PALISADE ITINERARY

FOR THE THRILL-SEEKER & OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST

(FAMILY-FRIENDLY ADAPTATIONS INCLUDED)

Palisade, Colorado, is a paradise for adventure lovers, offering world-class biking, skiing, hiking, rafting, and UTV trails—sometimes all in one day! Thanks to the area’s mild winter climate, locals have been known to hit the slopes in the morning and explore high-desert trails on two or four wheels in the afternoon.

WHERE TO STAY: The Homestead, with the Lewis Family as your generous hosts; backyard games, fire pits and resident pup, Pedro!

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Trees start blooming in April and grapes and apples are harvested into October.

PALISADE ITINERARY Adventure

HIGH DESERT THRILLS

TRAILS WITH UNBEATABLE VIEWS

Pack out what you pack in including plenty of water. The high desert sun is intense year-round!

Grab breakfast and get your coffee fix at The Milky Way before heading out on the trail.

• Mt. Garfield Trail, a steep 3.4 mile out-and-back trail, with an elevation gain of 1900 ft., leading to iconic views and a chance to spy wild horses. For added adventure, take the Gearhart Mine Trail, which detours to an old coal mine and tramway. This trail is 1/2 mile longer than Mt. Garfield Trail.

• Take the Palisade Rim Trail. This moderate hiking & biking, dog friendly, trail allows you to customize your experience by taking the lower (<4 mile) or upper (13 mile) loop. Petroglyphs and splendid views of the entire valley below included. Parts of the trail come close to cliff edges. It is recommended for families who hike together often and those who do not have a fear of heights.

• Family-Friendly Alternative: Opt for a guided horseback trail ride with JR’s Carriage Service through the Little Bookcliff Wild Horse area, where you’ll have the unique opportunity to witness wild horses in their natural habitat or book a wagon ride; hunt for Palisade treasures, pick a peach, and even let the kiddos sit next to the local guide to test their skills at driving a wagon!

LUNCH & FUEL UP

• Grab a table at Peach Street Distillery - Open daily with a full menu (inspired by fresh, local ingredients) and award winning spirits! Rather grab something on the way to the next adventure? Slice O’ Life Bakery has been a favorite stop for pastries, fresh sandwiches, and kid-approved treats for over 40 years.

RIDE THROUGH THE COUNTRYSIDE

• Cruise the Fruit & Wine Byway, a leisurely paved/gravel route past orchards making stops at wineries, cideries, and fruit stands. With 3 Fruit & Wine Byway route options (full loop - 25 miles) you can choose a route that fits your families endurance. Bike rentals available at Rapid Creek Cycles

SUNSET & LOCAL LIBATIONS

• In the warmer months (May–September), catch golden hour and cool off with a mellow float from Palisade Rim to Riverbend Park then head to Palisade Brewing Company for a Dirty Hippie Dark Wheat and an evening bite from their pub menu.

• Riverfront Alternative: On your way back to the put-in, get dropped off at Clark & Co. Distillery (hidden inside an orchard right along the Colorado River!) for great burgers, locally sourced kombucha & cocktails.

• Rentals & Shuttle Service from Palisade Shuttle.

BEFORE YOU DEPART

Stock up on freshly picked and locally sourced snacks at Kokopelli Farm Market or Blaine’s Farm Store before heading home.

BONUS ITINERARY! MULTI-SPORT MADNESS

Winter, typically the slow season in Palisade, can actually be one of the best times to visit for those seeking adventure and a more relaxed experience. With fewer crowds, visitors can enjoy uncrowded trails, quiet wineries, and personalized experiences at local businesses. The mild winter climate in the valley allows for year-round hiking, biking, and UTV adventures, while Powderhorn Mountain Resort, just 45 minutes away, offers excellent skiing and snowboarding. For thrillseekers, winter is the perfect time to ski in the morning and bike or ride UTVs in the afternoon—a unique combination that few destinations can offer. Plus, with cozy tasting rooms and food truck weekends at local wineries, it’s the perfect season to unwind and experience Palisade at a slower, more intimate pace.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Winter & Early Spring (November- March)

MORNING: SKIING OR SNOWBOARDING AT POWDERHORN MOUNTAIN RESORT

• Just 45 minutes from Palisade, Powderhorn Mountain Resort offers uncrowded slopes with incredible valley views.

• Family-Friendly Alternative: Enroll the kids in a ski lesson or opt for a guided snowshoeing experience.

AFTERNOON: ADVENTURE IN THE GRAND VALLEY

• Take a guided UTV tour or rent your own from Adrenaline Driven Adventures. Ride the technical trails of North Desert OHV Area for adrenaline-pumping climbs and descents.

• Family-Friendly Alternative: Visit SunCrest Orchard Alpacas for a hands-on experience with adorable alpacas.

EVENING: POUR A GLASS & RELAX

• Head to The Ordinary Fellow Winery or Colterris Collections Winery, which host food trucks on weekends for a relaxed, delicious meal or checkout Palisade Pizza & Pour House for artisanal pies and a giant self-serve tap wall.

