How’s the Market? The Vail Valley’s luxury market continues to gather strength, following a solid summer/fall selling season. Based on numbers provided by the Vail Multiple Listing Service, year-to-date gross sales volume was up 9.7% at the end of the 3rd Quarter for properties listed at $1 million-plus, when compared with 2014. Transaction volume in the high-end also reflected a nice bump in this pricing niche, up 13% over last year. Of note, showing activity continues to be strong as we move through the fall, leading me to believe that we can expect a solid finish to the year.
What does this mean to you?
While raw statistics don’t tell the whole story, they are very indicative of the positive direction of our overall market. The luxury niche tends to set the bar for the rest of the market, lending confidence to those buyers considering different price points from East Vail to Gypsum. If you are thinking about selling, the coming ski season should prove to be a strategic time to bring your property to market, enabling you to take advantage of this momentum and our continued low inventory levels. If buying, I encourage you to work diligently with a skilled broker in identifying those opportunities that best meet your family’s needs. Once you find the ideal home, proceed to make an offer. In the current market, there really is no benefit in waiting.

comfortable with your interior dÊcor? Does the thought of change make your palms sweat? What if I challenged you to think outside of your comfort zone and try something new. This month we are talking about creating drama with the pairing of black and white. Often, I hear people say that black is not inviting, or it’s too cold a color for interior spaces. However, I believe the juxtaposition of black and white gives a rigid-meets-organic feel, maybe even a little like yin and yang. It is a fundamental design combination that works to create visual intensity and intrigue.

modern trend continues to decorate Vail Valley homes, better ergonomics, durable fabrics and unique materials define the latest in furniture design. Cleaner lines, which don’t include as much detail or “overstuffed” furnishings as mountain homes contained a decade ago, are paving the way for modernism. “Pieces of mid-century modern are definitely having their time right now,” says

Yvonne Jacobs, president of Slifer Designs in Edwards. The egg chair is one such element. Originally designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, the chair employs simple, fluid curves, sculpted to ergonomically support the curvatures of the human body. The chairs range in form from hanging egg weaves to grounded acrylics, fiberglass and fabrics. Many furniture manufacturers are creating more modern chairs and sofas with Jacobsen’s — and other mid-century
modernists’ — sleek, ergonomic design in mind, Jacobs says. “There’s a lot more function in the piece when it’s designed, (in addition to) being beautiful,” she says. In keeping with the modern mindset, colors like bright yellow are coming into play, and blue hues, from the dark navy that’s been popular since last season to sea and cornflower blues, maintain their hold on the market. (Of course, color-wise, gray, beige and “greige,” or grayish beige,
furnishings generally mirror today’s overall interior design.) Even leathers are sporting plenty of color, from the usual browns and grays to red and turquoise, says Kathy Peplinski, owner of P. Furniture and Design in Avon. Blends of bonded, or recycled, leather offer a more economical way of achieving a leather look without the high cost. Durable, high quality fabrics have moved from solely outdoor furniture to indoor styles. “Outdoor fabric used to

look like outdoor fabric, but now it’s going into residences with an improved look and feel,” Peplinski says. These days, most consumers can’t easily differentiate between traditional fabrics and the latest high-performance “outdoor” fabrics, except for the fact that the fabrics don’t easily stain. “They’re saturated with nice, bright colors, and you get the textures,” Jacobs says. “They’re not flat anymore, like outdoor fabrics.” While ergonomics and high performance fabrics pay homage to a more modern lifestyle, mountain homes still reflect the natural environment, with unique tables made of natural materials. Live-edge dining room tables showcase the form and movement of a giant tree. Such manufacturers as Home Trends & Design create engineered live-edge tables, as well as completely natural ones;

