Wedding Trends Timeless ….No. Fun & Popular…Yes! Why Not.

Each year event planners, Pinterest enthusiasts, brides and even grooms try to think of unique ideas that would make their wedding better than the last 10 they have been to. Weddings tend to get the creative juices flowing for all types of personalities, as every bride strives to become the new David Tutera. From the good ole days of throwing rice

Sparklers Think back to as far back as you can and tell me that you weren’t absolutely amazed the instant a sparkler was lit. If you weren’t holding one, you had to have one. If you were, your smile likely went ear to ear and you were filled with joy. Everyone still has that child in them and sparklers are sure to ignite the little child

at the couple as they walk down the church steps, to the modern days where flying white doves seem more apropos, the wedding industry is heading in a great direction. Here is a list of the items that every bride will undoubtedly be typing in their search bar as they plan their upcoming wedding:

in you. Have your bridal party hold them as you march into your reception room and your guests will almost certainly get that “little child” feeling as well. (Make sure you buy the smokeless ones, you definitely don’t want the firemen to show up! Outdoors of course.)

Photo booths I know, you’re reading this and saying, duh I know. Let’s face it; photo booths are becoming almost as vital to a wedding as the cake! There are so many cool photo booths coming out such as Flip Books, Slow Motion Booths, Social Media booths, and others. Caution: There are many companies claiming they are photo booth companies and send out a camera on a tripod with wires hanging out to a printer. Make sure to do your research and don’t always opt for the cheapest company. Sneakers From Jordan’s, to Converse to even Gucci and Christian Louboutins, hot kicks are IN and more so now than ever. Pair those with some funky socks and the pictures that follow will certainly be priceless. Shoes are an excellent way for anyone to express themselves but when you pair them with a wedding dress and a sharp tuxedo, the whole ensemble becomes complete. Not only does it look super cool, but it’s a comfortable alternative that won’t leave you with tired feet. Just ask any bride who’s tried to walk in heels all day. Don’t forget to add some cool little sayings on the bottom. The First Dance on Clouds Oh, the infamous saying, “I’m on Cloud 9” -meaning extremely happy, blissful, and ecstatic! Not only does the first dance on clouds look unbelievable in pictures but it’s also symbolic of the reason you’re getting married. Doesn’t your DJ have a ‘fog machine?’ #Instagram On March 26, 2014, Instagram surpassed 200 million active users. Chances are you and everyone else at your wedding has one, and if you don’t today, you’ll probably have one sooner or later. With that being said, innovators in the business have been creating Instagram print stations as well as slide show presenters. Some great companies offer live Instagram feeds which will pull up (in-real time) all the photos being uploaded via your own custom 16

hashtag. This makes for instant gratification as well an interactive touch between your guests and the display screens at your wedding. The only drawback is that pictures must be public. Lightscaping Not only is lighting essential in making your wedding venue look unbelievable, but it also illuminates all of the decor that you spent countless hours (and money) planning to create. Lighting makes a difference and this is exactly why you see lots of venues installing it. With lightscaping, different patterns can transform the look of your venue and give it texture. It will bring life to the walls and will bring a dimension that you barely see at weddings. Rose petals, branches, snowflakes, and basically whatever you can think of can be elaborately lit throughout the walls of your venue.

Questions Questions for the Officiant:

• Are there any documents you should bring to your first meeting? • Does the officiant or church have any special rules or restrictions? • Does the officiant require premarital counseling, either from the officiant or elsewhere? • Does the officiant charge a ceremony fee? How much? • When will the rehearsal be? • If you are planning the ceremony at the church of a pastor, find out what the church provides and what you need to provide.

q A Unique Reception Venue Requires a Caterer ….

Hire a Professional.

When your reception venue is unique in style or location you’ll want to hire a professional caterer. Remember that it’s not only the food you’ll be serving but the beverages need special consideration and planning too. These details are always best left to professionals. Your options can be basic, theme oriented or extraordinarily unique. A professional caterer will bring your dreams to life and your guests will never forget how special the reception menu was. Ask these questions when you are interviewing caterers: • How long have you been a caterer? • Can you share references? • Do you offer a tasting of our menu choices? • Is the menu prepared on-site? • Do you offer various food service styles? Buffet, Food Stations, Plated Meals, Family Style Service. • Have you catered receptions at our chosen venue? • Is the cost per guest all inclusive or is the service charge and sales tax additional? • Does your service include the wait staff and what is their required apparel for our reception?

Questions Questions to ask for the reception location: • How much will it cost to use this site? • What’s the payment plan? • W ill there be another party before or after yours? If so, will there be enough time to decorate and take down? • W ill you be required to leave everything “as is” or will you have the flexibility to decorate to suit your purposes? • Are candles allowed? What is the candle policy? • W hat will the location provide and what will you need to provide or rent?

• D oes the location work with their own caterer or will you be able to hire your own?

