It’s autumn. A season of change and the anniversary month that transformed my life. On Oct. 4, my son will celebrate his 21st birthday. It’s hard to believe he’s now “legal.” Through the years I’ve shared my son’s milestones with you. It’s not been easy being a single parent, but it’s been the most rewarding thing in my life and I enjoy sharing it. When my son left, a new season, entered mine. Empty nest syndrome kicked in. No, it’s not a medical condition, but as anyone who’s gone through it knows it’s a combination of separation anxiety, sadness, satisfaction and possibility. A condition, with time, gets better. Life is full of unexpected changes and no matter how much you prepare it’s tough when your child leaves home. Especially when you put most of your of focus on them. Learning how to embrace the empty nest is one part of the journey of parenthood, as is bringing a child into your home. I’ve been learning to navigate my way back to something other than being a mother when I’m not working. I keep myself busy spending time with family and friends. Of course I always have time for fashion. Who doesn’t like shopping? Of course there may be a few women, but I enjoy finding bargains and going thrifting. I share my fashion finds on my blog — cynsationalgirl.wordpress.com. This month I will serve as an official blogger for Saint Louis Fashion Week. (Check out preview of the upcoming event inside.) I’m excited. I’ve been to fashion week in the past and there is so much to see. Blogging keeps me busy and I need that. I’m all about accepting the changes in my life. My son was most definitely the biggest one when he came into it and now that he’s gone it’s just been an adjustment, but I’m enjoying my new “season.”

r e n g desi NEW YORK (AP) — Move over, David Beckham: You’ve been usurped by Miley Cyrus as Fashion Week’s latest celebrity designer. Cyrus debuted her funky jewelry, made of children’s alphabet beads, little toys and lots of other colorful stuff, at designer Jeremy Scott’s show Wednesday in a downtown Manhattan gallery space. The atmosphere was suitably frenetic — even more so than usual at the bad-boy designer’s shows. Beforehand, photographers swarmed Cyrus, dressed in a bright multicolored ensemble of trousers and bra top, along with some of her handmade jewelry. And after the runway show, in which many outfits included Cyrus’ creations — including wildly colorful beaded headgear — Scott came out for a bow, scooped the pop singer up from her front-row seat, and brought her along for a victory lap. Backstage, Scott explained how the pop singer had come to design for him. “We live really close to each other in LA, and she had a little party and I came over,” Scott said. “And she started showing me these things she was making, and I said ‘Wow, this kind of looks like my collection — it’s colorful and stream-of-consciousness and everything just kind of goes and somehow works. I was like, ‘Oh my god this looks so cool, would you think about doing something?’” “And she said absolutely. And then the next day I sent her a text and said I was dead serious about the jewelry for the show, if you’re into it. And she was like, ‘I thought you were joking, I’m so happy!’ And then she’s calling me and saying, ‘OK, we have to start planning.’ And she just got into and she did it. She made everything herself.” Scott said his collection as a whole was inspired by the idea of “a music festival — like an outdoor party on the beach, or at a bonfire. It’s like, no roof, nighttime, music playing, people having fun.” It included lots of bright, hippie-like garments, patchwork pants, ruffled minidresses, and great sneaker boots in bright colors, adorned with flowers. A big theme was Shrek — his face adorned a sweater, and a shirt that said, “Shrek Happens.” If you were getting sleepy, there were teddy-bear slippers, pajamas, even a man wearing a quilt over his shoulders. Whoopi Goldberg, attending the show along with her granddaughter, said she enjoyed herself. “So much fun,” she said. “I could see my granddaughter in everything.” Including the Shrek sweater? “I want the Shrek sweater,” she said. “I’m too old, but I want it.”

