Love Rings True… It’s your twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. You and your spouse are sitting in front of a warm fire, sharing a bottle of wine. As you reach for your glass, your wedding ring glints in the soft sparkle of light. As you remember the promises you made to each other all those years ago and think fondly of the children that form your family, you feel joy, simple and huge, flow from within you. Every time you look at your wedding ring, you know that you have something lovely and real, steady and strong. Wedding rings are so much more than the precious metal from which they are created. They are an everlasting reminder of the love shared and promises made between two people. Thus, it is important to choose the right rings that you can enjoy and cherish for a lifetime. Find the right jeweler for you. When shopping for wedding rings, you will most certainly have questions! Shop around and choose a jeweler that you feel comfortable with. The right jeweler will guide you through the process with openness and care, as well as provide you with ideas and suggestions, all with no pressure or obligation. The most important element is for you both to find rings that are absolutely perfect for you, rings that embody your inner spirit in precious metal. Start shopping for your wedding bands at least four months in advance of your wedding. This allows you plenty of time for adjustments and changes, just in case. Explore many design options. Today, there is a plethora of design options available for both ladies’ and gentlemen’s bands. Traditionally, women wear an engagement ring to show their betrothal, then add a wedding band on their wedding day. Many engagement rings are offered with a matching wedding band; however, you aren’t limited to only one wedding band option. Your jeweler will help you find the perfect wedding band that will add beauty and grace to your wedding set without taking away from the exquisiteness of your engagement ring.

10

www.idoido.org

Gentlemen’s wedding bands are offered in a wide array of precious and semi-precious metals with an abundance of style options in each. Whether you’re looking for something simple, flashy, rugged, trendy, or even camouflage, your jeweler will help you find the perfect wedding band that fits your budget and lifestyle. Ask your jeweler to show you a variety of different design options, including various precious metal options and styles of diamond settings. Some jewelers also offer custom designed wedding bands, as well as technology that allows you to see what your wedding band will look like before it is created. Ask about warranty and service. A reputable jeweler will offer a comprehensive warranty to you free of charge, as well as provide excellent service to you and your wedding rings for a lifetime. Wedding rings made of precious metals are durable, but not indestructible. Have your wedding rings checked a minimum of every six months to ensure that each facet stays in superior condition. Shopping for wedding rings is a fun and fulfilling process! Start by finding the right jeweler for you, and be sure to ask lots of questions so that you’re comfortable with every aspect. Wedding rings are constant and enduring, just like your love. From this day forward, every time you look at your wedding rings, you’ll be reminded of the depth of your love and the promises you’ll share for a lifetime.

Questions to ask the Jeweler: • When should we buy our wedding bands? • How do I insure my jewelry? • What are traditional wedding day gifts? • When do I need to solder my rings together? • Can I get my rings engraved? • How often should I have my rings checked out? • What is my warranty? • When should I purchase my wedding jewelry?

Favorite Wedding Décor Trends of 2013 When it comes to wedding décor, it is believed that less is more. Beautiful blooms combined with special touches here and there are all you need to complete a special look. Couples that deck their venue wall to wall with themed décor run this risk of looking tacky. With that said, here are some of the favorite trends from 2013. Burlap and lace: Just type these words into Pinterest and hundreds of boards dedicated to these mismatched fabrics will appear. This style is both feminine and rustic. Add a handful of mason jars and you’ve got yourself a timeless country chic affair. Chalkboards: It is very easy to go overboard with this trend, beware! Chalkboards are cheap, fun and add tons of flair. There are so many ways to work the boards into your event. Check out a tutorial on chalkboard lettering and get crafty with your bridal party. Vintage furniture: A couple of antique furniture pieces at a wedding always makes a warm statement. Whether your style is retro or whimsical, rent a vintage loveseat or a shabby chic table to tie your entire look together. Just two or three statement pieces (yes, kind of like jewelry!) are all you need. Bistro lighting: String lights make a space feel so intimate and magical. Incorporate them into your ceremony or reception décor, but keep in mind that string lights don’t work for every venue. Some ballrooms for example won’t let you hang anything from the ceiling. Save money and time by selecting a space already equipped like this romantic courtyard.