ST. CLOUD

• W ill the person you’ve made the arrangements with from the location be there to supervise during the event?

q Capturing Your Wedding Day

Professional. Why is that word SO important when booking your wedding photography?! Why can’t your neighbor’s son who just got a DSLR camera two weeks ago just shoot your wedding for free!? It’s simple really. More important than a nice camera or lens is something you can’t buy. Experience. Weddings are amazingly beautiful, inspiring days! But as a photographer they can

Yes, I know all photographers have to start somewhere, but I recommend not having one start on your wedding day! You want images you will be proud to hang on your walls, to show off to friends and family, to cherish as you grow into your life together. With wedding photography you get one chance to get it right, that’s it, when the day is done the last thing you want to be worrying about is “did my

also be challenging, stressful and ever changing. You have to be able to quickly adapt. From lighting issues, to changes in the weather, you have to be able to handle whatever a wedding day may throw at you. All the classes we do, all the videos we watch nothing compares to actually photographing a wedding.

photographer know what they were doing ?” “Did they get good images?” Hiring a professional Wedding photographer is an investment, but it is one worth making, to be able to enjoy your wedding day and know you’re in good hands is priceless. Ask around, look at photographers images, don’t just go off price, go off

quality, you’ll be happy you did! The same goes for photo booths. There seems to be more and more photo booth companies popping up, just be sure to really be looking into who you are booking. Make sure you only rent a photo booth that uses professional paper and dye-sub printers. Dye-sub printers are so important! The photo-booth strip will be instantly dry when it comes out of the photo booth. You can actually stick it in a glass of water and it will not smear or smudge, it will be a keepsake you and your guests can treasure. Imagine you go with the “cheaper” company who uses inkjet printers; your guest gets their photo strip, hits the dance floor only to have their photo strip smudge in their pockets or in their hand! Not good…. What we always recommend when booking your photo booth is to request a sample print, dip it in a glass of water. Did it smudge? Or does it just dry off good as new? Most photo booth companies are happy to mail you a sample strip if you request it. Find Wedding Vendors that fit you. You are unique and so is your wedding day. Find a photographer that is going to reflect your style. Find a DJ that will make your reception everything you hoped it would be. Find a photo booth that will entertain your guests with professionalism and quality. Find a wedding planner/videographer/florist/caterer and venue that reflect you. You will have a lot of people “suggesting” the “best” thing to do on your wedding day, but at the end of the day, it is your day! Do what will make you happy, so you can look back years later and reflect on all the fun you had and love you felt, not all the stress you had trying to make everyone else happy. Start your planning early, setting little goals to have all your planning done in a timely matter. For more wedding planning tips check out the Central Minnesota Wedding Association website.

Questions Questions to ask yourself about the Photographer/Videographer: • Do you like his or her samples of work? • What’s their favorite shooting style? • Do you like a wedding album they’ve created? • Would you want yours to look like this? • Can you give your photographer a shot list to work from? • What types of packages do you have to choose from? Can you customize? • How many weddings have you shot that are similar to size and format of our wedding? • Do you seem to get along well with the photographer and videographer? You will be spending most of your wedding day with them, so make sure you feel comfortable with their personality and their communication style.

q Engagement Rocks!

Without a word, a ring can tell a story. A single ring can contain an entire love story from the first kiss to the moment you say, “I do.” The rich history of wedding bands spans the world’s cultures over many centuries. Despite the diversity of interpretations, the symbolism is

ritual of placing wedding rings on the left fourth finger, which when traced to the heart was considered “the vein of love.” The presence of gemstones emerged in Medieval Europe, incorporating precious rubies representing love, and sapphires to symbolize the heavens. With the advent of World War II, American men

constant: a promise of love worn for the world to see. It is believed that the Egyptians first pioneered the custom of fashioning plant fronds into simple wedding rings. This practice gave way to more durable materials like leather, bone, and ivory. The ancient Greeks and Romans solidified the

started wearing wedding bands as a token of love and commitment to their sweethearts at home. While the tradition of engagement and wedding rings remains strong, the endless choices make for many contemporary interpretations. From classic gold bands to intricate, hand-

woven designs, and mixed-metal diamond stackable rings, the modern bride has limitless options to express herself. Finding the perfect ring can take time, energy, and many, many Pinterest pins! However, choosing the right engagement or wedding rings should be fun and engaging! Whether you’re scouting out styles online or trying on rings with your significant other, make sure you’re choosing a ring that will last a lifetime. If you’re already engaged, start shopping for wedding bands as soon as you’re ready! Some engagement rings come designed with a complementary wedding band that makes it very simple to complete your set. Some brides are choosing to forgo a band at the time of their wedding, but are opting for one (or two!) at a later date or occasion like a 1st anniversary. If you’re not finding the perfect fit, custom designing a ring is an exciting option. Creating a one-of-akind piece can take time, so consult your jeweler about the process and cost. Designing a custom ring that truly represents your unique style is a fun and memorable experience! Although style takes priority, consider your lifestyle when choosing wedding bands. This goes for both women’s and men’s rings. Form and function should inform what metal and stones you settle on. For wider styles, especially for men, choose a “Comfort fit” style that features a rounded interior to maximize fit. The popularity of alternative metals like

tungsten provides more choices than ever, however, they aren’t always the best choice for every groom. Though hard, they can be brittle, difficult to remove in an emergency, and aren’t resizable. Some jewelers will offer an exchange if sizing is necessary over time. Choosing a men’s wedding band is just as important as selecting the engagement ring; each represents the love and commitment you promise to each other! Whether he chooses hammered, fashionforward red gold, platinum and diamonds, or something classically simple - he’s worth it! Wedding expenses can add up quickly and your wedding rings are a small part of your big day. Invest in quality rings that fit in your budget but that you’ll love now and forever. Not only are your wedding rings a part of your own family story, they’re a lasting symbol of the tradition of love. Erin Bitzan – DJ Bitzan Jewelers

q Make an Impression!

