Aries March 21–April 20 Like famous mime and Aries, the late Marcel Marceau, (really, he was a superstar, check him out!), Aries find themselves just going through the motions during the holidays, with fake smiles on their faces, wearing black, silently irritating people around them. It’s tough for you, Aries! Your nature is to see the cloud instead of the silver lining. So, instead of shopping for the perfect gifts for those you love, you worry about running up credit card debt in a bad economy. A Christmas tree?—a fire hazard. Mariah Carey Christmas music?—makes the dog’s ears bleed. Crowds of shoppers?—someone will probably get trampled. Family gatherings?— well, okay, those can be challenging, I’ll give you that. My best advice for you, Aries, is stock up on your favorite relaxing beverage, cuddle up to something or someone, and watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” every night until Christmas Eve. If that doesn’t make you feel the holiday spirit, then, to heck with ya.

Cancer June 23–July 23 Let’s face it. You Cancer people are cheap. And, somehow, statistically, there is one Cancer per family in the United States and he or she is always the one who gets my name in the gift exchange. Recipients of your thoughtful gifts will open presents wrapped in used paper saved from last year, revealing items like a single pair of tube socks out of the Giant Bag O’Socks from Sam’s Club, or a slightly used ThighMaster found at a garage sale. You are the reason we all practice our fake smiles in the mirror this time of year. Hey, with the economy the way it is, maybe you Cancers have the last laugh. And, you help us remember, it really is the thought that counts. Sorry I said you are cheap (even if you are); I’ll cherish your gift if only because it’s from you (fake smile here).

Aries Gift Ideas: Boxes of wine; vibrantly colored bedding

Cancer Gift ideas: 2008–09 16 month calendar with 4 months already past; mini-shampoos of the U.S. collected from hotels you’ve visited.

Taurus April 21–May 22

Leo July 23–August 23

According to the U of I Extension Service website, December 12 is National Poinsettia Day. (Darn, just missed that opportunity for an off the chain debauch.) But since Taurus has the trait of being habitually late and unapologetic about it, we are going to mark this major celebration today. We’ll call it “Unofficial Poinsettia Day.” (All beer on campus will have red food coloring added.) Here are some poinsettia facts to help you celebrate. Again according the Extension’s web site, 80% of poinsettias are purchased by women, and 80% are purchased by people 40 or older. I can attest through my own research that 60% of these are given as gifts to people over 70, and 50% of those are in the basement at my elderly mother’s house. There they’ve accumulated over the years, gifts from relatives with no gift-giving imagination and, like late Taurus, bought in haste, and each one now in varying degrees of plant death. My advice, Taurus, avoid giving living things as holiday gifts.

Leo loves attention! During the holidays that can have some fun consequences. You’re the family member seen jumping into the foreground of virtually every photo taken. You’re the person whose holiday greeting cards have your photo on the front. And—this is a little known fact—Leos are statistically more likely to be Salvation Army volunteer bell ringers. Now, I am not a Leo, but I did a three hour stint once ringing a bell, standing next to a store entrance, in the rain, trying to make eye contact with impatient holiday shoppers to get them to drop change and pocket fuzz into a red kettle. Oy vey! It is really hard ringing a bell continually for three hours! The key is keeping some kind of rhythm—I recommend thinking of the festive song “Fergaliscious” to jingle to. Leo, though, loves the opportunity of ringing to say “Hey-hey-hey! Look at me! I’m ringing the bell for charity!” Well, it’s an admirable thing to do anyway. Good job Leo. You’re the best! But you already knew that.

Taurus Gift Ideas: Chia pet; something from Bath and Body Works.

Leo Gift Ideas: photo frames; personalized engraved yard boulders.

Gemini May 22–June 23

Virgo August 23–September 23

Geminites, whose zodiac symbol is a glaring paparazzi photo of the blasé, malnourished Olsen Twins, are known to have difficulty making decisions. It’s all about being of two minds. The bane of minimum wage holiday retail workers, Geminites stand for hours in front of the store displays weighing all the pros and cons of equally bad gift choices. Example: would Aunt Bev prefer the sweater with the appliquéd fake fur snowman that requires special handling by the dry cleaner, or the cordless titanium nose hair trimmer she really could use? (Seriously, she could.) With difficult decisions like that, who can blame you for being indecisive—(or blame Aunt Bev for not inviting you to holiday dinner again next year)? What the heck—give her both, and show her you really love her. Best Gemini Gift Picks: etiquette books; grooming kits.

Those under your sign are known as being, ummmm, hard to please. You are the typical Virgo ingrate who is noticeably disappointed at the poor, worn appearance of the $100 bill your grandmother gave you. Unquestionably, this condition is not a bad trait when choosing a gift for others. You are the one who unfolds ALL the size medium sweaters on a store’s table display to find the one whose seams pucker least. After all, unpuckered seams is the hallmark of a great sweater. You also look at the stripes on the gift wrap to see if they match where the ends meet. You apologize for the poor, grainy quality of the fudge someone else brought to your party. You are bound and determined to make the world a better place whether anyone else cares or not. When you say, “Enjoy the holidays!” to someone, it’s not a request. Virgo—just chill a bit, ‘kay?

Virgo Gift Ideas: The Original Flip Fold clothing folder; book “When Perfect Isn’t Good Enough: Strategies for Coping With Perfectionism” by Martin M. Antony and Richard P. Swinson.

