Prosecutor accused of fording police reports in Elliott case By Melissa Frick Senior Reporter news@cm-life.com

In excerpts of an unreleased internal investigation by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, officials concluded that former Assistant Attorney General Brian Kolodziej forged police reports in a Central Michigan University sexual assault case, submitting “erroneous police reports” to the Isabella County court and the Michigan Department of Corrections. Kolodziej, who resigned from the Attorney General’s office in September, admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with one of the victims in the sexual assault case. His resignation launched an internal investigation by Attorney General Dana Nessel into Kolodziej’s unethical behavior. Although the investigation report has not been made available by the Attorney General’s office, its conclusions were sent on Nov. 26 to defense attorney Joe Barberi, who represented the defendant in the sexual assault case. Barberi said he received copies of 21 interviews conducted as part of

Nessel’s investigation. Barberi released excerpts from the investigation on Friday, Feb. 7, following the sentencing of his client, Ian Elliott, in Isabella County Trial Court. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker, who is investigating Kolodziej’s handling of the sexual assault case, reportedly gave Barberi permission to release his summary of the investigation. In portions released by Barberi, officials concluded that Kolodziej had conducted interviews with witnesses without police supervision and forged unauthorized police reports, which he withheld from Elliott’s defense attorneys during the judicial process. “Kolodziej interviewed victims and witnesses without a law enforcement officer present, and in some situations, there was never a police interview conducted,” the report’s conclusion reads. “The investigation found that Kolodziej submitted erroneous police reports to the defense counsel, the court, and the Michigan Department of Corrections ... The investigation found that the reports were also withheld from the defense when they

would have been vital in providing an adequate defense and ensuring fair judicial process.” The report states that when Kolodziej was caught providing the “erroneous reports,” he blamed the matter on Karen Fairley, an investigator with the Michigan Attorney General who was ultimately transferred out of the division, according to the report. Barberi included in his report two exhibits from Nessel’s investigation:

A copy of an unauthorized police report submitted by Kolodziej, which he claimed had been prepared by Fairley, and an actual police report authored and signed by Fairley. Fairley’s authorized police report contained exculpatory evidence which Kolodziej deleted in the report he submitted. Barberi’s report also named at least three supervisors who were aware of Kolodziej’s wrongdoing as early as January 2019 but did not

take action. One of those was Chief of Staff Laura Moody, who allegedly was made aware of Kolodziej’s relationship with a victim in the sexual assault case at a meeting Jan. 16, 2019. Also present at the meeting were Rebekah Snyder, a Victim Advocate for the Attorney General’s Office, as well as appellate chief John Pallas and Donna Pendergast of the Criminal Division. “The investigation again found that all this behavior was also known by Chief of Staff Laura Moody, who took no action,” the report reads. According to reporting by The Detroit News, Moody reportedly resigned in July and currently works for the office of Detroit U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider, a former Michigan chief deputy attorney general. Pallas was demoted as a result of the Attorney General’s internal investigation of Kolodziej’s prosecutorial misconduct, said Kelly Rossman-McKinney, communications director for the Attorney General’s Office. She was not able to comment further due to ongoing Michigan State Police investigations.

Texas Tech yet to comment on QB Duffey amid 2019 Title IX case Quarterback remains in transfer portal seeking 2020 team By Evan Petzold Managing Editor news@cm-life.com

2020 2021

Jett Duffey was in the middle of a 2019 Title IX case while he was standing on the sidelines at Jones AT&T Stadium, home of Texas Tech’s football team. He was with the Red Raiders on Sept. 14 for an away game against Arizona and, four days later, completed mediation with Texas Tech’s Title IX office in a case where a fellow student, Chloe O’Rear, said the quarterback raped her. Following mediation on Sept. 18, the football team traveled to Oklahoma for a Sept. 28 matchup against the Sooners. Duffey took over in relief of third-stringer Jackson Tyner, who did not perform well in his start against Oklahoma. Duffey became the team’s No. 1 quarterback for the remainder of the 2019 season. At 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, Duffey was on the active roster for the entirety of his Title IX case, the second of his college tenure. There was not

an announced suspension or any comment made from Texas Tech’s athletic department or administration. That remains the case today. The only move Texas Tech made was recently deleting all of Duffey’s player profiles from its website. The player profile for former quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, a Super Bowl champion for the Kansas City Chiefs, still exists. In pursuit of a new program as a graduate transfer, Duffey was denied admission from Tulane and Central Michigan. Duffey’s transfer to the Chippewas was report-

ed Jan. 18, and it seemed he’d join second-year coach Jim McElwain’s squad as a lock for the starting quarterback job. However, that all changed after CMU became aware of O’Rear’s Title IX complaint against Duffey from 2019, and the university decided to deny his application. “Sometimes the worst offenders are mid-level programs that are just trying to get to that next level,” said Colorado-based attorney John Clune, who has represented women in sexual assault cases against high-profile athletes, including Kobe Bryant, Heisman Trophy-winning quar-

terback Jameis Winston and others. “If they can just get that one player, or keep that one player on the field, they feel like that’s going to take them to the next level.” Since the Texas Tech sexual assault case ended in mediation, neither Duffey or O’Rear were assigned “blame or responsibility.” Besides going through Title IX, O’Rear also filed a report with the local police, but the district attorney said charges wouldn’t be pressed due to insufficient evidence. The quarterback was “not found responsible for any misconduct,” according to the document from Texas Tech’s Office for Student Rights and Resolution provided by Duffey’s attorney, Chuck Lanehart. This was because the case ended in mediation and was not fully investigated. “He deserves a chance to continue his college playing career,” Lanehart said. “It is true he was accused of Title IX allegations, and he has always maintained his innocence. Texas Tech authorities found him not responsible for the 2019 allegation. He has never faced criminal charges or been arrested in regard to these allegations.” Questions of how much the athletic department knew of the 2019 sexual assault case have been pointed at athletic director Kirby Hocutt and head coach Matt Wells. No one from Texas Tech has made a public statement about Duffey’s transfer problems.