When does the first impression of your wedding happen? At the church? At the reception? Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and

An invitation can consist of several customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a self-addressed, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a savethe-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct

specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision.

and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. They can be worded and arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion. You should integrate your wedding colors into your invitations to tie your theme together. There are a large variety of ink colors, type styles and paper to choose from to create a unique wedding ensemble.

In designing a custom invitation, please allow enough time for the actual design, proofing, printing, assembling, addressing and mailing. Invitations should be mailed out six to eight weeks prior to your big day. Request RSVPs with the response card two to three weeks prior to the event. Remember to order at least 25 extra for last minute guest additions, mistakes and to have a couple for keepsakes. Creating a custom wedding collection will truly be a personal reflection of your special day! They will create your love story from the first impression to “I Do.”

Cakes, Cakes, Cupcakes, Cupcakes and more

The wedding cake has its roots in ancient Rome, when a wheat or barley cake was broken over the bride’s head as a sign of good fortune. We love how couples have been reimagining it ever since! In the past few years, we’ve seen the birth of the dessert bar, the cupcake wedding cake, and the wedding donut. Here’s a couple of interesting ideas ……. Just about anything can inspire your wedding cake design -- the beautiful ornate molding in your ballroom venue, your joint love of modern design, or even the pattern from the china you just registered for. Here are 10 custom cake ideas. Your baker can help with the rest. Metallic Cakes Ruffled Cakes White-on-White Wedding Cakes Naked Cakes Painted Wedding Cakes Lace Wedding Cakes

Woodland Wedding Cakes Geometric Wedding Cakes Rosette Wedding Cakes Sugar Flower Bouquet Cakes And speaking of Naked Cakes. No this cake isn’t a flasher...it’s just unfrosted (or the frosting is between the tiers). It’s elegant, naturallooking, and so on trend. Top your naked cake off with some fresh flowers or fruit, and you’ve got a picture-perfect dessert. The cakes-a-plenty concept. Instead of a cake with tons of tiers, couples are opting for multiple cakes displayed on pretty cake stands. We suggest choosing a few flavors if you go this route -- try a flavor that represents each of the newlyweds, plus a family recipe from each side. Do you prefer more of the form fitted clothing versus looser fitted clothing? This is a good indication as to what style of wedding gown you will end up loving! Most importantly trust your bridal stylist to help you find your perfect wedding gown.

The groom will want to reflect his own personal style on his big day as well! A lot of times the groom does not get enough attention paid to what personal style they would like have on their big day! groomsmen should be as well. They also should complement or match the bridesmaid dresses colors. Crista Mrozek – Mestads Bridal & Formal Wear Dress It Up - Men The first thing to consider as you look into men’s formalwear is the feel of your wedding. You have a range of choices from ultra-formal with tail-coats and cummerbunds to the very casual destination wedding look. Formal: The bride’s gown has a full train and the bridesmaids are in floor length gowns. Venue is a church, country club, or hotel ballroom that is elegantly decorated. Black tuxedos with a white or ivory vest and tie on the groom and a black or matching vest and tie on the groomsmen. A bowtie is a great accessory for the formal wedding. Semi-formal: The bride’s gown is full length with or without a short train. Bridesmaid dresses are long or short. The venue is a church, hotel ballroom, or elegant outdoor venue unique and special to the bride and groom. It may be personally or professionally decorated with complementing wedding colors. The men’s tuxedos are black, grey, or navy. The groom’s vest and tie is often white or ivory and the groomsmen match the bridesmaids. Informal: The bride’s gown is simple – full or short length. Bridesmaid dresses are short and in the wedding color. The venue may be smaller and more intimate: bed and breakfast or resort, parks or beaches with simple or understated decorations. The groom may wear a tuxedo or suit in grey or tan. For a more casual feel, opt out of the jacket and wear a vest or suspenders instead. Next think about who you want to have in formalwear: The groom, groomsmen (and jr. groomsmen), ushers, ring bearers, and dads typically are in tuxedos or suits. Parties could also extend to include grandfathers, the officiant, readers, candle-lighters or anyone else significant to you. Once you have the menswear look and wedding party in mind, here are some things

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Dresses & Tuxedos

69

to think about when shopping for your menswear provider: Look for local shops: When your wedding party arrives in town, there will be a second fitting to tackle any possible alterations and adjustments before your wedding. Choose a trusted formalwear provider near your wedding location to make it easy for the party. Look for current styles: Does the provider keep their styles fresh and contemporary with modern fits and the most up-to-date colors? Boxy, threebutton coats and pleated pants are out of style. Look for wedding-focused providers: Vendors who work primarily with weddings have your needs in mind. Ask if they have flexibility to accommodate last minute changes. Make sure your menswear provider can accommodate all of your specific needs. Look for a one-stop shop: Look for a vendor that provides the entire package for the entire party. Your guys shouldn’t have to track down an unusual size ivory shirt, or a special shoe. The provider

70

should carry popular wedding colors and styles in a variety of sizes from the littlest ring-bearer to the tallest groomsman. The men’s formalwear side of the wedding party is equally as important as the ladies. Begin looking early and plan to have the final order placed 3-6 months before the wedding date.

