January 8, 2007 Dear CNBAM Judges: Thank you for considering Ryan Kominsky of The Pitt News for CNBAM's Ad Designer of the Year Award. Ryan came to The Pitt News this year and acclimated to our work environment with little supervision. While we appreciate his technical skills and natural design abilities, it is Ryan’s genuine desire to satisfy our customers that is most impressive. He is open-minded and eager to please, and makes it his policy to spend time with each of our display sales representatives to discover their customers’ advertising goals. Carrying double majors in Psychology and Communications, Ryan will also graduate this April with a Studio Arts minor. He accepted the Ad Designer position at The Pitt News with an intention of getting some real-work experience, and because of his work here has recently landed the coveted Jack Horner Communications Design internship, an unpaid position, which requires 15 hours per week at this well-respected design shop. We hope the internship, coupled with his experience at The Pitt News will result in career opportunities come spring. Ryan’s crowning achievement this year was his creation of our 2006 house campaign. He spent hours on the Internet learning how to fold in origami fashion, and designed our campaign by folding pages of The Pitt News into animals. I’m sure he’ll attach samples of the campaign. Our main concern this year was readership numbers, since we plan on having a market survey taken later this semester and want as many loyal readers as possible. We wanted a campaign that simply placed our name in front of our readers’ eyes, but in a lighthearted, youthful style. Ryan’s message is almost an afterthought, a tiny yellow post-it note on each origami animal: “Read The Pitt News”. Fresh and fun, the campaign is drilling into our readers the importance of keeping abreast of university news on a daily basis. Ryan has placed his origami on our site as well, in an effort to drive our web visitors back to the print version. Ryan received absolutely no assistance from anyone on the professional staff in designing his house campaign or any of our customers’ advertising. He presents his ideas with several alternatives, listens to reactions without taking criticism personally and returns to the drawing board. A true team player, Ryan Kominsky has earned the respect and love of the entire business staff here at The Pitt News, and we appreciate the opportunity to nominate him for this year’s CNBAM Ad Designer of the Year. Sincerely,

Laurie Holding Advertising Adviser The Pitt News 412-648-7820

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter to recommend Ryan Kominsky, Ad Designer at The Pitt News at the University of Pittsburgh, for Ad Designer of the Year. Ryan brings much creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication to the office of The Pitt News. Quite simply, Ryan has gone far above and beyond his call of duty. His innate ability to treat every Account Executive with the utmost respect and diligence in completing all of his required assignments sets Ryan apart from other Ad Designers. He is constantly working to assist our sales staff. Ryan routinely works with Account Executives to help them become proficient in both Multi-Ad Creator and Adobe Photoshop. His patience with his co-workers is truly amazing. Ryan’s creative achievements this year have been great. He designed an inhouse campaign where he used origami techniques to create a variety of animals accompanied with catchy taglines to promote the newspaper. He also designed the “Best Of” awards that were given to businesses voted on by the University of Pittsburgh students for being the best in their designated field. Ryan has accomplished much while attending the University of Pittsburgh where he is pursuing a double degree in Psychology and Communication and a minor in Studio Arts. He still finds time to stay involved in campus life as well. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity where he served as Rush Chair and represented his fraternity at Greek Week campus events. Ryan is also an active member of the Pitt Program Council and currently holds a communications internship with Jack Horner Communications located in Pittsburgh. In closing, Ryan’s design abilities are impeccable and he is a terrific member of The Pitt News family. His attention to detail, strive for perfection, and creative talent make him a great candidate for Ad Designer of the Year. Sincerely, Nicole Seisek Advertising Manager The Pitt News

January 17, 2007 Dear CNBAM Judges: Thank you for the opportunity to nominate Stephany Conard for the CNBAM Ad Designer of the Year Award. Stephany came to us this year and has imparted her knowledge of PhotoShop, InDesign and MultiAd to all of us on the business staff. She held regularly scheduled design workshops where she walked sales representatives as well as profession staff members through the tools of PhotoShop, and introduced us to Adobe Illustrator for the first time. Stephany will leave behind a legacy for which we are truly appreciative. Stephany has an uncanny ability to envision a customer’s advertising campaigns after listening to a sales representative describe the store and its owner. She needs very little direction, designing ads in record time with utmost efficiency. She is good-natured with the business staff, accepting constructive criticism with an objective eye, and she delivers professional quality in her copy and design. Several of our advertisers increased their ad contracts because of the response they got from our readers; some of them enlarged Stephany’s ads to place in their shop windows, or used her design for major direct mail campaigns. Always on call, Stephany encourages us to call her cell phone in the event of an emergency. She works well under extreme pressure, amenable to the fast pace and everchanging needs within the office. The business division of The Pitt News has benefited tremendously from Stephany’s sense of vision and insight, and we’ll miss her next year when she graduates. Thank you for considering Stephany Conard of The Pitt News for CNBAN’s Ad Designer of the Year. Sincerely, Laurie Holding Advertising Adviser The Pitt News 412-648-7820