the true live edges lend more character, but engineered designs don’t crack, and they provide a lower price point. Coffee tables are becoming art pieces in and of themselves. Petrified wood pieces mounted on a chrome base blend mountain and modern, as do wooden slabs with crushed glass embedded on top. The rustic look still resonates in Vail Valley homes, but people are turning to recycled materials, such as old railroad ties or packing crates transformed into tables, then mounted onto stainless steel, chrome or wrought iron. Likewise, the lodge look, with railheads on sofas and chairs, still finds a place among homes when combined with the modern look. Since many second homeowners need plenty of beds for family and friends, sofa sleepers are still very popular, and they’re also much more comfortable. Companies like American Leather offer
seven sizes, from king to cot, and feature high-density foam, Tempur-Pedic or gel mattresses, with absolutely no metal bars or springs. In bedrooms, upholstered, platform beds rule the night; homeowners prefer the clean, metal under mount, free from fluffy, dust-trapping bed skirts. And, many husbands are relieved the old fad of layering a dozen pillows on a made bed every morning has evolved to a simpler, white duvet look, with a colorful throw at the foot of the bed — and perhaps a couple pillows. “People want comfort,” Peplinski says, “comfort, and durable fabrics.”

yellow, and transitioning into December’s glimmering silvers, golds, bright reds, and greens. Thanksgiving falls just a month before Christmas, so it’s perfectly acceptable to string your outdoor lights early, for the Thanksgiving weekend, as well, says Lou “The Masked Man” Meskimen, owner of Masked Man Services and Gilded Spruce in Vail. As a commercial and residential decorator, Meskimen
was the first to debut what has come to be one of Vail’s signatures: trees neatly and meticulously layered with lights, which follow each and every branch. “We don’t just call them Christmas lights; we call them winter lights up here,” he says, pointing to how white outdoor tree lights can remain up throughout the ski season. To accomplish the time-
consuming feat of tracing branches with lights, you’ll need to devote about a dozen or more hours to layer in a case of lights — 48 strands with 50 lights per strand — which is enough to adorn a 9-foot evergreen. But if you’re not up to the task and don’t want to hire someone like Meskimen to do the work, here are some other ways to celebrate the season through sparkling décor.

Pick out an old sports coat or jeans and a flannel from the this-is-so-old-it’s-too-lateto-donate pile, and, if you’re organized enough not to have such a pile, head over to your nearest thrift store; “dress” the wooden skeleton, and then stuff it with old rags or gunnysacks. Coffee shops may be a good source of the latter. Once Thanksgiving Weekend comes to a close, switch out fall leaves for evergreens, holly, poinsettias and other December foliage. Thanksgiving harvest Thanksgiving, or fall, décor makes its greatest impact at or near the front door, as well as inside the entryway. “You want that visual, that you’re having fun with the season, and it feels comfortable,” Meskimen says. Wreaths offer a warm welcome; silk leaf garlands accented with bright red berries, acorns and golden or orange bows reflect the waning colors of Mother Nature, as she settles into her winter white. Outdoors or in, Meskimen likes to incorporate traditional symbols of Thanksgiving, including pilgrims and Native Americans, as well as signs of harvest, like pumpkins, oversized acorns, squash, and metal, wooden or fabric turkeys. Bales of hay or bundled wheat hail to a time when life was simpler than it is now. While people can buy a variety of scarecrows at nearly any store, going back to earlier days when families made scarecrows or carved pumpkins provides an opportunity for bonding and memory making. An easy way to craft a scarecrow involves nailing a couple 2x2s together, a vertical for the body and head — perhaps
One of the best ways to get new ideas on how to decorate for the holidays is just strolling through stores and seeing how the experts display new and traditional items. You can also look in home journals for a broad spectrum of ideas. “Buy different things you might not normally try,” says Lou Meskimen, owner of Masked Man Services and Gilded Spruce in Vail. “You get your own taste by experimenting.” Here are some retail and consignment boutiques to start:
to the jolly guy himself. “There are all kinds of items you can have fun with,” Meskimen says. However, he cautions that less is better: A few lit trees or one to two sophisticated lawn art objects will do the trick. A green garland wrapped with tiny white lights along railings and doors also make for a simple and clean, yet festive, look. A large leather strap with sleigh bells hanging or a string of sleigh bells under a wreath merrily signal guests’ front door entrance. Family traditional In the last few years, winter scenes on canvas, punctuated with tiny sparking lights, have become popular seasonal art pieces in the entryway, Meskimen says. Beyond the entryway, first by illuminating dark corners with
characters and lights of cheer, some homeowners fill the remaining rooms with smaller decorative items, placed into the nooks and crannies of kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms and bookshelves. But most people fall into what Meskimen calls the traditional category: They decorate a tree with ornaments from kids and grandkids to illustrate the family’s history, or they group sentimental items that share similar colors or patterns to create a nice sense of balance. Perhaps the most memorable, yet overlooked, holiday element involves scents of home cooking and spices. Even if you end up faking it with scented candles, there’s nothing like cinnamon, cookies
or baked apples to make a house feel like a home. “That’s the thing that sets off the holidays, is the smell of good food,” Meskimen says. So, within your décor strategy,
don’t stop at the visuals. Incorporate as many senses as possible — the texture of scarecrow straw or Santa’s velvet coat, the sound of holiday songs, and the scent of savory spices.

