28 HOW PASSION DRIVES SUCCESS IN SMALL BUSINESSES
The idea that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life is credited to many men, including Confucius, Mark Twain, and Marc Anthony. Whoever originally said it or didn’t doesn’t matter. They all make a great point.
40 THE NEIGHBORHOODS AND BUSINESSES OF MANHATTAN BEACH
Manhattan Beach’s four square miles include four distinct neighborhoods, all offering a different feel.
60 YOUNG VISIONARIES
The South Bay boasts some of the best public schools in the country, but there’s always more to learn. Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) is an extracurricular club for students in grades 6-12 aimed at developing business, public speaking, and entrepreneurial skills.

Welcome to the Best Coastal Community in Southern California, Manhattan Beach! Whether you live in, work in, or are visiting Manhattan Beach, you have found a beautiful place where our pristine public beach welcomes guests year-round. Residents take pride in their property and the beaches. Local Businesses range from charming independently owned and operated boutiques to world-class restaurants and shopping, to the salty old dive bars and pancake houses that greet sandy feet every day. The water quality is amazing and creates the crystal blue sparkle residents and visitors enjoy all year. The sea life loves it too. It’s not unusual to catch a daily glimpse of dolphins, or an occasional sea lion, surfing the waves.
The sunsets in Manhattan Beach are stunning, particularly in the fall and winter months. Equally impressive is the serenity of the early mornings. The mist on the ocean, the way the rising sun illuminates the beach and ocean or a serene early morning walk, ride, or jog along the Strand. It’s the perfect way to start the day. If you are a runner, you might enjoy the woodchip path on the greenbelt that stretches from the very Northern end of the City to the Southern tip, where it merges into Hermosa Beach. If a park is more your speed, there are plenty to choose from; Sand Dune Park, Bruce’s Beach, Polliwog Park, Live Oak, and Manhattan Heights… they each offer different amenities, views, and experiences. Questions? Need more information? Don’t know where to start? Planning your next business move, a vacation, wedding, or special event? We have answers and advice, and we can connect you with the best choices, businesses, and people to make your experience just perfect. Stop by, call, follow us, or check out our website for effective resources, tips, and where to start planning your next venture. Let us be a part of your trip or next journey. ROUNDHOUSE AQUARIUM MANHATTAN BEACH PIER
Did You Know… the roundhouse at the end of our iconic pier is an aquarium? The nonprofit education-based aquarium recently underwent a $4M renovation. More than 100 SoCal-native aquatic animals live there, creatures like moon jellies, octopus, moray eels, and lobsters. Their interactive touch tank is the highlight, a low-to-the-ground water tank where visitors can engage with sea stars, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and sea snails. Oceanographic Teaching Stations, Inc. uses kinesthetic, hands-on interactive experiences with marine life to learn about conservation and stewardship. Come see for yourself Monday-Friday 2-7pm and Saturday/Sunday 10am-7pm.

BEACH
EL PORTO SURFING
Anything west of Highland once you’re north of Rosecrans El Porto offers unrivaled surf and local staples. This little slice of quiet and originality feels wholly different from the rest of Manhattan Beach. The fast and powerful ocean break creates excellent opportunities to catch a wave, while the sandy ocean floor provides a soft wipeout landing. The steep terrain of El Porto makes for killer panoramic views of adjacent cities, surrounding mountains, and endless Pacific waters. Pancho’s and OB’s are laid back and fun; Fish Bar is a great place for a date, and M & Love is a newer health restaurant that makes a superb gluten-free bagel.
THE LIGHT GATE HIGHLAND AND 15TH, JUST NORTH OF THE MANHATTAN BEACH LIBRARY
Don’t miss the 15-ft. tall prismatic glass keyhole echoing the sun’s light, changing hues by the minute and angle. The panes morph and reflect brilliant fuchsias, lime greens, and royal purples, making for a supernaturally lit selfie. The city commissioned Mags Harries and Lajos Héder to create the piece to celebrate the city’s centennial in 2012. The Light Gate tszujes
the courtyard of our stunningly chic glass library (which is also worth a pop-in if you have the time).
Twice a year, on January 27th and November 14th, the sun sets directly centered in the keyhole. What happens when the sun unlocks the key to Manhattan Beach? It’s a local secret; you’ll just have to discover yourself.