Courtney Pederson | Staff Reporter Members of the CMU Board of Trustees meet during committee meetings Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Five takeaways from Board of Trustees committee meetings

Staff Reports

news@cm-life.com

The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees met Wednesday to have discussions about upcoming items in the Thursday formal meeting. During five committee meetings Feb. 12, trustees heard from vice presidents and faculty about strategic planning, building renovations and transfer students. During the formal meeting at 8:45 a.m. Feb. 13 in the President’s Conference Room, trustees will vote to approve room and board rates for the 2020-21 academic year and the Carey Hall renovation project. The Enterprise Risk Ad Hoc Committee Aside from a formal update by Vice President Finance and Administrative Services Barrie Wilkes, the meeting featured a presentation on collective bargaining, labor-employee relations, employee recruitment and retention by Senior Vice Provost Ray Christie. The presentation reported CMU has 5,126 student employees that contribute over 1.3 million hours over the past year. The hiring process for new faculty will also undergo reformation. The university will use a new program, HireRight, to conduct background checks on new employees. In addition, another faculty orientation will be implemented. Total worker’s compensation cost for the past year was $55.6 thousand. Academic and Student Affairs Schutten gave an update on the progress of her working group, one of five which Davies commissioned last year, in solidifying objectives to help CMU grow this decade. Her group has also forecasted a demographic shift toward older students with experience in their careers and a need for CMU to become more flexible and adaptable. Executive director of admissions Lee Furbeck discussed changes to the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s code of ethics and how they could impact CMU’s strategy. Previously, CMU was not supposed to target students committed to other schools, invite

students enrolled at other schools, offer early incentives such as better scholarships or personal parking spaces. Those rules have been lifted. Finance and Facilities The committee approved a hike in room and board rates to be voted on in tomorrow’s formal meeting. Rates for the residence halls, Kewadin Village and Northwest Apartments will rise by 2 percent, and graduate housing will rise by 5 percent. There was a presentation on a proposed remodeling of Carey Hall. The project will be completed over the summer and is not to exceed $4.8 million in cost. An additional meal plan will be available in the 2020-2021 academic year. The plan includes unlimited meals and $300 Flex dollars and will cost $2,704 per semester. Trustees-Faculty Liaison Committee Trustees heard from teacher education and professional development faculty member Jen Weible about the Doctorate of Education Technology program. She said the online program has students across the globe from fields like government, medicine and business. Since 2015, students and faculty in the program have produced 13 peer-reviewed journal articles, five book chapters and 16 conference presentations. The committee had a discussion with faculty about transfer students. Academic Senate Chair Brad Swanson explained barriers that exist for students who want to transfer to CMU. He said students who transfer from community colleges can often transfer their credits, however, their classes might not fulfill general education requirements put in place. Trustees-Student Liaison Committee Student and trustees members discussed the Fall Wellness Break, residential hall student art initiative, Meal Swipe Bank and other student lead proposals. Four student representatives from the Financial Wellness Collaborative delivered a presentation about the importance of helping students learn financial skills and knowledge. The group mentioned that Financial Wellness Central opened on Monday, Feb. 10 and is located in the Bovee University Center 116.

ith Valentine’s Day approaching, many individuals are looking for heartfelt gifts for their significant others. Clinton Township senior Sydney Reed has decided to help by selling custom made boxes through her business, Custom Creations. The two different boxes created are infinity and explosion boxes both sold for $20 each. Both boxes are filled with a couple’s pictures and can incorporate personalized items such as quotes or movie references. This is Custom Creations’ first year, and Reed creates all of these boxes by herself. While sitting on her living room floor, Reed spends about two hours on each box making sure all of the components line up properly. Although Reed has just started selling these boxes, she has been receiving requests to do more occasions than just Valentine’s Day. She has received requests for anniversaries and Mother’s Day, and soon Reed hopes to continue to expand this business she has created. With the start up of Custom Creations, Reed has been able to utilize her creativity to not only make a profit, but to “spread the love with the talent” she has. Central Michigan Life sat down with Reed to learn more about her experience with Custom Creations. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––

What was the reason behind the creation of Custom Creations? (There are) two main reasons. The first reason was that I am going to my grad school interviews over the course of the next month and it’s pretty expensive to fly out of state... So I was thinking about all of the talents I have. I think about other people and what they do like some of my friends do makeup (or) braid hair, but I’m creative. I did this (idea) for a past partner, and he really liked it; a lot of my friends said it was pretty cool so I thought maybe I should try it. Also, going along with that, there are a lot of friends I have and people that I know in general that have partners but they don’t have the time to make them a gift because we have class, and all of that stuff. So I was thinking since ... I have a lot of free time on my hands then I would just do it and that’s kind of how the idea came about.

Q&A

How did you learn to make these boxes? I got those rolls of paper you might see in the SIC or that your Resident Assistant’s put up for their boards. So I bought one of those on Amazon and it was pretty cheap. I also have card stock paper that I got from JoAnn’s. It’s a lot of measuring out exact measurements so when the boxes fold back together they go back how they’re supposed to. I’ve made boxes before and the measurements were off and then it just looked all out of whack. So it’s just a lot of time, measuring and creativity.

