Together we recently updated the City’s Strategic Plan to help provide a roadmap to Allen’s future as a safe, vibrant, engaged and financially-sound community. This plan is already shaping our City, from enhancement projects in some of Allen’s older neighborhoods, to new development along the SH-121 corridor, to the formation of the Downtown Allen Steering Committee in 2021. This citizen-led effort aims to take what makes our community so special, and nurture it in Allen’s central business district with the input of fellow Allen residents and business owners. As exciting as it is to watch our community grow, I believe some of Allen’s most exciting developments are happening inside the bright minds of our youngest residents. Allen Independent School District and Collin College both serve our community with state-of-the-art programs and excellent student outcomes. Collin College recently opened the new Collin College Technical Campus to train local students in high-tech trades and specialties. Across the street, Allen ISD inspires up-and-coming scientists, engineers, artists and mathematicians at the beautiful Allen ISD STEAM Center. Over the past several years, Allen students reaped the benefits of savvy educators and

supportive administrators who have the resources to adapt to any situation. With Allen ISD’s cutting-edge classroom technology and renowned staff at the helm, we’re thrilled to see the development of our city’s future workforce.

But Allen is known for more than its thriving businesses and academic smarts. We’re also a whole lot of fun. From pristine parks to performing arts, Allen is a place where you’ll never have to hear the words “I’m bored.” Residents enjoy more than 1,300 acres of park land, over 78 miles of hike and bike trails and 66 parks and facilities—a list which will soon include the state-of-the-art Stephen G. Welcome to the Town of Fairview!    We are a Town of everything from horse farms to upscale neighborhoods with beautiful homes on acreage to luxury apartments to upscale shopping and dining.   Fairview also has Heritage Ranch – a vibrant retirement community with a great golf course, which is located adjacent to the 289 acre Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Area.

The Town of Fairview is located at the southeast intersection of two major highways US75 and Hwy 121 which gives our residents good access to their places of employment throughout the DFW Metroplex.  Our businesses are located in or near the US75 corridor and have great visibility to passing traffic.

Founded over 30 years ago, North Texas Performing Arts has become one of the largest arts organizations in Texas offering programs across the metroplex including at Fairview Youth Theatre, conveniently located in Fairview Town Center. NTPA is dedicated to developing the character of youth through quality performing arts education and family entertainment. Companies seeking to build their workforce and individuals seeking jobs have discovered that Collin County, Texas offers access to plenty of both: workers and work. It’s a natural, symbiotic relationship of any thriving economy: companies move to areas with access to a workforce that meets their needs, and prospective workers move where the jobs are.

But when a family is considering a relocation to follow one partner’s career, the decision very often involves at least one other person’s employment prospects. A major move isn’t made in a vacuum, and often a “trailing spouse” will be looking for a job, too, as David Ellis, assistant director of Allen Economic Devel opment Corp. (AEDC), points out.

“It’s a decision by committee. But this becomes a problem when an area is reliant on one or two industries, and if you’re not in those industries, you may have to take a real step back in your career,” Ellis says. “The

advantage we have is that the economy here has been very strong, and what makes it that way is that it’s diverse. Many times, the trailing spouse has the opportunity not to just preserve their career but even to enhance it by moving here.”

The Dallas-Fort Worth region has led the country in corporate relocations in recent years, with the last 10 Fortune 500 head quarters to move to DFW representing eight different business sectors, according to the Dallas Regional Chamber.

Along with corporate relocations and the resulting population growth come jobs in

construction, retail, restaurant, education, healthcare, a variety of service businesses, and more. A diverse economy begets a diverse job market. And thanks to that diverse economy, Ellis adds, “DFW was the last region in the last recession and the first out of it.”

Over the last five years, Allen experienced average annual employment growth of 2 percent, outpacing DFW at 1.6 percent and the U.S. at 0.3 percent. Even in the last quarter of 2021, after a year and half of the labor challenges brought by the Covid pandemic, Allen saw 6.7 percent employment growth compared to 5.5 percent

Likewise, this area’s unemployment rate tends to fall below that of other metropolitan areas as well as the nation. The most recent unemployment figures reported by Texas Workforce Commission (April 2022) show Collin County’s jobless rate at 2.7 percent, nearly a full point below the national rate of 3.6.

(FEDC). “A location here gives employers access to talent at all levels.”

