Wedding Trends That You Want to Know. Really!!! You may recognize some of these trends from last year, and even years past. While some of the picks are new on the scene -- they certainly should stick around. Whatever your budget or style is, be confident there is a trend on the list that will work for your Big Day! Colors: 2015 brought us a lot of pinks, whites and creams, and 2016 is going to bring in those same colors but muted way down! That mono-chromatic look is going to be huge from winter weddings to kick off the year and straight through Fall of 2016. You will be seeing less pops of the bright pinks, and colors that are very close together. The bold colors that you likely haven’t really seen since 2013 when emerald was Pantone’s color of the year, will start making a comeback in late 2015, early 2016. By that time, couples are
going to be ready to move past the soft colors and let their colors pack a huge punch. Flowers: Peonies, hydrangea, spray roses, sweet peas and garden roses are going to be popular early in the year and during the spring. You will see a lot of these flowers in whites, and the brightest color will be a pale pink. While 2014 and 2015 put these flowers in clear vases, 2016 will bring in statement pieces in gold, silver and especially copper. Since the flowers are going to be so pale, the best way to make them stand out will be to place them in containers that are bold. Gold and silver will still be staples, but you’ll be seeing the use of copper and mercury glass more and more. Less of the bold wildflower variety in the summer and fall, and more classic colors. Baby breath continues to be very popular.

15
Ombre: You will also continue to see the trend of ombre bridesmaid dresses, except the colors will be very close together. Pale bridesmaid dresses were paired with bright pops of flowers in 2015, but 2016 will bring pale flowers and heavy greens like dusty miller. Copper Madness: Copper is going to make a surprising appearance as well, as couples try and find a way to make pale wedding still “pop”. Copper was very popular in the holiday decor, and some rental companies are even offering copper chairs for guests. This is a trend not seen in a long time and it works with every style of wedding from casual barn to upscale loft. Glitter: The shine and sparkle factor is way up in 2016 because there will be no competition in the color arena. For the brides that want their bridesmaids to carry those pale blooms, you will see sparkly gowns and some will be in head to toe glitter. Since not everyone looks amazing in sequin everything, brides will be able to put their maids into chiffon with touches of glitter anywhere from the shoes, to a belt to yes, even headpieces. Wedding Gowns: Off the shoulder gowns. A recent bridal fashion week has showcased dozens of off the shoulder gowns, and now that they are in stores, fashion forward brides are going to scoop them up. This has not been a popular look for quite a while now, but the way it was presented it was very classic and clean, sometimes with a whimsical look. With more and more brides stepping away from traditional weddings (i.e. bye bye churches) covering your shoulders at the ceremony is not a concern for many anymore, so this look is going to be embraced. No Ceremony: Speaking of non-traditional. There are getting to be many inquiries for “just a party”. People are waiting longer to get married, putting 16

their careers first and their love lives on hold. When “the one” is found, typically couples will live together first before the big day, and many aren’t interested in a formal ceremony. Sometimes couples want to just run down to city hall and make it official. They then want to plan a huge party where people can show up, dance, drink and not sit through a formal ceremony. Cocktail Receptions: Everyone’s favorite part of the wedding is the cocktail hour. The best food, lots of everything, and a chance to mix and
mingle sans toasts and formal dances. Many couples don’t want a formal sit down dinner for fear of the party coming to a halt. Instead, couples are now offering a cocktail reception where food is available all night and people can eat when they want instead of being told when to eat. Catering: Couples are all about the comfort food. For the couples looking to serve a buffet or a sit down dinner, many are looking to bring in outside caterers to create a rustic
menu. With rustic still being a huge trend, caterers are providing options to work well with the decor. This includes comfort food with a twist like mac and cheese with different types of cheeses and even soups with a hearty tomato base. Since many venues already offer in house catering, couples are taking more time to find their venues and wanting to have a tasting before putting down a deposit. If they are going for the more casual “non-banquet hall” feeling, they might luck out and be able to visit the restaurant ahead of their booking to try out the food.
Rustic Chic: Mason jars, burlap and lace are all still trendy and probably will be through 2016. But as this trend overwhelms the wedding population, couples are trying to find a way to make it unique. Instead of wildflowers and wooden signs, couples are trading them in for pink colored containers and big fluffy peonies. The burlap is being replaced by sparkly linens, and the bistro lights are coming down in favor of chandeliers. This trend was already expensive, but the price tag is going to be higher. Rentals will almost

17
always need to be brought in to these venues to make them look “less rustic”. Loft Spaces, Restaurants and Galleries: Even though couples are looking to get out of the traditional banquet hall spaces, not everyone loves a barn. Couples are turning to museums, restaurants and loft spaces for their event. This gives them the option to still create the wedding they want (with whatever caterer they want, or one that can work with them) but not be stuck on a farm in the middle of nowhere.
Food Trucks: Food has been very traditional for the past several decades: sit down or buffet. There is an overhaul being done as if everyone just noticed “wow, we have changed everything except for what we eat” at weddings. Food trucks are becoming a huge trend and it’s something that couples are just learning about, so it’s going to be a big deal in 2016 and beyond. Food trucks aren’t just limited to fried goodness, they include cupcake trucks for your guests to stop by as they leave (no more favors!!), mini-everything’s from cheesesteaks to sliders, tacos, falafel and more. There is no “wrong” here and couples are even using these instead of a formal dinner. Just make sure you have enough so that a line doesn’t build! For the couple that wants the “after party” without a separate room, separate DJ, etc. a food truck is a great way to send guests home. Rose Gold: This is a trend we see coming in hard for 2015 and 2016 and then disappearing so quickly that you will forget it was so trendy. Rose gold is one of the reasons we’re not fans of making your plans around things that are trendy. Rose gold is beautiful and you can incorporate it into your engagement ring, decor and total design. But we caution our clients to
18
www.idoido.org - Select Your Chosen Category or Wedding Consultants
only use this color if you truly are in love with it. You always want to look back at your pictures and see that your wedding was classic and not trendy. If you like rose gold, we recommend small touches such as the containers that your flowers will be held in, or the necklace that you wear. Remember, that engagement ring is for life!
Wedding Gown Accoutrements: The detachable train. As informal as many weddings are becoming, many of our brides still want the grand sweeping train. The problem with a long train is that it will need to be bustled, and many brides want to dance the night away in a gown that doesn’t weigh 100 pounds. A detachable train was seen all over the runway in the most recent bridal fashion week and it’s a great option. Women will see it like clipable hair extensions: no commitment, and you can take it off when you really want to let loose. It’s also like having two separate dresses because once you take the train off (as opposed to bustling it), it’s a completely different look. Added bonus? Bustling isn’t always 1-2-3. Entrances: It used to be that at the beginning of the reception, the newly married couple, their wedding party and parents would be introduced by the emcee before going into the first dance of the evening. Now, couples are opting to either only introduce themselves or going all out with a major entrance and choreographed dance. We are seeing couples work with choreographers to surprise their guests right at the start of their reception. While this was always seen at Sweet 16s and Mitzvahs, brides and grooms are bringing this trend to their own big day. Don’t be surprised if at the next wedding you attend, a full out dance starts as the entire party is introduced. Source of information: www.huffingtonpost.com/daniellerothweiler

