Technology has radically transformed everything about how we do business. The way we connect has changed so significantly that the survival of our businesses depends on our ability to adapt and the relevance of our Chamber depends on our ability to innovate. As the 2014 Chairman of the Malibu Chamber of Commerce, I look forward to leading our organization into the future together with the dynamic group of professionals who make up our passionate, dedicated, and driven Board of Directors. My mission during 2014 is to encourage our Malibu business community to plug-in to our Chamber and discover the power of our synergy through active engagement. Being an entrepreneur and local business owner, I appreciate the key benefits of joining our membership for a healthy business environment. Living the dream of working in iconic Malibu with our pristine beaches, majestic mountains, and quintessential Californian lifestyle, we are all part of something bigger than our individual brands; We are Malibu. That is why we, as a Chamber, are taking what we do well, and asking how we can do it even better. We are committed to improving our Malibu business community through collaboration on our many programs and events. My personal favorite focus this year is taking our shop local initiative, “Shop the Bu” to the next level. We are developing it to empower our membership, Malibu residents, and visitors alike to engage in an ongoing social media campaign that fosters a connectivity that is essential to defining who we are as a business community. To go viral, we will need everyone to participate! In addition, we will continue to serve as a resource for Education and Advocacy to support our membership. Our Malibu Chamber of Commerce has a powerful voice on significant issues affecting Malibu Business. Thank you for contributing to it and making it worth listening to.

hen Malibu’s first overseas tourist arrived in 1542, Juan Cabrillo must have been impressed by the beauty of the scene he beheld: the graceful roll of the waves, the glimmering white sand beaches, the call of thousands of sea birds in the peaceful lagoon, all framed by the steeply rising mountain peaks beyond. Today, 471 years later, Cabrillo would be pleased to know that the picturesque spot he discovered went on to become one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the world – a thriving community by the sea renowned for its culture of surf, sand, sun, and Hollywood Stars. As Mark Persson, Executive Director of the Mailbu Chamber of Commerce points out, ‘For years people have been seduced by the name, Malibu.’ Movies and television shows have been made about it. There’s a car named after it. There’s even a Barbie doll named after it! But what people may not realize is that 6

Malibu is also a community, and true Malibuites celebrate their town. They know what a wonderful place this is to live in and raise their families – not in an entitled, exclusive way, but in a way that builds real personal relationships. Their children go to school here, and they shop locally. They care about Malibu's environment - the ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains are their back yards. Our citizens frequent those businesses in Malibu who feel the same. Founded in 1948 with a charter membership of 12 local businesses, the Malibu Chamber of Commerce, Persson says proudly, has grown into a dynamic organization with a growing membership. “Our Chamber provides us the opportunity to come together to form mutually beneficial partnerships based on relationship building, communication and problem solving,” says Chairman Christine Hameline. “Together, we are taking an active role in building the future of Malibu.”

“The Chamber is an organization that brings together groups, businesses, and individuals who can all benefit from a personal sense of community.” Mark Persson, Executive Director, Malibu Chamber of Commerce

The fact is there’s a lot more to Malibu than learning how to shoot the curl, stuff a wild bikini, or visit the spot where Jim Rockford (James Garner) parked his trailer. Certainly the city is renowned for its 27 miles of beaches and its world famous Colony, but it is also a district that reaches all the way to the San Fernando Valley and the Ventura County line. Malibu is home to one of the best educational institutions in the country — Pepperdine University. There are fine dining establishments such as Nikita, Geoffrey’s, and the Saddlepeak Lodge. But there are also the myriads shopping venues that are necessary to support any bustling community: the laundries, hardware stores, gas stations, realtors, markets, etc. That’s the combination that makes Malibu a real community and not just the star of a hundred movies and TV shows. It’s also why the role played by the Malibu Chamber of Commerce is so important. 8

