LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumnae/i and Friends,
What a year it’s been! Every year is an exciting year at the Mount, but 2024 has been particularly remarkable, as we conclude our first official year as the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
So much has taken place in the last few months—from the opening of Seton College to our expanded partnership with the Sisters of Charity through Dax House—I encourage you to read all about these remarkable endeavors (and more!) on the pages that follow.
When we first embarked on our journey to become a university, I shared with the greater Mount community that we would not be rewriting our history, nor would we become something completely unrecognizable. By earning university status and exploring updates to our brand and visual identity, we would transform traditions—applying a new look and feel, but continuing to keep our mission, learners, and community at the center of all we do.
With that came the idea that we are always moving forward. Though we are not immune to the very real challenges that plague institutions of higher education across our nation, Mount Saint Vincent continues to find shared success in our programs and partnerships. We stand out as an example of how to thrive into the future as a beacon of hope and an example of excellence. Always moving onward. All ways leading our students and University toward continued success.
As we prepare to turn our calendars over to 2025, we also prepare to enter the final year of our 2022-2025 Strategic Plan. We have found meaningful success in the current plan, and look forward to imagining future possibilities with our next plan. More work will come next year as groups of administrators, trustees, faculty, staff, alumnae/i, Sisters of Charity, and friends gather to plan the ways in which we will continue moving the Mount forward. I am eager to share more with you soon.
Finally, over the course of my presidency, I have been blessed to be able to witness the beautiful ways in which our institution ‘sees’ our learners and each other. Using Saints Vincent de Paul and Elizabeth Ann Seton as our guides and our inspiration, I want the University of Mount Saint Vincent to be seen for leaning into and living our mission and values at a time when so many other institutions are abandoning who they are. We are strong and we are committed—and our story remains relevant and essential to our past and current learners and the many yet to come.
I want to sincerely thank you for your commitment to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, the ways in which you each embody our mission, and your extraordinary generosity toward our talented and deserving students. I hope I can count on you for your support now and into the future, as all paths, all directions, and all ways continue to move us forward.
Sincerely,
Susan R. Burns, PhD

First Cohort of Seton College Students Begins Studies
FOR OVER TWO CENTURIES, the Sisters of Charity of New York have been dedicated to their mission of providing high-quality educational opportunities to all students— regardless of their financial or family means. Following in their footsteps, the University of Mount Saint Vincent is committed to providing transformative educational experiences that empower all students to reach their full potential and achieve their academic and personal goals, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for everyone.
There’s a path forward for all learners at the Mount.
In late 2023, the University of Mount Saint Vincent announced the launch of Seton College, a two-year associate degree program at the Mount for students who otherwise may have opted not to attend college. The first of its kind not just in New York City, but in the entire Northeast, Seton College offers students the opportunity to earn an associate degree in the liberal arts following one of three professional tracks (business, prehealth professions, or social sciences), all while remaining entirely debt free. Tuition and fees for Seton College are set to match the maximum amount of state and federal funding offered to these students—giving them the opportunity to begin their higher education journey without bearing the burden of student loans.
“Seton College gives these students—many of whom are already facing financial hardships—the opportunity to apply the full amount of their
federal student loan allowance toward a bachelor’s degree after graduation or enter the workforce without the impending burden of repaying loans,” shared President Susan R. Burns. “The relief this opportunity offers Seton College students, and their families, is indescribable.”
The Mount is forever indebted to the Sisters for their endless support of higher education, but their commitment has only been further recognized in their generosity to underwrite a significant investment for the startup funds necessary to launch Seton College. Following such a substantial gift, the Mount made the considerate decision to name the new two-year school after the Congregation’s founding mother and the first American-born Saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton.
What’s more, the first day of classes for Seton College students fell on August 27, the day before Elizabeth Ann Seton’s 250th birthday.
“When Dr. Burns and the Mount Saint Vincent Board approached me and asked if the Sisters would be interested in endowing the initial funds necessary to establish Seton College, it was—what some might say—a ‘no brainer,’” said Donna Dodge, SC, President of the Sisters of Charity of New York, at the dedication ceremony for the newly renovated space on the fifth floor of Founders Hall that Seton College calls home. “Our partnership with Mount Saint Vincent is one of our most coveted relationships, and we are confident that the University will carry on our mission in the many, many decades to come.”
To help establish Seton College, the Mount also partnered with the Come To Believe (CTB) Network, a nonprofit organization that works as an accelerator within the higher education space by helping institutions bring its model to life through a resultsdriven, affordable two-year commuter program. The model, developed under the leadership of Steve Katsouros, SJ, EdD, offers eligible students who would have otherwise been excluded from higher education the opportunity to earn an associate degree. Through another series of grants, bequests from our alumnae/i network, and generous donations—totaling over $8 million dollars—the once dream of Seton College has become a reality.
What used to be a storage room on the very top floor of Founders Hall is now a fully operational environment fitted with classrooms, offices, a cafeteria, and a lounge area for students to relax and study in between classes.
Gathered together on the first day of classes for Seton College students, His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, blessed Seton College, surrounded
by students, faculty, staff, and local community and political leaders. A ribbon cutting of the new space was also celebrated, with a small reception following for invited guests.
“Seton College, truly, is a dream come to life,” shared Dr. Burns in her remarks at the Dedication and Blessing. “What started off as a ‘hey, we can do that!’ quickly morphed into a ‘that’s right, we’re doing this!’ And we could not be more ecstatic to finally be able to say ‘wow, we did that!’”
The doors to Seton College are open to those who may not meet the standard admission requirements of the University, and those with high school records below what is considered necessary for admission to the Undergraduate College. Above all, students with exceptional financial need are welcome to pursue their dreams at Seton College. Students will take classes during three or four days of the
week and will be expected to work a part-time job—obtained through the help of several corporate partners—for the remainder of their weekdays and on weekends. They are also welcome to immerse themselves in everything the Mount’s campus has to offer, from student activities to service initiatives.
Its first cohort of 75 students will be taught by five faculty members led by founding Dean, Jason Ford, and Katie Alexander, Associate Dean for Academics, and Sharon Ortega, Associate Dean for Student Success and Engagement. As the first semester of classes continues, Dean Ford and his team hope to connect with local high schools in the area to spread the word about Seton College and all it can offer to those who may require additional academic support, but are motivated in obtaining a post-secondary degree.
“Elizabeth Seton’s life was marked by resilience, compassion, and a deep love for both God and humanity,” shared Sr. Donna. “By naming Seton College in her honor, we both aspire to embody these values and inspire our students
Thank you to the generous donors who supported the initial funds necessary to launch Seton College.