Silhouette Guide

Ball Gown – The Ball Gown is fitted at the bodice and has a waistline that leads to a full skirt. It compliments hourglass body types. A-Line – The A-Line is fitted at the bodice and angles out to the ground and resembles the outline of an ‘A’. This is the most universal silhouette because it tends to look great on every body type. Trumpet – The Trumpet hugs the hips and flows out in an A-line around the mid-thigh. It tastefully compliments a woman’s shape without being confining. Mermaid – The Mermaid does fit closely to the body on to the knees. It then flares out to the hem. This style looks good on women with a straight shape. Sheath – The Sheath is usually semi-fitted from top to bottom with a straight skirt and has no waist. This will be flattering on many shapes. Goddess – The Goddess is a new shape that seamstresses refer to in describing any shape that flows freely from the bust line. In most cases, this Goddess has an empire waist so the dress will flow freely. It also flatters most body shapes.

Planning an Outdoor Wedding? As a young child you envisioned your wedding taking place in your home town or in your parent’s backyard. A wedding night dream filled with dancing under the stars with all your family and friends surrounding you can come true. In the Central Minnesota surrounding areas there are several rental companies

who specialize in large outdoor weddings, including canopies. There are certain steps that are required to follow when planning an outdoor wedding. Let’s walk through them. Step 1: Picking your location • Measuring out the space desired in order to accommodate the appropriate 78

size of a canopy, and an accurate guest count will also help determine size needed.

Step 2: Contact Rental Company • Setting up a meeting with a rental company is very important. Establishing a solid and comfortable relationship

with your rental company will make the entire process smooth and ensure all needs are met. • At this meeting they will be able to answer any and all questions you may have about your chosen location and all other services they provide. • Most rental companies book out anywhere between 1 year to 6 months

prior to the wedding date, so setting up a meeting is very important. • Establishing a budget prior to your meeting will help determine the services that can be provided. Step 3: Items Needed • Canopy (obviously!) Size will vary upon guest count. • Tables, Chairs, Linens • Lighting and Flooring Options • Draping and custom décor • Accessories for canopies to help protect from any weather conditions. • Food, beverage, photography, and music services. Step 4: Custom Décor • There are several decorating professionals and rental companies in the surrounding area that can provide custom décor needs for all canopies. Step 5: Wedding of Your Dreams • Letting all the wedding professionals take charge in helping plan and organize your wedding can ensure all your hopes and dreams come to life on your wedding day. DIY:

Customized Details- DIY projects are a perfect way to add a personalized touch to your wedding. Unique guest books, place cards and wedding favors are the small pieces of your wedding that guests will remember, and keeping it DIY prevents the projects from becoming too pricey. Set-up- Chipping in for portions of the set-up can decrease the labor costs associated with your wedding. Perhaps you can learn to install your own chair covers or have friends and family set up the tables. A word of caution, though: if the schedule is tight, cut back in another area in order to hire additional help and prevent

exhaustion among your family and friends. DIY projects to consider: • Tying your own sash ties • Custom Photo Display • Table Numbers • Flower girl basket For the couple on a budget, just remember cheaper is not always better. You can have the wedding of your dreams on a dime, just by knowing what to rent, buy, and DIY.

Questions

Questions to ask for décor or rentals: • Is the first visit a free consultation?

• Ask for references as well as the decorator’s experience in the industry. • Ask if the decorator has any special deals or other ways to give you the best value for your money. • Ask for a “door quote,” which is the full amount you will pay, including all fees, before signing a contract. • Ask about the policy on deposits and refunds. • Are there any photos of similar weddings that may be emailed to you, or is there a portfolio available for you to look at? • Do you have delivery fees, set up/tear down fees or a damage deposit requirement? • What is the payment schedule?

q Picking the Perfect Wedding Flowers

Selecting flowers is one of the most essential steps in the wedding planning process. Next to the bride, the wedding flowers are one of the most photographed details of your wedding day. It is crucial to have wedding bouquets and centerpieces that fit both the style and theme of your perfect wedding day. Picking the right florist to design and create your dream bouquets and floral

design work. This will also allow you to form an impression about a florist regarding how they make you feel when you meet them in a room full of other brides. • Make an appointment. Book a time to sit with a florist and look at photos of their past creations, which will allow you to see their designs in close detail. Always ask to see pictures of work they have done

decorations is a satisfying accomplishment on your wedding checklist if you follow these steps: • Ask for referrals. When a florist is highly recommended by another bride or photographer, you know they will do a fantastic job on your wedding. • Attend bridal expos. You can experience fresh, real-life creations as well as examine the quality of the florist’s

and not stock photos out of books and off the internet. Are their arrangements unique and creative? This is also a great time to determine their knowledge of flowers and assess their wedding floral experience level. • Plan, plan, plan. Have some floral ideas in mind when you meet with your florist. Look at their Facebook page, Pinterest and webpages to get ideas.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Florists

