I

am often grateful for how fortunate I am to live in a community with such a vibrant arts and culture scene. For a small resort community at the base of one of the world’s most sought-after ski mountains, we offer extraordinary access to myriad local and international art.

From a world-renowned contemporary-art museum to wine and painting workshops at The Red Brick, Aspen is the perfect place to get out of your cultural comfort zone — or dive deeper into it. From world-class photography and shattered-glass masterpieces to one-of-a-kind 19th-century contemporary-art pieces and bronze works, there is something for every art palate. Art also holds a special meaning for The Aspen Times. Last year, we established a high school scholarship in the name of our late publisher, Gunilla Asher, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. We funded the scholarship by selling “G a Bear” giclee reproductions of an original work of art commissioned by Gunilla’s sister, artist Linda Israel, to hang in The Aspen Times. More information about how to purchase a giclee is located on page 35. I encourage you to spend some time on the pages of Art in Aspen. Take a tour of the galleries on our map. You’ll be taken aback by the talent that exists in our little corner of the world. I challenge you to get involved in our arts scene while you’re here — take a class, attend an opening, listen to a visiting lecturer, or simply enjoy the current installation at the Aspen Art Museum. You won’t be disappointed.

P

eter Lik is a leader in the world of fine art photography. For decades, his name has been synonymous with pristine landscape images of cascading waterfalls, ethereal mountain peaks and peaceful desert canyons. Opened in 2008, LIK ASPEN is one of 15 locations around the country, showcasing some of Peter’s most impressive masterworks. The gallery’s interior warmly welcomes guests with its impressive stone fireplace and reclaimed wood ceiling. Local-themed landscapes line the walls—from majestic visions of the Maroon Bells to Peter’s stunning 20 ft. EPIC of Autumn Mist. Such exceptional work can only be attributed to a photographer with innate talent and passion. Born in Melbourne Australia to hardworking

Czech immigrants, Peter never took the gift of life’s beauty for granted. Since his first, fateful snapshot of a spider web at the age of 8, Peter has followed his calling to capture and share the most beautiful places on earth. During a trip to the United States in 1984, Peter discovered the medium format camera, a defining moment for the accredited Master Photographer. In the years since, countless awards, exhibitions at the Smithsonian, and record-breaking sales have all marked an extraordinary career in landscape photography. Surrounded by 3,000 ft. mountains on all sides, LIK ASPEN is perfectly nestled in the “downtown core,” near Restaurant Row in the historic Isis building. Visit LIK ASPEN today, and discover the world through the lens of Peter Lik.

G

allery owner Ann Korologos is fond of saying, “A gallery is a place where you can lose yourself in your own moment and travel to the artist’s moment. Art brings out our humanness and our instincts for something greater than ourselves.” To Korologos, it is important for art lovers to get to know artists personally or at least gain insight into their works. “One of the gallery’s goals is for people to leave the gallery with a deeper understanding of the art,” Korologos says. “I appreciate the past, but have a better feel for living artists. Knowing the artists brings much more dimension to the perception of their work.” Visitors to the gallery find contemporary western fine art by nationally known masters such as Michael Kessler, Sarah Lamb and Dean Mitchell on view alongside works by regional favorites Terry Gardner, Leon Loughridge, Jill Soukup, Andy Taylor, Michael Wisner, Dinah Worman and Dan Young. The subject matter ranges from traditional landscape and figural painting to abstraction. In recent years, the gallery’s roster of sculptors has expanded and now includes Neil Clifford, Veryl Goodnight, Gordon Gund, Amy Laugesen, Lloyd Schermer and Immi Storrs. The gallery’s art and literature series has hosted such respected authors as Walter Isaacson, Dr. Ben Carson and Secretary Madeline Albright, among others. In summing up her gallery’s mission, Korologos explains, “We exhibit Western art and represent artists influenced by the West... but we are well aware that the West is as varied as the landscape and the artists living here.” 12

ver his 35 year career, Albert Sanford, owner of Galerie Maximillian, has always believed in one standard when buying art: “If I’m not willing to hang a piece in my own home, it does not deserve a place on the walls of my gallery, or in my client’s home.” It is this passionate, personal relationship to art and the experience of collecting that makes Galerie Maximillian one of Aspen’s finest.