Venues & Catering written by:
Brit Haskins – Classic Hall Event Center
Congratulations on your recent engagement! This will be an exciting journey as your prepare for your walk down the aisle. Choosing your caterer and reception site will be two of the biggest items you will want to figure out as soon as possible, since these usually book out a year or more in advance. During this time you will tour different venues and try different foods from multiple caterers until you find the right match for you. This is a big day for the both of you, so make sure not to settle for the first on that you see or try. Try not to limit yourself. Before you even meet with the caterer, or tour the venue make sure you have some key facts figured out. You will want to sit down and figure out a budget, and make sure to not stray from it. You’ll 26
want to know roughly how many guests you will be inviting, if you’re going to be planning a summer or winter wedding, are you flexible with your wedding date, and if you are going for a certain look or theme for your wedding. All of these items will help you narrow down which location and caterer will be best for you. It will also help open up new avenues and possibilities that you didn’t know were available. When planning your wedding, the reception venue will set the stage for your entire reception. It will provide you the wedding style you are looking for, and will help set the mood that you want for your guests. The right venue will make your night the one that everyone will remember for years to come. Trends for reception venues are changing
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Reception Venues, Caterers or Rehearsal Dinners
constantly. The more recent ones are chandeliers, accessibility- easy for all guests whether they are younger or older they can still participate, privacy – brides want to be the main event on their day and not have to share the facility with another group, beautiful architecture and modern updated dÊcor. Another common trend for weddings are ones that are based around a theme. Rustic, Vintage, Beach, Classic, Shabby Chic. No matter what theme you choose for your wedding, your reception venue should add to the overall look, not take away from your chosen theme. When you tour different venues make sure you have your list of your most important questions ready. This will be the time to ask. Depending on whether or not the venue you choose has an on-site caterer or not will determine if you need to find a caterer. If you do, you want to make sure to find the perfect caterer for you and your wedding. Some of the best ways to find caterers is through referrals from friends and family. This will also help you know if anyone had a bad experience with a certain caterer.
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Reception Venues, Caterers or Rehearsal Dinners
27
When calling around to make appointments with the different caterers, make sure they have a complimentary tasting for you. That way not only will you be able to get a taste of the meal you’re going to have at your wedding, you will also get to see how well the caterer prepares and displays their work. You will be able to tell during this time if the caterer is the right choice for you. Since you’ll be spending most of your wedding budget on the catering, aside from the venue, you want to make sure you have the top-notch caterer. Most catering costs will be presented to you as a “Per Person” charge. But, be careful because most the time the tax and gratuity are not added into this cost. Your actual per-person cost may be a lot more than originally anticipated. Make sure during your meeting with them you ask a bunch of questions, and always read through the contract before signing anything.

Questions to ask:
Some key points to ask about during your meeting with the caterer are: • What is your average price range? • What kind of fees do you add to the final bill? • Will you be working any other weddings on the same weekend, same day, or even at the same time as ours? • Will you provide the wait staff? • Do you have a license? Are you insured? • Can we speak to previous clients of yours? • Do you also do wedding cakes? Is there a cake-cutting fee? • Can you accommodate dietary restrictions? • Do we have to work off a preset menu or can you create a custom menu for our event? • How much do you charge for vendor meals? • Is there a different cost for children’s meals? • What do you do with the left-over food from our wedding? • What is your payment policy? • How much is required up-front to book our date? • What is your refund or cancellation policy? Some of the newer trends in food and drink are: Dessert Shooters, Grooms Cake, Late-night snacks, Meat Carving Stations, Dessert bar – cheesecake, wedding cake, cupcakes, ice cream sundaes, Butler passed hors d’oeuvres Here are questions to ask when touring a facility… • Is our wedding date available? What dates in our wedding month are available? • Can we bring in our own wedding vendors, or must we use your preferred vendors? • Do you provide in-house catering? • Who will be on-site to assist us on the day of the wedding? • What is your cancelation policy? • How much would you need up front to book our date? • What is the payment schedule? • How many guests can you accommodate? • Are we allowed to decorate the venue the day before? • Can the bridal party get ready at the venue? • Is there somewhere secure to store wedding gifts? • Are we able to have an on-site ceremony? • Are there any changes planned to the building before our wedding (renovations, painting, etc…)? • Do you provide the bar and bartenders for the evening? • What amenities come with our rental?

Take Your Time Booking the Right Wedding Professional written by:
Megan & Joey Freeman – Owners - Forever Yours Wedding Photography & Old School Photobooths
I have been married for over 5 years. I have learned a few things …… one of those lessons is just how important your wedding photos and video really are. My biggest regret from my wedding was not hiring a professional photographer. It is one of the main reasons I started doing wedding photography to make sure other couples did not end up with a finished product that I did. The “photographer” acted confident and I trusted that, instead of looking at her work. Right after the wedding I was so excited just to be married that I did not give my wedding photos or lack thereof, much thought. I printed a couple 4x6 photos, framed them and forgot about it. But just this past year I thought how cool would it be
to make myself a wedding album like I do for my couples. Reality hit….I had barely any useable images. They were out of focus, dark or too bright and just really awkward poses. In my mind I remember looking and feeling beautiful and loved on my wedding day but the photos do not show that. I had a family friend do a video for me but compared to the videos professional videographers can create, it does not compare at all! Why am I telling you my story? To save you from making the same mistake I did! Whether you plan your wedding for three weeks or three plus years, you are putting your heart, mind and hopes into that day. You pay for the food, the venue, the dress, flowers, DJ, photobooth, etc.