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter to recommend Stephany Conard for Ad Designer of the Year. In the past year Stephany has went above and beyond the call of duty to prove that she is an invaluable asset to The Pitt New staff. Stephany brings much enthusiasm and a positive energy to the office. She takes her time when creating advertisements and while helping Account Executives become acquainted with different creative programs. As a fifth year undergraduate student, Stephany is pursuing a double degree in Marketing and Studio Arts. The combination of Stephany’s savvy business knowledge and her keen artistic eye has allowed The Pitt News to create and implement powerful advertising campaigns for our customers. Stephany takes her education very seriously and feels it is very important to be an active member within the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, professional co-ed business fraternity. She was a member of the spring 2004 pledge class. She has served in many leadership roles throughout the fraternity. She was Pledge Advisor and served as the Committee Head of Awards. She is also an active member of the Studio Arts Club at the university. Stephany still finds time to volunteer at the Pittsburgh Animal Rescue League shelter. Stephany’s desire to push creative limits, help Account Executives with ad design, and deliver a cohesive advertising campaign consistent with client’s objectives. For these reasons Stephany Conard should be awarded Ad Designer of the Year. Sincerely, Jarod Taylor Business Manager

CNBAM Designer of the Year Letter of Recommendation and Nomination Michelle Rial Dear Judge(s); I recommend Michelle as a candidate for the CNBAM designer of the year. Michelle worked for The Daily Tar Heel from the fall 2003 through the spring of 2006. As the paper’s advertising director, I had the privilege of enjoying Michelle’s talents in special section covers, advertising campaigns and outstanding individual ads. Michelle’s organization and deadline management allowed her to consistently produce outstanding work for our clients. In particular, I enjoyed working with Michelle on a campaign for a local housing complex. After brainstorming ideas- Michelle creatively drew multiple cartoon renderings of the complex that highlighted different amenities. She did an excellent job of taking the clients ideas and making them work. Michelle is an outstanding, creative and driven designer. She worked well with the ad staff. She always took into account the desires and concerns of the clients. Michelle produced fabulous work in her three years at The Daily Tar Heel. I recommend Michelle Rial for the CNBAM designer of the year.

Sincerely,

Megan G McGinity Advertising Director (919) 962-0175

January 18, 2007

Nomination for Michelle Rial as Designer of the Year: I would like to offer a personal and professional nomination for Michelle Rial Designer of the Year. Michelle began working at The Daily Tar Heel at the end of her freshman year at UNC. She worked as an Advertising Production Assistant for the next three years in the Advertising Production Department under my supervision. Michelle created her own schedule and worked up to ten hours a week. She was primarily responsible for the creation of ads and special issue covers. Michelle worked well with little or no supervision. She worked well under pressure and always met or beat deadlines. Michelle’s creative energy flourished when given free range on projects and she seemed to have an endless creative drive. Michelle’s drive and creativity has helped The Daily Tar Heel win awards in the past. I highly recommend Michelle Designer of the Year.

Sincerely,

Penny Persons The Daily Tar Heel Advertising Production Manager 919) 962-3999

January 18, 2007 CNBAM Award Selection Committee: I am writing to recommend Michael Kerr for Designer of the Year award given by CNBAM to honor and recognize this special student and employee who has an abundance of and an overwhelming presence of creativity. I was extremely excited when Mr. Kerr was elected by his peers to be our Creative Director during the 2006-2007 academic school year. His dedication to his artwork and Student Media is evident. Mr. Kerr came to Student Media’s Fall Workshop in fall 2003. It was in his first semester at Student Media that he was elected to be the Associate Editor of our Sanskrit Literary Arts Magazine. His work ethic earned him the position of Editor of out Sanskrit Literary Arts Magazine during his sophomore year. After achieving the highest position in Sanskrit, he also managed to lead his team to the CMA Conference where they received the prestigious Pacemaker Award. Mr. Kerr went on to become a production assistant during his junior year and now creative director in the Student Media Marketing Department. Mr. Kerr works wonders under the pressure of deadlines and last minute changes. Not only does he keep calm but he also maintains a great attitude while fixing those last minute changes. Mr. Kerr is inventive, imaginative, and willing to go the extra mile for our clients. This year alone over five of our big clients have asked to meet with him since they have seen his work in our previous publications. Somehow he manages to keep a constant flow of creative ideas in making spec ads for clients and when designing full page and half page ads. What I like most of all is his true dedication to Student Media and his undying humor. He is not opposed to staying late to make sure that a client has approved their ads or rechecking the final dummy to ensure that there are no mistakes. Michael takes his job to a whole new level. I am sure that when he leaves UNC Charlotte our clients will miss his personality and his amazing, artistic creations.