SAINT VINCENT’S annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner returned for yet another year on Tuesday, May 7, celebrating two remarkable honorees and raising funds for a most worthy cause: our talented and deserving student body.
We also, of course, were able to continue our University celebrations with the first Scholarship Tribute Dinner held under our new name.
Mount community members; guests; alumnae/i; Sisters of Charity; and leaders in businesses, government, healthcare, and social services all came together in singular support of the Mount’s robust and ever-growing scholarship programs. We’re sure you already know, but we like to shout it from the rooftops: 100%—yes, you read that right: 100%—of the University’s traditional undergraduate students receive scholarships and financial aid to help offset the cost of their education. That’s something that continues to be remarkable in today’s challenging higher education landscape.
We are proud to report that this year’s gala—which was once again held at stunning Gotham Hall in Manhattan— raised a grand total of over $511,800.
We, once again, offered the opportunity for those in the room—and even those following along from the comfort of their couches—to give back through our text-to-give campaign. The text-to-give campaign alone raised over $50,000 just from those tapping on their cell phone screens. It was an amazing way to rally support and build momentum among donors from near and far.
When asked to stand for recognition, the students invited to the gala received resounding applause—and a standing ovation—from the packed room of guests. A total of 35 student leaders from across the University joined us for the evening
and they represented the more than 1,400 undergraduates who received scholarships this academic year— cumulatively valued in excess of $40 million in institutional aid.
Having to attend to an urgent family matter, honoree Kevin M. McGovern was, unfortunately, unable to join us for the evening’s celebrations. He was dearly missed, but the Mount will find the appropriate time to honor him in the near future. Accepting the citation on his behalf was Trustee and dear friend of Kevin, Noreen M. Culhane '72. Noreen offered a beautiful reflection of Kevin’s work, their friendship and his introduction to the Mount community, and his dedication to serving populations of students who are not served by others.
Certainly no less influential, the Mount was also delighted to honor Allen J. West.
Allen offered a wonderful reflection on his personal experience in foster care, how helping today’s youth in foster care has become his life’s passion, and cited his appreciation of our Mott Street Scholarship Program.
Following the presentations to the honorees, President Burns took the stage to offer her remarks.
She shared a word that she selected earlier this year that she’s been using to inspire and guide the work that she has been doing throughout this academic year. That word is: seen.
“I have witnessed the beautiful ways in which our institution ‘sees’ our learners and each other. It is something that is central to our mission and our values as a Vincentian institution. Saint Vincent
de Paul saw each person he ministered to on the streets of 17th century France for the individual person they were and the dignity they deserved. We continue to emulate his goodness and that of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton today in the work we do, seeing our learners both within and beyond the classroom.”
Dr. Burns was also sure to thank the generous supporters of the Mount’s students and programs, who have made the University the Right Place on the River for students from near and far.
“We say that our students of today are the leaders of tomorrow, but it is important to note that YOU are stewards of their and our future. You build on the contributions made by the generations of those who came before you— the Sisters of Charity of New York, prior administrators, teachers, alums, and donors alike—to carry and enrich our legacy into the years to come. For that, I thank you. I thank you for the ways in which you help our students, and the University of Mount Saint Vincent, to be seen.”
We couldn’t have put it better if we tried. THANK YOU to all of our generous supporters who made the 2024 Scholarship Tribute Dinner a resounding success.
Thank you—to all our donors—for supporting yet another

