Pitt Students Spend

The Pitt News is proud to be the University of Pittsburgh’s studentproduced newspaper. Our offices and our campus are located in Oakland, which we like to think of as the heart of the city. Pitt’s neighborhood is adjacent to Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, South Side and Bloomfield. Downtown Pittsburgh, the Strip District, Station Square and Lawrenceville are all a short bus, car or bike ride from campus.

Two hundred undergraduate students work year round to bring The Pitt News to its student, faculty and alumni read ers. The Pitt News is a self-supporting, nonprofit organization, which takes no funding from the University. Our student business staff, in combination with advertisers like you, makes The Pitt News possible. Thank you for your investment in The Pitt News, and hail to Pitt!

Five Steps to Placing an Ad 1 Choose a Schedule

How frequently will your ad run? Remember the “rule of three”: It takes three impressions for a reader to remember and act on your advertisement. Consider a regular daily or weekly campaign for optimal impact.

2 Select a Size

Which ad size is right to attract attention, convey your message and work in the schedule to fit your advertising budget? Remember to consider full-process or one spot color at this step.

3 Determine Your Rate

Finding a contract size that fits with your advertising plans at The Pitt News offers you an immediate discount. Special promotions and incentives will be available throughout the year.

4 Create the Ad

Design services are free of charge. We’ll create an ad for you to your specifications, or you can send us your own artwork via e-mail at advertising@pittnews.com.

5 Arrange Payment

Pre-payment is required for new customers, but ask your advertising representative about setting up a billing account. Cash, check, VISA and MasterCard are accepted.

Color

There are 15 spot colors to choose from. Any ad being submitted with a spot color needs to have that spot color represented in a corresponding gradient of Process Magenta.

Phone......................... 602-496-2166 Fax............................. 602-496-2170 Email......display.advertising@asu.edu

Acrobat PDF

Portable document format (Acrobat PDF) is the preferred file format for electronically transmitted ads. Acrobat PDF files should be submitted as press-ready composite PDFs (separations are not accepted). Remember to embed all fonts. The minimum and preferred version of your PDF document should be Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3).

Universal EPS

Universal EPS files are created through the Print Window of the program you use to build the ad when the command “Print to File” is selected. When sending a Universal EPS, send all font files used in the ad or create font outlines. When sending Type1 fonts, please remember to include both the screen and printer font of each font required.

Web Banners and Buttons

All files for web posting need to be formatted for web: Animated gif files or jpg, RGB at 72dpi. The maximum size allowed is 24k.

General Information

• Make sure you embed all fonts and all images that you placed in the document to be printed. • Use CMYK color values. Do not use RGB color values. • Keep your design simple. Newsweb presses do not hold registration or ink density with as much precision as sheetfed presses. Avoid fine lines, fine reverses, large solids, graduated screen tints, and tight trapping and registration whenever possible. Avoid PMS builds on type smaller than 24 pt. Avoid using type smaller than 7 points. • Dot gain on a newsweb press is more dramatic than on a sheetfed press. To avoid your halftones and color separations from reproducing too dark, use a highlight dot of about 10% (10% dot gain) and a shadow dot of about 75%. Mid tones should be set at approximately 35%. • Do not knock black type or graphics out of a light colored background. You will get better results if the black overprints the color. • When scanning photographs, use a resolution of at least 300 dpi or your photos will look grainy. • Do not use photographs that were downloaded off of the internet. These are not high-resolution images (usually about 72 dpi) and will definitely pixilate on your final product. • If you are providing a PDF file for spot colors, then you must separate the colors in the file. Acrobat does not recognize spot colors, therefore we can only print it in grayscale or CMYK. Therefore, the spot color should be represented as a gradient of Magenta. When 2 spot colors are chosen represent the second spot color as a gradient of Yellow.

Non-computer formats: Ads may be submitted in any hard copy format for scanning. The Kansas State Collegian is printed using an 85-line screen and in CMYK format. If color is used, color separations must be included along with a proof copy. Negatives are also acceptable and must include all color separations if used.

Website Photos/Graphics: Photographs or graphics downloaded from a website are not recommended due to the small size, low resolution of the file and copyright violations.

Client Photos/Graphics: Clients may take their own digital photographs and provide these files to the Collegian by e-mail, or in the media listed above. They should be no less than 300dpi and in jpg format.

Do it yourself: camera-ready ads. Make sure you send us the right files.

Here’s what we’ll need to make an attractive ad. Copy: Specify the information you want in the ad. Remember, less is more! Logos: If you’re a new client, we’ll need a copy of your logo. A high-resolution JPEG, TIFF or PDF file is preferred, but we can also scan your logo from print materials, such as a brochure or business card. Artwork/photography: Let us know if you prefer photography, illustration or other visual style. If you can provide us photography, send us the original files in high resolution. We also offer on-site photographic services.