Dress It Up! Many couples need guidance on how to dress their wedding party to fit their wedding theme and we are here to help! For the rustic/vintage theme, wedding gowns with lace is perfection with this theme! If not lace, a simple silhouette with unique details gives a vintage feel as well! For bridesmaids gowns a shorter chiffon gown is perfect! With this theme it is fun to have the bridesmaids in different gowns in the same color or in the same gowns but in different complimentary colors! The flower girls can wear anything from a sundress to a big tutu! Mothers may want to choose a short gown chiffon or short lace gown in a color complimentary to the wedding colors. For the men a khaki suit option is great for the vintage theme or wearing the same suit pants and shirts with suspenders and ties or bow ties! Have them all wear the exact same pants and shirts to ensure that everything matches! Most formal wear places rent separates so there is no mismatched attire! Fathers can use the same concept and can match the mothers’ or another accent color in the wedding. With a modern themed wedding, the wedding gown should have a unique or couture looking fit! Sparkly beading or unique fabric would also be perfect! The accessories should show off the brides’ unique style! A unique veil, whether it’s a bird cage veil or a long dramatic veil works well with this theme. Floor length gowns work best for the bridesmaids that are unique in style or fit. If it is a summer wedding, bridesmaid gowns with a tailored pencil skirt will keep with the modern theme. Mothers can wear long or short satin gowns in a color that is complimentary to wedding colors. The flower girls dress should have some similarities to the wedding gown. The groom and his men can wear a fitted grey or black tuxedo with a colored bowtie or tie to coordinate with the wedding colors. Fathers could wear a classic black tuxedo with a black bowtie or tie. For a destination wedding on the beach the wedding gown can be flowy or a light-weight fitted style that is easy to move in. If the wedding gown has a train on it, it can easily be removed or bustled. Accessories should be simple and a silk flower or hairpiece is a great alternative to a veil. For the bridesmaids

20

www.idoido.org

a short flowy chiffon gown will be comfortable for all the ladies and will also look amazing. Mothers can wear something lightweight and flowy as well, in a complimentary color. If there is a flower girl she can wear anything light-weight to compliment the wedding colors. It is important to have the men wear the same thing whether it’s a linen suit or linen pants with a light-weight microfiber shirt with matching ties. Fathers should wear a different color microfiber shirt that coordinates with the wedding colors or with the mothers.

Consider when looking for Formal Wear: Dresses: • Make a look book • Determine your budget • Think about the wedding location • Consider the temperature •S cout dresses at retail stores - note what dresses work best with your body type; or visit with a custom dressmaker • Make your buy about eight months before the wedding Tuxedos: • Consider ALL the costs when choosing a tux shop • Don’t put the tuxedos to the bottom of the things to do list • Don’t be rushed into giving a deposit to formal wear shops at the Bridal Show •C hoose a formal wear shop that is close to the location of your ceremony for several different reasons •P roceed with caution when a store claims infallibility under the guise that all the tuxedos they rent are “in stock” •C hoose a formal wear provider who offers you a personal consultation by appointment • Don’t worry about your groomsmen coming from out of town • Don’t go to a “shop” where formal wear is a sideline • Don’t go crazy trying to visit every tux shop in person • Don’t Be Swayed By “Designer Names” • Enjoy The Experience!

Make an Impression! When does the first impression of your wedding happen? At the church? At the reception? Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision. An invitation can consist of several customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a self-addressed, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a save-the-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. They can be worded and arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion. You should integrate your wedding colors into your invitations to tie your theme together. There are a large variety of ink colors, type styles and paper to choose from to create a unique wedding ensemble. In designing a custom invitation, please allow enough time for the actual design, proofing, printing, assembling, addressing and mailing. Invitations should be mailed out six to eight weeks prior to your big day. Request RSVPs with the response card two to three weeks prior to the event. Remember to order at least 25 extra for last minute guest additions, mistakes and to have a couple for keepsakes.

Capturing Your Entire Day Wedding photography is an art. To master it requires being familiar with the minor details, timelines and traditions that are part of planning this special day. Having a realistic timeline is the key to experiencing a stress free wedding day and allowing all the special moments to be captured as they happen. Too many couples are convinced that hiring by the hour is the most economical way to hire a photographer, but in the long run, they truly want their entire day captured, which is why having your photographer available for the entire day is your best option. Your day does not start at the beginning of the ceremony and it doesn’t end just after the ceremony. To completely “Tell Your Story” you want to start with the getting ready photos and end when the final bouquet is tossed and all the special dances have taken place. Every wedding is different, and chances are slim that you will ever see any two wedding days go exactly as planned, but finding the right photographer for you and reviewing your timeline with your photographer will help make the day go smoothly and will help you perfectly capture your wedding memories for posterity. When interviewing your photographer, make sure and discuss what you think your timeline will be and see what experience they have with making sure your timeline expectations for your wedding day are realistic and not rushed. Experienced wedding photographers will give you realistic expectations for how long photos will take, depending on how many locations, how many people in your bridal party and how many family members you have to photograph. Another decision that can determine how much time your photos will take is whether or not you are having a first look prior to the ceremony or waiting to see each other for the first time as you walk down the aisle. This can impact the time before and after your ceremony that will need to be set aside for photos. Your photographer should stop photos 30 minutes prior to your ceremony. This allows you time to relax, freshen up and be hidden away as your guests arrive. All of these factor into when you will actually

