PR Program PUBLIC RELATIONS EFFORT: As with any other media, we are fighting to maintain our share of the pie, and to drive readers to our pages. Every year we seem to face more and more outside media and internet options competing for our core readers This year we focused on a public relations blitz: Get our name in front of students as often as possible in as many forms as possible…and get them in the paper as often and as much as possible to get them to pick it up.

Our overall goal was to promote awareness of our print product, Central Michigan Life & our online product, www.cm-life.com. Our efforts include projects, events, sponsorships and activities for both campus and community audiences. Our secondary goal was to partner with campus groups and community organizations to involve them with Central Michigan Life creating a bond, and hopefully, lead to more, or at least continued readership.

We hired two Public Relation Interns to oversee the completion of all our projects. Their responsibilities in general were to: 1) Coordinate events and activities; serve as liaisons between Central Michigan Life and campus departments; attend community organizational meetings and activities. 2) Run reader promotions and contests; 3) Online forum postings; blogs; building a Facebook presence; 4) Gorilla marketing such as classroom chalkboards; sidewalk chalking; flyer and poster distribution on campus; etc.

The overall efforts were successful. There was an improvement in cooperation between departments such as Athletics, Minority Student Services, and University Recreation; as well in the community with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. Rack returns were between 5-10% and online readership was up by the same amount.

Advertisers were seeing the results of eyes on pages, and advertising revenue was up more than 19% over 2006.

(Sample attached). Partnership effort with the Athletic Department. Brings the local business community and the student body together for a big party. Businesses hand out freebies, and give away door prizes. Athletics pumps up the crowd with a big pep assembly. This is all planned the day before the first home football game. More than 8,000 students attend. CM LIFE gives away coupon books filled with offers from local businesses and foam footballs. This is our biggest event of the year. CM LIFE advertising, editorial and public relations staff works the CM LIFE booth. This is a great event for interaction with our community readers as well.

November COMMUNITY: SAGINAW CHIPPEWA TRIBAL OBSERVER. In honor of Native American Month and as part of a University effort in building relations with our namesake tribe, CM LIFE inserted their monthly newspaper in our paper. This gave our campus readers insight to the Tribe’s daily operations. In turn, we were able to exchange our paper with their readers, introducing CM LIFE to community members who may have never seen our paper.

EVENT: HOUSING FAIR. This event is held on campus and hosted by Central Michigan Life. We promote this event with full-page advertisements, chalkings, posters and flyers throughout campus. We bring more than 2,000 students in to talk with area apartment complexes and landlords. CM LIFE has a table and hands out our Apartment Life magazine. This event is a public relations effort for our largest group of advertisers… apartment complexes makes up 10 of our top 20 accounts. This free event is a thank you to them for their loyal business.

EVENT: ROCK THE ROSE. Partnership with Athletic Department to bring fans to Rose Arena for special sports dates: Women’s Basketball, Men’s Basketball, Wrestling, Gymnastics and Volleyball. Food, giveaways, etc. CM LIFE provided the promotional partnership.

CMCH receives medical recognition from governor

Student wins Midway arcade game, United Way raises money Jarrett Rowlett’s Kesseler residence hall room has an addition many others don’t — an arcade game.

The Howell sophomore won the Midway arcade game after buying a $1 raffle ticket last week for the United Way Fundraiser Drive.

“I was in class when they called my phone, I checked my messages when I got out and was like ‘sweet,’” Rowlett said.

The Midway machine stands about 5 feet tall, displaying 12 original arcade versions of the most popular Midway games on a 14 inch full-color monitor.

The drawing for the game took place Sept. 18.

This year was United Way’s fourth annual silent auction and the committee decided to do something different.

“We pulled one item out of the silent auction and used it as

a raffle to generate more money,” said Mary Lou Morey, coordinator of media and marketing and United Way committee member.

The game was first put on display at the CMU United Way Kickoff event, which took place in Central Park. Later it was also exhibited at the Student Activity Center and the Towers while raffle tickets were being sold.

Morey said the arcade game was donated by JCPenney and has a value of $500.

Rowlett said he told his friends he was going to win the arcade game when he was buying his raffle ticket. They didn’t believe him, he said.

“So I told them ‘I’m going to win and when I do, you can’t play it,’” Rowlett said, jokingly.

Rowlett said he has already played most of the games the arcade contains.

“The games are pretty old school, but still fun,” he said.

However, Rowlett said he is disappointed the game doesn’t have PAC-Man. “Everyone wants PAC-Man,” Rowlett said.

The arcade raffle raised $830 for the United Way. “That is just wonderful. Really at a silent auction we would only make $150, so this was a very good outcome,” Morey said.

“I’m so excited that a CMU student won the game, he seemed really happy.”

Proceeds from the Fund Drive Silent Auction and raffle went to agencies that United Way supports, including Meals On Wheels and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

The Fund Drive will conclude on Oct. 13.

Group helps with eating disorders

Students struggling with eating disorders have a new place to turn to for support at CMU. Doing Life, a support group, works to help students who have already been in treatment for their eating disorders. “(It is to) connect people with others who are trying to make healthy decisions,” said Lisa Donahue-Smith, Counseling Center counselor and Doing Life facilitator.

Donahue-Smith said the group is new and not modeled after any other program.

Counselors and directors knew it wasn’t an easy task for students to actually live out the healthy eating habits promoted to them during their eating disorder treatment, she said.

Doing Life was formed to be a positive outlet for those who have done well in their treatment — reinforcing the healthy

eating habits they have learned, as they step back into their daily routines. “(It will) evolve as the needs of the individuals evolve,” she said.

The support group will take attendance, but all records will be kept confidential. There is no charge for students and meetings will be 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays in Foust Hall room 103 through Dec. 4.

Students with conflicting schedules can meet with Donahue-Smith and work out a time to meet one-on-one.

Roschelle Heuberger, assistant professor of Human Environmental Studies, said binge eating disorders are the most common in the nation.

“All respond differently to different methods of treatment,” Donahue-Smith said.

Donahue-Smith said she hopes this program allows students to become connected with other students who are going through the same difficul-

ties with eating. She said she also hopes to break down barriers and have students hold each other accountable for a healthy lifestyle.

Michelle Bigard, assistant professor and Counseling Center counselor, said there are many benefits to joining a support group.

“They can share what has worked for them, publicly stating their commitment to recovery,” she said.

Doing Life works to promote the continuation of a healthy eating lifestyle for those who are motivated to live a healthy lifestyle with food as they transition back into their everyday lives.

Donahue-Smith said she can help anyone who may have a friend they suspect has an eating disorder and can refer students to therapists and dietitians in the area, as well as inpatient treatment centers and long-term treatment.

Coleman will donate her raise, $15,500, to the university for scholarships to go to graduate and professional students.

Coleman, who is about to begin her second five-year term as president, is earning more than $500,000 a year. Including bonuses and retirement pay, Coleman’s yearly salary is closer to $758,000.

Michigan football player acquitted in exposure trial LaTerryal Savoy, receiver for Michigan’s football team, was found not guilty of indecent exposure charges Friday, according to mlive.com.

According to University police, a 21-year-old Ann Arbor woman alleged that Savoy exposed himself to her inside Michigan Stadium on July 23.

The jury was out Friday for just more than a half hour.

“The evidence was simply not there,” said Nicholas Roumel, Savoy’s attorney.

Roumel said his client would never do something like that.

If found guilty, Savoy would have faced up to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

Alleged Western streaker charged A 23-year-old Western Michigan University student who allegedly streaked during a Sept. 8 game was arraigned Friday, according to the Kalmazoo Gazette.

The student, Eric Worthington, told a sheriff’s deputy he streaked as part of a bet he could not back down from.

Worthington pleaded not guilty to charges Friday.

The Assistant Chief of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s department said they have Worthington’s entire run on tape.

Worthington’s blood-alcohol content was at .16 percent at the time of his arrest, twice the legal limit. He is scheduled to be back in court on Oct. 3.

“Choosing the right president for this university is critical,” Sidlik said.

EMU professors have asked to have more pull in the selection of the University’s president.

Ken Rusiniak, a professor of psychology, told the Board of Regents that professors will prove a tremendous resource in the search.

Improvements at Central Michigan Community Hospital have earned the hospital a statewide award.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm recently recognized the area hospital in two categories; surgical care and bar coding.

