Spartan (spar’tn), adj. 1. Sternly disciplined and rigorously austere. 2. Undaunted and bold. San Jose State University, founded in 1857, is situated in the heart of Silicon Valley and is the oldest public university in the state. Diversity, exuberance, and a modern appeal, are characteristics that have become synonymous in defining the city of San Jose. The Spartan Daily captures the essence of those qualities while maintaining a tradition of strong journalism. This tradition, in the center of a flourishing city, creates a unique heritage that is symbolic of San Jose. The Spartan Daily, has established a legacy of excellence since it was founded in 1934. Each day, over 30,000 students and faculty turn to the Spartan Daily, both in print and on the web, for current and late-breaking news. With thousands of copies distributed to over 40 locations, the Spartan Daily reinforces its commitment to informing, educating, and entertaining the “metropolitan campus” each weekday morning of the academic year. When students, staff, and faculty pick up the newspaper, they are exposed to special-interest supplements, theme sections, columns and opinions that offer an in-depth coverage of news, sports, and special events on and off campus. Each print and web page provides the reader with a sense of connection to a bold institution and the city it resides in. The Spartan Daily is a distinguished asset to the university’s Journalism and Mass Communications program and upholds a journalistic print tradition in an electronic environment.

The Daily Orange is a student-written newspaper packed with original content, hard-hitting news, and the most complete — and often controversial — SU sports news. The D.O. has been recognized nearly every year since 1903 as one of the best college newspapers by the Associated Collegiate Press. Many local and national advertisers such as Geico, Boom Babies, Ford, and Verizon know that the most consistent way to reach the SU community is through The D.O. Local market surveys show that 95% of the student body and 78% of the SU faculty read the DO. If you want to reach the 30,000 students, well-paid professionals, and local residents of the SU community, the DO is the most — perhaps the only — reliable and cost effective way to advertise your product or message.
