LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, Greetings from the *soon-to-be* University of Mount Saint Vincent! I am pleased to share with you that, effective January 1, 2024, we will officially earn university status as designated by the New York State Board of Regents. This is an inspiring time in the Mount’s nearly two centuries-long history, and I am eager for you to join me on this journey. Our evolution to the University of Mount Saint Vincent could not come at a better time. Over the last year, we have launched several milestone initiatives that make our transition to a university both justified and welldeserved. Of these initiatives, several stand out, particularly the formation of Seton College—our new two-year associates degree program created through a partnership with the Come to Believe Network—and the naming of the Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing with the dedicated and generous support of our neighbor and fellow Sisters of Charity of New York sponsored ministry, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers. I encourage you to read more about these two remarkable programs (and more!) in the pages that follow. As we transition to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, know that we will both honor our past by retaining the undergraduate College of Mount Saint Vincent, which is grounded in the bonds of a close-knit community, and look to the future with the launch of Seton College—a new opportunity to create community for those undergraduate students who will benefit from the holistic support of the Mount. The University will also formally launch the College of Professional and Graduate Studies, where adult learners who are looking for online and/or in person career-advancing degree options can find quality educational experiences designed to help them achieve their personal and professional goals. Of course, this is just a small sampling of everything that is to come. Over the next few weeks, you will see many exciting changes taking shape as we officially become a university. And I very much look forward to sharing more details with you about Ologie, our marketing partner in our rebranding efforts. I want to sincerely thank you for your commitment to our dear Mount Saint Vincent, your dedication to our mission in your personal and professional lives, and your ever-growing generosity in support of our students, our programs, and our facilities. Please know that we are not rewriting our history, nor are we becoming something completely unrecognizable. We are transforming traditions here at the Right Place on the River. We remain inherently the same, and yet respond to the signs of the times as the Sisters of Charity of New York inspire us to do. Two Sisters of Charity Sponsored Ministries, One Mission:

Healthcare Leadership for the Common Good The College of Mount Saint Vincent and Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers are proud to have recently announced the naming of the Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing at Mount Saint Vincent, supported by a $2.5 million donation from the hospital.

This new partnership will help develop several modern nursing education initiatives at the Mount, including expanded research and clinical opportunities, student scholarships, and support for faculty—all in recognition of the shared charism instilled in us by our mutual foundresses, the Sisters of Charity of New York.

Like many states around the country, New York is struggling with a nursing shortage following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A high turnover rate in the field—coupled with a spike in baby boomer-age retirement—has New York State facing an overall shortage of almost 40,000 nurses by 2030, according to the New York State Department of Health. Luckily, in recent news from the Office of the New York State Comptroller, the nursing workforce is expected to grow by 6% by 2031, with over 200,000 jobs opening each year. However, that still won’t be enough to fill every open nursing position in the state.

Both the Mount and Saint Joseph’s are united in the enduring history of the Sisters of Charity—having both been founded by the Congregation in 1847 and 1888, respectively. The Sisters have long served the people of New York as nurses and healthcare professionals. The naming of the Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing and the inventive new partnership only further imbues the Charism of Charity among our local communities of the Bronx, Westchester, and beyond. “Mount Saint Vincent has been training caring, competent nurses for decades—first in partnership with St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, and now through the College’s own program that has consistently graduated some of New York’s best nursing professionals since the program resumed in 1975,” said

