DEAR FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, FELLOW NEWS JUNKIES, LOVERS OF KNOWLEDGE AND LIFELONG LEARNERS: I’m just going to go ahead and say it, this past winter was my favorite season of Vail Symposium programming yet. We got to learn about what it’s like to freedive with sperm whales from “Deep” author James Nestor, we got to start a conversation in our community about the impact media messaging can have on body image and we got to discuss the effectiveness of nonviolent conflict resolution around the world with brilliant University of Denver professor and co-author of “Why Civil Disobedience Works” Erica Chenoweth. This winter was a pure celebration of learning, of sharing ideas, discussing new topics and starting conversations. I loved every minute of it. More than that, I loved sharing it with you. You, our attendees, volunteers, donors and supporters, inspire me. You inspire me with the questions you ask our speakers, you inspire me with your ideas for future programs and you inspire me with your passion for learning and your enthusiasm for the Vail Symposium. We’re going to continue to celebrate our shared love of learning this summer with a lineup of lectures, workshops and film screenings that just might have me claiming it as my new favorite when all is said and done. So let’s do this, let’s dive in and learn something new. Let’s get excited about coming together to discuss issues we care about and to share our thoughts, opinions and passions with our fellow community members. As always, don’t hesitate to give me a shout to share your feedback, thoughts and ideas. Call me at 970-476-0954 or shoot me an email at tracey@vailsymposium.org. I look forward to hearing from you, to seeing you at a program soon and to continuing to be inspired by you! With warmest regards,
Tracey Flower executive director 2
AS WE MAKE OUR WAY AROUND THE SUN, WE COME TO YET ANOTHER SEASON. The days grow long, luxurious and warm. Our horizons and our thoughts expand. We think about possibilities that the winter has contracted. Our muse takes hold of us in delightful and unexpected ways. Coming off our successful and thoughtprovoking winter offerings, summer compels a different diet and a perhaps a little meatier palate. And, in hopes of engaging you, we offer you an tempting mix, a menu for the imagination and the mind. This summer season, we will explore the world of education, digging in with an anthropologist’s zeal to the pros and cons of the Common Core Standards. We will consider the always-volatile Middle East, discuss the Genetic Frontier, pull back the curtain on climate change and continue our Living At Your Peak Consciousness Series exploring “Inner Guidance,” spirituality and other aspects of our transcendent lives. We will engage you with our film series, wilderness program and arts and culture. We will embellish your summer with our distinguished roster of thinkers, speakers and writers, and compliment the long days on your bike or on the trials with a little thinking music for the soul. We think you will agree that we have “upped our game” over the past several seasons and, after 44 years, have kept the Vail Symposium vital and engaged. We can hardly wait to get started with you on this summer’s journey! Join us. Think with us. Engage with us. Together we will expand our summer vistas by conversation, community and consideration. And by opening up new worlds to reason and to thought. Grab a chair. We’re anxious to get started. We are looking forward to seeing you there. With all best wishes,
Rohn K. Robbins chairman, board of directors

Dr. Julie Beischel followed Dr. Alexander in the second week of the spring Consciousness Series for a scientific look at after-life communications, giving attendees a chance to interact with lab tested mediums. Jeff Olsen concluded the series, and delivered a tear-jerking, fromthe-heart talk that inspired attendees to remember to choose joy in their own lives.
Speaking Financially with Esther George The season concluded with a very special fireside chat between Richard Bard and Esther George, President and CEO of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank. THE FUTURE OF SOLAR ENERGY PROGRAMS
Heather Bailey, John Jimison, Laura Farris & Mark Simmons Moderated by Rohn Robbin | Hot Topics Panel Series
M O N DAY
No longer a new or idealistic technology, solar energy has become a very achievable means of meeting society’s energy demands. Prices of solar photovoltaic systems have declined by almost 50% since 2010. By 2014, after investing $212 million, Colorado ranked 8th in the country in solar capacity with enough of the green energy to power 76,000 homes. As rapidly as green energy markets are growing and changing, states, towns and even individuals must adapt to the changing conditions. This panel will focus on government regulations and policies that impact solar energy and discuss what communities and individuals can do to consider solar energy additions. John Jimison is the Managing Director of the Energy Future Coalition. He has also served as Senior Counsel to the Energy and Commerce Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Heather Bailey is the Executive Director of Energy Strategy and Electric Utility Development and helps to manage Boulder’s Energy Future project. Mark Simmons has been involved with more 520 solar projects, including the Town of Breckenridge, Denver Botanic Gardens, Red Robin Restaurants, Oppenheimer Funds in Centennial and First National Bank in Boulder. Laura Farris is the Climate Change Coordinator for the EPA Region 8 in Denver, Colorado.

