oodbye ski season, hello sunshine. As the aspen trees bud new green, and gardens the county over bloom purple and blue and red, it’s time to tilt our heads toward the sun and drink in the season’s fresh perspective. Spring cleaning isn’t just a marketing term to sell cleaning products — it’s a long-standing ritual in cultures the world over. It feels good to usher out the old and ring in the new — especially when “the old” includes dust bunnies, worn-out furniture and piles of unnecessary papers. It’s a great time to turn our attention to our homes. Some of us will rearrange and declutter, others will buy and start anew. Either way, it’s a season of rejuvenation and refreshment on the home front. The secret’s out, though. Lots of people are interested in moving to Eagle County, and it’s becoming competitive since the inventory is limited. So enlist the guidance and experience of a REALTOR. Our organization, its members and partners exist to provide the most informed, ethical and comprehensive options for clients and their real estate needs for both primary and secondary residences as well as rental properties. And nobody knows the local market like we do.

Enjoy the season,

arsh and heavy home cleaning products full of chemicals can damage your furniture and finishes, plus leave an irritating smell behind. For your spring cleaning this year, consider using one of the newer lines of designer cleaning products or even making your own! Products such as Mrs. Meyer’s, Caldrea, and Thymes are gentler on the environment and home. They’re especially great for children and those with allergies or sensitive skin. You can also make your own cleaning spray from basic pantry staples like vinegar and lemon juice. The fresh-smelling scents will have you excited to spray down those screens, open the windows, and get ready for summer breezes.

I

your space fresh, take a tip from Slifer: Switch it up. This talented team changes the look of their design showroom in Edwards every Wednesday, so the space never gets stale. “The key is variety,” explains Lisa Mikels, showroom manager for Slifer Designs. “We strive to keep various looks and styles on the floor at all times so that we have something for everyone.”

Strategic Style The “Wednesday transfer” is mostly in the hands of Addie Lagace, visual merchandiser, and Tara Klaers, buyer and visual merchandiser. “Addie and I walk the floor on Monday afternoon,” Klaers explains. “We look at what is sold and what needs to be replaced; we look at vignettes that have been on the floor longest, and what we

would like to change up.” Then, the design divas head to Slifer’s 25,000-square-foot warehouse in Eagle to see what has been delivered. From there, they formulate the update. “We sketch a general floor plan while we are at the warehouse so we can get a visual of what we are pulling,” says Lagace. “Until the end of the day, we pull art and accessories that will complement and complete

Dark beams provide a semi-retro look, but the new furniture is both hip and fun.

Townhomes in West Vail recently received an interior upgrade, all in the hands of Slifer Designs. The residence was built in the 1970s, and the clients wanted the full remodel to keep some of the home’s sentimentality intact, including some of the space’s original vibe, artwork and memorabilia. At the same time, they wanted

20

to bring in a more modern style, lightness and comfort, and to make the small space more functional. “They’ve had this townhome in the family for years, and wanted to update, but keep part of the nostalgia alive,” explains Francis Karsh, lead designer for the project. “So we worked with original dark beams and posts and kept a semi-retro look, but made it current, incorporating some industrial

elements and modern pieces.” The clients wanted the space to feel fun, with bright use of color — like the lime greens and bright oranges that seeped into 1970s, but with a style that could stand alongside organic materials and wood furniture. The wood table in the dining room from Environment Furniture adds a rustic edge to the hip complements around it, and the round chair in a fun

in the growing season, May is a great time of the year to integrate exciting structural features such as arches, trellises, pergolas or even a gazebo into your garden or landscape. Each of these features can support a variety of perennial vines that will come

back each summer season and continue to mature over time. Vines offer vertical interest and color to a landscape, and they can also provide cover, shade, and privacy when trained to grow on an appropriate support. Besides offering vines a place to climb, the structures on which they grow can add architectural character to an

outdoor space. A carefully placed trellis or arch can serve as a dividing space or entryway from one area of a landscape to the next in the same way that a doorway divides the rooms in a home. In the summertime, vines growing on trellises and arches can have showy, beautiful blooms, but even in the winter months, the twisting woody

