LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, Five years ago, Mount Saint Vincent celebrated its centennial as a College. While we reflect upon and affirm the College’s mission annually, the centennial was special. We celebrated vibrantly our most important commitments—our values as a Sisters of Charity college. In the following pages, you will find a report detailing how the Mount has distinguished itself over the past five years. The opportunities available to students are evolving through an expanded and enriched curriculum, campus improvements, and new efforts to leverage our identity as a Sisters of Charity institution. The College’s work is inspiring; the future is very bright. Innovations are wide-ranging; some are unique. All share two common motivations. First, to cultivate that love of excellence and aversion to mediocrity that define exceptional education. Second, to help students discover themselves and their talents in their service to the common good. Alumnae/i, friends, and benefactors like you are vital to this work. Your generosity maintains the exceptional quality of our programs and the College’s unwavering commitment to educational access, while simultaneously providing the foundation for growth and stability. The support you provide the College is invaluable to current students and to those to come. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Charles L. Flynn, Jr.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Mount was featured as a top master’s degree-granting institution in 2011, and was recognized in The Other College Guide’s 2015 “Best Bang for the Buck” category based on net price, both developed by Washington Monthly. Washington Monthly also ranked the College #26 for social mobility among the best 255 liberal arts colleges in the U.S. In 2011, U.S. News & World Report lauded the Mount for having among the best loan repayment rates in the country for Pell grant reciepients, which is a key indicator of the College's postgraduation employment success. The Mount has had one of the top rates of alumni giving in the region. In 2012, Giving USA reported an increase of 3.5% in charitable giving nationally, but at the Mount the increase in alumnae/i giving was nearly twice that. In 2013, Mount alumnae/i giving held steady, while falling 9.2% nationally. In 2014, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities identified the Mount as a regional leader for STEM-educated college graduates in a report on New York independent colleges. The Mount was named a 2014-2015 College of Distinction—ranked as one of the nation’s best places to learn, grow, and succeed. In 2015, the Mount was recognized as one of Money magazine’s Best Colleges and was one of 10 New York State institutions to receive a top ranking for delivering the most value for students. In 2016, the College was featured for a second year in a row. In 2016, the Mount was the only private, religious institution in the country to be recognized in a study by the U.S. Department of Education for its mission-centered record of socioeconomic inclusivity and its demonstrated record of extraordinary student success. The Mount will be recognized in the Regional Universities North category of the 2017 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, and will be included in The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings for 2017.

Fayne McGrath Daniels ’52 and C. Ross Daniels

The ETC College Rankings Index has rated the Mount in the top tier of U.S. colleges for improving student/alumni earning and employability.

CURRICULAR INNOVATION A Mount Saint Vincent education equips students to master their full potential as creative, disciplined thinkers and problem solvers. In the past five years, the College has enriched current academic offerings, and has added new interdisciplinary programs that are coherent to institutional strengths, mission appropriate, and meet market need. In 2012, the Undergraduate College revised its Core Curriculum to ensure all students shared a vigorous intellectual experience that serves as the basis for lifelong learning. The 49 credit program takes place over four years, reflecting the College’s commitment to an authentic liberal arts education. Students complete classes in a range of disciplines— literature, languages, art, music, history, philosophy, religion, mathematics, as well as the natural and social sciences—to

develop a solid foundation of knowledge, an appreciation of moral and ethical values, and essential skills such as critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, and effective communication. According to Sarah Stevenson, Provost and Dean of Faculty, “the increased attention to critical thinking, in particular, and to active inquiry over passive reception, will prepare our students well as they embark on careers or graduate school.” In 2015, two new majors were added in Public Policy and Market Data Analytics. These interdisciplinary programs draw on existing strengths and utilize faculty from the humanities, business, economics, communication, and mathematics. The College has also enhanced instruction of introductory and core courses. The

