SPECIALISTS A SPECIALIST is an individual that specializes in a particular type of medicine, like Orthopedics, Oncology, or Psychiatry. If your specialist appointment requires a referral, you can often get approval for your referral before you even leave your primary care doctor’s office. Some specialty services are available without an authorized referral from your doctor (called “self-referral”), such as well-woman visits, and some health insurance plans do not require you to get an authorized referral to see a specialist. Ask your primary care physician which services you are eligible to receive without prior authorization.