87

Bring pictures from magazines or the internet that reflect your vision. Have some colors and flower choices in mind. If you’re unsure of what you want, an outstanding florist should be able to help you create that perfect combination of colors and flowers to make your wedding flowers a dream come true. • Pick your florist. Book a florist (by securing them with a deposit) that makes you feel at ease and comfortable. Find one who listens to your ideas, but has ideas and suggestions for you, as well. Select someone you really want to work with, not just someone who is available on your wedding day. Remember it is more about your satisfaction than just the price. You cannot always compare price when you may not know what all comes with their quote. Find a florist who is just as excited about your flowers and wedding day as you are! Picking your bridal bouquet is an important start to a beautiful wedding day. Once the bride’s bouquet flowers are chosen, the rest of the wedding flowers, from the bridal-party flowers to the corsages and boutonnieres—will fall into place by incorporating the bouquet flowers throughout all of the wedding flowers. Once you’ve chosen your flowers, you’ll need to create the perfect ceremony site design plan. If you are having a traditional wedding, the aisle you walk down should represent elegance truly worthy of you as a bride. You need everything from gorgeous pew decorations to amazing altar pieces to make this a stunning vision. Finally, it’s time to design the reception site: this is your “Wow Factor.” You can make an impressive and beautifully elegant statement by having large floral centerpieces with multiple designs. These designs should utilize different sizes to break up the room’s space, ultimately giving the reception site the true beauty that every bride deserves at her wedding reception. Questions Questions to ask the Florist:

• Can you see photographs or live examples of past work? • When do you need a final count for table centerpieces? • Can you provide items such as vases or candelabras?

• D o you know who will be creating your flowers? Be sure to get to know the person who will, so you can trust them. • H ow many weddings is the florist handling on the day or weekend of your wedding? • Can you recommend any seasonal flowers that would help keep cost down? • How much is it to secure my date? • When is the final balance due? • D o you deliver? Is there a fee? When would you be delivering the flowers or when would we pick them up?

q Music

What will your guests experience as they arrive at your wedding? Very likely...MUSIC! Whether your celebration is outdoors, at a place of worship, or at a venue, music will be setting the atmosphere. When planning your wedding, make sure your music complements the style and atmosphere you wish to create.

• G et word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends. • G et recommendations from local music stores and music schools. • D o an internet search for the type of music professionals you are looking for. • S earch for online reviews of those professionals.

Here are some suggestions that will help you accomplish this. Whether you are having live music or recorded music, the professionals you hire can make or break your wedding. Wouldn’t you love to have your guests rave about the musicians or DJ you hired? This doesn’t happen by accident. • Get word-of-mouth recommendations from venues that you visit.

• C ontact them and ask to hear them perform live. • A sk them for sample demo recordings. • A sk them for client references. Contact those references and ask for their opinion of the professional you are considering. • G o with your instincts. Does your wedding seem important to those you have contacted?

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

95

Do they respond to you promptly and courteously? Are they excited about your wedding? Do they LISTEN to you? Questions to ask your music professionals. • Do they provide a free consultation to help you plan your music? • How much experience do they have? I.e. How many weddings have they done? How many years performing? • Do they have a strict repertoire or are they willing to learn new songs? • Do they play the style of music you are looking for? • Are they willing to accompany vocalists or other instrumentalists if necessary? • Will they attend your wedding rehearsal if you want them to? • What backup plans can they offer if they are not able to perform for your wedding? • Do they provide you with a written contract? • Find out the total cost to you including mileage, set up fees, rehearsal, practicing with other musicians, learning new music, etc. The music professionals you select will want to meet with you to plan your music. In preparation for this, feel free to communicate with them any ideas you have regarding your music. At your meeting, your music professionals will work with you to create a repertoire that reflects your style for the ceremony and reception. Be prepared to provide your input on music ideas as well as listen to your music professional’s suggestions. Things you can do to help your musicians. • If you are having live music, tell your musicians any special song requests that you have. It can sometimes take 4-8 weeks to special order music, so it is important to do this well in advance of your wedding. Your musicians will appreciate some time to learn the music as well. • If you have a vocalist or another instrumentalist that needs accompaniment, be sure and let your musician know.

96

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

If you are having a traditional wedding ceremony, you will want to confer with your music professionals regarding the following items. • Prelude Music. Music to set the mood while the guests are being seated and waiting for the ceremony to begin. • P arents and Grandparents Song. Sometimes couples want a special song played when the parents and grandparents are seated. • W edding Party Processional. This song is played when the wedding party enters. • P rocessional. This song is played when the bride, groom or couple walks down the aisle. It can be a continuation of the wedding party processional or it can be a totally different piece of music. This music is usually grand and festive. For GLTB weddings, the brides, grooms or couples sometimes enter together or one after the other. • I f you are having Unity Candle and/or Rose Presentation, music is often performed. • S igning of the Wedding License. If this is part of the ceremony, music provides a nice background. • I f you are having Communion or Mass, music is often played or sung. • R ecessional. This music is played at the conclusion of the ceremony when the couple makes their exit. This music is usually bright and lively. • P ostlude Music. Your musician provides music for your guests to enjoy while the guests are being ushered out. If you are having a non-traditional ceremony, you will want to meet with your music professional early in your planning stages, so that you and they

