PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH A PARTICIPATORY NATIONAL SEARCH PROCESS will be utilized to identify the next president of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. A committee of trustees, most of whom are alums, as well as faculty and student representatives has been assembled. The committee will announce the time frame and guidelines for the search shortly. Below is a reprint of Steven M. Hayes’ August 21, 2019 letter to the College community announcing Charles L. Flynn, Jr.’s retirement.

Dear Members of the Mount Community: 2019-2020 will be the 20th year of Charles L. Flynn, Jr.’s tenure as President of the College. He has informed the Board of Trustees that he intends it to be the last. We are grateful for his leadership and all that the College has accomplished during his tenure. Dr. Flynn’s presidency has been a period of extraordinary growth in the face of an increasingly challenging environment, bringing to the College increased enrollment, new programs, reconstructed and new facilities, and national recognition for the accomplishments of faculty and students. During his tenure, fundraising has reached record highs, the College has begun to build a credible endowment, and its financial foundation has been secured. However, Dr. Flynn’s vision and faithful leadership is better illustrated by the fact that the College’s growth has been mission-centered. The College continues to be deeply committed to the liberal arts and to its core values: “an understanding of our common humanity, a commitment to human dignity, and a full appreciation of our obligations to each other.” Over the past twenty years, undergraduate enrollment has more than doubled. The College has restored and added vibrant academic programs: most recently Data Analytics, Theatre, Interdisciplinary Studies in such tracks as Law and Justice and Social Services, and clinically rich dual certification Master of Science programs in childhood/ special education; adolescent/special education, and TESOL. The College has comprehensively rebuilt (and added to) its science laboratories, its communication and art studios, its computer laboratories, its residence halls, its athletic center and athletic fields, its campus roadways, and (forever a challenge) parking. Another new dual-purpose building is under construction to house both upper class students and 19,000 square feet of nursing simulation laboratories. It has added the largest solar array in New York City and, with LED lighting and other efficiencies, now generates nearly half of the electricity used on campus. It will soon announce several dramatic new initiatives underway this year. For all its programmatic progress, the College is most proud to have earned national recognition for its leadership in expanding access to authentically high-quality educational opportunity for talented students of every economic and social background. Dr. Flynn explains, “our graduates achieve extraordinary success because of their talent and ambition and because the College is deeply committed to the liberal arts. The liberal arts may be counter-intuitive, but they continue to be the best preparation for a life of accomplishment and service. Data confirms: we prepare students for extraordinary careers, not glass-ceiling jobs.” When thanked for his service, Dr. Flynn, as usual, turned the conversation to Mount Saint Vincent students and faculty. “They are the point,” he said. The Trustees will soon announce a search committee and a national search process. The input of alumni, faculty, staff, and students will be critical. Details about the search will be forthcoming. Sincerely,

Steven M. Hayes Chair of the Board of Trustees

TWENTY YEARS of Mission-Centered Leadership continued from page 4

ENROLLMENT The College of Mount Saint Vincent has grown, incrementally and strategically. The full-time population of the Undergraduate College is now 1,568 students, nearly 170 percent of its size in 2000. In addition, the College serves over 400 second degree students through its graduate and post-baccalaureate programs. The College has maintained its commitment to serving talented individuals from New York City, while steadily broadening its geographic reach so that out-of-state students routinely comprise 20 percent of the 450 to 500 first-year students that enroll each year. Equally vital, the College remains an essential opportunity creator for students from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds. As one of the most diverse colleges in the country, nearly half of all Mount Saint Vincent undergraduates are among the first generation of their families to pursue higher education. Additionally, many have significant financial need, and the College continues to provide significant financial assistance. ACADEMICS A new Core Curriculum has been implemented, which emphasizes critical thinking and active inquiry, while providing a broad foundation of knowledge. The 49-credit

Georgette Newman Conroy ’74 Margaret Cook-Bronner ’84 and James Bonner

Core Curriculum extends over four years and reflects the College’s commitment to an authentic liberal arts education. Students complete classes in a broad range of disciplines—literature, languages, art, music, history, philosophy, religion, mathematics, as well as the natural and social sciences—to develop a solid foundation of knowledge, an appreciation of moral and ethical values, and essential skills such as critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, and effective communication. Additionally, the curriculum for the Honors Program has been redesigned in order to better challenge students to do their best work and to cross intellectual and disciplinary boundaries through unique core courses while pursuing any major at the College. Vibrant academic programs have been added or restored in: Accounting, Public Policy, Data Analytics, Theatre, Fine Arts, and Visual Arts and Experimental Media. Additionally, new tracks, including Law and Justice and Social Services have been launched within the Interdisciplinary Studies major. Postbaccalaureate and graduate opportunities have also been expanded—launching a highly-enrolled Accelerated Nursing program, a Master of Business Administration degree program, and clinically rich dual certification Master of Science programs in childhood/ special education; adolescent/special education, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Additional graduate programs are in development. In June 2019, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of the School of Nursing and Health Professions.