College secured funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program in 2016 to provide recitation hours for key science and mathematics courses. These hours engage students more fully with subject matter, and facilitate the development of effective peer-to-peer and student to faculty relationships, all of which provide a foundation for success. Similarly, core English courses have been enhanced by a writing laboratory to cultivate the writing and research skills essential to success in all disciplines. The Center for Undergraduate Research continues to grow as a key element of the baccalaureate experience. The Center sponsors and assists students in developing original research and

scholarship across the College. In May 2016, more than 90 students presented original scholarly work at the annual Student Research and Service Symposium. Students learn qualitative and scientific methods along the entire spectrum, from conception to measurement to analysis. Research studies are conducted by students in every academic discipline. Topics are shaped by both course work and the range of service, co-curricular, and study aboard opportunities available at the College, so they truly reflect each student’s passions and strengths. Cultivating individual interests is also key to the Oxley Career Education Program. A nationally recognized initiative—made possible in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education—helps students understand the value and range of opportunities aligned with their abilities.

With the support of dedicated advisors, students strategize how to translate their passions into a meaningful career. One important facet of the Oxley Program, which was launched in 2013, allows students to engage in credit granting internships throughout their time at the College. Students benefit from exploring various professional and academic interests. At other institutions, internships are completed as a culminating experience before graduation. Opportunities have also been developed to draw on the College’s location. The summer of 2016 marked the first offering of the College’s ART|NYC initiative. Through ART|NYC, students from across the nation can experience the visual arts—from museum masterpieces to the latest gallery exhibitions—in a global cultural capital. A four-course, full-semester program featuring an internship and emphasizing

direct experience, ART|NYC provides trips to area museums and galleries, studio visits, and conversations with visual arts professionals. “A great deal of learning depends on viewing reproductions, whether of a celebrated masterpiece from the past or the latest, game-changing work of public art,” said Marcia Vetrocq, Director of ART|NYC. This past year, Katherine Wallace, currently a junior at Kansas State University, participated in the program. “I had never been to New York City before, let alone spent more than a few hours with famous or well-known works of art,” Katherine said. “The program was a total immersion of study and discussion, of being drawn into pieces of art history and city life.” Katherine credits ART|NYC for further propelling her passion for art into a strong career path. continued on page 38

SolarCity representative Henry Labalme, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Senator Jeffrey Klein, and President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. celebrate the largest solar array in NYC at Mount Saint Vincent.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS The summer of 2016 also brought the installation of 1,400 solar panels in Villa Lot—making it the largest known solar array in New York City. The project is coordinated in partnership with the nation’s top solar provider SolarCity. The College expects to cut its overall electrical costs by over $100,000 per year through the use of solar panels. Additional panels will top the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center, and plans are underway for further installations across multiple buildings on campus. The solar canopies are yet another example of the College’s commitment to taking an environmentally conscious approach. Most of the College’s major buildings—including Founders Hall, Hayes Auditorium, Spellman Hall, and the Science Hall—have completed oil-to-gas conversions. The College is now at an over 10 percent energy cost savings per year. On top of recently switching the College’s residence halls to LED light fixtures, the Mount also boasts outdoor LED lighting. The life span of an LED bulb is 50,000 hours compared to 1,200 hours on an incandescent bulb. The College is also in the process of steadily revamping its building management system, to manage costs and eliminate energy waste.

