Alcohol Bars or nightlife Coffee Groceries Restaurants/fast food Books or magazines Music (CD or downloaded) Movies (theater or rental) DVDs Women’s clothing Men’s clothing Shoes Gas Toiletries Hair salon or barber School supplies
The SU COMMUNITY SPENDS an average of $3,202,250 PER WEEK
THIS TOTALS ABOUT $125 PER PERSON ON CONSUMER GOODS AND SERVICES
People spend the MOST MONEY on groceries, gas, alcohol, restaurants/fast food, and coffee IN THAT ORDER
35% of students cite GAS as their top weekly expenditure
Out and about
Despite the stereotype that students are stuck on the Hill, a striking 93% of the SU community spends money in Carousel Mall. 83% spends money on Erie Blvd and 68% spends money in Armory Square.
No wheels? No problem 100% of students without cars still travel off campus. 58% of these students most frequently patronize a business that is off campus.
Design tid-bit
The most memorable ads are large, colorful, and funny.
The Daily Orange,, Syracuse University’s independent student newspaper, makes it a priority to understand the community in which it is based. Through intense market research, a striking picture of its market has emerged. To ensure that its advertising is as effective as possible, The D.O. has conducted surveys, interviews, and focus groups to find out the consumer habits of students, faculty, and staff.
Tips for exceeding your expectations 1. Convey added value in your advertisement. Students want to think they’re getting a deal. 2. Remember the target of The Daily Orange is busy college students. You must stand out to get their attention. 3. Keep in mind that students don’t mind traveling off campus. The majority of businesses students patronize are off the Hill. 4. Spending the extra money for color or a larger size is always worth it. These factors are often present in effective ads. 5. Don’t restrict your business to one type of advertising. Students are looking to the classifieds for more than used cars. 6. Provide a clear picture of what your business has to offer. Photos, menus, and prices often work the best.