Another public education nonprofit bent toward Earth-friendly gardening techniques, MBBG teaches water conservation, native plant selection, and sustainable gardening. Along with doing the important work of responsibly beautifying our fair city, MBBG provides a safe environment for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. HOW PASSION DRIVES SUCCESS IN SMALL BUSINESSES
The idea that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life is credited to many men, including Confucius, Mark Twain, and Marc Anthony. Whoever originally said it or didn’t doesn’t matter. They all make a great point. There’s purpose and passion that fuel you when you love what you do. It gives a new meaning to labor of love. Business owners all over Manhattan Beach weave intention, mindfulness, and mission throughout their work. Let’s get to know a few of those small business people who practice what they preach, love what they do, and execute every day with mindful intention.

MIKE GARCIA ENVIROSCAPE LA ENVIROSCAPELA.COM
Mike Garcia is extremely passionate about his profession. It’s more than a job; it’s earth-saving stuff. Mike creates lush landscapes, working with the most gorgeous plants and materials earth has to offer. But for him, Enviroscape isn’t about pairing pretty colors together or highlighting a home’s architecture with design-complementary plants. “For me, what I do isn’t about the pay. It’s about saving the planet.” Mike places conservationism, sustainability, and pollination at the forefront of every project. He’s an integral part of the Manhattan Beach Botanical Gardens (see more on Page 16). The butterfly house there stores hundreds of gallons of rainwater; the garden provides a stunning place to roam, promotes vital pollination, and helps reduce Manhattan Beach’s carbon footprint right inside Polliwog Park. The flora Mike uses facilitates a healthier environment; native plants absorb
more carbon dioxide and provide better habitats for local fauna than invasive plants. For instance, the Ginkgo Biloba which is seen all over the South Bay is native to China. Its minimalist look lends itself to contemporary architecture, but it only provides a hospitable environment for four types of caterpillars. The native California Oak attracts up to 500 different types of caterpillars! Mike is also a big proponent of giving up grass in Southern California. “Lawns require sprayed chemicals; nature isn’t happy about that. The lawn is also the largest irrigated crop in the US, using up gallons of water daily. By ditching the lawn and putting in native plants, you’re sequestering carbon, you’re contributing to pollinators like nobody’s business, and you’re actually helping to save the planet.”

STEPHANIE COCHRANE THE WASTE LESS SHOP THEWASTELESSSHOP.COM
Stephanie Cochrane, owner of The Waste Less Shop on Highland in El Porto, has been living and breathing her mission from a young age. The Zero-Waste Lifestyle boutique’s mission is to empower and inspire people to create small sustainable shifts in their lives that will create a positive impact in the world. “As a child,” Stephanie says, “I had a deep love for nature. As I got older, I realized that protecting the planet I loved was going to be a foundational part of my life. I didn’t realize that love would transition into a business until I started making sustainable swaps to reduce the waste and toxins in my household. I felt frustrated that I couldn’t get everything in one place. I started The Waste Less Shop to make it easier for consumers like myself to live with smaller footprints without sacrificing quality or convenience. I feel so blessed to be walking in my purpose each day through a career that benefits humanity.” By living her purpose,
mindfulness comes naturally. “Mindfulness is an integral part of our mission. We intentionally source from small businesses who take the extra steps to ensure their products are doing as little harm to our planet and people as possible. A lot of care and consideration goes into where something comes from, how long it can be used for, and what happens to it after use.” Manhattan Beach also helps center Stephanie, reminding her the lessons we all can learn from the planet. “Seeing the ocean every day and being able to connect with Mother Earth helps remind me of my purpose and fills me with peace. The ocean does not worry about yesterday or tomorrow; the ocean just is.”