What would you say is your favorite part about it all? When I take the lid off (of the box) and start to unravel it so people can see while I’m recording a video, that’s one of my favorite parts. You can just see all of their pictures together and how much they love each other. Another favorite part is when I send the video to the customer and they see it and their reactions are always so great. It makes me feel good to know that I’m able to at least help their relationship or provide something for them during the Valentine’s Day season. I personally don’t have a partner so I could sit here and be bitter or I could just share the love with the rest of campus or the rest of the world.

What is a challenge you have faced with this business?

Sydney Reed

The Clinton Township senior decided to create her own business, Custom Creations, in time for Valentine’s Day. Makayla Coffee ■ Staff Reporter

I posted it and it kind of blew up more than I thought it was going to. A lot of my friends on Twitter were retweeting it and commenting, so I got a lot of orders, but even more inquiries just about the boxes in general. So I was getting a little overwhelmed like I don’t know if I’ll have time to make all of these boxes. I had some people that reached out to me from New York and Arizona, like peope were reaching out from all over. That was surprising because I wasn’t thinking anyone was going to reach out beyond CMU. I was just getting concerned I wasn’t going to be able to do all of the boxes in the time with 20-30 people reaching out to me. But, of course not everyone followed through and wanted a box.

Do you have hopes for your business in the future? I’m hoping that, at least for myself, that it will turn into a nice little side hustle. Now that I am getting older I am understanding the importance of not only having one job, but having multiple sources of income just in case something does happen. So, I am hoping it gets a little bit bigger especially with going to grad school and still being in school and how expensive that is. I am hoping that I will be able to use this to help finance that. In addition to that, I have seen how happy it makes people when they see the box of them and their partner. So, I just want to continue to put smiles on people’s faces.

COMMUNICATION IS CONSENT The most effective way of obtaining informed consent is by asking verbally, according to Dr. Zhana Vrangalova, a NYC-based sex researcher and educator. Silence never means “yes.”

onsent and sexual assault continue to be heavily discussed in the media as more survivors speak out. Men and women ages 18-24 have the highest risk for sexual violence, according to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. The risk increases if the individual is a college student. A majority of the population at Central Michigan University are both 18-24 and students, putting them at greater risk for sexual violence. “(College aged individuals) are more likely to be assaulted than any other population and that increases two folds on campus or in a campus community,” Mary Martinez, interim executive director of the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity and Title IX coordinator, said. “Sexual assault is reported more than those not in that age range and not on a college campus.” Consent remains as important as ever on and off the campus community.

Defining Consent Consent can have many different specific definitions depending on the context, organization and governing laws. For instance, Oxford defines consent as “permission for something to happen or agreement to do something,” whereas according to RAINN “consent is an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity.” Oxford, a common dictionary company for all ages, gives the general definition but RAINN, a organization that deals with sexual violence, put the definition in context to their site and mission. Both definitions include the key word “agreement”. To Martinez, communication is the only word that defines consent. “Communication is really the foundation of what consent is,” Martinez said. “It doesn’t come in one shape or form, it can look different, as long as it’s clear.” In addition to communication, Rebecca Hayes, sociology,

anthropology and social work faculty member, believes consent is respect. “The pushback from students is always that (asking for consent) will make it less sexy,” Hayes said. “My quote is always, ‘If you can’t talk about sex, you shouldn’t be having it.’” Consent needs to be an affirmative response and before the activity begins, continuing throughout. “Any type of sexual activity, and that can take many forms, you need to have consent,” Brooke Oliver-Hempenstall, director of sexual aggression services, said. “Regardless of if it’s someone you just met, someone you just started dating, a long term relationship since junior high or you’ve been married for 40 years, consent is crucial.”

According to Martinez, if it’s a question to whether someone’s body language is saying yes or no, the answer is no. “If you can’t read someone’s body language, ask them,” Martinez said. “It’s okay if you can’t read body language or pick up on cues, that’s why you can have that communication and ask.” Body language for consent is simple if they are unconscious or heavily intoxicated. “When alcohol is involved, an individual who is incapacitated cannot give consent,” Martinez said. “If they are so intoxicated that they are not able to make that decision it is against the law and university policy.”

Martinez mentioned that in order to get out of a one-onone situation with an individual, it’s okay to lie and do what is necessary to get out of the scenario. “Be aware of what’s going on around you and your friends and if there are ways avoid someone getting in a situation where it’s a one-on-one encounter,” Martinez said. “Some people feel more encouraged or empowered in numbers, so there are a lot of techniques that way.” In many ways, females use friendship to avoid sexual assault or to confide in.

Consent’s Role in Dating Culture

If You or Someone You Love is a Survivor

Consent is Communication

No matter how the dating culture has changed or will change, consent will always be important according to Oliver-Hempenstall. With dating apps and virtual communication as key aspects of relationships, the dating culture is more fast paced than before. “I’m not in the dating culture, let me just preface by saying that, but my perception and observation is that it’s a fast-paced culture,” Martinez said. “That it is literally at your fingertips, swipe left, swipe right, multiple dating apps.” In addition to sexual assault and harassment that occurs in person, it happens through the internet as well with unwanted pornographic pictures, also knowN as unsolicited dick pics. “Regardless if it’s an in person activity or something that is not but is still engaging in sexual behavior then consent is the crucial element,” Oliver-Hempenstall said. The classic mother answer of “listen to your gut” happens to be the perfect way to avoid possible unsafe scenarios and ensure consent. “Sometimes if you are in a situation you need to trust your gut and listen to that little voice inside of you say it,” Martinez said. “If it doesn’t feel right, try to get out of the situation.”