will have time to locate and select the music that will reflect your style of wedding. There are many wonderful music options for your reception...solo instrumentalists, ensembles, bands, DJ’s, or a combination. Decide what atmosphere you wish to create for your cocktail time, your dinner and your after dinner or dance. Consider what type of instrumentation can create that atmosphere? Live music? A DJ? This is where actually hearing the musicians and DJ perform will give you insight into the best fit for your wedding. NOTE: If you prefer using recorded music for your ceremony or reception rather than hiring a music professional, check that your wedding facility has adequate sound equipment available. Ask if a sound technician is available. You’re almost done! There are just a few more details to cover. • D oes your musician need to provide his/her own instrument or is the instrument available at the wedding location? For example, if you hire a pianist, find out if there is a piano available and how much it costs to reserve. What is the sound quality of the instrument? How often is it tuned? Your musician should be taking care of all these details, but you’ll want to make sure that is the case. If a piano is not available, you may wish to rent one from a local music store or find out if your pianist will provide a portable piano. • S ome clergy and churches are selective as to the type of music they allow, be sure and check this out with the person officiating at your wedding.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

97

• S ome facilities and churches have sound technicians, and some even require that you hire one for your event. You would want to hire a sound technician as soon as possible to insure his/her availability for your event. • T ake the stress out of your music planning by hiring experienced and talented music professionals that you can trust ... and ... ENJOY your wedding day! Sharon Planer, – Pianist for Parties owner

q Choosing a DJ? Excellent Choice!

Friends and family please rise and join me in welcoming…YOU! With that you and your new husband or wife enter to the cheers of your closest family and friends welcoming you to your reception – the celebration of your commitment and love. Everything is unfolding exactly how you pictured it; your reception is a success! You may not realize as you begin your planning though that the DJ you choose plays a big role in the overall success of your reception. Your DJ will serve you in a variety of ways to ensure that everything flows smoothly throughout the event. They will be your emcee and handle everything from your grand

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

entrance and meal blessing to introducing your first dance and the last dance of the evening - and everything in between. They will coordinate with your other vendors (photographer, chosen venue, caterer, videographer, etc) to make sure that everyone is working from the same time line and that there are no surprises in how things happen throughout the night. They will help with things that need doing; during my years I’ve released tables for dinner, lit candles on tables, even jump started a few vehicles. Oh, and they play music too. Your DJ will set the mood for your evening with their music selections. Using your requests along with those of your guests, your DJ will be able to put together a well programmed evening of music that fits your crowd. Choosing what songs to play is always one of the most important roles a DJ plays as the music needs to fit the crowd and be appropriate for everyone from ‘little cousin Joey’ to ‘Great-Grandma Sue’. Be sure to choose your DJ carefully, they will be responsible for much more than “just playing music”. Most couples have never hired a DJ before though so it’s good to have an idea of some questions that you can ask as you look for the right company for your wedding. Here are a few to get you started. Are you available on my date? Obviously this is something that you need to confirm first; if the DJ you talk to is not available, ask who they would recommend. Many vendors have a list of trusted people in the same area of expertise. Can I contact some of your previous clients for a reference? Getting references for a DJ is a great way to get an idea how your experience with them may go. How much / what kind of music do you have? A DJ needs to not only have a good sized music library (minimum of 1015 thousand songs), but it also needs to have a great deal of variety. If you have a

particular style in mind you should discuss that as well. Do you provide any other services besides DJ? Many DJs have expanded to offer more services for your wedding. Some more common offerings include photo booths and décor lighting. Many companies will offer a package discount if you use more than one of the services that they offer. My biggest piece of advice to you is to relax and have fun. Get to know your DJ, and enjoy the process – your wedding will be here before you know it. Shed Some Light on the Reception... You have decided on a venue for your reception. The manager is great; it’s the perfect size to accommodate all your guests. There’s just one thing that it’s missing – your personal touch. Imagine

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

99

your wedding colors filling the walls of your venue. It can add so much to your room and is also a very cost effective way to use your décor budget. Using some of the same technologies that your DJ uses to add color and energy to the dance floor, lighting designers are able to add light to your whole room and transform the “feel” of your event. Perhaps the most popular lighting option is uplighting. Uplighting creates columns of light throughout your venue. Uplighting your entire room can make quite a statement as your colors bring the room to life. Want to add some color, but not light to the whole room? Many couples choose to uplight the wall behind their head table so it stands apart from the rest. Doing a “sweet heart” style table instead? Lighting can be placed underneath to make your whole table glow. The same can be done with a cake, candy, or just about any table that is covered in a white table covering. Another fun option is pin spotting. One of the most common uses for pin spotting is to highlight your cake.