occurs, rather than refinishing the surface. Engineered wood also incorporates textural patterns mimicking handscraping and distinctive stain and whitewash patterns. “They offer a lot more aesthetic designs than
real wood, and nice consistency,” O’Brien says. As a result, more and more people install engineered hardwood throughout their home, and also tend to include it in the master bedroom because of its durability.
“More and more people have dogs than children, especially up here, so it’s easier to clean,” she says. However, homeowners still enjoy the warm, luxurious feel of carpet under their bare feet, and both natural wood

grounded homes for centuries, and while many homeowners still choose solid-wood flooring, newer engineered products are turning more and more heads. Besides sustainability, which is a huge issue in and of itself, solidwood flooring poses problems in our dry climate. Even after builders allow wood planks, which still contain moisture, to “acclimate” to the High Country, once installed, homeowners often watch, with dismay, as gaps appear between the boards, particularly during winter months with radiant floor heating. Those who installed hickory are especially aware of the shrinkage. As trends called for wider and wider planks, mountain homeowners faced limitations, due to potential warping. Enter engineered products. “Engineered wood does incredibly well in our dry climate,” says Leah O’Brien, designer at Ruggs Benedict in Avon. “Solid hardwood has a lot of movement.” But when engineered wood first hit the market, not everyone accepted it as “real” wood. It’s still a stigma designers occasionally face, and one they educate consumers about. “It’s important for people to know it’s still real wood,” O’Brien says. “It just has a composite, or structural, backing.” The stabilizing layers prevent planks from shrinking as much as solid wood. They also allow manufacturers to construct wider planks —planks measuring 9 inches wide and 10 feet long are not uncommon. Today’s styles contain less shine and more of a matte finish, in which owners can rub a bit of oil into the wood if distress

and new synthetics provide quality stain resistance. Carpeting like Smart Strand Silk provides stain resistance built into each fiber, so its stain-fighting ability doesn’t fade. Made from corn, the fibers feel softer than wool and are 90 percent renewable. Yet, the synthetics still contain chemicals, to which some people may have adverse reactions. For that reason, wool remains the golden standard, due to its sustainability, hypoallergenic properties and natural ability to repel stains. Other engineered flooring options While real wood and stone, especially limestone, are still mainstays in high-end homes, engineered look-alikes have

