flaire FOR WOMEN

Here it is June already and summer is kicking into gear. It also means the flaire turns into the “Man” issue this month in honor of Father’s Day. Yes, it’s a woman’s magazine, but as many of you are aware we wouldn’t be here without men in our lives. This issue recognizes there are men in the community who read it and I appreciate their support. This months cover story is on someone many of you may know, if not let me introduce you to Al Womack Jr. He’s the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Alton. First and foremost he’s a father and a man with heart. During my time as a reporter I’ve met many men along the way who are known to give back to the community. There are those who do so for their own benefit and then there are men like Al. Yes, he may have the top job at the non-profit organization that benefits children, but he gives his time selflessly. He knows children need a safe place to go after school and they need mentoring. His job doesn’t stop there, he volunteers in the community and he cares. Yes, that can be a rare thing among many who give their time. This community is filled with organizations who are doing things for others. For this issue I also interviewed Country artist John Michael Montgomery who is headlining the “Feed the Need” concert at the Alton Amphitheater this month to benefit Senior Services Plus, Inc. I’ve been a fan of John’s music for years - his first hit came out while I was in the U.S. Army - and a few years ago I went to his unplugged show at Argosy. John puts on a great show. I’m looking forward to watching him again - I swear. If you’ve never been to see a show at the amphitheater then you should. I don’t think there is a better venue around and a vantage point so close to the stage. Also, I want to wish my dad a happy Father’s Day. He has done a lot for me through the years and I love him dearly and like many of you who read flaire, he does too and doesn’t miss an article. So be sure to read everything in this month’s issue.

Al Womack is a community leader and volunteer, however he considers his No. 1 job and greatest responsibility to be a father.

Man serves many roles in the community, but his No. 1 responsibility is being a father Al Womack Jr. is considered a superstar to thousands of boys and girls in the Alton and Godfrey area, but for two he’s considered something bigger and better — he’s “dad.” “The most important job I have is being a dad,” Al said. Most people know Al in his role as the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Alton. A position he’s held for nearly 17 years. However, the one many may not know about is his role as a parent to two teenagers, Aaron, 19, and Aareiona, 14. Upon graduating Alton High School in 1989, Al attended Central State University where he earned a bachelor in science in 1994 in business administration. While at CSU, Al served as an offensive lineman and co-captain of two NAIA Division 1 football national championship teams. Al said after college he never intended to move back. “I was living in the Dayton area and looking for a job in banking and just couldn’t find anything,” he said. “I had the education, but didn’t have any experience.” He said since he couldn’t find anything he moved back to Alton and landed a job working various support staff jobs within the Alton School District. In 1994, Al also started working for the Boys and Girls Club part time. “I was working 12 hours a week,” he said. “It’s something I

instilled in both his children is respect. “I’ve taught them to show respect for the community, respect for others and above all respect for themselves,” he said. He said it’s the same thing he makes sure is taught to youth at the Boys and Girls Club. There are a variety of programs that include educational, character and leadership, health and life skills, sports, fitness and recreation as well as the arts. “Our mission is to enable young people to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring individuals,” he said. “It’s learning to admire other as well as their own abilities, qualities and achievements. It’s respect.” Visit www.bgcalton.org to find out more on the Boys and Girls Club and how you can get involved. Besides being a father and an executive director, the 43-yearold has also served in other roles — coach and volunteer. He worked as an assistant football coach at Alton High School for 17 years and continues to volunteer his time as a board member of the Alton Educational Foundation, along with serving on other various boards throughout the Riverbend. For his charitable work Al has been honored with the Elijah P. Lovejoy Human Rights Award, 2007; the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, 2002; and Illinois Association of Club Women Inc. (Southern District) Mentoring Award, 2001. Al believes in standing up for the community. The 6-foot-4-inch tall man said he’s proud to give back to the town where he grew up. “I couldn’t think of anything else I would rather be doing,” he said. “Giving back and helping kids, especially my own, is the most rewarding feeling. Knowing you are making a difference in their lives.” n