InDesign files must be CS3 compatible and be packaged with all linked art and font files in a ZIP archive.

Files must be composed at 300 dpi at actual size. Text should be converted to outlines or rasterized.

Other acceptable formats: TIFF — Finished resolution of 300 dpi at actual size. EPS — Finished resolution of 300 dpi at actual size. ADVERTISING POLICIES

2009–2010

THE DAILY COUGAR

®

Standards of acceptability

Camera-ready terms

All advertising is subject to approval by the Student Publications acceptance committee. The committee reserves the right to refuse advertising content that does not meet The Daily Cougar’s standards of acceptance. Ads for homework, term papers, adult striptease clubs, personals, psychic readers and adoptions will not be accepted and published by The Daily Cougar. A sample of all advertised mail-order items must be submitted to the advertising manager for approval prior to scheduling or publication of an advertisement.

The Daily Cougar accepts camera-ready submissions with the understanding that the ad has been approved by the advertiser or a representative thereof for publication without additional changes or corrections. The advertiser is entirely responsible for insuring that camera-ready ads are delivered to the paper in publishable form. Please contact your advertising representative at (714) 743-5340 before sending an advertisement in electronic format. Information on electronic submissions can also be downloaded from thedailycougar.com/advertising.

The Daily Cougar will not knowingly accept any advertisement that is defamatory, promotes academic dishonesty, violates any city, county, state or federal laws, or that is potentially libelous against a person based on race, sex, age, color, creed, religion, nationality or disability. The Daily Cougar will make all reasonable efforts to see that advertising is published as accepted and that pre-printed inserts are distributed as ordered. However, The Daily Cougar will not be responsible for any consequential damages resulting from failure to do so. The advertiser and/or agency agrees to assume full and complete responsibility and liability for the content (including text representations, illustrations, photographs, and copyrights) for any advertisements placed in The Daily Cougar. Advertising having the appearance of news must be labeled “Paid Advertising” at the top center of the ad within its border. As required by Texas state law, all political and cause advertisements must display the phrase “Paid Political Advertisement” at the top center of the ad within its border. All contract advertising is subject to the terms set forth in this rate card.

Payment terms All rates are net (non-commissionable and billed accordingly) and payable by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or P-card and SC Vouchers. Please make all checks payable to The University of Houston. Prepayment is required for all new advertisers, political, out-of-state and transient advertisers. By placing an advertising order, the advertiser agrees to and certifies conformity with The Daily Cougar’s policies and terms. All advertising must be paid for in advance until the advertiser has established credit with The Daily Cougar. Allow two weeks for processing of credit applications. For those advertisers with approved credit, payment is due upon the receipt of invoice. All terms and conditions on the credit application apply.

To submit ads via e-mail, send files, including all placed art and fonts, to production@ thedailycougar.com Include the advertiser’s and sales rep’s names in the e-mail message that accompanies your ad.

Position requests Placement and page position of ads will not be guaranteed. Requests will be honored when possible.

Errors in ads The Daily Cougar shall not be responsible for typographical errors which do not lessen the value of an advertisement. Liability for an omitted ad shall be limited to rescheduling at the advertiser’s request. The Daily Cougar is not responsible for errors in advertising copy accepted after deadline or when advertisers or their representatives have approved an ad containing those errors. The Daily Cougar will be responsible for only the first insertion of incorrect copy or scheduling. Compensation for errors made by The Daily Cougar is limited to the cost of the first insertion of the ad.

Cancellation of ads Advertisers may cancel ad space up to the advertising deadline. Failure on the advertiser’s part to give notice of cancellation by the deadline does not release the advertiser from responsibility for payment of charges for reserved ad space.

The Daily Cougar advertising rates include ad design and layout services. Additional charges may be assessed for extensive design, photography, graphics or typesetting services. For those advertisers with approved credit, payment is due by the end of the month. All terms and conditions on the credit application apply.

2 Send a press release, photo or guest column. If you have an upcoming event or a recent accomplishment, notify us as soon as possible. Use the “Send your news” link on thedailycougar.com. You can also send us photos — just be sure to identify everyone in each photo. If your group represents a cause or has a position on an issue, a group member can also submit a guest column for the Opinion section. For questions, e-mail editor@thedailycougar.com.

3 Get listed in the Calendar. Think of it as free advertising. Send us the information about an event or your meeting schedule and we’ll publish it in the Campus Calendar, which displays upcoming events on our Web site 24/7 and runs on Page 2 every day. 4 Apply for a blog. Blogs on thedailycougar.com are free to student organizations, but there is a short application process. You can use the blog to promote your organization, its events, meetings and accomplishments, and publish opinions as your group sees fit.