The good news? At the Mount, there are currently 330 students enrolled in the College’s traditional undergraduate nursing curriculum, with an additional 268 students taking part in the accelerated second degree BS in nursing program. The accelerated program offers both in-seat classes at the Mount’s main Riverdale campus as well as a hybrid model at extension sites in Queens and Brooklyn. certificate program in family nurse practitioner studies for graduate students interested in expanding their knowledge of nursing practice. Michael J. Spicer, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center President and CEO, shared: “This exciting new relationship between Saint Joseph’s and the Mount is a unique opportunity to shape the future of both organizations. For over 135 years, Saint Joseph’s has been providing high-quality care, and I cannot think of a better partner than the College of Mount Saint Vincent to develop high-caliber and compassionate nurses. I am even more proud that, together, we get to expand upon the legacy of the Sisters of Charity.” The Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing will provide Mount students with the opportunity to complement their liberal arts education with the practical knowledge and skills required to excel in the healthcare industry. The collaboration with the Mount will serve as a mission-based model between higher education and healthcare in service for the common good. Mount Saint Vincent will greatly expand clinical placement opportunities for its students at Saint Joseph’s—including a new “preferred employer” program advertised to all Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing graduates. In turn, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, which specializes in patientcentered, quality-focused inpatient and outpatient care, will gain a plethora of opportunities for its employees.

Qualified Saint Joseph’s employees will gain access to preferential enrollment consideration and up to a 20% discounted tuition rate in all Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing programs. Additionally, qualified employees will be considered for honorary adjunct professorships with the Mount. Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing students who commit to full-time employment at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center for no less than five years upon graduation will also have access to $25,000 in loan repayment opportunities. In Fall 2021, Mount Saint Vincent opened the doors to Aquino Hall— an integrated building of student residential space and simulation laboratories for students in the health professions. It was named in honor of one the Mount’s most illustrious and influential alumnae, Corazon C. Aquino ’53, who served as the first female president of the Philippines. Through instructional technologies—including state-of-the-art patient simulators, live-action simulation, and observation areas—the laboratories housed on the first two floors of Aquino Hall allow students to practice and master the essential skills needed for several nursing specializations. All nursing programs will be directed under the leadership of Catherine Healy-Sharbaugh, Dean of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer at Mount Saint Vincent. Dr. Healy-Sharbaugh was just recently named to her new position this past June, having served as a full-time

professor at the Mount prior to her appointment. She is an experienced family nurse practitioner and nurse educator who has served in a variety of roles as a healthcare leader with a demonstrated history of working in higher education, at nonprofit organizations, and at some of the nation’s top hospitals. “The naming of the Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing, the generous gift made by the hospital, and the deeply transformational opportunities that will abound are thrilling pieces of news for our students, alumnae/i, faculty, and the entire College,” said Dr. HealySharbaugh. “The Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing will empower future crucial nursing education that addresses social determinants of health, improves population health, and promotes health equity. This altruistic act will fulfill the dreams and launch the careers of thousands of young people who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to pursue a nursing degree. We are immensely grateful for the generosity and confidence of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center and their efforts to further catalyze nursing research, education, and service to those in need.” And, of course, the naming of the Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing does not solely benefit Mount students and Saint Joseph’s Medical Center employees. There will be a tremendous positive impact on our local communities— especially for the City of Yonkers. “The fantastic news of the new collaboration between these two longstanding local institutions supports further economic development in Yonkers and the surrounding areas, which will create hundreds of jobs for local residents,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. An agreement-signing ceremony was held on November 1 at the Mount Saint Vincent campus and was attended by leadership from both the Mount and Saint Joseph’s, representatives from the Sisters of Charity, Bronx and Yonkers legislators, and local community members.

Seton College: Every Student Deserves a Place at the Mount xcitement always abounds on the Mount’s Riverdale campus as hundreds gather for our annual Reunion and Homecoming Weekend celebrations in October, but—this year—the community-wide enthusiasm was only further amplified as Mount Saint Vincent announced the launch of Seton College, a new two-year college on its campus, in partnership with the Come to Believe Network (CTB), a nonprofit that assists higher education institutions in developing and launching two-year programs that provide pathways for underserved students to receive fouryear degrees. Inspired by the charism of the Sisters of Charity of New York and their two centuries-long mission of providing transformational educational

experiences to all students—regardless of family and financial means—Seton College will be a two-year junior college that will educate students in the Vincentian/Setonian tradition and enable them to either enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college or university at the conclusion of their studies. The Mount is forever indebted to our foundresses for their endless support of higher education, but their commitment has only been further recognized in their generosity to underwrite a significant investment to launch Seton College. Following such a substantial gift, the Mount made the considerate decision to name the new two-year school after the Congregation’s founding mother and the first American-born Catholic Saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton.