The hospital, at 1121 South Drive, implemented several surgical improvements in 2006.

Among the areas of improvement are the administration of antibiotics and blood clot prevention.

The hospital also has worked with cardiac medications, skin preparation before surgery and maintaining body temperature after surgery.

Bar coding is another constantly-improving system for the hospital. The bar codes keep track of patients and what medicines can and cannot be used on each one.

“Patients are safer because of the bar coding at CMCH,”

Deb Marshall, quality improvement analyst at CMCH said Deanna Knopp, R.N. and vice president of patient care.

“Information technology has changed the complexion of health care.”

The hospital’s medical error rate is .48 for every 100 patients of adjusted admissions.

For comparison, the national average is two for every 100.

“The system is working very well,” Knopp said.

The hospital’s patient bar coding system has been so successful that it is now being used in other areas of the hospital, such as in the lab for blood test identification.

“The future is wide open,” said Ruth Chapman, informatics specialist and R.N. In 2003, Michigan introduced the Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Patient

Safety and the Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting for hospitals which send in data regularly on their progress and meet certain criteria toward progress.

It is the second time CMCH hospital has earned the governor’s award since it was introduced in 2003, the first was in 2004. The hospital is one of 79 hospitals and 29 critical-access hospitals in Michigan to receive the award this year. There are at least 189 hospitals in the state, according to the American Hospital Directory.

Meteorology program heats up

CMU’s meteorology program is making a meteoric rise.

The program is the only one of its kind in the state and is gaining popularity.

“There’s a lot of interest in the program,” said Leigh Orf, assistant geography professor.

“It was a lot of work getting the program on the books, but it was worth it.”

Meteorology became available to students as a major in fall 2006.

The curriculum is landing students jobs at the National Weather Service and in the private sector, while some go on to graduate school.

“It is a difficult market, but not insurmountable,” Orf said.

“Our students are getting jobs.

I want my students to be happy with their career choice.”

Mount Pleasant senior Chris Snider said he is pleased with his occupational decision.

“It’s a great program, very comprehensive,” Snider said. “There are a wide variety of classes.”

Snider said the university has a thriving meteorology club.

CMU’s Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, headed by Leroy junior Morris Langworthy, is increasing in membership.

“It’s really growing like crazy,” Langworthy said. “The club’s size has almost doubled the past two years.”

The registered student organization has around 50 members and meets 9 p.m. Tuesdays in Dow 270.

The university has responded to the increasing demand by adding a new professor to teach meteorology, geography faculty Martin Baxter. Baxter teaches students how to analyze large-

scale weather patterns and supervises national weatherpredicting tournaments for interested students.

The program educates students on how to make weather predictions in the field.

“You can’t predict weather if you can’t understand it,” Baxter said.

Orf said the program is still new and needs some tweaking.

Post-college marketability is important to Orf. “I try to make my students as prepared as possible, wherever they’re going,” he said. “We’re really determined to make this a successful program.”

Snider said he’s had several internship positions in multiple states.

“It makes you more marketable,” he said. “You’re more competitive getting a job.” news@cm-life.com

CMU expecting state payments

CMU officials on Tuesday said they anticipate the university will soon get its delayed $7.5 million August payment from the state.

Director of Media Relations Steve Smith said he expects CMU to receive the payment Oct. 16, as a result of the continuation budget Michigan legislators approved Monday following a brief partial shutdown.

“Our stance right now is that we are expecting to receive the August payment,” said Barrie Wilkes, interim vice president of finance and administrative services.

Smith said CMU also should receive the expected October payment of $7.5 million because of the continuation budget.

“That would tell us we’re going to get it sooner rather than later,” said Kathy Wilbur, vice president of government

Rep. Bill Caul, R-Mount Pleasant, said he is concerned about the effects of a tax increase even while he’s pleased the state avoided an extended shutdown.

“When people realize the full impact of a tax increase, and the tax on services, I definitely think there are too many things getting taxed,” he said.

But Gov. Jennifer Granholm said in a press conference Michigan has the fourth lowest income tax rate in the country, even with the increase.

Legislators on Monday increased the income tax from 3.9 percent to 4.35 percent, the highest increase since the 1980s for Michigan income tax. Michigan is one of six states with a flat income tax rate.

The sales tax also was extended to various services.

Reforms adopted in Monday morning’s agreement will last into the future, Granholm said.

“These were tough votes,” she said. “But they had to be done as well — cuts, reforms, and revenue on some selected services and an income tax increase that restores us just below where we were in 1999. Taxpayers over the long haul will see (the) benefit of reforms and not having the things they value cut.”

While a temporary agreement was worked out, specifics still need to be decided on.

“The work we’ll do now is make sure dollars go where they

Rep. Bill Caul, R-Mount Pleasant, said he will do what he can to ensure CMU and other universities get their delayed funding.

“I will work hard to make sure they receive that payment,” he said.

However, in addition to the $7.5 million August payment, the state also rescinded $1.39 million from its June payment to CMU. “The people that head up all of the different budget centers have until the middle of the month to report to (University) President (Michael) Rao where they would recommend the $1.4 million come from,” Smith said.

Smith said CMU now receives $10 million less from the state than it did five years ago.

“This isn’t something you’re seeing nationally, this is something you’re seeing in Michigan,” he said.

Michigan’s unemployment rate, 7.4 percent, is the high-

est in the country.

“We’ve had a one state recession going on here for a couple of years,” Wilkes said.

CMU will not know how much of the funding will be cut and how the cuts will affect the university until the state makes a final decision.

Smith said CMU’s academic programs will be the last thing cut.

Smith said Rao also is committed to keeping class sizes and student to faculty ratio at the same levels. Cuts likely will be in the student service court and student career services, he said.

“Basically you’d have longer lines,” Smith said. “(Services will) not (be) as readily available.”

Smith said the University Budget Advisory Council would discuss the situation and decide how to allocate the cuts.

The new budget includes $440 million in cuts.

Gary Peters, CMU’s Griffin Endowed Chair of American Government, said legislators and the governor have been working for months and it was time to make decisions and compromises.

“You know it’s a good agreement when no one’s happy,” he said.

Sen. Alan Cropsey, R-DeWitt, said there was no need for the threat of a shutdown.

“For the governor to threaten shutdown is unconscionable,” Cropsey said. “This governor contrived it to happen this time around.”

Leslee Fritz, spokesperson for the State Budget Office, said the combined taxes will cost an average family of four $1 per week.

She said a $200 million surplus from the Michigan Business Tax also was taken from a rainy day fund.

In the 30-day continuation period, the legislature needs to finalize the budget and determine funding level for education and the rest of state government.

“Leaders in the legislature and governor agreed there would be a 1 percent funding increase for higher education and community college, but it won’t be official until signed,” Fritz said.

“I can’t keep adding to my

costs,” he said. “I feel like I’m cheating my customers.”

Alwood said small business owners continue to be pushed into corners because of a lack of lobbying ability. He said he hoped the government would have shut down, forcing the legislature to regroup and rethink its options.

“They (government officials) could cut their own wages for a year or two,” Alwood said.

Sarah MacDonald, owner of Simply Weddings, a wedding planning service, said she is not worried about the tax.

She said she only charges her customers 10 percent of the total wedding cost.

“I don’t think it’ll affect me that much because it is such a minute amount,” she said. news@cm-life.com

Five people inducted into Journalism Hall of Fame

Central Michigan University’s Journalism Hall of Fame wall in Moore Hall gained a few faces Saturday.

The sixth-annual induction ceremony in Bovee University Center’s Rotunda honored five people who have helped CMU’s journalism program.

Inductee Lorrie Lynch, a 1975 graduate and Central Michigan Life alumna, said she chose to attend CMU in large part because of its journalism program.

“I found a home in Anspach Hall, in the dungeon,” she said. “I found professors that I respected and admired. On the other side of it I found really crazy fun colleagues to put out a newspaper with.”

Unlike Lynch, inductee John Grogan, 1979 graduate and CM Life alumnus, did not choose CMU. “The truth is CMU picked me and was the only university to pick me,” he said. “I was a slacker high school student with mediocre grades and not a very impressive application package but somebody at the Admissions Office saw some kind of spark there and decided to take a chance on this kid, and right from the start it was a good match. I instantly felt at home here.”