Leveraging the College’s strengths, including robust undergraduate nursing and natural science programs, the School will offer degrees and certificates that prepare the next generation of health care providers and leaders. Work has begun to obtain approval and accreditation for a Master of Science in Physician Assistant studies. Upon its launch—anticipated for the Spring 2022 semester—the program will be the only one registered in the Bronx and will offer students clinical training at New York’s most renowned health care institutions, including New York-Presbyterian Hospitals and the Hebrew Home at Riverdale by RiverSpring Health. A Master of Science in Art Therapy and Counseling has been established and is awaiting final approvals. The School will also offer a range of Nurse Practitioner (NP) specializations, expanding from the Family Nurse Practitioner program currently offered. Adult Gerontological and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner curriculums will be the first additions and will be offered as specializations within the Master of Science in Nursing degree or as post-master’s advanced certificates. The NP curriculums, along with Accelerated Nursing—which was established in 2014 to allow individuals who previously completed a bachelor’s degree to transition to a career in nursing—will be offered on the Riverdale campus, as well as a new location in Long Island City, Queens to facilitate access and opportunity from any part of New York City. The College’s Queens location will open in 2020. Continued on page 23

For many Mount students, the residence halls are more than dorms—they are home. With that, significant improvements have been completed to all living spaces, enhancing our residence halls as revitalized learning communities. We’ve also increased our capacity, most notably through the addition of Mastronardi Hall in 2007, to serve a growing population—nearly 900 students currently reside on campus. Additionally, the opening of Aquino Hall in 2020 will bring the number of residential students to over 1,000.

With the flourishing number of students on campus, it was essential to update and refurbish the main dining space in Spellman Hall. Hudson Heights was completed in 2012, giving students access to a greater variety of healthy, sustainable menus prepared by the College’s culinary team. Diners now have an expanded array of stations—from pizza, salads, and sandwiches to sushi, Starbucks, and eco-friendly plant-based options, Hudson Heights supports a diverse community and promotes student wellness.

And with over 40 clubs and organizations, students are always getting involved. Whatever their interests—journalism, creative writing, acting, art, dance, cultural awareness, athletics, business, community service, environmentalism—students are always exploring the various opportunities available to them outside the classroom.

In 2014, the campus’ first NCAA regulation athletic field was completed. Situated on the banks of the Hudson River, Marillac Field offers breathtaking views of Manhattan and the Palisades, providing an unrivaled setting for competition. And in an effort to give more athletic teams home field advantage, the College partnered with the City of Yonkers to purchase and completely overhaul the softball and baseball diamonds at Fay Field. Adjacent to campus, Fay Field is expected to open for the upcoming spring season.

Service is not extracurricular activity at the Mount—it’s an essential component of the College’s mission. Students complete over 10,000 hours of service annually and have been recognized as one of the leading providers of volunteer service by the NYC Mayor’s Office. That effort has been expanded in part by the Seton Service and Leadership Program, which provides full room and board scholarships to students with high academic profiles who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community service. Recipients further that commitment at the Mount by coordinating service projects and reflection opportunities. Created through the sponsorship of the Sisters of Charity, the College is now building a permanent endowment to support the program.

EDUCATING THE WHOLE PERSON City culture is deeply integrated into life on campus. Our inclusive community and proximity to Manhattan are all part of a Mount education. Students are just minutes away from museums, theaters, restaurants, the Empire State Building, the United Nations, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, the Met, Wall Street, and much more. And with access to the best internships and job placements throughout NYC, it’s no surprise Mount students thrive in this globally influential, cultural, and economic capital—it’s where they learn and explore.