stems that are characteristic of some vines will continue to offer visual interest even as snows blanket the ground. A pergola is a structural garden feature that can form a shaded walkway or sitting area, usually by means of vertical pillars that support crossbeams and open lattice. While a pergola is often an open structure placed along

a walkway, a gazebo functions more like an outdoor room with a roof overhead. Gazebos can be designed with lattice features or railings on which vines can be trained to grow. While it may take years for vines to mature and twist themselves around a pergola or gazebo, the result is a stunning, life-wrapped structure that can be a place for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Climbing Vines for Mountain Landscapes When choosing perennial vines that will grow well on a structural feature in your garden or landscape, consider location, aspect, and ongoing maintenance needs. These three climbing plants, which are hardy throughout the Vail Valley, can be planted in earlyto mid-June, or any time during

the summer following the last frost. So spend some time in May getting support structures in place, and then make plans to train these climbers to grow on them this summer: CLEMATIS Clematis comes in many varieties and can produce an explosion of summer blooms that vary in color depending on the plant. Blooms can be purple, pink, blue, white, red, or rose; clematis vines may require two seasons before they get established and begin blooming. But once they do, you’ll be thankful for your patience. Clematis grows well in rich soil and in areas that receive partial shade to full sun, but be sure to keep roots cool by adding mulch around the base of the plant.

Virginia Creeper blazes red in the fall.

VIRGINIA CREEPER The Virginia creeper is a climbing vine that can grow upwards of 50 feet over time, and it has a seasonal dynamic that’s appreciated in this area with only a few other exciting bursts of autumnal color. The plant’s bright green leaves turn brilliant shades of red and orange in the fall. The Virginia creeper also has woody stems that will thicken over time and provide winter interest. Virginia creeper does best and puts on its most spectacular scarlet autumn transformation when it’s grown in full sun, but it can also grow in the shade. The Virginia creeper’s persistent blue-black berries attract birds to make your garden a more social space.

Honeysuckle smells delicious when it’s in bloom.

HONEYSUCKLE VINE IS KNOWN FOR ITS FRAGRANT BLOOMS AND ITS ABILITY TO ATTRACT HUMMINGBIRDS, HAWK MOTHS AND BEES.” HONEYSUCKLE VINE Honeysuckle vine is known for its fragrant blooms and its ability to attract hummingbirds, hawk moths and bees. Honeysuckle varieties bloom in red, yellow, pink, white, and orange, among other colors. Once established, honeysuckle vines often require less watering than others, and they can grow in full sun to partial shade. Like the Virginia creeper, honeysuckle vines also have woody stems. Before planting these climbing vines or others including climbing roses, amend soil if necessary to

ensure nutrient-rich conditions. Most perennial vines grow best in soil that’s enriched with compost and well drained. When planting, dig a planting hole as deep as the plant’s root ball and two to three times as wide. Add a layer of mulch at the base of the plant to protect the crown and to insulate the soil. Water new plants regularly, and then water as needed. Finally, sit back and enjoy while these vines twist and twine their way to embellishing your landscape this summer and in the years to come.

The activities and events planned at this facility, many of them at no charge, have not only served to create a real sense of community but also to present many opportunities for families to make some memories. And it’s great to be a kid at Vail Cascade, with events such asopen gym/basketball at the area club, s’mores and hot cocoa at the hotel fire pit, movie and pizza night at Aria Club, balloon magic with Pirate Jack, fairy face painting, tennis lessons, dive-in movie at the hotel pool, to name but a few. Of course the adults have not been left out. The annual brewmasters weekend with samplings from local breweries in Colorado has everyone smacking their lips. There are fly casting clinics,

bike rentals, Charter Sports for a little shopping, live music, and there is even an on-site wedding specialist to handle every aspect of one’s upcoming nuptials. The awarding-winning Aria Athletic Club & Spa is one of the shining stars of Cascade Village. With a 78,000-squarefoot health and wellness center, it appeals to those who are looking for a good workout or to those who just wish to be pampered. The valley’s largest — and some consider the most comprehensive — fitness and athletic facility presents indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a heated outdoor saline swimming pool, sun deck and hot tub, private indoor hot tubs for men and women, squash and racquetball courts, a basketball