38

www.idoido.org

start your photos for the day. Ask if they are familiar with your ceremony and/ or reception venues. If they haven’t photographed at these locations, ask if they will be visiting them prior to your wedding date. Setting up a time to visit your wedding site and/or reception venues with your photographer will make everyone feel comfortable when the day finally arrives. Once you’ve booked your photographer, consider having engagement photos taken. Not only is this a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera, a lot of couples use their engagement photos in other wedding details, i.e. wedding photo books or save-the-dates. Many photographers include an engagement session in their wedding photography packages. This is a great way for you to get to know your photographer and for them to get to know you. It’s a way for you to show who you are as a couple and be creative and just have a great time. Many couples look for engagement photo ideas on photographer’s websites, Facebook pages, Blogs and Pinterest. This also allows you to go over some of the potential poses you will do on your wedding day, which will help move things along and avoid any confusion when you are posing for photos. Your photographer will most likely be contacting you anywhere from 30-90 days prior to your wedding day, depending on your payment schedules and

contract. This is always a good time to catch up on any changes you may have made in the planning of your wedding and review a preliminary timeline of the day. Communication is key and the further ahead you can cover some items, the less you will have to worry about the week or day of the wedding. The wedding day is quickly approaching and your photographer will be contacting you within 1-2 weeks prior to your wedding day to review your timeline and confirm where and when they will start on your big day. This is your opportunity to discuss any specific requests for photos and any final changes in the timeline. Remember, the timeline is not written in stone, but your photographer will help make sure it goes smoothly so you can soon join your guests and celebrate. It is your special day and our job as photographers is to blend in, become part of the family for the day and capture all those special moments, even the ones you don’t see. Make sure you choose photographers who will “Tell Your Story”, not theirs. Finally, remember to take a deep breath, smile and enjoy your very special day and relax knowing that you have chosen the right photographer to capture these once in a lifetime moments!

Music Here are a few simple suggestions to guide you in the planning of your wedding music. How to find the right musician for your wedding • Word-of-mouth recommendations can provide you with great leads. • Get recommendations from local music stores. • Do an internet search for the type of musician you are looking for. • Search for online reviews of musicians you are interested in. • Ask your venue to provide you with ceremony and reception musicians that they recommend. • Select a few musicians to contact. Hear them perform live. Ask for sample demo recordings. Ask them for client references. Contact those references and ask for their opinion of the musician you are considering hiring. Questions to ask the musician • Does the musician provide a free consultation to help you plan your music? • Do they have a strict repertoire or are they willing to learn new songs? • Do they play the style of music you are looking for? • Are they willing to accompany vocalists or other instrumentalists if necessary? • Will they attend your wedding rehearsal if you want them to? • What backup plans can they offer if they are not able to perform for your wedding? • Do they provide you with a written contract? Find out the total cost to you including mileage, set up fees, rehearsal, practicing with other musicians, learning new music, etc. Once you find the musician that best represents your wishes and you want to proceed with hiring them, you will probably

50

www.idoido.org

be asked to provide a deposit and sign a contract. Finding music for your ceremony Your musician should be able to offer advice and provide you with a variety of music to choose from. Here are some free music resources to help you find wedding song ideas. • Do an internet search for online wedding music samples. • Your local or central library may have wedding music resources including sheet music and sound recordings. • Many wedding web sites have lists of ceremony and reception music. • You can listen to music samples at the major bookstores online and at your local retailer. • Local music stores have a wealth of sheet music and recordings and can offer wonderful advice. • Discount chain stores sell wedding sampler recordings as do card shops and wedding shops. Things you can do to help your musician • Tell your musician any special song requests that you have. It can sometimes take 4-8 weeks to special order music, so it is important to do this well in advance of your wedding. Your musician will appreciate some time to learn the music as well. • If you have a vocalist or an instrumentalist that needs accompaniment, be sure and let your musician know.

• If you are having a traditional wedding ceremony, you will want to confer with your musician regarding the following items. • Prelude Music. Your musician provides music to set the mood while the guests are being seated and waiting for the ceremony to begin. • Parents and Grandparents Song. Sometimes bridal couples want a special song played when the parents and grandparents are seated.