Fashion will once again be walking the runway in the Gateway City this month during Saint Louis Fashion Week. The eighth annual event will be held at various venues around the city showcasing local designers and newcomers to the fashion scene. The event was founded in 2006 with a mission of creating a platform for national designers to reach their Midwest customers and local fashion designers to launch their careers. Fashion week has showcased designers such as Rebecca Taylor, Tess Giberson, Rachel Pally, Black Halo and Evan Franco increasing demand

for these brands in the Midwest. More than 10,000 people attend the event, which raises money for local charities. The event officially kicked off in late September with the official St. Louis Fashion Blog Awards, which the public voted on 75 area fashion bloggers. Nine events over seven days will showcase these events: Neiman Marcus panel discussion and fashion presentation 6 p.m., Oct. 9 at Plaza Frontenac, St. Louis Saint Louis Fashion Fund Emerging Designer Competition and After Party presented by Brown Shoe Co. at 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Union Station, St. Louis Designer Showcase and Wrap Party with Yigal Azrouel, Tess Giber-

Maxed out for fall fashion

flaire FOR WOMEN

Most of us can’t wait to wear a new season’s wardrobe. We pack up our attire from one season to the next, yet one of the easiest way to transition from summer to fall is by changing up our favorite maxi dress or skirt. Here are a couple tips to for maxing out your fall wardrobe: Layer it - Add neutral, lightweight layers like an oversized scarf or a loose cardigan. Layers are a great choice, especially in early fall when the weather fluctuates constantly. Removing a sweater or scarf during a particularly warm afternoon can be a much simpler solution than an entire change of wardrobe. Pattern or Textures - Pick at least one of your layers to have a varying pattern or texture. It creates dimension. Wear a patterned scarf to add contrast. Dress it Down - Wear a T-shirt, denim jacket and add a cross-body bag and a floppy hat to give the look a more relaxed feel. Casual pieces create a more day-friendly look. Dress it Up- Pair a solid color skirt or dress with a sequined top. By keeping the bottom simple you’ll be sure to keep the focus on top and shine. Pair with Neutrals - Another trick to maximizing your summer pieces is to pair your summer hues with neutral tones. Balancing a pink dress with shades of grey make for a great fall color scheme. Closed toes - Pair your maxis with flats or boots. Besides keeping your feet warm, your shoe style can change the overall look. Cowboy boots will give a more relaxed feel, wearing ballet flats can dress it up. - CYNTHIA M. ELLIS

Arm Candy The overall look of an outfit is often brought together by the sum of its parts. The accessories are the details that tie the look together and “arm candy” is one that can make it stand out. From multi-chain bracelets and large statement chunky cuffs, this is an area of style that your imagination can run wild. Assembling a stylish stack is not always an easy feat — after all you need take into account various sizes, shapes, textures, metals and hues. The key is mixing and matching bracelets. Here are three types of looks to layer: Edgy — Don’t be afraid to wear a hefty cuff, which will ground your stack. Wear contrast metals then add pieces with a hint of “handcuff chic,” studded or spiked. Preppy —No preppy look is complete without a monogrammed piece, start with a traditional initial bracelet. To break up gold or silver elements, add a subtle pop of color with brightly colored beads, a chunky link bracelet with or without charms, an enamel bracelet and a touch of leather. Even a large-faced watch can be added into the mix. Feminine — Wear a dainty, shiny understated piece, then add some sparkle, even an animal print adds allure; something big and flashy; simple white beaded. — CYNTHIA M. ELLIS

Breast Cancer: Not so pretty in pink

10 October 2014

flaire FOR WOMEN

By CYNTHIA M. ELLIS

Jenn Lyke was 36 when she discovered two lumps in her breast more than two years ago. She immediately called her doctor and set up an appointment. She said her doctors reassured her that it was nothing because of her age and the fact that they had never seen cancer show up in two lumps Lyke side-by-side before. An ultrasound was scheduled and the lumps appeared benign, but just to be sure a surgeon removed them for biopsy. After seeing the lumps the surgeon felt 99 percent sure it was nothing.

“So when I got the call, it was a shock,” she said. A year earlier Jenn was concerned about cancer after her twin was diagnosed with disease. “My sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer almost a year to the day that I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said. “She was 35 and I was 36. I went to my OBGYN immediately after she was diagnosed to get checked out and everything looked good. “I was too young to get a mammogram at the time.” More than 66,090 Illinois residents were diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and nearly 11,000 of those

