PARTNERS IN LEARNING We’re in this together. You’ll develop one-on-one relationships with professors who learn what you need to thrive and make sure you get it. That might mean an added challenge, a push in a new direction, a little help getting acclimated to college life, or some extra support with coursework. FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE First Year Experience (FYE) helps make the transition to college a little bit smoother. You’ll take an FYE course with your faculty advisor during your first semester and participate in informal social gatherings throughout the year to develop positive work habits and study skills, integrate career education into your studies, and develop strong relationships. HONORS PROGRAM The Honors Program offers highly motivated students a unique and challenging approach to the core curriculum, designed to stimulate intellectual growth, creativity, and critical thinking skills. The program is interdisciplinary, with classes specifically designed to help students decipher complexity while developing academic skills. OXLEY INTEGRATED ADVISING PROGRAM Beginning your first semester until graduation, you will be paired with both a faculty advisor and an Oxley professional advisor. Your professional advisor will help you answer questions and build the skills you need to start a career, not just get a job. Through Oxley, you’ll have access to the finest internship opportunities in NYC, you’ll get involved in and outside the classroom, and you’ll turn experiences into accomplishments.

HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) allows eligible New York State residents the opportunity to pursue higher education and overcome academic vulnerabilities despite limited financial resources. HEOP serves promising students, preparing them to succeed at the college level and beyond. ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER The Academic Resource Center (ARC) is your go-to place for tutoring, study groups, stress relief, and more. The ARC is also home to the College’s Writing Center, which covers just about anything related to writing—from workshops on grammar and sentence structure, to assistance with essay writing and thesis development. TRIO Maybe you’re the first member of your family to attend college—or maybe you just need additional guidance while adjusting to college life. We welcome students of different socioeconomic backgrounds and as a community we’re stronger for it. The TRIO Student Support Services program assists low-income and first-generation college students with academic and professional growth through academic support, leadership development, and mentoring.

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT Academic Advisement is an interactive collaboration between you and your advisor—one of your department’s professors—who will be a source of guidance as you consider how to apply your interests, values, and abilities towards your educational and professional goals. Your advisor will help you choose your classes for the following semester, answer any questions you have about registration and major requirements, and can refer you to appropriate resources for expanding academic opportunities, such as study abroad, internships, and independent study. MOUNT ACCESS PROGRAM The Mount Access Program (MAP) provides higher educational opportunities to students who might not otherwise continue their education. MAP is designed for students who show potential and motivation to succeed in college but have SAT/ACT scores and/or high school records below normal admission requirements. The Program reflects our belief that education is a pathway to success, and our commitment that if given the opportunity, every student can achieve success.

MINDS AT WORK: UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES From psychology to genetics, Mount students present their original research at regional and national conferences. The Center for Undergraduate Research sponsors and supports students developing original research across the College.

LET’S GET CLINICAL Nursing students complete clinical placements, externships, and preceptorships—one-on-one training with experienced nurses—at New York’s most renowned hospitals, including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, NYU Langone Medical Center, New York Presbyterian University Hospitals of Columbia and Cornell, and more. 9

LEARNING IN ACTION SERVICE IS NOT AN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY AT THE MOUNT. Service is an essential component of the College’s mission and the charism of the Sisters of Charity. Through an integrated and broad range of programs, the College challenges its students to be Leaders in Service—individuals who respect the dignity of every person, freely share the benefits of their talent and education, and who understand that true charity is an act of love and respect between equals.

LEADERS IN SERVICE VOLUNTEER SERVICE The Mount partners with various social service agencies in the surrounding community, across the country, and around the world, furthering its commitment to those in need. Through hunger and homelessness outreach, youth mentoring and tutoring, service for and with the Sisters of Charity, sports and recreation volunteer opportunities, awareness and advocacy events, outreach to people with developmental disabilities, mission and ministry trips, and service through work study, Mount students demonstrate an exemplary devotion to promoting the common good. MISSION AND MINISTRY TRIPS Service at the Mount is not limited to our campus or immediate community. Students help surrounding communities and families around Bethlehem Farm in West Virginia, repairing homes and connecting with homeowners in the Appalachian Mountains. They work in teams to repair substandard housing and build new homes for low-income families in Kentucky through the Christian Appalachian Project. They help people facing homelessness and poverty at the St. Francis Inn, a ministry that serves the local Philadelphia community. They work with the Sisters of Charity’s House of Charity in New Orleans, volunteering with the St. Bernard Project to rebuild homes that are still destroyed from Hurricane Katrina. They travel to the Sololá region of Guatemala to work in health clinics, responding to the medical needs of the Guatemalan people. And they serve those who live in poverty in Ethiopia with the Vincentian Lay Missionaries, while working alongside the Daughters of Charity in Africa.