Sexual Aggressions Peer Advocates is a CMU on campus resource which offers free 24/7 confidential services via online chat or by calling (989) 774-2255. The CMU Counseling Center offers free confidential counseling to any current student. Appointments can be made by calling (989) 774-3381. Recovery, Independence, Safety and Empowerment provides emergency shelter, counseling, safety planning and legal advocacy. R.I.S.E has a 24 hour crisis line, (844) 349-6177 for counseling, emergency shelter and safety planning. For legal advocacy, call the main office (989) 773-0078. McLaren Hospital offers additional confidential services as well and can be reached at (989)-775-1600. Office of Civil Right and Institutional Equity, located in the Bovee University Center 306, offers nonconfidential services and has forms to report sexual misconduct (989)-774-3253. “If someone discloses to you they were sexually assaulted, it’s okay not to know what to say,” Martinez said. “I often tell students, it’s okay that you don’t know all the answers, the most well trained psychologist or counselor might not know what to say in every situation and that’s okay.”

Positive consent can be shown through communication as sexual activities progress with phrases like “Is this okay?”, explicit agreement to specific actions and physical cues, according to RAINN. “You need a verbal yes or body language, a person nodding yes,” Hayes said. “You need an affirmative, assertive consent. Absence of consent is a no, silence is a no.” The key to confirmed consent is clear, continuous communication, Martinez said. “It’s difficult, even for people who have been in relationships for decades to communicate clearly, but that really is what it’s about making sure you’re engaged in the process,” Martinez said. “It’s not a one time ‘Do you consent?’ question.” Martinez discussed the importance of having consent throughout the entirety of the process checking in with your partner, making sure they’re okay with it. “If they’re not okay with it, if they’re not liking what you’re doing, if they say something or their body tightens up and reacts be attuned to that and say ‘is it okay if I do this instead?” Martinez said.

Man arrested after using fake $100 bill to buy pizza By Melissa Frick Senior Reporter

CRIME LOG

news@cm-life.com

The following incidents were among those handled by the Central Michigan University Police Department from Feb. 4-10. Feb. 4 Police responded to a non-aggravated assault complaint at 10 a.m. after two men engaged in a verbal argument near Pearce Hall. A 23-year-old man was crossing the street near Pearce when he reportedly was almost hit by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old man, said Lt. Mike Sienkiewicz of CMUPD. The male pedestrian reportedly made an obscene gesture to the driver, which led to a confrontation between the two men. When police arrived, the two men did not wish to press charges. A 25-year-old man was arrested after a stolen license plate was found in his car during a traffic stop at 1:25 p.m. on East Campus Drive. The man was pulled over for having an expired license plate and did not produce valid insurance. Before the vehicle was towed, officers discovered a license plate inside the vehicle that was

reported stolen from Detroit. The man was charged with operating a vehicle without insurance and concealing stolen property. An 18-year-old woman reported to CMUPD at 7:21 p.m. that she thought she was being followed by a man near Trout Hall. Police made contact with the man, 20, and determined the incident was just a coincidence. Feb. 6 A 23-year-old man was cited for no proof of insurance after a traffic stop at 8:45 a.m. near Bellows and Fancher streets. The man was pulled over and reportedly told police that his insurance was expired, and the vehicle was towed from the scene. Later, the man came to CMUPD after he reportedly realized his insurance was actually paid, and he was given a citation by CMU police. A female employee from Wheeler Hall reported to university police that she had been involved in a phishing email scam and purchased $1,000 of gift cards. The woman reported that she received an

FEB. 4 THROUGH FEB. 10 email from someone pretending to be her boss, which requested for her to purchase gift cards and send photos of the cards. The woman complied with the request, but later realized that the email had been a scam. The incident remains under investigation. Feb. 7 A 23-year-old man reported to CMUPD that the rear windshield of his car was found shattered at 12:42 p.m. in Lot 40, 1950 West Campus Dr. Police have not determined if the windshield was broken on purpose or if it was shattered due to cold temperatures. Feb. 8 Staff members at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 S. Washington St., reported a missing sign to CMU police. The incident remains under investigation. A 19-year-old man was arrested and charged with defrauding an innkeeper after he reportedly used a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase pizza. The manager of

Cottage Inn Pizza, 1639 E. Broomfield St., reported to CMUPD that a customer had paid for a pizza with a counterfeit bill. The pizza was reportedly delivered to Emmons Hall at 5:38 a.m. Police made contact with the suspect and confiscated 10 fake $100 bills that reportedly said “for motion picture use only.” Sienkiewicz said the man is not a CMU student. A 21-year-old woman reported to CMUPD that her wallet had been stolen and a number of unauthorized transactions were made on her credit card throughout Mount Pleasant. The incident remains under investigation. Feb. 9 Police were dispatched to Wheeler Hall at 9:18 p.m. on the complaint of a marijuana odor coming from a room. Two residents, a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, were contacted and turned over various drug paraphernalia to the police. No charges were issued, and CMUPD turned the case over to the Office of Student Conduct.