“The Chamber is an organization that brings together groups, businesses, and individuals who can all benefit from a personal sense of community,” Persson explains. “The oldest form of business is people talking to one another. If you are a businessperson who is great at what you do, but you don’t know how to take your business to the next level, the Chamber is here to help. That’s our job, providing information and forming connections.” Education, also plays an important part in the Chamber’s activities. “We keep our membership informed on important issues and new technologies through workshops, committee meetings and a special online Master’s Program that is free for members.” Hameline says. “The website is very important,” Persson says. “It offers residents, Chamber members, and potential visitors to Malibu real-time information, whether it’s about the latest laws regarding business or how to take a self-guided tour of our ever-expanding Wine Trail. Our

Malibu Chamber of Commerce Business Directory & Community Guide

goal is to be the best possible resource organization for businesses, residents, and visitors.” On the Malibu Chamber of Commerce website, Hameline points out, you can always find event listings, whether it’s about the 43rd Annual Arts Festival or a local performance at Malibu Playhouse. You can join committees and find detailed information about the times and locations of meetings. You can view useful coupon offers, enjoy the benefits of Chamber membership, and discover the great advantages to be had by “Shopping the Bu.” One of the projects the Chamber has in the works for 2014, says Persson, is building an interactive WineTrail map. It will include real-time information on where to sip, dine and purchase local wines. The Chamber also plans to continue its “Twelve Days of Commerce” program (launched in 2012), which highlights local businesses during the holiday season and makes special offers available to shoppers. “We’re always open to taking suggestions from members on how we can better serve the community,” says Persson. “At the Malibu Chamber of Commerce, it’s all about building relationships, staying informed and thinking outside the pyramid.”

Charm

irresistable

It doesn’t take a genius to understand why Malibu has an irresistible charm. Its rugged, rural beauty is unsurpassed and its wide, sandy beaches captivate residents and visitors alike with pristine ocean views. The Malibu Chamber of Commerce invites you to explore Malibu, and we know that once you’re here, you will see just how special Malibu truly is. Malibu is a closely-knit residential community characterized by its carefully preserved rural atmosphere. Malibu’s combined incorporated and unincorporated areas cover approximately 45,000 acres, is 27 miles long and one to eight miles wide. Within these boundaries are a variety of climates and terrain including beaches, mesas, and canyons that create a unique environment. The population is approximately 13,000. There’s Much More to Malibu than the City Itself When people talk about Malibu, they’re often referring to much more than the city itself - they’re talking about the beautiful coast, which encompasses 27 12

miles and all of the nature, history, and recreational opportunities that go along with a visit here. As a visitor, here are a few things you’ll want to know about the Malibu area. There’s History Everywhere History abounds in Malibu, which was originally settled by the Chumash, Native Americans, whose territory extended loosely from the San Joaquin Valley to San Luis Obispo to Malibu, as well as several islands off the southern coast of California. They named it “Humaliwo” or “the surf sounds loudly.” Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo is believed to have moored at Malibu Lagoon, at the mouth of Malibu Creek, to obtain fresh water in 1542. The Spanish presence returned with the California mission system, and the area was part of Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit – a 13,000-acre land grant – in 1802. That ranch passed intact to Frederick Hastings Rindge in 1891. He and his widow, Rhoda May Rindge, guarded their privacy zealously by hiring guards to evict all trespassers and