Fortunately for Grogan, his education in journalism coupled with courses in creative writing helped him write the top non-fiction hardcover book of 2006: “Marley & Me.” Storytelling can come in different forms, said inductee Steve Jessmore, a 1981 graduate and CM Life alumnus.

“I never considered myself to be just a photographer,” Jessmore said. “Pictures are more than pictures. They do tell stories.”

C. Marshall Matlock, a 1967 graduate and CM Life alumnus, also was inducted.

However, not all of the inductees were CMU graduates.

“The speakers know about their culture so they will be able to talk about Native American issues,” Green said. “It is a great way to educate everyone on the campus. People can learn about how we treat each other, how we think, the traditions we have, and the issues we have had to overcome.”

Jones said the events remind students of the importance of Native American history.

“Sometimes we say things and do things without realizing that we are stereotyping. This month allows us to celebrate their culture,” said Jones.

Green believes celebrating Native American culture is important, especially for CMU. “The month allows us to become invested in what the culture brings with the name of the ‘Chippewas,’” Green said. “Being a Native American myself, I find this fundamental for life.”

December 10, 2007 To: CNBAM From: Jackie Kimmel Daily Titan Promotions Manager Re: Category 4A: Newspaper Marketing/Promotions Plan California State University, Fullerton celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007. With the university hosting events weekly, we at the Daily Titan thought it would be best to base our 2007 promotions around this historic event in CSUF history.

As a staff we decided to take our budget of $3,000 and put it mainly into promotional events and promotional items. We also created a new link on our Web site specifically dedicated to the 50th and created numerous house and online ads to drive traffic to the site.

We also had new Adrax put in around campus to help get the word out.

Some of the promotional programs we put together included: a newsroom open house for alumni, the creation of a special Daily Titan Front Covers coffee table book highlighting all the great covers of the Daily Titan in the last 50 years, the creation of a Daily Titan 50th Anniversary issue using advertising from on-campus and campus supporters with a detailed history of the university, assisted in sponsoring the CSUF “Concert Under the Stars” fundraiser, and participated in the mock elephant races on campus to commemorate the 1st Intercollegiate elephant races held on our campus back in 1963. Because of the promotions the advertising staff had its highest grossing sales topping over $150,000.00.

Each of the events mentioned above had great success and an overwhelming turnout.

For our promotional items we used our newspaper mascot paperboy “Gus” and added th the 50 Anniversary logo to his design and put him on all our promotional items which included: shirts, hats, holiday ornaments (gold ornaments to signify the 50th) and pens.

We also had a five-foot color foamboard cutout made of “Gus” to take to all on campus events such as the university’s semi-annual Discoverfest. It has become a hot item to have a photo taken with our mascot.

In addition to the events we held we also used some of our more popular promotions such as a Halloween coloring contest where participants color our chosen Halloween character using any material that can stick to the page incorporating the 50th Anniversary logo. A new promotion we started this year was a Sudoku puzzle contest for movie passes.

We partnered with DreamWorks to receive screening passes and handed them out based on the correct answer to Sudoku puzzles on a first come first served basis, over a period of four days. Every morning we were giving away prizes for the Sudoku contest we had a line of potential winners lined down our hallway waiting for the office to open to win.

We also have an interactive survey on our Web site to promote one of our special sections the “Best of Fullerton” guide. We have people go online and fill out their favorite shopping and entertainment venues and restaurants and we pick winners to receive two parkhopper passes to Disneyland (which is seven miles from campus). We also had our production manager create a banner to put out on MySpace to get more people involved with the promotion.

Our two best promotions were directly related to the 50th Anniversary. One was the Daily Titan Front Covers Coffee Table Book and the Daily Titan’s 50th Anniversary issue.

For the coffee table book we had staff members from the different decades review the Daily Titan archives and put together a list of the best and most newsworthy covers the Titan ever published. As for the 50th Anniversary issue it was the largest special section the Titan has ever produced printing 20,000 copies and distributing the entire year both in the newspaper and in special racks placed all over campus and at local businesses.

Overall, the Titan’s promotional plan for 2007 was to hit the history books and promote our paper by highlighting what CSUF has accomplished over the last half century and educate our student body about the roots of our university.

Daily Titan Promotional Calendar January 2007 *Welcome back promotion included chalking “Welcome Back” messages all over campus promoting our updated 50th Web site. *Participation in the University’s Discoverfest club day.

February 2007 14th- Valentines grams printed in paper, and grand prizewinner announced.

March 2007 *Easter Coloring Contest advertisements run in paper and posters placed on campus. The winner of the contest won an iPod. April 2007 27th- 5th Semi-Annual Daily Titan Reverse Press Conference. This press conference is where the readership of the Titan can publicly question and comment on the contents (both editorial and advertising) of the paper. This event happens every semester due to turnover of student staff.

May 2007 Graduation Guide promoted. The graduation guide was designed for graduating students to buy ad space to write yearbook style goodbye messages or for parents/family to buy to wish the graduates luck. The guide is printed in the paper and distributed at graduation.

June 2007 *To connect with the community the Daily Titan hosted an event called “Kids to College” where 80-100 inner city kids came to learn about how to be successful in school to be able to attend college someday. The paper hosted the event teaching the students about both advertising and editorial departments and planned interactive activities such as writing editorials about what they had learned, and drawing advertisements. Winners were chosen and a spread was dedicated to the event in the Summer Titan.

August 2007 *Welcome back promotion included chalking “Welcome Back” messages all over campus promoting our updated 50th Web site. *Participation in the University’s Discoverfest club day. *The Daily Titan participated in the mock elephant races to celebrate the first elephant races back in 1963.

September 2007 * Suduko Promotion. The reader to successfully complete all of our suduko puzzles and bring them to the Titan would receive a Daily Titan prize. *The Daily Titan participates in the CSUF Concert of the Stars alumni fundraiser.

October 2007 *The Daily Titan’s 50th Anniversary issue is published and distributed to all students, faculty and staff. It is also distributed all year with special bins all over campus.

* Halloween Coloring Contest. This contest is the same as the Easter coloring contest where readers would cut out the outline of a witch and decorate it with anything that sticks to the page and turn it into our offices.

November 2007 *Best of Fullerton promotion begins to get student’s opinions on what their favorite Fullerton places to shop are located. For filling out a survey (either online or on hard copy in our office) students have the chance to win two park-hopper passes to Disneyland.

December 2007: *6th Semi-Annual Daily Titan Reverse Press Conference. Columnist’s remarks show oblivion to state of campaign I would like to make a couple of comments regarding Aaron Gott’s Oct. 5 column, “Republicans are doomed.”

To begin with, this is without a doubt one of the worst, shallowest, most pathetic attempts at an intelligent analysis of the Republican presidential field out there.

Not only is it insulting to read such immature statements referring to Gov. Mike Huckabee as “Huck” and his “redneck-taxcutting programs” in Arkansas — I’m a native of Little Rock — and Gov. Mitt Romney’s “kinda-Christian” religion, but Gott’s dismal effort to show a

semblance of intelligence in the field of American politics is the greatest insult.

Frankly, it would appear as though Gott is completely oblivious to most national polls indicating a substantial Giuliani lead, judging from his comments to the contrary based on the former New York City mayor’s decision not to participate in the straw poll.

Also, a fun fact for all you legitimate-information-starved Daily readers, the Ames Straw Poll was first held in 1979, and in the last four polls, (excluding this year’s, since the general election has not taken place)

the straw poll has only picked the Republican primary winner twice, once in 1995 and again in 1999.

To sum up, I think that it is in the best interest of the students of Iowa State that the Daily stop publishing Gott’s incredibly horrid attempts at legitimate journalism.

It’s insulting to me as a Republican, but also as a student of political science who is learning at the same institution as Gott.

Vigils for abuse victims to mark Week Without Violence

O

ct. 22 through 27 has been designated the Week Without Violence.

Also, the month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To honor and recognize these, I would like to ask readers to consider my perspective on the question: What would a week without domestic violence look like?

I have worked at Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support as an advocate for domestic violence victims for nearly five years. In that time, I have learned every case is different.

The crime of domestic violence is very personal. The perpetrator purposely exploits the victim’s personal vulnerabilities.

Each victim suffers in her, or his, own way.

With that said, there are, unfortunately, consistent themes that I have seen as well. Things that could be eliminated if domestic violence were to end.

So, in a week without domestic violence, these are the things I

would not see: Each week, our shelter houses an average of 15 people, mostly women, and a good portion of them children.

