receivers are true-diversity receivers, which means that they use two independent antennas. That way, if the wireless signal doesn’t reach one antenna, it can still reach the other. Quality wireless receivers have antennas that twist off, allowing you to mount them on stands and spread them out. Separating your antennas vastly increases their effectiveness. Also, if you have a multichannel wireless system, adding an antenna distribution system will allow you to connect only a single pair of antennas to multiple receivers.

Whether your future wireless system is a single-channel, single-speaker setup or a larger system for the whole worship team, it should effectively and accurately spread the message. If the number of quality wireless systems you need is beyond your current budget, practice wise stewardship and save your money until you can afford the system that your house of worship deserves. There are excellent single-channel wireless systems that you can start with and expand later. Your Sweetwater Sales Engineer will be happy to help you find the right system for your church.

EQUIPPINGTHECHURCH IS OUR WORSHIP MEDIA RELEVANT? I was talking to one of our customers yesterday and he mentioned that his traveling music team often visits churches that are still rocking the old school overhead transparency projectors! This may sound funny, but I kind of miss those days. Back then the most technical thing to know was that to move the lyrics up you had to pull the page down. And if the bulb burned out you could make a quick trip to Radio Shack for a replacement at a cost of under $10. But then I got to thinking about how the use of old technology can potentially create a disconnect with a younger demographic. So my question is this. Is what we project in our church services accurately representing our church culture? I’m not saying that in order to be relevant you have to have the most cutting edge technology. In fact, implementing technology for the mere sake of having cool technology will more often backfire than be helpful. I had a friend once describe church

SHORT-CUTCAPO EXPLORING NEW SOUNDS WITH THE SHORT-CUT CAPO Over the years, I’ve heard so many encouraging stories from many of you regarding playing the guitar using the cut capo. It’s really exciting to find out that it’s been a key part of someone learning to play guitar. For instance, last summer, I finally had the chance to meet Jon Guerra of Vertical Church Band. Jon’s music has been a blessing to me in my ministry for several years now. To hear him tell me that the Short-Cut capo was integral to his learning guitar is humbling. It’s amazing how the Lord works! I’ve been writing about this capo for many years now. I’m sure there are new players out there that have yet to try it out…just like Jon. Over the years, I’ve covered the general use of the cut capo… placing it on the 2nd fret and playing songs in the key of “E” or “A” then using a 6-string capo to move the cut capo up the fretboard and play in different keys. As a worship leader, this is how I find the Short-Cut

NOWHEARTHIS New Releases PHIL WICKHAM Children of God There are great musicians and performers in the world of CCM Worship music, and then there are those who are artists. Phil Wickham definitely fits into the latter category. Wickham’s songwriting style and poetic flavor are well known around the world and his breathy yet intense vocal style makes him stand out from the crowd. His sixth studio release, Children Of God, features 12 new songs of inspiring worship with an electronic artistic flavor that is sure to appeal to a younger generation of worshippers. The theme of the album centers on our need for God’s love and His heart for us as His adopted sons and daughters. Most of the arrangements of this new album sit within the dance/electronica/pop genre that is becoming more and more popular with younger Christians. Phil’s version of the “Doxology” is uplifting and energetic and features some new lyrics

When I say that, I do not mean that the writing was sloppy or that the guitars were flat or the drums off beat or that the mixing was sub-par, no. These songs are raw, rootsy, and real, and this reviewer could easily see his worship team playing and leading the congregation with any of these songs on a Sunday morning. “Love Changes Everything” kicks off the album with a mid-tempo song of victory about the death and resurrection of Christ complete with grooving bass lines and powerful background vocals. Lyrically, we are reminded that what Christ did at the resurrection was the most important event in history and that He really did change everything. FRONTOFHOUSE GO OR NO: UNDERSTANDING THE CHAPTERS OF LIFE On stage, worship team members tend to ebb and flow in a regular cadence. The current guitarist may have only been a part of the church for a few months, and this may be the drummer’s first Sunday. Techs, on the other hand, usually stay in the same position and location for years. The nature of AVL tasks, with their inherent stability and repetition, fit the psyche of most techs well. However, the time for change does eventually reach the tech booth and, whether it is due to circumstance or evolution, how you handle it will create a positive or negative legacy between you and the church. Here is how to know: “Should I stay or should I go? ARE YOU QUITTING OR EXPANDING? The acoustic preamp everyone is talking about. Studio Quality, Stage Friendly, 2 Channel Instrument & Mic Preamp / EQ / DI / Blender

“Man, FELiX sounds great! And it really helps because it eliminates another piece of gear for me. Now, I have everything I need in a single unit: the mic preamp for my acoustic bass, great EQ, and flexible I/O. It works great for my electric bass too. Home-run! Killer!” — John Patitucci, Solo Artist, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter “I’ve been loving the FELiX. I feel that the pure tone of my banjo is now coming through, and that nothing is degrading the sound along the way. I would highly recommend it to those that can hear the difference!” — Béla Fleck, Grammy Winning Instrumentalist and Composer

“After trying what seemed like every preamp on the market, I’ve happily settled on the Felix for upright bass. Sounds amazing, is very flexible and works better than anything I’ve tried...This thing is genius!” — Mark Robertson, The Legendary Shack Shakers “Congrats on making a great box. I’ve been hoping for something of this caliber for years and years. It renders my pedal board of the last several years obsolete and useless. It’s easy to use and sounds like I’d hoped. Bottom line - this is the best preamp I’ve ever used.” — Bryan Sutton, Six Time Winner of the IBMA’s Guitarist of the Year

DRUMMER’S PERSPECTIVE continued from page 10

For instance, the bass line from “Trading My Sorrows” is a great hook to copy. It really could be anything you hear within a song that inspires you to try to emulate it on the kit. Be aware of the low to high phrasing of the notes, and then try to make the drums copy the tonal range of the melody. Obviously you may not be able to do the melody note for note. But what you are trying to do is imitate the movement from high to low tones of your drum kit. This is a situation where I really enjoy playing a large drum kit in order to do this. But even on a scaled down “Ringo” kit (4 pieces, hi-hat, ride + 2 crashes) you should be able to respond melodically to whatever you hear. If you’d like to hear some drum ideas like this check out Paul Baloche’s “Our God Saves” project. On the songs “The Kingdom of God” and “Your Love Came Down” play close attention to melodic lines being sung and played on other instruments and how I reacted to them on the drums. These methods of creating new fills can be
