Bad Commercials For A Great Product With today's technology, we can tape a TV program and fast-forward past the commercials to get to the program. With the sorry state of a lot of shows today, it might be smarter to fast forward past the program and just watch the commercials. A lot of them are more entertaining than the show they're part of! There's one I've seen recently that's a little strange, but I sure do remember it. It's advertising a particular pain reliever. They start their fairly annoying advertisement for the product and then suddenly interrupt it for this one aggravated person looking at the camera. They've got this great line, addressed to the company whose product is being advertised: "I hate your commercials...but I love your product!" I want to have A Word With You today about "Churches, Christians and Other Hang-ups." I have to be brutally honest with you about this Christian thing. A lot of people really don't like our commercials. The advertisements for Jesus are the people who claim to follow Him - like me; the churches and organizations that claim to operate in His name. And it may be that your experiences with Christians and Christianity have caused you to say, "I hate your commercials." There are many bright and attractive representatives of Jesus, but there are also a lot who don't represent Him very well. My appeal to you is this: Don't miss the product just because you don't like the "commercials." The issue is, in the Bible's words, "Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2 ). Jesus and the cross where He died for you. There's a great story in the Bible about Jesus that makes the point pretty well. Let me just allow the story speak for itself. It's in Mark 2 , beginning with verse 1, and it's our word for today from the Word of God. "When Jesus entered Capernaum, the people heard that He had come home. So many gathered that there was no room left, even outside the door, and He preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, 'Son,

your sins are forgiven'...He said to the paralytic...'Get up, take your mat and go home.' He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all." Here was a man whose only hope was Jesus, but there were all these people and obstacles between him and Jesus. They could have turned away, and this man would have never experienced the healing and the forgiving touch of Jesus. But they didn't let the hindrances stop them. He got to Jesus, no matter what it took, and he was healed. That can be you, if you'll look past the disappointing commercials - beyond Christians - and just look at Christ. He said, "Follow Me," so it's all about Jesus. He didn't say follow My followers or follow My religion. He said, "Follow Me." Don't let bad commercials make you miss the product - the only man who loved you enough to die for every sin you've ever committed. The only man who was willing and able to go through our hell so we could have heaven. The only man in history powerful enough to beat death by walking out of His grave under His own power. There's nothing not to love about this man. And this man is who you have to decide about. The hypocrites, the poor examples, the mistakes Christians make; none of those have a thing to do with where you'll spend eternity. It's all about Jesus...now and forever. And today this Jesus is knocking on the door of your heart, giving you an opportunity to find what you've been looking for your whole life. His "product" is eternal life. And only He can provide it, because He's the only One who could pay for it with His life. You could make this your Jesus-day by reaching out to Him in your heart and saying, "Jesus, I've missed you all these years, but I want You. I need You. You're my only hope of knowing God, of having my sins forgiven, of going to heaven when I die. Jesus, I'm Yours."

Working The Wait. was grateful for the answered prayer. But she was even more grateful to learn

When will I get my turn to hang a white dress in my closet?" I mumbled as I hung up my fourth bridesmaid dress last summer. A single 29-year-old, I'd watched friend after friend join the ranks of "Mrs."; I couldn't help but wonder, How much longer, God? As I contemplated my life's many delays, I realized I don't like waiting—and I'm not very good at it. But I wanted to grow during my waiting seasons rather than become bitter or lose faith. So I asked God to show me how he's working through these divine delays. Reminders of Redemption Sometimes, a wait seems to have no apparent reason. The delay is simply the product of a sin–ravaged world. My friend Tiffanie, after finishing grad school, spent months searching for a job. As leads failed to pan out into paychecks, she became discouraged.

God meets us through the waiting journey in ways beyond those originally asked or imagined. And he lovingly reminds us he can redeem any situation. The Timing of Trust Strangely, it's in the bleakest waiting moments that God's intervention manifests itself most clearly. Sometimes, those miracles are glamorous. We receive the perfect job, the physical healing, the necessary funds—and the wait is over. But other times, God does the miracle in us. Not long ago, as I was sitting down to dinner with my parents, they received a phone call from a hospital: "Your son's been in an accident … . Can't give details … . Come as soon as you can … ." In a trance, I stumbled to the car with my parents and sister. Those two hours on the way to the hospital were the longest of my life. I wish my immediate reaction had been peace, communion with God, or some other super–spiritual

