White has a full beard and long hair braided into a ponytail. His muscular forearms are covered with tattoos, some of which he said he did himself while in prison. He is 46 years old and said he has been in and out of correctional facilities, mostly for burglary and drug convictions, since he was 15 or 16. Every time he was released, he returned to the same lifestyle. He said he thinks getting a college degree could finally help him break that cycle.

Since 2000, IU has served almost 700 incarcerated students like White, said Lisa Denlinger, the executive director of marketing and communication for IU’s School of Continuing Studies. Daniel Callison, the dean of the school, said the School of

Continuing Studies began serving inmates in the 1970s, but record-keeping from that time makes it difficult to discern just how many inmates have taken courses through IU or exactly when the program began. IU’s program is different from those of other universities in the state, Callison said, because IU only offers inmates correspondence courses, which means inmates have no direct teacher-student interaction. Generally, Callison said the courses consist of about 12 lessons and at least two proctored exams. For inmates in Indiana, staff members at the various correctional facilities and the state prison in Michigan City, Ind., oversee the process of distributing textbooks and lessons, making sure mail arrives on time and proctoring students’ exams.

Like many students on the IU campus in Bloomington, White wants nothing more than to graduate. Unlike students in Bloomington, however, he has an added incentive: If he receives his bachelor’s degree while behind bars, he can receive a twoyear time cut off his sentence.

So on this day, like many

before it, White waits for the mail, hoping to receive lessons for one of his classes or grades from a class he has already completed so he can move on to his next one. The facility’s mail system is slow. Mail must be checked on the way into and out of the facility, to ensure it contains no illegal drugs or other banned materials. That, added on to IU’s sometimes lengthy processing of lessons and tests, means White spends many days frustrated.

For White, any day behind bars is one day too many. Set to be released in 2012, White has already received time cuts of one year for receiving his associate’s degree. During his trial, White said the judge ordered the last two years of his sentence be completed under house arrest – meaning he could go home in 2010. Add the potential twoyear time-cut from his nearlycompleted bachelor’s degree, and White could be out of the facility this year. White said he has only five classes remaining, and he’d like to finish them as quickly as possible. But he can only work as fast as the mail system will allow. So he waits.

Canine trick-or-treaters howl way into Old Town Classic horror flick still scary after 26 years, despite cheesy effects

Lansing — It was an event for pet lovers. It was an event that can put a smile on any face, even on the crummiest of days.

It was the fourth annual Howlo-ween, a dress-up Halloween event for dogs.

Despite a downpour at times on Friday, more than 60 costumed dogs made their way out to the streets of Old Town with their owners, said event coordinator Jana Nicol.

“It’s been great, other than it being 40 degrees and pouring down rain, it’s been outstanding,” said Molly Barth, who, along with her husband Sam, dressed up as Velma and Shaggy. They dressed their dog Barkley as Scooby-Doo. Dog trick-or-treating was the brainchild of Nicol, owner of Gone 2 the Dogs, 306 E. Grand River Ave., in Lansing.

“They’re here.”

The simple tagline of the 1982 horror movie “Poltergeist” sums up the film perfectly: pretty creepy, with a little cheesiness thrown into the mix.

Right from the start, the viewer doesn’t know whether to be scared or laugh at the 1982 Steven Spielberg flick, but the movie jumps right into the action.

A normal family, the Freelings, start to notice their daughter acting strangely as unexplainable things happening in the house.

Daughter Carol Anne’s infatuation with the “TV people” and chairs mysteriously moving about the kitchen keep the watcher interested.

The movie is well cast, with Heather O’Rourke as the cute, creepy daughter. The witty and realistic parents, played by Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams, who keep the acting from making the film seem overly dramatic.

Admittedly, the effects are pretty good for an ’80s movie.

For instance, it’s strange how they can actually make it look like the mother is floating up the ceiling with no strings attached.

But the effects go overboard toward the end of the movie, when the parents have to go through the portal — it’s unclear whether it leads to hell, or wherever — to save Carol Anne.

The same can be said when mother, Diane Freeling, falls into the unfinished pool and a bunch of skeletons start attacking her.

But the ridiculous effects add to the enjoyment of the movie more so than the dialogue-based scenes, which can drag on.

The grossest part just might be when one of the ghost hunters that come to the house starts pulling his face off in the kitch-

en because he becomes possessed. The scene was as grotesque and definitely not for the squeamish.

The parents smoking weed in bed right as their son comes in to complain about the storm outside is amusing and revealing of the movie’s generation.

Other unintentionally funny scenes are toward the end, when the whole house is about to implode from ghost attacks. The father, Steve Freeling, screams at the subdivision developer he works for. The whole “You only moved the headstones. Why? Why?” is just too corny to take seriously.

As far as classic horror movies go, this is one of the better ones.

It’s not as creepy as “The Exorcist” or as chilling as “The Shining,” but it remains a classic.