Pedestrian lighting vote delayed at Feb. 10 city meeting By Andrew Mullin Senior Reporter news@cm-life.com

Mount Pleasant City Commission’s ranks were thinned at their Feb. 10 meeting, but there were still enough commissioners present to get some business done. Despite missing three members, city manager Nancy Ridley said the commission could still hold a meeting because it’s required to have at least four commissioners present to make votes. Due to illnesses, commissioners Lori Gillis, Kristin LaLonde and Petro Tolas were all absent from this meeting. The four commissioners present postponed a vote scheduled for the meeting, and had a work session regarding the mayor electoral process. The commission unanimously postponed a vote on a resolution to refurbish six pedestrian lights along Michigan Street and add six more. It was also postponed last week when Tolas made a recommendation to change it, suggesting the city not replace the six lights already there. Ridley recommended the commission to postpone it again because the project needs five votes in order to approve it. The commissioners also had a work session regarding the election of the city’s mayor. Frimpomaa Ampaw, director of the Central Michigan University Center for Applied Research, gave a presentation on a study her office

conducted on mayoral election methods from cities similar to Mount Pleasant. She said at least one official was interviewed from 15 cities, and the study found that of these cities, 11 elected their mayors through popular votes, and the other four did it through council votes. Only two of the cities had recently changed their mayoral election methods, according to the officials they interviewed. Ampaw also spoke about advantages and disadvantages to council elections and popular vote elections. With council elections, she said the main advantages were that commissioners got to choose their own chair and the mayor’s position was more clearly defined. But, she also said it could create more apathy towards the commission’s work and create adversarial relationships between commissioners. With popular vote elections, Ampaw said the city population is more invested in the mayor, the mayor becomes more accountable and voter turnout rises. But, it also creates a misunderstanding of what the mayor does and may become more about popularity. Ridley said the mayoral election in Mount Pleasant can be changed through a ballot item approved by city commission. The ballot item would first be introduced by the city’s charter committee. of Women Voters, with many local members in attendance. He said, “The League has sponsored legislation and fought in the courts to protect and strengthen voting rights and access, and for free and fair elections, civil rights, children, community health and education.” • The commission unanimously approved a grant application for a project with the Wastewater Treatment Plant. • The commission unanimously passed a resolution to amend a contract between the city and Consumers Energy. This contract

concerns installing new LED lights at the intersections of Pickard and Mission streets, and High and Mission streets. Ridley said the lighting would increase vehicular and pedestrian safety. • The commission approved a bid for replacement of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge in Island Park that connects Island Park and Pickens Field. A new non-motorized, half-mile pathway will also be constructed. The cost of the project is not to exceed $414,500.

SGA passes parking lot reform, study space resolutions By Justin Cooper Associate Editor news@cm-life.com

Justin Cooper | Associate Editor Mount Clemens senior Matthew King delivers his speech, “Beyond Heroes,” to Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association at their Feb. 10 meeting.

Resolutions in support of parking lot reform and the establishment of a “green study space” where Barnes Hall formerly stood made it through both the House and Senate of Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association at its Feb. 10 meeting. The House passed the parking lot reform last week after CMU PD answered questions from both chambers, but the Senate opted to delay their vote by a week. The Senate had passed the Barnes green space resolution in November. Now that both resolutions have passed both chambers, they’re official, and SGA can go to work advocating their messages. Co-authored by Sen. Max Ranger and former House representative Josh Wright, the parking lot reform resolution proposes five patient-parking only spots near the clinic in Foust Hall, parking at North Art Studio past 2 a.m. and allowing student employees to park in the lot nearest their place of work. Though the police seemed unconvinced the resolution’s tweaks could be implemented, and some senators remained skeptical of its narrow focus, it passed in the Senate by a vote of 6 to 4, with one abstention. Vice President Lyndi Rose stressed the power of SGA legislation as “vessels of change,” which, while they may not be fully realized as written, can be influential tools in negotiations with the administration. The resolution in support of the Barnes green study space, co-au-

thored by Sens. Brandon McDonald and Kalli Walz in partnership with Facilities Management, lists student-focused amenities SGA would like to see at the former site of Barnes Hall. These include group hammock stations, solar-powered picnic and charging tables, sustainable vegetation and showcases of student artwork. That doesn’t mean all those things will ultimately be there, House leader Anna Whitwam said before the vote. It means SGA supports the area’s development being beneficial to students.

Other business Mount Clemens senior Matthew King opened the Feb. 10 meeting with a spoken word performance called “Beyond Heroes,” which he also performed at this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day brunch. His speech won this year’s oratorical contest and a standing ovation from SGA. It covers King’s journey toward social conscience and why a collective effort, rather than individual heroes, is required to overcome institutional racism. Rose will present two years of data collected on her Menstrual Hygiene Product Initiative, which places free tampons and menstrual pads in several campus bathrooms, to the Trustees-Student Liaison Committee of the Board of Trustees on Wednesday. She hopes the data will persuade the administration to support the program after she graduates this year. Elections will be held later this semester for SGA’s President, Vice President, treasurer and senator positions. Candidates for President and Vice President will need petitions with 500 student signatures, treasurer candidates will need 250 and senators will need 100.