really enjoyed too.” In 1997, Al was hired as a camp director and he quickly worked his way up to program director, then executive director. “Working with kids and mentoring them is rewarding,” Al said. “It can be tough at times and there are setbacks, but even as parents we know it can be rough.” Al said his journey as a parent hasn’t always been an easy one. Years after being married to his college sweetheart the two divorced and their family split. “My son was 12 and he came to live with me and my daughter stayed with her mother,” he said. Al said regardless of the situation, a priority to him was making sure he stayed involved in his children’s’ lives. “At the time my son came to live with me he was at an age where it was important that he had me as a role model,” he said. His children and their mother were living in Dayton and Al knew if his son stayed there he would struggle. “It was an important time for him,” he said. “I knew I needed to be there to help mold him into a responsible young man.” Womack said it was important for him to be around, not just as a father, but to break stereotype that media has given about the absent black father. “Being a parent is a job,” he said. “It’s your No. 1 job once you make the decision to have children. There are many who don’t know how to take on that responsibility and their children suffer from their lack of responsibility.” Al’s son has followed in his footsteps and is playing football at college now. His daughter continues to live in Dayton with her mother, but Al gets her any opportunity he can. “I do a lot with my kids,” he said. “My son and I share a love of sports and I enjoy taking my daughter shopping.” He said the one thing he has

A Kentucky native is set to show off his “country thang” and “kick it up” for a nonprofit organization’s benefit concert that will raise money to assist the elderly. John Michael Montgomery will take the stage for the 5th annual “Feed the Need” concert, which benefits Senior Services Plus, Inc. Meals on Wheels program on June 7 at Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater. Montgomery, whose hits include “I Swear,” “I Love the Way You Love Me,” “Sold,” “Be My Baby Tonight,” and “Letters From Home,” recently spoke to flaire about the upcoming show, his music and his love for family and community. Montgomery said he looking forward to returning to Alton to play and helping those in need. He played his first gig in Alton at Argosy in November 2011. “I enjoy doing charity concerts because I know the people are there to enjoy the show, but they are there to help a good cause” he said. Montgomery, who’s sold 18 million albums, knows how hard it can be for people who are in need of assistance or struggling to make it. “I grew up moving from trailer park to trailer park,” he said. “My mom and dad didn’t have great jobs, but they worked hard. They played in a band and we lived like gypsies and were always moving around.” Montgomery was born in Danville, Ky. said they lived in central Kenutcky and the one thing that was consistent in his life was music. He played in a band with his brother Eddie Montgomery, who is half of the country duo Montgomery

He said when he released his first album “Life’s a Dance” he didn’t expect the song with the same title to his first single. “I didn’t expect it to be as big of a hit as it was,” he said. His second album “Kickin’ It Up”

Many of Montgomery’s hits came out in the 1990s, however one of the most touching of his tunes, “Letters for Home,” came out in 2004. “It’s a story about a boy who goes into the military,” he said. “In the end it tells how proud his father is of him.” Montgomery said the song is in honor of all those who have served in the military and a tribute to his own family that served in Korea and Vietnam. “I’m a huge military supporter and for me that song means so much,” he said. He said his own musical influences are not only country artists, but genres as well. He said the Lionel Richie is one of his all-time favorites. “I grew up listening to him as a kid and he can sing, especially ballads,” he said. Montgomery is known for his country power ballads, but he is a fan of late

produced his first No. 1 single “I Swear.” The power ballad, written by Gary Baker and Frank J. Myers, was not only mad poplular by Montgomery, but reached success by the pop group, All-4-One. “I just recently re-recorded the song with All-4-One in celebration of the songs 20th anniversary this year,” Montgomery said. He said music has always been an outlet for the Montgomery family. His 15-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter also play. “I’ve told them I would support them anyway I could in helping break into the music business, but they have to go to college first,” he said. He said he feels that by going away to school it will provide them with more opportunities. “The music business can be rough,” he said.