We talk with our residents about their safety. We try to break down the sense of shame and hopelessness they have. They have done nothing wrong, but they carry guilt for what has happened to them, to their families.

We sit with them as they make countless calls trying to get their lives in order. Many call trying to find an apartment or house to rent. They’re unable to afford the rent, or being told no because their credit was damaged by their abuser.

We sit with them while they sort through the papers or look online for a job. Some are lucky and find one that will pay them a living wage. Many can’t take a job because the pay is too low, or they can’t find the child care they need.

We talk with them about their fear. We listen to the 20 voicemails that her abuser has left for

her, in just four hours, begging for her to come back, intertwined with constant threats and manipulation.

We offer no judgment as they contemplate returning to their abuser, because it seems easier than facing the fear of starting over or explaining to their children that they will not go home again.

Each week, our advocates respond to 30 to 40 crisis calls.

Some just call to figure out if they are in an abusive situation. Others know their life is at risk, and are ready to leave. Others don’t know or can’t see they’re at risk.

We try to encourage these victims to come to a support group or call the police. We know any decision they are facing is extremely intimidating. They know best how their abuser will respond. They may have tried reaching out for help before, and paid a price.

We are forced to hang up, not knowing whether they will get through the night, or have a chance to call again tomorrow.

Each week, six survivors of abuse come to our support group. They get to tell their personal stories and be with other women — and from time to time, a man — who understand.

Each week, five teens come to our teen support group.

These teens process what it was like growing up in the midst of domestic violence, and how they hope it won’t happen to them as they become adults.

We know one in four of them will be in a violent relationship, or we know some of these girls will leave here and choose to use drugs, hurt themselves or run away, to try to escape the pain they are constantly feeling.

Each week, somewhere in Iowa, a person may die as a result of domestic violence.

We know this is true, because since October of last year, 18 people have died.

Each week, we hope it isn’t someone we know. We hope we can offer enough support so it doesn’t happen here.

Each week, we hope we are

doing something to eliminate the need for our jobs. Because, all though we all are here to do something we love, we would walk away in a minute if there were no need for someone to call, for someone to get safe, for someone to get a protective order, or for a family to escape the violence.

Each week, our staff and volunteers go home after their shift and try not to think about the people we serve. We try not to think about the woman we talked to on the phone today, the woman who won’t sleep tonight, because every noise makes her think he might be out of jail.

She won’t sleep, because she is thinking about the trial in a few months, and how she will have to try to prove to a jury that she is worth believing, even when he is the one charged with the crime.

We try not to think that a child who saw his mom getting hit may come to the conclusion someday that he can be big and strong and powerful, just like Daddy.

We try to think that some-

thing we are doing, along with a community of police, courts, probation officers, counselors, nurses and social workers, may do something to stop the cycle of abuse.

In October, I invite the community to do something to think about the women, men and children impacted each day by domestic violence.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Ada Hayden Park, stories will be placed around the lake to remember the victims of domestic violence homicide, and pay respect to the daily survivors of domestic violence. From 6 to 8 p.m., ACCESS staff will be lighting luminaries at this location.

During the Week Without Violence, please visit one of the eight cafes on campus where coffee sleeves will provide information about what a Week Without Violence would look like.

Best Event or Promotion UNC Charlotte The University Times Promotion: “Pizza and a Paper” Seeing the need for increased readership and awareness, the Marketing Department at the University Times organized “Pizza and a Paper.” The event was held at noon on Thursday, August 30, 2007 at the Belk Tower in the heart of the UNC Charlotte Campus. The goal of the event was to put the University Times directly into the hands of students, faculty and staff.

Cici’s Pizza, a local eatery, donated 48 pizzas for the event, which meant a whopping 480 slices! At approximately 12:15 p.m., as students, faculty and staff passed the Belk Tower during class change, they were handed a slice of pizza, a flyer from Cici’s, and a copy of the current issue of the University Times. The pizza was gone within an hour!

Promotion for the event started approximately a week and a half in advance, although the event took a little less than a month to organize. The event was promoted through advertisements in the University Times issues before the event, as well as through handbills printed on colored paper and given to students a few days in advance.

A flashing online ad was placed on the front page of the student-run website www.nineronline.com that linked to a .pdf file of the ad running in the paper. Word of mouth played a big part as students talked about it in sales meetings a week before the event and encouraged those involved in other organizations to spread the word.

We had 12 yard signs made that read “FREE PIZZA Today at Belk Tower” and

placed them in strategic locations around campus the evening before the event.

The event was a huge success! It accomplished our goal of putting the paper into the hands of students, faculty and staff. It was extremely hot that day however, we had a little relief as Cici’s Pizza provided a 10 x 10 canopy to save us from the sun.

Cici’s found the event to be very beneficial, as they were able to be on campus within view of thousands of students and hand out their product as well as flyers.

Another benefit was that Student Media was able to build a relationship with Cici’s Pizza. The event was such a success, both entities look forward to making it happen once at the beginning of every semester. Readership stats went up by more than 10 percent in the weeks following the event.

Dear CNBAM Committee: The theme for this year’s promotional plan was consistency. At the beginning of the semester we chose three parameters that every promotion should adhere to. The first parameter was that every promotion must help The Kansan reconnect with the student body. The second was to utilize event marketing to foster new but potentially long-term business partnerships. The last was to build a persona for The Kansan and give our target market a “face” to correlate with our organization. This was done by implementing three large, overarching promotions, that lasted the duration of the Fall 2008 semester.

The first promotion of the semester was for The Kansan’s annual special section “Sex on the Hill.” This special section was awarded best in the nation at CNBAM last year, and we knew we had to exceed last year’s success. This popular section is risqué, but it is in direct compliance with the attitudes and lifestyle of our target market. We utilized a guerilla marketing campaign using print, online and event marketing to build anticipation for the section and the mystery event on the day of its release.

We implemented a four week plan for the campaign with the theme of “seventies adult film stars”. We took seven volunteer staff members and created a specific costume, name, and persona for each character. The first segment consisted of house ads individually starring each one of our characters. The ads were all created to look like the playbill to an old adult film. Each ad simply stated, “Sex on the Hill…coming Sept. 13th”.

Prior to the section’s run date we uploaded a custom one and a half minute flash presentation on the homepage of our website. It promoted the special section and the release party, as well as all involved partners. The day that “Sex on the Hill” ran we set up a tent on the main street of campus where the seven staff members dressed in full costume and passed out copies of the special section along with condoms and pamphlets on safe sex and testing to those who wanted them. A stereo looped our custom promospot providing atmosphere and promotion of that night’s event.

The event was held at a popular, local club named Abe and Jake’s. It was a seventies theme directly correlating to the campaign and all those in costume gained free admittance. The entire club was themed from the bartenders to the décor. Copies of the Special section were placed on tables all around the club and posters featuring our characters and The Kansan’s logo were placed above the bar. A large Kansan banner greeted patrons as they entered. The party was emceed by the promotions manager and one of the seventies characters. At the beginning of the event all the “adult film stars” were introduced to the audience with great response. And the end of the event gift bags with copies of “Sex on the Hill” as well as items and exclusive coupons from Kansan business partners were handed out. Our total expense for this event was $200 thanks to the close relationships we had built with our business partners. Our product and reach was more then enough to entice participation. The marketing promoting “Sex on the Hill” made it a very desirable product for our clients. The reps sold the event as added value to the special section increasing revenue from the previous year’s $10,253 to $18,711.

We wanted to maintain our status as with the students through event marketing, so we held a Halloween party at the same club that hosted our “Sex on the Hill” party. For this we partnered with Lifestylez Productions, a company that hosts Winter break ski trips. To be a part of this they donated a free all-inclusive ski trip and snowboard to the winner of our costume contest. They also donated over $1,500 in outerwear and other prizes. Once again the club was filled to capacity, and The Kansan branded itself as the campus organization for students.

We knew we had to maintain this momentum. The student body was excited about the “new” Kansan and we wanted to keep them involved. This led to our next promotion. KU’s largest rivalry is with the University of Missouri. The student body for over four years had been wearing rivalry shirts that were considered by the athletic department as “distasteful”. ESPN stated they would no longer show students on national television wearing these shirts. Athletics knew that The Kansan had the connection with the student body to change this. This was an incredible branding opportunity. We designed a promotional plan that lasted for almost two months and culminated with the Kansas-Missouri football game deciding the number one team in the nation.