TWENTY YEARS of Mission-Centered Leadership continued from page 7

The College’s programs are exceptional in large part to a remarkably talented and uniquely devoted faculty. The exchange of ideas and information between students and faculty is at the core of the College. While significantly increasing enrollment, the College has preserved the personal, close-knit relationships between students and faculty. The full-time faculty has increased accordingly to maintain a student to faculty ratio of 13:1, with an average class size of under 20 students. As New York Times columnist Frank Bruni observed when visiting campus, our faculty “really know” our students and are determined to “guide them to the professional lives that they [crave].” Recruiting and retaining exemplary faculty is essential. The College has worked to raise salaries above the 70th percentile nationally and has continued to hire exceptionally well. Additionally, improved opportunities have been created to support faculty engagement in scholarship that enriches the academic programs of the College, including increasing the number of sabbaticals awarded from one to five a year and increasing funding for faculty who present original work at national conferences. Mount Saint Vincent’s first three endowed professorships—the Jean Ames DeNunzio Chair for Faculty Excellence, the Sisters of Charity 200th Anniversary Chair, and the Ad Lux Chair—also support the retention of exceptional faculty. In announcing the professorships in 2017, Dr. Flynn said: “Endowments allow the College to recognize exemplary scholarship and unparalleled dedication. Equally significant is the effect these endowments will have on faculty compensation across the board. By raising the standard, we are shining a spotlight on the Mount’s exceptional record of teacher excellence.” The last two decades have been revolutionary in terms of learning technologies and the College has strived to keep pace, extensively improving information technology systems. The College has created 15 computer laboratories across the campus—including those in the Stephen J. Maloney Center on the ground floor of the Elizabeth Seton Library, specialized labs supporting our arts and communication programs, and the Business Trading and Research Center in Founders Hall. Collectively, more than 300 public access machines are available. Additionally, smart classrooms dominate the College’s instructional spaces and our library collection is mostly electronic, making essential resources available to students 24 hours a day. Academic programs have also been enriched by new and revitalized instructional spaces. Maryvale Hall was remodeled and expanded in 2005 to house what is now known as the Division of Communication, Art, and Media. Both the exterior and interior of the building were renovated to include smart-equipped classrooms and art spaces, offices for professors, and cutting-edge television, radio, and editing media studios. An extension was completed in 2013 to include a new ceramics studio. Later in 2017, in response to the growing demand for courses in the fine arts, the College transformed space in Rosary Hall to house printmaking and sculpting studios. The announcement of a re-launched Fine Arts major called upon Mount Saint Vincent to integrate its academic resources on campus with the cultural opportunities of New York City. And with the rise of social media and other networking platforms, there was an indisputable need for newly-designed creative spaces for broadcasting and media development, with those studios being renovated in 2018. In one of the most ambitious projects in College history, the Science Hall has been completely modernized through four phases of renovation. As careers in STEM fields skyrocketed over the past decade, Mount Saint Vincent knew that updating its natural science facilities was essential. In order to respond to the growing curiosity of students in science, renovations to the Science Hall created 10 state-of-the-art laboratories for students and faculty in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry, providing

the space and safety that is essential for student and faculty research, as well as scientific experimentation. The laboratories allow students to apply theory and method, while developing expertise with advanced technologies they will utilize through their careers. The $11 million project also updated classroom spaces and expanded study areas for students, renovated bathrooms, and provided cosmetic upgrades, including new ceilings, windows, doors, and a new climate control system. Aquino Hall, currently under construction with a planned opening in August 2020, will house 19,144-square-feet of new technologically advanced nursing simulation laboratories. The new facility will support the latest and best practices for training nursing professionals. Employing instructional technologies—including patient simulators, live-action simulation, and observation areas—the laboratories will allow students to master the essential skills for several nursing specializations: clinical assessment, adult/primary care, pediatric, maternity, and community health nursing. The top three stories of Aquino Hall will provide suite-style housing for Mount juniors and seniors. The work students and faculty engage in is complemented by a diversified collection of co-curricular programs. The Oxley Center for Academic Advisement and Career Education has transformed career development from an office that students are encouraged to seek out, to an integral part of their experience, allowing students to explore passions, search for opportunities in and outside the classroom, and refine skills over the course of their four-year program. The Center for Undergraduate Research sponsors and assists students developing original research and scholarship across the College. The Center is interdisciplinary and students learn qualitative and scientific methods along the entire spectrum, from conception to measurement to analysis. Their work is driven by their own ideas and passions and held up for public inspection. The culmination of these factors is impressive and the College is recognized nationally as a leader for it. A 2017 study ranked us third in the nation in social mobility among 578 selective public and private colleges and universities. The ranking confirms that the College opens worlds of high-quality opportunity to students without regard to family means. It also celebrates our students and the accomplishments of our alumnae/i.