“For over 175 years, Mount Saint Vincent has been educating students rooted in the tenets of goodness, discipline, and knowledge,” remarked President Susan R. Burns. “Our dear Sisters are trailblazers. They are heroines and they are innovators. It took a lot of courage for the Mount to take this leap and form a two-year school on campus. But, after watching what the Sisters have done for generations of young people seeking the benefits of education—women, the sick, the marginalized—we knew this was something we had to do to continue to ensure every single student seeking access to higher education can receive it.” An October 2022 study issued by the Office of the New York State Comptroller stated that, in 2019, only three quarters of New York City’s

public high school students graduated on time and, of those graduates, an even smaller percentage—57 percent— were considered college-ready. There are, of course, many varying definitions to college-readiness, but they all have at their core assessments of students’ proficiency levels in reading, writing, and math. Furthermore, over one third of those New York City public high school graduates in 2019 did not enroll in any type of college or university within six months of graduation, and over twelve percent of those who did enroll dropped out within 18 months. Students from minority backgrounds were overrepresented in this population—and are most often those most significantly impacted by the effects of intergenerational poverty. It has been further proven that education is the best tool for combating poverty and fostering economic growth. The College of Mount Saint Vincent was recently ranked number one on U.S. News & World Report’s list of top performers for social mobility within the northeast. In the coming decade, economic forecasts show that the fastest growing professions will all require education or training beyond high school. Seton College will help make transformative career opportunities not only attainable, but within reach for deserving young people in our local communities of the Bronx, lower Westchester, and beyond. “We are determined to help close the educational attainment gap here in New York City,” continued Dr. Burns. “The landscape of higher education is evidently changing. Since the start of the pandemic, particularly, families across the country have been questioning the value of a four-year degree and have instead shown higher levels of support for students interested in pursuing a two-year degree. With that in mind, we are proud to open Seton College and further demonstrate how the Mount is continuing to listen to the signs of the

times and preparing all students to become leaders in their chosen fields and communities.” To help establish Seton College, the Mount has partnered with CTB, a nonprofit organization that works as an accelerator within the higher education space by helping institutions bring its model to life through a resultsdriven, affordable two-year commuter program. The model, developed under the leadership of Fr. Steve Katsouros, SJ, EdD, offers eligible students who would have otherwise been excluded

from higher education the opportunity to earn an associate degree. So far, the CTB model has been successfully implemented at Arrupe College (hosted by Loyola University Chicago) and Dougherty Family College (hosted by the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota). “The students in our model colleges come to believe that they have a place in higher education,” said Fr. Katsouros, Founder, President, and CEO of Come to Believe and the Founding Dean of Arrupe College. “Mount Saint Vincent already has a rich history of serving the

underserved. It was an easy decision for Come to Believe to partner with the Mount to found Seton College, which will provide a pathway for underserved students across the New York area to obtain a degree.” The CTB model typically aims to serve students who are first-generation and/ or Federal Pell Grant-eligible. Learners are provided with a structured and supportive cohort. Currently, over 75 percent of CTB students who enter a four-year college or university upon graduation complete a bachelor’s

degree in five years—compared to only 14 percent of students nationally who finish a two-year program and complete a bachelor’s degree in six years. Less than 25 percent of students enrolled in CTB model colleges accumulate debt while obtaining their associate degree. That will continue to be the goal for the students of Seton College. “We want our students to graduate debt-free,” continued Fr. Katsouros. “Already low tuition costs, coupled with state and federal aid and continued on page 13

generous institutional scholarships supported by donor-generated funds, help students focus on what’s most important: their education and not how they are going to pay for it.” The CTB model centers on rigorous academic programming, high-touch staffing, and holistic student supports. Students enroll in the same level of classes they would at a four-year institution, but purposely small class sizes are taught by dedicated, fulltime faculty members who provide personalized support. Additionally, all students receive breakfast and lunch each day they are on campus, a laptop, and the help of a financial aid officer and social workers.