To achieve this we opened up the promotion to the entire student body. We created a page on our website where students could submit their slogan ideas for a new tshirt. A grand prize of a limo ride to and from the game, front row tickets to the football game and $100 cash were offered. The four runners up received prize packages of iPods, cash and video games. The promotion was announced at football and basketball games throughout the two-month duration, as well as shown on the video boards where a prominent Kansan logo was displayed. This drove traffic to our website from both students and alumni who wanted to find out more. There were hundreds of submissions and a panel of judges from The Kansan and athletics chose the top five. The voting was then opened through The Kansan’s website and received over 1,400 votes. Voting was restricted to students only. The Kansan then negotiated a deal that placed our logo on all 2,200 of the shirts sold thus far, and the profit of each shirt was donated to charity. We had t-shirt distribution points in the basketball arena and in the bookstore store in the student union.

The response was overwhelming. A sports writer for the local paper wrote a story about The Kansan and the shirts that was placed front page and top of the fold in the sports section. A local television station’s sports program showed the shirt on air and The Kansan logo was easy to see. A mention of the shirt showed up on an AOL sports blog, and lastly the shirts were shown on the nationally televised “ESPN Gameday” the day of the Kansas and Missouri game. This allowed us branding on a national scale.

The opportunity to partner with athletics was a giant step for The Kansan. KU athletics is a closely guarded entity and corporations invest millions to be a part of KU sports. The relationship we built with athletics will be maintained for years to come, and we are elated to be a partner and brand ourselves with this great organization.

The promotional plan for this year was consistency. We consistently went big.

We consistently gave our target market exactly what they wanted. We consistently utilized innovative, outside of the box ideas, and this prototype will be maintained and improved upon for the rest of The Kansan’s existence. We wanted to shatter the norms of the industry and prove that radical methods of promotion were vital to this paper’s existence. Not only did it create incredible branding opportunities, but it created increased streams of revenue and improved our image with the students. Local businesses are excited to be a part of Kansan promotions and in return are excited to invest in this paper because the events and promotions held blatantly our reach. In the process of this we demonstrated the power of The Kansan’s family of products. In a time where critics question the validity of newspapers existence, The Kansan has proved that this medium can overcome all obstacles.

THE PITT NEWS NEWSPAPER MARKETING/PROMOTION PLAN The Pitt News’ overall marketing campaign was balanced between having fun with our readers while boosting readership, and community involvement with no intention of self-serving results. First, the fun part: Our T-shirts feature two stenciled zebras and a front line, “What’s black and white and reproduces 14,000 times a day?” The back of the shirt reads, “The Pitt News. We put out daily.” T-shirts were distributed at all of our university events: Pitt’s annual Student Activities Fair, Freshmen Orientation, Internship Café and all tabling events for student organizations. Students answered trivia questions about Pitt and The Pitt News (name the Editorin-Chief of The Pitt News; name two departments of The Pitt News; name the Chancellor, etc.) and were awarded with a T-shirt if they guessed correctly.

During the year, we “catch” people reading The Pitt News. If we see someone reading the newspaper, we give him or her one of our T-shirts and take his/her photo for a weekly house ad in the paper. Basic interview questions are posed and a model release is signed. Our readers have responded to the advertisements that feature other readers, and we have found that the numbers of readers has increased…especially right outside our front door, where a photographer just may exit. Free T-shirts are student magnets. Our shirts are all over campus, serving as an effective advertising vehicle for The Pitt News.

Results from the T-shirt campaign can only be measured in terms of rack returns. In 2006 returns ran around 10% daily. The returns have fallen this year to well below 5%, and we are now in the happy position of having to evaluate whether or not to boost our 14,000 daily circulation to 15,000, at which point we’ll need a new T-shirt.

Integrated throughout our publishing year, we are now trading with major Pittsburgh organizations in order to give away tickets and prizes to our readers. The Pittsburgh Zoo, The Pittsburgh Penguins, our amusement park Kennywood and the Pittsburgh Pirates have all traded tickets for space this year. We put trivia questions about those organizations into house ads, and the readers who come to the office with the correct answers are all entered in a raffle for tickets.

To help raise awareness of the critical importance of drinking responsibly, The Pitt News distributed coasters to all of our independent bars and taverns this year. Our slogan reads: Don’t get caught in The Pitt News’ Police Blotter. Drink Responsibly. Our advertisers love the coasters, most of which get stolen, and the University of Pittsburgh’s administration appreciates our public service message, especially since we allow alcohol advertisements to run in the paper.

Also on a philanthropic note, The Pitt News is collecting toys this year in conjunction with the U.S. Marines’ Toys for Tots program. Students and staff at the university are entered in a drawing for an iPod shuffle when they donate a toy, and the winner’s picture will be featured in our second semester’s Welcome Back issue. We are proud to have a huge bin of toys to haul downtown to the Marines after finals this semester. Our house ads have done their job; response has been generous.

Throughout the year, then, while we run house campaigns to collect for charities or to give away valuable tickets or really cheap T-shirts, this is the most important internal lesson for us to learn about our own product: Advertising in The Pitt News works. Even for us.

Introduction While it is the responsibility of news media to provide in-depth, accurate, and unbiased journalism for the community that they represent, it is often difficult to remember that these organizations are members of these communities as well. Because The Daily Pennsylvanian is the campus publication of the University of Pennsylvania with the greatest circulation and most comprehensive news coverage, we embrace the belief that it is our duty to become active participants in the events in which our community takes part, particularly if they represent a charitable cause. Furthermore, it serves as a reminder to our readers that we do not hesitate to embrace our community on a personal level, rather than being confined to dictating the news to students from a figurative ivory tower.

Keeping these philosophies in mind our newspaper decided to be the primary sponsor for the 2007 Relay For Life held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania on March 30, 2007.

The Relay For Life is an annual event held in locations all throughout the country in an attempt to raise money for the American Cancer Society to benefit cancer research. Teams of individuals are formed that participate in the event by staying overnight, walking with others to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, and by donating money in the form of individual entry fees (in addition to other money they may wish to provide). The following paragraphs will provide a breakdown of our plan with which we carried out our sponsorship.

Provision of Advertising Space Our sponsorship was made official through the execution of a “Sponsorship – Ad Trade Agreement” between representatives with decision making powers of The Daily Pennsylvanian and Relay For Life (see attached). While the specific details regarding the sizes and format of the advertisements can be found by referencing the contract, it is important to note that the provision of advertising space in our daily publication to Relay For Life was our only deliverable required by the agreement. Relay For Life employed various buzz marketing techniques to promote their event, but the only traditional form of media used for the marketing of their event was the advertising that was placed in our newspaper.

Event T-Shirts The first benefit earned by our newspaper for our sponsorship of the event was obtaining the largest and most prominent logo featured on the back of the t-shirts that worn by all of the participants throughout the duration of entire event. Every team member who participates in Relay For Life is provided a t-shirt upon their entry into the event and they are strongly encouraged to wear the shirt immediately to serve as an indication that the individual made a contribution to the success of the event. Individuals are also allowed to keep these shirts upon the completion of the event as well. Because so many members of the University community will wear the t-shirt both during and after the event, the dominant presence of our logo on their clothing will serve as a form of advertisement for our newspaper. Moreover, it is also create an association between our newspaper and a very important charity event in the minds of those who see the t-shirt.

“DP Hour” Another advantage gained by our sponsorship of Relay For Life was our ability to host an event during the Relay For Life ceremony. Our newspaper was granted a 45 minute time slot to

command the center stage and the attention of all of the event participants and do with the time what we pleased. Our marketing department decided to organize a “Quizzo” contest with questions that focused on the history of our newspaper and the University as a whole.

Before the day of the event it was our responsibility to obtain gift certificate donations from restaurants as a source of prizes for the winners of the contest (following the thought that offering a prize may serve as an additional incentive for participation), as well as, compose questions and determine the logistics for the event. Prior to the start of our contest, members of our marketing staff went around the venue generating interest about the contest in addition to having participants sign up to compete in the event. Once we had microphone access we were able to reach several more participants as well. Overall there were over twenty teams that chose to compete in the event, or over 100 individuals.

