The Daily Wildcat Goes Broadsheet
New for 2008-2009, the Daily Wildcat is changing its format to a broadsheet. This format matches the size of most commercial and college newspapers. With 30 percent more display space, for Wildcat advertisers this will mean opportunities for larger space ads and dominant impact. Please note our new dimensions listed in this rate card, as well as our expanded bulk space and frequency contract opportunities.

About the Daily Wildcat With more than 150 students employed throughout the year, the Arizona Daily Wildcat is a student-run, independent newspaper. The Daily Wildcat does not receive any financial funding or support from the university. The Daily Wildcat is the University of Arizona’s number one source for campus and local news in print and online.
Affiliations Newspaper Association of America, Associated Collegiate Press (ACP), College Media Advisers (CMA), Arizona Newspapers Association (ANA), The Associated Press, College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers (CNBAM), Western Association of University Publications Managers (WAUPM), Tucson Advertising Club.
(reprinted from Brandweek.com, June 1, 2008)
Alloy Media+Marketing, a New York agency, found that 82% of students read their campus newspaper, a rate that more than doubles most major metro dailies. Of this group, most are also open to advertising. Only 13% said they avoid advertising in their campus newspaper. Close to 80% reported reacting to an ad or article. College papers are an arena that is ripe for wider use by marketers, said Samantha Skey, executive vp for strategic marketing at Alloy. “Those marketers who are not using college newspapers are missing out,” she said.

The Daily Wildcat is distributed at more than 100 locations through campus, in university buildings, and at selected local businesses. The Sausage Deli’s reputation was built by years of patronage by students at the University of Arizona. For more than 30 years the Deli has relied on the Arizona Daily Wildcat‘s connection with the U of A Community. Reading an Arizona Daily Wildcat while eating one of our sandwiches seems to go hand in hand. Thank you Wildcats!
The Arizona Daily Wildcat has been my primary advertising outlet. We have seen an increase of 35 percent over last year’s sales. We attribute this to the increased traffic of student sales. Discount Mattress Barn prides itself with offering quality bedding at barnyard prices, to all University of Arizona students with a 10 percent discount.
I grab one every morning on my way to class. I find it to be a great escape during long lectures. Anything that’s going on around campus I can find in the Daily Wildcat. I truly don’t even bother with other newspapers.

Student Media History The university’s first student newspaper, The Normal Echo, debuted on Oct. 18, 1890, as a one-page supplement to what is now the Tempe Daily News Tribune. Resembling a literary magazine more than a newspaper of today, it hoped to “unite more closely the student body and alumni,” and featured short stories, human interest articles and short editorials to the students at Tempe Normal School. In 1906 the Echo became the Tempe Normal Student, a four-page tabloid distributed on campus each Friday for five cents per copy. The school became Tempe College in 1925, prompting the newspaper to change its name to the Tempe Collegian. The name was shortened to the Collegian in 1930. Two years later, the college began teaching its first journalism courses and the paper fell under the umbrella of the new department. By 1925 the name of the normal school had been changed to Tempe State Teachers College. In 1936, when the newspaper became the Arizona State Press, the school was known as Arizona State Teachers College at Tempe. It became Arizona State College at Tempe in 1945 and Arizona State University in 1958. The newspaper’s name was shortened to The State Press in the 1960s. In the mid-1970s, amidst a nationwide movement to make campus dailies independent of academic departments and direct faculty supervision, The State Press gained a hotly contested divorce from the mass communications department. John Schwada, thenpresident of ASU, placed the paper under the authority of a Board of Student Media. The first board resigned within a month because of a disagreement with the Arizona Board of Regents regarding its role in the newspaper’s affairs. The department is now under the Office of Vice President for Student Affairs. In the 1980s, the paper added a Monday edition and became a five-day-a-week daily. Student Media developed into a program that included various selfsupporting publications giving students experience in all phases of publishing. Student Media Today
The State Press - ASU’s independent daily newspaper. The official campus newspaper is published Monday through Friday during the fall and spring sessions and every Monday during the summer sessions. State Press Magazine - a weekly entertainment and arts magazine published and distributed every Wednesday during the fall and spring semesters. Web Devil - the on-line arm of The State Press and Student Media, featuring electronic versions of Student Media publications (most notably The State Press), and independent news/editorial content. SDTV Channel 2 - ASU’s Cable Channel 2 television station broadcasting to residence halls and other campus buildings. Devil Deals - ASU’s only officially recognized coupon book, published four times a year. Whats Your Story? Now you know what we’re all about, but as an advertiser and business person you want others to know what your story is.. who you are... and what you’re all about. We recognize the importance of promotion and visibility and are excited about the coming year as we introduce our cross-platform marketing plan, “What’s Your Story” (see back page).