• Bridal Party Processional. This song is played when the bridal party walks in. • Bridal Processional. This song is played when the bride walks down the aisle. It can be a continuation of the bridal party processional or it can be a totally different piece of music. This music is usually grand and festive. • If you are having a Unity Candle and/or Rose Presentation, music is often performed. • Signing of the Wedding License. If this is part of the ceremony, music provides a nice background. • If you are having Communion or Mass, music is often played or sung. • Recessional. This music is played at the conclusion of the ceremony when the bride and groom make their exit. This music is usually bright and lively. • Postlude Music. Your musician provides music for your guests to enjoy while the guests are being ushered out. • If you are having a non-traditional ceremony, you will want to meet with your musician early in your planning stages, so that you and your musician will have time to locate and select the music that will reflect your style of wedding. • If you prefer using recorded music for your ceremony rather than hiring a musician, check that your wedding facility has adequate sound equipment available. Ask if a sound technician is available.

www.idoido.org

53

You’re almost done! There are just a few more details to cover. Does your musician need to provide his/her own instrument or is the instrument available at the wedding location? For example, if you hire a pianist, find out if there is a piano available and how much it costs to reserve. What is the sound quality of the instrument? How often is it tuned? Your musician should be taking care of all these details, but you’ll want to make sure that is the case. If a piano is not available, you may wish to rent one from a local music store or find out if your pianist will provide a portable piano. Some clergy and churches are selective as to the type of

54

www.idoido.org

music they allow, be sure and check this out with the person officiating at your wedding. Some facilities and churches have sound technicians, and some even require that you hire one for your event. You would want to hire a sound technician as soon as possible to insure his/her availability for your event. By following the above suggestions, you can enjoy your wedding day knowing that your musician will create a perfect musical setting for your wedding! Questions to ask your music provider: • Do you have my date open? • Have you done events at my ceremony and/or reception location before? If not, are you familiar with them? • How long have you been in business? • How many weddings have you done? How many do you do in an average weekend? • What sets you apart from your competition? • Are there any other services that you provide, such as lighting design? • How far in advance do I need to secure your services? • What is your pricing? Does this include setup and breakdown between ceremony and reception locations? • How much is the deposit and when is it due? When is the final payment due? • If the event lasts longer than scheduled, what are the overtime charges? • What is the continuous music charge? • When can I expect to receive my contract from you? • Are there any additional fees that could accrue that I am not taking into account? • What is your refund policy if for some reason I need to cancel or alter my date? • Do you carry liability insurance? • If I hire musicians for the ceremony and want them to play at the wedding rehearsal, what is the extra charge? • Can you assist me in choosing the music for my processional, recessional, Father-Daughter Dance, etc.? • How extensive is your music library or song list? What genres can you cover? Can I give you a specific list of songs I want or don’t want played? • Can you provide us with wireless mics for the ceremony? • Does any of your equipment require special electrical outlets that I need to inform my wedding site about? • What kind of space or stage do you require for the DJ or band? • How much time will you need for setup, sound check and breakdown on the day of the event?

Picking The Perfect Wedding Flowers Selecting flowers is one of the most essential steps in the wedding planning process. Next to the bride, the wedding flowers are one of the most photographed details of your wedding day. It is crucial to have wedding bouquets and centerpieces that fit both the style and theme of your perfect wedding day. Picking the right florist to design and create your dream bouquets and floral decorations a satisfying accomplishment on your wedding checklist if you follow these steps: • Ask for referrals. When a florist is highly recommended by another bride or photographer, you know they will do a fantastic job on your wedding. • Attend bridal expos. You can experience fresh, real-life creations as well as examine the quality of the florist’s design work. This will also allow you to form an impression about a florist regarding how they make you feel when you meet them in a room full of other brides. • Make an appointment. Book a time to sit with a florist and look at photos of their past creations, which will allow you to see their designs in close detail. Always ask to see pictures of work they have done and not stock photos out of books and off the internet. Are their arrangements unique and creative? This is also a great time to determine their knowledge of flowers and assess their wedding floral experience level. • Plan, plan, plan. Have some floral ideas in mind when you meet with your florist. Look at their Facebook page, Pinterest and webpages to get ideas. Bring pictures from magazines or the Internet that reflect your vision. Have some colors and flower choices in mind. If you’re unsure of what you want, an outstanding florist should be able to help you create that perfect combination of colors and flowers to make your wedding flowers a dream come true. • Pick your florist. Book a florist (by securing them with a deposit) that makes you feel at ease and comfortable. Find one who listens to your ideas, but has ideas and suggestions for you, as well. Select someone you really want to work with, not just someone who is available on your wedding day. Remember

