January 9, 2008 CNBAM Judges: It is my pleasure to nominate Katie Lash for CNBAM’s Designer of the Year Award. As the assistant production manager at The State News, I have had the privilege of watching her grow as a designer over the last year. In her position as graphic designer, she consistently displays many characteristics that make her a standout employee and a role model to her fellow coworkers. One example is Katie’s unique ability to generate multiple ideas for each project, under tight deadlines, while maintaining her cool. This was especially important in developing the look and feel of the “Now We’re Getting Personal” ad campaign. Katie takes great pride in her work at The State News. On many occasions, her willingness to work beyond her scheduled shift has made it possible to complete tedious ad changes and important projects on deadline. As a leader in her department, Katie possesses a strong work ethic and maintains positive relationships with her coworkers. Through her busy work schedule, Katie always finds the time to help her coworkers learn the design programs or help them out with their own projects. Katie’s dedication, positive attitude, versatility, creativity and personal strive for excellence makes her an obvious choice for designer of the year. I hope you find it appropriate to reward her work by naming her designer of the year. Sincerely,
Sabrina Egeler Assistant Production Manager
January 09, 2008 CNBAM Judges: It is a pleasure to recommend Katie Lash for CNBAM’s Designer of the Year award. As the creative director and fellow graphic artist for The State News, I have had the privilege to work with Katie for more than a year. Katie’s diligence and enthusiasm for design is evident in all the work that she produces. While designing Katie is always conscious of who the audience is and the goal of the piece that she is working on, therefore creating clear and effective advertising. On many occasions Katie has received praise from the client on an ad that she created and many thanks for her work. Her designs are always very clean and easy on the eye, making them appealing for clients and readers of The State News. Not only have I had the pleasure to work with Katie as her creative director, but also as a fellow graphic artist. Katie is always willing to lend design advice or just be there to help brainstorm an idea. She is always asking questions and actively trying to become a better designer. Her desire to learn more and become better is an inspiration to everyone in the office. Sincerely,
Michelle Cox Creative Director

January 9, 2008 CNBAM Judges: It is my pleasure to nominate Shannon McKeon for CNBAM’s Designer of the Year Award. As the assistant production manager at The State News, I have had the privilege of watching Shannon grow as a designer over the last year. Shannon exhibits a great passion for graphic design and approaches every assignment with an enthusiasm that is contagious. One project that illustrates this is her work on the Dining Guide. Shannon created a theme and characters that she was able to successfully carry from promo to ads to the finished product. These projects required a large amount of personal time on Shannon’s behalf to insure that they were completed to her high standards. Tight deadlines never stop Shannon from giving 100% to her design or her teammates. She will always put her work aside to help others often resulting in taking her work home. Shannon takes great pride in her work and as a representative of The State News production staff. She possesses a positive attitude and is always willing to go above and beyond her job duties. Nothing brings a smile to her face more than a happy client. Shannon’s drive, positive attitude, creativity and personal strive for excellence make her an obvious choice for designer of the year. I hope you find it appropriate to reward her work by naming her designer of the year. Sincerely, Sabrina Egeler Assistant Production Manager
January 09, 2008 CNBAM Judges: I am thrilled to recommend Shannon McKeon for CNBAM’s Designer of the Year award. I am proud to say that I have worked with Shannon for more than a year at The State News as the creative director as well as a fellow graphic artist. Shannon goes above and beyond with each project that she works on to create outstanding pieces of work. Over the last year, Shannon has developed a unique style and perspective on design. Her use of vector artwork and brush strokes have become staples throughout her portfolio. With each project that Shannon undertakes she pushes the boundaries to give the client a unique piece that will set them apart from the competition. Shannon’s original style is appreciated by staff and clients alike, as she has been requested for campaigns. Shannon always goes that extra mile to make sure that she is creating the best work that she can. Shannon has met with clients to discuss her ideas, does outside research on the client and has even gone to a location to photograph in order to get the perfect image. Her dedication and interactive approach to design is contagious and should be rewarded by naming her Designer of the Year. Sincerely,