LORI FORD GUM TREE CAFE GUMTREELA.COM
Mindfulness can mean many things. Often it refers to meditation, goal-setting, and being present. And while all those are wonderful things, sometimes mindfulness manifests in a person intrinsically embodying their work, understanding something so fully that they subconsciously flow with the tide. One of Manhattan Beach’s most beloved stores, Gum Tree, is the perfect example of a mindful owner. “For as long as I can remember,” Co-Owner Lori Ford says, “I wanted to have a store in an old house.” Lori and her husband Will wanted to stage their entire shop like a real house, having customers walk through a mock home and purchase items that brought them joy. On a whim, Lori added a few choice jewelry pieces to the preexisting case. “I thought it would be home decor; I didn’t think it would turn into gifts. But now, almost every invoice has a piece of jewelry on it.” Lori absorbed the overwhelming generosity of her community; almost every customer visited her shop for someone else rather than themselves. So Gum Tree
seamlessly morphed into a gift shop, a beautiful store full of beautiful things for people who are loved. The Rose Apothecary-esque boutique serves both Hermosa and Manhattan Beach, and the creative buying genius behind it all is Lori. She stocks the shelves with items she wants. She’s so in tune with her customers and our community that she doesn’t look at reports or follow the latest trend. Lori is a tastemaker beautifying the South Bay one gift basket at a time. “I just buy what I like! There is no numbers-crunching science behind it. Every time I bought something I wasn’t totally into, it didn’t work.” Lori’s intuition leads the charge at Gum Tree.

TORII MANHATTAN E-BIKES
MBEBIKE.COM
The best businesses are born from need, which is exactly how Tommy Torii began Manhattan Beach E-Bike Rentals in North Manhattan. As a surfer who wanted to cut down on drive/gas time, he bought an E-bike to get to and from the beach to his home at the top of Rosecrans hill (brutal). A few months later, he and his wife Christine were converted E-bike enthusiasts with a storefront in Manhattan Beach. “E-bikes have a low environmental impact,” Tommy says. “The charge is just a regular outlet so it’s not a crazy power surge. There’s no parking issue, which is just nice (and better for our city). But the biggest satisfaction is the experience that the riders have. People with different levels of fitness can ride together.” Professional or recreational bikers can now take their spouse or kids along for the ride without nearly killing them. Older folks who’ve all but given up biking can now get out there and go for miles. It spawns activity and saves the planet - win-win. “E-bikes are getting people out there and moving their legs. Just by nature of that, it’s getting America healthier. People with knee problems are able to go all the way to Venice. That’s a super big plus; mostly everybody can enjoy an electric bike.” That said - Tommy puts safety first always. Protect the noggin with a
helmet; don’t go too fast; make sure you know the bike well before you take off. Tommy also prioritizes environmental friendliness; his company is a part of the Green Business network of Manhattan Beach. They also give back to the eco-friendly nonprofits, a whole 1% of gross revenue through 1% For The Planet. A little bike shop born during Covid is now wholly making a difference in the lives of many; now that is mindful business.

TOMMY
“I don’t think of myself as being in the metal and stone business. I see myself as having the privilege to participate in a very special and sacred part of a person’s life journey. They are selecting or creating a piece of jewelry that will symbolize their love and desire to spend the rest of their lives together in communion. Such a lofty event deserves a special experience. I encourage clients, after pouring a glass of champagne, to enjoy the delightful fragrance of essential oils and fully arrive into this space. Allow all thoughts and concerns to flow by and enter a space of stillness and connection. Free from all preconceived notions. A place of pure uninhibited intuition. From there, I believe the client will make the best decision coming from their highest and truest self. My job is only to provide a warm, loving, and safe space with an appropriate selection and some expertise. The perfect stone in the ideal setting for that person simply and elegantly appears”. MB