60

www.idoido.org

it is more about your satisfaction than just the price. You cannot always compare price when you may not know what all comes with their quote. Find a florist who is just as excited about your flowers and wedding day as you are! Picking your bridal bouquet is an important start to a beautiful wedding day. Once the bride’s bouquet flowers are chosen, the rest of the wedding flowers, from the bridal-party flowers to the corsages and boutonnieres--will fall into place by incorporating the bouquet flowers throughout all of the wedding flowers. Once you’ve chosen your flowers, you’ll need to create the perfect ceremony site design plan. If you are having a traditional wedding, the aisle you walk down should represent elegance truly worthy of you as a bride. You need everything from gorgeous pew decorations to amazing altar pieces to make this a stunning vision. Finally, it’s time to design the reception site: this is your “Wow Factor.” You can make an impressive and beautifully elegant statement by having large floral centerpieces with multiple designs. These designs should utilize different sizes to break up the room’s space, ultimately giving the reception site the true beauty that every bride deserves at her wedding reception.

Questions to ask the florist: • Can you see photographs or live examples of past work? • When do you need a final count for table centerpieces? • Can you provide items such as vases or candelabras? • D o you know who will be creating your flowers? Be sure to get to know the person who will, so you can trust them. • H ow many weddings is the florist handling on the day or weekend of your wedding? • Can you recommend any seasonal flowers that would help keep cost down? • How much is it to secure my date? • When is the final balance due?

Questions to ask the florist:

• Do you deliver? Is there a fee? When would you be delivering the flowers or when would we need to pick them up?

Rent, Buy or Diy? Since your engagement (or since you were 5?) you’ve spent some time imagining your beautiful, flawless, budgetless wedding. While many couples have grand dreams for their day, tight budgets can quickly nix those big plans. But don’t go running for the $.99 tulle and crepe paper just yet. Thrifty doesn’t have to mean cheap, and with hundreds of weddings under our belt, we know the ins and outs of this game. Let’s talk about what you should rent, buy and DIY: Rent it: Linens- The patterns and textures of specialty linens make a big visual impact, but table linen can be a pricey item to invest in, leaving you with 15 identical pieces to find a home for when the wedding is over. These statement pieces are much more affordable to rent than buy. Ceiling Draping- Speaking of visual impact, professional draping can turn the most boring room into a fairytale ball, softening up your space. No matter where you need to cut to make it happen, draping is one of those items that should never be DIY’d. This element takes a high level of skill to be done correctly. To avoid ending up with large quantities of similar items, rent: • Sashes • Vases • Dishware • Cloth napkins • Votives Buy it: Wedding Cake- Whether you choose a 4-tier cake or a table of fresh pies, wedding “cakes” represent a significant time investment. While you might be capable of tackling this task any other day, a DIY wedding cake adds a considerable amount of stress to the days leading up to your wedding. Give yourself a break and select a simple, affordable design that you can accent with fresh flowers. Vaseware- While you likely won’t need 20 of the same vase,

68

www.idoido.org

it is nice to have a few arrangements in purchased vases to give to your attendants or other special friends and family at the end of the evening. This can get expensive, so purchase no more than 6, and rent coordinating glassware from a décor company. Buy items that you could potentially use later, such as: • Cake serving set • Small accent pieces DIY: Customized Details- DIY projects are a perfect way to add a personalized touch to your wedding. Unique guest books, place cards and wedding favors are the small pieces of your wedding that guests will remember, and keeping it DIY prevents the projects from becoming too pricey. Set-up- Chipping in for portions of the set-up can decrease the labor costs associated with your wedding. Perhaps you can learn to install your own chair covers or have friends and family set up the tables. A word of caution, though: if the schedule is tight, cut back in another area in order to hire additional help and prevent exhaustion among your family and friends. DIY projects to consider: • Tying your own sash ties • Custom photo display • Table Numbers • Flower girl basket For the couple on a budget, just remember cheaper is not always better. You can have the wedding of your dreams on a dime, just by knowing what to rent, buy, and DIY.

Questions to ask for decor or rentals: • Is the first visit a free consultation? • Ask for references as well as the decorator’s experience in the industry. • Ask if the decorator has any special deals or other ways to give you the best value for your money. • Ask for a “door quote,” which is the full amount you will pay, including all fees, before signing a contract. • Ask about the policy on deposits and refunds. • Are there any photos of similar weddings that may be emailed to you, or is there a portfolio available for you to look at? • Do you have delivery fees, set up/tear down fees or a damage deposit requirement? • What is the payment schedule?