Sklar Brothers by COREY STULCE

What Are We Talking About? For the last two decades, brothers Jason and Randy Sklar have been thrilling comedy fans with their unique rat-a-tat style onstage. The identical twins are St. Louis natives, and while they have spent a lot of time on both coasts, the sports fanatics still bleed Cardinal red. They know that the area is home to some of the most-knowledgeable baseball fans in the nation. The Sklar Brothers have a new special streaming exclusively on Netflix, “What Are We Talking About?”

8 June 2014

flaire FOR WOMEN

Q

Corey Stulce: How often you get an opportunity to go back to St. Louis?

Randy Sklar: Our mom is still there. Our dad passed away a few years ago. We try to go back because we have kids and I want my kids to know and like St. Louis, and we have a lot of friends that are there. We’re friendly with the Cardinals. We try to go back in the summertime so we can catch a game and go to Ted Drewes and The Magic House and all that fun stuff. It’s actually quite good for kids.

Q

Corey: How would you compare growing up in Cardinal territory, the St. Louis baseball fans to the fans you’ve seen in other cities across the country?

Randy: Everybody says that St. Louis baseball fans are smart. This is the best example I can give. If an opposing pitcher comes and pitches a perfect game against St. Louis, he’ll get a standing ovation. Where else do see that? You don’t see that many other places.

Q

Corey: St. Louis is not known as a huge stand-up comedy town. Where did get your comedy jones growing up?

Randy: There was a scene. There were some really funny people in St. Louis when we were there. We started when we were super young. We grew up in the ‘80s. We started at The Funny Bone. The summer after our junior of college, we started doing open-mic nights and quickly went to opening for comedians and then featuring. We built our way through the system over one summer, and then we went back to college, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and performed at the University once a month. Then the Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Mich., doing that almost weekly. We were getting a lot of time in.

Q

Jason Sklar: First, we try to find some sort of premise that is truthful to our lives, that we hope is something that’s going to resonate with everyone, not just us. Then, we start to try and get the truth of that for a while before we even write a bit. Once we get what we’re trying to say, we try to figure out what’s funny about it. We just attack it the way we do. There is a back-and-forth. Even the set-up is restricted. The way to make the set-up funny and make it different than other comedians is to sort of tag-team the set up. Both of us want tell the story so badly that we’re like an eager couple who wants to share a story. You see it happen with married couples. Or best friends who shared an experience together. Sort of tag teaming and each takes a part. That in its own way is compelling and fun to watch and funny.

Q

Corey: Do you have a favorite St. Louis-style pizza?

Randy: Imo’s all the way. It’s not even a question. I want a pizza so thin you can slide it under a door. I love the type of cheese. My mouth is watering just explaining it to you. Just cheese and some hamburger on a cracker and I’m into it. Maybe a little red sauce.

Corey: The back-and-forth you two have onstage togethVisit supersklars.com for the Sklar er is impressive. Can you talk Brothers’ podcast, news, appearances about how that’s created? and more. n

Men All Dressed Up 10 June 2014

flaire FOR WOMEN

Men All Dressed Up Through the ages men have worn jewelry of many types depending on the styles of clothing prevalent at the time. At the beginning of the 1900’s men wore wide bias cut cravats around their necks and under the collar of their shirt. The cravats were often made of brightly colored silks held by jeweled pins, worn vertically or horizontally through the silk depending on the style: vertically if only one end was decorated, and horizontally if

both. This style of wide cravat and decorative pin morphed in to narrower ties which used tie pins or tie tacks which literally helped “keep the silk out of the soup” by holding the tie close to the shirt. A single pearl tie tack was a classic, like the one from Eddie’s father. Shirts of earlier, more formal times, often had what was called “French cuffs” which were held together at the wrist by cuff links instead of buttons. Cuff links could be simple

and made from base metals or made from precious metals and encrusted with gemstones. Sometimes the cuff link was solid or effectively “stiff” between the front and back while others were articulated with a movable bar or chain connector. Pocket watches were the norm for many decades until the technology was developed to make a small enough sturdy movement that could fit on a wrist and keep operating in

spite of the constant movements of the arm. The pocket watch was usually clipped to a chain that had a “T bar” or large loop attachment to the vest. A decorative watch fob hung from the chain to complete the look while the actual pocket watch went in the special small “watch pocket” of the pants. There are many collectors of pocket watches, chains and fobs, my husband Eddie being one of them. The fobs can be working compasses,