Yet why are people so quick to look for the “cheapest photographer” instead of the best? I am not saying you have to break the bank. There are many talented photographers and videographers at many different price points. Find a professional whose photos you love and whose videos you love, who you are excited to have there and trust to provide you with images and video you are proud of. I have done re-do photo sessions for couples who hired the “what a good deal” photographer. I am grateful they reached out to me and hired me to at least have a couple photos together that they can enjoy, but how disappointing. All the work that goes into the planning and you do not have video or photos to enjoy not to mention paying again for hair, makeup and flowers. I was happy to take their photos for them but felt their sadness as well. I could tell how upset they were with themselves that they were having to re-do photos instead of just enjoying photos from their wedding day. Moral of the story ….. do your research. Do not let price be your motivation. Let
40
your wedding day inspire your wedding photographer and videographer. It is important to book someone you trust. You have seen their images and videos. You understand exactly what is included in your package. You have met with them and gone over the wedding day plan so it all just flows. Now you can enjoy your wedding day with less stress knowing the professionals you hired have your best interest at heart and will deliver you the high quality images and video you were hoping for. Learn from others mistakes and take your time booking the right wedding professional.

Questions to Consider When Meeting with a Photographer or Videographer: • There are SO many options when picking a wedding photographer and videographer. How do you make sure you pick the professional that will best represent your day? • What exactly do your packages contain? (You want clear answers. Make sure you understand completely what you are getting.) • Do you have a certain style? If so how can you use it to customize it to our wedding day? • Do you have a back- up plan if you are unable to be there on the wedding day? • Can I see sample work? (Look closely. Do you enjoy their photos/video?) • Do you help make a timeline? (Your photographer & videographer should work together with you to make sure everything flows that day. A timeline is important!) • How confident are you with lighting? If it rains do you have the necessary equipment to still produce high quality images and video? (Don’t be fooled. On the wedding day there is not always going to be natural light available. It should not affect your photos/video) • Do you bring a second shooter, assistant to help? (They should.) • How do you back up the photos/video? What happens if I lose the Digital images or video? • Ask yourself, do you like them? (You will have your wedding professionals around you all day. You want them to be someone you enjoy being around.) • Why should we hire you? What can you bring to our wedding day?

Tips and Tricks for Finding the Perfect Wedding Rings! written by:
Erin Bitzan - Fashion Buyer, D.J. Bitzan Jewelers
1. Give yourselves enough time *With all the decisions required in planning a wedding, make sure you’re not rushed in choosing your wedding rings. After the cake has been eaten, the dress worn and boxed, your rings remain. Spend some time visiting with your local jeweler, look at options, try on different styles, and then decide. If you’re considering a custom ring, give yourself time to make sure the design is perfect. Typically 3-6 months before the wedding is sufficient, however, if you’re ready to check wedding rings off your planning list there’s no rule against deciding early! 2. Budget *Your wedding rings are a visible symbol of your union and they’re worth the investment! Make sure you factor 50
rings into the budget early enough in the planning process to set aside a comfortable amount. Prices will vary based on the metal, design, size and amount of diamonds or other precious stones. If choosing rings that last a lifetime is important, do some research about the right choice for you. Ask your jeweler what options might be best for you based on lifestyle and budget. Most jewelers will offer payment plans and financing for the wedding rings, just like for the engagement rings so you can spread out the cost if that makes sense in your budgeting. Wedding expenses add up quickly so don’t leave wedding rings last on the list. 3. Bring your inspiration *Completing your wedding set with the
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Jewelry
perfect wedding ring (or rings!) is the icing on the cake! With countless styles available, from stackable, mixed metals to blinged out eternity bands, there’s a style for every bride. Even in men’s wedding rings the options are endless! Peruse Pinterest or try on different designs until you find the perfect match. There is no “right” answer for every bride so don’t feel like you have to follow any rules choose rings that reflect your personal style! For the brides that want a seamless fit, ask your jeweler if your engagement ring comes with a matching wedding ring, or ask about custom designs if they don’t have the right ring available. Your jeweler can consult with you on what you desire and then create the ring based on your ideas. Bring in pictures or other inspiration so you can help illustrate your dream ring!

51
4. Consider lifestyle and the long term *You’ll most likely wear your rings every day so consider the wear and tear they’ll endure. Style is important, but also consider your lifestyle when choosing both men’s and women’s bands. If you’re super active and think you might be a little tough on your rings you might want to opt for heavier prongs or a channel design. For men’s rings learn about the characteristics of the options that appeal to you. Alternative metals are widely available and the price can be appealing, but they can’t be resized or easily removed in an emergency. Precious metals like gold and platinum can be more expensive but
52
may last longer, are sizable, and will allow for personalization like engraving and other customization. You want to invest in rings that will last a lifetime so make sure your jeweler provides a warranty to cover the routine care and maintenance your jewelry will require. Ask your jeweler the details of the warranty options so you find the right protection for you. Inquire about the costs to resize rings, repair or rebuild prongs and other routine services that will likely come up over the years. Making sure you’re covered for whatever comes is important. Whatever you choose, make sure it feels like a perfect fit - just like when you found “the one!”

