Tech Traditions Texas Tech Seal The granite seal marks the main entrance to Texas Tech and was designed by campus master planner William Ward Watkin in 1924. It stands 12 feet tall and has been on campus since 1972. Its symbols are the lamp for “school,” the key for “home,” the book for “church” and the star for “state.” Cotton bolls represent the area’s strong cotton industry and the eagle represents country.

Victory Bells Carol of Lights The Carol of Lights ceremony marks the first night of the month-long lighting of thousands of red, white and yellow Christmas lights gracing the campus buildings on the Broadway entrance to Memorial Circle, on the Science Quadrangle and Engineering Key. The formal ceremony, conducted on the first Friday of every December since 1959, includes a torch-lighted parade, trumpets and seasonal music.

Double T Historical evidence suggest that Texas Tech’s first football coaches, E.Y. Freeland and Grady Higginbotham, originally used this symbol on letter sweaters. The symbol represents tradition and pride, as well as school identity.

Donated by the Class of 1936, the bells are located in the east tower of the Administration building. The bells rang for the first time at their graduation ceremony and now are used when Texas Tech wins athletic events, including when Tech joined the Southwest Conference and Big 12 Conference. The bells ring for 30 minutes just as they have since 1936 after they rang all night following a Tech win over TCU, keeping the citizens of Lubbock awake all night long.

Goin’ Band The Goin’ Band from Raiderland performs at home and away games, parades and other special events. Following home football games, fans join the band in its traditional march out of Jones AT&T Stadium.

Learn ‘em, Love ‘em, Live ‘em Saddle Tramps

Dairy Barn Built in 1925, the barn is one of Texas Tech’s first buildings. The barn originally housed the university’s livestock and was declared a landmark in 1992. Through the years, efforts to save the barn from destruction have been waged by many students and alumni.

Formed by Texas Tech student Arch Lamb in 1936, this all-male booster organization supports men’s athletics. These midnight raiders “paint the campus red” with crepe paper before every home football game, as well as wrap the statue of Will Rogers and his horse, Soapsuds. They also form the legendary “Bell Circle” just moments before kickoff at football games.

Masked Rider The mascot of Texas Tech, the Masked Rider is a student chosen every year to ride on a black horse while he or she is costumed in a black satin cape, black hat and mask. The Masked Rider made its first appearance on Jan. 1, 1954, when Tech played in the Gator Bowl. A student on a horse rode across the field prior to the football team’s appearance. The dramatic entry by the horse and rider electrified the crowd as well as the team, which beat Auburn 35-13.

Raider Red Prior to the 1971 season, the Southwest Conference adopted a rule preventing conference members from bringing live mascots to away games unless the host team had no objections. In response, Jim Gaspard, a Saddle Tramp, created Raider Red from a drawing by Lubbock cartoonist Dirk West. Raider Red was an alternative to the Masked Rider when the horse couldn’t travel with the football team. Raider Red’s identity is kept secret from the Texas Tech community.

Will Rogers & Soapsuds The statue “Riding into the Sunset,” which depicts humorist Will Rogers on his horse Soapsuds, is one of four such statues in the United States and was presented to Tech in 1948 by the Amon G. Carter Foundation. The statue is wrapped for home football games.

The Texas Tech yearbook is La Ventana. Established in 1925, La Ventana has never missed a year of publication. Its name is Spanish for “the window,” and it was named not only to continue the school’s Spanish-style theme, but because it is indeed the window into life at Tech.

14 Raider Life Living on campus, managing your residence hall life Most first-year students live in the residence halls. The opportunities for meeting new people and becoming involved are limited only by your willingness. Some opportunities include participating in residence hall councils, playing on hall intramural teams, student employment and community service. All residents of the halls are encouraged to be active community members. Each hall has designated visitation hours for members of the opposite gender. Each residence hall votes on the hours at the beginning of the fall semester. The results are effective until the end of the normal academic year. Texas Tech offers many different living options, including suite-style rooms, apartment living and the traditional residence hall space. With 11 different residence halls and 17 food locations, residence hall life offers a diverse selection to enhance the collegiate experience.

Campus living keeps classes closer, grades higher Studies have shown living on campus contributes to the academic success of students. Living on campus puts classes closer and the availability of special interest and study intensive floors encourage group learning among students. Besides being a convenient place to live, resi-

dence hall life makes it easier for students to get involved with various activities and student organizations. Residence hall life also helps students create life-long friendships with roommates and hallmates and helps students get acquainted with university life.

Decorating Tips Residence hall rooms usually are nothing like the room you left at home. Here are some helpful hints to aid you in your move-in and decorating process. • Bring reminders from home — Small mementos from home will make the stress of homesickness easier to bear. • It doesn’t all have to be new — Old bedding and familiar decorations are perfectly acceptable. • Make it personal — Don’t think you have to create a new persona to be able to “fit in” at college. Try to make your room your own, not someone else’s. • Keep it simple — Try to limit what you bring and keep in mind that extra furniture in your room, while enticing, may not be the best way to utilize your space. • Don’t forget to share — Call your roommate before you get to campus and decide who is going to bring what. There is no need (or space) for two TVs. • Remember to be patient — There are only so many carts and dollies that circulate in the residence halls, and it usually is difficult to get one. • Flair is fun — Unique items can help make your room one of a kind that other people feel comfortable in.

Parent Life

36 Raider Life Don’t be a helicopter parent Many of today’s parents might have partied like it was 1999 during the ‘90s but the party is over. These overprotective mommies and daddies have children now and they’re watching them like hawks. No matter where their children are, they’re never too far away. Most parents certainly mean well. They want the best for their children. Of course, parents should be a positive part of their children’s lives. We all want parents to care about their children’s success, emotional state and progress. But occasionally, some parents may just go overboard — which can be a detriment to their children’s ability to learn self reliance. A helicopter parent is one who hovers over their child and swoops in at any sign of discomfort or challenge. They are considered by most to be overprotective. Parents can be overprotective for different reasons. Here are a few:

Name

Victory Bells The Carol of Lights ceremony marks the first night of the month-long lighting of thousands of red, white and yellow Christmas lights gracing the campus buildings on the Broadway entrance to Memorial Circle, on the Science Quadrangle and Engineering Key.

The granite seal marks the main entrance to Texas Tech and was designed by campus master planner William Ward Watkin in 1924. It stands 12 feet tall and has been on campus since 1972. Its symbols are the lamp for “school,” the key for “home,” the book for “church” and the star for “state.” Cotton bolls represent the area’s strong cotton industry and the eagle represents country.

Don’t be a helicopter parent Many of today’s parents might have partied like it was 1999 during the ‘90s but the party is over.

The shuttles run until 3 a.m. from the library to the residence halls or anywhere else on campus. You also can call 742-NITE (6483) to be picked up at a specific location. Yellow Cab also helps students during the late night and early morning hours through the Safe Ride program. Nearly 70 blue light phones are available around campus for use in case of an emergency. Each blue light phone serves as a direct link to the Texas Tech Police Department. In the parking lots, phones easily can be identified by looking for the blue lights mounted on top of the metal phone boxes. Blue light phones also are located in many of the academic buildings. You should utilize the blue phone system for assistance if you ever find yourself in an uneasy or uncomfortable situation or in the event of an emergency.