With so much abuzz on campus this academic year—including the launch of the University of Mount Saint Vincent— it’s only fitting for the Mount to have such exciting news to share with our community as we continue to position ourselves as the Right Place on the River. But, let’s not forget that our deeprooted belief that a student’s education extends far beyond knowledge, skills, and preparation for work, and rather the comprehensive development of the whole person, continues to expand as we welcome more and more diverse groups of learners into the Mount community.

The first cohort of 100 students at Seton College will enroll in Fall 2024 and will be offered four pathways toward an Associate of Arts degree: liberal arts, medical, business, and social sciences. The Mount has selected Jason Ford to serve as Founding Dean. Dean Ford brings to Seton College years of experience overseeing the administrative operations of both academic and nonprofit organizations. Most recently, he worked as a member of the Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corporation (SCHDC)— another sponsored ministry of the Congregation—managing 17 existing affordable, supportive, and homeless housing developments in Rockland County and in Manhattan and Staten Island, NY. Prior to his work with the SCHDC, he spent time in the enrollment management and student affairs divisions at Iona University in New Rochelle, NY and held tenures as a classroom teacher and assistant principal in Catholic schools across the country. “I’m honored to have been selected to serve as the Founding Dean of Seton College,” said Dean Ford. “We have a lot of work to do over the next few months—preparing space on the Mount’s campus for our classrooms

weekdays and on weekends. Students who qualify for admission to Seton College will be those who are ineligible for admission to the undergraduate College of Mount Saint Vincent. Seton College students will have high school records that are below the standard admission requirements for the undergraduate college, and their families will also demonstrate significant financial need with an estimated family contribution of at or near zero dollars. Graduates of Seton College will be welcome, but not mandated, to transfer to the undergraduate college.

Scholarship Tribute Dinner ount Saint Vincent’s annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner returned for another year on May 3, 2023, celebrating a fantastic slate of honorees and raising funds for scholarships and grants for the Mount’s welldeserving students. Mount community members; guests; Sisters of Charity; and leaders in businesses, government, healthcare, and social services all came together to rally behind a great cause: our ever-growing and talented student body. 100% of the Mount’s traditional undergraduate students—yes, 100%!—receive scholarships to help offset the cost of their education. That’s something remarkable and, unfortunately, a rarity among institutions in our nation. But, thanks to the generosity of everyone who supported the 2023 Scholarship Tribute Dinner, the Mount is able to continue its tradition of providing all students—regardless of financial means—the opportunity to transform their lives through the benefits of higher education. This year’s Dinner, held at a stunning new location—Gotham Hall—raised a grand total of over $560,000. Every penny of the proceeds raised from support of the event go directly to the students. This year, the Mount’s secondever text-to-give campaign had guests tapping on cell phones from across the room—raising nearly $36,000 from both attendees and Mount community members following along from the comfort of their own homes. The event kicked-off with an inspiring testament from one of the Mount’s very own: Tianna Williams ’23. Tianna graduated in May with a major in psychology and a minor in business. A Bronx native, she began graduate school this Fall to obtain her MSEd in school psychology. Tianna spoke about how engaging in a liberal arts education prepared her to start her own small business, and how she had the opportunity to present research she conducted at a national conference. She also praised the Mount’s robust work-study program, thanking her colleagues in the campus store for their inspiration and guidance.