Sincerely, Sarah Peifer Marketing Director Student Media Marketing

January 16, 2007 This letter serves to nominate Michael Kerr for CNBAM’s Designer of the Year. Michael is everything you’d expect in a good designer: understanding of basic design principles, proficiency with software, attention to detail and ability to think creatively, even within the restrictions of ad space and that pesky newsprint dot-gain-thing. He completes projects on time, works efficiently and asks the sales reps all the right questions. And Michael Kerr brings UNC Charlotte’s Media Marketing department so much more. Michael is inventive, imaginative and unafraid of challenges. He is utterly unflappable and won’t even snort with indignance when he receives a production request with no instructions save the maddeningly obtuse, “Have fun with it.” He is in good humor under deadline, under siege and even when he’s underappreciated. His design work is clear, simple, yet unique and striking. His talent is so impressive; it’s hard to see why he spends it promoting apartment specials, bar college nights and buy-one-get-one sales from local retailers. But he does — without a trace of smugness — because Michael understands that ads are made for clients, not for his ego. Best of all, he keeps us in stitches. His bone-dry wit, uproarious observations and eviscerating sarcasm have defused many potential meltdowns. Even when tensions are high and time scarce, Michael has a gift for getting everyone back on point and priorities in place with something to smile about as a bonus. In my seven years as graphics adviser to UNC Charlotte’s Student Media, I have been blessed to work with many talented and interesting student designers. I am proud of all of them and enjoy keeping up with them as they make their mark in their chosen fields. Of Michael Kerr I do not expect any such mark. When he hits the post-graduate, working world, I fully expect him to blow them away. Respectfully submitted,

LouAnn Lamb Graphics Production Coordinator, Student Media Publications Marketing and Graphics Coordinator, Student Affairs UNC Charlotte

Statement of Management Philosophy By: Jennifer Pastores Managing here at the Daily Evergreen Newspaper has proven to be a test of my abilities as well as a learning experience. Achieving advertising manager at the Daily Evergreen began my very first position of management. I remember asking myself, “Now what do I do?” upon becoming manager. Sure there were rules and guidelines to follow, old managers and advisers to give advice, but what exactly constituted as the best solution? Not knowing exactly how things were supposed to be done, I sought comfort in what I knew and felt the most comfortable with: being part of a team. As a manager, I transferred the knowledge I had from being part of a team my entire life towards the office. I appointed myself as the team leader, or coach, and had to choose what traits would best allow for the strongest team possible. In order to do this, when choosing a team, one searches for specific strengths and abilities that can improve the team as a whole. When hiring new sales representatives, I made sure to choose them based not only upon their résumé’s and work experience but how they would fit into our organization. Once the team was established, managing was very much like being a coach. As a coach, I noticed my “players” strengths and weaknesses. When assigning each rep to an account list, I took these strengths and weaknesses into mind. For example, one sales rep on my staff sounds extremely professional on the phone; therefore I gave her the account list with the major University accounts on it since those accounts often critic our staff as being merely “students”. During my experience as a manager, I have found basic functions of management to be: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. It is important to follow all of these

steps because each one is connected. Planning sets the goals you are trying to achieve not only as an individual, but also as the advertising department as a whole. Organizing allows you to achieve these goals and not lose sight amongst project overloads, busy days, or interfering coursework. It is important to lead by example, especially when in the situation of managing peers. In order for your team to take you seriously, you have to prove that your leadership is worth following. Controlling comes into play as the typical “manager. It is what defines tasks that need to be done and rules that need to be followed. When someone is consistently turning ads in after deadline, this is when controlling comes into play. As a manager to an employee, I would make sure to satisfy their needs as well as the needs of the organization. It is important to keep representatives to deadlines, however, it is also important for the customers to be satisfied. When customers are satisfied, it makes work easier for the staff and the paper looks better. Some of the most important traits I have acknowledged within myself that have enabled me to become a successful manager are: integrity, inner motivation, communications skills, maturity, consistency, responsibility and organization. Without these skills, management would be a very tough and probably unlikely circumstance.