Questions to ask the Jeweler: • When should we buy our wedding bands? • How do I insure my jewelry? • What are traditional wedding day gifts? • When do I need to solder my rings together? • Can I get my rings engraved? • How often should I have my rings checked out? • What is my warranty? • When should I purchase my wedding jewelry

Invitations & Cakes written by:
LeRae Rengel - Rengel Printing
When does the first impression of your wedding happen? At the church? At the reception? Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision. An invitation can consist of several 58
customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a self-addressed, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a savethe-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. They can be worded and arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion. You should integrate your wedding colors into your invitations to tie your theme together. There are a large variety of ink colors, type styles and paper to choose from to create a unique wedding ensemble. In designing a custom invitation, please allow enough time for the actual

design, proofing, printing, assembling, addressing and mailing. Invitations should be mailed out six to eight weeks prior to your big day. Request RSVPs with the response card two to three weeks prior to the event. Remember to order at least 25 extra for last minute guest additions, mistakes and to have a couple for keepsakes. Creating a custom wedding collection will truly be a personal reflection of your special day! They will create your love story from the first impression to “I Do.”
Cakes, Cakes, Cupcakes, Cupcakes and more
The wedding cake has its roots in ancient Rome, when a wheat or barley cake was broken over the bride’s head as a sign of good fortune. We love how couples have been reimagining it ever since! In the past few years, we’ve seen the birth of the dessert bar, the cupcake wedding cake, and the wedding donut. Here’s a couple of interesting ideas ……. Just about anything can inspire your wedding cake design -- the beautiful ornate molding in your ballroom venue, your joint love of modern design, or even the pattern from the china you just registered for. Here are 10 custom cake ideas. Your baker can help with the rest. Metallic Cakes Ruffled Cakes White-on-White Wedding Cakes Naked Cakes Painted Wedding Cakes

Lace Wedding Cakes Woodland Wedding Cakes Geometric Wedding Cakes Rosette Wedding Cakes Sugar Flower Bouquet Cakes And speaking of Naked Cakes. No this cake isn’t a flasher...it’s just unfrosted (or the frosting is between the tiers). It’s elegant, natural-looking, and so on trend. Top your naked cake off with some fresh flowers or fruit, and you’ve got a pictureperfect dessert. The cakes-a-plenty concept. Instead of a cake with tons of tiers, couples are opting for multiple cakes displayed on pretty cake stands. We suggest choosing a few flavors 60
if you go this route -- try a flavor that represents each of the newlyweds, plus a family recipe from each side. The best idea …… connect with the Central Minnesota Wedding Association’s cake experts. You will find them on page 63 of this 2016 Wedding Planner. Questions to ask about invitations: • Which type of invitation do you want? • Which enclosures do you need? • What do you want your invitations to say? • Which typestyle would you like to use? • Which ink color would you like to use? • Do you want to personalize with any additional designs? • Do you want to embellish with bows or ribbons? • How many wedding invitations do you need? • Will you be ordering Save the Dates? • Will you be ordering Thank You Cards? • What is your budget?
Questions to ask when considering a wedding cake or dessert... • How does the baker establish pricing? By the slice? Flavors and/or fillings? Decoration? • Does the baker provide a cake knife or server & is there a separate fee for that? • Will the baker deliver and set up the cake or will someone else need to pick it up? • Is there an additional delivery fee? • Does the baker offer display cakes and sheet cakes? If not a wedding cake, can the baker offer cupcakes, dessert tables, table cakes, dessert shooters, cheese cakes and more? • Are the cakes or desserts prepared fresh? • How soon before the wedding is the cake or dessert baked?

What’s your Style? written by:
Jen Mayers – Wedding & Tuxedo Connection
So you’re engaged! Now to start thinking about the gown(s). Where to begin? There are so many options these days; do you go with a sweetheart neckline, strapless, lace or color? Then, there are the bridesmaids and groomsmen to think of too. This can all become overwhelming and confusing for a bride. As a bride, you may already have an idea in mind of what you want to look like on your wedding day. Best advice when you go to your appointment is to be open-minded. Sometimes, what you have in mind doesn’t end up being the gown you find. It can often be easier to start by eliminating details you don’t like about gowns you try on; this way narrowing it down to find “the ONE” that has everything you have been looking
for! Remember, gowns can be modified by adding a beautiful belt or straps; these little details can change the whole look of a dress. Keep in mind, gowns can take up to 6 months to get shipped once ordered. A trend you will start seeing in bridal gowns is they are moving away from the strapless era. Although they still make strapless, a lot of gowns are being designed with illusion necklines detailed with lace or bead work. We are also seeing a few designers bringing back the ¾ sleeve and long sleeve gowns. With these gowns now having straps and sleeves, you will notice the beautiful and dramatic backs. So many choices to help you find YOUR style that will truly represent who you are on your wedding day! Now on to the bridal party. This is
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Dresses & Tuxedos
65
where you can get creative. We are seeing brides letting their attendants pick their own style of dress, so they are comfortable. When doing this, best advice is to go with the same designer if you want the same color for everyone, as each designer is different. The selection of bridesmaids’ gowns seems endless. There is lace, which is HOT right now, chiffon or satin. Do you go with a high-low, long, short, tea lengths? We are seeing a lot of these beautiful gowns also doubling as Mother of the Bride/Groom gowns too. Remember when ordering, gowns can take up to 14 weeks to get shipped. Make sure to get a swatch of the color so you can match them with the tuxedos! Now your groom and the rest of the bridal party need to get fitted for a tuxedo. Grey is still the hot trend for weddings; however you can’t beat a sharp, classic black tuxedo! Decide what is going to fit your theme. Are you having a rustic, destination or church wedding? Once you’ve decided on the color of the tuxedo, it’s time to decide who is wearing what color? Often, the groom will match his bride in white or ivory and the groomsmen match the bridal party’s color as well. The ushers and dads will usually be in an accent color or black. And if you have a little ring bearer, he will usually match the groom. Pocket squares and boutonnieres can add that little pop of color you may be looking for as well.

Silhouette Guide
Ball Gown – The Ball Gown is fitted at the bodice and has a waistline that leads to a full skirt. It compliments hourglass body types. A-Line – The A-Line is fitted at the bodice and angles out to the ground and resembles the outline of an ‘A’. This is the most universal silhouette because it tends to look great on every body type. Trumpet – The Trumpet hugs the hips and flows out in an A-line around the mid-thigh. It tastefully compliments a woman’s shape without being confining. Mermaid – The Mermaid does fit closely to the body to the knees. It then flares out to the hem. This style looks good on women with a straight shape. Sheath – The Sheath is usually semi-fitted from top to bottom with a straight skirt and has no waist. This will be flattering on many shapes. Goddess – The Goddess is a new shape that seamstresses refer to in describing any shape that flows freely from the bust line. In most cases, this Goddess has an empire waist so the dress will flow freely. It also flatters most body shapes.