CURATORIAL ENTREPRENEUR: THE MAKING OF MAJOR ART EXHIBITIONS Dr. Timothy J. Standring | Arts and Culture Series
M O N DAY
Before the exhibit Wyeth: Andrew and Jamie in the Studio opens at the Denver Art Museum in November of 2015, the Vail Symposium presents Dr. Timothy J. Standring in a conversation with Bill Rey to offer rare insight on the remarkable roles a curator assumes when undertaking major exhibition projects. As diplomat, negotiator, mediator, writer, object hunter and connoisseur, the curator’s quest plunges deep into the underbelly of the art world. Dr. Standring will reveal the important activities that underscore the inception, implementation and assembly of exhibitions whose brief stints are often years in the making. Dr. Standring is the Gates Foundation Curator of Painting & Sculpture at the Denver Art Museum. In addition to the Becoming Van Gogh exhibition that attracted over 250,000 visitors after it opened in Denver in October 2012, Dr. Standring has curated ten other shows at the Denver Art Museum, including Inspiring Impressionism, Sargent and Italy, The Phillips Collection and European Masterpieces. The major challenge faced by all curators is to sustain the underlying thesis of the exhibition. Sharing his stories as a prominent American curator, Dr. Standring will spell out the rarely-heard but often fierce and gritty details behind such beautiful exhibitions. Sponsored by Claggett/Rey Gallery.

T H U R S D AY
In addition to bigger, faster and stronger, recent findings and secrets of sports nutrition are spilling over into topics of health, energy, happiness, vitality, longevity and preventative wellness. As nutritionists and physiologists explore athletic performance, they have found that the food we fuel our bodies with has a tremendous impact not only in our sports performance, but also on our wellbeing. The panelists will break down these discoveries and provide the necessary knowledge to build a type of diet that allows athletes and everyone else to reach their peak performance and create a healthier relationship with food. ARE WE PART OF A COSMIC DESIGN? Elizabeth and Neil Carman | Living At Your Peak Consciousness Series Sharing a compilation of stories that investigate pre-birth communication and spiritual amnesia, authors Elizabeth and Neil Carman shed light on how the life of the Soul in the human body is only part of our experience in what could be a multi-dimensional universe. The Carmans go step-by-step uncovering evidence of memory at an even earlier stage: from people with memories of birth, wombtime and conception. They discuss those who recall a state of being, not just before birth, but before identifying with a human body – an existence as pure Soul – and how this increased awareness can fill a life with gratitude, purpose and comfort. Elizabeth Carman, Ph.D and Neil Carman, Ph.D. are the authors of Cosmic Cradle. HOMO SAPIENS 2.0: G E N E T I C E N H A N C E M E N T, E T H I C S , AND THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY Jamie Metzl | Hot Topics Series
M O N DAY
After 250,000 years of evolution, our species is on the verge of taking active control of our genetics. The genetic engineering revolution will not only transform our reproduction process, it will also allow us to eliminate genetic diseases which have plagued our ancestors for millennia, and to select or even engineer the traits of our children. The genetics revolution will be the greatest opportunity of our era, and also the greatest challenge. Technology and national security expert Jamie Metzl has testified before Congress, written widely on these issues and joins the Symposium to discuss this important topic being largely ignored by the global media. Metzl is a Senior Fellow for Technology and National Security at the Atlantic Council. He has served on the US National Security Council, State Department Senate Foreign Relations Committee and with the United Nations in Cambodia. A regular guest on national and international media, he is the author of a history of the Cambodian genocide and the novel The Depths of the Sea. His most recent work, Genesis Code: A Thriller of the Near Future, which will be discussed during this program.