ALWAYS GROWING: Announcing the UMSV School of Business
WITH THE EARLY 2024 ANNOUNCEMENT that the New York State Board of Regents had officially designated the Mount as one of New York State’s newest universities, Mount community members could almost feel a tangible swirl of excitement in the air. The campus was bustling with plans and excitement as the transition to university status would enable us to further initiatives already in the works with a goal of moving the University forward.
New name and new paths, but same forward commitment to thoughtful and strategic growth of our programs. Working as an entity under the larger university umbrella, the establishment of the University’s School of Business will usher in a new era of business education. To lead the School toward its bright future, the Mount recently appointed Raymond Pullaro, a multi-faceted technology executive, educator, and former dean at Long Island University, as the University’s first Dean of the School of Business.
Dean Pullaro brings decades of experience
in business and education, which include leading corporate teams in multiple areas such as investments, risk management, emerging markets, and more. In his prior role as dean at Long Island University, Dean Pullaro launched degree programs, expanded undergraduate enrollment, and established a student-managed investment fund. In addition to holding a US patent, he has published articles and book chapters and is an invited speaker at conferences across the US, Europe, and China.
Business remains one of the most popular majors among students choosing to attend four-year institutions. Dean Pullaro described four critical success factors that will inform future pathways for the School of Business: incorporating essential skills such as teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving; emphasizing business ethics throughout the curriculum, not just in single-course offerings; maintaining focus on the education of the whole person with regard to internships, mentorship, and extracurricular activities; and, finally, drawing inspiration from the Mount’s
commitment to a deserving student population and using every resource available to support their success.
“The Mount boasts a robust constellation of business departments—finance, accounting, economics and so on,” said Dean Pullaro. “We are positioned to differentiate the Mount from other schools whose focus on these foundational principles may not be as intentional as ours.”
To the existing array of undergraduate courses in business-related areas, the University will introduce new baccalaureate- and masters-level programing in marketing and public relations. Eventually, the School of Business will launch the first doctoral program at the University in business administration. Other goals include a speaker series in partnership with the Center for Leadership and the revival of the School of Business Advisory Council.
In a campus-wide effort to maximize the opportunities presented by the new School, Dean Pullaro is just one of President Burns’ dedicated leaders who have been guiding the University to this point and beyond—the Board of Trustees, the faculty and administration, and innumerable ardent and generous supporters. Among these is Trustee Peter D. DeNunzio, who recently made a foundational leadership gift in support of the emerging School of Business.
Peter’s gift to the School of Business was inspired by both his support for its mission and by his mother’s own experience as an economics major at the Mount.
Growing up in Yonkers and the first in her family to attend college, Jean Ames
DeNunzio '55/’80 enrolled as a day student at Mount Saint Vincent in 1951 and selected economics as her field of study. After her sophomore year, however, like many women of that era, Jean opted to set aside her studies to marry and start a family.
In 1978, with her children grown and still interested in economics, Jean returned to the Mount to complete her degree, graduating with the class of 1980 at the age of 50.
“My mother was very proud of her degree and used what she had learned to broaden her understanding of the business world and global economic policies,” Peter shared. “She truly loved her ‘second term’ at the Mount, especially her interaction with both students and faculty. She never gave up her goal to complete her education and obtain her diploma. And she wanted to do it at Mount Saint Vincent. That’s the kind of person she was.”
Peter then added:
“She was even proud that she had two class affiliations on her Mount diploma: 1955 and 1980!”
Throughout his own long career in business, Peter has headed several marketing, advertising, and digital communications organizations. He is a passionate supporter of education, serving on the University’s Board of Trustees as well as those of other educational institutions. He has played an important role in establishing the foundation for the School of Business, with a particular emphasis on marketing, digital communications, and public relations.
“This generation of future business leaders is fortunate
to have been born into a digital world,” added Peter. “They are supremely comfortable with technology, social media, and tools for research and learning that simply weren’t available to an earlier generation. We want to ensure the School of Business attracts motivated students seeking practical skills as well as the values the Mount has always stood for— the education of the whole individual through humanity, humility, and obligation to others. I truly hope and believe that my gift will serve as a catalyst for additional support from alumnae/i and the broader Mount community.”
Pointing to the critical need for more leadership gifts like Peter DeNunzio’s generous donation, Dean Pullaro added:
“A business education comprises many elements
beyond technical skills or prestigious internships, and the goal of launching the School of Business must be a community-wide effort. Creating the School of Business, and integrating existing curriculum with exciting new courses to match our students’ interests, requires substantial resources. We will continue to reach out to alumnae/i, family, and friends who share our belief that there has never been a better time for Mount Saint Vincent to plant a flag in the fertile space of business education.”
Dean Pullaro concluded by highlighting his goal to identify an additional donor wishing to leave a lasting legacy by naming the new School of Business during this momentous time, pushing the School of Business forward and into a successful and stable future.

SISTERS HILL FARM
Back in July, University of Mount Saint Vincent Campus Minister MJ Black took several Campus Ministry student workers on a road trip upstate to visit and serve at Sisters Hill Farm in Stanfordville, NY. Sisters Hill Farm, founded in 1996, is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) not-forprofit farm sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of New York. While upstate, MJ and the students met with Farmer Dave, long-time Sisters Hill Farm farmer, to learn about the CSA run by his team. The UMSV team then helped with farm share distribution—which is also distributed to CSA members in the Bronx—and packaged produce to be sent to a local food pantry.

VINCENT'S TABLE
SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS
Vincent’s Table is a collaborative hunger outreach initiative sponsored by both the University of Mount Saint Vincent and the Sisters of Charity of New York. The program addresses food insecurity needs in the northwest Bronx and southern Yonkers through several food distribution events each month—many done in collaboration with Feeding Westchester and the Saint Francis Breadline. Sisters of Charity and Mount students and employees frequently volunteer to help at the food distribution events. Vincent’s Table also set up a community refrigerator and pantry on campus, where Mount community members can leave what they can and take what they need.