Construction of Aquino Hall—named in honor of one of the Mount’s most illustrious and influential alumnae, Corazon C. Aquino ’53—is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2020-2021 academic year. The finished building will be dual purpose: the top three floors will provide housing for over 120 students and the lower two floors will house more than 19,000-square-feet of nursing simulation laboratories, supporting the latest and best practices for training nursing professionals.

SUSTAINING THE MISSION THE VALUE OF THE COLLEGE’S ASSETS HAS INCREASED from $25.2 million in 2000 to $98.8 million in 2018, strengthening the infrastructure and resources Mount Saint Vincent requires to sustain its work. Preserving our beautiful, landmarked campus has been an essential part of this effort. Years of deferred maintenance costs have been addressed, with millions of dollars’ worth of improvements to roads, sidewalks, retaining walls, drainage, campus lighting, and HVAC systems. Additionally, work has been completed to equip our historic Founders Hall to serve a growing student population. Space planning has allowed the building to be better utilized—instructional spaces fill the center section of the building with the offices moved to the north and south wings. Many upgrades were completed on the first floor, including the renovation of conference rooms, the redesign of Benedict's Hall into a programmable space, and the transformation of “Mag’s Kitchen” into a grab-andgo style food service location. New paint and flooring refreshed classrooms and administrative spaces, and outdated plumbing and heating systems were replaced. The renovation of Founders Hall is most recently evident in the Business Trading and Research Center, nursing laboratory suites, the creation of the Fishlinger Center for Public Policy Research, and the refurbishment of the Chapel of the

Immaculate Conception—a project completed through the joint efforts of both Mount Saint Vincent and the Sisters of Charity of New York. Maintenance and construction of new campus facilities has not been the only efficiency upgrade at Mount Saint Vincent over the past 20 years. Sustainability measures on campus have helped reduce the College’s carbon footprint and subsidize energy costs. In 2016, the College installed 1,400 solar panels in Villa Parking Lot, and prior to the introduction of solar power to the campus, most of the College’s major buildings completed oil-to-gas conversions. The new solar farm over Villa Parking Lot has reduced energy costs by 10 percent per year. Additionally, through an environmentally conscious approach, lighting in most campus buildings and outdoor lamps were switched to LED lighting, increasing the lifespan of a single bulb by over 50,000 hours. These upgrades earned Mount Saint Vincent recognition as a leader in green initiatives—a reputation that will be further enhanced through a new campus-wide effort. The project will lower the College’s carbon footprint and generate up to $85,000 in savings, rebates, and incentives per year for the next 15 years—yielding over $1 million in capital funding to be reinvested in further campus improvements. The plan will facilitate the installation of air conditioning in the Elizabeth Seton Library and the Science

Hall, upgrades to the heating and ventilation systems in Mastronardi Hall, and the placement of solar panels on the roof of the Elizabeth Seton Library. The centerpiece of the new energyefficient initiative is a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system, also known as a cogeneration energy generator. Cogeneration merges the production of usable heat and electricity into a single process that can substantially reduce carbon emissions while lowering energy costs by improving efficiency and reducing waste. “The cogeneration unit burns natural gas, and the byproducts create both cooling and supplementary heating for the library and science buildings,” said Kevin DeGroat, Vice President for Operations. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a typical combustion system operates at about 40-50 percent efficiency, while cogeneration systems can be up to 80 percent efficient. It reduces carbon emissions, greenhouse gases, and other air pollutants, thus contributing to sustainability goals. And since CHP is an on-site resource, it can support continued operations during a power disruption. Gains extend well beyond the physical plant. The College’s financial foundation has been secured, and it has begun to build a credible endowment, currently valued in excess of $25 million, which will help the College maintain quality resources while maintaining

Rededicated in 2011 as the Centennial Steps, the staircase connecting the Great Lawn and Founders Hall was among the many infrastructure projects completed on campus. affordability and financial aid for students. This is a significant achievement. The generosity of alumnae/i and friends enabled two successful capital campaigns, Building Our Future, which exceeded its goal by 40 percent, and the in-progress Ad Lux, which will close in excess of its $42 million goal. In addition to support of strategic initiatives, alumnae/i and friends continue to provide essential support for the College’s mission. Alumnae/i participation in giving continues to outpace the national average and the 2018-2019 Annual Fund set a new record, raising over $1.1 million—an increase of nearly 75 percent since 2000.