fighting a lengthy court battle to prevent the building of a Southern Pacific railroad line. Few roads even entered the area before 1929, when the state won another court case and built what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway. By then, May Rindge was forced to subdivide her property and begin selling and leasing lots. The Rindge house, known as the Adamson House (a National Register of Historic Places site and California Historical Landmark), is now part of Malibu Creek State Park and is situated between Malibu Lagoon State Beach and Surfrider Beach, beside the Malibu Pier that was originally built for the family yacht. In 1926, in an effort to avoid selling land to stave off insolvency, Rhoda May Rindge created a small ceramic tile factory. At its height, Malibu Potteries employed over 100 workers, and produced decorative tiles which furnish many Los Angeles-area public buildings and Beverly Hills residences. Malibu Colony was one of the first areas inhabited after Malibu was opened to the public in 1929 and it is one of Malibu’s most famous districts. It is located south of Malibu Road and the Pacific Coast Highway, west of Malibu Lagoon State Beach, and east of Malibu Bluffs Park (formerly a state park). Initially, May Rindge kept control of Malibu Beach, allowing a few wealthy Hollywood stars to build vacation homes. Nearly a decade later, money woes forced Rindge to sell the land, and the Colony was born. Long known as a popular private enclave for wealthy celebrities, the Malibu Colony today is a gated community, with multi-million dollar homes on small lots. The Weather is Awesome You’ll need your sunscreen because the weather here is bright and beautiful, even when it’s cold outside. January-April weather averages in the 60’s, with possible rain. However, May usually brings beauty in the daytime, (although we sometimes have ‘May Gray’) going into 40-50 degrees in the evening.

A sweatshirt or light jacket will usually cover your needs. In June, residents call it ‘June Gloom,’ because of the normal fog that rolls in & out throughout the month. June usually averages 66 degrees in the day and 56 degrees in the evening.

The Beaches are Awesome too! The area’s beaches are large and family-friendly with ample opportunities for surfing, kayaking, scuba diving and other recreational activities. The beaches of Malibu are well regarded locally. For example, Zuma Beach is a pristine family-friendly beach with plenty of parking, beach cafes to purchase food at, and clean bathroom and shower facilities. There are also plenty of lifeguards with watchful eyes on the waters, ensuring everyone’s safety. The surroundings are beautiful & serene and it is nearly impossible not to feel at peace when sitting in a beach

chair, watching children play. The long waves of Surfrider Beach, adjacent to the Adamson’s House and Malibu Lagoon, draw a steady beach and surfer crowd. Check out our “Weekend Getaways in Malibu” on page 33 to plan where you want to take the family when you’re not lounging at one of the area’s many beaches. You Might See Celebrities The Malibu is adjacent and west of Hollywood. Malibu has been used as a location or setting for many films, television programs, and

music videos. Surfrider Beach was home to Gidget, and other surfing movies of the 1960s. Charlie’s Angels beach house was located in Malibu. The residence can also be seen in the first scene after the opening theme song of Beach Blanket Bingo. Important scenes in the Planet of the Apes series were filmed at Point Dume. For an entire summer during the filming, the scale replica of the Statue of Liberty from the famous closing scene lay buried at the Southern end of Pirate’s Cove. The hero’s trailer in The Rockford Files was parked by the Paradise Cove Pier. Love American Style and The Mod Squad are among many TV series and commercials filmed in Paradise Cove. In the 2008 movie Iron Man, Tony Stark’s home is located in Malibu. Malibu is setting for the television series Two and a Half Men. Fictional teen star Hannah Montana/Miley Stewart (portrayed by Miley Cyrus) and her father Robbie Ray Stewart (portrayed by Billy Ray Cyrus) live in Malibu on the Disney Channel Original Series, Hannah Montana. There have also been multiple ‘Music Videos’ shot in Malibu.

Malibu Beaches Like all California beaches, Malibu beaches are technically public land below the mean high tide line. Many large public beaches (Zuma Beach, Surfrider Beach) are easy to access, but such access is sometimes limited in some of the smaller and more remote beaches. Some Malibu beaches are private, such as Paradise Cove, which charges an entrance fee to keep the crowds at bay. Access to most all Malibu beaches can be obtained after a bit of a walk. Getty Villa Art Museum Getty Villa, an art museum that is part of the J. Paul Getty Museum, is located just outside the Malibu city limits. The Museum at the Getty Villa houses Getty’s collections of antiquities, sculptures, art pieces and cultural artifacts of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. Please call to schedule your visit in advance.