The greatest profit earned by our newspaper through this competition was the fact that we were the center of attention of the entire event for 45 minutes. Furthermore, the event was run by staff members of our newspaper, so it gave the members of our community the chance to interact with the people involved with the newspaper. This interpersonal interaction could serve as a way to help members of our community realize that our relationship to the community is no different than theirs and that we are students just like them. Without that common ground established it is more likely that the community may feel alienated from the publication.

Event Brochure Our newspaper won the right to print the brochure from the entire event and we did so by producing a four-page broadsheet in a similar format to which our newspaper is regularly printed (see attached). The brochure included a letter from the event chairs, a map of the venue, a schedule of events, a list of event participants, and several stories about the event’s history and cancer survivors. The brochure was handed out to participants as they entered into the venue (in addition to lanyards that featured the logo of our website).

By producing a brochure in the format of our standard print edition it served as an introduction to the newspaper for those who may not have been familiar with it. Furthermore, it acted as a reminder to our readers about the presence of our newspaper on campus and of our awareness of the community. Again, it was also a great way to have our name exposed.

Conclusion This was the very first time that our newspaper had attempted to sponsor this event and all signs show that it was a very big success for both parties. The 2007 Relay For Life raised $137,000 towards cancer research, which shattered the previous year’s total of $46,000. Moreover, the members of this year’s planning committee eagerly approached us ahead of time for the 2008 event to work out another deal similar to that of 2007. This event was a fantastic way for our newspaper to become more involved in the community and we hope to be involved with this event, and others, in the future.

elcome to the 2007 Relay For Life at the University of Pennsylvania! This is an event that has seen tremendous growth since its inception four years ago, and we are extremely happy that you are here to join us in this celebration of life and the endurance of human spirit.

We all know at least one person in our lives who has been affected by cancer. They are the reason that we are here tonight.

We come to pay our respects to those who have passed away due to cancer, and we also come to honor the survivors who have won their battles.

We also thank the survivors who have joined us tonight for coming and being willing to share their personal stories of hope during tonight’s survivor ceremonies.

We encourage you all to talk to our survivors and to learn their stories, for they are true inspirations to our cause.

This year, we have set tremendous records for the number of participants and the amount of money raised for tonight. Tonight, you are all participants in the biggest Relay of Penn’s history. You are the reason that the success of Relay at Penn has skyrocketed and will continue to grow in the years to come. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington, as the City of Destiny Classic 24Hour Run Against Cancer.

Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, made a difference. In the mid-1980’s, he wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed - running marathons.

n Dr. Gordy Klatt was a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma n In 1985, Klatt spent 24 hours circiling the track, with friends paying $25 to join him for 30 minutes. He raised $27,000 n A year later, the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer saw 19 teams participate and raised $33,000 In May 1985, it all began.

Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or

walk 30 minutes with him.

He raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as See HISTORY, page 2

Relay For Life 2004

Relay For Life first started at the University of Pennsylvania through an initiative of IvyCorps, a community service coalition between seven of the eight Ivy League schools.

They adopted that all of their member universities would take on a Relay For Life fundraiser, and in the spring semester of 2004 one was quickly organized by students from Penn.

Although it ended up being a small event and cut short due to a rainstorm, Relay had

successfully been established at the University of Pennsylvania.

In its second year, Relay grew to a bigger event, and even though rain forced everyone inside to the Palestra, a successful second year was marked by even more participants and even more money raised for cancer research and advocacy.

By helping here, you’re aiding the ACS in their fight Following last spring’s highly successful 3rd Annual Relay For Life at Penn, its organizers established the University of Pennsylvania chapter of Colleges Against Cancer in order to increase Penn’s involvement in helping to eliminate cancer.

CAC, the college branch of the American Cancer Society, was founded by three students at the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University and has now spread to over 200 campuses.

The organization works to unite students, faculty, and staff who are dedicated to the fight against cancer by supporting programs of the ACS. CAC’s mission comprises four strategic directions - advocacy, education, survivorship, and Relay For Life.

These efforts will assist the ACS in accomplishing its goals for the year 2015, including: reducing cancer incidence rates by 25 percent; reducing cancer mortality by 50 percent; and dramatically increasing the quality of life for cancer survivors. In order to aid in this

mission, Penn’s CAC chapter executed a skin cancer prevention campaign prior to spring break, providing students and faculty with healthy skincare information and free sunscreen.

Penn CAC has recently focused its efforts on the 4th Annual Relay For Life at Penn. While the event’s primary goal is raising money for cancer research and programs for survivors, Relay For Life also incorporates CAC’s other three objectives.

Tonight’s event will feature a Survivors’ Lap and Luminaria Ceremony, as well as provide survivors with further support by connecting them with American Cancer Society programs and resources. The evening will also include education and advocacy initiatives, so please stop by our advocacy and education tent to learn more.

much earlier than in prior years, and many students groups from across campus formed teams and raised money. Students pitched tents on the field and many enjoyed the University’s first overnight Relay.

Enter t ainment was pro vided by Ryan Star, Bassline Productions, SkyView, Polyorchid Band, Sparks Dance Company, A mor phous Jugglers, Pennsylvania Six-5000, and Penn Dance. Participants also enjoyed a pie-eating contest, themed laps, and games on Franklin Field.

Throughout the night participants purchased luminaria bags, which were placed on the stands at Franklin Field and spelled out the word “HOPE!” Cand les inside the bags were lit, and a survivorship ceremony was lead by Kevin Rakszawski and Tony Yuen, two students from the University, who gave speeches about their experiences in their fight against cancer.

Participants stayed up all night long and everyone participated in a final lap just as the sun was rising over the city skyline.

Not just walking A look at some of the groups performing at this year’s Relay For Life ONDA LATINA In the fall of 1996, a small group of students had the vision to educate the Penn community about Caribbean and Latino culture through dance.

Together they founded Onda Latina, which means “Latin Wave,” Penn’s first and only dance group of its kind.

That very same semester, Onda gave its first performance as an exhibition for the Lambda Upsilon Lambda Thanksgiving Dinner.

Since then, Onda Latina has become an immensely popular name on this campus and the community, performing to soldout crowds every semester.

Over the years, the Onda Latina family has grown to over 40 members, which brings together many ethnic backgrounds, unique talents, and fresh ideas.

Our passion for dance, however, goes far beyond Penn’s campus.

Not only do we guest perform for various campus organizations and events, but we also spread our special flavor throughout the community and at other colleges and universities.

maintains a high technical level of many styles of dance including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, modern, lyrical, and character.

In addition to weekly technique classes, each semester culminates with a self-choreographed show.

Company members also perform at other popular campus events throughout the year.

In addition to all of these performance opportunities, SDC members have the chance to share their love of dance at various Philadelphia locales, such as the Salvation Army and the Ronald McDonald house, throughout the year.

MERCURY LANDING Mercury Landing is an independent rock band from New York City. Their inf luences range from classic rock and funk to jazz and blues.

This is the fourth year that Mercur y Landing has been involved with Relay For Life events, and they are on schedule this spring to play at 10 different Relays across the northeast.

THE GREAT UNKNOWN The Great Unknown is a group of young West Philadelphia musicians playing original American music with roots in country, folk, and blues. Their music has been described as “like Bob Dylan on too much caffeine” by Metro Philadelphia and has brought comparisons to The B and and Uncle Tupelo.

LIKE MINDZ Like Mindz is the hottest live hip-hop group at Penn. Their style is a combination of hiphop, soul, funk, dancehall, pop, jazz, and latin. With all-original lyrics and a mix of original and sampled beats, Like Mindz has continued to move crowds and turn heads since their inception in fall 2005.

Like Mindz is Nana Tuffuor, Dan Callahan, and Kristen Sock on vocals, Hayling Price on keyboards, Dan Caroff on bass, and Jason Edwards on drums.

THE CANON LOGIC In an otherwise stale sea of power chords and bands all cashing in on the same old pop/punk formula, the scene would kill for a breath of fresh air. That’s where The Canon Logic fits in.

The band takes alternative and indie inspired sounds and mixes them with synths, drum machines, and harmonies to melt over. Throw in an energized live performance and you have Philadelphia’s newest buzz-band. The Canon Logic aren’t just refreshing - they’re an ocean of rock and roll relief.

QUAKER GIRLS Quaker Girls Dance Team is the hip-hop performance group for the Penn Men’s Basketball Team. While Quaker Girls primarily dance at half-time, we

PENN DANCE Penn Dance was founded in 1975 as the first performing dance company at the University of Pennsylvania. To this day, we remain co-ed, studentrun and funded by the Student Activities Council.