JUNE BARGAINS of the MONTH stripe down the outside of the leg, it is usually worn with a special tuxedo shirt, cummerbund and bow tie. This pleated-front or ruffled shirt usually requires cuff links for the sleeves and special studs (that come in from the back of the shirt) instead of buttons. The set of 22K cuff-links with four shirt studs pictured here was given to Eddie by his maternal uncle and has since graced his tuxedos for many years. Men’s jewelry for when they get “dressed up” can be everything from simple to complex. Enjoy….

Look stylish with necktie basics

16 June 2014

M

en’s formal attire would not be the same without the necktie. Men have been donning ties for generations, and during that time several different styles of knots have come into and fell out of fashion. The first step in wearing a tie is finding one that fits. Individuals who feel their ties come out just a tad too short once the knot has been tied may have to move from a standard 59-inch tie to an extra-long tie, which is a few inches longer. When buying ties, men should add their height in inches to their neck size in inches. If the sum of those measurements exceeds 91 inches, a longer tie figures to be a better fit. Ties come in many colors and patterns. A tie should complement the ensemble. Choose a tie that features the same hues as the suit and the shirt you intend to wear. Complementary colors include those that are opposite on the color wheel. Therefore, blue and orange goes well together, as does purple and yellow. A brightly colored tie can add some flair and personality to an ensemble. Once a tie is selected, choose a knot that will fit your personality and the style of dress. Here are the options:

Four in hand knot

This is one of the more common knots. It creates a narrow, slightly asymmetrical tie knot. It looks best on men with shorter necks but can be worn by anyone.

Pratt knot

The Pratt knot, sometimes referred to as the Shelby knot, is fairly wide. It fits well with wider neckties made from medium fabrics.

Windsor knot

This knot is wide and triangular. It can present an air of confidence and is a classic, conservative knot. It looks very good when paired with a spread shirt collar. Men who have long necks can benefit from a Windsor knot because it will shorten the perceived length of the neck a bit.

Half-Windsor knot

This is a variation on the Windsor knot, which creates a knot that is a little more narrow. It is effective with any dress shirt and can be used with somewhat wider neckties.

Bowtie knot

Most men rely on the bowtie knot for formal, elegant occasions. It is usually reserved for black-tie affairs worn in conjunction with a tuxedo.

Practice is usually needed to perfect these knots. It is understandable that after a knot is created you may just want to loosen the neck on the tie to remove it and leave the knot in place until the tie is used again. But this can shorten the life of the tie. It is essential to properly remove the tie each and every time. This means reversing the steps you did to tie the necktie to prolong its life. Once the tie is off, roll the tie around your hand to create a tube-like shape. Then store the tie in a drawer this way. Any wrinkles will ease out eventually. This method of storage is also a good way of packing ties for travel, as it prevents wrinkling and damage while in transit. Ties should not be stored dirty. Some stains can be spot-cleaned. Avoid harsh stain removers on silk ties, which are delicate. Drycleaning can take care of many stains, but it may eliminate the shine of the silk tie. Make every attempt to protect the tie from damage. It will help protect your investment and keep your outfits looking sharp.

Accessorize him! For the most part when it comes to fashion women are the ones with a wide array of style and selection when it comes to accessorizing a look. Man have little variation, albeit a tie, and as with Father’s Day this month I’m sure there are many fathers who would prefer something sophisticated, yet doesn’t belong around their neck. An often ignored element of style amongst men is the cuff links, which replace buttons in holding a shirt’s cuffs around a man’s wrists. Just check out these variety that are both sophisticated and fun. Other great accessories to get dad include a money clip, tie clip, sunglasses, belt and a watch.