“Most of my achievements are due to my consistent drive and motivation,” Tianna admitted. “When life says no, I say yes: proving that all things are possible. During my time at the Mount, my efforts were acknowledged and rewarded. It’s often said it takes a village, and Mount Saint Vincent has been my village. I’ve had endless support and encouragement which made my journey a celebration.” Tianna received resounding applause—and a standing ovation— from the packed room of guests. The event welcomed 32 student leaders from across the Mount, who represented the more than 1,400 undergraduates who received scholarships this academic year— cumulatively valued in excess of $37 million in institutional aid. And, of course, then evening would not have been complete without acknowledging the Mount’s momentous 175th Anniversary! As part of the celebration, the Mount was proud to honor our founding congregation: the Sisters of Charity of New York. Vanessa L. Gibson, Bronx Borough President, was elated to honor both the Mount and the Sisters with an official proclamation declaring May 3 “College of Mount Saint Vincent Day” in the Bronx! The proclamation was presented by Stacy Strong ’11, a proud Mount alumna who currently works in the Office of the Bronx Borough President. Certainly no less influential, the Mount was also excited to honor John Prufeta, General Partner and Founder of Medical Excellence Capital, LLC, and Fran Weissler, theatrical producer. President Susan R. Burns, PhD took the stage toward the end of the evening’s program to offer her remarks. She shared the importance of the Mount’s tight-knit community and holistic approach to education: “I am exceptionally proud of the way Mount Saint Vincent continues to respond to the signs of the times throughout the ever-changing climate of higher education and

beyond,” said Dr. Burns. “I say with the utmost sincerity that at the Mount, we meet our learners when, where, and how they need us—always. Our professors, advisors, staff, and administrators all work tirelessly to ensure that our students—who each bring the unique gifts of their diverse backgrounds into our classrooms and shared spaces—have the resources they need to transform their lives through the unparalleled benefits of a Mount education.” Dr. Burns was also sure to thank the generous supporters of the Mount’s students and programs, who have made the Mount the Right Place on the River for students from near and far. “Thank you all for everything you make possible for the students we are privileged to serve. Thank you for joining us in celebrating the significant work of our distinguished honorees. And thank you for all the ways you have supported the Mount for the last 175 years. A Library for the Next 175 Years ibraries are almost always the hallmark of any educational institution across the globe. For centuries, academic libraries have served as the heart of information—a source of knowledge and power—for students, professors, administrators and all who have perused their stacks. Aisles and aisles of books, volumes, encyclopedias, journals—the list goes on—have generated idea after idea and supported paper after paper. But, in this age of technology, the books have collected dust, shelves have been left untouched, and the faint “beep” of the barcode scanner is rarely heard as today’s students opt for the speed and convenience of the internet and leave the books behind. In institutions of higher education throughout the country, libraries have become ghost towns. Already quiet spaces have become quieter. Funding has been slashed, positions have been cut, and materials have been left unused. But the Mount— always forward-thinking—has already been hard at work to redefine what it means to be a library in the 21st century—to garner the proper resources to serve students of the next 175 years and beyond. Now, the Elizabeth Seton Library at Mount Saint Vincent isn’t going anywhere. As with the entirety of the College’s transition to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, we’re reimagining the traditional use of the library space to best serve the students of today. The second floor of the Library has already been transformed into the Charles L. Flynn, Jr. Academic Resource Commons, housing a majority of the Mount’s student support services. The Oxley Integrated Advising Program— encompassing the Mount Pathways Programs (HEOP, TRiO, and MAP), the Academic Resource Center, and

career and internship counseling— have had their home on the second floor for just over two years now. Stacks of books were removed to make way for dedicated group study spaces, advisor offices, computer work stations, and more comfortable lounge furniture to promote an adaptive learning environment. This—and more—is what a 21st century library needs to be: a space for learning, a space for personal and academic development, and a space for exploration. There is no longer the need for the storage of walls upon walls of information, as we can gain immediate access to the answer to almost any question directly at our fingertips on our phones and computers. Joseph Levis, the Director for the Elizabeth Seton Library at the Mount, has seen this evolution first-hand. “When thinking about the future of the Elizabeth Seton Library and our role in it, I keep coming back to a report from The Chronicle of Higher Education that I read recently, entitled, appropriately enough, ‘The Library of the Future,’” Joe remarked. Joe went on to describe that the article discussed the evolving notion of the librarian, the changing role of library spaces, and the types of resources the modern library is expected to have. “With a shift towards electronic resources in recent years, we’ve managed to add over 235,000 e-books in the past decade alone,” continued Joe. “When looking at print books, we’ve gathered approximately 90,000 over the last half century. It’s almost incomparable.” If the 65,000 unique e-journals the Mount has access to via databases on the internet were printed out and