Questions to ask for decor or ren

• Do you take care of renting items needed, or do we need to rent them?

Venues & Catering Your wedding day will be one of your life’s biggest events. Truly a special occasion to celebrate together with your family and friends. A lifetime memory you will remember with great delight. Remember to reserve the reception site well in advance of the wedding. Summertime is the high season for weddings while October and November are considered the off-season. Advance planning is paramount. What do you want your wedding day to be? The style is very important when you’re thinking about location. Will you want to be outside or inside? Will you have the service and reception in the same location? Location, location, location… As always location is of utmost importance and when it comes to your wedding day. Ultimately you should follow your heart and choose a place that best reflects your tastes as a couple. Find a place you and your friends and relatives can relax in and your wedding is sure to be a wonderful day. If you are having a church service in a separate location the reception must be convenient and easy to get to. That is especially important if guests are expected to find their own way to the reception venue. Start your research by contacting various reception venues starting with date availability and capacity availability for the number of guests you will likely be inviting. When you identify potential venues that can accommodate your date and guest list it’s time to set appointments for site tours. The very best way to reach your perfect venue location is to book a visit and have the wedding planner talk you through the facilities and to understand all of the venue’s capabilities for your reception. Take your time and make a connection. When you are reviewing reception venues it is important to decide how many people will attend. Will you send invitations to all friends and extended family resulting in a huge guest list or would you prefer an intimate wedding reception. Remember, your eventual choice of venue may affect the overall amount of anticipated rsvps. If you are planning a large wedding the venue size is of

78

www.idoido.org

course critical. Ask prospective venues what the capacity is and what flexibility there is on their capacity. Considering a themed wedding reception? Share your thoughts about your theme with all of your venue option wedding planners. They can assist with your concept and make your planning process less stressful and ultimately help you present your theme, meeting your expectations. Set a budget and stick to it. If a venue really captures your imagination but is beyond your budget look for ways to work with that venue to get to your budget. Ultimately, stick with your budget. Have a clear vision of what each venue offers. There are a number of key components to keep in mind when you have chosen your reception venue and are ready to book the site. • I s the initial payment a deposit or a rental charge? •W hat is the payment schedule for your reception? •W hat are the time parameters for your reception venue? •W hen is the venue available for decorating and how long can the reception last? • What are the venue capabilities for either a DJ or live music? •A re there unique photo opportunities? • Is there a parking lot, can it support your guest list and is it free? •A re there enough restrooms and restrooms for disabled guests? • Ask for the total amount to ensure there are no hidden costs. •H ow will be the placement of

dinner tables and guest seating be configured? • What are your options for hosted beverages? • What are the guest seating, salad service, dinner service and cake service time expectations? Read the contract closely and ensure that everything you want is included in the contract. These details can make your wedding planning a much more enjoyable task and save you many headaches later on. Take all the time necessary to identify possible venues and visiting your top venue options. Don’t be afraid to ask questions so you will know what you are getting for your money. Your lifetime memory should give you great delight.

A Honeymoon Near or Far‌ A honeymoon has been a long time tradition for many couples. It is meant to get away and enjoy each other as a new married couple. Many leave within a few days of their wedding day, jetting off on a plane to a dream destination or hitting the road to a local hot spot. Near or far, all that really matters is that you’re enjoying each other! For a Minnesota couple, your options are unlimited locally. When staying near, there are over 10,000 lakes and even more resorts. You can enjoy both adventure and romance. Minnesota resorts will offer hiking, biking, kayaking, and watersports, yet at the same time, you can find a local spot that offer romance packages. Remember a honeymoon is that once in a lifetime vacation. If the two of you imagine something further away possibly to a destination you have never been to but only dream to go, now is the perfect time to do so. Many resorts throughout the globe will cater to Honeymooners and sometimes even offer special amenities to help make your stay more memorable. With wedding planning sometimes comes stress and the with all the busyness of the event, a honeymoon sounds very exciting and relaxing to many. Just the thought of getting away for a few days or maybe even two weeks, may sound like paradise. No matter where the two of you want to go or what you want to experience, your options are unlimited. Here are three easy steps in getting your planning started. 1. Discuss. Sit down together and imagine your honeymoon together! Make a list of what is important, what your want to see or do. Also, talk about your budget. 2. Use a Travel Agent. For many of you this is your first vacation and your honeymoon is a once in a lifetime vacation, so why not leave it up to the experts. There are many travel agents the specialize in Destination Weddings and Honeymoon planning. 3. Have fun! Remember you are taking this trip to enjoy it together and that this is an exciting time in your life.

