LETTER FROM THE SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, This year, the College of Mount Saint Vincent was ranked as one of the nation’s 50 Best Small Colleges by Money magazine, and was also included on the publication’s “Best Colleges for Your Money 2018” listing. The rankings are based on factors that combine educational quality, affordability, and alumnae/i success. This is far from first time the College has been recognized for providing exceptional academic opportunities to talented students. As you know, Mount Saint Vincent has prepared successive generations of students— often among the first generation of their families to pursue higher education—for lives of professional achievement and dedicated service. The College is always delighted to celebrate these accolades because they honor the mission and values entrusted to it by the Sisters of Charity. The College’s dedicated community of alumnae/i and friends can be immensely proud that this institution remains purposefully and steadfastly committed to expanding authentic educational opportunity. Despite the challenges facing colleges and universities across the country, every Mount undergraduate with need benefits from institutional scholarships and financial aid. For a great many students from middle class backgrounds, these awards alleviate the challenges they and their families face in financing higher education. For others, such as the young people benefiting from the Mott Street Scholarship Program who have persevered through foster care or homelessness, it creates the hope of realizing one’s potential. Authentic opportunity, of course, extends beyond scholarships and financial assistance. It requires the pursuit of academic excellence. The College remains focused on providing students the exemplary instruction, resources, and experiences necessary to acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed. The Ad Lux capital campaign, announced a year ago, is vital to this effort. The campaign priorities—including endowed professorships, a robust scholarship endowment, and the state-of-the-art nursing simulations laboratories being constructed as a part of Aquino Hall— enhance the College’s ability to effectively serve its students. Our community has enthusiastically responded to the Ad Lux capital campaign—commitments now surpass $35,000,000, putting the goal of $42,000,000 within reach. Additionally, during the 2017-2018 year, the remarkable generosity of our alumnae/i and friends enabled the Annual Fund to once again surpass $1,000,000. These gifts, and the loyalty that inspired them, allow the College to sustain it commitments to excellence and opportunity. Thank you for all that you contribute to the College, and for your devotion to its mission and students. Sincerely,
Madeleine Melkonian

MOTT STREET SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM THE MOTT STREET SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM serves talented students who have persevered through foster care or homelessness and who are educationally and emotionally ready for college. We are deeply grateful to the donors of the Mott Street Scholarship Program, and their commitment to giving these young individuals every educational opportunity that is afforded to each student at Mount Saint Vincent.

Mount Community “Sleeps Out” in Support of Homeless Youth
O
n any given night in America, tens of thousands of unaccompanied youth—young people living without the support of a parent or guardian—are searching for a safe place to sleep. In fact, some two million youth experience homelessness each year. They may be living in shelters or motels, riding the subway all night, or sleeping in cars or doorways. Every day brings concern for safety and survival. Beyond basic questions of security, the uncertainty and instability these young people face disrupt their education. Equally concerning is the fact that these young people all too often develop diminished expectations for the future—and as a result, will forgo the opportunity to realize their potential through higher education. Those who do pursue postsecondary education face tremendous challenges. College financing can be nearly impossible and once these individuals reach the age of 18, they no longer qualify for most social services. Sadly, only about two percent of formerly fostered youth go on to earn college degrees, compared to 25 percent of the general population. The College of Mount Saint Vincent established the Mott Street Scholarship Program to address this, identifying talented youth who have persevered through foster care or homelessness and who are educationally and emotionally ready for college. The Program covers tuition, room and board, fees, books, and insurance—and as with all students, the Mount provides supplementary academic and counseling resources, along with the fundamental tools needed for success, such as a laptop. Most of all, Mott Street Scholars receive year-round housing for all four years they are enrolled. At Mount Saint Vincent, they are finally home. The response to the program has been exceptional and has grown from one student in Spring 2016 to 26 in the current academic year. “These young people are among the finest and most committed students of any the Mount has ever seen in its long history,” said President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. “Many are active in Campus Ministry and several aspire to careers in teaching or social services. All are Leaders in Service, and we expect many will begin working with other homeless youth. Their success inspires tremendous hope of an alternative future, one that will benefit not just the students, but the world as well.” To further this notion and its commitment to service, the College is collaborating with Covenant House New Jersey to host a Sleep Out in solidarity with homeless youth on April 12. Covenant House, a 40-year-old organization that provides safe shelter, services, and opportunities for homeless and trafficked youth, is one of the organizations the College works with to recruit Mott Street Scholars.

