Arts & Entertainment ‘Blind Side’ breaks beyond genre PRESTON CARTER MELBOURNE-WEAVER | T HE S TATE P RESS |

If you attempted to count on your fingers the number of movies where a hapless person uses sports to turn his or her life around, you’d have to grow a couple extra hands. The genre of inspiring sports films based on true stories has a number of repeats and familiar stories in its narrow range of work, and about every six months, a new one seems to find itself green-lit, on its way to the silver screen. This time it’s “The Blind Side,” based on the novel, “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,” by Michael Lewis, directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Alamo,” “The Rookie”). At first glance, it may seem like just another uplifting, forgettable sports movie. Instead, we are given a legitimately cute, heartwarming and amusing film, that despite it’s formulaic plot, stylized characters and 126-minute runtime, leaves the viewer laughing and refreshed, instead of bored. Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is a homeless, 17-yearold who can barely read, rarely talks, doesn’t know who his father is and was taken away from his crack-addicted mother at a very young age. He has little going for him besides his immense 6-foot-4, 304-pound body. With this one advantage, he is able to get accepted into a private Christian school to play football, a game he knows next to nothing about. Michael has nowhere to go when he leaves the gate of his prestigious school and

wanders the streets, looking for somewhere to sleep. It is in one of these instances when the wealthy Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock), her husband Sean Tuohy (Tim McGraw) and their family pass him by on the street and offer him a place to sleep in their home. From here their relationship evolves, and the Tuohys become Oher’s new family, something Oher has never had before. Sound familiar? It should. The story, though inspiring and heartwarming, is not what makes this movie

‘The Blind Side’ Director: John Lee Hancock Starring: Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron stand out. It does all the right things, and is touching, but nothing that hasn’t been done before. Despite her terrible hair and unnatural Southern accent (luckily, it eventually grows on you), Sandra Bullock does a wonderful job as Leigh Anne Touhy, guiding this film away from the unimaginative and conventional path that it could have so easily followed. Bullock gives a refreshing performance as a stubborn, strong Southern woman who won’t take crap from anyone. She shows off her comedic side while also displaying that she can get serious when the time calls for it. She feels natural in the role, distracting us from the standard-issue story being portrayed. Tim McGraw, as Leigh

Anne’s husband, balances out the relationship well. He’s calm and collected, while his intense wife gets things done. The couple is a joy to watch, not bickering at each other over where Oher should stay but working together in harmony. It’s refreshing, for once in a movie, to see a couple that is truly in love. The most endearing part of the film has to be Jae Head as S.J. Tuohy, the youngest member of the Tuohy family, and the first to accept Oher into his heart. The spunky kid is much too smart for anyone his age and twice as witty. When he’s on-screen, you can’t help but smirk, especially when he’s dwarfed by Oher. The two make an odd couple, whose relationship is a joy to watch develop. Quinton Aaron’s portrayal of Oher is done with a mix of gloomy facial expressions and the spoken equivalent of one, short sentence. He does a good job of not being forgotten while letting everyone else take the spotlight. When Oher does make some sort of expressive statement, Aaron makes it count, showing what a softy he is and reminding us that he’s no dummy. “The Blind Side” should have been a nondescript sports film, but, thanks to a cast of memorable characters and some comical performances, it makes its mark on the genre. It succeeds at accomplishing what its going for without coming off corny or melodramatic, and with a movie of this nature, you can’t realistically hope for anything more.

Currently, the trend with animated films goes something like this: Make a movie that has a healthy helping of fart jokes and physical gags to keep the little ones entertained, while mixing in some highbrow, ironic or sarcastic humor with references to entertain the adults, making a final product that entertains every member of the family. Often, with movies like the “Shrek” or “Toy Story” series, the formula results in a successful film that gets great reviews and makes millions of dollars at the box office. But for new release “Planet 51,” the filmmakers need to go back to chemistry class. The formula is attempted, but the results are not desirable. Instead of the precise, tight jokes that we get from films whose creators know what they’re doing, “Planet 51” is a mess of fanboy allusions that ends up forgetting about half its audience, eliciting more snickers from adults than laughs from children. The overall unbalanced nature of this film, along with a formulaic, predictable plot, make it a forgettable, monotonous picture that tries to fit in with the cool kids of the genre, but ultimately, is alien. “Planet 51,” directed by Jorge Blanco and written