My circumstances hadn't changed. Yet in the midst of waiting, I'd learned a new kind of trust. Thankfully, my brother walked out of the hospital a week later with merely a row of stitches above one eye and a scar over his left lung. I walked away with a fresh perspective on what it means to trust God without knowing the outcome. Waiting seasons are still painful. But deep within me, God is at work, assuring me he won't waste my heartaches. That even if he doesn't make my situations better, he'll somehow make me better through them. A Compassionate Presence Often a wait seems long when life doesn't unfold according to our agendas. But sometimes God has amazing reasons for a delay. I learned that great lesson about waiting from the story of Lazarus's resurrection (John 11). The flesh–and–blood God, who shed real tears, was with Mary and Martha. And when we feel alone in our wait, he promises the same: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). I'd still like a white dress to hang in my closet someday— preferably someday soon. But now as I wait, I'm careful not merely to mark time, so preoccupied with what's next that I miss out on what's now. I'm striving to wait well. And part of waiting well, I've learned, is being open to God's lessons about redemption, trust, compassion, and his higher purposes along the way. Until I see God face–to–face, I'll always wait for something. Or rather, Someone. And as I long for earthly things, I'll allow them to point me to the deepest longing in my soul. He's the One I await.

Strangely, it's in the bleakest waiting moments that God's intervention manifests itself most clearly.

Yet, much to my admiration, Tiffanie refused to anesthetize the waiting ache. For three months, she fasted from TV because she believed God had "given me the time (whether I asked for it or not) to reflect on what I have and where I'm headed."

Throughout those agonizing months, God showed up in ways more profound than a job offer. She was looking for a way to support herself; God taught her a new level of dependence on him. She was desperately waiting for a potential employer's phone call; instead, God spoke into her soul's quiet places. She was searching for a genie– god to provide instantly for her needs; God blew her away by revealing he's much better and bigger than she'd ever dreamed. Eventually, Tiffanie landed a job, and she

phenomenon. But the feeling in my gut was more like numbness and nausea. My mind churned with questions: Is he going to survive? Will he walk again? Waiting for details unknown and out of my control was terrifying. Somewhere between my parents' home and the hospital, however, a remarkable thing happened. Ever so subtly in that night's uncertainty, the Holy Spirit crept into my personal waiting room. I was still terrified. But underneath that layer of fear, I found myself standing on an infinitely solid truth, one no car accident could steal. I didn't know what we'd find when we arrived at the hospital. But I knew whatever it was, God would still be God. 7

Families That Pray Together Stay Together Prayer is the most potent force known to humanity. Because we have been made partakers in Jesus’ victory over sin and death (1 John 4:4), we have the authority as sons and daughters of God to pray for others, pushing back the darkness of sin and oppression. In prayer, we have a weapon that has “divine power to destroy strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).

That kind of weaponry—the power of prayer— is something God invites us to use as we seek not only personal transformation but the transformation of the world as well. An intercessor is one who takes up a “burden” that goes far beyond his or her own needs and intentions. And those who take up the call to intercession come to learn in a deeper way that the sufferings of the present time cannot compare to the joy that will come as God’s purposes unfold. They learn to trust in the Lord, because they have experienced in prayer how infinitely compassionate God is. Intercessors participate in God’s magnificent plan to raise humanity to share in divine life. This insight moves them to engage in a spiritual battle against the forces that seek to destroy God’s plans. The Letter of James tells us that “The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects” (James 5:16), and there is no one more righteous than Jesus—the most powerful intercessor whoever walked the earth. Martha, the sister of Lazarus, rightly declared, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you” (John 11:21-22).by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). One of the most powerful ways we can pray as intercessors is together with others. Consider joining the intercessory prayer team. This elite group of pray warriors rely on the Spirit to assist them in prayer.

So ask the Holy Spirit to teach you how to pray in union with the mind of God. Take to heart St. Paul’s words, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes . . . for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:2627). And above all, ask God to give you confidence that he hears your prayers and longs to answer the deep needs of those around you.

The prayer of a righteous man has great power.

Jesus promised: “If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). One of the most powerful ways we can pray as intercessors is together with others. All of the many tangibles that you could get your family, you will find that nothing can replace or compare to praying for and with them.

Ten Suggestions for a Better Marriage Dan Flournoy It is always appropriate to engage in self-examination from time to time (1 Cor. 11:28). Likewise, it is a healthy practice to examine one’s marriage. We hope these suggestions will serve as encouragement to improve your marriage. 1.

