LETTER FROM THE SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, This year is the 200th anniversary of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of New York. These dynamic women have devoted themselves—through selfless and faithful service—to this city and its residents for two centuries. Their impact is evident in the organizations they create and the communities they serve, which today extends well beyond New York to areas of need around the world. During the past year, a series of events were dedicated to the Sisters to celebrate their considerable achievements and the spirit that inspired them. In some ways, this Annual Report is another reflection of their success. Your support illustrates the resonance of the mission they entrusted to the College. The contributions you make help to ensure the continuation of the work they began—opening worlds of opportunity to promising students without regard to family means, and fostering personal accomplishment and service to the common good. In the following pages, we present examples of the ways Mount Saint Vincent is working to enhance our proud heritage as an institution established by the Sisters of Charity. Those efforts include the recently announced Ad Lux capital campaign. The most ambitious fundraising effort in the College’s history, with a goal of $42,000,000, the Ad Lux campaign will ensure that Mount Saint Vincent offers an exceptional liberal arts education in the Catholic tradition to talented students of every background for generations to come. It is significant and appropriate that the College’s Annual Fund surpassed $1,000,000 for the first time during this celebratory year. Support of the Annual Fund is essential. It benefits the College’s academic, scholarship, financial aid, and co-curricular programs. The success of the Annual Fund is the latest affirmation of the College’s quality and the achievements of our students and faculty. We are fortunate that donors, like you, remain committed to sustaining educational excellence. We are optimistic about the future, the strength of our community, and the enduring vitality of our mission. Thank you for all that you do. I look forward to what we will make possible together in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Madeleine Melkonian college of mount saint vincent

Mount Establishes First Endowed Professorships Faculty Chairs Funded Through Gifts to Ad Lux Campaign The family of Jean Ames DeNunzio has established the first endowed professorship in College history. The Jean Ames DeNunzio Chair for Faculty Excellence will honor Jean DeNunzio, alumna and trustee emerita, and will recognize the outstanding contributions of Mount faculty members to their academic disciplines. The DeNunzio family made the commitment in 2014, and the gift has achieved distinction as one of the first major contributions to the College’s Ad Lux capital campaign. The Ad Lux campaign recognizes and preserves the College’s legacy of providing a transformative educational experience to all students. Announced during Reunion and Homecoming Weekend, the campaign—with a goal of $42,000,000—is the most ambitious fundraising initiative in the College’s history. Ad Lux, which means “toward the light” in Latin, will provide comprehensive support for several of the College’s strategic priorities.
Funds will increase financial aid resources for students, endow professorships, support academic and programmatic innovations, improve and upgrade facilities, significantly augment the Mount’s endowment and annual fund, and support its commitment as a Sisters of Charity college. Endowed professorships allow the College to not only reward and retain its outstanding faculty, but also attract scholars from other institutions with a demonstrated passion for teaching. “An endowed professorship is a rare honor in academia,” said Provost Sarah Stevenson. “It also raises the bar for the institution, ensuring only the most qualified candidates—in terms of both teaching and research—will apply for faculty positions.” Jean DeNunzio served for many years on the College’s Board of Trustees. The $2,000,000 professorship established in her name is intended to celebrate
President Flynn announcing the Ad Lux campaign and the establishment of three endowed faculty chairs.
not only her devotion to the College, but also Mount Saint Vincent’s standards of teaching excellence, which Jean and her fellow trustees have worked so diligently to champion. Continued on page 31