Questions to consider when choosing wedding attire: Dresses: • Make a look book. • Determine your budget. • Think about the wedding location. • Consider the temperature. • Scout dresses at retail stores - note what dresses work best with your body type. • Make your buy about eight months before the wedding.
Tuxedos: • Consider ALL the costs when choosing a tux shop. • Don’t put the tuxedos to the bottom of the things to do list. • Don’t be rushed into giving a deposit to formal wear shops at the Bridal Show. • Choose a formal wear shop that is close to the location of your ceremony for several different reasons. • Proceed with caution when a store claims infallibility under the guise that all the tuxedos they rent are “in stock.” • Choose a formal wear provider who offers you a personal consultation by appointment. • Don’t worry about your groomsmen coming from out of town. • Don’t go crazy trying to visit every tux shop in person. • Don’t be swayed by “Designer Names.”
Enjoy the experience!

Planning an Outdoor Wedding? written by:
Britt Linn - Geyer Wedding & Event Rentals
As a young child you envisioned your wedding taking place in your home town or in your parent’s backyard. A celebration filled with dancing under the stars with all of your family and friends surrounding you can come true. In the Central Minnesota surrounding areas there are several rental companies who specialize in large outdoor weddings and canopies. There are certain steps that are required to follow when planning an outdoor wedding. Let’s walk through them. Step 1: Picking Your Location • Measuring out the space desired in order to accommodate the appropriate size of a canopy, and an accurate guest count will also help determine size needed. 76
Step 2: Contact Rental Company • Setting up a meeting with a rental company is very important. Establishing a solid and comfortable relationship with your rental company will make the entire process smooth and ensure all needs are met. • At this meeting they will be able to answer any and all questions you may have about your chosen location and all other services they provide. • Most rental companies book out anywhere between 1 year to 6 months prior to the wedding date, so setting up a meeting is very important. • Establishing a budget prior to your meeting will help determine the services that can be provided. Step 3: Items Needed • Canopy (obviously!) Size will vary upon

guest count. • Tables, chairs, linens • Lighting and flooring options • Draping and custom décor • Accessories for canopies to help protect from any weather conditions. • Food, beverage, photography, and music services. Step 4: Custom Décor • There are several decorating professionals and rental companies in the surrounding area that can provide custom décor needs for all canopies. Step 5: Wedding of Your Dreams • Letting all the wedding professionals take charge in helping plan and organize your wedding can ensure all your hopes and dreams come to life on your wedding day.

Questions to ask for décor or rentals: • Is the first visit a free consultation? • Ask for references as well as the decorator’s experience in the industry. • Ask if the decorator has any special deals or other ways to give you the best value for your money. • Ask for a “door quote,” which is the full amount you will pay, including all fees, before signing a contract. • Ask about the policy on deposits and refunds. • Are there any photos of similar weddings that may be emailed to you, or is there a portfolio available for you to look at? • Do you have delivery fees, set up/tear down fees or a damage deposit requirement? • What is the payment schedule?

Picking the Perfect Wedding Flowers
Selecting flowers is one of the most essential steps in the wedding planning process. Next to the bride, the wedding flowers are one of the most photographed details of your wedding day. It is crucial to have wedding bouquets and centerpieces that fit both the style and theme of your perfect wedding day. Picking the right florist to design and create your dream bouquets and floral decorations is a satisfying accomplishment on your wedding checklist if you follow these steps: • Ask for referrals. When a florist is highly recommended by another bride or photographer, you know they will do a fantastic job on your wedding. • Attend wedding expos. You can experience fresh, real-life creations as well as examine the quality of the florist’s design work. This will also allow you to form an impression about a florist regarding how they make you feel when
you meet them in a room full of other brides. • Make an appointment. Book a time to sit with a florist and look at photos of their past creations, which will allow you to see their designs in close detail. Always ask to see pictures of work they have done and not stock photos out of books and off the internet. Are their arrangements unique and creative? This is also a great time to determine their knowledge of flowers and assess their wedding floral experience level. • Detail Planning is Key. Have some floral ideas in mind when you meet with your florist. Look at their Facebook page, Pinterest and webpages to get ideas. Bring pictures from magazines or the Internet that reflect your vision. Have some colors and flower choices in mind. If you’re unsure of what you want, an outstanding florist should be able to help you create that perfect combination of

85
colors and flowers to make your wedding flowers a dream come true. • Pick your florist. Book a florist (by securing them with a deposit) that makes you feel at ease and comfortable. Find one who listens to your ideas, but has ideas and suggestions for you, as well. Select someone you really want to work with, not just someone who is available on your wedding day. Remember it is more about your satisfaction than just the price. You cannot always compare price when you may not know what all comes with their quote. Find a florist who is just as excited about your flowers and wedding day as you are! Picking your bridal bouquet is an important start to a beautiful wedding day. Once the bride’s bouquet flowers are chosen, the rest of the wedding flowers, from the bridal-party flowers to the corsages and boutonnieres—
86
will fall into place by incorporating the bouquet flowers throughout all of the wedding flowers. Once you’ve chosen your flowers, you’ll need to create the perfect ceremony site design plan. If you are having a traditional wedding, the aisle you walk down should represent elegance truly worthy of you as a bride. You need everything from gorgeous pew decorations to amazing altar pieces to make this a stunning vision. Finally, it’s time to design the reception site: this is your “Wow Factor.” You can make an impressive and beautifully elegant statement by having large floral centerpieces with multiple designs. These designs should utilize different sizes to break up the room’s space, ultimately giving the reception site the true beauty that every bride deserves at her wedding reception.

Questions to ask the Florist: • Can you see photographs or live examples of past work? • When do you need a final count for table centerpieces? • Can you provide items such as vases or candelabras? • Do you know who will be creating your flowers? Be sure to get to know the person who will, so you can trust them. • How many weddings is the florist handling on the day or weekend of your wedding? • Can you recommend any seasonal flowers that would help keep cost down? • How much is it to secure my date? • When is the final balance due? • Do you deliver? Is there a fee? When would you be delivering the flowers or when would we pick them up?