by Joe Stillman (“Shrek,” “Shrek 2”), tells the story of charismatic NASA astronaut Capt. Charles T. Baker (Dwayne Johnson), who is sent on a mission to a foreign planet, which he, along with the rest of NASA, assumes to be uninhabited. Turns out it isn’t, and when the captain arrives, in a wacky twist of fates, he ends up being the alien. He befriends one of the alien children, Lem (Justin Long), who, unlike everyone around him, does not live in eternal fear of alien invaders. The aliens’ lifestyles are similar to humans, but the men do not wear pants, and the planet is in an era that emulates the 1950s. The basic ideas behind this movie seem somewhat creative, and the little details like the aliens being in the Nifty Fifties are engaging, but the execution is where it falls off the extraterrestrial cliff. As aforementioned, there is an overabundance of cultural references, which can often make for a good laugh here and there. In “Planet 51,” though, it’s overdone and recycled. Earlier this year, Pixar’s “Up” had a cute little allusion to “Star Wars,” but it was just once, and it was something that had not been done before. In “Planet 51”, there are what seems like dozens of references to “Star Wars” alone, along with almost recreating scenes from “The Terminator” and “E.T.” and

The reference to “Star Wars” in “Up” was great, because it was a subtle thing for adults, and if the kids didn’t get it, it didn’t change their view of the movie. With “Planet 51,” the film is so full of such allusions it interferes with the plot, causing the whole thing to lose direction. The plot is completely uninspired and unsurprising. How many times must we see the story of an outsider, who at first seems frightening because it looks different, only to find out that it’s really just like us? It’s great to inspire our youth to promote diversity, but let the dead horse lie. The voice talents, though almost all A-list actors, are colorless and dull. Dwayne Johnson was an odd casting choice for Capt. Baker, and you’d have to read the credits to know John Cleese, Seann William Scott and Jessica Biel also provided their voices.

Rams take second in Utah Collegian Staff Report

The CSU men’s golf team bounced back from back-to-back seventh place finishes to come to within nine strokes of winning a school-record sixth tournament of the year this weekend. The Rams shot 13 under as a team to take second on the par-72, 6,902-yard Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. BYU’s 22-under-par performance gave them the win on their home course. Idaho finished the tournament behind CSU in third shooting 10 under, while Boise State and New Mexico State tied for fourth shooting 8 under.

CSU ended the first two rounds Friday afternoon in fifth place, shooting 2 under as a team, but with an 11 under in Saturday afternoon’s final round, the Rams jumped three spots in the rankings. The biggest factor for the Rams Saturday afternoon was junior Riley Arp. Arp shot a season-low of 7 under to lead the Rams in the individual rankings in fourth place. Taking home the individual title was Matt McArthur of Southern Utah, shooting 11 under par. Three Ram golfers, including Arp, finished in the top 10. Junior Dustin Morris shot 5 under for the tournament to finish tied for

the eighth spot. Freshman Zahkai Brown, competing as an individual, placed in a three-way tie for 10th, shooting 4 under. Brown’s older brother, senior Zen Brown, was the final Ram golfer to shoot under par, with a 2-underpar performance. Junior Bryce Hanstad and sophomore Ryan Peterson both shot an even par in the final round to finish the Cougar Classic tied for 34th place at 5 over par. The second place finish for the Rams was their seventh top-five finish of the season. Up next for CSU will be the MWC Championship beginning Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.

Track picks up win at home

Despite the cold chill of the day, the Colorado State track and field teams were victorious in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the annual Jack Christiansen Invite this weekend. “The weather was not great, but our athletes stuck with it, and it turned out to be a good meet,” said head coach Brian Bedard. “We set a couple of personal bests today and had even walked away with some new [regional] qualifiers, so I was proud of the team.”

At home on Jack Christiansen Track, the Rams’ men scored a total of 121 points, while the women earned 132.5 points for the victory. The teams had 11 first-place finishes in 19 events scored, and both teams finished the meet in first-place overall. Doug Dieker tied the third-highest pole vault mark in CSU history at 16 feet, 6.75 inches, a personal best for him. In the shot put, Tyson Williams made a regional qualifying throw of 57 feet and 3 inches. Meagan Berg (183 feet, 4 inches) and Leah Elms-

hauser (180 feet, 10 inches) finished in first and second in the hammer throw, with both making regional qualifying marks. Four-year football starter Jeff Horinek, competing in track and field for his last semester of eligibility, took third-place in the shot put (53 feet, 9 inches) and finished as the top collegiate finisher in the discus with a throw of 162 feet.