And the 10,000-square-foot spa and sanctuary is a rejuvenating retreat that imparts pampering for mind, body and soul. And an exceptional bonus for Aria members and guests: complete access to all of the Cascade Resort amenities, including the outdoor pool where sunbathers can relax to the sounds of Gore Creek rushing past. (Many of the programs and activities in the village use one another’s venues.) Cascade Village also boasts a state-of-the-art Conference Center that is 45,000 square feet and offers flexible meeting

space with boardrooms and ballrooms and includes outdoor venues in a spectacular setting overlooking Vail Mountain and Gore Creek. Gore Range Hall, at 19,234 square feet, is the largest meeting area in the Vail area, and it can accommodate 900 people. Guests and residents alike enjoy the quiet, lush setting of Cascade Village, nestled along the cascading Gore Creek. With direct neighborhood access during ski season as well as the other amenities now being hosted in the vicinity, the value of this community has only increased. With a goal of making Cascade Village a destination vacation location as well as a desirable place to set down roots — it appears that this is a mission accomplished.

has a rich history dating back to 1896. The only dairy farm of note in Eagle Valley was in Edwards on what today is known as Creamery Ranch. James Norgaard, a naturalized citizen in 1880, homesteaded in Gypsum. He built a church that is still standing, planted spruce seedlings along his “ditch,” now known as Valley Road, started a sawmill and began farming. He moved his herd to Creamery Ranch and

38

built a dairy farm, and his family maintained the herd until the early 1950s. Early homestead remains still dot the landscape. The lots at Creamery Ranch are rich with history and the integrity of the early American West has been maintained to the present. The native grasses, rolling hills, groves of aspen and large cottonwood trees pervade throughout the open, private and beautiful meadowland. Surrounded by spectacular views of the Sawatch Ranch

and New York Mountain, 20 homesites on 143 acres enjoy the privacy of this special, secluded valley. The low-density housing is maintained with over 80 acres dedicated to common open space. This open space provides a buffer between homesites and establishes a strong landscape theme that re-creates the wideopen feeling of the old west. Today, the unique element of this extraordinary area is that these private and quiet homesites are just 1.5 miles

from the amenities of Edwards and access to I-70 — five more minutes down the road and residents are at the Arrowhead or Beaver Creek ski lifts! In this sought-after gated community desirable land is scarce. Homesites with an exquisite, private environment; splendid views; and such convenient access to amenities, activities, schools and services are rare. rare opportunity to have it all. Mike Suman, whose reputation precedes him, completed architectural conceptual designs of a home on this homesite. Mike was one of the principle architects of Solaris in Vail Village. These designs can be modified or serve as a blueprint for your dream home. He has determined much of the foundation qualities for building on this property. The best view corridors have been

determined, the best angles to capture the greatest natural light, and because the lot is flat building poses no major obstacles as in many areas of the Valley. As the owner says, “455 Old Creamery Road was going to save us hundreds of thousands of dollars on the driveway and engineering. It also removes many of the architectural constraints of building a house into a hillside. And our lot, in particular, allows for an

incredible amount of privacy for the southern exposure.” This information is particularly important, recommending that buyers consider the costs of building a home at any lot they view. An inexpensive lot on the side of a hill becomes much more expensive when you have to build foundations and driveways. It is helpful to team with an architect and builder when selecting a lot because of the many factors that go into building in the mountains. An appropriate homesite can minimalize building costs and place stress at a minimum. Finding a homesite that meets your needs of privacy, beauty,

and views — all in a convenient location — is a rarity. 455 Old Creamery Road is the best of all options with a flat, buildable lot in an enviable location that few can enjoy. Welcome to the gated community of Creamery Ranch! Contact Chadd Ziegler for more information about how this Creamery Ranch lot could fit into your lifestyle.

