As parents and coaches mightily struggle with matters pertaining to civility, communication, and collaboration in the best interests of children, young athletes are confronting enormous pressures ranging from bullying and hazing to sport specialization and travel teams. Throw in the vicious insults and comments from the rapidly changing, yet largely anonymous landscape of social media and it appears as if the fun is being taken out of youth sports by the nonparticipants.
This panel will attempt to analyze the current youth sports culture both in the urban and suburban environments as well as a global perspective. While discussing the current state of affairs, the panel will try to identify strategies and recommendations to restore the positive culture and successful mindset back to youth sports. 5:00–5:45 PM | SMITH HALL PANEL 3: ACTIVISM IN THE 21st CENTURY Dr. Oskar Harmon, University of Connecticut Dr. Lequez Spearman, St. John’s University Moderator: Dr. Kristin Lawler This panel will address the national controversy that began with Colin Kaepernick’s first protest during an NFL game in 2016. The controversy grew more intense when other players and other leagues adopted the protest, which caused a stronger reaction from the protest’s opponents. The panel will put Kaepernick’s and other players’ protests against police brutality in historical context and will discuss the role of advertising and commercialism in broadcasting dissent, the economic impact of the protests on the NFL, and the sports media discourse on the issue, as well as its effects on how the public views the issues involved. 6:00–7:00 PM | PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION ROOM CLOSING REMARKS COCKTAIL RECEPTION