FRIENDS OF HENRY HUDSON PARK
This past Summer, as part of their Summer Immersion Program, students in the University of Mount Saint Vincent’s Mount Access Program (MAP) partnered with the Friends of Henry Hudson Park for a day of community service in our very own neighborhood. The Friends of Henry Hudson Park is a local community organization run by Jodie Colon, a community organizer who worked for the Bronx Botanical Gardens for 20 years. Together, the MAP students worked to restore garden beds, clear trails, pull weeds, and remove invasive plant species. All their work—and more—helped the Riverdale community as a whole, beautifying a public space used by many in our neighborhood.

POTS
As part of their Summer Welcome and Orientation Week, Seton Service and Leadership Program Scholars visited Part of the Solution (POTS) on Webster Ave in the Bronx. POTS, which was cofounded by Jane Iannucelli, SC in 1982, offers a mosaic of services which come together to create a pathway forward for all who seek help. Services offered include meals, a mailroom, groceries, showers, a legal clinic, social services, and more! During their visit to POTS, Seton Service and Leadership Program students helped cook and compile take away lunches for over 3,800 people who face food insecurity right here in the Bronx.
Mount Saint Vincent athletes are leaders both in the classroom and on the field or court, sharing their unique talents and working to promote pride and spirit on campus. By participating in athletic programs, students not only learn skills to help them excel in their sport, but also develop skills needed to help them grow into deeply motivated and goal-oriented individuals. Your gift the Department of Athletics—which can be put toward the General Athletics Fund or toward a specific sport or program—will help our exceptional athletic teams purchase uniforms and equipment, offset the cost of tournament travel expenses, and engage our athletes in sportsmanship and team-

’PHINISH THE FIELD
Name another college or university in the country with a field as unique and strikingly beautiful as Marillac Field we’ll wait…
Dedicated in 2014, Marillac Field is situated on the banks of the Hudson River, offering breathtaking views of the Hudson and Palisades. Originally featuring a natural grass surface, the field underwent an incredible facelift in 2022, featuring the installation of a turf surface, lights, a press box, and a video scoreboard.
After the 2022 renovations were completed and the men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse programs returned to their home field, the decision was made to build a concession stand with
bathrooms on the south side of the field—an effort to 'PHINish the field. But these additions, of course, would not have been possible without the generous support of our DolFANS.
The ’PHINish The Field campaign was a tremendous success, with all four aforementioned teams helping to raise
over $102,000 to help fund the project. The inclusion of the concession stand and bathrooms has, by far, enhanced gameday experiences both in the Fall for soccer and Spring for lacrosse, a main priority for the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Thank you to all of our supporters!