MID MICHIGAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE COACH ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT BY PLAYER Police are investigating a Mid Michigan Community College softball coach who reportedly sexually assaulted a player. Crime logs from the Mount Pleasant Police Department say the assault occurred on the night of Jan. 29. According to a report by 9&10 News, the woman said the coach grabbed AUTUME BALCOME her by the neck and forcefully kissed her multiple times. Earlier that evening, she had helped the coach look for a deer he had hit with his car. She said the

coach grabbed her and kissed her while dropping her off afterward. The police report was sent over to the Isabella County Prosecutor, according to MPPD Public Information Officer Autume Balcome. There will be no arrests or charges until the Isabella County Prosecutor has reviewed the case. Central Michigan Life reached out to the Office of Strategic Communications at the college, which said the coach was immediately put on paid leave after the accusation was made. President Davies will show you how Feb. 27 in FEW lobby

By Noah Wulbrecht Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

All Central Michigan University students will have an opportunity to learn how to tie neckties from the president of CMU himself from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb 27 in the Fabiano/Emmons/Woldt halls lobby. The event is coordinated by First Impressions, a store in the Bovee University Center where students can receive one set of professional attire per semester, for free. Properly tying neckties is an important skill when preparing for interviews or in any professional setting. Ties will be provided by First Impressions. “Many of the students who come [to First Impressions] do not know

how to tie the ties they are leaving with,” said Meredith Wiles, student director of First Impressions. Either on the way back from dinner, the market or simply stopping by, any student can attend to learn from President Davies. “I like the idea of many students learning something simple from the President, especially something so personal and useful,” Wiles said. “I could imagine students going out into the world and being able to tell others ‘the president of my university taught me how to tie ties.’” For additional information on “Tying Ties with the President,” contact Wiles at wiles1mj@cmich. edu or First Impressions faculty director, Erica O’Toole at palen1ea@ cmich.edu.

TOWN HALL AIMS TO INITIATE CHANGE THROUGH OPEN DIALOGUE AND EDUCATION

Isaac Ritchey | Photo Editor President Bob Davies smiles during a Martin Luther King Day ceremony march Jan. 20 in downtown Mount Pleasant.

By equally confronting the past and assembling for the future, a civil rights and racism town hall meeting aims to nurture a culture of open dialogue, empowerment and education throughout campus. From 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20 in the Bovee University Center’s auditorium, the “Central Michigan University Civil Rights and Racism Town Hall” hopes to cultivate a conversation regarding civil wellness on campus. By incorporating the pursuits and priorities of several student organizations and guest speakers, the event aspires to anatomize problems and initiate solutions. Combining the realms of political ambition, feminism and contemporary advocacy, the event has numerous hosts including: the Organization of Women Leaders, DREAM Central, Central Michigan for Bernie Sanders, Student Advocates for Prison Reform and the Incarcerated, NextGen America at Central and the

New America Project (NAP). Although it is a project involving multiple parties, the town hall is the brain child of NAP, a first-year organization devoted to elevating Democratic Socialist issues and policies throughout campus. Flushing senior and the organization’s founder, Emily Jones, saw the need to create such an event by wanting to leave issues from the past unforgotten and intentions for the future carried through. “We believe students should have a space to learn about civil rights and racism, express their experiences in a safe space and get involved and take action on these issues,” Jones said. She said her organization will be recording the event in its entirety and providing it to President Robert Davies, as he will be traveling during the event. -Sam Shriber, Staff Reporter

DILEO BREAKS CAREER 3-POINT SHOOTING RECORD IN LOSS TO BUFFALO FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS MICHIGAN

SATURDAY FEB.15

WAYSIDE WA YSIDE CENTRAL, CENTRAL, MT. PLEASANT, PLEASANT, MI

David DiLeo has passed Josh Kozinski and now holds the Central Michigan career 3-point record . DiLeo broke the record in Central Michigan’s game at Buffalo on Friday. DiLeo needed just one triple to break the record. He hit the shot from right wing to break Kozinski’s record. Kozinski held the record since Jan. 30, 2018. In that night’s contest against Northern Illinois, Kozinski hit DAVID DILEO eight 3-pointers. DiLeo was Kozinski’s teammate for two years and shared the moment with him.

“Hopefully I’ll have David chasing me,” Kozinski said following the game. DiLeo and Kozinski shared a close bond throughout their time together at Central Michigan, one that has withstood Kozinski’s move to Fort Worth, Texas following the end of his playing career. “Playing with him, it was awesome,” Kozinski said. “Great guy, great teammate, he’s one of my best friends. Being able to develop that friendship together was truly a blessing and how grateful I am that it’s Dave DiLeo beating my record, it’s a blessing.” DiLeo, a senior, has played in 124 games in his career. The native of Iowa City, Iowa has started 92 of those games, all consecutively. -Christian Booher, Staff Reporter

MAC BASKETBALL UPDATE: WOMEN REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE PLAY With just over half the Mid-American Conference season to play, both basketball teams at Central Michigan are in prime spots for the postseason. The Chippewa women’s basketball team remains undefeated in the conference after two wins over conference foes this week. The men’s team split the week with a 10-point win over Bowling Green followed by a tightly contested five-point loss to Buffalo on Friday. Women’s basketball The Chippewas are now 11-0 in MAC play after a pair of wins over Northern Illinois and Miami (Ohio). The West Division leaders hold a threegame lead over Ohio, the current East Division leader, for the top spot in the conference. After losing on Feb. 1 to the Chippewas, the Bobcats rallied off two-straight victories. Sitting at 8-3 in the MAC, the Bobcats are now 2.5 games ahead of Kent State (5-5) for the East Division race. Outside of Ohio and Kent State, no other team in the East Division has a .500 or better record.