MISSION INSPIRED VISION

At the Mount, students engage in service to pursue knowledge, develop an understanding and appreciation for individuals from diverse backgrounds, and prepare themselves to address the challenges facing our communities. The College inspires students and alumnae/i to be Leaders in Service— individuals who respect the dignity of every person, freely share the benefits of their experiences and education, and who understand that true charity is an act of love and respect between equals. Opportunities to serve abound and can be found through an integrated and broad range of initiatives across the campus and throughout the curriculum. The Seton Service and Leadership Program exemplifies the College’s most fundamental values. The program, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of New York, includes a four-year, full room and board scholarship offered to students with high academic profiles and outstanding community service and leadership skills. But the Seton Service and Leadership Program is more than a scholarship. All Mount students are encouraged and invited to join the like-minded community of peers who serve together, fostering servant leadership skills in the spirit of Elizabeth Ann Seton and Vincent de Paul. As diverse as their interests are, students find commonality in service and volunteer over 10,000 hours annually. Service is not just an extracurricular activity—it is an essential component of the College’s mission, and the charism of its founders, the Sisters of Charity. And it’s not limited to our campus community. Students respond to the immediate needs of the disenfranchised and most vulnerable— the disabled, elderly, homeless, working poor, and youth—while pursuing advocacy and policy work to address the cause of inequities, both locally and globally. A few years ago, the College made a powerful decision to further its service opportunities abroad, empowering student success by expanding its international educational offerings. Nearly every college student has an opportunity to study abroad, but Mount Saint Vincent

students have an advantage: they can imbue their study abroad experiences with meaningful work. The Mount welcomed IPSL to campus in 2013. Since 1981, IPSL has engaged students, educators, and grassroots organizations around the world in hands-on service to promote equitable relationships, social justice, sustainable change, and a commitment to our shared humanity. With congruent missions and a focus on excellence, inclusion, and ethical service, the College was the logical choice as the East Coast headquarters for the group’s programmatic operations. Over the past few years, the strategic partnership has matured. Undergraduate students have expanded their academic studies through IPSL’s programs, seeking valuable work skills and intercultural competency. Service learning is the pedagogy that links academic study with the hands-on experience of volunteer community service, which IPSL and Mount Saint Vincent have enriched through each other. The partnership is complementary. Now known as IPSL @ Mount Saint Vincent, its nationally recognized academics and renowned global service learning placements have created greater access to high-quality international educational programming. Both the College and IPSL have championed their commitment to the greater good. And both now lead the way for ethical service learning abroad. Much of the College’s rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum—on campus and abroad—includes the study of key issues, including those relating to social and public policy. The Fishlinger Center for Public Policy Research enhances such studies, preparing students to engage in intelligent discussion and debate as informed citizens and future policymakers. The on-campus center is a vital hub of fact-finding inquiry, which works to spotlight public opinion on key policy issues through independent, objective data gathering and analysis. Since its inception in 2015, the Fishlinger Center has produced

significant research on social issues— ranging from the epidemic of human trafficking to comprehensive analysis of the 2016 presidential election. In the months ahead, the Fishlinger Center will continue its mission to galvanize thought leaders and the general public with nuanced examination of the most salient issues of the day. In 2016, the Charter High School for Law and Social Justice—the product of a unique partnership between the College of Mount Saint Vincent and New York Law School—welcomed its second freshman class. Located at 1960 University Boulevard in the Bronx, the Charter School weaves the intricacies of law into its four-year curriculum, aiming to provide students with a comprehensive high school education while implementing academic and social groundwork for success in college and post-college life. Underscored by the themes of law and social justice, the Charter School’s mission is to engage, inspire, and empower students. The Mount’s Teacher Residency Program will utilize the Charter School as a training site for students seeking a Master of Science in Adolescent Education and Special Education Grades 7-12. This hands-on experience brings together theory and practice, better preparing graduate students to enter the classroom as a professional. The Mount’s mission, and how it is lived by students, alumnae/i, faculty, and staff, made it the ideal home for the Margaret F. Grace Lecture. Dedicated to the exploration of ecumenism, world poverty, and social justice, the lecture series was established in 2001 by the late Margaret F. Grace, a Catholic lay leader and philanthropist who founded the Cardinal Suenens Center at John Carroll University. In 2015, the Grace family relocated the lecture series to the Mount. Margaret and her husband Peter Grace were longstanding benefactors of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Their son, Patrick Grace, a trustee emeritus, continues the tradition of generosity and service, which is now further augmented through the honor of hosting the annual Grace Lecture.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS The last several years have brought additional improvements to our athletic and recreational facilities. In 2011, a new wrestling training room/dance suite was constructed. In 2014, the campus’ first NCAA regulation athletic field was completed. Situated on the banks of the Hudson River, Marillac field offers breathtaking views of Manhattan and the Palisades, providing an unrivaled setting for competition. The field serves as the home of the Dolphins’ soccer and lacrosse teams. In 2015, the College expanded and renovated the fitness center in the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center—the facility is now comprised of 7,500 square feet and benefits from up-to-date fitness equipment.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS As the College’s enrollment continues to grow, renovations are being made to Founders Hall. These changes are necessary to ensure the building adequately serves the student population, but are designed to preserve the beauty and history of the landmark. In the past five years, new lounge, study, and office spaces have been created throughout the building.