This is one of the most important vacations the two of you will take together, so make it memorable. Near or far, here are a few popular destinations: Near: Duluth/North Shore Door County, WI Stillwater Or, just about any “UP North cabin” Far: Hawaii St. Lucia Jamaica Mexico A Cruise No matter where your honeymoon destination is, all that really matters is the time spent enjoying one another. As Dr. Suess says. “Do you like them in the car? Do you like them near or far? Try them, try them -- you will see!”

Questions to ask yourself about the honeymoon: • Have you decided on a budget? • Have you decided on a destination? • Have you found a travel agent? • Do you need hotel reservations? • Do you need a passport? • Do you need airline, boat or train tickets? • Do you need car rental? • Do you need transportation to and from the airport?

Arrive Safe and "In Style" You have dreamed of, you have planned, you have booked, and now your “Big Day” is almost here. Have you decided how you are going to arrive “in-style” for the most anticipated day of your life? A limousine, vintage car, party bus, or a horse-drawn carriage, may be the ride for you! Many options are available; however, Limousines have become one of the most favored choices for wedding couples across the land. Whether your party is large or small, your style is elegant or relaxed, your budget is limited or extravagant; you have an array of choices at hand. As with any choice there are pros and cons that you need to think about before booking your wedding transportation. • Work with a “reputable” company when choosing your transportation. Check their BBB rating (Better Business Bureau). Proper Licensing, Insurance, and Driver Qualifications are important! Your “safety” should be foremost in your mind. • Remember “size” matters. Choose an option that is comfortable for you and your wedding party. Look at the broad shoulders/height of your groomsmen and the fullness of the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses. • Reserve as “early” as possible. If your heart is set on a particular limousine or option; make sure to get your signature on the dotted line for your date and time. However, don’t assume there is nothing out there if you want to book the week before. You may be surprised what is still available. • Letting “cost” be the deciding factor in determining what type of transportation you choose or what company you work with may not be the best idea. Sometimes what appears to be a great price turns into a disappointment in the end. Do your homework here, details matter! Certain package options including, split time, all day, or minimum hour time frames may be worth your consideration. (Remember

100

www.idoido.org

that the gratuity is usually an additional expense.) • Get a “written” confirmation sheet or contract. That way there is no misunderstanding as to when and where your transportation is needed. You may also want to re-confirm your reservation the week or so before your big day. Many companies welcome that and/ or choose to re-confirm with you. • “Understand” what you have reserved. Knowing what is included in your wedding package, Red Carpet Service, or what is customary with the company/vehicle you have chosen goes a long way in having a smooth ride. • How will the driver/chauffer be “dressed”? Most professional transportation companies have set attire for their personnel. Ask what your driver will be wearing. • Is “alcohol” included in the price? Many limousine companies provide non-alcoholic beverages along with the glassware set-up; however, MN State Statutes prohibit companies from providing alcoholic beverages. You may, however, bring in any type of alcoholic beverage that you wish. Some companies even offer the service of chilling and stocking your limo the day of your wedding. Just drop off your beverage choices a day or two before

the big event. Pearl Limousine offers this at no charge but make sure you ask your transportation provider about any additional service charge. Think about your “Wedding Guests” ride. If you are serving alcoholic beverages throughout your reception, it may be wise to provide a safe ride for your guests too. Some hotels and venues provide shuttle services but not all. Ask your transportation provider for their input. There are “economical” options available that could keep you from needless worry and/or liability. As you choose how you are going to ride on your very special day, keep in mind the little things. These “little things” are paramount to your special day! Be Safe and “Arrive In Style”!

Questions for your transportation provider: • What type of vehicle do I want? • W ho do I want in the vehicle? (What about parents/grandparents?) • How many hours will I need? • When should I reserve? • What is included? (Packages / Red Carpet Service) • Should I think about “Wedding Guest” Transportation?