The Chippewas lead the West by 3.5 games over Ball State. The Cardinals have won four of their last five games. Both teams are vying for the top spot and will face off in Muncie, Indiana on Feb. 29. CMU has a week off before facing Bowling Green in McGuirk Arena on Saturday to open a three-game homestand. Men’s basketball CMU is now one game back of Northern Illinois (8-3) in the West Division. In the East Division, Bowling Green (9-2) holds a 1.5 game lead over Akron (7-3). Both divisions have a log jam near the top, with fourth-place Buffalo only three games back in the East. The West Division has fewer teams involved but third place Ball State sits only 1.5 games back of the Huskies. The Chippewas are set to face Akron on Friday following a game against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, both in McGuirk Arena. -Andrew Loveland, Staff Reporter

FOOTBALL SEARCHES FOR QUARTERBACK Chippewas to enter second straight season without clear starter at QB By Christian Booher Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

When Central Michigan takes the field for the start of spring practices on Feb. 15, it will do so without a set starting quarterback for the second straight season. However, at this time last year, the options were much more clear. Graduate transfer quarterback Quinten Dormady was becoming acclimated to the program. It didn’t take him long to assert himself as the starting quarterback, a spot he would hold for the entirety of the season except for an injury that cost him four weeks. This time around, second-year coach Jim McElwain is left with uncertainty at the position. Though it appeared the Chippewas had their answer at the position in Texas Tech transfer Jett Duffey, he was denied admission to Central Michigan as a previously unknown 2019 Title IX investigation was made known to the administration. Here are three options for Central Michigan at the quarterback position heading into the 2020 season: Graduate transfer market Central Michigan plucked both Dormady and Duffey from the graduate transfer market, meaning McElwain isn’t opposed to securing a quarterback with immediate eligibility. Though many of the quarterbacks in the transfer portal have already signed or committed elsewhere, two intriguing options remain. Joe Critchlow, formerly a quarterback at Brigham Young University, remains on the market and has two years of eligibility remaining. Critchlow, who is “interested” in playing for the Chippewas, has connections to defensive coordinator Robb Akey. The junior from BYU took two years off following his high school graduation to serve as a church missionary in Montreal, Canada. In his career, Critchlow has thrown three touchdowns and four interceptions in eight career games. He’s compiled 715 yards through the air and has a career passer rating of 111.5. Critchlow has the in-game experience and will likely jump at the opportunity to compete for a starting job. Another option still available through the transfer market with immediate eligibility is former Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey. Ramsey is a more polished option than Critchlow, having played in 31 games throughout three seasons with the Hoosiers. Ramsey has thrown for over 6,000 yards in his career to go with 42 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He would be a high-profile player

in McElwain and offensive coordinator Charlie Frye’s offense. Given his skill set and the overall body of work, he will likely draw interest from higher-profile schools. Senior David Moore When Moore was on the field for the Chippewas last season, he demonstrated an ability to sling the football around with the best. In his final start of the season, Moore threw for 279 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 42-16 victory over Eastern Michigan. In four games as a starter, Moore crossed over 300 passing yards twice and looked to be a potential star moving forward. He was then hit with a 365-day suspension for testing positive for an NCAA banned substance. Moore appealed the suspension and will await a verdict from the NCAA, which should become public by the time the regular season rolls around. Should Moore’s suspension be dropped, the Chippewas have their answer at quarterback. If the appeal is denied and suspension is upheld, Moore will be ineligible to compete until Oct. 7. The 2020 season is his final year of eligibility. Evaluate the remainder of the QB room Should Central Michigan elect against bringing in a transfer and see Moore’s appeal denied, the responsibility falls on a relatively inexperienced quarterback room for the Sept. 5 season opener against San Jose State. McElwain would be forced to choose between redshirt sophomores George Pearson and John Keller, redshirt freshmen Daniel Richardson and true freshman Tyler Pape to take the reins of the offense for the opener. Of the four, Pearson is the only one to complete more than just a single pass at the collegiate level. Richardson was sought out and promptly brought in by McElwain, hinting that the Miami native may be McElwain’s quarterback of the future. In his first season with the Chippewas, Richardson went 1 of 4 for 1-yard passing in three appearances. Keller, as a JUCO transfer, and Pape will be in their first season with the Chippewas. If this is the route the Chippewas are forced to take, the coaching staff will be tasked with speeding up the development of the young quarterbacks. Following the opener against San Jose State, the Chippewas travel to Big Ten opponents Nebraska and Northwestern in back to back weeks, a daunting task for any young quarterback. How McElwain handles the quarterback situation will likely play a big role in not only the outcome of the 2020 season but possibly the future of the program.

SP E A K UP, SPE SPEE A K OUT SP Students can create change if they unite their voice. Look at what happened last semester.

S

enior Alexandra Garay began a Change.org petition three months ago titled, “CMU students feeding CMU students – creating a meal swipe donation program!” Nearly 6,000 people have signed the petition since its creation, calling for Central Michigan University to make a change. Others provided social media posts and support. The effectiveness of her effort was immediate. One week after Garay began calling for students to rally together, President Bob Davies announced in his Nov. 27 Presidential Perspectives blog the university would be moving toward a meal “swipe bank” and $1 meal option at the Down Under Food Court. The programs were launched Jan. 6 and have been in place for the spring semester. Students came together, expressed their frustrations and forced programs into action. They didn’t wait for the administration to make a change. As a matter of fact, the students were the change. That’s the power of coming together. Executive Director of Auxiliary Services Cal Seelye agreed. The students, not the administration, made the real difference in pushing to fight food insecurity. “Did the student feedback on Twitter and the poll that went out impact our timeline or expedite things? Absolutely,” Seelye said.