ALWAYS HOME: Dax House at UMSV
The University of Mount Saint Vincent is no stranger to addressing the stark reality of homelessness in the collegeaged population. In support of this cause, the Mott Street Scholarship Program was established at the Mount in 2016 to provide comprehensive assistance to young people who have aged out of foster care or have triumphed over childhood homelessness. The Mott Street Scholarship encompasses full tuition coverage and year-round housing in our residence halls, ensuring a supportive and nurturing environment for those in need.
True to the Vincentian tradition, Depaul USA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the homelessness epidemic in the United States, inspired by the wisdom of our shared namesake, Saint Vincent de Paul, who studied at a college in the small town of Dax in France. Since 2009, Depaul USA has provided homelessness services to men, women, and children seeking supportive, temporary, or affordable housing across twelve major cities—including housing projects like Dax House, which directly addresses college and university student housing insecurity.
In a collaborative effort to further support Mount students facing housing insecurity—but who may not have had to face such struggles as childhood homelessness or the constraints of the foster care system—a Dax House was established at the University in partnership with Depaul USA and the Sisters of Charity of New York just this past Summer. This initiative provides low-cost, short-term and long-term housing for up to eight female students in their junior and senior years at the Mount in Dax House, located on the first floor of Rosary Hall on the Riverdale campus.
Matthew Janeczko, CEO and President of the Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corporation (SCHDC), had been searching for a location for the first Dax House in the Bronx for five years before he stumbled upon Rosary Hall.
“We looked at old convents and other buildings in Riverdale trying to find the perfect location,” Matthew said. “The Mount has always positioned itself as a place where everyone is
welcome. And after speaking with the Sisters of Charity, the first floor of Rosary Hall seemed like the perfect fit.”
Right across from the Convent and adjacent to the Great Lawn on the Mount’s campus, the space used to serve as a residence for Sisters. With plenty of empty storage space, a kitchen, and a living room to meet—and permission from Donna Dodge, SC, President of the Sisters of Charity—the space was transformed into residential apartments and renamed ‘Dax House.’ Students living in Dax House must work at least 10 hours each week, pay a nominal fee in rent each month, and meet with their resident in-house manager on a routine basis. The goal of the Dax House program is to set these students up for success, while also preparing them for their future post-graduation.
To participate in the program, students must follow specific criteria, which includes adhering to Dax House guidelines and having enrollment in good standing at the Mount. Housing is offered to students year-round and continues for three months
after graduation to give recent graduates time to secure permanent jobs and find stable housing.
What if a graduate does not find secure housing in the three months following graduation? Well, Dax House and the University will continue to work with them on a case-by-case basis until they do.
“The reality is that there are a lot of college students who are able to attend college with Pell Grants, loans, financial aid, and academic scholarships, but none of that provides them with the ability to live,” Matthew continued. “Dax House enables these driven students to have a place to live while getting their education, while also saving money.”
The opening of Dax House—which was officially celebrated with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on August 13—has given the Mount the opportunity to give young women the ability to complete their degree in an environment that supports their studies and launch careers that will provide them and their families with the economic and social mobility only a postsecondary degree can offer. Gabrielle Occhiogrosso, EdD, Dean of the Undergraduate College, will oversee Dax House placement for Mount students.
“Housing insecurity for our Mount students takes many forms,” shared President Susan R. Burns. “For some, it might mean sleeping in a car or a shelter. For others, it might mean a onebedroom apartment that is shared by six, ten, or even twelve family members. But no matter the specific situation, any student facing housing
insecurity shares in the same struggle: an environment that is not conducive to studying and success within and beyond the classroom.”
In 1998, the SCHDC was established in support of the Sisters’ mission to help provide housing for those in need. Dax House at Rosary Hall provides students with just that—along with various services that support a successful path toward the continuation and completion of their degree, including textbook assistance and counseling referrals. The University of Mount Saint Vincent aspires to sustain and expand this program to cater to the needs of both current and potential male students in the future.
“The Sisters of Charity have always responded to the needs in front of them,” added Matthew. “There was a need for education, so they opened schools. There was a need for healthcare, so they opened hospitals. There was a need for orphanages, so they opened orphanages. The easiest way to be homeless in New York City is to have been homeless once. So, we created a place where these students can live, be supported, finish their education, graduate, and move on.”
Aside from living and attending classes at the Mount, students in Dax House have also been welcomed into a family of their own, in a place where they can feel at home. Several Sisters of Charity live on the second floor of Rosary Hall, and they have graciously opened the first floor of their home to the needs of these driven young women.
“The Sisters are sharing their home, but they’re also sharing much more than that,” said Samantha Walker, Chief Program Officer for the SCHDC. “They’re lending a helping hand and supporting them so when they’re ready to be on their own, they have the foundation needed to succeed.”
Celebrating the potential of every person in this way is integral to the mission and values of all organizations involved: Depaul USA, the Sisters of Charity, and the University of Mount Saint Vincent. The University is forever indebted to the courage and spirit of the Sisters and is committed to carrying out their legacy through our partnerships and shared ministries in the decades to come.
All Ways Forward SPEAKER SERIES
On Monday, August 26, the University of Mount Saint Vincent held its first installment of the All Ways Forward Speaker Series at beautiful Civic Hall in Union Square. The All Ways Forward Speaker Series is an new initiative at the University aimed at bringing leaders in business, government, politics, and more into the ever-active Mount community to educate and share the ways in which they are moving themselves and their personal and professional stories forward.
The August 26 event was hosted by Andrew Rasiej, Civic Hall Founder and NY Tech Alliance Chairman, and Rob Walsh, President of the Bronx Economic Development Corporation.
Our featured speaker was Francis S. Barry, author of Back Roads and Better Angels, New York Times number one best-selling biographer, and Bloomberg Opinion columnist. The event included an engaging conversation between Frank and University President Susan R. Burns, a reception, and a book-signing for all in attendance.
At the University of Mount Saint Vincent, we are always moving forward. We continue to find shared success in our programs and partnerships, and we are eager to share more details about future events in the All Ways Forward Speaker Series soon!

