were virtual competitions. We went back to in-person event in 2023, and in 2024 continuing the priority at CMU of continuously providing experiential learning opportunities for our students and connecting them with employers. The simulation requires students to make real-time decisions regarding sales, pricing, product components, marketing investments, and production sequencing, all while making payments to pay off debts. These decisions are made using SAP reports and transactions. At the conclusion, approximately 15% of the students will earn a scholarship
HIGH SCHOOL ERPsim COMPETITION
Since 2015, CMU has hosted 13 High School ERPsim competitions. At least once per semester, CMU students who have previously competed in ERPsim mentor 40 high school students in the business simulation game. Similar to the Annual ERPsim Invitational Competition, the high school students take control of a fictional business using SAP. This year, we will begin holding high school events in various cities in Michigan with a special emphasis on women in technology.
SAP IN THE CLASSROOM
Since implementing ERPsim at CMU, the entire College of Business Administration has widely adopted the game. The Logistics Undergraduate Case Competition has implemented the simulation the past two years helping freshmen to seniors to learn more about business processes.
Implemented in first-year business courses, the simulation helps demonstrate the various disciplines within corporations. All business students regardless of their major also complete a junior-level business process course using SAP and ERPsim that focuses on accounting, procurement, manufacturing, and sales. This provides each student a true sense of what business integration looks like in the real world.
SAP CERTIFICATION ACADEMY
The SAP Certification Academy is an intensive two-week course offered by the college with a total of 80 hours of instruction and a challenging final SAP Certification exam. CMU’s SAP Next-Gen University Alliance Program has offered an SAP Certification to its undergraduate and graduate students since 2000. CMU is ranked number one in number of students participating in SAP certifications. The current SAP Certification Academy is the TS410, Integrated Business Processes in ERP. TS410 participants have represented all disciplines in the College of Business Administration and some disciplines in the College of Science and Engineering. Since 2000, over 1,675 students have participated in 75 SAP Certification Academies. This year the academy will be offered May 6, 2024.
THE DOW CHEMICAL SAP AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
The Dow Chemical SAP Award of Excellence has been sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company since 1998. For the past 47 semesters, three scholarships have been awarded to students each semester for outstanding achievement in an Information Systems course supported by SAP. Each student receives a $750 scholarship. To date, 151 students have received scholarships. The awards and scholarships are presented at a formal luncheon near the end of each semester. We thank Dow for their continued support.
CORPORATE CONNECTIONS
Each year the SAP Next-Gen University Alliance program and the SAP Student User Group work together to schedule various company visits. These visits are conducted to give our students the opportunity to see a variety of business processes/operations and to promote our program. The premise of the visits is to have the companies share with students their best practices and lessons learned from their implementations. It also provides an opportunity for CMU students to present to corporate partners the knowledge and skills they have acquired through their coursework and SAP Next-Gen projects. During the past year we hosted Eli Lilly, Infosys, Accenture, Microsoft, PWC, Dow, KPMG, ABeam Consulting, and Rocket Central/Rocket Mortgage came to campus to share information with the members of SAP SUG.
For more information on how your company can connect with students contact Stephen Tracy at tracy1sl@cmich.edu or Vishal Shah at shah3v@cmich.edu

SAP STUDENT USER GROUP
With over 120 members, CMU’s SAP Student User Group (SAP SUG) is one of the largest student organizations in the College of Business Administration. The SAP SUG aims to increase awareness of SAP courses, bring employment opportunities to campus, and provide professional development opportunities. The group is open to all undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Business Administration, especially those students engaged in classes supported by SAP. The SAP SUG participates in several opportunities; including ERPsim, High School ERPsim, Discover ERPsim, TS410 study sessions, and community volunteer and outreach events.
The group offers an abundant number of networking opportunities with employers attending weekly meetings. Recent corporate visits to campus by Eli Lilly, Infosys, Accenture, Microsoft, PWC, Dow, KPMG, which come to campus to share information with members of SAP SUG. In addition to networking opportunities, these companies provide students with an industry perspective, share how their companies utilize SAP, and hire our students for internships and full-time jobs.
CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS
CELONIS PARTNERSHIP ON CAMPUS
In 2021, CMU was designated as a Celonis Center of Academic Excellence. We continue to develop the partnership with the German process mining company that holds 60% of the global market share in the fast-growing discipline of process mining.