”WE ARE THE ONES” Michael Skinner and Jon Michael Shink Vail Symposium Film Series
WEDNESDAY
This is the first installment of this summer’s three-part film series. We are the Ones is a documentary by Michael Skinner and Jon Michael Shink that follows three surgeons through a firestorm of tribal violence as they themselves fight to prevent illness and mend wounds in the world’s newest country of South Sudan. Francis grew up with little schooling during the Sudanese Civil War. Ajak is a Lost Boy who has returned to the tribe he fled as a child. Both men are protégés of Glenn, a grizzled, but brilliant american surgeon. After long-running tribal divides erupt into violent raids that threaten their villages and clinics, these men embark on a journey to protect their patients and bring peace to their people. From inside the operating rooms to intimate visits with victims of tribal violence, We are the Ones blends vérité techniques with cinematic visuals to bring the audience a visceral front line account of the constant war between life and death in South Sudan. We are the Ones won the Special Hero Award at the My Hero Film Festival in 2014. Both producers will be on hand to answer questions following the screening of the documentary. The Vail Symposium recommends parental guidance for this film. Film Run Time: 61 min. Presented in partnership with Vail Film Festival. *Please note: Little Beach Park is an outdoor venue. "THIS ISN’T FUNNY” Paul Ashton and Katie Page | Vail Symposium Film Series
WEDNESDAY
This is the second installment of this summer’s three-part film series. Meeting the right person at the wrong time can be the best thing that ever happened to you. Such is the premise of This Isn’t Funny, an independent comedy that takes an honest, sharply observed look at meeting the right person at a time in your life when you just don’t know what to do with it. The comedy directed by Paul Ashton was selected at the 2015 Newport Beach Film Festival, 2015 Dallas International Film Festival and Los Angeles Comedy Festival. Interspersed with live standup comedy, this indie film provides a fresh, true-to-life love story, paying in laughs and tears with depth, insight and commentary on what relationships are like in today’s ever-changing world. Ashton, the film's director and writer, along with Katie Page, a co-writer, will speak about the making of the film following the screening. Vail Symposium recommends this film for a mature audience. Film Run Time: 86 min. Presented in partnership with Vail Film Festival. *Please note: Little Beach Park is an outdoor venue. Come prepared with blankets and layers. “A L L T H E T I M E I N T H E WO R L D ” Suzanne Crocker | Vail Symposium Film Series
WEDNESDAY
In the third installment of the summer’s three-part film series, All the Time in the World follows a family of five in search of a new perspective as they abandon the comforts of home to live remotely in the raw Yukon Wilderness. The parents of three young children (ages 10, 8, & 4) decide to leave their jobs and spend nine months living in a small cabin with no road access, no electricity, no running water, no internet, no TV nor phone and most importantly, no clocks or watches. Filmed over nine months, off the grid, without external crew, and featuring the unique perspectives of the children, All the Time in the World explores the theme of disconnecting from our hectic and technology-laden lives in order to reconnect with ourselves, each other and our natural environment. This film has been chosen as “Best of the Festival” at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival and “Audience Choice Award for Most Popular Canadian Documentary” at the 2014 Vancouver International Film Festival. Suzanne Crocker, the film’s Director, Producer, and Cinematographer, will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions following the screening of the documentary. The Vail Symposium recommends this film for all audiences. Film Run Time: 89 min. Presented in partnership with Vail Film Festival. *Please note: Little Beach Park is an outdoor venue. LOCAL IMPACT OF THE USDA FOREST SERVICE Leslie Weldon | Hot Topics Series
T H U R S D AY
Federal forest management dates back to 1876, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture set out to assess the quality of forests in the United States. In 1891, Congress passed the Forest Reserve Act authorizing presidents to designate public lands in the West into “Forest Reserves.” In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt transferred the care of these forests to a new office within the Department of Agriculture – the U.S. Forest Service. The livelihoods of those living in Vail depends upon the vitality of the surrounding nature and the vivacity of the National Forest System. Leslie Weldon is the appointed Deputy Chief for the National Forest System with the U.S. Forest Service. She will discuss the agency’s recent challenges and initiatives to preserve and restore these nationally treasured lands while tying in the agency’s goals to local initiatives such as the restoration of the headwaters of the Eagle River at Camp Hale. Leslie’s 30-year career with the Forest Service began as a summer hire on the Mount BakerSnoqualmie National Forest in Washington fighting fires and surveying wildlife. She has held regional and national biologist positions, as Liaison to the U.S. Army and as Executive Policy Assistant to former Forest Service Chief Michael Dombeck. As Deputy Chief of the National Forest System, Weldon manages projects for 155 national forests and 20 grasslands in the United States. Presented in partnership with Walking Mountains Science Center.