“Access to workforce” is the term economic developers hear repeatedly from prospective corporate relocators. “When we looked at our future strategic growth, Allen provided the perfect location for our corporate headquarters,” says Eric Pointer, president and CEO of Credit Union of Texas (CUTX), whose new address is in Allen’s Watters Creek development, next to the Allen Convention Center & Visitors Bureau. “This new location not only puts us in the center of our growing footprint, but it also allows us access to top-notch talent in the area.”

Stephen Cracknell, CEO and founder of US Medical IT, an Allen-based IT support company specializing in the healthcare industry, concurs. “Traditionally, the North Texas area has been a great place to find talented candidates. We have had great success hiring young talent directly from local colleges like Collin and University of Texas-Dallas. DFW also has a large pool of experienced technology professionals to draw upon,” he says. “Finding employees after the

pandemic has been challenging; in response, we have raised our salaries and we’re offering a hybrid work environment.”

Since “talent is king,” as AEDC executive director/CEO Dan Bowman says, companies want to be in a location where they feel con fident their employees will want to be — one where highly rated schools, beautiful parks, a desirable housing market, a strong safety record, an abundance of convenient amenities and close proximity to jobs all contribute to an outstanding quality of life for the whole family.

The Allen and Fairview area provides just that, and current growth efforts aim to continue attracting employers and employees with mixeduse developments that seemingly offer it all. “Mixed-use is so critical to us,” says Bowman, “mixed-use nodes of office employment near retail, restaurants and parks — they all need to be together to be part of a good ecosystem, and that’s the key driver that keeps those employers interested and moving here. That’s why The Farm in Allen was named Best Mixed-Use Development by the Dallas Business Journal (April 2022).”

in Allen is a 135-acre mixed-use development that will include office, hotel, retail and restau rants, housing, parks and open space, a trail system and an entertainment venue.

Mark Christenson, president of international operations for MD7, a mobile infrastructure consultancy, says a highly educated local workforce was just one of many factors that drew MD7 from San Diego to Collin County. “Although San Diego is one of the most beau tiful places on Earth, with weather second to none, it has a very high cost of living and it was difficult for employees to achieve the goal of home ownership there,” he says. “Several of our customers and partners have a significant presence in the Metroplex, it’s geographically central in the U.S. and it’s two time zones closer to Europe, where we do about 35 percent of our business. We looked at several cities, and felt like Allen was best aligned with where we are as a company. We wanted to partner with a city that had substantial experience helping companies relocate.” Nationally recognized schools, nearby amenities and that sweetspot location near 75 and 121 rounded out MD7’s list of reasons to love Allen.

EMPLOYEE ATTRACTION AND RETENTION

The current job outlook might be thought of as “a buyer’s market,” but many “sellers” are adapting and succeeding in sealing the deal.

“The competition for recruiting and retaining top talent has never been more challenging,” says FEDC’s Quinn. “Those that seem to be winning the battle under stand that they must take a customized approach to employee benefits. Frontline workers, mid-level employees and C-suite executives are motivated by different things. Also, the pandemic has shifted the employ ees’ priorities, and many are willing to trade the highest salary for a position that offers them a well-rounded package. This could include a location where they don’t have to spend hours commuting to and from work. In addition to the benefits package, a culture of flexibility is also desirable. The willingness of the employer to allow a hybrid type of work environment is highly appealing to future employees.”

Bowman of AEDC agrees. “We hear from our larger employers that if they hope to

attract and retain talent, right at the top of those job postings they really need to say flexibility is available in terms of where you work and being able to work remote.”

But offering a mixed-use workplace setting — from the more intimate Fairview Town Center’s new office center, to the larger but still highly walkable Watters Creek, to the even larger developments in progress — with on-site or nearby restaurants, gyms, collaborative work spaces, parks and trails and other amenities, can lure many remote workers back to the office.

TRAINING AND GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES MATTER

In addition to the tangible items that create a desirable workplace, some of the most highly valued ones are visible only in an employer’s people. Two things make MD7 a great place to work, Christenson says: “The first is our company culture and the second is that we try to promote from within. This gives people the opportunity to come here and stay here while they grow. When people know these kinds of advancements are possible, it gives them

the motivation to learn their job, improve and then take on more responsibility when a promotion opportunity is available.”

Credit Union of Texas also offers employ ee programs and benefits that foster career and personal growth. Its Experience Uni versity, which helps team members kick off their careers, and the Pathways Program, which fosters career advancement, are just two ways CUTX attracts, retains and grows its team from within.