40 I MANHATTAN BEACH COMMUNITY & DESTINATION GUIDE THE NEIGHBORHOODS AND BUSINESSES OF MANHATTAN BEACH FOUR SQUARE MILES • FOUR UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOODS
anhattan Beach’s four square miles include four distinct neighborhoods, all offering a different feel. The Tree Section, lined with shady oaks and featuring no sidewalks, provides a slower, more suburban feel. East Manhattan Beach, made up of larger lots with bigger homes, boasts sweeping city views. The Hill Section flaunts some of the most spectacular architecture in the city with lush, sustainable landscapes and panoramic ocean views. And, of course,
The Sand Section, with its walkability and oceanfront mansions, rounds out the four as the most compact and coveted neighborhood in the South Bay.
Each of the four sections offers different lifestyles, speeds, views, lot sizes, house structures, street characteristics, and school districts. Few cities of our small size and only 36,000 residents have such clearly defined neighborhoods. In addition to our iconic pier, sprawling beaches, and bustling downtown - the four neighborhoods are a significant part of what makes Manhattan Beach unique.
EAST MANHATTAN BEACH
Because East Manhattan encompasses the most considerable amount of land, there’s room for mega-lot homes and spacious floorplans. Within the East Manhattan limits, distinct sub-neighborhoods developed over the years. Residents covet the Mira Costa neighborhood for its cityscapes and walkability to the high school. Many families relocate before or during their children’s high school years for convenience and community connection.
IT’S ALL ABOUT LOCATION
East Manhattan Beach is considered part of a large sub-neighborhood known for its general proximity vicinity to Mira Costa that also includes its own subsections.
The street grid is pretty uniform, even boring, but the 7,500 sq. ft. lot sizes are prized.
East Manhattan includes the Poets Section - a series of streets named for greats like Longfellow, Keats, and Tennyson. It’s the little-known “Bel Air of Manhattan Beach.” Tucked at the bottom of the Longfellow hill, massive lots and hideaway homes nestle under leafy canopies. It feels quite separate from the rest of the city. Just a few miles away, the gated Manhattan Village offers extra privacy. Nearby, two other post-war tract housing developments - Liberty Village and Manhattan Heights - round out the various residential communities of East Manhattan. With ample space and accessibility, East Manhattan boasts most of MB’s business. PCH/Sepulveda - our longest thoroughfare - with its proximity to the freeways and accessibility to locals makes East Manhattan the likely hub of commerce. The Sepulveda Corridor, as it’s known, has experienced upgrades and redevelopment over the last five years. Two Guns Coffee upped the ante on Goat Hill, Target and Toyota are corporate staples, Manhattan Medical Center is rapidly filling with essential tenants, and GROW offers truly healthful grocery options to health-conscious Manhattanites.

The Manhattan Village received a major facelift and is continuing to expand. It was already home to top retailers such as Apple, Macy’s, Sephora, and Anthropologie. Now there’s an entire parking garage (complete with car charging stations), more stores, and more room to get your retail therapy in. They’ve also added and revamped their dining options, adding beloveds like Sweet Green, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, and Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee. Check our Dining Section on 70 for more. The mall is luxurious and chic but laid back and homey - a perfect, Manhattan Beach-esque marriage.
The assortment of companies, both local and global, add to the patchwork of our city’s character, each contributing something unique and important to the commercial landscape of Manhattan Beach. The compilation of old and new businesses in East Manhattan, from mom-and-pop shops to international enterprises, elevates Manhattan Beach from a simple beach city to a thriving economic ecosystem.
THE TREE SECTION
The Tree Section was so named for its streetsPine, Elm, Oak, and Palm, to name a few - but the name also has historical roots. Rosecrans Avenue, which runs along the northern border of the city and most of the Tree Section, was once lined on either side by stately rows of Eucalyptus trees. Before significant development, trees outnumbered homes in the Tree Section.
The Tree Section includes several sub-neighborhoods, mainly centered around the schools. The areas surrounding Pacific, American Martyrs, and Grand View all have distinct vibes. Because of this, the Tree Section is home to many young families. Families with elementary-aged children often choose homes based on which school their children attend. Walkability, nearby friends, and the suburban, beachy feel make for an idyllic childhood setting.
WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE!
The Manhattan Beach Tree section was not named because of the large amount of trees in the area, but rather because of the street names — Laurel, Pine, Palm, Elm, Oak, etc. — although there is a strict tree preservation ordinance with penalties for cutting down a front or side yard tree.

