January 10, 2007 CNBAM 2007 Advertising Designer of the Year To Whom It May Concern: To Jordyn Swingler, there is no such thing as pressure. There is no “inside the box.” In the two years I have known Jordyn as a designer for The University Daily Kansan, she has taken ideas and turned them into the best ads I have ever seen run in the Kansan. In fact, a vast majority of the ads we submitted to CNBAM this year were made by Jordyn. This is why I nominate her for CNBAM’s Advertising Designer of the Year. Jordyn came onto the Kansan staff in the spring of 2005 as a general ad designer and has moved up through the ranks to become the Creative Director. She had been successful in designing beautiful ads for the Kansan, but it wasn’t until the Fall 2006 semester that she began to design ads that weren’t just “pretty.” They sent the right message, established our advertisers’ unique selling proposition, and gave our advertisers an incredible return on their investments. In the summer of 2006, I asked Jordyn to design the Kansan’s rate card and media kit. I’m sure you will see in her materials that they are both graphically and visually pleasing. But it’s not only the way they look that adds to Jordyn’s portfolio; it’s the way Jordyn calmly and diligently finished them and accepted no less than perfection until they were done. That’s how Jordyn works: if it’s not perfect, it’s not done. While many designers would do what they have to do to get an ad done, they won’t spend hours finding the right picture, coming up with the right headline, or writing the perfect copy. Jordyn will every time. It’s obvious that Jordyn’s ability to design amazing ads is incredible. But what sets Jordyn apart from the rest is that she will do whatever it takes to get the job done and to get it done perfectly. Sincerely, Kyle Hoedl Business Manager The University Daily Kansan

December 29, 2006 CNBAM Selection Committee Designer of the Year To Whom It May Concern: I feel confident that Jordyn Swingler deserves CNBAM’s Designer of the Year award for three reasons. First, Jordyn’s design skills are, quite simply, fantastic. She understands the key principles of advertising, and she is able to integrate that with her graphic design education to produce beautiful ads that meet our clients’ needs. This idea of combining ad design and traditional art skills is critical for The University Daily Kansan. We hire brilliant art students who can an ad very “pretty,” but they often don’t understand what really makes an ad work. They may know typography, photography and illustration, but they have a hard time writing effective copy. For this reason, when we find a gem like Jordyn who can do both equally well, we know that she will be an incredible addition to our team. Second, Jordyn designs with the customer in mind. Jordyn asks many questions about our clients’ businesses, products, stores, personalities and past ads. She believes that getting inside the customers’ heads helps her put together a campaign that will deliver the right results. Jordyn also asks many questions of the salespeople. She understands that the design department serves the salespeople who serve the clients. For this reason, she works very closely with our sales team to ensure that she is delivering what they need to make the sale. Finally, Jordyn has demonstrated terrific leadership skills. This past semester, she served as the Creative Director, managing five designers. Through intense training and daily coaching, she leads a talented team that is always delivering beyond our customers’ and salespeople’s expectations. Jordyn has also worked through some personnel and process challenges fairly and professionally, and she didn’t allow those problems to inhibit her team’s ability to meet its goals. Through her leadership, her customer-focused work ethic and her exceptional design skills, Jordyn stands out as one of the Kansan’s top designers. She has received more positive feedback than I could write in two pages, and her work has produced excellent results for many, many Kansan customers. For these reasons, I highly recommend her for your Designer of the Year award. Sincerely,

Jennifer Weaver Sales and Marketing Adviser The University Daily Kansan

editor@kansan.com You have been accepted to your number one graduate school. All the hard work that you’ve put in during your undergraduate experience has paid off. But how are you going to keep your head above water? Graduate school is more intense than undergraduate school at the University, which means stepping up your academic game. Taming stress will help you conquer grad school. These tips are not only helpful for grad school students but undergrads as well. It is more important to follow these steps in grad school, however, because it requires more effort from its students.