ALWAYS LEARNING: Transforming the Education of Health Professionals
Exciting developments in the University of Mount Saint Vincent’s premier health professions programs are competing for attention this year—but no single one is more deserving of that attention over the other. As the BS in Nursing Program prepares for the 50th anniversary of its founding, this hallmark of nursing education in New York City is witnessing a decades-high pass rate among students taking the NCLEX licensure exam. And, continuing to gain recognition in the region just two years after its launch, the MS in Physician Assistant Program will soon graduate its first cohort. Below, we encourage you to read more about the vitality and impact of these two thriving health professions programs and the ways they continue to move their students forward to life-long careers in service to others.
Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing Reaches a Milestone
Catherine Healy-Sharbaugh, DNP, FNP, GNP-BC, is a no-nonsense nurse leader. Hired as a faculty member in 2021, but promoted in 2023 after a national search to serve as the Mount’s Dean of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer, her first order of business was to address the quality of the Nursing Program. She set her sights on improving sagging pass rates on the NCLEX—the National Council Licensure Examination required of all nursing graduates seeking licensing as a registered nurse.
Since 1982, NCLEX pass rates have served as a benchmark to indicate a nursing program’s quality and success. Nursing schools and programs across the United States and Canada aim for a pass rate of 95% or higher, which
ensures graduates are fully trained in all aspects of nursing care.
“Until recently, the University’s Nursing Program’s pass rate hovered around 75 percent,” said Dr. Healy-Sharbaugh. “We had our work cut out for us.”
Established in 1975, the Mount’s Nursing Program has a rich history of producing highly skilled nurses and nurse leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to nursing care. Prior to the Program’s founding, Mount Saint Vincent offered nursing education in partnership with the Sisters of Charity of New York through St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan. By founding its own program, the Mount quickly emerged as one of the top institutions for nursing education not only in New York City, but in the northeast region.
But in the past decade, numerous factors contributed to a decline in the program’s NCLEX pass rates.
“Many of the nursing faculty, though dedicated and well educated, had not been encouraged to change their teaching style to fit the times,” Dr. Healy-Sharbaugh explained.
When the pandemic and other factors forced a shift to online learning, there was no clear plan for educating nurses without relying solely on hands-on teaching. So, step by step, Dr. HealySharbaugh—in her new role as Dean— addressed deficiencies, incorporating faculty development, self-assessment, and team-building practices, along with proper emphasis on digital resources and simulation labs.
“We began problem-solving together, tapping each person’s strengths. That made a difference right away.”
By January 2024, the University of Mount Saint Vincent’s NCLEX pass rate had climbed to 90% and, by this past Summer, it had hit an astounding and impressive 100%.
“Our students and faculty are very proud of their achievement,” said Dr. HealySharbaugh. “I feel confident that we are starting a new chapter of excellence, which will continue our upward trajectory as we monitor our progress.”
And the success, of course, does not lie solely in NCLEX pass rates. The Nursing Program only continues to grow and expand. Last Fall, the University formalized its longstanding partnership with Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, a fellow Sisters of Charity of New York sponsored ministry. Supported by a $2.5 million donation from the hospital, the newly named Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing has enabled the University to partner with the medical center to develop research and clinical opportunities, scholarships, jobs, loan repayment programs, and faculty support—among other benefits.
Finally, a recent unrestricted $1 million gift to the University was earmarked for repairs and renovations to nursing labs and classroom spaces in Founders Hall. While improvements are modest in scope, they will have a deeper impact.
“Revitalizing Founders Hall with much-needed improvements will not only stimulate pride of place among the nursing faculty and students, but it will also send a message that they are respected and valued,” Dr. HealySharbaugh said.
As to the upcoming 50th anniversary, “Of course we plan to celebrate this milestone,” Dr. Healy-Sharbaugh shared.
“More importantly, we will be tapping the collective wisdom of our alumnae/i. We want them to come to campus, to witness the difference we’ve made, and to engage in conversations with us about the future of nursing. Ultimately, I want our nursing students to succeed so they can stand beside me as we change lives.”
Physician Assistant Program Graduates its Inaugural Cohort
The field of physician assistant is having a moment, so to speak. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the need for qualified physician assistants will grow by more than 30 percent within the next five years—significantly faster than the average for all occupations within the United States.
As the first registered Master of Science Physician Assistant (PA) Program in the Bronx, the University’s PA program is already achieving success and prominence. Designed to create a tangible pathway to support key areas of need, the program produces skilled professionals who will deliver quality medical care across a culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient population.
Associate Professor Anthony J. Garofalo, DPM, PA-C, FABPM, is the Founding Director and Chair of the Physician Assistant Program at the Mount.
“We’re both excited and proud to be graduating our first cohort at the end of this calendar year, and we’re pleased at how well they’ve performed,” Dr. Garofalo shared. “At Summer’s end, we were seeing students performing at a high academic and clinical level, and have the utmost confidence that our PA National Certification Examination pass rate will be well above the national projected average of 94%.”
What’s more, students have landed placements at several well-regarded hospitals in the region, including Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Garofalo describes this as “a coup for any program, especially one that’s just starting out.” With nearly 50 practice sites secured in highly desirable fields such as pediatrics and family practice, the University’s PA Program is positioned for even greater success in the coming years.
The demand for PAs translates to more jobs, higher pay, and greater career stability for the upcoming graduates of the Mount Saint Vincent PA Program. But it also means more competition for spots in each cohort, now capped at 55.
“In our first year, we had 500 applicants,” said Dr. Garofalo. “That number has tripled and quadrupled in successive years, and applications are already coming in for places in the Class of 2028.”
Dr. Garofalo, who maintains his clinical position as Chief Physician Assistant for the New York City Police Department, pointed out that all PA faculty members hold professional clinical roles in the community in addition to their teaching responsibilities. With such seasoned faculty serving as mentors, the focus is to help graduates develop both the confidence and competence they will need in high-pressure situations.
“We don’t just teach them what they need to score well on qualifying exams,” explained Dr. Garofalo. “We prepare graduates to be well-rounded, mature, and to be able to handle whatever is thrown at them.”
Dr. Garofalo said the Mount’s focus on training leaders, not just practitioners, is of greater importance and has a more far-reaching impact than the growing popularity of the profession.
“Serving as a PA, and working within the community, is an excellent career. The PA Program at the Mount is also focused on building future leaders within the PA profession. These future leaders will put the Mount at the forefront of PA education while expanding the overall professional growth of the profession. When our students excel, they are role models for younger students. The combination of clinical excellence and professional leadership will further cement their place within the medical establishment and open doors to advancement within the various branches of the medical communities of which they serve.”

SISTERS of Charity
IN 1847, THE SISTERS OF CHARITY OF NEW YORK founded the University of Mount Saint Vincent to provide excellent liberal arts education in the Catholic tradition, preparing students for lives of professional accomplishment and service. With great pride, we strive to fulfill this mission. In the tradition of the Sisters of Charity, we ask everyone who works at the Mount to be committed to this fundamental purpose: to educate the whole person, to take part in a lively conversation with religious faith, and to engender a dedication to service.
Listed here are Sisters who, during the past year, have lent their talent, wisdom, and spirit in a variety of capacities to work on behalf of the Mount. With immense gratitude, we acknowledge and celebrate their leadership, dedication, and commitment to the University of Mount Saint Vincent.