Celebrate dad and some history this Father’s Day Father’s Day has been celebrated in one form or another since the beginning of the nineteenth century, but Father’s Day was not formally considered a holiday until 1972, when a Congressional Act officially designated the third Sunday in June Father’s Day. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Dads who are history buffs may want to celebrate this year’s holiday by reminiscing about the notable events that have occurred on June 15 through the years. Here are some of the many historical events that took place on June 15.

Help for Hernias By Emily Albright, M.D.

General Surgeon

A hernia can cause severe pain and other potentially serious problems that could require emergency surgery.

A hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal muscle have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear. One type of hernia more common in men than women is an inguinal hernia – a bulge in the groin or scrotum. Inguinal hernias account for 75% of all hernias and are most common in men. In the same way that an inner tube pushes through a damaged tire, the inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area of the abdominal wall to form a small balloon-like sac. This can allow loop of intestine or abdominal tissue to push into the sac. A hernia can cause severe pain and other potentially serious problems that could require emergency surgery. Both men and women can get a hernia – and you may be born with a hernia (congenital) or develop one over time. A hernia does not get better over time, nor will it go away by itself. Common areas where hernias occur are in the groin (inguinal), belly button (umbilical) and the site of a previous operation (incisional). It is usually easy to recognize a hernia. You may notice a bulge under the skin. You may feel pain when you lift heavy objects, cough, strain during urination or bowel movements, or during prolonged standing or sitting. The pain may be sharp and immediate or a dull ache that gets worse toward the end of the day. Severe, continuous pain, redness, and tenderness are signs that the hernia may be entrapped or strangulated. These symptoms are cause for concern and immediate contact of your physician or surgeon.

Most hernia operations are performed on an outpatient basis, and therefore you will probably go home on the same day that the operation is performed. Use of a truss (hernia belt) is rarely prescribed as it is usually ineffective. Surgical repair is done in one of two fashions – either a traditional open approach or a laparoscopic approach. This depends on your particular hernia. Usually you will be sent home the same day. With any hernia operation, you can expect some soreness mostly during the first 24 to 48 hours. You are encouraged to be up and about the day after surgery. With laparoscopic hernia repair, you will probably be able to get back to your normal activities within a short amount of time. These activities include showering, driving, walking up stairs, lifting, working and engaging in sexual intercourse. Any operation may be associated with complications. The primary complications of any operation are bleeding and infection, which are uncommon with laparoscopic hernia repair. Any time a hernia is repaired it can come back. This long-term recurrence rate is not yet known. Your surgeon will help you decide if the risks of laparoscopic hernia repair are less than the risks of leaving the condition untreated. Dr. Albright is a boardcertified general surgeon with Saint Anthony’s Physician Group. She has advanced Fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery and specializes in hernia repair. Gather around the grill this Father’s Day

20 June 2014

flaire FOR WOMEN

It’s all about remembering Dad’s favorites on Father’s Day. While everyone relaxes and enjoys the serenity of the backyard, these ribs will be slowly cooking to mouth-watering perfection.

Orange-Ginger Baby Back Ribs ngredients: 5 pounds baby back ribs Sauce: 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup hoisin sauce 4 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons grainy mustard 3 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons orange juice 2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon ginger Grated zest of an orange Salt and pepper Directions: Preheat the grill to medium and turn down to low. Prepare ribs for grilling by removing the membrane from the underside of the ribs. Prepare several foil envelopes and place 2 strips of ribs into each envelope, with 1/4 cup of water

and seal tightly. Cook for 2 to 21/2 hours on low (300*F) with the lid closed. Check the thermometer on the front of the grill lid frequently and adjust the cooking temperature accordingly. This may require turning one or two burners off and cooking indirectly. To prepare the sauce: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and set aside until the ribs are ready to remove from the foil. Gently heat the sauce on the side burner for 10 to 15 minutes before using. Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and place on grids. Baste generously with sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning several times, and basting with sauce after each turn. Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve on the side as a dipping sauce. Find additional recipes and grilling tips online at www.broilkingbbq.com.