“I made a point never to miss a baseball game – even though towards the end of chemo the bone pain was so intense that I had to sit at the game with sunglasses on because there were tears in my eyes from pain,” she said. Another aspect that empowered her during her journey was sharing moments on Facebook and writing a blog about her experience. “It was part of the healing process to share my journey openly with family and friends,” she said. “I feel like there is so much pink washing out there that breast cancer is often seen as ‘easy’ or ‘the cool cancer’ and that’s just not the case. It’s time to move beyond the pink ribbon.” She said she believes more efforts should be focused on prevention and the knowledge that you are at a higher risk if you have dense breast tissue or changing the type of food you eat. She said whenever the month of October, or rather “Pinktober,” arrives, she cringes at the thought of seeing the “princess pink” color everywhere. “Breast cancer isn’t a pink ribbon. It isn’t a pink glove dance, or a bucket ‘o chicken,” she said. “It’s a horrifying, tremble-with-fear, scare-fest from hell that snatches moms from their children and grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters, aunts and nieces from their families everyday.” It isn’t a gift – unless you like gifts with the potential to “keep on giving” in a way that could kill you at any time, she said. Jenn said we should say good-bye and good riddance to Pinktober, because there are survivors, fighters and families of those who didn’t beat the disease who absolutely “HATE” to see the “pretty in pink” color each year. “I feel we need to put the pink ribbon back where it belongs, tied around the pony tail of a little girl’s hair or on her birthday present,” she said. “Pink ribbons are happy, girly and cute. As far as I’m concerned breast cancer will never be any of these things.”

October 2014 11

in around her, the house was dark and loud. “Even though I had my family and friends, I was never more alone,” she said. The Belleville resident had a heightened awareness about cancer and programs offered to women with the disease thanks to her time working with the American Cancer Society in its Maryville office. She served as an event manager for the American Cancer Society, and put together the Metro East’s first Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Belleville as well as served on the committee for the annual Mardi Gras Ball when it was held at Lockhaven Country Club in Godfrey. “I believe working for ACS helped me know where to look for resources and where to go for the best medical care,” she said. She said the worst is all that goes on between initial diagnosis and finding out the full pathology report and getting a treatment plan together. “It was pure agony,” she said. Jenn underwent a bilateral

mastectomy with tissue expander reconstruction, six chemotherapy treatments along with 33 rounds of radiation and DIEP flap reconstruction. She was like most women who go through chemotherapy and lose their hair. It wasn’t easy, she said. “It was the rotten icing on the most terrible cake,” she said. “I was fortunate to find some great wigs and to find a way to feel beautiful.” She also had just started a new job at the time and didn’t want anyone to see her as anything other than a vibrant young professional. “I succeeded in that, nobody knew what I was going through except the people in my department,” she said. Jenn said her faith is what kept her going, along with the support of her husband Michael and her sons, ages 8 and 10 at the time. She said the first time she ever saw her husband shed a tear is when he learned of her cancer. “His laid-back ‘everything’s going to be alright’ attitude kicked in fast,” she said. “He never had any doubt in his mind that I was going to bounce back and be just fine – even when my mind was going to the dark side.” She said her youngest son got to work making her flowers out of duck tape and her oldest son understood more about what cancer meant and took it harder than his brother. Through all her treatment her family kept up with their normal routines, such as mountain biking and hiking, she said.

were breast cancer patients. For these brave individuals, various organizations such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc., Breast Cancer Fund, American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen foundation are doing what they can in the fight against the disease. These organizations promote early detection, hold fundraising events to raise money for research and provide services for the women undergoing treatment. Jenn feels instead of using pink to raise awareness and represent the predominantly woman’s disease, a haunted house symbol should be used. From the moment Jenn felt the bumps to her diagnosis, she said it was like taking a walk into a dark, scary place - a haunted house. “Not knowing what to expect, being jumpy and full of fear, but still having hope that I’d be able to run the other way and not go any further into the house,” she said. About a month later Jenn felt she entered the haunted house again, all alone, and the door slamming behind her. “There were scary things lurking around every corner, especially in that first month,” she said. “A place so lonely, so dark and so terrifying. I was poked, prodded, scanned, and parts of my body were cut off. “I was faced with the fear of not knowing if they caught it early, or if it would be a more advanced case. Would I be alive to see my children grow up? What would losing their mother at such a a young age do to them? How would I tell them I had cancer?” She said the walls were caving

Brooklyn show looks at mystique of

‘killer heels’