The College received $278,539 in 2015-2016 to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students. The George I. Alden Trust of Worchester, MA made a grant of $150,000 in September 2015. The grant contributed to the modernization of the College’s microbiology laboratory suite. The James G. The Louis and Rachel Rudin Foundation continued its generous support of the College with an award of $30,000 for nursing student scholarships. The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust awarded the College $14,170 in scholarship funding for nursing students. The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities made a new award of $15,000 for nursing scholarships. The grant was made in memory of Yvonne Raskob. The Elizabeth Seton Library was awarded $5,302 from the New York State Department of Education’s Coordinated Collection Development Aid Program to support academic collection acquisition.

CONTINUING SUPPORT In October 2015, the College began the second year of a fiveyear Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Grant totaling up to $2.3 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant assists institutions serving a high proportion of Hispanic students with developing and increasing their academic offerings. Second year funding exceeded $500,000 and bolstered the College’s Academic Resource Center, Mount Access Program, and Oxley Career Education Program. The 2015-2016 fiscal year was the second year of the College’s a five-year award to operate a New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The program is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate promising students who will succeed at the college level and beyond. The grant will provide more than $3 million in support during the five-year period. In September 2015, James Fabrizio, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, began the second year of a three-year research project funded by a National Institutes of Health Academic Research Enhancement Award. The grant, totaling $195,000, will enable Dr. Fabrizio and student researchers to further studies of latestage maturation of spermatozoa in fruit flies.

2015-2016 was the third year of a National Institutes of Health Biomedical Research and Research Training Grant project led by Janet Rollins, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry, in collaboration with Brown University. An award of $34,000 was made in 2015-2016 to engage and mentor undergraduate students in scientific research. The College continues to recruit and train secondary mathematics and science teachers with the support of a fiveyear Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program grant from the National Science Foundation. In 2015-2016, the program began its third year under the direction of Mary Ellen Sullivan, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Teacher Education. The grant, which will provide $868,618 over five years, provides participating students scholarship support during the final two years of the baccalaureate program. In fall 2015, 21 students participated in the Scholars-on-Track program. Funded through a five-year $599,956 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, activities are led by Patricia Grove, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, and Pamela Kerrigan, Ph.D., Co-Principal Investigator.

SISTERS OF CHARITY MORE THAN 160 YEARS AGO, THE SISTERS OF CHARITY founded the College of Mount Saint Vincent to provide excellent liberal education in the Catholic tradition, preparing students for lives of professional accomplishment and service. With great pride, we strive to fulfill this mission. In the tradition of the Sisters of Charity, we ask everyone who works at the College to be committed to this fundamental purpose: to educate the whole person, to take part in a lively conversation with religious faith, and to engender a dedication to service. Many Sisters of Charity continue to serve the College actively today. Listed here are Sisters who, during the past year, have lent their talent, wisdom, and spirit in a variety of capacities to work on behalf of the College. They serve in many areas: as trustees, professors, administrators, in campus ministry, advancement, and institutional research, as well as volunteers in numerous ways. With immense gratitude, we acknowledge and celebrate their ongoing dedication and commitment to the College.