100

You could use them to show off an ice sculpture, a unique card box, a centerpiece on your head table…the list can be as big as your imagination. What’s more personal than your names, or a special logo that represents you and your day? Adding a custom monogram is a great option to do just that. Monograms are often displayed on either the dance floor or above your head table. The same equipment used to project your monogram can also be used to project patterns and texture around your venue as well. These are just a few of the options and ideas to get you thinking about the amazing options that are available to you when you add lighting to your event. Don’t be afraid to step ‘outside of the box’ when creating your design with the help of your lighting designer – the sky is the limit when it comes to the colors and styles that you can choose! q Transportation 101 Arrive in Style

As you plan your special day your thoughts should include how you and that special person you are marrying are going to “arrive in style” for the most anticipated day of your life. Whether you are choosing a limousine, a vintage car, a bus, or a horse-drawn carriage there are many options available to you. Limousines and charter buses have grown in popularity in recent years. Wedding couples have been making

your style is elegant or relaxed, your budget is limited or extravagant the following information will help direct you down the path to trouble free transportation arrangements. • Work with a “reputable” company when choosing your transportation. Check their BBB rating (Better Business Bureau). Proper Licensing, Insurance, and Driver Qualifications are important! Your “safety” should be foremost in your mind.

transportation arrangements in order to keep their wedding party together throughout the day; from the ever popular church or park to the reception to the all-day package that is open to the couples every whim. Wedding guest transportation also continues to be a growing trend. Whether your party is large or small,

• Chose an appropriate “size” vehicle for your needs. Comfort should be paramount! Note the broad shoulders/ height of your groomsmen and the fullness of the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses. • Reserve as “early” as possible. If your heart is set on a particular limousine or option, make sure to get your signature on the dotted line for your date and time.

107

However, don’t assume there is nothing out there if you want to book the week before. You may be surprised what is still available. • Letting “cost” be the deciding factor in determining what type of transportation you choose or what company you work with may not be the best idea. Sometimes what appears to be a great price turns into a disappointment in the end. Do your homework, details matter! Certain package options including, split time, all day, or minimum hour time frames may be worth your consideration. (Remember that the gratuity is usually an additional expense.) • Get a “written” confirmation sheet or contract. That way there is no misunderstanding as to when and where your transportation is expected. • “Understand” what you have reserved. Knowing what is included in your wedding package, Red Carpet Service, or what is customary goes a long way in you having a smooth ride. Remember, even though you are paying for the vehicle, any illegal behavior/ activity is still illegal and prohibited. • How will the driver/chauffer be “dressed”? Most professional transportation companies have set attire

108

for their personnel. Ask what your driver will be wearing. • Is “alcohol” included in the price? Limousine and charter companies may provide non-alcoholic beverages along with the glassware set up, however, MN State Statues prohibits companies from providing alcoholic beverages. Check with your provider as to what type, if any, alcoholic beverages may be brought into the transportation choice you have made. • As mentioned above “Wedding Guests” transportation is a growing trend. If you are serving alcoholic beverages throughout your reception, it may be wise to provide a safe ride for your guests too. Some hotels and venues provide shuttle services but not all. Ask your transportation provider for their input. There are “economical” options available that could keep you from needless worry and/or liability. Whether you have chosen a limousine, a bus, or a buggy; chosen a full day package or just a ride from the church/ park to the reception, you can make these reservations at any time. Just don’t forget to “Arrive in Style”! Tami Spanier – Pearl Limousine, Inc.

Questions

Questions to ask about transportation: • What type of vehicle do I want?

• Who do I want in the vehicle? (Options for parents/grandparents?) • How many hours will I need? • When should I reserve? • What is included? (Packages / Red Carpet Service) • Should I think about “Wedding Guest” Transportation?

q Look Fabulous on Your Special Day

Tips for Beautiful Bridal Hair 1. Six months before the wedding do a consultation with your stylist to determine the best hair color for you to have for your special day. Pick a color that is true to you and will look classic in pictures that you will be looking at 20 years from now. Hair color looks the best in the first two weeks, so get your wedding color done a week or two before the big day!

3. No chemical treatments the day of the wedding. Your wedding day is not the time for surprises! 4. Do not skip the trial run for your wedding hair. Think of it as a dress rehearsal for your hair! Bring pictures of styles you like along with you to the trial. It will help your stylist really get an idea for what you like before starting the trial. Wear the style for the entire day after you get it done to

2. Hair that is too fine or over conditioned does not style well, so do not do any deep conditioning treatments within four days of the wedding. Also, if possible, do not shampoo your hair the day of the wedding. Try to lightly shampoo the day before. This will help your stylist create the best possible style for your special day.

determine your comfort while wearing the style and the longevity of the style. 5. While choosing your wedding hairstyle consider a few things: a. Your dress b. The style of your whole wedding c. The time of day your wedding will take place. For example: Loose, romantic styles are great for an

outdoor wedding during the daytime. For an evening wedding, consider going with a sleeker, polished, elegant style. Doing this makes sure you don’t look out of place at your own wedding. Tips for Beautiful Bridal Makeup/ Skin One of the things most women want on their wedding day is a beautiful, glowing complexion and beautiful makeup so they look absolutely perfect on their wedding day. One Year Before the Wedding Take Care of your Skin!: Start a regular skin care regimen. Make sure you wash your face regularly, exfoliate, and moisturize! Drink Up!: Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day- every day! Not only will it keep you hydrated, but your skin will look fresh and radiant! Also drinking an adequate amount of water can help clear your skin of any pesky breakouts! Makeup Trial: Find a make-up artist near you and set up a trial. This will give you a good opportunity to see his or her portfolio and also for you to experience their work first hand. Discuss how you’d like to look on your big day, and play around with different looks. This helps you to make sure you like their work and will also help you to see if you click with them before you hire them! A Few Months Before the Wedding Get Facials: See your local esthetician or spa for monthly facials. These will help clean your pores and rejuvenate your skin. They are also incredibly relaxing! Be Careful in the Sun: Always wear sunscreen! Even when the sun isn’t out! It will protect your skin from harmful UV rays and keep your skin looking healthy for years to come! Make sure your sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays!