CAMPUS MINISTRY Campus Ministry serves the entire College as a center for spiritual enrichment and personal development, fostering a spirit of service and sense of responsibility as modeled by Saints Vincent de Paul and Elizabeth Ann Seton. All faith backgrounds are encouraged to share in advancing a vibrant faith community while empowering servant leaders. SETON SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Exemplifying the College’s most fundamental values, the Seton Service and Leadership Program welcomes Mount students to join a like-minded community of peers who serve together, fostering servant leadership skills. As diverse as their interests are, students find commonality in service. Program participants engage in frequent spiritual and faith-based reflections, which allow them to think about life’s bigger questions. Reflection helps our students thoughtfully process their spiritual commitment. It helps them understand what they are seeing and doing. And it helps develop the whole person—a key element of the College’s mission. The Seton Service and Leadership Program also offers a competitive scholarship—providing full room and board for four years—sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of New York. Those with high academic profiles and outstanding community service and leadership skills are encouraged to apply. 11

GIVE BACK: VOLUNTEERING AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES At the Mount we try to share the best parts of ourselves and constantly seek new ways to give back to our surrounding community. Students complete over 10,000 hours of service annually. Reflective of the College’s mission, students respond to the immediate needs of the disabled, disenfranchised, elderly, homeless, working poor, and youth, while pursing advocacy and policy work to address the cause of inequities. Our volunteers work to create change with some of the most disadvantaged populations across New York City and beyond.

BE YOU STAY TRUE Like Facebook and many great enterprises, Be You Stay True began with friends developing an idea in a college dorm room. Those friends, Andrew Curiel ’18 and Franciso Zeno ’19, wanted to create a youth basketball group that was an alternative to the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). Knowing many families might not have the resources to pay for leagues and camps, Andrew and Francisco worked hard to create a fun, free camp for children to shoot hoops and learn skills that will allow them to love the game of basketball.

A MOMENT OF MAGIC FOUNDATION Kylee McGrane ’17 and Margaret McAndrew ’17 established A Moment of Magic to give children an experience that can lift them above the everyday— especially important to those who are hospitalized over long periods of time. By restoring the magic of believing at a time when a child needs to ‘just be a kid,’ the group inspires children to be brave, strong, and fearless.

Be You Stay True hosts a day camp in the summer, inviting participants to have fun while also improving their skills as basketball players. The group also invites campers to attend basketball games at the Mount, where children have the opportunity to participate in various events during halftime. Andrew and Francisco have also been able to link their program with the Jr. NBA, the official youth basketball participation program of the NBA, which helps encourage and support youth basketball participation at the grassroots level and improve the overall youth basketball experience for all participants.

The organization—which is recognized as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization—invites volunteers to dress as popular princesses and superheroes and visit children in hospitals, schools, camps, and social service agencies throughout New York and beyond. A Moment of Magic also encourages the initiative to be adopted far beyond the gates of Mount Saint Vincent—the group has launched chapters all over the country. Colleges and universities across the U.S. can participate as either The Fairytale Force, which focuses on characters from the world’s most famous fairytales, or Mission Superhero, which allows volunteers to visit children as caped crusaders. The co-founders spread hope on campus, too. The group currently has over 40 volunteers—and continues growing.

WE'RE NOT IN NEBRASKA Mount students enjoy juggling about a dozen things at once. Maybe it’s because of how much you can learn from the things you do when you’re not in class. You’ll learn from the people you meet and the places you frequent. Our inclusive community and proximity to Manhattan are all part of a Mount education, an experience that changes the way you think and helps you realize what matters most to you.