It’s not only corporate employees at the professional level who are finding job opportunities in the Allen and Fairview area. Niel Brown, owner and operator of Allen’s two Chick-fil-A restaurants, employs high school and college students as well as adults, offering part-time and full-time schedules. He credits his restaurants’ ability to attract and retain quality employees to their culture of caring and their commit ment to grow and develop their team. “Our goal is to teach job skills, life skills and social skills along with servant leadership, effective communication, problem solving and critical thinking. One of the job market changes that the pandemic has revealed is a willingness by employers to hire “trainable” workers, says Brandi Harrison Trotter, business development supervisor for Workforce Solutions for North Center Texas. “I see a shift toward employers hiring people who may not have experience at the onset, but

they’re willing to train them up to where they need to be because it’s hard to find candidates with the exact qualifications that employers list in job descriptions.”

Trotter says employers are looking at different types of candidate pools, too. Workforce Solutions has a career explora tion program that assists adults considering a transition to another industry as well as students who are not yet in the workforce, including those in career and technical edu cation and trades programs. She echoes the employers who emphasized their training and advancement policies: “Employers are looking at what their practices looked like five years ago and what they should look like now, such as being willing to train employees when they come on board, which is something that’s especially attrac tive to career seekers because it shows that the employer has a vested interest in them. Offering training opportunities both coming in and to move up within an organization is something that has become prevalent in the last year or so.”

Collin County-based companies seeking programs to boost skills within their ranks are fortunate to be located near Collin College, home to the Collin Corporate College, which offers custom-built train ing programs for all employment levels, including both soft skills such as leadership development and customer service, and hard skills such as robotics and industrial automation.

“Nationally, 70 percent of organizations struggle to find workers with the skill set necessary to fill open positions. The Collin Corporate College works with employers to develop the exact training needed to help employees remain relevant. These programs assist employers with both talent acquisi tion and talent retention,” explains Roger Widmer, COO of the Corporate College. Collin College also offers a comprehen sive technical campus providing students with multiple paths to success in high-de mand, high-wage career fields including automotive, construction, healthcare, information technology and manufacturing.

More than 21,000 students in pre-kin dergarten through grade 12 are enrolled in Allen Independent School District’s (AISD) eighteen elementary schools, three middle schools, Lowery Freshman Center and Allen High School.

The district’s STEAM (science, technol ogy, engineering, art and mathematics) center opened in 2019 to challenge stu dents at all grade levels through interactive, hands-on experiences.

Is it possible for the longest restaurant drive-through lanes to also be the fastest? Visit either of Niel Brown’s Chick-fil-A locations in Allen (Twin Creeks Village or Stacy Road) and you will quickly see that crowds do not have to result in chaos. In fact, the efficiencies found at Chick-fil-A are among the keys to its extraordinary success.

Brown held his first job with Chick-fil-A in 1983 as a 15-year-old high school stu dent in Tyler, Texas, not realizing he was building the foundation for a successful career. “My operator was such a caring person who created a fun and engaging atmosphere and a culture that I wanted to be a part of,” he recalls. “Ed became my mentor and told me he would teach me as much as he could about the business.”

And his mentor did just that, nurturing the teen’s professional growth and lead ership skills. While attending college on an athletic and Chick-fil-A scholarship in Rome, Ga., Brown continued to work for the company in Atlanta and opened many of its first freestanding stores as it expanded from a regional mall-only company. It was during that time that he met Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy, who had opened his first restaurant in 1967 in Atlanta’s Greenbriar Mall.

“Truett believed that if we could teach teens the things they needed to know and understand at a young age, they would be better equipped to be successful in whatever they did in life. Truett walked the walk and talked the talk,” Brown says.

Today, more than 3000 Chick-fil-A stores are in operation in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, and the found er’s influence is still apparent. “Truett built this business on generosity. He believed that to be successful you had to take great care of people and your community. He believed in order to get bigger we had to continue to get better. He believed in treating everyone with

honor, dignity and respect, and that when we consistently treated people with kindness in a clean and welcoming environment they would continue to come back because of the relationship and the experience.”

After college, Brown operated the Chick-fil-A location at Richardson Square Mall before opening Allen’s Twin Creeks Village store in 1999 followed by Stacy Road in 2010. “My goal was to become involved in the community and always be a good neighbor and partner to the city of Allen, our local business community and our school district. We strive to work with anyone who calls upon us and try to never say no.”

The lengthy list of Chick-fil-A’s con tributions to the community includes countless school programs, giveaways and sponsorships to generous support and appreciation for first responders and personnel.