ART IN ASPEN // WINTER 2016

Here you will find work by the world’s most coveted artists, both modern and contemporary, housed in an environment that is welcoming and engaging. Clients become friends and visit the gallery season after season, year after year. This is a priceless relationship rooted in trust. “Our customers have confidence in our expertise and they appreciate the fact that we are one of the longest running galleries in Aspen,” says Sanford. “Established in 1997, we are committed to spending time with our clients, helping them build quality collections that they can enjoy and be proud of for generations.” The gallery changes installations frequently, so it is almost guaranteed you will see something new every visit. This winter the gallery has two extraordinary shows on the schedule. 65 Modern and Contemporary Prints opens on December 18th and continues through April 1st. This collection of museum quality, original prints, represents the gallery’s ongoing commitment to presenting historically significant works, as well as compelling new artists and projects. “I travel

extensively, keep a close eye on the art market and buy opportunistically,” says Sanford. “This ensures that we always have a multitude of great works of art to choose from.” Modern and postwar artists featured are: Picasso, Braque, Dubuffet, Matisse, Miró, Lichtenstein, Richter, Judd and Naumann. Contemporary offerings include important American artists: Mel Bochner, Jim Dine, Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud and Christopher Wool, as well as, renowned British artists Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Chris Ofili, Grayson Perry and Ian Davenport. The second exhibition coincides with the arrival of many international visitors to Aspen/Snowmass after the New Year – particularly from the Southern Hemisphere. Mila Mayer, a talented photographer who resides in Sao Paulo, Geneva and Snowmass, is guest curator of the show entitled: 5 Artists: Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Ian Davenport, Julian Opie and Sarah Morris. The show includes a set of colorful, geometric prints by Sarah Morris called “Bye, Bye, Brazil,” a collection of rhythmical “Colorfall” etchings by Turner Prize nominee Ian Davenport, as well as, new works by Mayer inspired by some of the “YBA’s” (Young British Artists) in the show. The exhibition opens Thursday, January 14th, with a reception from 6 - 8 p.m. including Mila Mayer “in person,” and continues through February 15th.

FURNITURE DESIGNS change with the seasons as the age of impermanence flood the aisles of every big box store. Despite this “throw away” mentality, owner and designer of Mak.iT Design Company Hillary Brigid has remained loyal to the simple beauty of nature’s purest elements. Creating streamlined pieces out of solid hardwood, soft natural stone and steel she is reintroducing the worthiness of Heirloom status. As a Colorado native with an acclaimed background in sculpture, furniture and lighting design, Hillary Brigid gives us a modern flare to the word ‘natural’. Her mark on the world of design started early. Beginning her education studying architecture at CU Boulder she developed a strong eye for the built environment. As she continued on to sculpture, she began fostering her passion for the scaled down beauty of functional art. As this affinity grew she finished up her studies with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from Metropolitan State in Denver. From there she began her first business, Mode Squared,

which focused on Interior Architecture and furniture for restaurants and night clubs throughout the Denver area. Winning many accolades for her designs and talent she has traveled the country as the first female Vice President of Colorado’s IDSA University Chapter. Well versed in the subtle art of form and function, Hillary has since had the opportunity to work side by side with esteemed artists including Michael Clapper, Reanne Karin and Michael Bowman. Currently living in Aspen, Hillary’s new business Mak. iT Design Company is again turning heads with the beauty of her clean lined furniture that stay true to the natural beauty of sustainably sourced solid hardwoods, steel, and stone. Creating one of a kind furniture pieces that span from Mid-Century Modern to simplistic Temple inspired designs she commissions pieces for clients in the Dallas and Aspen areas. From city to secluded mountain retreats, Hillary continues to make her mark as she creates customized pieces of functional art and furniture that will stay within the family for generations. ike so many locals, Aspen has held a special charm for Katherine since she visited almost fi fteen years ago. She did not even need to “stay for the summer” to know this was where she would make her forever home. Now she is making a stronger stand with Aspen with the opening of her jewelry store Katherine LeGrand. Capitalizing on the experience she has gained by working with Ross Andrews for the past eleven years, she brings her creative design dreams to fruition every day. Many locals have already worked with her on custom engagement and wedding set designs.