Never consider divorce as an option. God’s plan for marriage is one man and one woman for life (Gen. 2:18-24; Mat. 19:1-9). Divorce and remarriage for any cause other than fornication is sinful. Studies show that the majority of those who divorce and remarry do not find happiness. Instead, most second marriages also end in divorce.

2. Learn to forgive and forget. During a lifetime together, marriage partners will naturally make mistakes and offend each other. No human being is perfect. God’s Word calls upon us to forgive: “…Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye” (Col. 3:13). Continually bringing up past mistakes of one’s spouse will not solve present problems. 3. Do not be hypercritical. “The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression” (Pro. 19:11). It is easy to get into the faultfinding habit. However, love “taketh not account of evil” (1 Cor. 13:5, ASV). Rather than keeping track of supposed wrongs done by one’s mate, one should look for the good things he or she has done and express appreciation appropriately. The results can be surprising. 4. Learn to communicate. One of the most important components in any relationship is communication. Also, the most important component of communication is listening. Scripture teaches: “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). Do not interrupt your spouse with a response. Remember: “He that answered a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame to him” (Pro. 18:13). Rather than trying to think of how you will respond when one’s spouse is finished talking, one should try to understand his or her point of view. 5. Keep outsiders outside. Do not accept or give affection outside of your marriage. Often when there is trouble between a husband and wife, one or both of them will seek someone else to substitute for a perceived deficiency in the marriage. The following exercise illustrates the intimacy and exclusiveness that must be maintained in a marriage: On a piece of paper write your name and your spouse’s name in the center. Draw a circle around your names, and then draw a larger circle around the first circle. The space between the circles represents your family and friends. The space outside the circle represents others whom you may know but who are not a part of the immediate family. The circle containing you and your spouse is the marriage relationship. No other person is to be allowed in this circle. Only God has a right to be there along with you and your spouse. Keep outsiders outside! 1010

Clarissa Blunt Community Synergy Mother Of The Year Have you had an opportunity to meet the “Mother of the Year”? Let me introduce you to Mrs. Clarissa Blunt, the former First Lady of the First Baptist Church on 318 Hall Street, Franklin, Virginia. Mrs. Blunt was born on April 13, in Bogalusa, Louisiana as Clarissa Peters to Raiford and Daisy Peters. Bogalusa is a small town similar to Franklin, in more ways than one, it too was a Paper Mill town. Mrs. Blunt is the fourth of six children. She has two brother still living today. Mrs. Blunt’s fondest memories includes playing with her brothers. She enjoyed following them around invited and uninvited. She grew up under the watchful eyes of the community that assisted in raising her along with her parents. “It takes a village to raise a child.” The community was very supportive of all of the children. They would publish the academic accomplishments and other successful areas of their lives in the local newspaper. She vividly remembers when neighbors would give them quarters for their successes, she was not allowed to accept the money without the permission of her parents.

leave her mother. Mrs. Blunt was very close to her mother and remembers the wonderful times spent in her presence. Mrs. Blunt’s mother, Mrs. Daisy Peters, ran a successful Beauty Salon in the back of their home. There Mrs. Blunt watched the children of her mother’s clients. She grew to adore and become very close to those children. She talked about the love and compassion that she came to know for children through this experience. From there she attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a Masters of Elementary Education. Mrs. Blunt has served young people for many years as an Educator. Her career started in East Baton Rouge Parish School, then she moved to Caroline County Public Schools, and finally to Franklin City Public Schools where she is currently a kindergarten teacher at S. P. Morton Elementary School.

As she reflected on her early years, she spoke about how books were handed down through her family. The collection of books were kept in her home and the neighborhood children would gather at her house to read books and complete homework assignments every evening. After homework was completed the children would rush outside to a friendly game of softball. Mrs. Blunt attended school during the time of segregation. She attended Central Memorial Elementary and Central Memorial High schools. She recalls how difficult it was to leave home to attend college because she did not want to 1111

Mrs. Blunt shared that her mother was a very quiet woman who never raised her voiced even when situations warranted otherwise. She learned from her mother to be a giving person. Her mother gave often without any regard for herself. Mrs. Blunt is married to Rev. Henry Blunt, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church, Franklin. To this union, they had two children - Dr. Steven Blunt, 36, Pastor of the First Baptist Church Mahan, Suffolk, Virginia and Sonya Denise Blunt- Meades, 31, a student. They also have two grandchildren—Steven and his wife Brandi have a daughter, Nakari Branae Blunt, 5 years old, who resides in Suffolk, Virginia and Sonya has a son, Richard Jamari Meades, 8 who resides in Franklin, Virginia.