114

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Hair Salons & Spas

The Week Before the Wedding Waxing: Make sure you schedule your eyebrow grooming for at least a week before your wedding. Skin can get red and irritated after waxing so make sure yours has proper time to heal before your big day! Spray Tan: Schedule a spray tan for a few days before the wedding, NOT the day before incase you get some not so fab results! Also don’t forget to exfoliate your skin before you go get your spray tan- it will help you have more even and glowing results! The Night Before Clean Slate: Wash off ALL your makeup! Even if you partied hard at your rehearsal dinner- make sure you wash all of your makeup off! You (and your make-up artist) will want to start with a perfectly clean slate in the morning.

The Morning Of Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturize: Apply the moisturizer generously. It is much better to have dewy skin in photos than dull, flaky skin. Use an eye cream that will help with any puffy eyes and dark circles. Place a cold pack soaked in chamomile tea onto your eyes to calm down any additional puffiness. What About my Groom? Your Groom’s hair is important too! After all, you both will have to look at pictures for the rest of your lives! This is the most important haircut of his life. Make sure he sticks to a cut that is true to him, but if he wants to try a look that is a little more polished, now is the time! A classic fade is a look for men that is super polished, and will look flattering on any man. If your man decides to try a new look, have him “test drive” the look a few months in advance.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Hair Salons & Spas

115

Where Should He Get His Cut?: If he has someone who usually does his hair, stick with that person! If not, encourage him to go to a barber shop or a salon that has someone who specializes in men’s cuts. These places are well worth the money, and will have your Groom looking his very best! When Should He Get His Cut?: He should get his haircut a week or so before the big day to avoid any awkward new haircut phase on the day of the wedding. Your guy will know how long his hair stays in that phase, so trust him to know when the very best time to get his cut is. Make it Fun!: A great idea for your Groom and all of his groomsmen is to go to a barber shop the morning of the wedding to get a “fresh shave”. Barbers will usually offer this service, and it is a great way for your man to treat his boys! Make sure to call ahead of time and make an appointment.

Questions Questions to ask a Salon: • Can I see a portfolio of your work?

• What is that total cost and what does it include? (Trial run, day of, extra costs?) • What are your reservation and cancellation policies? • How many people can you accommodate? • Do you provide refreshments? Can I bring my own? • Do you have group rates? • What do you recommend for my hair and skincare regimen prior to my wedding? • What does trial makeup and hair entail? • What do I bring with me to the trial? • Where will hair/makeup take place? Do you provide on location services? • What items do I need to bring with me on the day of my wedding? • Will my hair/makeup stay fresh all day? What do I need to do to touch up if necessary? • How far in advance should I book my appointment? Tipping Guide: Make-up Artist and Hair Stylist: 10-20% of the total bill.

Unforgettable; impossible to forget, very memorable. One of the first words a couple will use when starting to plan their honeymoon is Unforgettable. “We want it to be unforgettable A honeymoon has been a long time tradition for many couples. It is meant to get away and enjoy each other as a new married couple. For many this is a very special time and they recognize that this is a once in a life time vacation.

No matter where you want to go or what you want to experience here are three simple steps in getting your planning started. 1. Discuss together. 2. Use a Travel Agent. 3. Have fun! In early conversation the two biggest items that come up are the destination and budget. The destination can be an important piece. Some will want to

With wedding planning sometimes comes stress and with all the busyness of the event, a honeymoon sounds very exciting and relaxing to many. Just the thought of getting away for a few days or even two weeks, may sound like paradise.

go somewhere they have never been, maybe an island you have dreamed of, or it could be a place you have been before and simply love! Where ever your discussion leads, add in what you want to experience!! One of my favorite

122

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Travel Agencies

ways to plan the perfect honeymoon is to take a moment and imagine your honeymoon, then name off the top 3 to 5 things you see yourself enjoying and make a list. Top Honeymoon experiences: 1. Relaxing together on a beach 2. Romantic dinners 3. A new Active Adventure! Example: surf lessons, zip lining, etc. 4. We want to feel special and enjoy great service Top Honeymoon Destinations: 1. St. Lucia 2. Negril, Jamaica 3. Riviera Maya, Mexico 4. Maui, Hawaii 5. St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands Once you complete both lists, this is where having a professional travel agent can further help you! Finding a travel agent that is certified in honeymoon planning will not only help you create the perfect honeymoon but make sure it is extra special. For many of you this is your first vacation and it is a once in a life time vacation, so why not leave it up to the experts. They will focus on your destination, experiences and can also help you with your budget. A budget tip is to compare different price points and what you are getting from each package. This will help you know what the two of you are comfortable spending and what you will get and enjoy from each package. When each option is laid out this can help you in what you select. Have fun! With many wedding planning decisions you both are making, remember to have fun and not to worry. You are taking this trip to enjoy each other and celebrate your new marriage! Congratulations, this is a very exciting time of your life. Enjoying it will make it Unforgettable! Nichole Winter – Destination Vacation