NEW YORK (AP) — “Killer Heels” are coming to Brooklyn. A new exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum looks at the elevated shoe as a design object, from platform shoes dating to about 1600 to a contemporary — and lethal — 8-inch dagger stiletto. “Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe,” now open, runs through Feb. 15, after which it will travel around the United States. Iterations of the elevated heel — a signifier of sexiness, femininity, glamour and status through the ages — fill display cases: Some with triangleand ball-shaped heels, others with twisted, trapezoidal and even furry heels. There’s even a gravity-defying skyscraper platform embraced by Lady Gaga. By and large, design trumps comfort in these 218 creations. The earliest examples date to about 1550, high platforms called chopines made of wood or cork worn by both noblewomen and courtesans of Renaissance Venice to suggest a taller and elongated figure. But elevated footwear can be traced to the first century B.C. The exhibition features a picture of a statue of the Goddess Aphrodite teetering on high platform sandals. “My goal was to bring together a group of historical and contemporary highheeled shoes that spoke to all the amazing designs that we have seen over centuries,” said Lisa Small, the museum’s curator of exhibitions. “I was looking for designs that are innovative in some way, that push boundaries, that sometimes don’t even look like a shoe at all.” The show also includes conceptual designs and 3-D printed shoes, including a concoction that looks like a mass of tendrils seemingly emerging from the ground and

turning into a plant. It’s arranged into six themes including Revival and Reinterpretation, Glamour and Fetish and Space Walk. Contemporary designs are juxtaposed with earlier iterations to show the relationship across time and cultures. “We’re living in a very interesting moment in which footwear is both a focus of cultural meaning but where many high heels also are seen as works of art,” said Elizabeth Semmelhack, a senior curator at Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto that has loaned pieces for the exhibition. One standout in the show, if only because of its bizarre concept, is a Japanese design created after the Fukushima nuclear accident. Its designers constructed a shoe with a mechanism that contains seeds of a plant with properties that leech contaminants from the soil. As you walk, the seeds are planted into the soil through the high heel, “the idea being that the plant will grow and help repair the soil,” said Small. Among the historical pieces is an elaborate wood sandal worn by women in bathhouses of the Ottoman Empire to keep their feet high above the wet floors. There’s also a Japanese Geta, or clog, worn by elite courtesans that’s so high they had to walk in a figure-8 pattern. There are sensible heels too, including 18th century slippers worn by aristocratic women that are richly embroidered or done in brocade fabric. The show “vividly demonstrates the incredible staying power of the high heel,” both as a status symbol and as a part of feminine allure, said Caroline Weber, an expert in 18th century French literature and culture. “In the history of fashion, not a single other accessory has functioned for that long and with that much consistency.”

Growing up an “Army brat,” Shira Ortega moved around a lot. Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Washington, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey and Alaska were all called home at one time. When she was just 8 years old, spending summers with her grandmother, she began helping in the kitchen, preparing dishes with a Latin flair like empenadas, Spanish rice and fried plantains. “Then I got bored and wanted to try other cuisines,” Shira said. When her cousin married an Italian man, she taught Shira to make Italian food. While living in Washington state, Shira’s Asian friend opened up the world of – you guessed it - Asian cooking. Shira moved to the local area in 2003, when her father was transferred to Scott Air Force Base, and she finally tried her hand at good old American fare like meatloaf, gravy and pork chops. “My dad and my two stepbrothers and their friends were my ‘guinea pigs,’” Shira said. “I would try something new, and they would tell me if it needed a little more of this

or a little less of that. They were always hungry, and I loved cooking for them.” Some of her biggest hits with the “boys” were egg rolls, homemade stuffed shells and chicken Parmesan. Now a Godfrey resident, she keeps her gourmet cooking skills in top notch form preparing a family style dinner once a week for about a dozen friends, who request her tried

and true recipes like meatballs stuffed with mozzarella or provolone cheese, vegan chili with tofu, crab Rangoon and Southwestern black bean burgers, and sample her new concoctions – some that they have suggested she try. Currently, she’s working on developing the perfect Alfredo sauce and expanding to include desserts. “I’ve never really baked, so

dessert was always missing,” Shira said. That’s when she began making what has become her specialty – candied strawberries. Heath with a toffee crunch, caramel walnut (with her own special caramel), Almond Joy and traditional milk chocolate-covered strawberries are given as gifts for holidays and birthdays. Some are even infused with wine. Each year, she explores new ways to spice up or sweeten up her strawberries. Earlier this year, she donated dozens of the delectable treats for a local benefit. Her daughter, Janessa, is not always on board for dishes that are too out of the norm, but she and her friends enjoy Shira’s “Kid’s Sushi” made with Rice Krispies and fruit roll ups, and she thinks her mom is the “best cook ever.” “I don’t worry much about calories when I’m cooking; I worry about what tastes good, and I put all my love in it,” Shira said. She attended Lewis and Clark Community College, earning an associate’s of science degree. Now a hospitality specialist at Saint Anthony’s Health Center, she still finds time to exercise, walking the neighborhood with friends.