become so realistic, “in a lot of cases you can’t tell if it’s the real thing or not,” says Carri Tedstrom, design consultant for Select Surfaces in Avon. Homeowners are opting for large format (12 by 24 inches and larger) porcelain tiles, which look like stone (or wood), particularly in bathrooms and kitchens. “They’re stain resistant and extremely hard, so they probably won’t crack, and you can get a little more consistency with the color,” Tedstrom says. Trending colors have transitioned from golds to grays and taupes. Disadvantages of quarried stone include the fact that it’s not always easy to guarantee a specific tone, and the fashioned tiles don’t come in oversized formats. In the past, mountain homeowners may have turned their backs on vinyls, but a new generation of luxury vinyls has hit the market, and they’re making an impact. Even higher-end homeowners are installing the wood lookalikes in lower levels, where they might encounter water. “It’s easy to clean up with a mop, and the wear layers are a lot thicker and last longer than old linoleum,” Tedstrom says.
Designed by James Tufenkian, the Firjustan Ruby rug is hand knotted. Available at Ruggs Benedict.
Rugs: the final touch One of the latest products on the market, driven by outdoor living, is polypropylene outdoor carpeting, which doesn’t mold or mildew, and weathers well. Unique stair runners, which don’t necessarily match other carpeting throughout the home, are also trending. Patterned, stripped and animal print carpeting is finding a home on staircases. Because stairs suffer a lot of wear, it’s a likely area to replace carpeting in sooner than other regions of the home. “It’s a nice place to show creativity and do something different but not be married to the pattern,” O’Brien says.
High-quality, traditional area rugs are still popular, but design experts are noticing a departure from reds and browns to a desire for the more neutral, softer, yet cooler, blues and grays. Abstract designs are especially prevalent, and if homeowners lean toward a floral pattern, they tend to choose a larger, more contemporary floral, O’Brien says. Extremely soft, thick pile — the new shag — is also making a comeback. “People want homes that are useable and friendly with softness and durability,” O’Brien says. “They want to lie on the floor. They want it to be inviting.”

cooking and entertaining friends and family during ski vacations.” Also, the kitchen didn’t have ample storage, so it didn’t reflect the owner’s personal taste. LKW Design Associates worked with Sarah Wyscarver of SRE Building Associates, as well as Laura Bennett of Vail Cabinets, to complete the project. The kitchen came together with new painted cabinetry in a warm, cream color, along with an improved lighting design, which helped bring the space from dull to bright. The island was reconfig-

ured to open up the interior of the kitchen, which made it more functional for cooking and entertaining. “The island with bar seating was left at counter height to invite guests to engage with each other between the living spaces and kitchen,” Critchlow explains. Decorative elements like a custom mosaic backsplash, oilrubbed bronze cabinet hardware and a custom, built-in pantry — which is the mirror image of the refrigerator/freezer — helped to create a space to reflect the owner’s personal style. Some of the features integrated into the space included a Sharp microwave drawer and Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawers. The microwave stays out of sight from the living room, and the

dishwasher setup makes it easy to wash smaller loads of dishes from events like après-ski gatherings. “The decorative wood hood over the range from Vail Cabinets was incorporated into the cabinet design in lieu of the stainless steal microwave that is typically seen in small condo kitchens,” Critchlow says. “This creates a much more appealing focal point seen from the living room, and gives the kitchen a more custom look.” Onyx, glass and marble stones create the custom-blend mosaic tile in rhomboid pattern
from Decorative Materials, which was installed along the entire backsplash. This feature reflects additional light to give the space a vibrant glow. The Heirloom custom wood countertops are surprisingly durable, Critchlow says, and create a beautiful color contrast with the cabinetry. “These design elements all work together to create a beautiful space with functional countertop area,” she adds, “to be used for entertaining and integration with the adjacent living room.”

INDOOR GARDENING
THOSE WINTER ‘GREENS’ Decorate with greenery for the snow season by MARTY JONES
scent of the winter season more than fresh greenery, and when white snows begin to blanket the valley floor, it becomes easier to source greenery from local vendors. Garlands, boughs, and wreaths all bring a bit of the outdoors inside during a time when the exterior color palette is limited. Despite the tendency of greenery to be, well, green, different types can bring texture, fragrance, and interest to your home’s interior decor all winter long.
Greenery: Beyond its holiday associations A Christmas tree glowing with lights might be the first live element that comes to mind when you consider common interior uses for evergreens. But bringing live greenery into the home for the winter season need not be associated with a particular religious tradition or holiday celebration. More generally, greenery represents winter’s beauty, and it can be incorporated into uses that extend beyond the traditional, bordering on or immersing themselves into realms that are quirky and even unexpected. Take a fresh approach to your interior decorating this winter season by incorporating garlands, boughs and wreaths into your home with these ideas and considerations in mind.
GARLANDS
Garlands include greenery tips as the central element of a decorative strand. Appropriately, garlands are sometimes called roping, and the long strand — or rope — of greenery can be hung throughout the home along door or window trim, across a fireplace hearth, or from a stair railing. 34