Libra September 23–October 23 The Librarian at the holidays keeps things on an even keel, just like their scale-y zodiac symbol. The holidays bring out these evenhanded traits even more than usual. You’re the kind of gift shopper who, when you see something Uncle Irving would like, you get the same gift for Uncle Bill in a different color. If you spend $40 on a gift for the nephew, you shop til you find the perfect gift of equal value for the niece. When you Libras buy drinks at your favorite bar, you feel the need to buy them for everyone. Yeah, baby! That’s what I’m talking about! For this reason alone, you find you are very popular at office and New Year’s parties. What you should do, Libra, is use that same equitable thinking to benefit yourself. If the holidays are about giving, then make sure they are about giving to you, too. When you find something really awesome for a gift, don’t think twice about getting one for yourself. Now that is balance. Libra Gift Ideas: ShamWow; bling.

Scorpio October 24–November 22 Did you know that each astrological sign “rules” certain body parts? I recently learned the fine points of this at an astrological continuing education class I must take each year to maintain my certification. Check it out! Scorpio rules the nose and nasal bone, pubic area and genital organs. I can’t quite fathom the reason behind this odd combination, but the stars are wiser than I. This has absolutely nothing to do with holiday gift giving—or does it? The thoughtful Scorpio might consider sharing gifts relating to his or her special appreciation of these body regions. Something lovely and aromatic, like candles, flowers, incenses… A nice adult “toy” or DVD, of course, edible underwear, flavored condoms… Be creative! Think it through carefully, though, before you give your mom or grandfather a heart attack. That would put a damper on the holiday. Scorpio Gift Ideas: potpourri—who doesn’t like potpourri?; magazine subscription.

Sagittarius November 23–December 21 You know what puzzles me? No one seems to know when Santa’s birthday is. We all know that for Christmas, Jesus’ birthday is central to the concept (some might even point out he is a Capricorn). But when it comes to Santa, all we know he is a little out of shape, he has a supportive stay-at-home wife, he works with elves and he keeps reindeer. Like Sarah Palin, he can see Russia from his living room window. We can guess, living at the North Pole, his heating bills must be enormous and, with global warming, he may end up having to move soon. Yet, all we do for this awesome humanitarian is put out milk and cookies for him once a year. I have to think that

Furnished because Sagittarians are known for their great generosity, Santa is a Sagittarius. Conveniently, that means he either just has had or is about to celebrate his birthday. So, do something extra nice for Santa this year, since he’ll be dropping by. Leave a little somethin’somethin’ he can enjoy. If anyone deserves it, Santa does. Sagittarius Gift Ideas: laser electrolysis gift certificate for those with unruly facial hair; gym membership.

Capricorn December 22–January 20 As you know, my zodiacness is much more developed than yours. I just wanted to point that out so you won’t scoff at this next fact I uncovered about Capricorn’s holiday shopping habits. According to the U.S. Department of Spending, or something like that, Capricorns do most of their holiday shopping in the dark! Many astrologers overlook this fact, but it didn’t slip by me. It basically confirms my long-held theory that Capricorns are really vampires. Which is nicely congruous with all this “Twilight” movie crap circulating these days, just as the holiday season kicks in. You probably don’t know that back in the day, the Zodiac Council changed the official Capricorn sign from Vampire to Goat. It wasn’t the most popular move. Some astrologers felt the zodiac was getting too crowded with horned beasts, but the third party candidate of Mole Rat took votes away from the then traditional Vampire symbol, and the Goat won. C’est la guerre! So, next time you non-Caps are waiting in line to pay for your holiday gift, take special care to keep the neck scarf nice and tight. There may be a hungry Capricorn standing behind you.

Aquarius January 20–February 19

101 E. Green (1st & Green)

You Aquarians are always trying to add a special homemade touch to your gifts. But, tread carefully. Avoid “unique” food recipes for food gifts. Raise your hand if you know who Paula Deen is. You are correct if you think she is the hostess of a southern-style TV cooking show who, when she pronounces simple words like “nuts” and “ham,” adds syllables for southern-style emphasis. (It’s “nuh-utts” or “haaay-am” for Aquarian Paauuuuh-lah.) She has some yummy recipes to share, but please, I beg you, don’t fall for this one—the Velveeta Fuuh-udge recipe. I don’t believe PD originated it, because years ago in another century when Paula was still perfecting Coca-Cola ham glaze, my crazy co-worker Judy gave me fudge she proudly pointed out was made from Velveeta cheese. I’ve never had it again, and that is okay. But, maybe I am better for the experience. For those of you who have never had fudge made from a highly processed cheese product, imagine kind of salty chocolate fudge—plus the desire to melt it in a crock pot and try it on chips. Ha! You Aquarians make the holidays interesting!

Pisces February 19–March 21 This holiday, Pisces, remember the real reason one gives a gift. Focus not on the careful choosing, the amount of money you can afford or the effort placed in wrapping. Focus, instead, on your gift’s regifting value. Learn that regifting isn’t a slap in the face to you, Pisces. It’s a great help for your friend or loved one when another friend’s birthday sneaks up on him or her. In my experience as an ingrate, gift cards, especially to Starbucks, are great for this. In fact, I am convinced there are more Starbucks gift cards per household in the U.S. than there are children or televisions. Be careful to select the most generic looking, non-holiday decorated card to allow the regifter the most leeway. And rest easy that you have given your special some ones something they will treasure so much they’ll turn around and give it to the mail carrier. Pisces Gift Ideas: gift cards, of course; giant variety can of flavored popcorn.

May the stars light your way!

Madame Betty Soleil-Moonpie Reads the Stars

I have to think that

because Sagittarians are known for their great generosity, Santa is a Sagittarius.

Capricorn Gift Ideas: a vial of your blood; electric toothbrush.

Aquarius January 20–February 19 You Aquarians are always trying to add a special homemade touch to your gifts. Aquarius Gift Ideas: fruitcake made with Skittles; Cheez Whiz variety pack.

Gabe’s Place Apartments takes your budget into consideration when it sets its rates. Not every student can afford to pay $400 or more per person for an apartment.