Dancers in our company have been trained in a variety of styles of dance. Some of these include modern, ballet, jazz, tap, and even belly dancing.

A primarily modern dance group, Penn Dance often takes influences from other forms of movement, making each show unique and diverse in its styles.

Additionally, because each of our two annual shows are student-choreographed, their repertoire takes on the form created by our dancers.

All performances are created as a group, involving every dancer in lighting, costuming, and promoting each show. Members of the company receive professionally instructed lessons twice weekly, and perform a full-length dance concert every semester.

We also perform pieces created by professional choreographers from the Philadelphia area and dance in a wire variety of performing arts nights and campus events.

Throughout our history, we have strived to create a close community that constantly demonstrates professionalism and experience. Penn Dance is truly a close group of friends that love to share our experiences and passion of dance with each other.

This year Kevin will participate in the Relay For Life for the second time. Last year, the event took place during a significant point in his life.

“It was the week after my last treatment, so it was kind of like a celebration for me,” he explained.

And as a cancer survivor, Kevin has a message to give to other cancer patients: “My number one motto throughout treatment was to stay positive and stay strong,” and he was able to preserve with the love and support of his family and friends.

With many new cancer treatments becoming available, Kevin is optimistic for a cure.

“I’m very hopeful. It’s pretty close,” he said.

Kevin, who has been cancerfree since July of 2006, hopes that those hear about his bout with lymphoma are able to learn something.

“I hope to raise awareness that [cancer] is prevalent in the younger population,” he said.

Marketing Goals 2007-2008 To continue increasing readership, The Minnesota Daily has set the following goals for the coming year: • Look for creative ways to get the reader involved with The Minnesota Daily.

• Look for fresh and innovative ways to improve sales and increase awareness of The Minnesota Daily beyond the student population.

• Find ways to promote the organization’s awards and recognitions earned in previous years in order to improve The Minnesota Daily’s reputation and credibility.

• Work with sales to get existing and potential clients to participate in media trades that will excite readers.

Marketing Goals

Print edition The print edition of The Minnesota Daily is published every Monday through Friday throughout the school year, and every Wednesday during the summer. The Monday and Thursday issues contain special Sports and Arts & Entertainment sections respectively. The paper is in broadsheet format that allows for more news content and advertising, as well as a better use of color. The daily offers advertising space for retail and classified display clients, as well as classified linage.

Online edition The online edition of The Minnesota Daily, www.mndaily. com, has grown in popularity every day since its inception in 1995 and receives more than 12,500 impressions daily. The Web site contains the same content as the print edition, as well as content exclusive to the Internet. This exclusive content includes crossword puzzle solutions, article archives, weekly polls, the Drink and Dine page, textbook sales and multimedia coverage of newsworthy events. The online edition also offers advertising space in various formats and sizes to the same clients that run in the print edition.

Drink and Dine The newest addition to www.mndaily.com. This service offers the University of Minnesota community a search tool to find food and drink specials around campus based on specified criteria. In addition, this section of the Web site allows area restaurants and bars to advertise and post information about their organization for varying rates and durations.

Integrated Marketing Communications (IMCs) This program offers clients the opportunity to partner with The Minnesota Daily to create an advertising strategy that is specifically tailored to their needs using a wide variety of communication outlets that are available at The daily.

With IMCs, both The daily and the client benefit. Clients are given more opportunities to promote their business

with a variety of angles and a deeper penetration of the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s targeted market. The daily benefits from IMCs because they help to build relationships with clients. IMC components, aside from traditional advertising, are very profitable for the Daily. Examples of common IMC components (aspects of IMCs that do not include traditional print advertising) are MOE sightings, event sponsorship and rack advertising.

Rack Advertisements Daily clients have the opportunity to purchase advertisements to place on distribution racks throughout campus.

Rack advertisements are sold on a per semester basis and range in price depending upon the location. Rack advertisements are another way for our clients to penetrate the market deeper than with simply traditional print advertising.

Price The Minnesota Daily is free to the public if it is picked up at any of the drop sites in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area or accessed online at www.mndaily.com. However, if a reader does not have access to a drop site they can purchase a subscription to be directly mailed to them. This option is ideal for parents that want to remain involved in the news and events that affect their child at school.

Advertising Most promotional advertising can be done within The Minnesota Daily. Along with advertising, the Daily needs to ensure that its presence is felt by placing the Daily logo on all distribution racks and all printed materials. External advertising should be utilized as needed. Media trades should be the main means of obtaining this type of advertising.

Promotion The Minnesota Daily is unique in that it operates on three different levels: as a student organization, a business, and a product. Thus, to best promote the Daily, it is important to appeal to the market in variety of ways. This can be done most effectively by utilizing advertising, public relations, direct marketing opportunities and materials, promotions and events, premium marketing items and a well-informed sales force. All facets of the Dailyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s promotions should have a consistent message to ensure proper branding of the organization.

Public relations The majority of public relations opportunities will be handled by the Human Resources Department and the Office of the Publisher.

However, all marketing efforts should closely mirror the messages put out by both staffs and result in positive publicity.

Direct marketing and materials E-mail is the most efficient form of direct marketing and will be the primary medium

through which The Minnesota Daily partakes in direct marketing opportunities. Currently, a marketing newsletter, that includes updates on Daily events and promotions, is sent out to subscribed readers. This is a great way to foster communication between readers and the Daily.

The media kit serves as the main marketing material to clients and is updated every year. It details the specifics of our target market, prices and advertisement specifications for advertising in the paper and the basics of the organization. The kit comes in two forms: online PDF and print form.

Promotions and events One of the core elements to The Minnesota Daily’s marketing plan is promotions and events. Each event needs to be promoted through the paper and in a way that positively promotes the Daily brand. Along with branding efforts, these promotions need to have a specific purpose that either strives to promote an image of goodwill toward the campus community, an increased readership base or developing better relations with the current readers of the Daily.

Promotional items Promotional items are a great way to interact with readers and promote the Daily. The “I Get It Daily” T-shirt has made a big impact upon the target market and continues to be in high demand. Other items that will be used to promote the Daily this year are ID holders, pens, post-it notes and Frisbees.

Sales force A well trained and knowledgeable sales team is an integral part of The Minnesota Daily’s survival. It is important that

sales representatives maintain positive relationships with each of their clients and promote a positive image of the Daily. Marketing and sales should collaborate in ways that benefit clients, the Daily and its readers. A prime example of this collaboration is Date Night. Date Night combines the marketing department’s efforts to interact with readers and sales efforts to make clients happy by providing creative ways to advertise their products or services.

Place The Daily has two main distribution channels that can be divided into primary and secondary channels. The primary distribution channels are the distribution sites and racks and the secondary mode of distribution is subscriptions via mail. It is important that the Daily is easily accessible to anyone who would like to read it.

Primary channel: Drop sites The Daily has a total of 220 drop sites on and around the University, other college campuses and the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area. Drop sites should be audited on a regular basis and must include a detailed analysis of return rates to strategically place papers on racks and a record of the condition of the racks and rack advertisements.

Secondary channel: Subscriptions via mail Subscriptions are a means for people that live outside the reach of The Minnesota Daily to have access to the paper.

Subscriptions also are a way for readers to interact with the paper on a regular basis. Subscribers are generally loyal readers of the Daily and should therefore be highly valued.

Marketing Mix

Strengths Prestige – The Minnesota Daily has been around for over 100 years and has become an important part of the University of Minnesota’s history and culture. The University is very supportive of the organization and can be counted on to help ensure the Daily’s survival.

Market Size – The University of Minnesota is one of the nation’s largest universities and is located in one of the 15 largest metropolitan areas in the nation. These factors create a large base from which to draw new readers.

Recognized and Respected – The Minnesota Daily has won many awards throughout the years for its journalistic work.

These awards help reinforce the Daily’s image as a trustworthy news source for the student population, as well as the surrounding community.

Accessibility – With over 200 drop sites and www.mndaily. com, University of Minnesota students and other community members can easily access The Minnesota Daily.

Community Interaction – MOE sightings and sponsorship of campus events, such as Homecoming, make The Minnesota Daily highly visible to students and surrounding communities on a regular basis.