placed on library stacks, they would stand over 10 stories tall—something quite remarkable. Joe summarizes that the library of the future is one that includes a vast number of resources that can be accessed from patrons’ technological devices, as well as in person. Since the bulk of the Elizabeth Seton Library’s current collection can be accessed from anywhere in the world with an internet connection, the Mount’s Library team is ensuring that support is offered to both traditional students studying on campus and the growing number of remote students who study solely online. Currently, Mount Saint Vincent serves over 1,200 students in online graduate and adult/professional programs through collaborations with organizations like Academic Partnerships (AP). With a plan to add nearly 20 more online programs this January, the number of remote students utilizing the Mount’s library resources will only continue to expand. Affording this population of students access to e-books and e-journals—as well as 24/7 online tutoring instruction—is a critical factor in their success. “There has been an evident shift in recent years in what we define as a ‘college student,’” remarked Lynne Bongiovanni, Provost and Dean of the College. “More and more adult learners are going back to school to complete degrees online—or are finally taking the leap to start one. At the same time, we see both the good and bad impacts of technology on our more ‘traditional’ aged college population. Reimagining the use of the Library is fundamental for the academic support all students need.” With all this in mind, there is also the need for the expansion of the traditional role of the librarian. Joe explained:

“The most important part of our jobs is now to teach patrons how to search effectively through the mass of information available on the internet. In the past, we would have provided access to a limited number of vetted resources. Now, there is a limitless supply of knowledge and, in many cases, it is the patrons and students themselves who will need to do the vetting. The role of the librarian has evolved to scrupulously aid them in that process.” Students who are enrolled in the Mount’s online programs account for a wider range of age groups and backgrounds compared to traditional-age undergraduate students. For this reason, modernday librarians are tasked with finding creative ways to offer support via email, chat, telephone, and virtual reference meetings. This, of course, does not leave out the physical library space, as it must continue to include spaces for people to learn and engage beyond the classroom in a reimagined potential as a dynamic space for all members of the Mount community to gather. It’s no secret that a great deal of capital projects have focused on the task of transforming the Elizabeth Seton Library space over the past few years—with the renovations on the second floor already proving to be an undoubtable success. To complete this work, the Mount received generous gifts from alumnae/i, as well as $1,000,000 in grant funding from the New York State and Municipal Projects Fund. In June 2022, the George I. Alden Trust awarded the Mount with a generous grant of $180,000 to help offset some of the costs of the building’s infrastructure and exterior envelope repairs. The Alden Trust is no stranger to the Elizabeth Seton Library, having awarded the Mount significant funding in 2006 to create the Stephen J. Maloney Computer Center on the ground floor—still an invaluable resource for students. A

leaky skylight has created the risk of water damage and mold on the first floor, and has necessitated additional custodial and dehumidification efforts. Needless to say, this runs counter to the Mount’s desire to create a supportive learning environment. As exterior repairs wrap up and air conditioning and HVAC work are completed—imagine studying for May final exams in a steamy, sweltering library?!—the building will soon be ready for preparation and planning to begin on the first floor. In 2013, the College assembled a Library Planning Committee that included members of the faculty, student body, staff, and administration to determine how the Elizabeth Seton Library could best support and advance the Mount’s academic mission and growing student population. Based on a survey sent out by the Committee at the time, several goals were established and many have already been accomplished. However, several remain, including: incorporating expanded space to house the Center for Leadership, providing small seminar space, creating a more inviting entry experience, unifying help desk services, and even creating a café.