The Sleep Out is a powerful fundraising and awareness initiative developed by Covenant House in which participants commit to sleeping outside for one night. The aim is to call attention to the problem, while immersing participants in the experience of homelessness. The event will further demonstrate the stark contrast between the challenges that exist and the great opportunities that are available through the Mott Street Scholarship Program at the College. “Our Sleep Out cannot allow us to fully grasp what it truly is like to be homeless, but it can help us raise the funds and awareness so others don’t have to be,ˮ said Lynne Bongiovanni, Dean of the College. “We are marking our solidarity with the members of our campus community who have experienced homelessness. We are drawing attention to the fact that less than 10 percent of foster youth in the U.S. graduate from college. And we are committing ourselves to the College’s mission through our understanding of our common humanity, our commitment to human dignity, and our obligations to one another. ˮ The Mott Street Scholarship Program is a significant, mission essential commitment for Mount Saint Vincent. Alumnae/i, friends, and trustees continue to facilitate its growth with generous contributions—in the 2017-2018 year, cash gifts for the program exceeded $238,000, and more than $1,250,000 has been committed to a permanent endowment for the Program. To advance the Program’s exposure, the College will invite the entire community to support the Sleep Out, the first event exclusively benefitting the Mott Street Scholarship Program. All are invited to participate.

MOUNT WINS
NEARLY $1 MILLION TO BOOST STUDENT SUCCESS IN STEM
T
he College of Mount Saint Vincent won $959,955 from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program to promote achievement across STEM fields and provide financial assistance to exemplary students in the Division of Natural Sciences. The five-year grant period began on October 1, 2018. The NSF funding will provide four-year scholarships to 22 high-achieving students with limited economic means, and will support the Mount’s Scholars-on-Track II program, which aims to expand diversity in the STEM workforce by recruiting students with strong academic potential from underrepresented and underserved populations, while promoting improved academic performance, retention, degree completion, and post-baccalaureate opportunities. Aquino ’53. Maria Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco Aquino served as the 11th President of the Philippines, becoming the first woman to hold that office—and Asia’s first female President. Yet before she entered politics, she was a selfproclaimed “plain housewife,” married to Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., a staunch critic of President Ferdinand Marcos. After her husband was assassinated, she emerged as a leader of the opposition and wrested the presidency from Marcos’s 21-year rule. Widely recognized as a champion of democracy throughout Asia and a defender of human rights worldwide, Corazon Aquino garnered scores of awards and honors, among them the J. William Fulbright Prize for
President Charles L. Flynn, Jr., Provost Sarah Stevenson, Chair of the Board of Trustees Susan L. Whitney ’72, Assistant Professor of Nursing Theodora Levine, students Miriam Concepcion ’19 and Lauramae Cocchi ’19, Director of Nursing Simulation Erica Gentles, and Dean of Students Kelli Bodrato at the Aquino Hall groundbreaking.
International Understanding, the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights, and Time magazine’s Woman of the Year. She returned to her alma mater over the years—she was celebrated as an honorary degree recipient, Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa; honored with the Saint Vincent de Paul Award at the annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner; and received the College’s highest honor, the Elizabeth Seton Medal.
“There are heroic figures in history,” said President Charles L. Flynn, Jr., “and Corazon Aquino is one of them. The College of Mount Saint Vincent is very proud to have been an influence in her life. By naming our new multipurpose building for her, we are creating a memorial to her courage and service.” Excitement over the new project has been palpable.

CONTINUING SUPPORT In October 2017, the College began the fourth year of a fiveyear Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions grant totaling up to $2.3 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant assists institutions serving a high proportion of Hispanic students with developing and increasing their academic offerings. Title V grant funds continue to enhance the College’s the Academic Resource Center, the Mount Access Program, and the Oxley Career Education Program. The Fall 2017 semester brought the third year of a U.S. Department of Education grant, totaling $1.2 million, to continue operating the SSS TRIO program at the College through 2020. The College received $278,539 in the year to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students. The 2017-2018 fiscal year was the fourth year of the College’s a five-year award to operate a New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The program is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate promising students who will succeed at the college level and beyond. The grant will provide more than $3 million in support during the five-year period.
In October 2017, the College began the second year of a threeyear Minority Science and Engineering Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund activities designed to promote greater achievement, and enhance career education and professional development for STEM majors. The 2017-2018 fiscal year was the second year of a three-year grant project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). The College received $299,950 to reduce sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking through awareness, education, and preventative strategies, including bystander training. The College continues to train secondary mathematics and science teachers with the support of a five-year Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant from the National Science Foundation. In 2017-2018, the program began its fifth year, under the direction of Mary Ellen Sullivan, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Teacher Education. The grant, totaling $868,618 over 5 years, provides participating students scholarship support during the final two years of the baccalaureate program.