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM YOU’RE IN NEW YORK. NYC is your playground. And your classroom. You’ll cheer on the Yankees...or their Beantown rivals. You’ll see Wicked or Jersey Boys (and at a much lower price than usual: Student Affairs’ programming makes tickets to events like Broadway shows, games, and concerts available at seriously discounted rates). And we’re just minutes away from the best of the City—that means museums, theaters, restaurants, shopping, Central Park, Madison Square Garden, Wall Street, the United Nations, and much more. Enthusiastic about art history? Explore the Met. Or, study sociology through the lens of the metropolis. And as life’s big questions (What am I going to do after graduation?) arise, answer them by taking advantage of the research and internship opportunities unique to our location. City culture is integrated into life on campus. Manhattan attracts writers, business leaders, politicians, artists, and musicians from all over the world, and many of them make

a stop here. In recent years, a range of influential industry leaders have spoken on campus, including Gabriela Isler, former Miss Universe, now active in the fight against human trafficking; Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States; Benigno Aquino, former President of the Philippines; and Ambassador Youssef Zada, the Consul General of Egypt in New York. We often host lectures, conferences, and other cultural events—and our dance and theater companies in residence, BalaSole and Red Monkey Theater Group, perform throughout the semester and even invite students to participate in their shows. Numerous programs and activities promote student learning, encourage a sense of community, and provide opportunities for personal development. Plus, Student Activities annually hosts Springfest—an outdoor festival held on campus during the Spring semester, with games, rides, music, and food—where we’ve welcomed performances by today’s top musicians and comedians.

EXPLORE THE WORLD: STUDY ABROAD The College of Mount Saint Vincent offers study abroad destinations that enable students to enhance their knowledge of other cultures, broaden intellectual horizons, and deepen their perspectives on their home country and the world. Study Italian or French in Rome and Paris, learn about Ecuadorian history and culture in Guayaquil, study literature and history in London or Dublin, or even forecast economic trends in Tokyo. Students are encouraged to live and learn in foreign countries to enhance their development as global citizens through a variety of semester-long and short-term programs. Studying abroad is one of the most beneficial experiences you’ll have while attending college. We’ll work together to find the best study abroad option for you.

SERVE AND LEARN AROUND THE WORLD Nearly every college student has an opportunity to study abroad, but College of Mount Saint Vincent students have an advantage: they can imbue their study abroad experiences with meaningful work. We offer the finest international study opportunities in the world—and whether you’re in the classroom or at a service internship, students are uniquely immersed in the cultures they are studying. Service learning allows students to change the world for the better. Students can explore the history and culture of the Andean Highlands, study the hill tribes and elephant camps of Thailand, help maintain the complex ecosystem in the Galapagos Islands, teach English or health concepts to poor and rural Cambodian youth, or build centers for refugees, among many other opportunities.

We recently unveiled our new dining hall, Hudson Heights, which features numerous dining options, and a large outdoor patio, where you can relax with friends. Additionally, a comprehensive study on student economic mobility conducted by UC Berkeley and the U.S. Department of the Treasury ranked the College third in the nation in social mobility among 578 selective public and private colleges and universities. It’s no surprise that the Mount continues to be a top performer as it has also placed among the best in social mobility, coming in at #15 on U.S. News and World Report’s first list measuring how well colleges serve low-income students. GET INVOLVED: PASSION IN ACTION We seek the development of the whole person, and that means giving you plenty of opportunities to explore your passions outside the classroom, as well as in it. A vibrant campus life is part of our mission. CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS We have more than 40 different clubs and organizations on campus. Whatever your interest—journalism, finance, creative writing, acting, art, dance, cultural awareness, athletics, community service, the environment, and more— there’s a club for you. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Mount graduates go on to become leaders in education, business, medicine, nursing, communication, and government. The strong sense of direction and purpose that carries them starts right here. There are many ways to hone your leadership skills. You can be an orientation leader or a resident assistant, join student government, take on a leadership role in your club, or play a bigger part as captain of an athletic team. 20

STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Student Government Association (SGA) is an actively functioning body of students representing the full-time undergraduate and graduate student populations. SGA promotes responsible self-governance through its Constitution and Bylaws. By representing students and coordinating student activities and social functions, SGA provides an opportunity for all students to become actively involved in the governance of the College. This involvement promotes the general welfare by developing the community and opening channels of communication.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD: ATHLETICS AT THE MOUNT The Department of Athletics and Recreation is committed to reflecting the values of excellence and achievement to which our institution aspires. THE MOUNT IS A MEMBER of the Skyline Conference and an NCAA Division III affiliate. We currently offer 15+ varsity sports and emphasize athletic participation as an integral part of the overall collegiate experience. We also offer many intramural and club sports, open to all members of our Dolphin student body.