SISTERS OF CHARITY IN 1847, THE SISTERS OF CHARITY OF NEW YORK founded the College of Mount Saint Vincent to provide excellent liberal education in the Catholic tradition, preparing students for lives of professional accomplishment and service. With great pride, we strive to fulfill this mission. In the tradition of the Sisters of Charity, we ask everyone who works at the College to be committed to this fundamental purpose: to educate the whole person, to take part in a lively conversation with religious faith, and to engender a dedication to service. Listed here, in commemoration of the Sisters of Charity of New York’s 200th Anniversary, are the names of all the Sisters who have lent their talent, wisdom, and spirit in a variety of capacities to work on behalf of the College. With immense gratitude, we acknowledge and celebrate their leadership, dedication, and commitment to Mount Saint Vincent. Mott Street Scholarships: Dreams Have a Home at the Mount The Mott Street Scholarship Program serves talented students who have persevered through foster care or homelessness and who are educationally and emotionally ready for college. The public support and social services available to these individuals typically end when they turn 18. At this point, these young people are on their own, trying to figure out the rest of their lives while all else is in flux. The need is stark. Of the 10,000 young people who aged out of foster care in New York State in 2016, a mere 350 are now pursuing educational programs beyond high school. The Program was named in honor of the Sisters of Charity’s first ministry in New York City, the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum, which was established in 1817 between Mott and Prince Streets.
“These young people have every educational opportunity that is afforded to every student at Mount Saint Vincent,” said President Charles L. Flynn, Jr., who takes a personal interest in each of the Mott Street Scholars, championing their cause at every opportunity. “They face huge hurdles in life and they are accomplishing extraordinary things. Alumnae/i can be very proud of this College. There’s no other Program like this in the United States. We are committed to social justice. We are committed to opportunity. And we are transforming lives and giving individuals an authentic opportunity to be able to be fully self-reliant and to have the biggest opportunities in the world open to them.”
Two years ago, the College began collaborating with Covenant House New York, an organization that cares for and shelters homeless and trafficked youth. The objective is to identify young people eager to attend college, but who lack the necessary financial resources and support to get there. The Mott Street Scholarship Program covers tuition, room and board, fees, books, and insurance. As with all students, the Mount provides supplementary academic and counseling resources, along with fundamental tools needed for success, such as a computer. But most of all, Mott Street Scholars receive year-round housing for all four years they are enrolled. At Mount Saint Vincent, they are finally home. In spring of 2016, there was a single Mott Street Scholar. By the following semester there were 10. It’s succeeding, too: by the end of the Program’s first full year, nearly all scholarship recipients were in good academic standing and one had earned a 4.0. Now in its second year, there are 19 Mott Street Scholars. Students in the Mott Street Scholarship Program are immersed in college life, complete with the rich and varied opportunities that all Mount students enjoy. Yet the cost of serving those students is much greater than it is for more typical students at the Mount. The College intends to enroll ten Mott Street Scholars each year, and the recently announced Ad Lux campaign aims to build an endowment of $5,000,000 to help sustain and grow the Program. The goal is to serve even more displaced and disadvantaged youth with the ambition and talent to transform their lives. The College is also seeking annual gifts of $25,000 to fund current scholarships. Pictured: The Sisters of Charity’s Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum, circa 1825.
MAUREEN A. HENEGAN ’78, a trustee of Mount Saint Vincent, helped facilitate the College’s collaboration with Covenant House New York, and funded the first Mott Street endowed scholarship.
JOAN BACKER MADDY ’50 made a generous gift to fund the first Mott Street annual scholarship.

New Construction to Support Growth and Ensure Quality
E
nrollment in the Undergraduate College at Mount Saint Vincent has grown by more than 10 percent since 2010. In recent years, out-of-state students have accounted for as many as one-fifth of entering students. In order to uphold the College’s longstanding tradition of providing exceptional educational value to a growing student population, Mount Saint Vincent is planning for new Nursing Simulation Laboratories and additional residential space on campus through the construction of a new building. The College has developed plans for a six-story building, totaling 64,000 square feet, to be located between Founders Hall and Seton Hall. The Nursing Program will occupy the first two floors, while resident students will have suite-style housing throughout the rest of the building. Separate entrances for the Nursing Simulation Laboratories and the residence hall will ensure the seamless functioning of the building’s dual purpose. The Nursing Program—which is frequently recognized for its outstanding commitment to student success—is one of the College’s most rigorous and competitive academic programs. Expanding facilities will help keep Mount Saint Vincent’s Nursing Program among the best in the region. State-of-the-art, self-contained, highfidelity Nursing Simulation Laboratories will support nursing clinical training and prepare our students for practicum placements in health care settings. “We have a duty to train our students to handle the increasing complexity of nursing care,” said Judith Erickson, Dean and Professor Nursing. “Patients today are much sicker, presenting more complex diseases than ever before. Fully equipped, technologically advanced labs are essential to the Mount’s commitment to offer that high-level training.” The new construction will feature highly sophisticated laboratories, consisting of assessment and evaluation rooms, hospital beds, lifelike robotic simulators, and live exam rooms. The technology reflects the latest and best practices for training nursing professionals, such as observation rooms with one-way mirrors and video cameras to enable live observation and evaluation, as well as real-time playback. † Indicates deceased.

Mary DiBuono, Director for Clinical and Simulation Learning, recalled a time when nursing students learned many skills by practicing on each other—an outdated method that falls far short of the ideal. “We’re constantly reviewing best practices, and our goal is to prepare our students for the highest levels of proficiency and competence before they ever set foot in a clinical setting.” The simulation experience enables students to encounter the sights, sounds, and responses of a real patient, safely and under supervision. Depending on the lesson programmed by the instructor, the simulator can breathe, talk, go into cardiac arrest, respond to medication, and more—“anything a real patient might do, but without the high stress of a real-life emergency,” said Ms. DiBuono. The new labs will be available to all undergraduate nursing majors and graduate students enrolled in one of three nursing specialty tracks. While the curriculum will remain the same, the laboratories will allow for expansion as the programs continue to grow. “These plans anticipate and prepare for continued growth,” said Dr. Erickson. “Our students deserve the very best in technological capabilities that will prepare them to join the ranks of the besttrained healthcare professionals of the future.”