There are many points of access to the Backbone Trail System scattered throughout the local canyons, as well as a variety of smaller, local trail-heads.

The unique microclimates of the region are producing some one-of-a-kind world-class wines that are sweeping awards and delighting palates in California and beyond. Malibu winemakers are proud of their craft. And their hard work and commitment to quality is gaining recognition. In competitions, undiscovered Malibu wines are being honored alongside some of the most widely recognized vineyard names in the world. And the Malibu wine success story is only beginning. The region is in the final stages of receiving its official Malibu Coast AVA designation, a significant move in raising consumer 20

awareness and credibility to the region in the area of wine growing. Boutique vineyards are popping up across the landscape, and what Malibu winemakers have in common is their artisanship and their desire for the products they produce to reflect authenticity and a true sense of place. A drive along Malibu’s Wine Trail is a visual treat. Before you take to the road, stop by the Malibu Chamber of Commerce (23805 Stuart Ranch Road, Suite 105) for information, local maps and insider tips. Then cruise the trail to indulge in the stunning scenery and gain appreciation for the unique environment and conditions that contribute to the character of Malibu wines.

study its habitat needs and range of its territory. It is rare to see these nocturnal predators but tracks have been discovered on solitary trails. Some of the larger raptors, or birds of prey, can often be seen soaring high overhead riding the hot air thermals. These include the red-tailed hawk, turkey vulture or, perhaps, you could even catch a rare sighting of a golden eagle. Wildlife observation is one the most popular outdoor activities and Malibu Lagoon is home to numerous aquatic and shore birds making it a great site for bird watching. The native Chaparral plant community covers the steep mountain hillsides, water-loving sycamore trees and thick stands of poison oak hug the steep canyon stream beds, while the canyon bottoms offer a shady oak woodland setting. In the spring months, visitors can usually enjoy the beauty of colorful wildflowers in bloom and cascading waterfalls. Over 150 wildflower species can be seen in bloom each spring along the hiking trails! However, low annual rainfall and the resulting drought-like conditions have impacted the abundance of color and reduced stream flows in recent years. Although fire is a natural part of the chaparral ecosystem, human impact has caused an increase in the frequency of destructive wildfires. It is important to know and practice fire use safety procedures when visiting the mountain parks and trails. Smoking is prohibited on the trails and campfires are often not allowed due to high fire danger weather conditions. Activities for you to enjoy range from a light morning hike through the chaparral hillsides to a more daring rock climbing experience. Other activities can

Safety Considerations and Environmental Hazards Plan your visit to the mountains with safety in mind. Environmental hazards such as too much sun, exposure to poison oak or a rattlesnake encounter, and getting caught out late in the cool evenings without adequate clothing can ruin your experience. Learn how to identify both rattlesnakes and poison oak. Rattlesnakes are not fond of humans and would rather retreat than 30

attack so give them space to move on their way. Stay on the trail and avoid stepping or putting hands where you cannot see. As for poison oak, the rule is; “leaflets of three, let it be”! Carry and drink plenty of water, bring extra food or trail snacks, and dress according to the weather and seasonal temperature ranges. Wear a sun hat. A light sweater or windbreaker is recommended for changing weather conditions. Running shoes or sturdy hiking boots are best for the trail. Cell phone reception is very inconsistent in the canyons and batteries don’t last. Don’t rely on your cell phone to save the day! Remember, you are visiting a protected wilderness park area so please respect park rules and other trail users. Not feeding wildlife, picking wildflowers, or leaving trash are common sense rules to follow. Pack out what you pack in and leave the area nicer than the way you found it!