Traditional
Boughs at Colorado Alpines & Wildflower Farm
Garlands are often embellished with other natural elements including pinecones or sprigs of blue-berried juniper that add interesting textures and scents. Artificial additions such as small branches of deep red winter berries or strands of artificial cranberries can add beautiful color contrast to a garland’s deep green hue. Bows and holiday ornaments traditionally adorn garlands, as do strands of holiday lights.
Unexpected
For a novel take on the traditional garland, use floral wire to weave your favorite fresh flowers into the greenery strand for a special occasion. Red rose buds will add a scent that’s not usually associated with the winter season while keeping a traditional color combination, but if you want to branch out even more, choose pink or yellow rosebuds to dot your creation. Select flowers that highlight colors or patterns already present in your home’s decor, or go for a stunning floral combination solely because it creates a visual combination you love.
BO U GH S
Boughs are simply branches of greenery, and their small-tomedium size makes them suited for multiple uses. Different types of evergreens have different needle textures, lending to a variety decoration styles. Cedar boughs, for example, have lacy tips whereas Douglas fir boughs have hardy, dense tips. Juniper boughs are known for their unique fragrance, and some boughs are sold with small, clustered cones intact. Whereas garlands are often sold by length, boughs are usually sold by weight.
Traditional
Boughs are perfect for placing in the center of a table for a centerpiece, which can be accented with natural elements such as winter berries or interspersed with candles in hurricane-style lanterns. Boughs are also traditionally placed along the top of a fireplace hearth, and they can be decorated with bows or ornaments and hung on walls or doors.
Unexpected
Boughs can be placed in plant containers or large vases and decorated as mini Christmas
trees without adhering to the Christmas theme. Decorating these mini trees can be an exercise in creativity as you choose to ornament the tree with quirky memorabilia or elements that form a theme. Suspend colorful, artificial birds from boughs, or hang small wrapped party favors rom the branches to create a fun surprise for guests that’s also a takehome treat. Place creative bough arrangements in the bathroom to add a fresh scent, or put them in large, potted planters outside the front door to welcome guests.

W RE ATHS
Wreaths are circle-shaped arrangements of greenery traditionally placed on the front door or on the front of a home as a welcome symbol. Besides the holiday tree, a wreath may be one of the most common decoration elements incorporated into the home for the holiday season.
Traditional
Wreaths are most often adorned with a single large bow, often in colors of red, green, white, and gold. Sometimes other ornaments are added, including those that could be placed on a Christmas tree. The front door is an obvious and appropriate place for the wreath, as it’s the home’s welcome center, but wreaths are also often placed in windows on the front of a home.
Unexpected
Think of a wreath as a nesting place for hanging fun objects. If you’re having a winter hot-buttered rum party, for example, choose to put a
large wreath on a kitchen wall, and hook drinking mugs for guests onto the wreath’s frame. The central, circular frame makes a wreath sturdy enough to hook other objects that can be part of a visual display or even a meal. If you want to stick with the bow convention, choose an exciting pattern that’s sure to draw interest or fit with your theme. Despite your best efforts, live greenery likely won’t last for months. Keep any live creations out of direct sunlight, south-facing windows, and excessively dry areas of the home. As fireplace mantles are traditional locations for greenery, be especially careful to avoid fire hazards, and if the mantle gets warm, choose another location for your live design. While products such as Wilt Pruf® plant protector may help extend the life of greenery, it may also mask its desirable scent. Choose to purchase greenery before a special occasion, and plan to refresh it throughout the winter season.
Wreaths are a great way to play with colors.