These projects are all at the forefront of the eventual transformation of the Elizabeth Seton Library into a true 21st century learning environment to support students both on and beyond campus. But it all comes with a cost— literally. The Mount hopes to raise significant funding to support what would be one of the final phases of the multi-phase, decade-long renovation and expansion of the Library, building off of the enthusiasm and momentum of fundraising activities garnered from the previous phases. “By supporting Elizabeth Seton Library renovations, you have the opportunity to enable the Mount to continue to provide its students with access to the resources needed to enhance advisement, enrichment, and research inquiry,” continued Dr. Bongiovanni. “A modernized library space will ensure our growingly diverse student population of learners both in seat and online are equipped to enter and excel in their chosen careers upon graduation. There’s much more work to be done to ensure the Library is prepared to support the next generation of students. Let’s do it together.”

Vincent’s Table is a collaborative hunger outreach initiative sponsored by both Mount Saint Vincent and the Sisters of Charity of New York. The program has a simple mission: Vincent’s Table responds to the needs of those who face food insecurity and homelessness in the northwest Bronx and southern Yonkers by providing them with nourishing food while recognizing the dignity and value of each individual. Vincent’s Table has also set up a food pantry and community refrigerator on campus, where Mount community members can leave what they can and take what they need. A gift to Vincent’s Table helps put food into the hungry stomachs of those on the Mount’s campus and beyond.

Mott Street Scholarship Program

FUND FACTS

The Mott Street Scholarship Program gives talented students who have persevered through foster care or homelessness, and who are academically and emotionally ready to attend college, a place to finally call home—while also giving them a second chance at success through the benefits of higher education. The Program was named in honor of the Sisters of Charity’s first ministry in New York City, the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum, which was established in 1817 between Mott and Prince Streets. A gift to the Mott Street Scholarship helps provide deserving students with tuition, fees, year-round room and board, books, a laptop, health insurance, and more.

Certifiably the Best Candidates for the Job etting a job in today’s market is hard. Getting a job in a field you love and studied for can be even harder. Undergraduates entering the job hunt after college are often left perplexed by job descriptions requiring a laundry list of skills and qualifications—jobs listed as “entry level,” but asking for years upon years of experience or even a master’s degree. To put it simply, it’s discouraging for today’s eager, young people aiming to begin their professional lives. At Mount Saint Vincent, however, we’ve always been doing our part to ensure our students have the skills and preparation needed to not only get one of those jobs, but launch their careers. For decades, administrators, advisors, and professors at the Mount have been conducting research on the greatest up-and-coming majors, minors, programs, and certificates— ensuring our institution remains always ahead of the statistics by providing our students with the best educational experience and preparation possible. Our firm belief in the power of the liberal arts has given our graduates greater marketability for jobs in endless fields and subjects. And now, the Mount is helping its undergraduate students gain even more of a competitive edge over their peers from neighboring institutions hunting for those same jobs by offering an array of professional microcredential certificate programs. Beginning in January, juniors and seniors—as well as students in Seton College—can pair their majors with one or more certificates, equipping them with some of the most current, in-demand skills and preparing them for job success. through online coursework, these certificate programs offer students an opportunity to obtain information and context from a specific industry and connect their new skills and findings back to the root of their academics. “We know a liberal arts education remains the best preparation for lifelong learning, and for the development of a satisfying career,” said Lynne Bongiovanni, Provost and Dean of the College. “Each of the disciplines in the liberal arts allow for a myriad of professional pathways; these new certificate programs are intended to help our students find a starting point to their professional journey.” By expanding upon its already broad curriculum, Mount Saint Vincent will now aim to deliver practical, jobrelevant learning experiences with professional content through online certificate programs taught by university and industry experts. By opting to add one of these certificate programs to their coursework, Mount students will gain common job skills that 21st century employers look for, showcase their skill mastery by maintaining a portfolio of work, and explore a range of in-demand roles across industries to help them land a well-paying job immediately following the conclusion of their studies. Mount students come from extremely diverse backgrounds, representing nearly every cultural, religious, and ethnic group possible. Our students hail from the Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey, California, Texas, China, Nigeria—the list goes on. However, the Mount’s students are also economically diverse, with over half of our students receiving Federal Pell Grants to help them pay for their education.