Jan. 16, 2008 Dear CNBAM Judges: I am very happy to nominate Lainey Lee as CNBAM’s Designer of the Year. I have worked with Lainey for the past two years and thoroughly appreciate her work ethic and her talent. As the Creative Director for The Daily Collegian, Lainey is responsible for assigning a large workload to her 12-person staff. She must follow up on every project and make sure all ads and promotions are inserted correctly and on deadline. In addition, Lainey assigns some of the projects to herself, and she is versatile, creative and always surprising. This, combined with her ability and willingness to work within conventions, makes her a very valuable asset to Collegian. In addition, Lainey is very accepting of suggestions to “tweak” her ads; I really don’t see the ego problems that are often evident with artists. She is genuinely here to learn, and takes suggestions with a smile. She is really a pleasure to work with! Lainey does everything here: Web ads, process color ads, promotion pieces, huge ads, tiny ads. She is adept with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. She works with photography and is always advancing her knowledge. Besides her obvious talent, Lainey has worked very closely with our Production Supervisor and they try to nip any problems in the bud. Changes in technology can be a source of confusion and cause serious errors if we have communication problems with Production. Lainey has been proactive in addressing potential problems and it has made a huge difference in the mood and tone of the department. I believe CNBAM’s Designer of the Year award should go to Lainey Lee. She is very talented, works great with other people and is a wonderful role model for her staff. Sincerely, Candace Heckard Business Adviser The Daily Collegian Penn State University
2007 CNBAM Award Nomination Category 6d: Designer of the Year Nominee: Lainey Lee January 29, 2008 To Whom It May Concern: It is my pleasure to nominate Lainey Lee for the category of Designer of the Year. I have worked closely with Lainey at The Daily Collegian over the past two school years and I feel that Lainey is a strong candidate with great energy and complete dedication to her work. Among Lainey’s greatest assets are her positive attitude and humility—two rare and wonderful strengths for a designer to have. Rather than shrugging off criticism and plowing ahead simply with her own visions, she listens patiently and carefully to the needs and recommendations of both clients and advisors and always puts these to use in her ads. I have personally witnessed her skill at working harmoniously with even the most demanding clients. I contribute the excellent working relationship between our two departments to her attitude and the example she sets for others. Lainey has also demonstrated exceptional leadership in her role as manager of our creative department and has truly thrived under the responsibilities of the position. We have encountered a slew of productionrelated technical issues over the past several semesters as we and our clients continue to upgrade software. Lainey makes it a point to keep abreast of procedural changes and she flawlessly communicates these updates to her staff of 12, all working different hours. She has also mastered the art of maintaining her role as department leader while still allowing each staff member to contribute his or her particular expertise to projects. Finally, I have seen Lainey blossom as a designer over the past few semesters. Her work is playful, clean and concise. She works equally well in grayscale, spot color and process color design and has an in-depth understanding of registration and other variables related to newspaper printing. I greatly enjoy working with her and look forward to seeing how she will continue to utilize her talent in the future. I recommend Lainey Lee, without reservation, for the category of Designer of the Year, as merited by her outstanding attitude, thorough commitment, and design and managerial skills. Sincerely,
Rebecca P. Robison Day Supervisor, Systems Division The Daily Collegian Pennsylvania State University
CNBAM Designer of the Year Ronald Villegas TCU Daily Skiff Ronald Villegas has performed an outstanding job as an ad designer for the TCU Daily Skiff. Ronald has an excellent knowledge of the design programs, and freely shares tips and shortcuts with the rest of the design staff. Ronald spends his own time trying new methods and techniques for designs, and then willingly shares them with our other designers. He is always ready and willing to work extra hours when we need him. Ronald works extremely well with the ad representatives in trying to accomplish the goals of our clients, which is a real challenge sometimes. He can take a vague idea from the client and transform it into an innovative, informative ad that gets results. As with every paper, we have numerous clients that want a lot of information in a little space. Ronald is able to put the pertinent information in the ad and maintain its appeal. He is innovative in his approach, and creates ads that convey not only the advertiser’s message, but the advertiser’s “personality”. Ronald is an asset to the design staff at the Skiff, and is our choice for “Designer of the Year”.

December 5, 2007 To Whom It May Concern: My name is Natalie Haines and I was the student advertising manager from January 2007 until December 2007. In that time, I had the opportunity to manage advertising designer Ronald Villegas. Ronald is a talented artist and hard worker who is our choice for Designer of the Year. Ronald is definitely the designer I count on the most. He always come in for his scheduled hours and often works not until his hours are over, but until the ads are finished. My job doubles as a sales and a production manager, and he is always willing to help me with the production aspect of the paper; even though this is way beyond the scope of his job description. This can sometimes mean coming in as late as 7:30 p.m. to make sure everything is finished and formatted correctly. Our sales reps often request Ronald to design their ads, and it is not hard to see why. He can very quickly take a vague description and turn it into an effective ad that our clients love. He can also take tons of wording and put it into a small ad that is still eye-catching and conveys all the information. When given the ok by a client for full creative freedom, his talents shine through with fresh and innovative ads. Ronald has also worked hard to develop a consistent image and brand for the TCU Daily Skiff. I picked him to design our rate card and all of our sales promotion materials. I completely trust and stand behind his creative decisions and he has never disappointed. Thank you for your consideration of Ronald Villegas for Designer of the Year. His creative prowess is second to none and his work ethic is even better. He is a valuable asset to the TCU Daily Skiff and his designs speak volumes of him. Sincerely, Natalie Haines Advertising Manager 2007