Music & Entertainment written by:
Sharon Planer – Pianist for Parties owner Larry Rowe – Impressions Mobile Music
What will your guests experience as they arrive at your wedding? Very likely...MUSIC! Whether your celebration is outdoors, at a place of worship, or at a venue, music will be setting the atmosphere. When planning your wedding, make sure your music complements the style and atmosphere you wish to create. Here are some suggestions that will help you accomplish this. Whether you are having live music or recorded music, the professionals you hire can make or break your wedding. Wouldn’t you love to have your guests rave about the musicians or DJ you hired? This doesn’t happen by accident. • Get word-of-mouth recommendations from venues that you visit. • Get word-of-mouth recommendations
from trusted friends. • G et recommendations from local music stores and music schools. • Do an internet search for the type of music professionals you are looking for. • S earch for online reviews of those professionals. • C ontact them and ask to hear them perform live. • A sk them for sample demo recordings. • A sk them for client references. Contact those references and ask for their opinion of the professional you are considering. • G o with your instincts. Does your wedding seem important to those you have contacted? Do they respond to you promptly and courteously? Are they excited about your wedding? Do they LISTEN to you?

91
Questions to ask your music professionals. • D o they provide a free consultation to help you plan your music? • H ow much experience do they have? I.e. How many weddings have they done? How many years performing? • D o they have a strict repertoire or are they willing to learn new songs? • D o they play the style of music you are looking for? • Are they willing to accompany vocalists or other instrumentalists if necessary? • Will they attend your wedding rehearsal if you want them to? • What backup plans can they offer if they are not able to perform for your wedding? • Do they provide you with a written contract? • Find out the total cost to you including mileage, set up fees, rehearsal, practicing with other musicians, learning new music, etc.
92
The music professionals you select will want to meet with you to plan your music. In preparation for this, feel free to communicate with them any ideas you have regarding your music. At your meeting, your music professionals will work with you to create a repertoire that reflects your style for the ceremony and reception. Be prepared to provide your input on music ideas as well as listen to your music professional’s suggestions. Things you can do to help your musicians. • I f you are having live music, tell your musicians any special song requests that you have. It can sometimes take 4-8 weeks to special order music, so it is important to do this well in advance of your wedding. Your musicians will appreciate some time to learn the music as well. • If you have a vocalist or another instrumentalist that needs accompaniment, be sure and let your musician know.
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment
If you are having a traditional wedding ceremony, you will want to confer with your music professionals regarding the following items. • Prelude Music. Music to set the mood while the guests are being seated and waiting for the ceremony to begin. • Parents and Grandparents Song. Sometimes couples want a special song played when the parents and grandparents are seated. • Wedding Party Processional. This song is played when the wedding party enters. • Processional. This song is played when the bride, groom or couple walks down the aisle. It can be a continuation of the wedding party processional or it can be a totally different piece of music. This music is usually grand and festive. For GLTB weddings, the brides, grooms or couples sometimes enter together or one after the other. • If you are having Unity Candle and/or Rose Presentation, music is often performed. • Signing of the Wedding License. If this is part of the ceremony, music provides a nice background. • If you are having Communion or Mass, music is often played or sung. • Recessional. This music is played at the conclusion of the ceremony when the couple makes their exit. This music is usually bright and lively. • Postlude Music. Your musician provides music for your guests to enjoy while the guests are being ushered out. If you are having a non-traditional ceremony, you will want to meet with your music professional early in your planning stages, so that you and they will have time to locate and select the music that will reflect your style of wedding.

There are many wonderful music options for your reception...solo instrumentalists, ensembles, bands, DJ’s, or a combination. Decide what atmosphere you wish to create for your cocktail time, your dinner and your after dinner or dance. Consider what type of instrumentation can create that atmosphere? Live music? A DJ? This is where actually hearing the musicians and DJ perform will give you insight into the best fit for your wedding. NOTE: If you prefer using recorded music for your ceremony or reception rather than hiring a music professional, check that your wedding facility has adequate sound equipment available. Ask if a sound technician is available. You’re almost done! There are just a few more details to cover. • Does your musician need to provide his/her own instrument or is the instrument available at the wedding location? For example, if you hire a pianist, find out if there is a piano available and how much it costs to reserve. What is the sound quality of the instrument? How often is it tuned? Your musician should be taking care of all these details, but you’ll want to make sure that is the case. If a piano is not available, you may wish to rent one from a local music store or find out if your pianist will provide a portable piano. • Some clergy and churches are selective as to the type of music they allow, be sure and check this out with the person officiating at your wedding. • Some facilities and churches have sound technicians, and some even require that you hire one for your event. You would want to hire a sound technician as soon as possible to insure his/her availability for your event. • Take the stress out of your music planning by hiring experienced 94
and talented music professionals that you can trust ... and ... ENJOY your wedding day!
Musical Choices for your Wedding Day
With so many choices for your wedding day from the colors of your wedding to the dessert you’ll be serving for your guests, you can easily become
overwhelmed with the entire planning process. First and foremost…enjoy the time as you prepare for what is likely the biggest party you’ll ever throw. If there is one area that you should spend the time doing your research and making sure you find the right fit for your wedding day, it is your entertainment. Many guests and newlyweds say what they remember most from a wedding is the entertainment. As each wedding is as unique as the couple themselves, make sure to find a company willing to listen to your needs, wants and desires for your wedding day. If you are having your wedding ceremony outside of a church; start by envisioning the music and sound
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment
needs for your wedding ceremony. Your ceremony will contain four main components: Prelude, Processional, Entrance of the Bride, and Recessional. Often overlooked is ensuring all of your guests can hear the “I Do’s”. Make sure to ask what your entertainment vendor will be able to provide to ensure your guests are assured a memorable experience. You’ve now found the company you want to go with. Congratulations on another thing to check off your list as you prepare for your wedding day! As you continue to create your wedding experience for you and your guests, make sure to add your personal touches throughout the venue/night. From showing off your wedding cake to creating an ambiance throughout the venue with uplighting, there are still many areas that DJ entertainment companies can continue to enhance on your special day. Pin spotting is a great way to enhance particular areas of your venue that you want to accentuate. Maybe it’s the gift table or to show off the beautiful cake that you spent plenty of time taste testing and making sure it’s the perfect one for you. Pin spotting a cake may also help the photographer create the additional light necessary to make your pictures stand out that much more. Many newlyweds want to show a slide show of them growing up and also pictures of them growing together. This is a great way to show your guests your history. Typically, this can be played during social hour or during dinner. If you do a service like this, some companies may have the technology to then have music videos played throughout the night. What better way to add a personal touch like no other than having a personalized monogram. A personalized monogram can include your wedding date and names and can be created in many different styles. Popular areas to
shine your monogram include above the head table or on the dance floor. By far, the most popular add-on we see is uplighting. Uplighting can add a visual impact throughout your reception hall or outside around a building. Your imagination is the limit. Uplighting is the most affordable way to decorate your reception venue and create an ambiance unique to your event. By placing lighting fixtures on the ground and focusing them upward, uplighting can add color and depth to an otherwise boring wall or column. It also adds energy and vibrancy to your photos! As you can see, there are many options to make your wedding uniquely yours. From the time your first guest arrives at your ceremony to the last dance of the evening. A DJ can enhance your wedding experience through sound, music and lights. Don’t be afraid to create a space that will leave your guests amazed of your visual design. With today’s technology, your options are seemingly unlimited. Don’t let anything hold you back as you prepare for one of