GRANTS AND CONTRACTS FOUNDATION AWARDS The Hearst Foundation awarded the College $125,000 in March 2019 to support the creation of the new nursing simulation laboratories that are being constructed as part of Aquino Hall The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities made a new award of $15,000. The grant, made in memory of Yvonne Raskob, supported scholarships for nursing students. The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust awarded the College $15,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students. The Sterling National Bank Foundation awarded $8,000 to the College in support of the Mott Street Scholarship Program. GOVERNMENT AWARDS In October 2018, the College began a five-year National Science Foundation Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Students. The project, led by Pamela Kerrigan, Ph.D., Director of Natural Sciences and Associate Professor of Chemistry, will provide scholarships and enrichment activities for 22 students pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. The grant will provide $959,955 over five years. The Fall 2018 semester began the final year of a five-year Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions grant totaling up to $2.3 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant assists institutions serving a high proportion of Hispanic students by developing and increasing their academic offerings. Title V grant funds continue to enhance the College’s Academic Resource Center, the Mount Access Program, and the Oxley Center for Academic Advisement and Career Education. The Fall 2018 semester brought the fourth year of a U.S. Department of Education grant, totaling $1.2 million, to continue operating the SSS TRIO program at the College through 2020. The College received $320,000 in the year to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students.

The 2018-2019 fiscal year was the final year of the College’s initial five-year award to operate a New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The program is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate promising students who will succeed at the college level and beyond. The grant provided more than $3 million in support during the five-year period. In June 2019, the College received notification of a renewal award to continue HEOP through 2024. The renewal will provide $6,750,000 over the contract period. In October 2018, the College began the third and final year of a Minority Science and Engineering Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING Generations of donors contribute annually to keep the College of Mount Saint Vincent strong, and their dedicated support allows the Mount to continue its mission for future students as well. There are many opportunities for giving to the College and gifts can take several forms. Most contributions also provide the donor with an income tax deduction for the year of the gift. Please carefully consider the many options available for your future giving. The Ad Lux campaign offers a unique opportunity for alumnae/i and friends of the College to engage in meaningful philanthropy that will ensure Mount Saint Vincent's future success. ANNUAL FUND An Annual Fund gift is an opportunity to provide an unrestricted contribution to the Mount. The Annual Fund supports all areas of the College including financial aid, faculty development, buildings and grounds maintenance, student activities, and upgraded technology programs. CAPITAL GIFTS Capital gifts are designated by the donor to fund the College’s capital needs, such as construction and renovation projects.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships give talented and deserving students the opportunity to afford a Mount education. Gifts can be made to a general scholarship fund or to the Scholarship Tribute Dinner to benefit all scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named and will support future generations of students.

For more information about giving to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (718) 405-3237 or institutionaladvancement@mountsaintvincent.edu.

WAYS TO GIVE CASH Gifts of cash immediately benefit the College. Checks, cash, and contributions made through a donor’s Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit or debit card are gratefully accepted. SECURITIES Like cash contributions, a gift of securities entitles the donor to an income tax deduction in the year it is given. The most convenient way to give a gift of securities is to arrange a transfer by a broker to the College’s account. To make a gift of securities, contact the College’s broker: The Lerner Group Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc 225 Liberty Street | 39th Floor | New York, NY 10281 (212) 236-5583 CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Many businesses have matching gift programs, which can double or even triple a gift to the College. They are easy to arrange and are of no cost to the donor. Please contact your employer’s human resources office for more information about matching gifts.

PLANNED GIFTS Planned gifts are popular and creative ways to support the Mount and can allow you to receive significant financial benefits during your lifetime. BEQUESTS You may include the Mount in your will by designating a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to the College. PLEASE REMEMBER: • Any gift can be made in honor or in memory of someone special. • In order to receive a 2019 charitable income tax deduction, gifts must be postmarked by December 31. All credit card gifts must be processed by December 31 as well. • The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers age 70 ½ or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, including colleges, universities, and independent schools. To make a gift via the IRA Charitable Rollover, please contact your IRA plan administrator. • Gifts can be made online at mountsaintvincent.edu/giving.
