AVERAGE TEMPERATURES

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES Mild climate year-round

Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country enjoys welcoming weather yearround, often characterized as a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers, and cool winters with relatively low rainfall. The valley’s general weather pattern is one of morning mist, warm midday sun, cooling afternoon ocean breezes and cooler nights. This tempo of nature lends a pleasing, natural rhythm to any schedule for the day. The dynamics of onshore-flow bring cool, gentle winds from the coast to Temecula Valley almost daily. The same dynamics also pull cool, moist, ocean air into the valley, most often in summer. These conditions combined tend to help keep summer daytime temperatures lower and air quality better than that of surrounding Southern California areas.

OLD TOWN

The Old Town Temecula Community Theater, one of Old Town’s cultural gems, features a 354-seat theater and a 48-seat Club at The Merc, where every seat is the best seat in the house. Performances include local talent as well as artists from around the world.

Two beautiful art pieces in Old Town pay tribute to Temecula’s rich history. One is the centerpiece of the neighborhood, a Luiseño basketinspired fountain. Water flows from granite walls into the mosaic-tile fountain bowl that resembles the exceptional weave and textural design of Luiseño grass-woven baskets. The other is “The Emigrant Trail” mosaic 14 I V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

mural that adorns the outside wall of the Civic Center. This beautiful rendering depicts the early trails across California that made their way through Temecula. Old Town is home to two beloved museums. The Temecula Valley Museum strives to accurately portray the stories of Temecula Valley’s past and present through dynamic, fun,

and exciting exhibits. Pennypickle’s Workshop, Temecula Children’s Museum, is conceived as the home of Professor Pennypickle, 7,500 square feet of hands-on inventions, gadgets, and experiments for kids of all ages to discover, interact with and learn. Special events in Old Town occur year-round, celebrating the arts, our heritage, and the seasons. A calendar of events can be found at VisitTemeculaValley.com.

Why is it called Old Town Temecula? Because it’s just that! With its backdrop of enduring hillsides that bloom with lilac in spring, vibrant Old Town Temecula is the historical heart of Temecula Valley. It all began with the Pechanga band of Luiseño Native American Indians as they ran their hands through the soil, met under the Great Oak and stood atop the rolling hills overlooking the valley, naming it Temecula, “sunshine through the mist.” Gateway Arches at the northern and southern entrances to this downtown district commemorate our past. In 1859, in the era of the Butterfield Stage, the first U.S. post office was established here, marking Temecula’s permanence and importance. Thus, the year 1859 is boldly emblazoned on each arch. Two decades later, in 1882, the Temecula town site was established with arrival of the railroad, with a station in Old Town midway between

Riverside and San Diego. Then, in the early 1900s, new roads reached the valley and helped to open up Temecula to the outside world. The Inland Highway (the first, paved, two-lane, county road and ancestor of Highway 395) was built through Temecula Valley

in 1915. Until 1949, it ran down Old Town Front Street where restaurants, gas stations, and motels served those travelling through the Temecula Valley. Meanwhile, from the 1800s until the 1960s, farmers and ranchers blanketed the valley with cattle and crops. Photo courtesy of Temecula Valley Museum

Enjoy the vintage, industrial feel of 1909 Gastropub 28656 Front St. | Temecula, CA 92590 | www.1909temecula.com | 951-619-1909 Whether you are in Temecula for a vacation, visiting friends, or work, look no further than 1909, a unique restaurant and gastropub located in the heart of Old Town Temecula. As you drive through Old Town, one of the things that draws you to this restaurant is the large patio seating area that is always filled with people and tons of laughter and good times. After reading and hearing about all of the amazing reviews 1909 has from locals and out-of-towners, this restaurant is one to experience for yourself! 1909 is a tribute to the Machado building, the location where the restaurant and bar now lives. Well before the 1909 burger was created, this structure has been home to a trading post, livery, auto shop and most notably a bar. During the 70’s, the Longbranch Saloon was known as the roughest place in town to get a drink. Locals often stop in and tell stories of brawls and shootings. In fact, several bullet holes are still in the ceiling. It is no wonder that 1909 continues to draw the crowds.