Spread remaining mustard/ketchup mix on top of meatloaf, and add remaining onions. Place slices of bread along the side of dish to absorb oil from meatloaf. Bake an additional 10 minutes. Remove bread slices and serve.

‘True Tori’

NEW YORK (AP) — Tori Spelling is willing to go there for a second time. Lifetime says filming began Thursday on another season of “True Tori.” On the show, cameras follow Spelling as she works to piece together her marriage after her actor-husband, Dean McDermott, was caught in a cheating scandal late last year.

While McDermott is on the series, “True Tori” focuses on the 41-year-old Spelling. In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press for her ABC Family comedy, “Mystery Girls,” Spelling said doing “True Tori” was “a great experience” because it helped get her story out, rather than letting tabloids tell their version. Season two of “True Tori” premieres Oct. 21.

Season two coming October 21

Calvin Klein goes NEW YORK (AP) — When Fashion Week moved into its final day, some of the design world’s biggest names showed their spring 2015 collections on the runways. Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs all were presenting on Thursday, Sept. 11, as eight days featuring shows by approximately 200 designers came to a close. Among the highlights: Calvin Klein embraces curves Classic and sophisticated, the spring collection from Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein

moved fluidly in papyrus white sleeveless dresses and red and blue leather. Save a bit of patchwork and silver metallic embroidery, the clothes were urban chic, either daintily belted or swinging free. Costa said in a backstage interview after the show that he wanted the female body front and center. “Making the body a little more exposed in a way, you know, giving the woman a little more curve, which I love. I’ve never done a silhouette like that,” he said. “So we have

fluted skirts, really beautiful engineered knits creating incredible shapes under tanks tops. It was fun to play with that.” In the front row were Sarah Jessica Parker and Rooney Mara, along with industry heavyweights that included Anna Wintour. Ralph Lauren takes a fashion safari If you’re the woman who savors a luxurious candlelit dinner while on safari — or maybe just wants to channel a safari while at a dinner party closer

to home — Ralph Lauren hears you. The designer’s spring 2015 collection was heavy on khakis, safari jackets and cargo pants, and played with the notion of safari as it moved into evening wear, too. Lauren described the collection as “about an exotic kind of luxury, the spirit of a romantic safari emboldened by luminous colors played against the heritage of pure khakis in sleek and modern shapes. “ And his final item was the starkest example: a sage green

classic, sophisticated leather and make it almost sheer — like the sheerness of chiffon,” said Hernandez in a backstage interview. Some of the most striking designs were in what they called a “leather crochet” — leather, but almost diaphanous. The duo also used python, in belts and in all kinds of trim, in various colors: blue, black and white, and most strikingly, orange, in a coat. “We always like a bit of animal, a bit of something savage,” McCollough said. The show began with more

buttoned-up silhouettes, with long-sleeved dresses buttoned to the neck, roomy coats, and jackets with hoods. As it progressed, the shapes started dissolving. In the end, dresses appeared with long fringes, as if, well, deconstructed. Hernandez said the duo’s creative inspiration this time was “the ideas of classic American sportswear, taking those ideas and filtering them through our vision, so in the end they’re a little more abstract, I guess a little more twisted than real classics.”

one I went to, I used to wander around and wish I could afford the things that were there! “ Snakes on a runway at Proenza Schouler Designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough — the duo known as Proenza Schouler — love contrasts. Proenza’s runway featured their usual inventive uses of fabric and texture, especially in leather and in knitwear, in ultramodern, sophisticated pieces. “We’re really attracted to leather, especially for spring, so we wanted to perforate the

silk taffeta evening dress, which looked like a safari jacket on top, only with a skirt billowing out like an evening gown on the bottom. Lauren’s show, which always comes on the final day of Fashion Week, is one of the highestprofile as well. In the front row was actress Julianne Moore, a Lauren fan. “Oh my gosh — what’s not to love?” the actress said. “I mean classic, American style. When I first moved to New York City, the Ralph Lauren store on Madison Avenue was the first

Even in these technology rich times, sometimes the lines of communication still get tangled like vines in the jungle. This was the first thing I heard when I finally connected with Dawn Wells:

by COREY STULCE

Corey Stulce: Let’s talk about this great, new book. It was actually very refreshing to read something that wasn’t a trashy tell-all, like “Lovey Howell was a Communist,” that sort of thing.