Because the Tree Section is largely residential property, few businesses are established within its core. But Sepulveda runs along the Eastern border while the Southern side is Manhattan Beach Blvd. On Sepulveda - UCLA Medical Center, Exer Urgent Care, and Torrance Memorial Urgent Care bring exceptional health care without the hassle of a drive into LA proper. Law firms, banks, a vet, hotels, and Enterprise satisfy necessities.
Grunions, a legendary sports bar, and Manhattan House, famous for its multi-surface mural, offers homey pub-like environments for locals who don’t need a view. Plus Two Guns added another small shop on Manhattan Beach Blvd between Poinsettia and John. Now, Tree Section residents can walk to coffee on a slow Saturday and then mosey on over to their neighbors in...
THE HILL SECTION
Some of the grandest homes and most radiant yards of the city belong to the Hill Section. Sepulveda borders the neighbor-
hood to the East, Ardmore to the West, Manhattan Beach Blvd to the North, and the city of Hermosa Beach lines the South. The Hill Section sports a vast array of architecture from spare Mid-Century Modern holdovers to sprawling Spanish Colonial.
The Hill Section’s yards burst with color from indigenous flowers and native plants, many of which are planted by California Naturalist Mike Garcia (read more on Page 30). He prioritizes earth-friendly gardening in his landscape designs to conserve water and promote environmental harmony. “The greatest environmental challenge that Southern California faces is our lack of water,” Garcia says. “Native plants are perfectly suited for our dry climate - they require very little water, and they support local pollinators.”
WORTH A LOOK
The Hill Section obtained its name from the simple fact that it is on a hill. When you are situated on the West side of the hill, you will enjoy sweeping views of the ocean from Palos Verdes to Malibu and beyond. If you find yourself on the North or East side, you can often have incredible views of the glimmering lights of Downtown Los Angeles and even the Hollywood sign.

ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS FOR ENTREPRENEURS
Kirk Cole is the Founder of Simple Accounting Solutions, an accounting services firm based in Manhattan Beach that is tailored to serve entrepreneurs and their companies. While working in Public Accounting, Kirk saw a disconnected reality between entrepreneurs and their accounting firms. He felt that firms were more preoccupied with their own internal needs, which placed client needs second to their own. Firms would often ignore the cost-benefit analysis of providing various services for clients and undervalue the timely communication that entrepreneurs needed in order to make optimal decisions. Determined to strengthen the connection and transparency between entrepreneurs and their accounting firms, Kirk and his team focus on deeply understanding each client’s needs while providing best in class service. They take time to understand the holistic needs of the client and work to meet those needs in every possible way, such as by leveraging best in class software. The firm not only offers Accounting, Tax, and Assurance services but also personalized CFO services. They have a thriving team of professionals based in Southern California who provide timely and effective solutions for their clients and are led by a senior leadership group that has worked together for over a decade.

Sand Section could use more of.
This neighborhood, like the Tree Section, is mostly residential once you breach the borders of Manhattan Beach Blvd and Sepulveda. But Gelson’s revolutionized the Hill Section, bringing high-end grocery shopping within walking distance (incredibly valuable during the pandemic). Deep Roots Garden, acupuncturists, masseurs, and small, private gyms provide us with places to get into nature and ourselves, returning to the earth
and recentering our bodies. Barsha ups the bougieness of our sleepy beach town, with elegant wine tastings, exotic charcuterie boards, and a cozy hipster vibe.
THE SAND SECTION
While each neighborhood has something of value, The Sand Section is the marquee feature of Manhattan Beach. It’s home to the downtown district filled with chic boutiques and local restaurants, such as MB staples like the Manhattan Beach Creamery and The Strand House. It includes the Pier ending in the iconic Roundhouse Aquarium. With its unri-
valed ocean views, beachfront properties, and proximity to local boutiques and restaurants, the Sand Section stands alone in its access.
It’s also the oldest part of town, home to the original late 1800s settlement when the unincorporated village was known as PotenciaSpanish for “power.” Residential neighborhoods quickly filled the sandy slope approaching the ocean along the 2.1-mile oceanfront. Those homes are now arguably the most sought-after places to live in all 88 cities of LA County.
Even within the small framework of the Sand Section, there are also subsections with their own spirit. West of Highland vs. East of
it. Walk streets. The Strand. North Manhattan, or as locals call it - El Porto. The debate is so strong on that, and opinions abound. El Porto is what longtime residents know as a surfer’s paradise. The parameters are anything North of Rosecrans along Highland running down to the water. Realtors and business owners in the area have attempted a rebranding to

The Sand Section is peppered with both dining and retail businesses. The Sand Section’s nearness to alluring downtown and unrivaled views of our iconic Pier make it the special community it is. There’s nothing better than having the Roundhouse in your sights, which is why the Sand Section is so exclusive and inviting.