MARKET REPORT

BY THE NUMBERS

Go with the Flow As summer approaches, the local real estate selling season gains momentum

A

s w e d o g pa d d l e

through the “slow” season here in the Vail Valley, our attention turns to the water running through every part of our community. Why? Because the run-off is truly amazing, the power that it generates leaves us in awe every year as we watch it swell. From the waterfalls and creeks to the Eagle River and the Colorado River, this everchanging body of water attracts us. We want to float in it, fish in it, camp next to it, ride its rapids and play in its eddies. It feeds the natural surroundings, the foliage, fish, bugs and wildlife, not to mention those of us who make a living on it and in it. Come to think of it, the river is a perfect example of how real estate trends in this Rocky Mountain area flow. The little creeks that feed into the bigger rivers are our unique neighborhoods that feed into our overarching valley community. The market picks up raging momentum and then eddies out, sometimes to a standstill. Then, picks up again. We are mesmerized by it especially when we are close to it, for example, buying or selling a house. When we find the perfect home, we dive in. Or, when we sell, it gives us the opportunity to float into something bigger or smaller, depending on our needs, but the point is, it’s constantly flowing. First Quarter Flow As winter moves into spring at the close of our first quarter, the numbers reveal where the headwaters of our real estate market are: the resorts. And, for the most part, the rest of the valley should pick up momentum

40

VAIL VALLEY HOME | MAY 2015

moving west or downhill, much like our creeks and rivers. The resort markets of Vail and Beaver Creek have produced some of the highest increases in average sales cost as well as volume. This is evidenced in the number of closing sales. As we roll into our summer selling season, down valley or the western communities will continue picking up speed. Continued strength in the

broader economic landscape coupled with strong stock market returns support the pricing increase in the high-end resort inventory. Vacation and second homeowner customers have kept the luxury market active and competitive. Wealth springs — it’s a small but powerful starting point. Vail Board of REALTORS® past board chair, Matthew

Blake, observes, “Overall, the opportunity for increased growth in sales, continued strength in average price and percentage of sale to list price bodes well for our market. We are seeing this everywhere from the absorption of inventory within new condo developments in Vail and LionsHead Village to sales in mid and down-valley markets. “As the ski season transitions

MARKET REPORT

into late spring/early summer, REALTORS, buyers and sellers can expect an active, exciting flow through the selling season. Many are hopeful for a greater selection of inventory coupled with strong buyer demand among nearly all property types.” In other words, hop in the raft we have the potential for a wild ride this summer. And yes, there will be areas that don’t have the same power as others. But that doesn’t mean they won’t pick up speed at some point, you never know. It truly is fascinating to watch. Take a Dip Just like the snow attracts a certain type of visitor and homeowner, so does the water. While many folks come for the snow sports, others come to fish, float and ride the rapids. Those same people have been coming here for years, taking a dip in our exciting lifestyle. Increasingly, these people are

choosing to make the Vail Valley their home — diving in to our refreshing approach to life. What was once a portfolio investment is now shifting toward a lifestyle investment thanks to the increased, consistent promotion of our summer recreation and events. At one point our motto was, “We come for the winters and stay for the summers.” Now, we come for the summers. Corey Lamothe, VBR board member discusses the current market in the mid-level price range, “Right now, the market under $700,000 is raging as evidenced by the low inventory. I have clients from Denver who are actively looking to incorporate the mountain lifestyle into their future. Many have been researching the market for years and realize that now is a great time to make their goals a reality. It’s like the run off, picking up speed. In my opinion, this will affect the market from the resorts moving