the most important days of your life… your wedding day!! While researching your entertainment company, there are some questions you should be asking each prospective vendor for your wedding reception: • Is our wedding date available? Pretty obvious; however, some of the best DJs book up out to two years in advance. • How long have you been in business? How many weddings have you done? Experience…experience… experience. You want someone that has played on a wide variety of dance floors. • What is your backup plan for unforeseen issues that could arise? Do they have backup equipment, cords or even a DJ to fill in if necessary? Life happens and they should always be prepared. • Will you be the DJ at our wedding? If not, can I meet/talk to my DJ prior to our wedding date? Are they a single system company or do they have multiple DJ’s? • Are you part of any professional organizations? Such as Central Minnesota Wedding Association!! Companies that continue to work on networking and growing their business
96
tend to take more pride in the product they put out. • Do you have any recent reviews? What better way to get a feel for an entertainer/DJ than from recent reviews. • How big is your music database? If you don’t have a song requested, what is your plan to get it? You may only need 150-200 songs for the entire night, but if you allow the DJ to take requests, he should be prepared with a library of over 20,000 songs. Make sure they legally download their music. Pirated music does sound different when played at a higher volume. • Have you done events at our wedding venue? Some venues may have hidden surprises and your entertainment company should be properly prepared. • Are there any additional services that you provide, such as up-lighting, slide shows, pin spotting or a photo booth? Goes back to understanding and helping create your vision for your wedding day. • What sets you apart from your competition? When it’s all said and done, make sure you’re comfortable with who you invite/hire to be a part of one of the happiest days of your life… your wedding day!

Questions to ask your music provider: • Do you have my date open? • Have you done events at my ceremony and/or reception location before? If not, are you familiar with them? • How long have you been in business? • How many weddings have you done? How many do you do in an average weekend? • What sets you apart from your competition? • Are there any other services that you provide, such as lighting design? • How far in advance do I need to secure your services? • What is your pricing? Does this include setup and breakdown between ceremony and reception locations? • How much is the deposit and when is it due? When is the final payment due? • If the event lasts longer than scheduled, what are the overtime charges? • What is the continuous music charge? • When can I expect to receive my contract from you? • Are there any additional fees that could accrue that I am not taking into account? • What is your refund policy if for some reason I need to cancel or alter my date? • Do you carry liability insurance? • If I hire musicians for the ceremony and want them to play at the wedding rehearsal, what is the extra charge? • Can you assist me in choosing the music for my processional, recessional, Father-Daughter Dance, etc.? • How extensive is your music library or song list? What genres can you cover? Can I give you a specific list of songs I want or don’t want played? • Can you provide us with wireless mics for the ceremony? • Does any of your equipment require special electrical outlets that I need to inform my wedding site about? • What kind of space or stage do you require for the DJ or band? • How much time will you need for setup, sound check and breakdown on the day of the event?

Whether you are choosing a limousine, a vintage car, a bus, or a horse-drawn carriage there are many options available to you. Limousines and charter buses have grown in popularity in recent years. Wedding couples have been making transportation arrangements in order to keep their wedding party together throughout the day; from the ever popular church or park to the reception to the all-day package that is open to the couples every whim. Wedding guest transportation also continues to be a growing trend. Whether your party is large or small,
your style is elegant or relaxed, your budget is limited or extravagant the following information will help direct you down the path to trouble free transportation arrangements. • Work with a “reputable” company when choosing your transportation. Check their BBB rating (Better Business Bureau). Proper Licensing, Insurance, and Driver Qualifications are important! Your “safety” should be foremost in your mind. • Chose an appropriate “size” vehicle for your needs. Comfort should be paramount! Note the broad shoulders/height of your groomsmen and the fullness of the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses. • Reserve as “early” as possible. If your heart is set on a particular limou-

sine or option; make sure to get your signature on the dotted line for your date and time. However, don’t assume there is nothing out there if you want to book the week before. You may be surprised what is still available. • Letting “cost” be the deciding factor in determining what type of transportation you choose or what company you work with may not be the best idea. Sometimes what appears to be a great price turns into a disappointment in the end. Do your homework, details matter! Certain package options including, split time, all day, or minimum hour time frames may be worth your consideration. (Remember that the gratuity is usually an additional expense.) • Get a “written” confirmation sheet or contract. That way there is no misunderstanding as to when and where your transportation is expected. • “Understand” what you have reserved. Knowing what is included in your wedding package, Red Carpet Service, or what is customary goes a long way in you having a smooth ride. Remember, even though you are paying for the vehicle, any illegal behavior/activity is still illegal and prohibited. • How will the driver/chauffer be “dressed”? Most professional transportation companies have set attire for their personnel. Ask what your driver will be wearing. • Is “alcohol” included in the price? Limousine and charter companies may provide non-alcoholic beverages along with the glassware set up, however, MN State Statues prohibits companies from providing alcoholic beverages. Check with your provider as to what type, if any, alcoholic beverages may be brought into the transportation choice you have made. • As mentioned above “Wedding Guests” transportation is a growing trend. If you are serving alcoholic bev106
erages throughout your reception, it may be wise to provide a safe ride for your guests too. Some hotels and venues provide shuttle services but not all. Ask your transportation provider for their input. There are “economical” options available that could keep you from needless worry and/or liability. Whether you have chosen a limousine, a bus, or a buggy; chosen a full day package or just a ride from the church/ park to the reception, you can make these reservations at any time. Just don’t forget to “Arrive in Style”!