Relaxation techniques to calm your nerves Since 2007, the American Psychological Association has commissioned an annual nationwide survey to examine the state of stress across the United States and understand its impact. The 2013 survey found that people continue to experience what they feel are unhealthy stress levels, with 42 percent of adult respondents reporting that their stress levels have increased over the past five years. In addition, 44 percent of survey respondents feel they aren’t doing enough to manage their stress, painting a potentially troubling future for people who cannot find better and healthier ways to manage their stress. The picture is none the rosier in Canada, where data from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey revealed that nearly 23 percent of Canadians aged 15 and older reported that most days were “quite a bit or extremely stressful.” While those figures marked a slight improvement from the previous year’s survey, it’s apparent that Though many people unfortustress is still a considerable connately regard stress as an inevicern for people throughout both table side effect of adulthood, it’s the United States and Canada. important that men, women and

even children avoid characterizing stress as simply a byproduct of a difficult and/or successful life and career. Even momentary stress,

often referred to as “acute stress,” like the kind that appears when stuck in a traffic jam, can have a potentially devastating impact on overall health. According to the American Institute of Stress, acute stress causes an increase in heart rate and stronger contractions of the heart muscle, and some medical professionals have suggested there is a link between repeated episodes of acute stress and heart attack. Regular use of relaxation techniques to reduce stress can help to counteract the effects of long-term stress, which the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes can contribute to depression, digestive disorders, headaches, high blood pressure, and insomnia. While it’s always best for anyone, and especially those people with heart disease, epilepsy, certain psychiatric conditions or a history of abuse or trauma, to consult their health care provider before attempting to address their stress on their own, the following are two popular relaxation techniques that may help relieve stress in a healthy way.

How to make

Father’s Day

22 June 2014

flaire FOR WOMEN

more enjoyable for Dad

Dad gets to be king of his castle at least one day during the year. Come mid-June, children near and far scramble for ideas to treat their fathers to a special day and award him with gifts for being a role model, provider and confidante. Father’s Day activities should be centered around Dad’s interests. With that in mind, the following are some ideas to honor Dad or another special man in your life.

Sports Sunday

If Dad is a sports fan, his idea of spending a fun-filled afternoon very well may be cheering on his favorite players. Whether your father enjoys golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, or another sport like hunting or fishing, chances are there is a television broadcast on that you can watch together. Otherwise, you can surprise Dad by purchasing tickets to a sporting event and making a day of it at the ballpark.

Beach bound

A relaxing day at the beach may be the perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Dad can enjoy the entire family while sitting back in his beach chair and watching the waves roll in. Pack a picnic lunch with his favorite foods and a cold beer, and Dad may just say this was his best celebration yet.

Adventure seeker

If yours is a father who enjoys living on the edge, a Father’s Day activity built around action and adventure should be a winner. Take Dad base jumping, rock climbing, scuba diving, or race car driving. Any of these activities is bound to get Dad’s adrenaline pumping.

R&R

Dad’s idea of the perfect Father’s Day may be an afternoon free of obligations and deadlines. A relaxing day in the yard swimming laps in the

pool or hitting a few grounders to your waiting baseball mitt may be all the excitement he needs. Toss a few steaks on the grill to give Father’s Day a truly perfect ending.

Impromptu party

Some dads like to be the center of attention. A Father’s Day party thrown in his honor, complete with friends and family, can be an entertaining way to spend the day. If you are worried about interrupting others’ Father’s Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father’s Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Finger foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music are all that you need to host a festive function. Plan a Father’s Day celebration with your dad in mind. Cater to his favorite activities and opt for entertainment that he will enjoy.