A Contemplative’s Legacy An unexpected gift from the family of a modern-day contemplative has opened new vistas for spiritual opportunities for the Mount community. The Brother AelredSeton Shanley Endowment for Spirituality Programming will enable Campus Ministry to enhance their offerings in three ways. The funding will support more frequent student retreats, will endow two additional Seton Service and Leadership Scholarships, and will provide funding toward the restoration of the historic Roosevelt Opus IV organ in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Brother Aelred-Seton Shanley was a lay Benedictine monk who, in the latter half of the 20th century, built the Hermitage of the Dayspring, a secluded retreat in the hills of northwestern Connecticut. After Brother Shanley’s death in 2006, proceeds from the sale of the property were donated to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, thanks to the efforts of his sister, Lorraine Shanley, who serves on the College’s Mission and Ministry Advisory Council. “Our culture and our society have adopted a very hectic pace, with every day heavily scheduled,” said Matthew Shields, Director for Mission and Ministry. “Retreats provide an oasis where students can reflect and pray. We hope to equip them with tools they can incorporate into their daily lives.”

Retreats are open to all, but Mr. Shields hopes to attract more students during their second year. “First-year students have so many options and activities to choose from. We believe sophomores need a little love, too!”
As the program grows, the Office of Campus Ministry will shift retreat leadership to students. “It’s especially effective to have juniors and seniors working with freshmen and sophomores,” Ms. O’Loughlin said.
“Retreats provide an oasis where students can reflect and pray. We hope to equip them with tools they can incorporate into their daily lives.” MATTHEW SHIELDS DIRECTOR FOR MISSION AND MINISTRY
In addition to increasing the number of extremely popular weekend offerings (which fill up quickly), Campus Ministry is laying the groundwork for a weekly on-campus experience that provides students some refuge from the pressures of daily living. “It’s great to get away to a retreat center, but student life can become so frenetic they don’t even have time to plan the trip,” said Kathryn O’Loughlin, Associate Director for Campus Ministry. “We felt the need for sanctuary is much more immediate. We want to encourage students to take a break, even for just an hour a week, to look inward and reflect on bigger questions in their own lives.”
Brother Shanley’s legacy will seed further growth of the Seton Service Leadership Program. “Some of the best and brightest students in the College’s recent history have been Seton Scholars, committed to academic excellence and engaged in meaningful service and community building,” said Mr. Shields. “Sometimes we’ve had to turn away excellent candidates, but now we can expand our reach.”
Finally, the new funding will help restore the Roosevelt Opus IV organ in the Mount’s Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. One of the oldest of its kind, the organ is still in working condition, resplendent with hand-carved wood and vaulting pipes. Built in 1873, it was last repaired in 1960. “We hope to establish a series of concerts of classical music and medieval church hymns that will highlight the great composers who dedicated themselves to this aspect of a rich spiritual life,” said Mr. Shields. “Once the Opus IV organ has been restored to its former majesty, we will have Brother Shanley to thank for that as well.”

GRANTS AND CONTRACTS NEW In 2016-2017, the College announced a $500,000 award, secured by Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, from New York’s State and Municipal Projects Fund. The grant will support the construction of the College’s new Nursing Simulation Laboratories. In August 2016, the College was awarded a three-year Minority Science and Engineering Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund activities designed to promote greater achievement and enhance career education and professional development for STEM majors. In October 2016, the College began a three-year grant project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The College will receive $299,950 to initiate efforts to promote community safety through awareness, education, and preventative strategies, including bystander training, for sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. The James G. Houlihan Family Partnership awarded $25,000 to strengthen the Joseph and Rose Murray Scholarship endowment. The Louis and Rachel Rudin Foundation continued its generous support of the College with an award of $30,000 for nursing student scholarships. The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust awarded the College $15,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students. The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities made a new award of $15,000. The grant, made in memory of Yvonne Raskob, supported scholarships for nursing students. Sterling National Bank awarded $15,000 to acquire the software necessary to operate the College’s new Business Research Center. The Elizabeth Seton Library was awarded $5,302 from the New York State Department of Education’s Coordinated Collection Development Aid Program to support academic collection acquisition.
CONTINUING SUPPORT In October 2016, the College of Mount Saint Vincent began the third year of a five-year Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions grant totaling up to $2.3 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant assists institutions serving a high proportion of Hispanic students by developing and increasing their academic offerings. Title V grant funds continue to enhance the College’s Academic Resource Center, Mount Access Program, and Oxley Career Education Program. The Fall 2016 semester brought the second year of a U.S. Department of Education grant, totaling $1.2 million, to continue operating the SSS TRIO program at the College through 2020. The College received $278,539 in the year to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students. The 2016-2017 fiscal year was the third year of the College’s award to operate a New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The program is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate promising students who will succeed at the college level and beyond. The grant will provide more than $3 million in support during the five-year period. In September 2016, James Fabrizio, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, began the final year of a three-year research project funded by a National Institutes of Health Academic Research Enhancement Award. The grant, totaling $195,000, will enable Dr. Fabrizio and student researchers to further studies of late-stage maturation of spermatozoa in fruit flies. The College continues to recruit and train secondary mathematics and science teachers with the support of a five-year Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant from the National Science Foundation. In 2016-2017, the program began its fourth year, under the direction of Mary Ellen Sullivan, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Teacher Education. The grant, which will provide $868,618 over five years, provides participating students scholarship support during the final two years of the baccalaureate program. The 2016-2017 academic year was the final year of a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program. Funding over the grant period totaled $599,596. Twenty two students received scholarship assistance and participated in enrichment activities led by Principal Investigator Patricia Grove, Ph.D., and Co-Principal Investigator Pamela Kerrigan, Ph.D.