Q

Dawn Wells: It’s not an autobiography, either. I had an awful lot of fun writing it. After you write it and turn it in, you have no idea what it’s going to look like. It’s an easy read, and I’m very proud of it.

Q

Corey: I’m curious what the process was putting it together.

Dawn: I’ve gone through several writers, and I wanted it to be my voice. I don’t type, so I thought

it would take me three years. My idea is, it’s a guide to life, but sort of tongue-in-cheek. Fans all over the world have such love for this character, it’s unbelievable. Boys and girls, men and women, she has really made a difference; she connected. I began to realize my mother taught me Mary Ann values, growing up in Las Vegas, which is amazing with the gambling and prostitution and all that. There were some good things to pass along.

Q

Corey: Is there a life lesson that jumps out at you that you would like people to take away from it?

Dawn: I’m kind of persistent. Stick with it. So, you fail. Of course you’re not going be a winner all the way along. It’s up to you to keep at it. Each year you grow with what you think you need to become.

Q

Corey: You credit Tina Louise with helping you learn camera angles and makeup. Is there a moment that stands out when you think of learning the ropes? Dawn: There were two or three things. False eyelashes were just coming in. Tina said, “I’ve got somebody in New York City,” and the eyelashes were mink. That’s pretty thick. I thought continued on page 26

Ah, but Mary Ann has learned a lot over the years on and off “Gilligan’s Island,” and Wells is sharing those life lessons in the new book, “What Would Mary Ann Do?” cowritten with Steve Stinson.

“This is Mary Ann calling, trying to get through with this damn bamboo telephone cord! I was calling the wrong area code, and someone was answering in French. Forgive me, I haven’t learned much in 50 years being on this stupid island.”

from page 25 that was so chi chi. That’s really cool. She was a movie star and a beautiful woman, but she also knew what her best side was. She’s beautiful from both sides, but she always wanted her left side to be showing. That’s, again, knowing who you are. I designed the shorts. Me in short shorts with Tina Louise with legs up to her elbows would make me look like a little squat person. I designed the shorts to come up on the sides a little bit. I had to cover my navel, but I also got them down on the sides, which made my legs look longer. It’s all an illusion about who you want the world to see you as.

Q

Corey: I laughed out loud at the story of your “cocaine teeth.”

Dawn: It’s so funny. I have these two, little beaver teeth in front. My dentist said, “I don’t want to grind down two good teeth.” Now, everyone has veneers, but they didn’t have that then. He said, “I’ll make you these little, temporary ones.” It gave me a little bit of a different smile. I kept them in this vial in my bra, because every time I would take a bite of candy, I would chew them up. Not until we did the specials did the assistant director say, “Dawn, please just turn around and put your teeth in and show everybody, because the audience is like, ‘She’s sniffing cocaine. She turns around, and put something in there, turns back around and smiles.’” Lesson learned. Corey: It’s amazing to think that we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Gilligan’s Island.” It’s one of the shows that every kid in America just kind of falls in love with at some point in time no matter what generation it is.

Q

For Flaire

Dawn: I think we’re the longest one in the history of syndication. We have never been off the air since ’64. We’re in 30 languages.

Q

Corey: What do you think of the show’s legacy?

Dawn: I’ve had fans say to me, “I saw this as a child. My family was mean to me, and I would come home and I would sit in

front of the television set and my fears would go away.” Every third letter to me says something like that. Gilligan may have been a buffoon, but he was still loved and hit a core.

Q

Corey: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Dawn: I’m sure as I get a little closer to the end, I’d love to be known for my “Lion in

Winter” or something that nobody would cast me as. I remember trying to do “The Vagina Monologues.” “Are you kidding me?” When the series went off the air, it was kind of a challenge. I’m blessed to have been connected with something that is loved and has sustained so long. I have no regrets. But, I can’t get into the short shorts anymore!