private bath presents a very convenient floorplan for both the young and the young at heart. The kitchen is graced with granite countertops and stainless appliances and enjoys the gas fireplace that faces the living room and dining room. Upstairs are a nicely sized family room and guest bedrooms — or bedrooms for the kids — and a full bath. The skillful design with common space on two levels allows for several activities to be comfortably conducted at the same time with a certain amount of privacy, such as studying, TV watching, entertaining or just relaxing. And the views of Castle Peak and surrounding mountains cannot be underestimated: They are simply gorgeous. Your home at Hawk’s Nest is NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) Green Certified, complete with energyefficient appliances, which equals a cost savings for you. Homes are 100 percent built on-site with materials that are of renewable and low-eco-impacting construction. The high-end
insulation for sound and heat will also impact your pocketbook favorably, while creating a sound barrier to the exterior. Picture how much freer your life could be without the burden of exterior maintenance. Instead of mowing the lawn or painting the house, you could be hiking and biking on the many trails in the surrounding Hardscrabble BLM area, or hitting the slopes in nearby Beaver Creek or Vail. Your front yard as well as your fenced-in backyard will be fully maintained by the Homeowners Association along with exterior painting and roof maintenance (including repair and replacement if ever needed). Not only does low-maintenance living provide you with more time to do the things you enjoy but you will have a greater sense of security when taking short or extended periods of time away from your home. And should you determine to use your home as a rental property, you can be confident that the exterior of your investment will always look pristine. When you live in Hawk’s
Nest your community will continually reflect a beautiful, well-cared-for appearance. This private, new neighborhood boasts abundant wildlife and a nature park, all bordering miles and miles of BLM land. Yet Hawk’s Nest is only a short distance from Gypsum’s top-rated schools, the Eagle County Airport, Gypsum Creek Golf Course,
Gypsum Recreation Center, the public library, Lundgren Theatre and so much more. This is a lovely, friendly community with new homes and a new way of living. Hawk’s Nest is a real hidden gem that will captivate you. Come and take a peek — you may decide to stay. Contact Didi Doolittle for your personal showing. NOVEMBER 2015 | VAIL VALLEY HOME

the mountain scene Elements and textures from around the world contribute to Vail’s sense of style – BY BETH POTTER –
Vail Valley’s interior designers are having a moment. Make that a “mountain moment.” It’s a global, well-traveled look filled with up-to-date textures and colors, served up with a unique mountain twist. Think rustic, organic wood and a relaxed feel. The highcountry vibe is luxe and low-down all at once. Trendsetters around the country look to Vail to find out what’s new on the mountain scene. These designers deliver.

ersonal taste and professional focus drive the interior design work of Eddy Doumas. His modern contemporary aesthetic includes a glass-blowing artisan from Seattle and hard-to-find fabrics. “I love the clean, tailored mountain homes,” Doumas says. “It’s time for something new.” “New” often means making a fabric statement – hand-woven wools and cozy winter-sweater-looking knits. Cashmere and alpaca yield a broad array of colors. Doumas focuses closely on what clients are asking for, then creates a personalized look. “We really engage the client to participate,” Doumas says. “It should be a really fun experience.” Some of his favorites to use in the Vail Valley currently include a Milo Baughman chrome chair covered in faux fur and anything from Troscan Design and Furnishings in Chicago. John Pomp is the glass blower Doumas has worked with for years who does one-of-a-kind chandelier pieces; Jonathan Browning Studios in San Francisco offers lighting design. Style is important, but comfort is key to Vail Valley’s outdoor lifestyle. Whether clients can afford to spend $100 or $10,000 on the living room table, they want it to be able to take a beating, Doumas says. “The purpose here is not to show off. It’s family-oriented,” Doumas says. “Every client wants to come home and put their feet up on their coffee table.”