BUYERS AND SELLERS CAN EXPECT AN ACTIVE, EXCITING FLOW THROUGH THE SELLING SEASON.” west, properties will keep moving quickly. In addition, the high cost of rentals means it’s more financially viable to own rather than rent in this market niche.” Lamothe continues, “I also have local clients who are ready to upgrade in size and quality of their property, which requires market knowledge, understanding and expertise — almost like a river guide taking you through the ups and downs of each wave train, as neighborhoods have their differences. It is noticeable that as the current continues westward so do buyers looking for lifestyle and increased, yearround recreational accessibility.” The first quarter numbers

continue to support a seller’s market despite a continued inventory challenge. Although a lack of inventory is not a horrible thing, it has spurred an increase in new construction, which boosts our local economy — a healthy sign. The unique geography, diverse real estate inventory and combination of resort and residential property types keep the Vail Valley afloat. In other words, keep paddling the water will continue to change so enjoy the ride. While many people think of spring cleaning as simply clearing cobwebs and dust, the tradition can renew more than just a home. Unused, worn-out items, unorganized stacks of “important” papers and dirty windows subtly create stress; the brain registers “work to be done,” which can lead to emotional wear and tear; it’s like a heavily weighing “to do list,” and the low-grade, chronic stress it causes can actually lead to illness or a sense of dis-ease. Spring cleaning offers relief from this kind of pressure and can actually refresh your mind, body and spirit, as you literally see more clearly out clean windows and contribute to a sense of ease and organization by filing, or recycling, stacks of papers. “By cleaning out the clutter and debris that has gathered over the fall and winter, it creates a space for the new to come in and re-energize your mind, body and soul,” says Karen Petersen, owner of Black Diamond Realty in Vail and Seeking Sanctuaries, a feng shui business. She gives a simple example of a closet jammed with clothing.

SIMPLY FOLLOW THE IMPETUS SPRING USHERS IN TO CLEAN AND CLEAR, AND LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY BRING MORE SPACIOUSNESS INTO YOUR HOME.”

Throw the clutter out, and make room for spring’s natural lightening of the spirit. Sometimes giving a deep clean to a space has as much impact as redecorating.

“You cannot even see what is in there when you go to select something to wear,” she says. “The mind functions in a capacity of ‘same old, same old’ and doesn’t search for something new and interesting, or fun, to wear. This, in turn, affects your spirit; no new juice to get inspired by.” And that’s just one way your home environment reflects — and affects — your inner self. “If you want to change your inner self, change your outer environment, and watch how your inner world starts changing, too,” Petersen says. EMBRACE RENEWAL Spring cleaning has long been a ritual, dating back to various ancient cultures, including the Jewish, Iranian and Chinese. 46

VAIL VALLEY HOME | MAY 2015

Jews viewed Passover as a time of house cleaning, in which they scoured their homes, partially to ensure no leavened bread (made with a rising agent such as yeast) lingered in their homes; they considered even crumbs of the bread an affront to God. On the first day of spring, Iranians practiced “khoonen tekouni,” which translates to “shaking the house.” The Chinese welcomed the new year by sweeping their homes of bad luck they believed might have accumulated throughout the previous year. In North America, the custom took root before the invention of vacuum cleaners, because spring was the best time to open windows and doors and sweep out dust, before warm temperatures drew in too many insects. Physiologically speaking, as daylight grows, increased sunlight signals the pineal gland to produce less melatonin, giving us a boost of

energy to clean out accumulations of dust, dirt and unused stuff. In addition, aspens bud and green begins to sprout, providing yet another nudge to renew and refresh our own environment, and along with it, our minds and spirit. “Spring is a time of awakening and a time of growth,” Petersen says. “We have a sense of excitement as nature returns to life again.” WHERE TO STAR T Spring cleaning can feel overwhelming, especially in large homes, or those that haven’t been organized for a while. So, where do you start? “Spring cleaning should begin as soon as you feel the inspiration to do it, but if the inspiration never comes, then put a date on your calendar to create a free weekend and do it,” Petersen says, adding: “You’ll be glad you did. It feels so good when it is done.” She suggests tackling the most cluttered areas — and not stopping until they’re clear. That way, you’ll see progress, which will motivate you even more. However, if the job feels like too much of a burden, you can always hire a professional organizer. WAYS TO REJUVENATE In addition to cleaning and decluttering, there are plenty of ways to refresh your home, and with it, your mind, body and spirit. Give your home a decorative facelift by adding accents that stimulate your senses. Each element you add should bring some kind of joy, relaxation or other supportive feeling into your space. For example, a simple wreath or colorful decoration on the front door can welcome change. A babbling water fountain near the entry adds a feeling of fluidity and serenity. Hanging cut glass, crystals or wind chimes near windows refract rainbows of light and arouse the sense of hearing, just as birds chirping outside do. And, speaking of birds, a feeder outside a kitchen or living room window invites the awareness of flight-full life force into your day.