Innovation – The Minnesota Daily is constantly experimenting with new ideas that garner a larger and a more diverse readership. Weaknesses Budget – The limited budget restricts The Minnesota Daily from holding many large marketing events and promotions. In response, the Daily relies on the support from external organizations to carry out large promotional events.

Promotional Advertisements and Event Sponsorship – Strategic media trades and advertising campaigns that keep the readers interests in mind can further the relationship that The Minnesota Daily has with its audience.

Prospecting – New businesses around the University of Minnesota campus need exposure to the University population to ensure their survival. The Daily is a great venue for these businesses to launch advertising campaigns and participate in marketing events.

Threats Alternative Publications – Newspapers and periodicals that vie for the same audience as The Minnesota Daily remain a threat. With the popularity of alternative publications such as The Onion and The Wake, the Daily has to keep looking for new ways to stay competitive.

Constant Turnover in Readership – Every year, new potential readers enter the market and loyal readers leave.

Resaturating and educating the market area with marketing material from The Minnesota Daily every year is essential.

High Return Rates – The return rates of The Minnesota Daily have consistently remained high. This high return rate can be a result of a sharp decline in the popularity of print news or a change in the Daily’s target market.

The Minnesota Daily competes with several diverse newspapers within the Twin Cities Metro Area. Although the Daily competes with many well-known publications, it must be noted that the newspaper differs in the sense that it is published daily, it is a free source of news and entertainment, and it is a student-run organization. Listed below is a summary of the competing publications containing their daily/ weekly circulation, audience, distribution locations, and additional related facts.

The Wake The Wake is a relatively new publication to the University.

It was started by two journalism students in the spring of 2002 as a bi-weekly news, arts and entertainment magazine. Currently, issues are published on a bi-weekly basis during fall semester and are published weekly throughout spring semester. The paper can be located on and around campus at approximately 98 different drop sites with a circulation of 10,000 copies and a readership of about 13,000 students. The Wake is a student-operated magazine that directs its content toward University students rather than the entire campus community. It claims to be an alternative to the Daily by offering its readers “creativity, experimentation, controversy, and stimulation.”

The Onion The Onion is a satirical publication that is distributed every Thursday throughout the nation in Austin, New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Denver/Boulder, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and the Twin Cities. In the Twin Cities alone, they circulate 70,000 papers in nearly 1,000 different locations. The Onion is available online and on the radio as well.

City Pages City Pages started in 1979 as a periodical that focused on music, but now contains both news and the arts. This paper’s mission is to provide investigative reporting, political and institutional updates, clear graphics, a strong voice, and a sense of humor. City Pages is distributed every Wednesday throughout six different metro areas. Star Tribune The Star Tribune was established in 1867. Vita.mn Vita.mn is The Star Tribune Company’s newest free entertainment guide inside the Twin Cities. The service provides information regarding the arts, entertainment and music, fashion, and restaurants. Vita.mn targets a young crowd, ages 25-34. The information they choose to emphasize is selected by Vita.mn staff, Star Tribune personnel, along with voices from their audience. When it was first launched in November of 2006, it was expected that there would be 50,000 copies available at 800 different drop sites on a weekly basis.

SEPTEMBER 2007 Paint the Bridge – Over 200,000 people cross the Washington Avenue Bridge annually. Painting MOE and The Minnesota Daily logo on a panel inside the bridge will serve as a reminder to readers to pick up an issue of the Daily or check it out online.

Online T-Shirt Contest –The online t-shirt contest is an ongoing campaign where readers e-mail marketing@mndaily.com to enter to win a Daily t-shirt. Through the use of new approaches, such as advertisements containing trivia questions about The Minnesota Daily, this campaign should see a higher number of submissions than years previous. This campaign has been an important part of reader interaction with the Daily as the demand for t-shirts persists.

Get Spotted – The “Get Spotted” campaign takes place year round as it is an excellent way to interact with the Daily’s readers. This campaign encourages readers to grab the print version of the paper and be seen reading it to win prizes.

Get Spotted events are announced with an eye catching advertisement within The Minnesota Daily at least a day in advance. The event takes place in high traffic areas to increase awareness of the paper on campus.

OCTOBER 2007 Dine With the Daily – The Dine with the Daily campaign is a new edition this year. Through this campaign our objective is to increase awareness and use of the Drink and Dine service provided by The Minnesota Daily. Twice a month the Daily will partner with local restaurants during lunch hour to provide readers a discount on their purchase.

Advertisements with a coupon will run in the Daily the day before the event. In order for the readers to receive the discount on the coupon they will have to visit the Drink and Page and answer a quick trivia question. Daily staff will be present at the event to hand out promotional items.

Daily Doodle – The launch of the Daily Doodle campaign is intended to provide the University of Minnesota community an opportunity to interact with The Minnesota Daily by drawing, sketching, or doodling their own design based on a theme. Each week a new theme will be announced and readers will be encouraged to submit their artwork to one of

the four drop sites around campus. Eight finalist’s artworks will be displayed at the Weisman art Museum for voting and the grand prize winner will receive a prize package valued at $200+.

NOVEMBER 2007 Homecoming – The Minnesota Daily will help sponsor Homecoming 2007 by working with the Students Activities Office. Homecoming will expose The Minnesota Daily to potential new readers. MOE will make a presence at as many events as possible in addition to walking in the Homecoming parade. The special Homecoming issue of The Minnesota Daily will also be placed on all student section seats in the Metrodome prior to the Homecoming game.

Fall Freakout – Each year The Minnesota Daily organizes a goodwill event. The goal for 2007 is to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. With the help from Blarney Pub and Grill, The Minnesota Daily will host a night of local music in order to accomplish this goal. Attendance to this event will cost $5.00 and all proceeds from ticket sales will go to the MS Society.

Date Night – The Date Night promotion has been popular among Daily readers the past few years. Readers are asked to write-in to marketing on why they deserve a special date with their significant other. Three winners are chosen to go on one of the three dates sponsored by local restaurants and businesses. By working with the sales department and their clients, The Minnesota Daily has been able to partner with local restaurants and businesses to provide prize packages for winners varying between $150- $250.

DECEMBER 2007 Finals events – Finals are a stressful time of year and The Minnesota Daily will do what it can to get everyone ready.

Through MOE sightings and other promotional activities the Daily will distribute merchandise that coincides with this time of the year.

JANUARY 2008 Trivia Wednesday – The goal of launching Trivia Wednesday is to get readers to look through the entire paper. Many readers have their favorite section(s) and don’t always pay attention to all the news. Three to five trivia questions will be hidden throughout the Wednesday issue of The

Minnesota Daily and readers will be encouraged to find, answer, and submit their responses to the marketing department. Each week prizes will be given to the contestants with the most correct answers.

FEBRUARY 2008 Lovelines – Lovelines allows readers to write a classifiedstyle message to their loved ones. On Valentine’s Day, The Minnesota Daily will contain a special Valentine’s themed spread with all the messages. Readers will be able to purchase spots starting in January.

GrapeVine Awards – Grapevine Awards are a great way for readers to vote on their favorite local businesses. This campaign has been successful the past in driving readers to the mndaily website where they could vote on such categories as “Best Burrito” and “Best New Restaurant.”

MARCH 2008 Spring Break Kits – The Spring Break Kits have been a very popular promotion among The Minnesota Daily readers.

Spring Break Kits are put together with the help from local businesses and are then distributed to readers for a short time on a specific date. The kits include internal and external promotional items that all relate to spring break, such as sunscreen packets and Frisbees.

Housing Fair – The Housing Fair is an event put together by the University of Minnesota Housing Services. As many students searching for housing attend this fair, it is a great way for The Minnesota Daily to create further awareness.

APRIL 2008 Spring Jam – Much like Homecoming in the fall, Spring Jam 2008 is another opportunity for The Minnesota Daily to reach a large audience through sponsorship. In working with the Students Activities Office, MOE is able to make a presence at all campus events during this week.

MAY 2008 Finals events – As in the fall, The Minnesota Daily will help ease students’ stress by providing them fun promotional items. Through MOE sightings and other promotional activities the Daily will distribute merchandise that coincides with this time of the year.

SUMMER 2008 Orientation and Involvement Fairs – Orientation and Involvement fairs are The Minnesota Daily’s first chance to create a positive impression on new University of Minnesota students and recruit new readers and possible employees. These events put on by the Orientation and First Year Programs are a great way to create awareness.