PACKING TIPS:

Water & Electrolytes – the dry climate can dehydrate you fast!

Layered Clothing – mornings can be cold, but afternoons warm up quickly.

Sun Protection – even in winter, the high-altitude sun is intense. Gear for Each Activity – rentals are available for bikes, UTVs, paddleboards, skis and more!

Are Right Around the Corner

Only 27 miles from Palisade Take I-70 to Exit 49

Located in the heart of Colorado’s Grand Mesa, Powderhorn is known for spring mountain owers, mild summer temperatures, vibrant fall colors, and 250 inches of annual snowfall. Avoid the crowds of large resorts and experience the local mountain with professional instruction, quality rentals, and trails from beginner to expert.

PALISADE PLUNGE

>>> Before You Take The Plunge

• BE PREPARED TO PEDAL. A LOT. The course has black diamond sections and there are a lot of quick ups and downs, blind corners, sandy road beds, extreme exposure and even though the total descent is over 6,000 ft. calling it a ‘Plunge’ is VERY deceiving.

• START FROM SHIRTTAIL unless you’re an advanced + rider and prepared for “epic brutality.”

• BRING LOTS OF WATER. Think you’ve got enough? Pack more. There are no water stations along the way.

• GET AN EARLY START. The full ride will take 5-6 hours for most experienced riders. It is not uncommon for afternoon temperatures to be in the high 90’s during the summer months. July and August temperatures can even reach the low hundreds.

Stats From Mesa Top

• START: MESA TOP TRAILHEAD

• MILEAGE : 32 MILES

• ELEVATION GAIN : 1,745FT

• ELEVATION LOSS : 7,730FT

• ELEVATION HIGH : 10,780 FT

Stats From Shirttail

• START: SHIRTTAIL POINT TRAILHEAD

• MILEAGE : 23 MILES

• ELEVATION GAIN : 1,470FT

• ELEVATION LOSS : 6,591FT

• ELEVATION HIGH : 9,800 FT

• SHUTTLE SERVICE is highly recommended. It’s an hour+ drive up to retrieve your vehicle.

• HONOR THE HARD WORK that went into building the trail and keep yourself safe. Do not ride the trail during, or recently after, inclement weather.

• THE BIKE MATTERS. Janky bikes will get destroyed and leave you stranded. E-Bikes are prohibited.

• STAY THE COURSE. Do not attempt to take shortcuts or utilize access roads as they may take you further from your destination. Cell service is limited to non-existent.Pay attention to trail signs and use a GPS communication device.

• ALWAYS TELL SOMEONE you’re going. Better yet? Don’t ride alone.

The Plunge is closed from Dec. 1st - May 1st every year.

PALISADE Art Scene

GALLERIES

Palisade is widely known for its creative atmosphere, starting with the galleries. The Blue Pig and the Craig Gallery are home to over 80 local artists. Discover the area’s fine art, jewelry, textiles, glass, ceramics and more.

OUTDOOR PUBLIC SCULPTURE

Palisade Art Vision, PAV, now in its 9th season, exhibits 6 to 10 new sculptures along with a dozen permanent pieces. Most pieces are on Third and Main St. But don’t miss the iconic Lyle Nichols’ sculptures around town and the Fruit & Wine Trail. They’ll make you smile.

This iconic watering hole has garnered international acclaim, becoming a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic dive bar experience.

Upon entering The Liv, patrons are immediately enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The rustic charm of its long, old-time wooden bar, complemented by the everflowing Palisade Peach on tap, offers a nostalgic nod to its storied past. The free popcorn and the camaraderie among locals and visitors

It’s the Old West with cowboys that still come in to actually talk to people in person. It’s the best... definitely worth the stop off the interstate.” (Google Review by Hofbrauhomee)

A visit to The Liv would be incomplete without sampling their “World Famous” housemade pickle vodka shots. This unique concoction has become a signature offering, enticing both the curious

and the seasoned palate. For those looking to take a piece of the experience home, these pickle shots are available to-go in 16-ounce and 32-ounce jars .

Entertainment is at the heart of The Liv’s appeal. With live music events, regular karaoke nights, and pool tables, there’s never a dull moment. The lively vibe ensures that whether you’re a local or a traveler, you’re bound to have a memorable time.

The staff at The Liv are more than just employees; they’re the heartbeat of the establishment. Known for their friendliness and exceptional service, bartenders like Kaitey ensure that every guest feels right at home. The sense of family among the crew is palpable, making it a welcoming environment for all.

“IT’S THE BEST... DEFINITELY WORTH THE STOP OFF THE INTERSTATE.”

In a town as humble and charming as Palisade, The Palisade Livery Saloon stands out with authentic Western hospitality. Whether you’re passing through or planning an extended stay, make sure to stop by The Liv, savor a pickle shot, and share a story or two with the locals. It’s an experience that embodies the true essence of the American West.