Stir your sense of smell by burning candles or incense, which encourages peaceful feelings. Houseplants also generate vitality in homes. Prune any dead leaves, and keep plants well fed and watered. Vail and Denver interior designer Nancy Sanford, owner of Nancy Sanford Interior Design, recommends bamboo, palms, rubber plants, dracaena, ivy and ficus. In addition to purifying indoor air, these plants add texture and enhance feelings of softness and vitality. Spring is also the perfect time to plant kitchen herbs like lavender, a scent that promotes peaceful feelings. It’s also a great time to arrange freshcut flowers, in anticipation of summer blooms. A HOLISTIC CLEANING Eastern traditions refer to the art of cleaning, decluttering, adding color and placing décor properly as feng shui. Although feng shui is a very complex system, in general, it refers to arranging surroundings “to attract positive life energy, or chi, so that it flows smoothly, unblocking any obstructions in your body and environment,” Sanford says. “Feng shui

BY CLEANING OUT THE CLUTTER AND DEBRIS THAT HAS GATHERED OVER THE FALL AND WINTER, IT CREATES A SPACE FOR THE NEW TO COME IN AND RE-ENERGIZE YOUR MIND, BODY AND SOUL.”

evolved from the theory that people are affected, for better or worse, by their surroundings.” Cluttered homes prevent energy from properly flowing, according to feng shui, whereas clean, clear spaces promote harmony. “Our homes are alive,” Petersen says, explaining, “each molecule of creation … is alive and filled with life force energy.” The Taoist approach reminds us: “all is one.” “At its essence, feng shui is about living consciously and enjoying the highest quality of life force possible,” Petersen says. Fortunately, you don’t need to study the intricacies of the ancient Chinese art of feng shui, or even scout for crumbs of leavened bread. Simply follow the impetus spring ushers in to clean and clear, and literally and figuratively bring more spaciousness into your home. As you declutter, remove anything you don’t love, and add items that spark joy, peace and harmony. Chances are, you’ll feel lighter, brighter and more energized, as your refreshed outer environment helps ease mental stress related to bygone clutter and begins to reawaken your body, mind and spirit to new possibilities. HOW TO MAKE YOUR MASSIVE DUST REMOVAL LESS OF A CHORE AND FIT IT INTO AN ALREADYBUSY LIFE by SHAUNA FARNELL

SPRING INTO CLEAN

O

h my, is that a rodent in the corner?

No … just a gigantic dust ball. They seem to be everywhere this time of year, and the need to clean may be pressing on your conscience. It’s spring after all, time to open the windows, let your home breathe and clear out the winter grime.

The only thing is, how are you supposed to find time for a thorough round of spring cleaning? You’ve already got a full plate. The good news is that you don’t have to do it all at once. “Deep cleaning takes time. It takes hours. I’d say you need 15 to 20 hours to thoroughly, deeply clean a 1,500 square foot home,” says Tim Szurgot (aka Captain Vacuum), founder and operator of Organic Housekeepers. “I don’t want to blow a whole beautiful spring day inside cleaning. It’s best to stay on top of it all the time and chip away.” REMOVE YOUR SHOES While spring is historically the most popular time for your big clean out and clear out, in the mountains, homes typically get dustier in the summer when windows are open and pollen is blowing in. During winter, there is still a substantial build up of cave-like grime, not to mention the potential mess that comes with clopping in and out of the house with wet, muddy feet. “The best way to keep your house clean is to take your shoes off,” Szurgot says. “Even if it’s not muddy footprints, you have no idea how many pollutants, chemicals, dirt and oils you put in your floor and carpet by wearing shoes in the house. Get a pair of slippers or house shoes. In the winter, it’s a different kind of dust that builds in the house — it’s more like a hairball versus the environmental dust that comes in the summer. The entryway of the home is one of the first things to clean in the spring — the place where the shoes and jackets are. That area gets dirtier than any other in the winter, and the dirt that piles up there comes into the rest of the house.”