Questions for your Transportation Provider: • What type of vehicle do I want? • Who do I want in the vehicle? (Options for parents/grandparents?) • How many hours will I need? • When should I reserve? • What is included? (Packages / Red Carpet Service) • Should I think about “Wedding Guest” Transportation?

You are planning a wedding. So much to do! But if you’ve already cultivated a relationship with a full service salon, you are far ahead of those who haven’t. You are already enjoying the talents of professional stylists and technicians you know and who know you. You’ve already booked your wedding and pre-wedding salon services. You are ready to relax and enjoy the prelude to your vows. while others are going to need to do some homework. If you need to do homework, start with the Internet, checking out full service salons that market themselves through social media. Websites, Facebook, Google, and even Pinterest provide easy and quick access to the information you need. Some salons even have coordinators for their wedding related 112
services. But if you’ve already set your wedding date, you’ll need to choose from only those salons still available to accommodate your wedding party on your wedding date. Sometimes salons are booked for weddings a full year in advance. Schedule times to meet the stylists and tour the salons on your short list. Prior to these appointments, ask the members of your wedding party to view each salon’s website and note the prices of individual services as well as possible packages and specials. Determine ahead of time who will be financially responsible for these investments. Ask each member of the wedding party to list what services he or she wants on the wedding day itself and/or in the days, weeks, and/or months prior

Drinking plenty of water, eating healthful foods, exercising regularly, and getting plenty of sleep do wonders for both your skin and your stamina. Your esthetician can recommend products specifically for your skin type, and there’s nothing like a facial to set your skin aglow. If you have troubled skin, schedule a series of cor-

and styled whether your wedding is nigh or not. A regular rendezvous with your stylist tells your intended spouse that looking and feeling your best is an important aspect of who you are together. But, back to the wedding. If you’re dreaming of an updo which may include braids, curls, and extensions, schedule a consultation and/or a preliminary styling appointment. In choosing how to style your hair, you and your stylist will consider the shape of your face, the accessories you want to use, the time of year, and the theme of the wedding. Add your makeup trial at this time too, and be sure to communicate to your stylist your preference for subtle or dramatic and to what degree. When you and your stylist have accomplished a look you are completely happy with, take plenty of pictures and be sure to note each makeup item used. You and your stylist will use the photos and notes to accurately recreate your look on the day of the wedding. Having

Questions to Ask When Choosing Your Hair & Makeup Professional: • Can I see a portfolio of your work? • How many weddings have you done? • What is that total cost and what does it include? (Trial run, day of, extra costs?) • What are your reservation and cancellation policies? • Can you accommodate my bridesmaids as well? • Do you have group rates? • Do you have experience with my skin type? • What do you recommend for my hair and skincare regimen prior to my wedding? • What does trial makeup and hair entail? • What’s the length of time for your services? • What do I bring with me to the trial? • Where will hair/makeup take place? Do you provide on location services? • What items do I need to bring with me on the day of my wedding? • Will my hair/makeup stay fresh all day? What do I need to do to touch up if necessary? • How far in advance should I book my appointment? Tipping Guide: • Make-up Artist and Hair Stylist: 10-20% of the total bill.

The Experience is what creates the Memories... written by:
Nichole Winter – Destination Vacation
A honeymoon has been a long time tradition for many couples. It is meant to get away and enjoy each other as a newly married couple. Most couples take this time to make it a special and romantic time just for the two of them, recognizing that this is a once in a life time vacation. With pre-wedding planning can come busyness and stress. A honeymoon sounds dreamy and a perfect opportunity to enjoy quality time together. Just the thought of getting away for a few days or maybe even up to two weeks sounds like paradise. The first step in planning your honeymoon is discussing together. Naturally for an engaged couple their conversations gravitate towards the actual destination. This can be a great place to start 120
especially if there has been a dream destination in mind. However, for many couples this is the biggest vacation they are about to take or maybe this is their first time leaving the country (if that is what you desire). Rather than focus on the actual destination start with what you want to experience. When discussing ask each other this. . . . . . Imagine yourself on your honeymoon, what do you see yourself enjoying or doing together? Make a list of 3-5 things and compare each other’s list. A few common answers are: • Relaxing Together • Enjoying Tropical Weather • Couples Massage at a Spa •T rying a New Activity! I hear a lot
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Travel Agencies
of Zip Lining! • Being Spoiled • Wanting it Romantic • For the Adventurous; Hiking, Biking & Diving Once you start imagining your honeymoon this can blend together what the two of you want to enjoy together. Your second step would be to reach out to a Travel Agent. Find one that is a Honeymoon and Destination Wedding specialist. Let them hear how you imagine your honeymoon. From there your expert can narrow down not only the destination but the actual resort and help you plan those experiences you desire to enjoy. Who knows, they may
bring up a few activities you have not thought of, such as setting up a private romantic dinner on the beach. There is nothing more exciting than painting a picture to a couple of how they will enjoy their days in paradise. Your travel agent can also help you find that budget you are comfortable with. Last step is to ENJOY because truly that is what your honeymoon is all about. Having great discussions and a travel professional on your side you will be ready to relax and enjoy a vacation of a life time. That is the entire point of a honeymoon! Remember it is your experiences that will create the unforgettable memories.