After debating on what to order from the menu, the top choices seemed to be the 1909 burger and bison burger. Both are top sellers and what they are known for. I chose the bison burger this time and I would drive from anywhere to eat that delicious treat again! While dining at 1909, don’t forget to try their large selection of craft beer, local wine and especially handcrafted cocktails. You can order off of their menu or give them a little direction and let the bartenders and mixologists create a unique one-of-akind drink that will wow your palette. The Cedar Smoked Old Fashioned seemed to be a crowd favorite and gives a great show while they make it. Adding to the many offerings that 1909 has is their brunch menu that is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, complete with bottomless mimosas made with fresh squeezed orange juice and a bloody mary cart that comes to your table. It doesn’t get better than that! For those who want to try something more unique, order the Carnivore bloody mary complete with chicken wings, bacon and a meat straw. Yes, a meat straw. Even the kid’s menu is a unique experience. The menu has vintage motorcycles to color and meals from kobe corn dogs to grilled chicken. And if you happen to have your four-legged children with you, even they can order from the dog menu and enjoy it on the front patio. 1909 is easy to find as well. It is at the major intersection of Front & Main, just down the street from the City Hall. Te m e c u l a Va l l e y V i s i t o r s G u i d e I 17

In 1905, cattle baron Walter Vail began buying vast acreage surrounding the town of Temecula. By 1947, the Vail Ranch included more than 87,500 acres. In 1964, the Vails announced the sale of their ranch to a consortium of developers that had plans for a semi-urban, pastoral, master-planned community to be known as Rancho California. When the City of Temecula was incorporated in 1989, residents voted to retain the name of the original Native American village and eventual railroad town site. Then, just six miles over the hills, a curious farmer planted vines and discovered the climate and soil was ideal for growing grapes.

WINE COUNTRY

WINE COUNTRY Temecula Valley is home to a community of winemakers, winery owners, farmers, chefs, retailers, tasting room staff and entrepreneurs who are inspired by the beauty and promise of the region. Every day, from grape to glass, they bring excitement, dedication, creativity and joy to their work, and readily share this with visitors. A wine is more than just what’s in your glass. Get to know the people, the place and the story behind it for a truly memorable experience.

The Temecula Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) is Southern California’s largest wine producing region by volume. Just 22 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Temecula Valley is bordered by inland valleys and coastal mountains ranging from 2,000 to 11,000 feet in elevation, creating a low-pressure area characterized by warm days and cool nights. This 26 I V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

Mediterranean-like climate, similar to Napa Valley’s, allows our grapes to develop slowly to perfection, ensuring not just ripeness but also complexity, aromatics and acidity. This balance is key when it comes to wine. Temecula Valley winegrowers cultivate over two dozen grape varietals, produced in equally numerous styles. Some wineries focus on classic grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, while some specialize

in Italian varietals like Sangiovese, Vermentino and Montepulciano. Others produce wines from Rhône varietals like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier, and still others pride themselves on making exceptional wines from little-known grapes like Aglianico and Arneis, or on their unique and delicious proprietary blends. No matter your preference, you are sure to find something to please your palate.

Mount Palomar Winery has built on and improved John’s vision by pioneering wines and wine making techniques in Temecula, planting the first Mediterranean varieties, including the first Sangiovese. This tradition of innovation is being carried on in the newly opened Annata Bistro and Bar, as well as in future expansions, including a resort and spa. Past and present owners and the dedicated staff believe that wines should reflect a sense of harmony, presenting the taster with an array of sensations that are pleasing, yet complex. This is reflected in every one of our wines, including our Solera Cream Sherry, produced in the last outdoor Solera in California. You’ll find this dedication to quality not just in our wines, but in all of our services, as a winery, a restaurant, and the perfect backdrop for weddings and private events. Mount Palomar Winery encompasses romance and beauty, with views of surrounding mountains, picturesque sunsets, and walkways lined with tall Italian Cyprus trees. The winery sits on 315 rolling acres,

with 55 acres of vineyards, boasting 22 varietals. The décor and the exceptional service all come together to capture the essence of an enchanting day or evening. We host everything from birthday dinners to corporate events, up to 1000 guests. Our outdoor venues are filled with statues, flowers, and green grass, and are perfect for wedding receptions, concerts, 5k runs, and parties of all kind. For indoor events, you can enjoy the rustic charm of our barrel room, and host an evening surrounded by barrels of fine wine, aging until their time to shine. Make reservations at Annata Bistro and Bar and you can enjoy world class cuisine, surrounded by floor to ceiling windows overlooking the valley. We believe a wedding venue should be just as special as the event itself, and be a beautiful reminder of the day you said “I DO” every time you come back for a visit. Our 5 star support staff will guide you easily through the process, starting with a personal tour and staying with you all the way through to the last dance. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed wine tasting experience, the perfect wedding venue, a friendly get-together, or the best birthday party you’ve ever thrown, come to Mount Palomar Winery for an unforgettable experience! Wine Tasting 101: In Temecula, we all agree that visiting wineries should be fun, educational and, most importantly, memorable. Here are some helpful tips to get the most from your wine-tasting experience. Bring supplies: Before heading out, pack a cooler with water and snacks to keep you going during the day. It’s also the perfect place to stash the bottles you purchase so they don’t overheat! Taste like a pro: First visit to a winery? Remember the “Five S’s of wine tasting” and no one will ever know:

MotoDoffo Vintage Motorcycle Collection

Unique Venues & Private Events

1) Sight Examine the clarity and color; it can tell you about the age, type and body of the wine. 2) Swirl Gently roll the wine around in your glass to bring out the aromas. 3) Sniff Get your nose into the glass, breathe in and explore the different aromas. 4) Sip Let the wine pass over all areas of your palate. Is it fruity? Sweet? Bitter? Fresh? 5) Savor A great wine leaves a lasting impression. Engage: Tasting rooms are the perfect place to be adventurous and ask questions! Don’t know what to sip? Describe the wines you typically enjoy and your server will be happy to offer information and suggestions to help guide your experience. Try something you’ve never heard of before and go home with a new favorite. Pace Yourself: Don’t try to visit too many wineries in one day. You and your palate will be overwhelmed. Relax, explore and have fun!

ARTS & ENTERAINMENT

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Don’t miss Temecula Valley’s beautiful public art. Several pieces are located in Old Town Temecula: a Luiseño basket-inspired fountain, “The Emigrant Trail” mosaic art, “History of Temecula” mural, and the Old Town arches. A life-size Ronald Reagan statue can be found at the Ronald Reagan Sports Park. A Japanese garden, “Singing in the Rain” sculpture, and “Letters Home” memorial are at the Duck Pond, located just east of I-15 on Rancho California Road.

ARTS & CULTURE If you’re interested in fully immersing yourself in the wine country experience, consider taking on of the many classes offered at several of the wineries, including cooking, painting, and Wine 101. You can also make reservations for a behind-the-scenes wine tour, which is available at most wineries. Museums, galleries, public art, special events, and entertainment fill Old Town Temecula with culture. Stop by Pechanga Resort & Casino to see beautiful sculptures and ancient artifacts on display. While visiting, notice the paintings in the halls and walkways from acclaimed artists. ENTERTAINMENT A variety of entertainment can be found in Old Town Temecula. The Old Town Community Theater and The Merc

performances include local talent as well as artists from around the world. Nightlife can be found at Temecula Stampede, as well as many of the restaurants, tasting rooms and night clubs.

ABOUT THE COURSES CrossCreek Golf Club was designed by legendary Arthur Hills, and is one of Temecula’s most beautiful places to play. Journey at Pechanga was also designed by Arthur Hills. “The grandeur of panoramic vistas, rock outcroppings, stately old oak trees and the mountain edging became a tapestry on which to weave the strategic aspects of the game to evoke the spirit of competition,” he said of designing this stunning course. The Legends Golf Club’s picturesque grounds and superb Legend Grill are in the heart of Temecula. Beautiful Pala Mesa Resort offers a tranquil getaway with rolling fairways, exceptional cuisine, and personalized services. The awe of surrounding mountains is the backdrop to the Redhawk Golf Course and Resort. Golfers can enjoy the lush landscape while hitting the green in an unforgettable setting. The breathtaking views and peacefulness you will experience, either on the fairway, by the fireplace in the fabulous Cork|Fire Kitchen, or in the luxurious rooms, will have you never wanting to leave.

CrossCreek Golf Club 43860 Glen Meadows Road | Temecula, CA 92590 | 951-506-3402 | www.crosscreekgolfclub.com The stunning beauty of the Temecula Valley and the legendary design work of Arthur Hills have come together at CrossCreek Golf Club. The result is a pristine Southern California course where great golf is played in a secluded natural environment. Groves of age-old oak and sycamore trees and rippling creeks provide intriguing scenery, which meshes with Hills’ challenging layout to create a haven for exceptional golf. The natural hazards demand careful shot-making. The course features firm, hard to hold fairways, rough-edged bunkers that are difficult to escape, and firm, fast greens that slope away for tricky putts. The par 71 layout runs 6,853 from the championship tees, combining length with the array of natural hazards. There are three shorter tee positions that make the course accessible to all levels of player. CrossCreek is open for daily play at affordable rates and offers attractive membership packages for singles and families.