The Department complements the College’s mission, emphasizing the holistic development of our students—we encourage honesty, integrity, teamwork, and discipline. We are dedicated to providing the support and resources that our students need to be successful in the classroom, in the arena of competition, in service to our community, and in their chosen profession.

FROM PASSION TO PROFESSION It’s a big world and Mount students are ready for it. Life after college begins while you’re still in college. You’ll do an internship, or two, to find out what you want to do, or what you don’t—which can be just as valuable. Grad school on your radar? No problem. There are plenty of people on campus to support you with the application process. The College’s Oxley Integrated Advising Program helps students appreciate their strengths and interests, understand the value and range of opportunities associated with them, and strategize how to translate what they love into a meaningful career.

“THE REASON I’VE HAD THE SUCCESS I’VE GAINED IN MY LIFE AT THIS point, or whatever you want to call it, has been directly because of my time at Mount Saint Vincent.” Those 163 characters could, hypothetically, fit in a tweet blasted out by alum Christopher Summo ’15. And while he didn’t actually send it out into cyberspace, we certainly would have given it a retweet. Majoring in communication during his time at the Mount, Chris had an original interest of pursuing a career as a sports broadcaster. But after taking countless classes with dedicated members of the Mount’s communication faculty—including Associate Professor Brad Crownover, Professor Vincent Fitzgerald, and Associate Professor Michelle Scollo— Chris found his passion for advertising. If it weren’t for the guidance and mentorship he received from those professors, Chris never would have found the confidence needed to step out of his comfort zone and launch his career.

After graduating, Chris dove head-first into the advertising sphere. He got his start at Resolution Media, a full-service social media advertising agency for high-growth, future-focused clients. Then, in the winter of 2019, Chris interviewed and was offered a position as a client account manager at none other than social media giant Twitter. Over the past two years, Chris has contributed to significant sales growth across a number of key financial services accounts for Twitter— prompting him to be promoted to a senior client account manager this past summer after only a year of work with the company. “My advice to any incoming college first-year students, particularly at Mount Saint Vincent, is to take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to you,” reflected Chris.

MALLORIE BOCACHICA ’10 Major: Mathematics and Psychology Concentration: Elementary Education M.S. in Special Education | City College Principal | Leadership Prep Canarsie Elementary Academy NEVER DID MALLORIE BOCACHICA ’10 think that, at only 12 years into her career in education, she’d be at the head of a robust and rigorous building of teachers and students. She’s leading the charge to change how students learn at a charter network called Uncommon Schools, an educational system consisting of 57 schools serving over 21,000 low-income students across the northeast. Mallorie considers herself both lucky and proud to have had the amazing opportunity to serve as principal of an Uncommon School—Leadership Prep Canarsie Elementary Academy in Brooklyn—for the past three (almost four!) years. It was easy for Mallorie to nail down her major as a firstyear student at the College—double majoring in math and psychology while enrolling in the Mount’s esteemed elementary education curriculum. Her four years of study were no joke— thinking back on it, Mallorie doesn’t remember how she had time to balance everything! But it prepared her to lead a classroom, and now a school, of her own—ready to take on new challenges at the drop of a hat.

Associate Professor of Teacher Education Mary Ellen Sullivan was a guiding force behind Mallorie’s early teaching career. Mallorie saw how Dr. Sullivan went out of her way to maintain positive relationships with each of the students in her cohorts, and it’s become one of Mallorie’s goals to replicate that care and concern Dr. Sullivan taught her. “Our practicum classes—where my peers in the Teacher Education Program came together to share our experiences in the field—really allowed me to begin to put theory into practice,” said Mallorie. “I was able to establish my individual pedagogy as a student teacher, and then I was given the tools to actually put it into action.” And Mallorie’s career only continues to blossom. But no matter where she finds herself, she knows that her heart will forever be in a classroom. “I’m a teacher first—always,” Mallorie affirmed. “Teaching will forever be my passion and I’m grateful to be able to play a small role in changing the lives of my students—one lesson at a time.”

Mallorie’s had a dedicated support system in place to help her achieve her goals, including guidance from professors, mentors, and past cooperating teachers from her time student teaching. 25
