CENTENNIAL SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT LIZ BROWN, M.D., B.S. '68

Elizabeth "Liz" R. Brown, Class of 1968, is an avowed snowbird, traveling annually between her summer home in Silver Lake, New Hampshire and her winter home in Port Charlotte, Florida. She is active in both communities, planning golf outings and social gatherings, some of which raise funds for college scholarships. Her enthusiastic support of her alma mater is many-layered: she co-chairs the College’s Science Advisory Committee, has served as a Mount Mentor, and stays in touch with other Mount alumnae.

A distinguished neonatologist, Liz earned her M.D. from the University of Maryland and trained in Boston at Harvard Medical School’s Joint Program in Neonatology. After training, she was invited to join the staff as a clinical physician in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, pursuing an abiding research interest in fetal and newborn lung development for many years before retiring in 2008. As a member of the esteemed Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance, a program of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Liz helps the organization provide opportunities for Kellogg Fellows around the world to make a positive impact through a wide variety of social justice initiatives.

Liz has also been quite creative in making charitable contributions to the College. She has named Mount Saint Vincent among the residual beneficiaries of a trust she set up, and in 2016, she named the College as one of the beneficiaries of her Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Her initial pledge allowed her to establish the Dr. Elizabeth R. Brown Scholarship, which she augments annually through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from her IRA. Liz’s annual QCD withdrawals help to satisfy her required minimum distribution (RMD), and since the contributions are used for charitable purposes, the gift doesn’t count as income, thus reducing Liz’s annual income level and providing another tax advantage. WE GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGE our Centennial Society donors—alumnae/i and friends who have made long-range or planned gifts to the College. Such gifts include bequests, life insurance, appreciated securities, retirement funds, charitable gift annuities, real estate, and personal property.

CENTENNIAL SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT PEGGY STEFFANN '65

Peggy Steffann, Class of 1965, decided to attend the College of Mount Saint Vincent after hearing her mother, a 1939 graduate, speak glowingly about her own experiences here. Knowing her mother had maintained friendships with many classmates over her 97 years, Peggy did likewise. She has attended every class reunion since her 1965 graduation, has maintained connections and close friendships with many classmates, and has been actively involved with the Alumnae/i Association since 2015. She is currently its President.

Peggy retired in 2007 after a 42-year career in social work that began almost immediately after graduation. Armed with her Mount degree and an M.S.W. from Fordham University, she worked with children and families in foster care and adoption, residential placements, and other services, first as a social worker and later as a supervisor and administrator.

Over the years, Peggy has observed much growth and many changes at the Mount. One aspect has remained constant: “The Mount continues to strive for academic excellence and student success,” she says. “I see the College reaching out to an increasingly more diverse student body, providing quality education in a supportive environment.”

Peggy wanted to make a gift to the Mount that would help maintain the excellence and affordability of a Mount Saint Vincent education in the years to come. As a longtime contributor to the work of the Alumnae/i Association, she wanted to ensure her contributions would continue. She chose to accomplish this by naming the College in her will as a beneficiary of a portion of her estate. In this way, Peggy hopes to enhance the impact that her many years of service and support will have on future generations of students.