ALWAYS SCORING: A New Generation for UMSV Dolphins
The rebrand from College to the University of Mount Saint Vincent has benefitted the entire campus community—and that, of course, includes the UMSV Department of Athletics and Recreation.
With our overarching new look and feel came a much-needed upgrade to the athletic logo, which had not received a facelift since it was first introduced in January 2005. The all-new look has been widely praised by studentathletes, members of the administration, faculty, and alums due to the versatility of the new Vinny and the hidden dolphin monogram within the new UMSV Athletics wordmark. The color change from lighter shades of gold and teal to a more bold choice of deep gold and navy was also widely welcomed, and is now completely aligned with the University’s overarching brand standards.
But, wait: there’s more!
Not only did the Department of Athletics and Recreation receive a branding makeover this past Summer, the University’s Board of Trustees executed the decision to expand the department back in March—with both esports and tennis receiving Board approval as fulltime athletic programs.
Esports was launched this Fall, while tennis will begin competition in the 2025-2026 academic year. Both additions were directly aligned with Goal 1, Objective 6 of our 2022-2025 Strategic Plan.
Esports has taken the collegiate world by storm and is considered, arguably, the fastest growing sport across the nation. The UMSV esports team—which is co-ed and competing as a member of the East Coast Conference—houses their custom-built arena on the first floor of Founders Hall, with a plan to expand the competition
and training location across the hallway. The esports program at the Mount will complement our existing minor in sports management, as well as our joint degree program in sport management with St. John’s University, filling a demand for industry professionals with an understanding of the nuances of not only esports, but virtual gaming at large.
Tennis, which will make a triumphant return to Riverdale after a near 15-year hiatus, will be the University’s fifteenth and sixteenth athletic programs, with men and women participating in separate competitions. Athletic Director Phil Stern, along with colleagues in the Facilities and Operations Division, have already begun conversations with local courts to house the program’s return season. The long-term goal remains for courts to be built on campus, hopefully included in the soon-to-be revised Strategic Plan.
Mount Saint Vincent hopes a combined 20 new student-athletes will join the UMSV community with the addition of three new sports—but with that comes the need for further fundraising opportunities to ensure all Mount student-athletes have the best experience possible both within and beyond the classroom.
For the past four years, the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s staple fundraiser has been its Golf Outing. While it has been remarkably successful as a standalone event, the Department prides itself in collaboration across campus and, in 2025, it will join forces with the Sisters of Charity to expand the day of festivities, with proceeds also benefiting Vincent’s Table.
The fifth annual Golf Outing will take place this June—stay tuned for more info to come—and we hope we can count on you for your continued support of the UMSV Dolphins.
Pictured on the center of the page are our two 2023-2024 Skyline Conference Championship teams: WOMEN'S SOCCER and WOMEN'S BASKETBALL!

Accessing Founders Hall is now easier and more appealing than ever before. This past Summer, Founders Road was completely stripped, leveled, rebuilt, and repaved—which not only improved deteriorating roadway conditions, but also created additional ADA parking spots, designated pick-up/drop-off areas, and enhanced fire lanes for emergency access.
And, of course, the benefits are not limited to drivers. The project also enabled the construction of new walkways and an improved access ramp for those with limited mobility, as well terracing and landscaping of the adjacent hill connecting the building to the Great Lawn (designed by the Mount’s very own Assistant Director for Facilities, Michael Gallucci) to improve rainwater runoff conditions.
The $1.3 million dollar project was a long time coming—after several water main breaks, winter salting, and erosion deteriorated the pavement.
“This project was essential to maintaining the utility of our campus and the welfare of our students, employees, and visitors” said Vice President for Operations Kevin DeGroat. “As a result of thoughtful planning and partnership with the Sisters of Charity of New York, we were also able to enhance the beauty of our extraordinary campus and the connection between Founders Hall—the center of our community—and the Great Lawn, which remains the site of some of our most meaningful celebrations.”