Color palettes are important at Worth Interiors — two or three key colors per room. And Doumas gets inspiration from travels both near and far — from Worth Interiors locations in New York, the Hamptons and TOWN Studios, the Denver showroom, to regular trips to Milan and Paris. Other designers across the country copy
elements of Worth Interiors’ designs, Doumas says. He considers it the best form of compliment. “It keeps me on my toes,” Doumas says. “I want to be the coolest, new thing happening.”

allas Lyon coined the phrase “organic mixology” to describe her style. It’s a juxtaposition of the timeless and the classic, the fun and the eclectic — with maybe one or two rustic pieces countering a contemporary setting or an unexpectedly contemporary artwork hung in a more traditional setting. Lyon likes to help visualize what a client wants, then use her vast network of suppliers and craftspeople to help make that vision a reality. For example, she and a client installed a custom-made vertical fish tank into a kitchen-great room remodel in Singletree in one recent adventure. Other times, she might paint an iconic mountain decor item an offbeat color or add an iridescent shine. Years ago, when it seemed everyone wanted to get rid of antler chandeliers, Lyon bought one, painted it red, and made it a focal point of a redesigned room, for example. “It’s not the main point but something quirky,” Lyon says. “I try to maintain freshness and not be too hokey.”
Dallas Lyon collabLyon used a yard rake on a orated with client plaster/concrete mix to create the Robert Spangler and architect Kyle Webb texture she wanted for a dining on a kitchen-great room wall in a Vail remodel room remodel, which included installing a recently. A huge mirror and vertical fish tank. lighting sconces framed the wall, PHOTOS BY CHARLES TOWNSEND BESSENT balanced on the other side of the room by a grass wall covering. She’s not afraid of color, either, on the walls, as an accent, sometimes even on the ceiling. A dramatic light scheme she creates might draw the viewer from a long hallway to room with a view of the mountains. “The element of surprise is around every corner,” Lyon says. Artwork is a very personal element of interior design for clients, and Lyon is not afraid to jump in, often shopping for art with them. She also has commissioned artworks, from the likes of Carrie Fell and other artists well loved in the valley. “Times are constantly changing, and people are changing. As long as it looks good, and it’s comfortable and they love it, I’m keeping it lively,” Lyon says. NOVEMBER 2015 | VAIL VALLEY HOME

unction and beauty are key elements in Patti Dixon’s design world. So is color. Lime-green cabinets at floor level and dark wood cabinets up top strike a dramatic pose in a recent East Vail kitchen project. A white countertop with a colorful, confetti-like finish tops the kitchen island. On the wall, a bright, white tile backsplash and shiny vent hood complete the look. The effect is fun and playful. In a Cordillera great room and kitchen, Dixon uses a dusty, chambray blue color in pillows and cabinets to set the tone in another recent project. Other calming earth-tone hues include various distressed woods used in barstools and walls contrasted with a zebrastriped black and white oversized ottoman. Dixon is passionate about listening to clients to help them create the environments they want. Clients fill out extensive lifestyle questionnaires to explain the dynamics of how they live and how they like to use their homes. “I listen and understand my clients’ preferences, then transform what they have into something they love but did not know possible,” Dixon says. She often starts with an artwork or a prized rug as a catalyst for the change — using the piece to drive other decisions. Taking it up a notch, Dixon often shops with her clients for artwork or purchases it for them. She solicits pictures and designs of what the client wants, then goes to work. Dixon came to Vail in 1981 from Grand Cayman Island, where she met her late husband, Dick. She previously did commercial work in hotels and office buildings in Texas and the Caribbean. Dixon already is busy this fall with holiday decorating deadlines. She’s also designing a new ski room for an existing client. “I can’t think of another career I would love more than this,” Dixon says.
A bold approach to using color is one of the hallmarks of designer Patti Dixon, as evidenced in two recent projects, a great room in Cordillera and a kitchen in East Vail. PHOTOS COURTESY PATTI DIXON DESIGN