I still remember the beginning of the year in YEA when we had our first meeting to get a sense of the program. I was the youngest person there; some of the students were seniors in high school! I went home feeling nervous. I knew YEA was a commitment, and I was afraid that the other students would look down on me because I was younger. I’m so glad that I stuck with it because YEA was such a great experience. I grew friendships with the other students, and we helped each other learn. The class spent an entire year working to perfect our business plans and make presentations for investors. I got to see the progress of all the students around me, and we learned from each other. Everyone in the program was so nice to me; in fact, my favorite part of the program was spending time with them. By the end of the year, the seniors I was so afraid of were the people buying my Girl Scout cookies and cheering me on after my presentation. When we finally had to present our business plan in front of investors, I was a lot less nervous than I thought I would be because I knew I was prepared. My business was fully funded by investors; I actually got a bit more money than I asked for! YEA taught me how to make a business, but most importantly it taught me to not be intimidated by older students.

hobbies into businesses! I love photography, design, and little kids. I was able to create a business that involves all three: MB Sunshine Photography. I photograph kids’ birthday parties and then design photo books or digital videos capturing the event. For any student considering YEA, I would say it is a lot of work, but you should go for it! The YEA program is such a unique experience, and I never would have imagined how many different skills I would learn: business, accounting, presentations, public speaking, and so much more!
over, my writing skills improved as I was tasked with detailing precise and descriptive profiles of my business that were graspable to investors and instructors. This proved especially useful in my college application process in which I answered short answer questions with limited word counts but expanded literary proficiency. If I had to pick a favorite of my many memories from YEA, I’d say it was being paired with a mentor that’s currently involved in building their own start-up, something which made the project more immersive. If I had the chance to talk with the young man I was at the start of my time with YEA, I’d tell him to stay hungry, creative, and impressionable while trusting my instructors wholeheartedly as they have nothing but the best interest of me and my peers in mind. Thank you, YEA!

If asked how The Young Entrepreneurs Academy benefited my life, I’d start on a long list of factors that convey how the program is one of my favorite experiences. Starting with school, almost everything learned in the program has been applicable to my academic career, more specifically my math and English skills. Learning units, costs of production, and market predictions while constructing my company equipped me with accelerated calculation times and heightened critical thinking with numbers that I didn’t just get from a textbook. It also gave me great public speaking skills and confidence in presenting in front of a crowd. My favorite memory is all the mentor visits. ith the addition of the pandemic silver lining dining decks, Manhattan Beach is now even more of a bustling beach city culinary scene. Gorgeous, tiered outdoor decks at The Strand House and Rock’N Fish offer incredible ocean views. Patios at Nando and Fishing with Dynamite are little secret gardens all over the city. Ercoles and Shellback Tavern, two infamous Manhattan Beach bars, have casual and very on-brand outdoor spaces that keep the party going. No one knows how long these patios will stay. But for now, we’re here for it.
Downtown Manhattan Beach isn’t the only area with a new facelift. As mentioned in my Neighborhoods + Businesses article on Page 40, the Manhattan Village Shopping Center is a new and improved version of its former self. Their dining scene is more varied and divine than ever. Joey Restaurant and Boa Steakhouse elevate the area, adding to the local secret Tin Roof Bistro. For something healthy, Sweet Greens and Urban Plates are exceptional quick options. And to satisfy your sweet tooth post-meal, make sure to visit the famous Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee. Plus - free parking. Say no more.

