Register for classes? Check. Visa? Check. Passport? Check. Prepare to travel halfway across the world? Check. These are only some of the things on an international student’s checklist. They come from different countries, including China, France, South Africa and Iceland, and traveling from their home isn’t always the easiest thing to experience. Walking down McKinley Avenue or studying in Bracken Library, we see international students, but do we ever take the time to get to know them? Everyone has heard the expression, “Birds of a feather lock together.” Maybe it’s time to group ourselves with birds of a different feather. I have a roommate from China who doesn’t speak English well and isn’t quick to understand many American traditions. Living with her gives me a small peek into her world and helps me to understand her culture better.

I came to ind out that the only difference between international students and American students is the language barrier. Although they come from a different country, international students aren’t that different than Americans. They are still young adults, they still like going to the movies, and they still like hearing
the latest gossip, even if it is in another language. In a generation where global communication is key, making connections and getting to know students of various backgrounds is important and can beneit you in the future. tional undergraduate and graduate and professional students • Applications to obtain, amend and/or extend H-1B, faculty/ staff status Culture Exchange, a program that allows a student or group of students to present information on another country, is presented by the Rinker Center every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 102. The program gives students a chance to learn about the culture of a different country by having a student native to that country speak. Countries featured in the series have included France, Ghana, China, Sweden, Nigeria and India. I ind learning about different countries and cultures an interesting and unique way to see how people from other places live. Take some time and get to know someone with a different background than you. It will be a rewarding experience.