Digital and Mechanical Specifications
Color There are 15 spot colors to choose from. Any ad being submitted with a spot color needs to have that spot color represented in a corresponding gradient of Process Magenta. Acrobat PDF Portable document format (Acrobat PDF) is the preferred file format for electronically transmitted ads. Acrobat PDF files should be submitted as press-ready composite PDFs (separations are not accepted). Remember to embed all fonts. The minimum and preferred version of your PDF document should be Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Universal EPS Universal EPS files are created through the Print Window of the program you use to build the ad when the command “Print to File” is selected. When sending a Universal EPS, send all font files used in the ad or create font outlines. When sending Type1 fonts, please remember to include both the screen and printer font of each font required. Web Banners and Buttons All files for web posting need to be formatted for web: Animated gif files or jpg, RGB at 72dpi. The maximum size allowed is 24k. General Information • Make sure you embed all fonts and all images that you placed in the document to be printed. • Use CMYK color values. Do not use RGB color values. • Keep your design simple. Newsweb presses do not hold registration or ink density with as much precision as sheetfed presses. Avoid fine lines, fine reverses, large solids, graduated screen tints, and tight trapping and registration whenever possible. Avoid PMS builds on type smaller than 24 pt. Avoid using type smaller than 7 points. • Dot gain on a newsweb press is more dramatic than on a sheetfed press. To avoid your halftones and color separations from reproducing too dark, use a highlight dot of about 10% (10% dot gain) and a shadow dot of about 75%. Mid tones should be set at approximately 35%. • Do not knock black type or graphics out of a light colored background. You will get better results if the black overprints the color. • When scanning photographs, use a resolution of at least 300 dpi or your photos will look grainy. • Do not use photographs that were downloaded off of the internet. These are not high-resolution images (usually about 72 dpi) and will definitely pixilate on your final product. • If you are providing a PDF file for spot colors, then you must separate the colors in the file. Acrobat does not recognize spot colors, therefore we can only print it in grayscale or CMYK. Therefore, the spot color should be represented as a gradient of Magenta. When 2 spot colors are chosen represent the second spot color as a gradient of Yellow.

DN Excellence Your message is in the hands of the top student newspaper in the country. In the 2007-08 school year, the Daily News was the only college paper in the country to receive two Gold Crown awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In addition, the Daily News took home 64 CSPA individual awards, the most of any college paper that year. The Indiana Collegiate Press Association named the Daily News the best daily newspaper in the state three times in the past five years, beating Indiana, Notre Dame, Purdue and Indiana State. The Daily News has been named paper of the year more than a dozen times in the past two decades and has been named advertising paper of the year three times in the past 12 years. In 2007-08, the advertising design department was recognized on a national level by the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers organization (CNBAM) for its creative efforts. The Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) also recognized the Daily News as second best in advertising in the state. The Daily News was one of the 14 best-designed newspapers in the world in 1997 and 1999. The Daily News is the only collegiate paper to ever win this prestigious Society of Newspaper Design award. It was also the focal point of Ball State’s most recent advertising campaign, with the university touting the DN as “the most award-winning student newspaper in the country.” High quality journalism and high readership among the members of the Ball State community make the Daily News the best way to reach the multi-million dollar market that is Ball State.