One On One With Mrs. Clarissa Blunt Q: How has being a mother changed your life? A: It has enriched my life. Having children took my mind off of myself and caused me to devote that energy toward my children and their well being. Q: Were you the disciplinarian? A: “Sure I was, my husband was away most of the time and I could not “Wait ‘til daddy gets home” to handle things. When things needed to be corrected it was necessary to deal with them immediately. As a mother I played many roles. I think all women play may roles and even though the roles have changed over time they continue to balance family, career and life all at one time. Q: Are there any things that you would have done differently as a mother? A: Basically, I would have done things the same way with one little exception. I would have left my children in the care of others to get away more frequently. I recall the first time that I left Steven and Sonya, they were teenagers. I also remember how I cried when I took my children to college and left them, it was so difficult because I was and am still today very close to them.

Q: What advice would you give to a new mother? A: There are several pieces of advise first, recognize that each child is a gift from God; second, teach your child the love of Jesus; third, grow and learn with your children; fourth, love, respect, and listen to your child; and fifth, seek support I remember even though my mother was ill she came when I gave birth to Steven because I was too sick and had to remain in the hospital for an additional two to three weeks. She was so devoted and loving and once again she demonstrated her love for me without any regard for her own needs.

A: Through daily meditation and prayer, different passages of scripture reveal insight to face life’s challenges, struggles, and triumphs with words of encouragement, hope, redemption, grace, comfort, and salvation. These exercises are opportunities for my spiritual growth and walk with Jesus.

We must continue to look at the plight of our precious little ones...

Q: How do you feel about being selected as the “Mother of Year” for First Baptist Church? A: I am very honored to have been selected and am very humbled by this entire experience. This is simply flattering. Talking with Sonya, Mrs. Blunt’s daughter. Sonya was asked to share some things about her childhood and the time spent growing up at home with her mother. Sonya reflected that she see her mother in herself. I see her morals and values that she instilled in me at a young age and I value all that she has taught me. “It really means so much to have these lessons taught to help me raise my son and know that he has the best possible upbringing because of who I am today.

We made them together. And today I share this tradition with my son Richard. Q: What is one thing that your mom taught you and you will always remember it? A: “Always remember who you are and Whose you are!” Q: If you could do anything for your mother, what would it be? A: Smiling—I would give my mother a Home Makeover exactly the way she would like to have it. Because she has given me so much, I would give her the world. The world is really so small in comparison to all she has done for me.

Mrs. Blunt has touched countless children’s lives. She has mothered, nurtured and cared for more than her own. This is demonstrated through her many years of service in education and through her dedication to the community. Many children have benefited by having their lives touched by Mrs. Blunt as she has etched her love into all of their hearts. We are grateful that Rev. Blunt, Steven, and Sonya have managed to share a part of her with us all. Mrs. Blunt is a shinning star that has brighten the lives of all she has come in contact with and that is exactly what a mother is and does. “HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY”

Q: What would you like to say to your mother? A: I would tell her that I love you. I would also tell her she is my “HERO.” I can see how she has impacted the family and the community and I know just how special she is. She is awesome.

and what to look for in this life. You will never be forgotten. Your grandson, Dawes L. Orr, Jr.

It’s Your Turn. An excerpt from the book, “Walk In It: Advancing Beyond Average. By Rev. Jennell Riddick John 5:4 “For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.” Due to the tremendous power, potential, and purpose that you possess you don’t have time to waste. You have to tell yourself this time will be different. This time I will stay the course. This time I will move forward and stop treading water. Your destiny is waiting for you. While your destiny awaits, the world also waits for you to operate in your assignment. I remember how stirred I was years ago when my Pastor preached Romans 8:19 “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” Wow, it was then that I really began to understand that what God had placed in me was bigger than me. Not only does God want me to operate in His fullness, but the world is waiting to experience what God has placed in me. I share the same concept with you. Your family, friends, neighbors, church

members, and even the world, is waiting for your gift to come forth. You are the answer to someone’s prayer. God trusts you to do what he has purposed for

your life, and the rest of the world is relying on you. Perhaps it was procrastination that brought your new declaration to a screeching halt. Perhaps it was fear of the unkown, the fear of what was ahead. Were you concerned that you would not be able to maintain the new level the Lord was taking you to? You have been here before and now it’s time to move. If the truth be told, you were so close, but for some reason you stopped or turned back. You have to walk in it not allowing anything to make you miss your turn. Don’t you get tired of having the same resolutions every year? “This year I’m going to lose weight. This year I’m going to write the book, start the business, go back to school, join the ministry, etc.” Well, in case you needed a personal invitation, here is your invitation. Do it. Put the doughnuts and ice cream down. Start writing. 20