They are diligent, they are dedicated, and, in the end, they are successful: climbing the economic ranks in the decades after they graduate and proving that a college education is not in vain. A college education is the ticket to a prosperous life and career. By adding one of these new microcredential certificate programs to their resumes, students elevate their marketability and show potential employers that they are the best fit for the job—no questions asked. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, in the next decade, the growth of the digital economy is expected to support an expanding job market across information and transportation sectors. At the same time, e-commerce is expected to take over traditional retail—no surprise there. The certificate programs offered at the Mount reflect the needs and opportunities of these growing fields.

More than 40 certificates will be offered through partnerships with industry leaders Google, IBM, Microsoft, Meta, Intuit, and more. Topic areas include cybersecurity, digital marketing, software engineering, project management, data science, network engineering, and social media marketing. By completing one or more of these certificate programs, Mount students will be more likely to land roles in software and IT, data, and business, just to name a few. An English major with a knack for writing might earn a certificate in social media marketing to help her land a role managing the accounts for a global company. A business major might earn a certificate in human resources to help him lead the department of a major New York

City firm. And a mathematics major with a hobby for coding might earn a certificate in iOS development to help her transform her passion into a rewarding career with an online software development company. It’s all about showing students that they can take something they love and use it to help them land a job. “Our hope is that students utilize this opportunity—which we are delighted to make available to them at no added cost—and synthesize these supplemental learning opportunities within the context of their whole education at the Mount,” added Dr. Bongiovanni. “When they do, our students will truly distinguish themselves during job interviews and in their first job. A new professional who can demonstrate an appreciation

of the latest developments in a field, as well as the critical thinking and reasoning skills necessary for continued improvement, is a musthire in today’s job market.” Helping our students make the most of their college education by constantly and consistently providing them with the resources needed to push them to the top of the list? There’s no doubt about it. The only thing left to do is see where their skills take them next.

GRANTS & CONTRACTS FOUNDATION AWARDS The Robert & Joan Dircks Foundation, Inc. continued its remarkable support of the Mott Street Scholarship Program with an award of $20,000. The Foundation’s philanthropy supports students who persevered through homelessness and/or foster care. The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities made an award of $15,000. The grant, made in memory of Yvonne Raskob, supported scholarships for nursing students. The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust awarded the College $15,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students. GOVERNMENT AWARDS In September 2022, Mount Saint Vincent received notification of a new Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Providing more than $2.3 million over the five-year grant period, the grant will advance targeted initiatives designed to improve student success. First-year funding exceeded $580,000.

Academic year 2022-2023 was the third year of a five-year SSS TRiO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Mount received $331,000 in the year to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students. The College will receive $1.6 million in funding over the course of the grant period, which runs through August 2025.

The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate promising students who will succeed at the college level and beyond. The grant authorized $1,350,000 for 2022-2023, with cumulative funds awarded totaling $6,750,000 through 2024.

In October 2022, the College began the final year of a five-year National Science Foundation Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Students. The project, led by Pamela Kerrigan, PhD, Director of Natural Sciences and Professor of Chemistry, will provide scholarships and enrichment activities for 22 students pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. The grant will provide $959,955 over five years.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) awarded Mount Saint Vincent a third campus grant in September 2022, in recognition of its efforts to create and maintain a safe and healthy campus community by implementing systems and educational activities that reduce sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. The grant project will run through 2025 and provide $269,000.

The 2022-2023 academic year was the fourth year of a five-year award to operate a New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The program is designed for students who have the potential and

There are many opportunities for giving to the Mount and gifts can take several forms. Most contributions also provide the donor with an income tax deduction for the year of the gift. Gifts can be made to a general scholarship fund or to the Scholarship Tribute Dinner to benefit all scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named and will support future generations of students.

CAPITAL GIFTS Capital gifts are designated by the donor to fund the Mount’s capital needs, such as construction and renovation projects.

WAYS TO GIVE CASH Gifts of cash immediately benefit the Mount. Checks, cash, and contributions made through a donor’s MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit or debit card are gratefully accepted. SECURITIES Like cash contributions, a gift of securities entitles the donor to an income tax deduction in the year it is given.