EDITORIAL The Central Michigan Student Labor Union, following Garay’s petition, organized a protest outside of the Real Food on Campus (RFoC) dining hall. That was another aspect of forcing change that the administration took into notice. Many of the stories we begin writing and investigating came from comments on Twitter and Facebook. For the meal swipes scenario, we wouldn’t have found out about the situation if it wasn’t for students sharing their opinions. Within the next week, we’ll be publishing a story about complaints regarding our cafeteria food that stems from Aramark, the company that runs the dining halls on campus. Again, we wouldn’t be able to write stories like these if students don’t speak up. If it’s a post on social media, anonymous tip to our office or, if you’re up for it, a face-to-face conversation, we take every interaction with fellow students on campus seriously. We are here to represent you, even if you don’t always agree with us, and communication is important to the way we work as a whole. Come together, share your opinions and help make our university a better place for everyone.

OPINION

Katie Hixson Staff Reporter

Learning to say “no” to things that overextend you is an important yet very difficult part of self-care. It is not selfish to say “no” to something at that very moment. A simple “I can’t do that now, how about I get back to you later” is always okay. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty teapot. If you cannot be there for someone 100 percent, just say no. More often than not, they’ll understand. Another important part of self care is setting boundaries for yourself. Don’t stay up until 2 a.m. studying for your linear algebra midterm, trust me, it’s doing more harm than good at that point. Don’t work yourself to death. Set a deadline for yourself to be relaxing and in bed

by a certain time every night. If something is not done by your deadline, it can wait until the morning. This will also help you be more productive during the day and to prioritize your tasks With a deadline, cut yourself off. That means don’t check email, don’t go on BlackBoard, put the phone on do not disturb for the rest of the night and focus on decompressing after a long day No two people have the same self-care routine. What works for one person might not work exactly the same for the other. You need to figure out what works for you. To do this, try new things. Try journaling, taking naps, going to the gym, crying it out into your pillow, try anything until you find something that helps you relax and feel better about yourself. How do you realize when your teapot is empty? When you start to feel exhausted and numb. Saying things like “I can’t deal with this right now” or “I don’t care, it doesn’t matter” are warning signs that you are burnt out and just need to take some time to refill your teapot. Self care is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Take time to love and take care of yourself, so you can love and be there for others.

Dating apps are a necessary evil for matchmaking in 2020 Growing up I always wanted a fairy tale romance, from the meet cute to the happily ever after. I took pieces from every romance novel I read, romcom I watched and story I heard to make my dream fairytale. I imagined meeting a guy at a bookstore or library. We would both grab for the same book on the bookshelf and our hands would touch. In reality, I’ll be lucky if a guy and myself swipe the same way on one another. The only ways to meet a significant other is by already knowing one another someway and swiping through Bumble or Tinder. During my freshman year, I got so lonely that I downloaded Tinder. In the back of my head the memories of the cautionary tales from “Catfish: The TV Show” haunted me and caused me to delete it two days later. Eventually, loneliness overpowered my fears and I redownloaded Tinder and also got Bumble. Societal norms have made any sort of flirting or showing interest to strangers creepy, because it is creepy. There is no flirting with the stranger in the grocery store or the cute boy from math class. There is no real way to know who is in a relationship, who wants a relationship, who wants something casual or what someones’ sexual orientation is just by seeing

EDITORIAL STAFF

Practicing self care is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Self-care is the practice of taking action in preserving or improving one’s own well-being and overall happiness. When talking about self-care, I like to use the story of a teapot. You are a nice and caring person with a big teapot full of tea, and you like to share with your friends. Say one day your best friend is going through a rough breakup at school, so you pour her a cup of tea from your teapot to make her feel better. She takes the tea and thanks you for the drink. Then say that evening your coworker approaches you at work and tells you they are being harassed by your superior. You pour her a cup of tea while she talks to you about it to help calm her. Then say that night your sister comes into your room and she tells you that she’s failing two of her classes, so you pour her a cup of tea to cheer her up. You look down at your teapot and realize that it is completely empty. Now you have to take a break and boil some water, steep the tea, and let it cool before you can give anyone else tea, because you cannot pour from an empty teapot. The same concept applies to self-care. In order to take care of others, you need to take care of yourself first.

them. Dating apps make so many of these issues nonexistent. Some have features where one can specify what type of relationship they want and can even put on filters for the features of a potential partner. There are definitely still creeps on dating apps, but it’s one of the only ways to meet someone in this day and age. Dating apps are a necessary evil when trying to meet someone in the current dating world. In a Pew Research study on dating apps released on Feb. 6, 48 percent of adults aged 18-29 have used a dating app. I personally don’t want to use dating apps, I actually don’t know of anyone who wants to, but it’s the way of the current dating culture. A study by ABODO surveyed 3,500 college students who use dating apps. Accord-

ing to the survey, only 4% of the students prefer using dating apps to meet potential dates and 79% prefer to meet in the old fashioned ways, such as mutual interests and friends. Niche dating apps and sites have been created for people who want to meet people with similar interests and lifestyles, such as FarmersOnly, Christian Mingle and Trump Singles. I, and evidently a lot of others, prefer to rely on the biography section of profiles to look for similar interests than using niche dating services. I find that I personally don’t take dating services seriously enough to use niche sites. Although finding a significant other through dating apps is essentially the end goal, I use them for the entertainment aspect more than anything. The ABODO study shows that a majority of the Tinder and Bumble users use the apps for entertainment. With so many people using dating apps, regardless of reasoning, it’s practically a necessary course of action for single college students who want a relationship. Maybe one day my prince charming and I will both swipe right, but until then I’ll be swiping through a copious amount of emotionally unavailable guys.
