THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC, Mount Saint Vincent successfully positioned itself as a leader on COVID safety. However, during the 2020-2021 year, the College was once again unable to host its annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner, which raises essential funds for institutional scholarships and financial aid awards. The loss of the event was especially significant because the pandemic created additional financial challenges for students and their families. Between March 2020 and May 2021, one out of every five Mount undergraduates sought a financial aid appeal. Trustees of the College responded to this need by pledging $250,000 and inviting the Mount’s alumnae/i and friends to match the figure. Once again, this community responded selflessly and enthusiastically, meeting and exceeding the match amount to raise a cumulative $562,600.

Michael McTague MARISA HANSEN ’23 knew the Mount was the best fit for her—the Right Place on the River—from the moment she first stepped on campus.

Her family would not have been able to afford Marisa’s exceptional education at Mount Saint Vincent if it weren’t for the generous Alumni and Friends Grants she received. Those grants have given her the opportunity to be a resident student on campus, allowing her to move out of the small apartment she shares with five other family members and providing her with a quiet space to study. She’s also been able to flourish as a student leader, assuming roles as president of the Campus Activities Board, vice president for the Class of 2023, and secretary of the Science Club, among others.

Marisa’s got a bright future ahead of her, aspiring to follow in her family’s footsteps and join the armed forces. Her grandfather served in the Army and her dad as a Marine, and her sister is currently in the Army. Marisa—a biology major—hopes to one day land a career as a laboratory scientist for the United States Navy. But she’ll never forget the academic guidance and financial support she got from the College.

“I’m forever grateful for the Alumni and Friends Grants I was awarded,” said Marisa. “Your generosity has given me a home at the Mount—a place celebrated for its diversity and small class sizes. Thank you giving me a chance to thrive!”

Not only is DORIAN ROBINSON ’22 one of the star players of the College’s men’s basketball team, he’s also a head tour guide for the Office of Admission, vice president of the Dolphin Difference Coalition, and a First Year Experience peer leader.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dorian took a leap of faith traveling across the country to attend college in New York as a communication major—and it was the best decision he ever made.

But affording to go to an out-of-state school— especially a small, private, liberal arts college with an emphasis on the development of the whole person— would have been impossible for Dorian without the help of Alumni and Friends Grants.

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Alumni and Friends Grants I received,” explained Dorian. “Your generosity has helped not only me, but every single member of the College community. Mount students change lives, and your support has ignited that passion in all of us.”

Gifts to the Alumni and Friends Grant Challenge have given students like Dorian the resources needed to launch his career as a sports journalist. But he can’t look toward the future without thinking about the present, and the scholarships Dorian’s received have—without a doubt—taken a great deal of financial pressure off him and his family.

Dorian’s words to everyone who selflessly gave to the Alumni and Friends Grant Challenge are simple: “Thank you.”