CMU is working to include process mining in the curriculum and conducting further research on the topic in conjunction with Celonis and their customers, many of them Fortune 500 firms. We aim to institutionalize the culture of data literacy, process transparency, and efficiency as the world deals with mountains of data. This initiative prepares our students for innovative jobs in the digital age.
Collaborating with Celonis, CMU held the Inaugural Process Mining Competition in the spring 2022 semester. Through the competition, students gained a better understanding of business processes and how to optimize them. Teams presented to corporate judges from Celonis, Dow, Infosys, and PwC for cash prizes and the chance to score a first-round interview with Celonis. The second Process Mining Competition was hosted in the fall 2023 semester.
BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH ASUG
ASUG represents the world’s largest network of SAP customers, partners and professionals. The ASUG networking event leveraged the power of partnership between Michigan SAP educational and corporate institutions to engage and grow the next generation of SAP Technology professionals. Students competing in the ERPsim Competition as well as those interested in accounting, supply chain, and information systems attended the networking event with ASUG members.
ASUG has partnered with College of Business Administration and hosted a networking event in 2023 prior to the ERPsim compeittion. ASUG and Central Michigan University is cotinuing this newly established tradiation in 2024.
SAP Next-Gen Lab Central Michigan University
In 2018, Central Michigan University’s SAP Next-Gen University Alliance Program was selected as one of the twelve SAP Next-Gen Chapters in North America. Additionally, CMU was selected to be an SAP Next-Gen Lab. As such, our program will collaborate with more than 500 educational institutions in the SAP Next-Gen program network in North America. The CMU Next-Gen organization (Lab and Chapter) aims to develop new and innovative curriculum, share best practices for educating graduates with SAP skills, and work with industries to create experiential learning opportunities, while inspiring industries to work with students and researchers to accelerate innovation and insights into the digital future.
We think these can be achieved through:
» Joining a community focused on innovation with purpose,
» Sharing thought leadership and collaborating with other thought leaders in academia and industry,
» Educating industry partners with skills for digital futures,
» Connecting students with companies recruiting Next-Generation leaders,
» and showcasing startups with corporations seeking to provide seed funding in disruptive innovation.
SAP Next-Gen has been instrumental in forging partnerships with industry. For example, CMU participated in the Innov8 conference hosted by Infosys’s SAP practice. Deepening our partnership with industry, we hosted an Innov8 Talent Day, where Infosys facilitated a design-thinking workshop with our students. Students who stood out during these workshops were selected for an opportunity to interview with Infosys.
The SAP Next-Gen Lab and Chapter space allows companies, partners, and universities to connect and co-innovate. Next-Gen provides an umbrella organization that creates synergies in various areas such as enterprise systems, process mining and analytics, robotic process automation, user experience, and design thinking. The CMU Next-Gen organization has elected to focus efforts toward three of the United Nations Sustainable goals.
Development Goals:
» Goal 4 – Quality Education,
» Goal 5 – Gender Equality, and
» Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
In 2022, SAP Next-Gen lab along with SAP and Dow Chemical Company (Dow), mentored Mary Selasky - an honors student at Central Michigan, on the GreenToken project to look at sustainability and tracking of products and materials.
The project examined the current state, the use of Block Chain in GreenToken, other key aspects of GreenToken, and the status of industry peers. Heather Czech and Colleen Raftery from SAP University Alliance worked with CMU to provide Mary access to GreenToken. Following the research project, Mary Selasky- presented the results to members of Dow’s leadership.
“My Honors Capstone Project has been one of my favorite projects at CMU and incredibly impactful for me. Through the project, I furthered developed my own skills such as becoming a better public speaker, better time management skills, and becoming more of a critical thinker. I would like to thank Dow, the SAP University Alliance, and GreenToken for the amazing opportunity to work with them.” – Mary Selasky
In 2023-2024, students will undertake various projects with Dow and other companies in emerging smart manufacturing and sustainability areas. To this end, we are engaged in a capstone project in conjunction with Dow in the Cybersecurity and analytics area. The project’s purpose is to mine the processes hidden in cybersecurity logs. Patterns found in data logs can inform cybersecurity policies, eventually helping organizations to enhance their cybersecurity apparatus.
We invite you to partner with our Next-Gen Chapter on a journey to impact the lives of our students and to collaborate on enterprise systems and analytics projects.