Brown’s stores currently employ more than 275 team members ranging in age from 14 to 90, with about 40-45 percent full time and the remainder combining part-time schedules with school and other obligations. Despite losing a significant amount of their traditional dine-in business as well as staff during the pandemic, Brown says input from his team and guests led to learned efficiencies and processes that continue to produce positive results post-pandemic. Creatively configured multiple lanes and well-trained, friendly staff keep the drivethrough lanes moving efficiently.

“We believe everyone has a story and we don’t always know what that story is, but we have 30-second encounters when we get to make a difference by what we say and do — a simple smile or a kind word,” says Brown. “Maybe a simple greeting or fond farewell could be just the thing that someone needs to change the outlook of their day.”

Dear Friends and Fellow Chamber Members,

It is with great pleasure that I accepted the chairmanship of the Allen Fairview Chamber for 2022. It is a pleasure and honor to work beside such an amazing group of volunteer leaders who serve on our board. We are privileged to have dedicated and hardworking staff members, who have our members’ and Chamber’s best interests at heart. I look forward to working with the Board and the staff, utilizing the foundation that has been built to develop a quality program for 2022.

These individuals all met in January at a Board Planning Session to develop a Business Plan and to set priorities for 2022. At this session, the 2022 Program of Work was developed. This Program of Work defines our Plan for 2022 and beyond. The intent of this plan is to provide additional services and benefits to our members while making adjustments where necessary to allow our Chamber

to grow and prosper. At this session, our staff provided detailed information on where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go, along with recommendations on how to get there. Our engaged board members listened and provided thoughtful feedback and ideas to our staff.

The following is the finalized and board approved Program of Work for 2022. We look forward to providing information on the success of each program in our 2022 Annual Report which will be developed and shared with members the first part of 2023.

Eggs & Issues is an initiative of the Chamber’s Business Advocacy Committee that is tasked with presenting programs featuring local elected officials, updates on issues affecting the business community and quality of life in Allen and Fairview and in presenting annual Meet the Candidate events allowing business leaders the opportunity to know before you go to vote.

Leadership Allen Fairview

Leadership Allen Fairview is a 9-month community orientation and leadership skills development course and is open to any individual who either lives or works in Allen or Fairview. Class 33 graduated in May and Class 34 begins in October.

The Allen and Fairview communities are flourishing with new businesses and a highly-skilled workforce. Much of the success and growth is influenced by the Allen Fairview Chamber of Commerce and its amazing members. I have had the opportunity to meet dozens of like-minded entrepreneurs and community leaders sharing their passion to make our community the best. Being a member of the Allen Fairview Chamber has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Through my involvement, I formed countless great friendships and business relationships! Chamber 411 shifted from a breakfast meeting to an afternoon event incorporating a happy hour option for those attending. This event is hosted by board members and staff for new and prospective members who wish to learn more about Chamber programs, networking, promotion and other benefits of membership.

WISE Holiday Gift Expo, Luncheon & Fashion Show

Another success event hosted at Heritage Ranch Golf & Country Club provided a much-needed opportunity for the ladies of our Chamber and those living in Heritage Ranch an opportunity to shop, network, lunch and enjoy a fabulous fashion show by Chico’s in Watters Creek. Fabulous vendors with amazing products had the opportunity to enjoy lunch and network along with selling their items prior to and after the luncheon and fashion show.

COMMITTEES

Ambassador Club/ Business Success Advocates

The Ambassador Club members are official hosts for the Chamber. They are active with members through their work in welcoming new and prospective members to networking

events, participating in the annual Operation Thank You, and attending ribbon cuttings for new members as well as other celebrations for the existing membership. Business Success Advocates are the retention arm of the Chamber’s volunteer committees. Utilizing their expertise and providing testimonials when visiting with members helps the Chamber to retain the current membership and grow the Chamber.

Business Advocacy

In 2021, the Chamber’s advocacy efforts were most often virtual. Three Meet the Candidates events were held for local elections including one for Allen City Council and AISD Board of Trustees and a second for Fairview Town Council, Lovejoy ISD and Collin College Board of Trustees. The third focused on Congressional District 3, Texas State Senate District 8, Texas State Representatives Districts 67 & 89, Collin County Judge, Commissioners Court and District Attorney.

DEI

A new initiative of the Chamber, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force hit the ground running with their virtual DEI Speaker Series. Presentations included Becoming a Better Leader: The ROI of DEI; What is Allyship?; and Leading from Within. The Task Force also focused on identifying programs and being a resource for small, minority, veteran and women-owned business certifications.