Leadership Through Change Vail Board of REALTORS® announces Doug Landin 2015 REALTOR of the Year
S
ome of the best leaders
of our time aren’t in it for the glory but rather for the service of their community. These leaders possess specific, recognizable characteristics: vision, passion, courage, wisdom, generosity and trustworthiness. Our choice to follow these leaders is not arbitrary, but unconscious, and great leadership is particularly important during times of change. For the past 36 years, the Vail Board of REALTORS® (VBR) has honored real estate leaders in our community who exhibit these traits with humility, professionalism and dedication to the industry on a local and state level. This year, Julie Retzlaff, past REALTOR® of the Year, had the privilege to announce Doug Landin as 2015 REALTOR® of the Year. “Having been in Doug’s position last year, I know what it feels like to receive such an honor from my peers. It made presenting DOUG the award to him that much more exciting,” says Retzlaff. “As part of the selection committee, you gain an understanding of how meaningful this award is.” Long road of leadership Landin’s leadership path in the Vail Valley is long and wide like the Riva Ridge trail on Vail Mountain. He arrived here in 1975 as a ski instructor for Vail Resorts. His passion for the outdoors has translated into everything he does within our Rocky Mountain region. Consistently a top real estate producer, Landin works hard, then goes above and beyond to facilitate change. He was a

VBR board member from 2002 through 2010. In 2011, he was elected VBR Chair at a trying time. Deep in recession, when distressed homes and job loss blanketed the news, Landin kept the organization moving forward. Although it was rough, Landin supported the MLS change to Rapattoni, a more robust system for listing and tracking properties. As with most technology upgrades, this one came with trials that he handled with consistency. He also was instrumental in updating the lock-box system to our current, more efficient approach. And, during his tenure as Chair, the VBR experienced some of its highest participation. While serving as VBR Chair in 2011 and Past Chair in 2012, Landin also served on the Colorado Board of REALTORS® (CAR) from 2010 through 2012, representing our real estate community at the state and national level. An arLANDIN dent supporter of REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC), Landin’s efforts ensured the VBR met state and national RPAC goals. Landin continued representation at the state level in 2013/14 serving as the Mountain District Vice President and a member of the Legislative Policy Committee (LPC), a time intensive position particularly during the state legislative sessions. When asked how it felt to receive the REALTOR® of the Year award, Landin was truly modest. “I had no idea this was coming to me,” he says. “It was very humbling. I’m very appreciative to be recognized by the board and

grateful for the opportunity to serve over the years.” True to form, he is most proud of the opportunity to give back. “Although upgrading to Rapattoni and the lock-box system were both important, I think being a part of the legislative decision-making process as VP of the Mountain District was the most rewarding,” says Landin. “Representing our board and reviewing bills that went through at the state and national level was exciting. As part of the LPC, I gave our area a voice on important topics like property rights, real estate values and homeownership issues.” Recognizing a leader What does it take to earn this award? The criteria are specific and the competition is steep. Nominees must be VBR members in good standing for no less than five years. They must consistently exhibit a high degree of professionalism. Additionally, the nominees should participate in civic activity, CARHOF and/ or RPAC, be active in CAR at the state level, a recognized business leader through
conduct and accomplishments, and an ambassador of the real estate profession. According to Retzlaff, nominations are submitted by the VBR general membership for review by a selection committee comprised of all past REALTOR® of the Year recipients. “Strong leaders must be passionate about this profession and truly care about protecting the future of our industry as well as the rights of homeownership. There are many issues being discussed on Capitol Hill and within our state that we must play an active role in.” Retzlaff continues, “Being open to change and new ideas is crucial. Technology is ever changing. We must adapt and stay at the forefront with our entire organization. This takes consistent, dedicated leadership.” The VBR congratulates Doug Landin, 2015 REALTOR® of the Year, for his commitment, professionalism and service to the real estate industry as a whole and specifically here in the Vail Valley.