DO ONE ROOM AT A TIME, KEEP PRODUCTS HANDY It’s not a bad idea to make a list of areas of the home that need cleaning and rather than tackling them all at once, hit them individually when you have a window of time, making sure to have the necessary cleaning supplies close at hand. “I like to have all of my cleaning products under the sink. If I’m in the bathroom brushing

my teeth and I notice, ‘Oh, the sink’s dirty,’ Boom, I can clean it right then. I like to clean the shower when I’m in the shower,” Szurgot says. “Having rags around with white distilled vinegar, if I look up at the exhaust fan, I can reach up and wipe it down.” If you are at a loss to come up with a thorough roundup of what needs cleaning this spring, Organic Housekeepers’ website has a deep cleaning checklist isolating cleaning specifics for specific areas of the home. Beyond vacuuming, dusting, cleaning toilet bowls, etc., deep cleaning involves general duties such as vacuuming furniture, fireplaces and window treatments, actually mov-

ing furniture and appliances to clean behind them, wiping down picture frames and glass, cleaning light fixtures, wiping down walls and treating leather furniture. TIME IN THE KITCHEN For a thorough clean, the kitchen is the area of the house where you can expect to spend the most time. It includes cleaning the oven and stove and removing all dishes and kitchenware from cabinets to clean each piece and wipe down drawers and cabinet interiors. As a rule of thumb — especially if you’re busy — it’s best not to wait until the massive spring clean to tackle some of the kitchen upkeep. “A tiny kitchen takes about 10 hours to get everything clean,” Szurgot says. “You don’t want to wait until once a year or twice a year to clean behind your fridge or your oven.”

The best cleaning tool is “elbow grease.” But don’t hesitate to add some vinegar and baking soda to your efforts.

IF I’M IN THE BATHROOM BRUSHING MY TEETH AND I NOTICE, ‘OH, THE SINK’S DIRTY,’ BOOM, I CAN CLEAN IT RIGHT THEN. I LIKE TO CLEAN THE SHOWER WHEN I’M IN THE SHOWER.” CAPITALIZING ON CLOSETS AND CUBBIES During the wardrobe and equipment transition that inevitably takes place in the spring time — something you will obviously find time to do regardless of how busy you are, unless you plan to stare at your skis all summer or run around in wooly boots in July — there is a prime opportunity to clean those oft-forgotten storage spaces where bikes and bikinis are kept. “Putting the ski gear away and pulling out the bike gear, moving all that stuff — it’s a good time to clean. The garage, too, is another place that needs cleaning.

Over the winter, it’s gathering up all the mag chloride —you’re dragging all of that through the house,” Szurgot says. It’s also a prime time to clean your decks, patios and grills — they’ve been outside getting dirty all winter, so they’re always on the spring-cleaning list. MORE CLEANING TIPS FOR SPRING BUSYBODIES The Globe and Mail recently pointed out common mistakes made while cleaning, all of which are even more likely when you’re trying to juggle a spring clean with all of your other responsibilities.

• For stains, people often try to scrub them out, when really soaking them in soda water and blotting them will do the trick. Szurgot also recommends “letting the product do the cleaning” and leaving toilet bowl and tub cleaner on the porcelain overnight to soak, as well as oven cleaner on for a few hours, to ensure the grease lifts off more easily. As for products, Szurgot recommends a vegetable-based line called Bon Ami. • Wear gloves. Even if you’re

using more natural products, they’re still hard on the hands. • Vacuum baseboards before wiping, and vacuum parallel to them so as not to shove dust and dirt underneath. Make sure you have a decent vacuum that’s picking up dirt and not just moving it around. • Don’t forget to clean in high places. Cobwebs gather in upper corners, and fans grow a thick coat of dust over the winter.