SPEAKERS IN THE SCHOOLS
O V E R T H E W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 S E A S O N , T H E VA I L S Y M P O S I U M B R O U G H T B A C K A CHERISHED COMMUNITY PROGRAM – SPEAKERS IN THE SCHOOLS.
Speakers in the Schools brings select visiting Vail Symposium authors, adventurers, politicians and more to local classrooms, allowing students the opportunity to listen, learn about the world and walk away feeling inspired. Handpicked, each of the speakers from the Symposium’s Winter 2015 Unlimited Adventure series took on the adventure of sharing their exhilarating outdoor stories with 7th and 8th grade science students at Eagle County Charter Academy (ECCA). Zak Podmore described his experience following the Colorado River from its source to the sea, freediver James Nestor spoke of holding his breath for minutes on end while diving hundreds of feet below the ocean surface, Dr. Jon Kedrowski described his experience climbing and skiing the world’s tallest peaks and Jon Turk vividly illustrated the spirit of wilderness. Through tales of adventure, the students were exposed to a range of topics from climate change, geography, filmmaking, current events and cultural diversity. Each of the speakers had an amazing story to tell, and their words fell upon wide eyes of these young science students. One student wrote, “Each of the speakers made me believe that I can follow my dreams and become whatever I want to be.” These presentations provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn from world-class athletes and adventurers in an interactive environment. Michael Moser, an ECCA teacher, stated that this was “an amazing opportunity for students to interact with inspiring figures in our world. The impacts will very likely be lifelong for many. Thanks so much for this unique, powerful opportunity.” The Vail Symposium thanks Liana Moore for her help coordinating Speakers in the Schools, and is pleased to continue this rich tradition. 16

MANY VAIL SYMPOSIUM PROGRAM ATTENDEES SAW A FAMILIAR
face at the registration table this winter. Her name is Susan Emenaker. Susan is originally from Northbrook, Illinois, but moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1983 where she lived for 29 years. She moved to the Vail Valley in 2013 to be closer to family. Susan has degrees in Horticulture and Veterinary Technology, and currently works at the Wildflower Farm in Edwards where she happily and literally gets her hands dirty growing gorgeous plants. Susan became involved with the Vail Symposium through her sister, Deb Robbins. Deb, who is also a stand-out volunteer, had spoken highly of the organization for years. When Susan arrived in the Vail Valley, she joined the roster of highlyappreciated Symposium volunteers. Often, you will see Susan and Deb together, smiles on their faces, welcoming patrons to programs and listening in on the various lectures presented. Of the different series that the Vail Symposium focuses on, Susan prefers the Living At Your Peak Consciousness Series. She attended all of the Consciousness programs this year and her favorite was Choosing Joy after Tragic Loss featuring Jeff Olsen because she believes, “there is more than just this life that we are living. When she's not volunteering for the Vail Symposium or gardening at the Wildflower Farm, you will find Susan reading or learning about the wildlife and plant life in the high country while hiking with her dog, Zinger. If you are ever looking for information on how to grow a gorgeous garden at high altitude, look no further than Susan. Susan hopes that the Symposium can continue providing thought-provoking and educational programs for locals and visitors to the area. She also hopes that students will be encouraged to attend. Susan believes programs such as Your Body, Your Image from the Winter 2015 season will help broaden their horizons. 23

SPOTLIGHT DON ROGERS IS THE TYPE OF GUY WHO CAN PUT PEN TO PAPER.
Literally. He is the current publisher and former editor of the Vail Daily newspaper. In addition to his administrative duties with the publication, he mesmerizes local readers with an introspective column covering evolving topics and maintaining a commanding voice on the ever-changing landscape of the issue at hand. Don says that his education is “always, and ongoing.” He has always had an interest in the programs and mission of the Vail Symposium, which he thinks mirrors that of the Vail Daily. He has now served on the Vail Symposium Board for four years and says each new program he attends is his favorite for the fact that the events constantly give him an opportunity to learn. Don is originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, and spent much of his childhood in Los Angeles. His first job, no joke, was a paper route. He was also a wild land firefighter for most of twenties, worked as a bartender and then as a journalist at papers large and small from California to New York. He decided to come to Vail when his wife, Mary, handed him a Vail Daily advertisement seeking an editor. He has since been in the Vail Valley for 15 years and has grown to love this unique community and its outdoor activities. He was an avid trail runner until an aching knee introduced him to mountain biking. He also enjoys spending time with his family, reading everything in sight and attends as many Vail Symposium programs as possible. In the future, Don would like to see the Symposium “grow the Vail Valley’s intellectual offerings for adults.” 25