SISTERS OF CHARITY IN 1847, THE SISTERS OF CHARITY OF NEW YORK founded the College of Mount Saint Vincent to provide excellent liberal education in the Catholic tradition, preparing students for lives of professional accomplishment and service. With great pride, we strive to fulfill this mission. In the tradition of the Sisters of Charity, we ask everyone who works at the College to be committed to this fundamental purpose: to educate the whole person, to take part in a lively conversation with religious faith, and to engender a dedication to service. Listed here are Sisters who, during the past year, have lent their talent, wisdom, and spirit in a variety of capacities to work on behalf of the College. With immense gratitude, we acknowledge and celebrate their leadership, dedication, and commitment to Mount Saint Vincent

“In memorializing Corazon Aquino, the College is asking us all to follow her example,” said Susan L. Whitney ’72, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “She was a remarkable person who embodied the highest ideals of this College— including faith, service, modesty, and moral courage.” Aquino Hall, a five-story, 56,000 squarefoot building, will be situated between Founders Hall and Seton Hall. The top three floors will provide housing for 120 students—these will be the first residential additions since the opening of Mastronardi Hall in 2007. Since then, the College’s student population has grown by nearly 20 percent. 30
college of mount saint vincent
The lower two floors of Aquino Hall will house technologically advanced nursing simulation laboratories that will support the latest and best practices for training nursing professionals. Nursing remains one of the College’s signature programs and the new simulation laboratories will keep our program strong and at the cutting edge of the profession. Through instructional technologies—including state-of-the-art patient simulators, live-action simulation, and observation areas—the laboratories will allow students to master the essential skills for several nursing specializations: clinical assessment and adult/primary care, as well as pediatric, maternity, and community health nursing. Planning any major construction project requires careful preparation. In recent months, the College has completed all engineering and architectural work, filed necessary permits and site surveys, and obtained approvals from the community board and city planners.
“Now comes the exciting part,” said Kevin DeGroat, Vice President for Operations. “It has taken a lot of cooperation among many departments and individuals, but everyone has been focused and on point. And of tremendous value was the College’s long-standing master plan, which clearly states how campus growth should dovetail with the institution’s mission and vision.” The $15.5 million project—the first new construction on campus since the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center in 2009—is expected to take about 18 months to complete, with a proposed opening in 2020.

Eleven students will be recruited to begin studying in Fall 2019, and a second group of 11 will enroll in Fall 2020. “Scholars-on-Track II further enhances Mount Saint Vincent’s efforts to prepare students for important STEM careers,” said Dr. Pamela Kerrigan, Director for the Division of Natural Sciences and Associate Professor of Chemistry. “This grant builds on the success of the College’s previous S-STEM award, and advances the College’s commitment to making higher education available to talented students without regard for their financial means.” To support student engagement and success, the College will offer students an array of career development and enrichment activities, such as conducting scientific research with faculty, presenting at national conferences, attending workshops and career panels, and visiting museums and academic centers. Scholarship recipients will also receive a summer stipend, guaranteeing additional research opportunities, internships, and the ability to explore careers in all disciplines of the scientific enterprise. “It is an honor for the College that the exceptional work by the faculty in the Division of Natural Sciences has been recognized by the NSF,” said Dr. Ana Ribeiro, Associate Professor of Biology. “We’re training the next generation of scientists and expanding opportunities for all students.” The program is under the direction of Principal Investigator Pamela Kerrigan and Co-Principal Investigators Ana Ribeiro and Erika Gillette, Chair and Instructor of Teacher Education. This is Mount Saint Vincent’s second S-STEM grant, having received NSF funding from 2012-2017.