When I graduate next May, I am going to be inundated with student loans because I chose to come here from out-of-state. Because I will have all this debt straight out of college, I plan to move back home into my parent’s house to save some money. I am not alone. More students are realizing that the benefits outweigh the negative aspects of living at home with your parents. Andrew Bruns, Overland Park senior, has decided that after he graduates this year, he will be moving back in with his mom. “It’s to save money and pay off student loans,” said Bruns. So you’re thinking it might be a good idea eh? Let’s go through some steps to make sure that it’s right for you. 1. Use common sense. Talk to your parents first about moving back, it is their abode after all. You may have lived with them for 18 years, but they may have turned your high school bedroom into the exercise room. 2. Make sure that all the ground rules are laid out. Many parents will be more lenient with rules, just because you aren’t a kid anymore. Bruns plans on making little adjustments from his current lifestyle, like being more courteous of his mom. Discuss curfew, inviting friends over, and doing your part around the house. 3. Decide how you are going to pay your parents to live with them. You are an adult now, and just like you pay rent in your apartment you should pay rent to your parents, whether it’s in money form or not. Offer to help out with chores or other activities around the house if you can’t help out financially. Bruns has no set payment with his mom but plans to help her out whenever he can. “My mom has done everything in her power to help me out and I’d do the same for her,” said Bruns. 4. Be proud that your parents are cool enough to let you live with them and be confident when people give you a hard time about it. “There’s a social stigma attached to a person who’s out of college and living with their parents,” said Bruns. This is especially true when you want to bring a potential significant other back to your place. Think Will Ferrell in the Wedding Crashers. If you can stand to live with your parents and follow these steps, it should be smooth sailing to cheap living and paying off those student loans.

January 2, 2007 CNBAM Selection Committee Designer of the Year To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to recommend Ryan Berg for your Designer of the Year award. I believe he is deserving of this recognition for three reasons. First, Ryan has talent and drive for innovation in everything he does. He builds strong relationships so that people trust implicitly his new, radically different ideas about advertising. Let me provide an example. In the spring of 2006, Ryan overhauled Kansan.com and our online advertising options. We went from many traditional banners per page, to one large, square position. In addition, Ryan made other changes that make our website notably different from other college papers’. But, he made these changes after extensive research into web design and online ad response. Many salespeople and clients were skeptical about the changes, but they trust in Ryan’s ability to drive innovations that drive results. Now, nearly a year later, our clients have enjoyed phenomenal results, and our salespeople are excited to sell better web products. Second, Ryan simply will not allow himself to finish an ad until he, the salesperson and the client believe that it is as well-designed and effective as it can be. He combines a somewhat obsessive attention to detail with an incredible eye for design to produce ads that help our customers connect with our readers. Ryan pushes himself and our clients to find exactly the right message, the perfect font, the ideal photo that make all the difference in getting results. He’s also used this incredible design skill to design professional rate cards, sales fliers, posters, and other materials that prepare our salespeople to make topnotch presentations to our clients. Ryan’s design skill and dedication to excellence in that make him invaluable to our team and our customers. Finally, Ryan has a solid understanding of marketing and advertising as much as he does graphic design. This is a unique trait. Like all college newspapers, we hire graphic designers to build our ads, and while they are all prepared artists, few are really marketers as well. Ryan is such an effective designer because he understands our clients’ audiences, and he finds ways to connect them with our readers. He understands our market research as well as any salesperson, and he uses this to design more relevant, more effective campaigns. He foregoes traditional, boring “here’s what we have to offer” ads in favor of more relevant, edgier copy that speaks to the benefit students will gain from a client’s product or service. This perspective enables him to deliver for our team over and over again. In conclusion, this team will lose something incredible when Ryan graduates in May. He has led innovations that have changed this organization at its core. He has repeatedly delivered exceptional campaigns through meticulous attention to design detail. He is as much as a representative of our products as any salesperson, because he commits himself to understanding our audience as well as he understands art and design. Quite simply, and quite sadly for us, he has a unique combination of talents that make him irreplaceable. For these reasons, I highly recommend him for this award. Sincerely, Jennifer Weaver Sales and Marketing Adviser The University Daily Kansan