The advertiser and/or advertising agency is responsible for obtaining photo releases from anyone whose picture or likeness appears in an advertisement. The ad cannot be pulled the day before the ad runs.
Obligations Contracts All contracts are subject to approval by the Daily News advertising director. Contracts signed after September 30, 2008, will not be retroactive. An advertising contract is a guarantee on the rate, but does not imply credit has been granted. Contract rates apply only to advertisements inserted during the time specified in the contract (August 21, 2008 - May 1, 2009). Contract Adjustments Advertisers who fail to fulfill their contract will be charged for actual inches used at the applicable rate. For example: (contracted rate-actual inches used) x actual number of inches used=adjusted total. Advertisers who fail to fulfill contract obligations due to delinquent charges will forfeit all discounts previously earned under the contract.
Corrections Make-Good Ads The Daily News assumes no financial responsibility for errors in advertisements beyond the cost of space occupied by the advertisement in the first issue in which the error is made. “Makegood ads” will run, when appropriate, before billing adjustments are made. Such adjustments will not be considered if a proof of the ad was delivered and advertiser failed to call in corrections by the stated deadline. Errors in an ad do not automatically qualify for a make-good ad. Credit Adjustments Credit will not be considered if the Daily News advertising director is not notified within 15 days of the invoice date. Billing adjustments will be based on what percentage the error detracts from the effectiveness of the total advertising message, as determined by the Daily News advertising director. Adjustments will be noted on the next statement. Any/all “make-good ads” and credit adjustments will be determined by the advertising director. The Daily News is not responsible for errors in ad if copy is turned in after deadline. Proofs Ads will not receive a proof unless requested by the client. Proofs go out daily as soon as the ad is designed but no later than 10 a.m. the day before publication. It is the responsibility of the advertiser to provide correct information for where and to whom the proof needs to be sent. Proof Corrections Proofs are not to be used to change design and arrangement, but rather to check accuracy of the ad. The Daily News is not liable for errors in original copy received from advertiser or corrections or copy substitutions submitted after deadline. Deadline for corrections is 2 p.m. one day prior to publication or Friday by 2 p.m. for Monday publication. Special Section proof deadlines will vary. A corrected proof will be sent only at the client’s