GOING LOCAL
Manhattan Beach residents can now “Go Nuts!” at their own outpost of family-owned Southland chain Health Nut, known for its fresh ingredients, homemade dressings, and wide range of vegan, vegetarian, organic, and gluten-free salads, sandwiches, teas and more. Loyal clientele, including the Kardashian family, have long made the original Woodland Hills location a Valley destination. A Sherman Oaks location was added in 2019. Now, residents of the South Bay can enjoy Health Nut’s flavorful, high-quality menu without the drive! Says owner Steve Choi, son of founders Mike and Shirley Choi, “Our produce is delivered fresh daily, every morning. We tear our lettuce by hand and our chicken is cooked with no oil, butter or fat. Everything is made from family recipes!” In May of this year, the company announced that Kris Jenner had come on board as the company’s first investor. The downtown Manhattan Beach location, the company’s third, is at 332 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Additional openings are planned for Santa Monica (late 2022) and Culver City (2023). Says Choi, “We were drawn to the tight-knit feeling of community here. This is an area with a lot of active people who are interested in wellness, but still want delicious, flavorful options. We are excited to serve them!” Stop in to the Manhattan Beach location to enjoy one of their large selection of generously portioned salads, including the Noodlerama, High Protein, Cobb or Chinese Chicken salad; a freshly made Tuna Avocado sandwich; or the world-famous Mango Greentini! The restaurant’s famous salad dressings are also available to purchase, in store or online. Open Monday-Saturday.

Cafe - moved into East Manhattan and heightened the healthy dining experience. Everything in the cafe is gluten- and dairy-free, an excellent allergen-friendly health food restaurant with plenty of sweet indulgences. Healthnut moved into Jamba’s Juice’s old space next to the classic Noah’s Bagels; it’s another nutritious addition with salads, sandwiches, and more. Esperanza, a sister restaurant of Hermosa’s swanky Palmilla, spiced up the other side of the street. The old Shark’s Cove is now a futuristic fine-dining Mexican experience. The margaritas and guacamole trio will change your life. The celebrated Nando Trattoria moved in just a street over and boasts incredibly well-made Italian food.
Slay’s Italian Kitchen is also changing the Italian food game, just as David Slay’s original Steak + Fish House enhanced MB’s classic culinary scene. A visit to either of his unique restaurants makes for the perfect night out. Nick’s, MB Post, and Petros all add to the growing eclectic and highbrow culinary field.
Manhattan Beach has always been a mix of fancy and casual; our local everyday staples reign supreme as some of the city’s most successful and adored establishments.
Uncle Bill’s Pancake House perpetually has a line wrapped around the building. Ercoles and Shellback have held memories and secrets for decades. Simmzy’s, Sloopy’s, Local Yolk, The Kettle, OB’s, and Grunions are all local favorites with unique personalities. With so many varied options, there’s something for everyone at every meal of the day. THE STRAND HOUSE HAS A NEW CHEF AT THE HELM, AND HE’S BRINGING BIG FLAVOR
Chef Craig is a man used to creative fine dining, and he’s been having a blast revamping Manhattan Beach’s favorite restaurant. Originally from Australia, Chef Craig has worked in kitchens worldwide. He made the rounds through Australia, working under talented chefs in Queensland, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney. Chef then worked at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris and New York and as head chef at the world-renowned Le Cirque in NYC. Six years ago, he moved to Los Angeles to get in on the blossoming culinary scene. “The LA food scene has progressed through the years; right now, it’s really vibrant. People are doing some of the best cooking in America here in LA.” After years at Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach, Chef Craig is now heading the fine dining room of The Strand House. And he’s bringing his international, exploratory years in the industry to our small beach town. “Of course, there’s no better view in Manhattan Beach,” he says, “but I focused on doing great food - challenging, creative, but also recognizable. I brought in ingredients that people don’t always see. Pretty sure we’re the only restaurant in Manhattan Beach using black truffles all season long. Or my chestnut tagliatelle with a mushroom ragu and toasted Brussels sprout leaves - I don’t think you’ll find something like that in Manhattan Beach.” Chef Craig keeps the menu seasonal, often sourcing from local farmers’ markets. The menu changes often, with some familiar staples standing vigil among new and intriguing concoctions. “I’m not content to be okay. I want my food to be great.” And that is just great with all of us, too, Chef Craig.
