The theme of their craft was called “Unexpected Delivery,� and showcased a 22-foot by 15-foot giant stork, complete with pool noodles for legs and a bowtie. Team members wore diapers as costumes to represent a stork
A basic class assignment turned into a successful mobile invention for a group of Herberger Institute graduate students. Two ASU graduates from the design and arts school created a mobile application that offers dance artists the opportunity to manage and monitor their own rehearsal videos. Stjepan Rajko and Jessica Mumford, who graduated with master’s degrees in 2009, developed the mobile app. In 2005, Rajko was assigned a simple class assignment for his “Performance and Technology� class: come up with a basic method to make dance rehearsals more efficient. Rajko developed the idea of the application for the assignment. He envisioned a device that allowed a solo choreographer to play music and record rehearsal video by using voice commands. In spring 2008, Rajko paired up with fellow graduate and dance student Jessica Mumford. Together, the two constructed a model of the mobile app at ASU, creating a way for artists to not only perform, but also produce and direct their rehearsal videos. They called their creation the Rehearsal Assistant. The Rehearsal Assistant is an audio-video recording app for Android phones, and it’s also designed to work with a computer. Flying a giant stork off of a 30foot pier might seem like a scene from a slapstick comedy, but for a team of ASU students, it’s a two-month coordinated project that can only be described as a leap of faith. Three ASU students and two friends flew their homemade stork about 40 feet in Saturday’s Red Bull Flugtag event in Long
Beach, Calif., before it fell into the ocean. Communications junior Cameron Adler, marketing senior Blaine Coury, mechanical engineering junior Ethan Province an ASU alumnus Brett Hileman, along with 27-year-old Andrews Jeffers, made up team Unexpected Delivery. Flugtag, which means “flying day� in German, began in 1991 in Austria. Since then, there have been more than 50 contests

The owner of an upcoming addition to the local bar scene wants his bar to add class to Mill Avenue. Former ASU student Julian Wright, the owner of another Mill eatery — La Bocca Urban Pizzeria and Wine Bar — said his new tequila bar is designed to be hip and modern with rustic Mexican elements. Like his other establishments, Wright wants Canteen Modern Tequila Bar,
expected to open Oct. 7, to be “upscale casual.� “The canteen will be more sophisticated than some of the other bars on Mill, but not pretentious,� Wright said. Customers can expect to find a selection of 120 to 150 varieties of 100-percent agave tequila and full lunch and dinner menus featuring gourmet tacos. He hopes this kind of atmosphere will appeal not only to college students, but even to people over 50.

He points out that the recent openings of pricier places, like La Bocca Pizzeria and the Irish bar Robbie Fox’s, are the beginning of a trend toward making Mill Avenue a place that is not exclusive to college students. “With places like La Bocca, Canteen and [Robbie Fox’s] opening up on Mill, there is no more polarization,� Wright said.