Ad Submission Guidelines The Creative Services department of the Rocky Mountain Collegian can create an ad for you at no extra cost. If you are creating the ad yourself, electronic submission is preferred. Ads may be submitted electronically on CD-ROM or e-mailed. Ads should be built to the correct ad size. The Collegian reserves the right to reset or resize ads submitted with incorrect dimensions. Adobe Acrobat PDF is the preferred format for receiving files. When creating a PDF file, all fonts must be embedded. TIFF and JPEG files are also acceptable. Minimum resolution should be 300 dpi. GIF, BMP, PICT and images picked from websites do not reproduce well and should not be submitted. Color ads running in black and white should be converted to grayscale. Color ads running in color should be converted to CMYK. Photos, logos and graphics submitted for ads should be scanned at 300 dpi or larger. E-mail ads to: retailad@lamar.colostate.edu or retail2@lamar.colostate.edu
6 Steps to Placing an Ad 1. Select a Size
Determine if you want a smaller ad for minimal cost, a full page for maximum exposure or something inbetween. See page 5 for common sizes and measurements. You can run an ad as small as 1 column by 1 inch, or as big as 6 column by 21.5 inches.
2. Determine your Rate
Policies & Payments Advertising Acceptance
Position Requests
All advertising is subject to the approval of the Collegian acceptance committee. The committee reserves the right to refuse any advertising that does not conform to the published advertising policy, which is available from the Collegian Advertising Department. The Collegian reserves the right to print “Paid Advertisement” on any ad which closely resembles editorial material. The Collegian also reserves the right to edit copy that promotes irresponsible use of alcohol, as outlined in the published advertising policy. The Collegian reserves the right to refuse or edit advertising that is felt to be in poor taste or judgment or discriminates on the basis of race, creed, color, handicap, age or sex. The advertiser and/or advertising agency, assume liability for all content (including text and illustrations). Annual contracts are available for display advertising. Under the terms of the contract, a reduced column inch rate will be guaranteed for a specified volume of advertising placed in the Collegian. If the contract level is not met, additional charges will be assessed on advertising placed under this agreement for the difference between the contract rate and the contract level fulfilled.
The Collegian will honor all advertising requests when possible, however, position will not be sold or guaranteed.
Errors in Ads We regret that mistakes may happen. Adjustments will be made for ads with errors made by the Collegian. The Collegian is not responsible for errors in advertising copy accepted after the deadline or for advertisements proofed and approved by the advertiser. Compensation for errors will not exceed the cost of the ad.
Terms of Payment All ads must be paid at the time of placement unless a credit account has been established and is in good standing. To apply for credit, submit a completed credit application to the Collegian business manager. The Collegian reserves the right at any time to request payment in advance or to cancel credit privileges. Invoices are issued monthly. Terms are net 30 days. All advertising rates are net to the Collegian.
The Collegian Accepts Cash • University A Card • Checks • Money Orders • Visa • MasterCard • Discover • American Express
Are you a business at our open rate? A non-profit group? Are you eligible for any discounts? Do you want to run in color, which is charged in addition to space? Determine your rate from the options listed on pages 4&5.
3. Choose a Schedule
In which publication(s) will the ad run? Will the ad run multiple times or once? See the publishing schedule on the back cover to select your ad schedule, See page 4 to note the ad deadline.
4. Determine total Cost
Multiply the number of total columns wide the ad is by the number of inches tall the ad is. This equals the total column inches. Multiply the total column inches by your rate. This is the cost of the ad. Multiply cost by number of days you want to run to determine total cost of advertising. If it does not match your budget, adjust the ad size or change the frequency of the ad. Work with your advertising representative to determine discounts available to you.
5. Create the Ad
Will you create the ad yourself and email it to us, or will you send us the content so that our staff can create the ad for you? Check the ad submission guidelines for submitting your ad. Our Creative Services department can create the ad for you, free of charge.
6. Arrange Payment
Do you have an established billing account with the Collegian? If not, we gladly accept cash, check and credit cards. Call and set up payment before the ad runs.

The Daily Kent Stater offers net 30-day payment terms, billed monthly to clients with established payment records with the newspaper. New clients are required to prepay the first five ads. Invoices must be paid in the 30-day payment period, or a 10% finance charge will be added each month the bill goes unpaid. The Daily Kent Stater reserves the right to revoke the advertiser’s credit status if payment is overdue or incorrect. Advertising will not be accepted from the advertiser if there is an unpaid balance more than 60 days past the invoice date. The Daily Kent Stater reserves the right to request prepayment from an advertiser when it is deemed the advertiser cannot be extended credit. All classified advertising must be prepaid.
Ge n e r al Policies The Stater reserves the right to reject at any time any advertisement, copy or imagery that it deems unsuitable. The Stater will make the final determination regarding any advertisement’s suitability for publication. Advertising may be rejected that is potentially libelous; violates any federal, state or local laws; or encourages discrimination against any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, age, color, creed, religion, national origin or disability. All ads having the appearance of news must have the word “advertisement” printed prominently above the ad. Political ads must conform to Ohio campaign disclosure laws, and clearly show endorsement. The Stater will not accept alcohol advertising that violates state laws or policies of the Ohio Liquor Control Commission; that encourages alcohol abuse or emphasizes quantity or frequency of use; that portrays alcohol as a solution to problems or necessary to social, sexual or academic success or that associates alcohol consumption with tasks that require skill, including operation of motor vehicles or machinery. The Stater is not responsible for any errors in camera-ready ads, or in type set by the Stater if the ad proof has been approved by the advertiser. If the Stater is otherwise responsible for an error in an ad, the Stater will provide a correction in the next available issue, and/or allowance to the advertiser will be limited to only that portion of the ad in error, not to exceed the net price of the ad.