Wedding Trends Why Not a Friday Wedding and Reception? Wedding receptions on Friday evenings are becoming more and more popular.. No more hair appointments at 6:00 a.m. ….. imagine being able to sleep in on your wedding day too. Friday evening weddings provide a time line that runs later in the day and allows you more time to accomplish those wedding day tasks. You can start the day with a brunch with your brides maids and groomsmen, perhaps even a round of golf or a day at the spa. Another added plus to a Friday wedding and reception leaves you the option to plan a Saturday BBQ or gift opening and leaves your guests with a more convenient travel schedule. Reception venues also typically offer reduced food and beverage minimums and room rental fees for your Friday evening celebration. Imagine the unique possibilities when you plan a Friday wedding and reception. Out with Rustic-In with 20’s Glamour! It is no secret that the “Rustic Wedding” was very popular last year and even into this year! Mason jars, burlap, barns, and DIY were among many popular items, however, 2013-14 has a new look to uphold! This year’s trends are seeming to show a 1920’s formal look and we are very excited! Out with Candy Bars- in with Creative Desserts! We have loved the dessert/candy bars, however, we are also loving the new “sweet” trends to come! From individual cakes, to popcorn bars, to ice cream trucks, creativity is IN. Brides are showing us that the possibilities are endless and are using desserts as a way to showcase their sweet tooth! Yum. Color, Color, Color! Brides are using color! Whether or not it is in their shoes, in their bouquet, or in their linens, color is here for 2013! While many are still upholding the traditional white bouquets, many brides are using pops of color to express their theme or style!

106

www.idoido.org

This is also being applied in their shoes, groom’s socks, and even in wedding decor! Color is a great way to brand your wedding and even showcase your favorite hues. Food for Thought Catering has skyrocketed in creativity over the past few years and continues on into the upcoming wedding trends! From mini-food, to food stations, to upscale displays, couples are getting very creative with the presentation of their food! Even late night snacks are coming back into trend! We are loving this because it is a fabulous way to set your wedding apart and show your creativity with food themes and flavors.

Look Fabulous on Your Big Day Tips for Beautiful Bridal Hair 1. Six months before the wedding, have a major consultation with your stylist of choice. Bring along the headpiece (or a picture if you do not have it in-hand yet) and the picture of the dress if possible. The more the stylist knows about the mood of the wedding, the better he or she can create the perfect hairstyle. 2. Do not skip the trial hair style, think of it as a “dress rehearsal” for your hair. There should actually be a “test run” before the wedding day. . 3. During the “test run,” walk around with the hairstyle you plan to wear to determine its comfort level and the longevity of your style. 4. Consider the time of day and type of wedding when choosing a style. Loose romantic styles are great for an outdoor or more casual wedding. For a more elegant wedding, consider a more sleek style that is a bit more polished looking. 5. Bring inspiration pictures with you for your trial run. It will save time with your stylist if you have an idea of what you want going into the practice appointment. 6. Do not have any chemical treatments the day of the wedding. That is not the time for surprises. 7. Hair color looks its best the first two weeks, so have your hair colored a week to two weeks before the wedding. But some colors take a few days to look picture perfect, so don’t try anything drastic a couple of days before the ceremony. 8. Hair that is too fine or over-conditioned does not style well, so deep conditioning treatments should not be used within four days of the wedding. For best styling results, shampoo hair lightly the day before the wedding and, if possible, do not wash hair the day of the wedding. Skin Care/Makeup Getting your skin in shape for your wedding requires far more than just slapping on some makeup on the big day. Fresh

112

www.idoido.org

and glowing skin takes months of preparation. Follow this easy-touse timeline to plan accordingly. One Year Before Wedding: Start a Skincare Regimen - If you don’t already, make sure you regularly wash and exfoliate your skin. Drink Up! - Make sure you drink eight glasses of water per day every day! It will keep you hydrated and your skin will look fresh and fabulous. Makeup Trial - Find a makeup artist near you. Then, schedule a trial to see his/her work first hand. Discuss how you’d like to look on your wedding day and experiment with different styles. Make sure you click with the makeup artist before hiring. A Few Months Before Wedding: Get Facials - Start visiting a local spa or esthetician for once-a-month facials. These will help clean your pores and rejuvenate your skin. Be Careful in the Sun - Always wear sunscreen - whether it’s a sunny day or not! It will keep your skin healthy for years to come. The Week Before Wedding: Eyebrow Waxing - Make sure you schedule your eyebrow grooming for at least a week before your wedding. Skin can get irritated from waxing, so make sure yours has time to heal. Spray Tan - Schedule your spray tan for a few days before your wedding

- not the day before in case of any not so fab results. Exfoliate before the spray tan so the results are applied evenly. The Night Before: Wash Off Your Makeup - Even if you partied hard at your rehearsal dinner, make sure you wash your face before you go to bed. You’ll want to start with a clean slate in the morning The Morning Of: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize- Apply moisturizer generously. It’s better to have dewy skin in photos, than flat, flaky skin. Use an eye cream that will help with puffy eyes and dark circles and place a cold pack on your eyes soaked in chamomile tea to calm puffiness down.