GRANTS & CONTRACTS
During Fiscal Year 2024, the University of Mount Saint Vincent secured $12,511,994 in new grant funds from government agencies and foundations. These awards provide targeted support for initiatives and institutional priorities aligned with the 2022-2025 Strategic Plan. Specifically, the grants won in 2024 have both ensured the successful launch of Seton College and will ensure the Mount’s abiding commitment to authentic access to education through a five-year renewal of our Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program.
“The University continues to win the support and partnership of external funders due to the quality of our academic and student life programs and the unique role this institution fills in the landscape of higher education,” said Madeleine Melkonian, Senior Vice President for Advancement and External Relations. “Few institutions of higher learning can claim to be as impactful as the Mount. We serve students of all backgrounds and give each one equal opportunity to realize their talents. Funders recognize that an investment in the Mount is an investment in our learners, as well as in stronger, more engaging communities.”
All grant and foundational support has lasting effects across campus, but, particularly, funding secured by the University enhances our programmatic offerings that make earning a degree possible for students who otherwise could not afford high quality higher education.
“Unsurprisingly, we think the Mount deserves to win every grant, but we appreciate how competitive the landscape is for these awards,” reflected Daniel Regan, Associate Vice President for External Relations. “Securing these funds requires the commitment of many determined individuals—from engaging with our elected officials to ensure the continuation of federal funds for programs like Title V and TRiO/SSS and HECap and HEOP on the state level, to developing and writing proposals. We are fortunate our faculty and administrators understand this work to be essential to their efforts on campus each day.”
The work never ends—we’re always moving forward in effort to set our students down the right path toward success.
FOUNDATION AWARDS
In February 2024, The Carson Family Charitable Trust awarded $1,025,000 to the University to support the establishment of Seton College. A portion of the funds enabled the creation of the Seton College student lounge, the Carson Commons. The Carson family’s philanthropy will also enhance Seton College’s career education and development activities.
Mount Saint Vincent received $539,000 in start-up funds for Seton College from the Come To Believe Network, which pioneered the model on which Seton College is based. The funds enabled the onboarding of personnel essential to the development of the curriculum and recruitment of the first cohort of students.
The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation approved a grant of $300,001 for Seton College. The Foundation’s support, which will be spread over two years, will enable the University to maintain a network of integrated student support services that promote academic achievement, personal development, and wellness.
Gerstner Philanthropies made a grant of $175,000 to support the first year of operation of Seton College. The award will promote food security by underwriting breakfast and lunch for Seton College students. A portion of the award will be reserved to provide resources that address student emergency needs.
The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities made an award of $15,000. The grant, made in memory of Yvonne Raskob, supported scholarships for nursing students.
The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust made two gifts to the Mount in Fiscal Year 2024, $16,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students for the 2023-2024 academic year, and $15,124 for the 2024-2025 academic year.
GOVERNMENT AWARDS
The New York State Education Department approved a new award in January 2024, which will provide up to $9,900,000 to the University of Mount Saint Vincent to extend its Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) through the 2028-2029 academic year. HEOP is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but—due to limited academic and financial resources—would not otherwise have the opportunity pursue post-secondary education. The current HEOP program has been in place at the Mount since the 2014-2015 academic year.
In June 2024, Mount Saint Vincent was awarded a $1,000,000 New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant. The Mount will utilize the funds to furnish and equip new classrooms and offices for Seton College on the fifth of Founders Hall, as well as the ground floor of the Elizabeth Seton Library. The grant will also enable necessary window and elevator enhancements.
2023-2024 was the second year of Mount Saint Vincent’s participation in the Intelligence Community Centers for Academic Excellence, a four-year project funded by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Funded through a sub-award from the University of New Hampshire, Omar
Nagi, PhD, Associate Professor of Sociology, is leading the development of coursework and research projects that will cultivate the content knowledge and analytic reasoning skills necessary to equip students for careers in national security and intelligence gathering. The Mount will receive over $110,000 over the project period.
The Mount continued to benefit from a Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Providing more than $2.3 million over the five-year grant period, the grant will advance targeted initiatives designed to improve student success. Second-year funding in 2023-2024 exceeded $596,000.
Academic year 2023-2024 was the fourth year of a five-year SSS TRiO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Mount received $331,000 in the year to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students. The University will receive $1.6 million in funding over the course of the grant period, which runs through August 2025.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) awarded Mount Saint Vincent a third campus grant in September 2022, in recognition of its efforts to create and maintain a safe and healthy campus community by implementing systems and educational activities that reduce sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. The grant project will run through 2025 and provide $269,000.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING
Generations of donors contribute annually to keep the University of Mount Saint Vincent strong, and their dedicated support allows the Mount to continue its mission for future students as well. There are many opportunities for giving to the Mount and gifts can take several forms. Most contributions also provide the donor with an income tax deduction for the year of the gift. Please carefully consider the many options available for your future giving.
ANNUAL FUND
An Annual Fund gift is an opportunity to provide an unrestricted contribution to the Mount. The Annual Fund supports all areas of the University, including financial aid, faculty development, buildings and grounds maintenance, student activities, and upgraded technology programs.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships give talented and deserving students the opportunity to afford a Mount education. Gifts can be made to a specific scholarship fund or to the Scholarship Tribute Dinner to benefit all scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named and will support future generations of students.
WAYS TO GIVE
CASH
Gifts of cash immediately benefit the Mount. Checks, cash, and contributions made through a donor’s Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit or debit card are gratefully accepted.
SECURITIES
Like cash contributions, a gift of securities entitles the donor to an income tax deduction in the year it is given. The most convenient way to give a gift of securities is to arrange a transfer by a broker to the Mount’s account.
To make a gift of securities, contact the Mount’s broker:

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS
Many businesses have matching gift programs, which can double or even triple a gift to the Mount. They are easy to arrange and are of no cost to the donor. Please contact your employer’s human resources office for more information about matching gifts.
PLANNED GIFTS
Planned gifts are popular and creative ways to support the Mount and can allow you to receive significant financial benefits during your lifetime.
You may include the Mount in your will by designating a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to the institution.
CAPITAL GIFTS
Capital gifts are designated by the donor to fund the Mount’s capital needs, such as construction and renovation projects.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
• Any gift can be made in honor of or in memory of someone special.
• In order to receive a charitable income tax deduction for this calendar year, gifts must be postmarked by December 31. All credit card gifts must be processed by December 31 as well.
• The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers age 70 or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, including colleges, universities, and independent schools. To make a gift via the IRA Charitable Rollover, please contact your IRA plan administrator.
• Gifts can be made online at umsv.edu/giving