Jan. 31, 2007 College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers 2006-2007 Contest Advertising Manager of the Year To Whom It May Concern: Jennifer Pastores has done an exemplary job as The Daily Evergreen’s advertising manager. She has increased revenues, provided strong leadership and improved relationships throughout the newspaper. Her numbers have been particularly impressive. During the first half of the year, advertising sales jumped by more than $57,000, an increase of 17 percent from the same period a year ago. Most of that growth came in the retail sector that accounts for nearly 80 percent of the our total revenue. And when you consider the area’s retail base hasn’t grown much in the past year or so and the increased pressure from other media, the gains are even more impressive. Much of the credit for this success goes to Jennifer and her management of the advertising department. She was elected to the position with an already proven record as one of our top sales representatives. In her first year at the Evergreen, she sold more than $60,000 in advertising and was consistently one of our top performers in special promotions and contests. Her competitiveness and work ethic carried over to her position as advertising manager. Between July and December of 2006, Jennifer exceeded every monthly goal and finished the first half of the year with total sales of $391,861 compared to $334,813 last year. Her sales team sold the equivalent of 90 additional full pages of advertising, a 16 percent gain. That worked out to nearly one additional page of advertising per issue during fall semester. Not only did the paper benefit from the increased revenue but the news department found itself with more space to display photos and stories. In fact, during fall semester the size of the paper grew by more than 170 pages. Our average size went 12 pages per issue to 16. Jennifer played a key role in this growth. She hired a solid group of new sales representatives and skillfully blended them with the handful of experienced sales people who were returning for fall semester. She broke down barriers by bringing everyone

together at the start of the school year in a daylong team-building exercise. A key outcome was improved teamwork and a shared sense of purpose. Jennifer is a skilled manager and communicator. She is in contact with her sales staff every day, asking questions, resolving problems and encouraging them to grow their account lists through cold calling and prospecting. Her own selling experience has been invaluable in coaching and advising newer members of the staff. She also maintains a close working relationship with the graphics manager and serves as a liaison between the two departments. As a result, she’s been able to minimize any conflicts that might result between sales and the creative side of our newspaper. This was a particularly troublesome area last year when conflict was the norm between graphics and sales. Jennifer has excelled in all of her job responsibilities. She runs the day-to-day operations of the advertising department flawlessly. Whether it’s calculating the sales reps quotas, dummying the ads or dealing with the numerous challenges associated with publishing a daily newspaper, Jennifer has performed at an exceedingly high level and well beyond our expectations. Because of this, I’m able to focus more of my attention as the general manager on other areas of the newspaper where leadership and performance is lacking. Jennifer is thorough, attentive to detail and understands the importance of taking care of our customers. While these qualities may sound mundane, they are indispensable in our success as a student newspaper. Jennifer is conscious of this and sets high standards in everything she does. Her warm, friendly personality has made her popular with her peers and professional staff. She sets an example for other students and is poised for a successful career after graduation. Sincerely,

Alan Donnelly General Manager, Student Publications Washington State University

To Whom It May Concern: It is my pleasure to recommend my manager Jennifer Pastores for Sales Manager of the Year. I am a junior at Washington State University and have worked with and under Jennifer for two years. Jen, as her peers call her, and I started out in the same position at The Daily Evergreen and have learned and grown together. Through innovative incentives and unique selling strategies, she has created a sales team that both respects her and envies her. For example, for our winter sales specials, Jen got a local business to donate several items to raffle off to her sales people. The more you sold the better gift you were eligible to receive. Jen also made herself present at weekly sales training meetings for us to ask her any questions and for her to keep us informed of recent developments with the paper. Her bright and cheerful disposition made it a comfortable yet professional work environment for her sales staff, including myself, to meet monthly goals and quotas. Jen is also an active member of the community. She participates in intramural sports as well as volunteers. The Daily Evergreen is a part of the Adopt a Highway foundation, and even though people on the sales staff our less than motivated to help, she seems to add a specific enjoyment to the fact that you are actually picking up trash. The best attribute that Jen has a sales manager is the fact that she is willing to learn with you and be one of your peers with holding an authority position. I highly recommend my friend and supervisor for Sales Manager of the Year for the 2006/07 school year. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns. Sincerely, Lisa Corpolongo Account Executive The Daily Evergreen Washington State University 509-335-3552 adrep12@dailyevergreen.com