include driving for pleasure along scenic routes like Mulholland Highway, picnicking, camping, bicycle touring, horseback riding, mountain bike riding, trail running, geocaching, nature study and much more. Coastal and beach activities include discovering ocean life during a low tide visit to Leo Carrillo State Park tide pool areas, exploring the coastal caves, or hiking along the bluffs and watching the colorful show of kiteboarders and windsurfers dancing across the waves. The inland campground area also offers extensive backcountry hiking trails. The Point Dume Nature Preserve contains a fairly accessible boardwalk path about one mile in length with some limited disabled parking spaces available. These high bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean offer spectacular views of the entire Santa Monica Bay, Channel Islands and colorful blooms of the unique giant coreopsis wildflowers. Visitors can view marine mammals such as dolphins and humpback whales, or time your visit to catch the December to mid April migration period of the California Grey Whale! Ocean fishing off Malibu Pier is a popular low cost activity and surf casting from shore can be a fun challenge. Boat rentals and gear are also available or you can join a chartered crew for deep sea sport fishing off shore. Adventurous souls can explore the kelp beds and reefs in an ocean kayak, free dive (snorkel) or SCUBA dive, or try your hand at stand up paddle boarding (SUP), windsurfing, and, of course, ride the waves on a short board or body surf at popular Zuma Beach! There are many opportunities for people to enjoy their leisure time outdoors when visiting Malibu. Come out to explore your local mountains and beaches and enjoy nature’s playground! Outstanding Education in

The quality of life enjoyed in Malibu is complemented by an outstanding education system that spans from pre-K to postgraduate. Malibu is part of the Santa MonicaMalibu Unified School District, though efforts are underway to create an independent district. Advocates for Malibu Public Schools (AMPS) is a community of concerned residents with the mission of creating an independent Malibu School District dedicated to excellence in education for the Malibu

community. An independent district would allow Malibu to bring its schools to the forefront of educational innovation, technology and student focus. AMPS and its members educate Malibu and Santa Monica parents, teachers, community leaders, neighbors and friends about how an independent Malibu School District would benefit every student in both communities. Currently three public elementary schools serve Malibu’s youngest students. Malibu Middle School and Malibu High School continue the educational track. Malibu High School consistently records the highest SAT scores in the district and also boasts award-winning performing arts programs. For families that prefer private education, Viewpoint School offers a nondenominational learning environment with individualized attention for K-12 students and a challenging academic program that emphasizes excellence and achievement. Making a Difference in Malibu

Prosperity and affluence may dominate Malibu’s image, but those who live here also take great pride in investing in their community. Malibu residents are among America’s most generous. The city ranks in the top 10% of giving cities in the United States, based on total contributions to charities. Malibu is home to more than 175 non-profits, with missions ranging from educational to environmental to meeting the needs of those in poverty. Non-profit educational resources include the Muse School, which teaches a local, global and environmental approach to education, and Our Lady of Malibu School, known for excellence in K-8 God-centered Catholic education. Pepperdine University operates on a mission of service, purpose and leadership, and contributes significantly to the community’s culture and arts. Environmental causes are well represented with organizations like the California Wildlife Center working to protect local wildlife through rehabilitation, education and conservation. And they are making a difference. Local non-profit World Team Now helped the City of Malibu become the first coastal city in the United States to install J1772 electric vehicle chargers. These free public chargers are paving the way for greater adoption of electric vehicles like the Tesla and Nissan’s Leaf. The Shalom Institute Camp and Conference Center is a secret gem, providing therapeutic horseback riding programs for children and adults. It’s one of the many camps and religious centers that welcome all, regardless of beliefs. For the area’s less fortunate residents, the Malibu Farmers Market, operated by the Cornucopia Foundation and Malibu Community Labor Exchange extend a helping hand to meet basic needs. There is even a non-profit to help area non-profits. EarthWays helps incubate non-profit organizations providing bookkeeping and accounting services to help the charities be more successful. Malibu non-profits are making a difference in their own community and beyond. They are serving a broad range of needs and are greatly valued and supported as a strong and significant element of Malibu’s vibrant mosaic. The Malibu Chamber of Commerce is a great non-profit resource to help area businesses connect with the community and also an excellent hub for those interested in finding opportunities to give back to Malibu.