The School of Professional and Graduate Studies has also expanded its offerings of undergraduate, graduate, and not-for-credit programs to adult students seeking credentials for professional advancement. The Accelerated Nursing program, which launched in 2014, capitalizes on the College’s exceptional capacity in nursing education. The program allows individuals with bachelor’s degrees from accredited colleges or universities in other fields to earn a nursing degree in only a year and a half. Students can pursue Accelerated Nursing at the Riverdale campus or at the College’s midtown Manhattan location. During the spring 2017 semester, the College will move its Manhattan site from West 43rd Street to Columbus Circle. The state-of-the-art facility will house graduate education, business, and nursing programs, as well as Accelerated Nursing. The

space will also include a computer lab, seminar room, nursing lab, and an apartment for simulated nursing home care practices. The first graduates to receive the Master of Science in International Development and Service degree participated in the May 2016 Commencement. The program is designed to meet the international demand for socially responsive leaders who can facilitate partnerships in global and diverse communities. Students study a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum ranging across key issues, such as social policy and development, global health, multicultural education, and more. The program, in collaboration with IPSL (formerly the International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership), integrates learning with substantial, hands-on volunteer service experience in the United States, Asia, Europe, and South America.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, the Mount received approval for another Master of Science in Education degree program. Leading to dual adolescent certification in a content area and special education, the program will be offered through a Teacher Residency Program. Teacher Residency Program participants will spend a year working in the classroom as apprentices with their graduate course work in the evening, in order to fully understand the needs of students and best practices for delivering instruction. Teachers trained in this type of clinically-rich setting have been shown to be both more effective and more committed to the teaching profession.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING Generations of donors contribute annually to keep the College of Mount Saint Vincent strong, and their dedicated support allows the Mount to continue its mission for tomorrow’s students as well. There are many opportunities for giving to the College, and gifts can take several forms. Most contributions also provide the donor with an income tax deduction for the year of the gift. Please carefully consider the many options available for your future giving. ANNUAL FUND An Annual Fund gift is an opportunity to provide an unrestricted contribution to the Mount. The Annual Fund supports all areas of the College including financial aid, faculty development, buildings and grounds maintenance, student activities, and upgraded technology programs.

CAPITAL GIFTS Capital gifts are designated by the donor to fund the College’s capital needs, such as construction and renovation projects. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships give talented and deserving students the opportunity to afford a Mount education. Gifts can be made to a general scholarship fund or to the Scholarship Tribute Dinner to benefit all scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named and will support future generations of students.

For more information about giving to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, contact Daniel Regan, Director for Development/Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations, at (718) 405-3342 or daniel.regan@mountsaintvincent.edu.

WAYS TO GIVE CASH Gifts of cash immediately benefit the College. Checks, cash, and contributions made through a donor’s Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit or debit card are gratefully accepted. SECURITIES Like cash contributions, a gift of securities entitles the donor to an income tax deduction in the year it is given. The most convenient way to give a gift of securities is to arrange a transfer by a broker to the College’s account. To make a gift of securities, contact the College’s broker: Joan Donovan Merrill Lynch 2 World Financial Center, 40th floor New York, NY 10281 (800) 338-2814 x5230 or (212) 236-5230 CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Many businesses have matching gift programs, which can double or even triple a gift to the College. They are easy to arrange and are of no cost to the donor. Please contact your employer’s human resources office for more information about matching gifts.

PLANNED GIFTS Planned gifts are popular and creative ways to support the Mount, and can allow you to receive significant financial benefits during your lifetime. BEQUESTS You may include the Mount in your will by designating a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to the College. PLEASE REMEMBER: • Any gift can be made in honor or in memory of someone special. • In order to receive a 2016 charitable income tax deduction, gifts must be postmarked by December 31. All credit card gifts must be processed by December 31 as well. • The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers age 70 ½ or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, including colleges, universities, and independent schools. To make a gift via the IRA Charitable Rollover, please contact your IRA plan administrator. • Gifts can be made online at mountsaintvincent.edu/giving.