January 17, 2007 To Whom It May Concern: In the four semesters I have been a member of this staff, I have heard countless compliments regarding the University Daily Kansan. However, the positive remark made most frequently about our paper and that our staff holds in highest regard is our ability to set trends in the college newspaper industry. We at the Kansan pride ourselves for our groundbreaking ideas and especially for the main force behind those ideas: Ryan Berg. The innovative ideas that Ryan envisions on a daily basis have contributed to making this newspaper the phenomenal product that it is today. Since its creation in 1997, the University Daily Kansan’s online edition, Kansan.com, was a hard to navigate and even harder to sell mess. The Web site had minimal archive availability and inconsistent advertising placements that made sales reps have to practically donate advertising spots to willing clients. This was until last year, when Ryan Berg decided that this poor excuse for an online newspaper was unacceptable. Ryan handled a strenuous summer internship while completely redesigning Kansan.com to the efficient and easy-to-use site that it is today. Thanks to Ryan’s work, our advertisers are clambering for the limited spaces that correspond to specific target audiences, our sales reps earned more than $12,000 in online advertising revenue, Kansan.com’s first profitable semester in its ten-year history, and Kansan.com is generating over 1.2 million page views every month. Throughout the fall, Ryan accompanied sales reps on client calls to assist in selling the product he created, and shared with the staff different angles to sell clients online at weekly meetings. This time last year, the Kansan was just a college newspaper; now, because of Ryan, we are a medium that our readers are interacting with seven days a week, 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world. Ryan has not only changed the face our newspaper through Kansan.com, but he has developed a number of products that are constantly improving the Kansan. As mentioned above, the Kansan is no longer a newspaper available through interaction solely via puzzles on the Entertainment page. As is custom with Ryan’s constant need to improve things, he saw a major opportunity in our Classifieds section. Student classified usage is huge within any college newspaper: we are always on the lookout for roommates, sublets, and used stuff. The opportunity area that Ryan found within this traditional means of advertising was the lack of interaction. In the age of the Internet, we are becoming less and less interested in picking up the phone to inquire about that used microwave—so why not make the student Classifieds section online and interactive? Ryan single-handedly created a student Classifieds Web site, hawkchalk.com where students can post their own “chalkings” that directly link to their e-mails. With hawkchalk.com, Ryan broke the barrier between traditional and nontraditional advertising, and changed the way University of Kansas students will utilize our Classifieds forever. However, Ryan’s achievements with the University Daily Kansan are not solely limited to his accomplishments with our online products. Ryan is a major contributor to products and ideas within all of the dimensions of the Kansan. In spring 2006, he designed six posters for KU basketball games with spaces for sixteen advertisements on the back. His designs last spring have had such a long-lasting effect that our clients are already asking when they can become a

part of the basketball poster series again. In addition to his posters, Ryan is always the first to lend a helping hand when a sales rep needs an innovative idea to make a dull campaign shine. A sales rep came to Ryan with the problem facing The University of Kansas Endowment Association: it was looking for a way to generate student interest in order to build a database of future donors to the organization. Ryan came up with a way to have students interacting with the association through the Kansan on a daily basis: KU Trivia. Through Ryan’s idea, students have been actively participating either via the Kansan or from Kansan.com, and the Endowment Association has already built a database of more than 500 future potential donors. As I have conveyed throughout this letter, Ryan Berg is much more than a designer. He is an innovator, an inspiration and an irreplaceable member of this staff. Once again, I am pleased to recommend Ryan Berg for CNBAM’s Designer of the Year. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely,

Jackie Schaffer Sales Manager University Daily Kansan