Start researching for your business. Start visiting schools. Go talk to the leader of the ministry. It’s your season to walk in it. Ten years from now you don’t want to be in this same place. The choice and the power lie within you. You can watch others, or you can walk. You can complain, or you can walk. You can continue to live at the surface, when you know that every part of your spirit is yearning to go deeper, or you can experience new dimensions of success. You’ve been here before. Do you realize that you’ll never be fulfilled in this place of incompleteness? In this place, you are more susceptible to the enemy because he sees how close you are, and now he is fighting you with everything that he has. Trust God for increase. Trust Him not to leave you out there all alone. Trust that He has given you everything that you need to go the distance. You have been here before it’s time to move forward Tap into what God is doing from the start. You don’t have to create the plan. For those who like to maintain some type of control thinking that if they make the plan that they can at least have some say over what hap pens in it, wrong. “In his heart a man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). Your best bet is to tap into what God is already doing. He created the plan. The clay doesn’t tell the potter what it should be and how it should be molded and shaped. Likewise, trust God. Surrender your plans and desires. Give God an unconditional, unwavering yes. This time has to be different. You have to be assured in heart and mind that you can and will do it. What will make this time different for you? The power that you sense? The urgency and importance of your call? It is imperative that it be done. I remember blowing bubbles with one of my nieces on a summer day. I love my nieces and nephews! There we were, blowing bubbles and my niece was totally ecstatic. As every bubble came out of my soapy wand, she would exuberantly yell, “Ooo, bubbles!” She was loving it! She couldn’t wait for the next bubble to be blown. Then I noticed a shift. Her excitement remained, but it was now directed more towards the wand than the bubbles.

She innocently said, “Aunt Jennell, it looks fun when you do it, but can I do it now?” She was ready to take her turn. She was ready to stop watching the bubbles be blown and blow them for herself. I hope you are ready to blow because it’s your turn. Greatness lies ahead. This is an excerpt from Rev. Jennell W. Riddick’s first book. Continued from page 23… 6. Learn to trust. A marriage cannot survive without trust. Whenever trust is broken, it is difficult to repair. When trust is betrayed, the sense of loyalty is shattered. As in other crisis situations, when there is a loss of trust, one may go through several emotional stages including anger, grief, hostility, resentment, guilt, and depression. The offended spouse must work through these emotions in a Biblical fashion. The one who has broken the trust must work at rebuilding the trust. Sometimes the counsel of a faithful Gospel preacher or Christian therapist is needed to deal with these issues (Prov. 19:20). Trust can be restored, but it will take a great deal of work by both parties. 7. Do not compare your mate to others. Every person possesses unique strengths and weaknesses. Each married person is married to an individual who is different from himself or herself in many ways. Likely, these differences are in areas where each is deficient. Marriage has a way of making us complete through the one we married. Therefore, each marriage is unique and can glorify God in its own way. Scripture teaches that it is unwise to compare ourselves with others (2 Cor. 10:12). 8. Give positive reinforcement. A key to any relationship is expressing appreciation. Take every opportunity to give praise to your mate. “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad” (Prov. 12:25). A word of praise from a loved one furnishes compelling motivation to do even more. A poem by Mary Oler expresses it well: “You may not sing in opera or even write a book; But if you like the food you eat, start braggin’ on the cook!” 9. Pray for your marriage (Phi. 4:6). Ask God to help you make the changes in your life that will help your be a better mate. Request God’s blessings on your spouse in every way. Thank God for qualities in your mate which have enriched your life. Ask to be forgiven for any unloving or selfish behavior in your life. Marriage is God’s gift to you. What you make of your marriage is your gift to God. Remember: “God cannot answer a prayer that is not offered.” 10. Center your marriage on the Bible (Psa. 119:105). Set aside a few minutes each day to read the Bible together and pray. If you have not been accustomed to this, determine to start today. You might begin with the Sermon on the Mount (Mat. 5-7). Bring the family together and read a few verses each evening. Ask each family member to comment on what the passage teaches. You might sing a hymn or two and close with a prayer. Make the Bible a part of your daily conversations. Look for ways to apply God’s Word to daily situation. Most important, make the Bible a part of your life in daily Christian living.