Remembering Kaitlyn Trinidad ON JULY 6, Mount student Kaitlyn Trinidad ’20 was returning home to New Jersey after a Fourth of July vacation when another vehicle struck her family’s car. Kaitlyn was killed instantly, along with her father and her three younger sisters. Only her mother survived. News of the accident spread rapidly. Kaitlyn’s boyfriend, Steven Ang ’20, telephoned Stephen “Kurt” Adela ’19, who began notifying Kaitlyn’s friends. Others sent word to Campus Ministry and Student Affairs, which began coordinating grief counseling. President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. wrote a letter to share the tragic news with the College community. With each telephone call and message, the shock and horror of the terrible loss reverberated across campus, the local community, and the tristate area. By all accounts, Kaitlyn “Kat” Trinidad was an exceptional student who hoped to follow in the footsteps of her mother, a hospital nurse. Around campus, she exuded warmth and boundless energy as she was coming into her own as a leader and role model. When she wasn’t with friends or studying long hours for her nursing requirements, she was performing with Filiment, a dance club on campus, or running for—and winning— the elected office of treasurer of SAMAHAN, a Filipino heritage club. “The last time I saw her was in May, at a restaurant with our friends,” said Tessa Condeza ’19, recalling how Kaitlyn could always lift her spirits or motivate her during late night study sessions at the Mount. “I’m really going to miss her positivity and love, but I feel at this moment Kaitlyn would want us to stay strong, keep going, and continue to succeed.”
“It is difficult to find the right words to describe what this loss has meant to Mount Saint Vincent,” said Gabrielle Occhiogrosso, Assistant Dean of Students. “The support our community has shown to each other through this tragedy has been remarkable, but it is really reflective of who our students are. Kaitlyn was a student who embodied everything we hope for at CMSV; she was academically focused, an emerging leader, talented, family-oriented, and had a wonderful circle of friends.” Before her death, Kaitlyn had already made a lasting impact at the College—so much so that scores of students approached the Office of Student Activities, Leadership, and Commuter Life to ask for guidance on creating a lasting tribute to the promising, charismatic nursing student. Several of Kaitlyn’s friends decided to start a scholarship in her name so that future students, who embody the values and dedication that Kaitlyn demonstrated, can realize the dream she was denied: becoming a nurse. With the support of President Flynn, Campus Ministry, Student Affairs, and Institutional Advancement, the Kaitlyn Trinidad Memorial Scholarship was established, and funds began pouring in. “Mount students are amazing,” said Kelli Bodrato, Dean of Students. “They felt strongly that the scholarship should honor academic achievement. Even in their grief, they were thinking ahead, which I find extraordinary in a group of people so young. They really stepped up, sharing ideas for how to raise money and honor Kaitlyn.”
And that’s exactly what the Mount community has done.
Now, students continue to lead fundraising efforts for the Kaitlyn Trinidad Memorial Scholarship—and with a goal of $100,000, the entire Mount community is helping to spread the word.
Within hours of hearing the terrible news, students had begun to mobilize. Kurt and another student drove upstate to offer support to Steven as he struggled to cope with his shock and grief. The day after the accident, some 35 students traveled to New Jersey to join hundreds of mourners for an impromptu memorial, sharing memories of Kaitlyn and her family.
Various clubs, student organizations, athletic teams, and individuals are selling wristbands, planning a talent show, writing letters to alumnae/i, organizing fundraising events, and driving donors to an online donation page. Kaitlyn’s dance troupe, Filiment, also performed at Reunion and Homecoming Weekend, spreading the word even further.
Kaitlyn will be remembered with great affection at the College—as a nursing major, as a member of SAMAHAN, and as an exceptional student in and outside the classroom.
“Kat could always make you smile,” said Danielle “Elle” Carlin ’19, a fellow member of SAMAHAN who was friends with Kaitlyn since her freshman year. Right from the start, she recalled, Kaitlyn was vivacious and encouraging—she wanted everyone around her to succeed. Many have echoed Elle’s sentiment. In late August as students returned to campus for the start of a new semester, a memorial service was held in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Students, faculty, and friends gathered to remember Kaitlyn and the Trinidad family, finding inspiration in her life and her commitment to others. Caroline Bandigan ’20 recalled spending time with Kaitlyn—hours that were filled with laughter and joy. “I think that’s how we should all remember her. Someone who gave her all even when she ran on empty, who never held back a laugh, and who loved wholeheartedly without boundary.” “Kat’s warmth and caring touched so many hearts,” said Kurt. “She had friends all over the Mount. She used to talk about bringing everyone together as a community. It’s amazing—even though she’s not here, she’s still doing that.”