Of his mother’s unswerving devotion to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Peter DeNunzio said, “The Mount has been an enduring passion of my mother’s. Our whole family has come to understand why she believes the College to be such a unique and important place. We are proud to make this commitment to the Ad Lux campaign, as a tribute to her affection, in order to ensure outstanding faculty remain at the heart of this institution.” In addition to the Jean Ames DeNunzio Chair for Faculty Excellence, funds were secured in the 2016-2017 year for a second professorship, the Sisters of Charity 200th Anniversary Chair, which will recognize the congregation’s two centuries of service and leadership. The Ad Lux Chair, a third professorship, has also been established through an anonymous commitment to the capital campaign. Four extraordinary Mount faculty members have been honored with these professorship awards: Edward Zukowski is the Jean Ames DeNunzio Professor of Religious Studies and James J. Fabrizio is the Jean Ames DeNunzio Professor of Biology; Amir Niknejad is the Sisters of Charity 200th Anniversary Associate Professor of Mathematics; and Ioanna Visviki is the Ad Lux Associate Professor of Biology. “In higher education, there’s no better signifier of extraordinary accomplishment and service than a chaired professorship,” said President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. “It is the highest affirmation to give.”

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING Generations of donors contribute annually to keep the College of Mount Saint Vincent strong, and their dedicated support allows the Mount to continue its mission for future students as well. There are many opportunities for giving to the College and gifts can take several forms. Most contributions also provide the donor with an income tax deduction for the year of the gift. Please carefully consider the many options available for your future giving. ANNUAL FUND An Annual Fund gift is an opportunity to provide an unrestricted contribution to the Mount. The Annual Fund supports all areas of the College including financial aid, faculty development, buildings and grounds maintenance, student activities, and upgraded technology programs.
CAPITAL GIFTS Capital gifts are designated by the donor to fund the College’s capital needs, such as construction and renovation projects. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships give talented and deserving students the opportunity to afford a Mount education. Gifts can be made to a general scholarship fund or to the Scholarship Tribute Dinner to benefit all scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named and will support future generations of students.
For more information about giving to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, contact Daniel Regan, Director for Development/Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations, at (718) 405-3342 or daniel.regan@mountsaintvincent.edu.
WAYS TO GIVE CASH Gifts of cash immediately benefit the College. Checks, cash, and contributions made through a donor’s Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit or debit card are gratefully accepted. SECURITIES Like cash contributions, a gift of securities entitles the donor to an income tax deduction in the year it is given. The most convenient way to give a gift of securities is to arrange a transfer by a broker to the College’s account. To make a gift of securities, contact the College’s broker: Joan Donovan Merrill Lynch 2 World Financial Center, 40th floor New York, NY 10281 (800) 338-2814 x5230 or (212) 236-5230 CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Many businesses have matching gift programs, which can double or even triple a gift to the College. They are easy to arrange and are of no cost to the donor. Please contact your employer’s human resources office for more information about matching gifts.
PLANNED GIFTS Planned gifts are popular and creative ways to support the Mount and can allow you to receive significant financial benefits during your lifetime. BEQUESTS You may include the Mount in your will by designating a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to the College. PLEASE REMEMBER: • Any gift can be made in honor or in memory of someone special. • In order to receive a 2017 charitable income tax deduction, gifts must be postmarked by December 31. All credit card gifts must be processed by December 31 as well. • The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers age 70 ½ or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, including colleges, universities, and independent schools. To make a gift via the IRA Charitable Rollover, please contact your IRA plan administrator. • Gifts can be made online at mountsaintvincent.edu/giving. 41
